ALPHA COURSE Beginning in the autumn – an opportunity to explore the Christian faith, listen, discuss and ask questions in an informal setting. Ideal for anyone wishing to investigate the Christian faith. Would you like to do the course? Or do you know someone who is interested? Further details later. THE FAMILY TREE Tracing family history is a modern preoccupation, discovering long forgotten skeletons, or finding evidence of wealth or prestige beyond our imagination. For some of us we discover a Christian heritage, generations who have been active Christians whose motive for living has been their devotion to God. Brilliant examples, but is it of real benefit to us today? For to follow their good example I must make a personal choice to become a Christian. It is an individual decision to be part of the Christian community. We are invited to become God’s children, for God has no grandchildren. Details contact John 388751 Jackie 384112
Suffolk Family Carers We are an independent charity, our services are free! A Family Carer is defined as any age; ‘looking after’ a relative, friend, partner, parent/s or child/siblings who cannot manage without them because of illness, age or physical, learning or mental health difficulties. Many Family Carers, care for more than one person. The main concerns are when caring impacts on very part of the Family Carers’ life. It is then, especially, that support is needed which is more focused, planned, and often outside the home, with a complete break from the caring role. This we know sustains situations, otherwise there would be many more people cared for in residential homes, hospitals and other establishments. Please call our Helpline for more information; 01473 232679 or visit our website; www.suffolk-carers.co.uk

Dear Friends, Five weeks after our gardens were open on Sunday. 26th June, for visitors to admire and appreciate, the Village Show, in the Community Centre, on Saturday, 30th July, will display the produce of some of them. Have you taken your schedule from the Post Office? Can you enter one or more of the 73 classes? I am entering the Flower Show at Heveningham Hall on Sunday the 9th and at Sandringham on Wednesday the 27th, and Bedingfield Church has a Flower Festival on Saturday & Sunday the 23rd and 24th. Then there is our own Show, and in September, a week-long Festival and Exhibition will fill All Saints Church with flowers and much more, from Wednesday evening, 21st September to Tuesday the 27th at 6.00 pm for a Celebration of two anniversaries, the 400th of the King James Bible (the Authorised version), and the 90th of the Royal British Legion with events in the evenings also. I shall be asking many of you to help in different ways – do please volunteer also! – and note the dates and get further information from me. Saturday 23rd July is another very active day in Stradbroke, and we will be having a Cake and Produce Stall at the Village Festifull, with sporting activity all week as we host the Inter Village Games till the 24th. The Church Tower will be open to visitors to enjoy the view after climbing 100 steps to the top, on the morning of Sat. 30th, 10am – 1.00pm, while the judges are looking at the entries for the Show, and placing them in order of merit. From the highest point in the village, you can see how our village fits together, developed by builders and planners over the centuries, and other neighbouring places from which many come to Stradbroke to use our excellent facilities for all ages, needs and interests. How fortunate we are here! I am one of those able, willing and ready to provide a service, not only at the times listed above, but whenever I can, as a minister of the church and the custodian of our magnificent building. Do please ask me about the baptism of your child, thanksgiving for a birth, the blessing of a relationship or anniversary, or whatever else you think the Rector of the Parish Church can provide for you and your family. With all good wishes, David Streeter.
All Saints Church Cleaning is on Thursday, 7th July, 10 am onwards Margaret Streeter

NEWS ITEMS COMMUNITY ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS: These awards are made annually by Mid Suffolk District Council as a thank you to someone in the local community who, it is felt, deserves recognition. The closing date for nominations is 22 July 2011. If you wish to make a nomination you can do so directly or via the Clerk. CATALYTIC CONVERTER MARKING: Mid Suffolk North Safer Neighbourhood team has arranged for this to take place at Barley Green Garage on 6 August 2011. CONSERVATION AREA OF THE VILLAGE: The Conservation Architect for Mid Suffolk and Babergh District Councils would be attending the 10th October meeting of the Parish Council to present the updated plan. MID SUFFOLK /BABERGH DISTRICT COUNCILS PROPOSED MERGER: This did not proceed as an insufficient percentage of voters over both districts were not in favour. Cllr Gemmill reported that Laxfield, Stradbroke and Wilby all voted in favour of the merger which, he felt, showed a satisfaction with the representation electors received. Joint working would continue and extend to more areas and a joint management team should be in place by the autumn. Life in the Legion Retired Naval Captain David Goldson was the guest speaker at The June Meeting. He gave a most interesting talk about his service in submarines on The Far East Station, and afterwards Jeremy Higgins gave the usual Vote of Thanks on behalf of all the members present. Following the RBL Tribute Evelyn Neale, the widow of former Branch Officer Graham Neale, thanked the Branch for their help and support following his recent death. Branch Treasurer Roy Neil gave his monthly report, and Jeremy Higgins reported on The Poppy Appeal Seminar held recently at Kesgrave Community Centre. The Branch had a stand at The Horham Bygones Country Fair with member Simon Harrison being present with his cycle as he is to take part in this year’s sponsored ‘Pedal to Paris’ which takes place in early September. A Sponsorship Form for donations will be available in The Post Office from the 1st July and please support this worthy cause. Collections for The Poppy Appeal at The Horham Bygones amounted to £240, and Branch Members Ted Bootle, Jeremy Higgins, Joyce Cooper, Albert Siggers, and myself were there to make it all happen. The H Group Meeting was held on the 16th June at Fressingfield with myself in the chair, and was well attended by over 20 members from Fressingfield, Stradbroke, and Hoxne Branches. Our future was discussed and in particular the need to recruit younger members. It was decided that in future H Group Meetings will be held twice per year together with newsletters. Stradbroke will host the next meeting in September. The branch Members in attendance were Jeremy Higgins, John Graham, Joyce Cooper, Peter Jacques, and myself. Our new Branch Standard Bearer Joyce Cooper has started her duties by parading our Standard at 2 recent events at Wickham Market and Ipswich. The Branch will be represented at a Farm Sale at Lodge Farm Horham on the 2nd July, where there will be a collection made for The County Welfare Fund during the sale of Farm equipment and Machinery. Our next meeting is on Thursday July 7th at 11.30am at our usual venue and the guest speaker will be the new County Welfare Officer Tony Maidment. Members please attend if you can. Michael Burton – Branch Chairman
Womens Institute June was a month of celebrations for us. Dorothy Readman did very well at The Suffolk Show with her lovely Teddy – he was gorgeous ! Gill Bird and Iris Knowles both had a Golden Wedding Anniversary on June 10th, along with their respective husbands of course, a big coincidence and quite an occasion, on the very same day ! It was great to see Eileen Leftley with us again, as a visitor, and also Vicki Batley, nice to see you both. Sheila Harrison was our speaker, who told us about the Diaries of Parson James Woodford, Rector of the Parish of Weston Longville. It was a humorous and charming tale of his life and enjoyed by us all. The Vote of Thanks was given by our President Jennifer Chetwynd and Stella Bryant won the competition with her limerick on ‘A Vicar’. Well done Stella ! Our next meeting will be on 14th July in the garden of Carol Darling. Don’t’ forget ladies – this is at 6pm! See you then. Iris Badcock

SBEC Proper school, proper village – and some cricket Once upon a time, village schools played their local cricket clubs quite regularly, matches which were occasions, looked forward to and treasured. Those days appear to have gone, our lives have become so busy. However, having a cricketer at the helm of Stradbroke High School has rolled back the years as far as cricket is concerned, and, on 16th June, a Headmaster’s XI took the field against a Stradbroke Cricket Club XI. This was an occasion, for, after the game, a courtyard garden in the school, recently refurbished and turned into an area for pupil (and teacher) recreation, was dedicated to the memory of James Grigg, an ex -pupil at the school, who was killed in action in Afghanistan in March 2010. After a few words from Mr Bloom, Mrs Phillips, who had taught James (and his sister Victoria), regaled the assembled teams (and parents and staff) with anecdotes from James’ time at the school. She also revealed that Pat and Mike Grigg, James’ parents, had provided the school with a bat from James’ cricket bag for a very special reason – Brian Alabaster, a local artist from Linstead, will cast a life-size copy of the bat in bronze for display in the James Grigg Garden. Mrs Phillips also presented Pat and Mike with James’ class photograph. Mike took the floor to let everyone know how pleased Pat and he were that the school had chosen to remember James in this way. He also made the point that it was wonderful to see the school playing such an active role in village life, and expressed the hope that the cricket match would be an annual event. Much pleasant banter ensued between all present, with new acquaintances made, and new links forged. It was a fine occasion. Oh, the cricket. Mr Bloom won the toss and invited the Club to bat against the might of his assembled ex-First Class and Minor County bowlers, hoping no doubt that the strength in batting of his selected pupils and staff would then finish off the game with a victory for the School. Alas, the best-laid plans of mice and men do go awry, and Richard Pierce-Saunderson (who had a foot in both camps as Secretary of the Club and Governor of the School) led the Club off at an unusually merry pace, retiring in the 12th over for 31, capably assisted by Future England Captain Ollie Bickley (25), and giving Josh Franklin-Mann (27 not out) the chance to shine. Michael Hugman got a beauty from Andy Mack (ex-Surrey and Glamorgan, and the pick of the School’s bowlers), whilst Dan Tompkins had the misfortune of seeing a diving Mr Bloom hold a magnificent caught and bowled. The Club finished on 137-4 after their 20 overs. The School’s response had an inauspicious start, with J Lund bowled in the first over by Chris Bacon, an ex-pupil of the school. Mr Adams couldn’t capitalise on his stylish batting, and soon departed. Liam Smith was removed, as was Kieran Allum, by a fiendishly quick delivery from Sam Johnson (2/16), while N Mitchell batted almost the entire innings for his 31, only to be stumped by Robert Smith (a parent) off the final ball of the game, the second of two stumpings for Smith, the other victim being J Lincoln (21). Steve Bacon claimed two quick wickets thanks to tumbling catches in the outfield, and then Mr Bloom hit a rather splendid 4 with his fine old bat, before succumbing to the cunning bowling of Macauley Partridge, a rather last-minute replacement for the Club. The Headmaster’s XI finished on 135-8, losing by two runs. The match was watched by a rather boisterous crowd of staff, parents and club fanatics, who confessed that they’d not had this much fun in years. Let’s do it again next year! The final Summer Term is upon us and it is a busy one as usual. I would like readers to join me in hoping for some decent weather for our forthcoming events including the Great School run and Sports Day! We were delighted to receive official congratulations this week on our two recent Outstanding inspections from the Diocese and the Head of OFSTED. Word certainly seems to be getting round about the schools recent success. We have had twelve new pupils join us and we are responding to many enquiries about places for children. If you are considering new schools for your child (or a nursery) we are always happy to arrange for parents to visit us and discover what makes our school so successful and special. You might have noticed that the front of the school playground is currently being renovated at present. We are having the entrance to the school playground redesigned to make this a more welcoming and useable space for parents and pupils. The area which served as a garden will imminently be paved to create a walking/ waiting area further away from the road. We are having a sheltered pagoda installed which will provide a place for waiting parents to sit, a band stand for our brass players and an outdoor classroom. This work will create a much safer, nicer area in which to enter the school and Tiddlywinks will have their own separate entrance. It will also look much more attractive and tidier too. The school is one of the first landmarks as you enter the village, so it is right that it should create a good first impression! From September we will have a new school uniform with our new school logo. To launch this we have bought every child in the school a new sweatshirt or cardigan. We would like to thank the Stradbroke Exhibition fund for helping to provide this for our children. The new uniform looks terrific, the children look so smart and I believe this encourages pupils to feel proud to belong to our school. We are looking forward to many exciting events this term including Educational visits to the Fire station, Stradbroke Bakery, the Dinosaur Adventure Park, a Multi-cultural Festival, Crucial Crew, the Infant Activity day and we have had recent visits to Minsmere Nature Reserve and the Sainsbury Visual Arts Centre! We are also looking forward to joining Stradbroke Business and Enterprise College for a celebratory week of events. It promises to be another exciting term and the end of a highly successful year for the school. Melanie Barrow, Headteacher, Stradbroke Primary School

Stradbroke Youth FC Stowupland Five a side Tournament SYFC entered an U9 team for their first ever competitive outing, as well as a strong U13 side, in this well supported tournament. Under 13 Despite losing their first match to Walsham A, the U13s put up a sterling performance in their age group to finish 2nd in their league. This put them through to the play-offs. In the semi-final they then thrashed the same team they lost to in the first game and made it to the final. Up against a very strong Honnington side who hadn't lost a game it was end to end stuff and it was clear one goal would decide it. Just into the second half James Redwood, much to his surprise, found himself in front of goal with the ball at his feet and he sneaked it into the corner of the net. With great defending and much nail biting from the parents, the boys fought valiantly and hung on to become U13 champions. The team was: Ronnie (no-one get's past me) as captain, Ritchie (twinkle toes) top goal scorer player of the tournament, Callum (penalties are my thing), James (I always new I had it in me); Ant (every which way & loose); Mat (the cannon) and new boy Chris (I can turn on a sixpence). A great team performance. Under 9 In their first competitive outing the U9s at Stowupland, the U9s found the opposition a little too strong but weren’t overawed by the experience. In their next tournament at Needham Market they really stepped up a gear and put on a great display of teamwork and were unbeaten in their league games to top their group and go through to the finals. Their semi final was a very tight affair and although Stradbroke had chances to win, they eventually ran out of steam against very strong opposition. All in all an outstanding team effort in all their games and some great individual performances. Tom Earl had a fine tournament including scoring a hat trick and held everything together, ably assisted in defence by Brandon Edwards. Up front, William Hunter-Ramsey was a constant threat as was Luke Forster who linked the midfield and attack. With Eddie Shearman and Liam Irvine sharing goal keeping and midfield duties the whole team worked incredibly hard for each other and thoroughly served their success.
AGM The AGM was held on June 15th and reviewed the first seasons activity and plans for the next. The Officers elected were Chairman, Mike Readman; Club Secretary , Darren Heath; Treasurer, Colin Redwood; Admin Secretary, Wendy Cook; Social Secretary, Anita Redwood. It was agreed that SYFC would enter 4 teams in the league next season, at U10, U12, U14 and U18.This is a big step forward and will need a lot of support. Kate Holland will be the U10 manager with Steve Sach taking the U18s. Don Darling will continue with the U14s and Mike Readman the U12s. We are very grateful to Kate and Steve for stepping in but WE NEED MORE COACHES / HELPERS FOR ALL 4 TEAMS so please let us know if you can help in anyway, or if you know someone who might.

Stradbroke Cricket Club Having just returned from the funeral of former Cricket Club stalwart, player, secretary, friend, & social conscience, Dick Steward, it is a salutary reminder to us all that it is not whether you win or lose, but the important thing is the playing of the game of cricket. Long after the result is forgotten, we will remember the fun Dick had playing cricket, that it is not about individual achievement, but the team spirit, & the lifelong friendships that are forged. Stradbroke Cricket Club cannot afford to continue to lose people of the calibre of Dick Steward, and James Grigg before him. Thankfully, for every ending there is a beginning, and watching 50 of the club juniors taking their first steps in a life in cricket, gives cause for optimism. The show must go on. We won’t forget either of them, and a permanent reminder of Griggsy comes in the shape of the ‘James Grigg Twenty/20 Cup’. Stradbroke are hosting finals day on Saturday 9th July at the Playing Field. As well as the semi-finals & final, there will be a hog roast, barbecue, bar, cake stall, & a grand raffle. All proceeds go to the ‘James Grigg Youth Cricket Trust’. You are all welcome. Before that, on Friday 1st July is the Village Treasure Hunt. It is £2 per person to enter (£5 for a family), leaving the Sports Pavilion from 6pm. First prize is £20. Just walk round the village, answering the clues, & the prize could be yours. The bar will be open. All proceeds to the Cricket Club. On the field, the Vikings have had a win at last, as have the A Team, while the B Team are top of their league, as are the Under 15s. But, as I said at the beginning, it is all relative. Enjoy your cricket!

Gardeners Notes The rain arrived just in time and everything has started to grow again. I have been a bit spoilt by not having to weed over the last couple of months but with just three showery weeks, the weeds are growing at lightning speed. The grass is full of growth now so it is perfect for re-seeding or repairing damaged areas. At this time of year, if it is showery, grass seed will germinate in 2-3 weeks. There are plenty of open gardens around at the moment and it is particularly useful seeing local gardens to get ideas of what plants do well in our soil and in this location. The same can be said for Nurseries and Garden Centres; plants that have been grown locally seem to grow much better. When you are looking for ideas for your garden - particularly if you want to encourage wildlife - including a pond, or even a small water feature, can make a real difference. Over the last couple of years, I have helped to build some ponds or just revamp old ones and it is surprising how quickly insects, tadpoles, newts and even fish find their way in. Always create a sloping edge or a board so that pond life can come and go easily, it also helps anything that falls in to get out. I had a call last week with similar suggestions with water butts. It came about out of a concern with bees and birds drowning in open water butts. When we have periods of dry weather, it can be difficult for them, so water butts can be very useful. The trouble is, once they are in, they can’t get out. It was suggested to float a block of wood in the butt so that anything that has fallen in the water can climb up onto the block to help it get out. We cover our water butts because I worry about our cats, but we do have a number of bowls and trays around that we fill with water for the birds. When creating a pond, try to locate it in an area with at least half a day’s sun. There are many different types of liner, depending on your budget, size of pond and how natural you want it to look. Normally, a heavy duty, Butal type liner is the best, but make sure you put a soft matting and sand underneath to stop it from puncturing once filled. There are plenty of good books and web sites if you are building the pond yourself. The main bits of advice if choosing a liner is do not cut it until it is full of water and do not let your dogs go into the pond, as they will puncture it with their claws. If you want a natural pond, cover the liner with soil before filling. With any bond, big or small, choosing the right plants is critical. My general rule is that – apart from water lilies any plant in the water should be native to Britain or a very closely related species. This way, things tend to find a natural balance. It is still important to read the labels carefully. When it says ‘invasive’ alarm bells should ring and think very carefully. In a small pond, it is harder to create different situations, but the best way to keep things in check is to have very clearly defined areas under the water. For example, deep water in the middle is not suitable for the majority of pond plants, so these areas remain clear. Planting ledges around the edge of the pond are suitable for marginal plants like marsh marigolds or reeds, but make sure that the bank below the ledge drops away steeply. That way, marginals will only grow around the pond where they are easier to thin, and not across the pond, clogging it up. Finally, it is very tempting to get plants from friends. The trouble is, if someone is offering you pond plants, it is probably because it has taken over their pond. The best way to introduce invasive weeds is from someone else’s pond. If you do receive plants, make sure you wash them off thoroughly to clear any seeds away. Things to be doing. Keep your pots well watered. Just because it has rained, it doesn’t mean that the water has got to the pot. Dead head roses to ensure good long flowering. Tie up and stake any plants bashed around by the wind and rain, try to remember for next year and support earlier in the season. Thin overcrowded fruit on fruit trees to ensure good sized, healthy fruit for later on in the season. Feed tomatoes and cucumbers regularly. Lastly, make sure you take time to enjoy your garden, because chances are that it is probably looking at Happy gardening, Luke or near its best at the moment.

STRADBROKE PARISH COUNCIL NEWSLETTER – 20TH JUNE 2011 I was as distressed as everyone to learn of the terrible neglect of elderly patients at Ipswich Hospital. The failure to provide basic dignity in elderly care, helps to highlight the reason why we must reform our NHS, and why healthcare professionals and not bureaucrats should be running our health service. For Suffolk, this is a wake-up call. We must address the issue of caring for our elderly much more carefully. One of the biggest challenges facing the NHS over the next few years is properly looking after our growing older population. This is particularly important in rural Suffolk, where we need to see greater support from the NHS and social services to help older people continue to live at home in their communities. This requires a more integrated approach to health care, and I am sure that by reforming NHS services we can provide the dignity and community-focussed elderly care that older people deserve. Community hospitals like Hartismere play a crucial role in delivering high-quality and integrated patient care at a local level, for people living in rural communities, like Stradbroke. Last year, I helped to secure a commitment from Suffolk PCT to invest £1.5 million in a comprehensive refurbishment of Hartismere Hospital. Too often, we have been let down by Suffolk PCT over Hartismere. There have been too many false dawns. But this time, I am confident that words will translate into actions, and High Suffolk will see the reinvigorated Hartismere Hospital that it deserves. Following the disappointing news earlier this month regarding Suffolk’s failure to win Government funding for high-speed broadband, I was delighted to see that Suffolk County Council has now pledged to make £10 million available over the next four years to bring faster, more reliable broadband to Suffolk. Securing a high-speed, reliable broadband service in Suffolk remains one of my top priorities as your MP, and I shall continue to work to lobby Government ministers on the need to roll out a high-quality 21st century broadband network for Suffolk. For more information please see www.danielpoulter.com
Letters to the Editor June, Allan and James Hampson would like to say a big thank you to Dorothy Readman, Diane Larter, Sue Boon and Lizzie Smith who stoically helped us at our Charity Garden Lunch for Star Throwers on Saturday 11th June. Our special thanks go to Moyra Gibling who provided us with all the delicious puddings and to Ray Dorling who worked so hard helping us put up the tents and collect the tables and chairs. It was a huge success, the sun shone, and we were able to give Henry Mannings, the founder, a cheque for £1,000. Many thanks to all who came and supported us, either by attending, or by giving donations, or raffle prizes, we are so grateful. Star Throwers is a relatively new registered charity which supports people with cancer. J, A & J Hampson
