YOU ARE INVITED TO SUPPORT THE FUTURE OF YOUR VILLAGE MAGAZINE Email for information about specific production roles that need filling parishmagazine@stradbroke.org.uk

The Stradbroke Monthly Magazine needs production volunteers NOW to be able to continue providing a free monthly magazine to Stradbroke residents. If sufficient volunteers come forward, the time commitment is not huge – just a few hours every month. Without new volunteers, the magazine may have to be less frequent. There are so few volunteers at the moment that it is a possibility the magazine may not be able to continue. If you enjoy the magazine landing on the mat every month and would be sad to see it go please email for more information about the roles that need filling. Don’t assume someone else will step forward. Please get in touch now!

Call it a trunk or boot? We welcomed Canadian guests to last month’s Cameo lunch. After a delicious lunch the 30+ guests attempted to determine the English equivalents to a number of Canadian words - this caused amusement and some confusion. We really were divided by a common language. One of our Canadian visitors, a police forensic investigator, gave us an interesting insight into his work and the importance of finger-print and DNA evidence. He told us of the limits of police information when compared to the total knowledge that God has of each one of us. Canadians Stan & Becky King are at present leading the team at the Quiet Waters Christian Retreat House in Bungay. We look forward to their return visit in the future. How many? The number of Christians world-wide has nearly quadrupled in the past 100 years, from about 600 million in 1910 to 2.18 billion in 2010. A century ago two-thirds of the world’s Christians lived in Europe but now Christians are so geographically scattered that no single continent or region can claim to be the centre of global Christianity. More than a third of all Christians are in the Americas; about a quarter live in Europe; nearly a quarter live in sub-Saharan Africa and one in eight live in Asia and the Pacific. How many? The number of Christians has grown - just like Jesus said it would. Details contact: John 388751 Jackie 384112 Malcolm 384797 Bev 586731

Stradbroke & Fressingfield Medical Centre Announcement IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR PATIENTS OF FRESSINGFIELD & STRADBROKE MEDICAL CENTRE UPGRADE OF CLINICAL COMPUTER SYSTEM ON 28th JUNE On Thursday 28th June 2012 we are upgrading to a new computer system called EMIS Web. This is an essential upgrade to ensure that we remain as efficient as possible. We will try really hard to minimise any inconvenience to patients, but unfortunately disruptions may be inevitable while we get to grips with the new computer system. If you are due to order your repeat medication at the end of June or the beginning of July, it would really help the practice if you could allow three working days notice rather than the usual two working days, this will allow our dispensers time to process your request and minimise any disruption to you during this period. You may also find that during this time there could be disruptions to our online appointment booking system, text appointment reminder system, self-check in systems and patient calling in boards. But we do not envisage any disruption to the online medication ordering system which is available on our website. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our patients for their understanding and apologise in advance for any disruptions that may occur. The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Celebrations at All Saints saw the flags in bright and lofty colour, with music inside provided by Stradbroke Brass and Dougie Chittock, who went on to play eighty sponsored tunes in the afternoon, and the flowers all round the church arranged in many colours to rejoice at the splendid royal achievement of sixty glorious years. I am delighted and most grateful that George Cooper brought his collection of regal memorabilia to go in the centre between mine, filling the north wall with tokens of thanks and appreciation for the Queen’s reign and our admiration for her leadership of her own family and our country There is more for you to see on those three boards about what happens in Stradbroke, in this Diocese of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich, and throughout the Church of England. This year, 2012, is also the three-hundred and fiftieth birthday of the Book of Common Prayer, which has enabled many Christians throughout the world to pray in a form that is dignified and positive, providing strength and comfort to us in our worship and our prayers, and that admirable book is also featured in a display of its history and long-serving qualities. At the Jubilee Service, I made the light-hearted comment that heavy rain in royal years, 2012, 1977 and 1953 is God’s little joke, and for most joy-makers, it did not deter their happiness early in June, but there were some cancellations of popular events. We cannot cancel Harvest Festival later in the year because, although “Man does not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God”, “the good seed that is scattered on the land is fed and watered by God’s almighty hand, and he sends warmth to swell the grain……and soft, refreshing rain. (more rhymes!) “All good gifts around us are sent from heaven above, then thank the Lord….for all his love”. Rhymes hold together the lines that we sing, and bring the hymn to a conclusion. We cannot serve God unless we are fed with bread and much more, from his loving hand. The conclusion of my time as the Rector of Stradbroke will be in October when, we pray, sun and rain will have given us much for which to be grateful at the Harvest Thanksgiving Services, and we will exchange our thanks for what I have endeavoured to do for you, and for the wonderful opportunities you’ve given to us both. With all good wishes, David and Margaret Streeter. All Saints Church Cleaning Thursday 5th July, 10.00 am onwards.

New contracts would be signed in the very near future. Likewise, plans for the development of the Court House into a more useable space for the village are moving forward. SpeedWatch: The Council was keen to implement SpeedWatch in the village and as Laxfield was also considering a scheme it might be possible to join together and spread the task. Already there were two people interested in participating so do contact the Clerk if you would like to join in. The more volunteers the lighter the load for all. Village Design Statement: A supplement had been written to add to the existing Village Design Statement which was adopted by the Council. This will be sent to MSDC Planning Department to be noted by them in dealing with planning applications for the village. The Council is keen that Stradbroke develops and grows within reason and does not become a sterile place with fewer and fewer residents and facilities. NEWS ITEMS Anti social behaviour: This has broken out again in the vicinity of the Community Centre and Pool. This time it involves young people and motorbikes and very loud exhausts, no number plates, no crash helmets when on roads and performing dangerous stunts. If you witness such behaviour please contact either Neighbourhood Watch or the Police. And, if your children have such bikes‌do you know where they are and what they are up to? And finally‌the WI Litter Pick was very successful. Thanks to all who took part for helping to keep Stradbroke tidy. Life in the Legion There was no branch meeting in June, and with ‘The Horham Bygones Country Rally’ cancelled we missed the opportunity to raise money for The Poppy Appeal at this major event. Readers might be interested in an update of our Branch Officers these being Ted Bootle our President, myself as Chairman, John Graham our Vice Chairman, Jeremy Higgins our Secretary, Bernard Mills our Treasurer, Joyce Cooper our Welfare Officer and Standard Bearer, Rev’d David Streeter our Branch Chaplain and Hugh Aldous our photographer. At present the membership is 86. The next Branch Meeting is on Thursday July 5th at 11.30am at The King’s Head Laxfield (The Low House), and the guest speaker will be Peter Downs. He is The Chairman of The RBL Needham Market Branch, and his subject will be ‘Eventful Voyage’. This is an account by Leading Signalman Jerry Driscoll who served in HMS Arlanza a Merchant Ship requisitioned by The Royal Navy during the First World War, which was mined and then ice bound on a secret diplomatic mission to Russia. The story has been researched by Peter Downs his grandson. Members please attend if you are able. Finally our Branch Coffee Morning is on Saturday 7th July between 10am and 12 noon and is to be held at The Rectory, Doctors Lane by kind invitation of Branch Chaplain Rev’d David Streeter and his wife Margaret. All members have received a letter about this event but everybody is welcome to attend and proceeds will go to Branch Funds. W.I For our June meeting we had a tour of the Van Dal shoe factory in Norwich, which proved to be really interesting. We were conducted by a charming and enthusiastic guide over the entire shop floor, learning whilst watching the construction of shoes. Far more to it than any of us has imagined. Tour over, we headed for the sales outlet. I think you could say Van Dal did very well!! As it was not possible for every member to go on the tour, we had a social get together in the evening. Dorothy welcomed Lorraine to our meeting before thanking and handing posies of flowers out to all those members who had participated in the Suffolk Show. Special praise being given to Carol Darling and Jane Gemmill for winning their class ‘A hat forAscot’ and for Dianne Maynard and Moyra Gibling for their beautiful pedestal of flowers which gained joint second place in its class ‘Let’s celebrate the Chelsea Flower Show’. Dougie Chittock with his electric organ joined us for the evening, and set us a quiz based on songs from the musical etc. and memories were really tested. A free and easy evening and much enjoyed. Thank you Dougie. Our next meeting is our Garden Meeting to be held at Vicki’s in Hoxne at 6pm. on July 12th. Gill Bird

Stradbroke Allotment and Gardeners Association.

The Stradbroke Gardeners' and Allotment Association is now at least 40 strong with about 26 of the 28 future plots reserved, it maybe that we have to extend the site to allow for more plots. The Primary School is going to have a plot and The High School have already started to document the progress of the site in video and photography as part of an art project, this will hopefully be part of their GCSE and culminate in an exhibition. The progress we have made to date is thanks to a lot of different people in the community and we have been able to make good use of their various talents. To help raise some funds for the allotment association we are having a cake, plant and preserve stall on Saturday 14th July between 10.00am-12.30pm, opposite Church House in the lay by on Church Street. Please come along to support us. For all enquires contact Luke Heydon tel:01379 384778

Harleston Flower Club Club members have had a successful competing year so far. It started with Harrogate Flower Show at the end of April when it rained and rained and rained and blew a gale and was only 5 degrees - definitely wellington boots and several sweaters, gloves and hats! Chairman, Jenni Baker, won her individual class entitled "Secrets Lie Within" an arrangement to be created within alighted enclosed niche with an oval cut out front - quite a challenge - completed in her signature colours of green and white with miniature chrysanthemums and calla lillies emerging from enclosed circles covered in black and white lychen. Publicity Officer, June Cooper, received a Highly Commended for her interpretation of Object of Desire with a wrist watch using moss, woven hapene and orange vanda orchids. Their interpretation of Arabian Nights on behalf of the Club received a third place. All but a week later was the first of the big Royal Horticultural Society events the Spring Show at Malvern. Competing as apair Jenni and June received a second for a vibrant interpretation of Carnival using a space 6ft 7inches square. Never having arranged in a space bigger than 4ft square this was a daunting experience that involved arriving at ten in the morning and working through to two the following morning! Needless to say breakfast wasn't taken until half past ten that day. June was at home for two days before setting out for Devon County Show where portrayals of The Olympic Flame and Keep in Shape were awarded a second and third respectively. Jenni had a week's respite before proceeding to Chelsea Flower Show competing with a colleague in a class - I had a dream. They chose to depict Martin Luther King and were thrilled to receive a Gold Medal in the prestigious year of the Queen's Jubilee. Suffolk County Show saw the team of Pauline Atkins, Linda Halifax and Chris McDonald participating in the Club Class entitled The Olympic Games - an exhibit depicting a competing country. Their choice was Japan depicted with peonies, phaelanopsis orchids, acers, wood, pebbles and bun moss which received a third. Competing individually June received a highly commended for a foliage interpretation of Power and Strength. The Club meeting for June welcomed Adele Kent with "Take an Old Bag Shopping". Attendance was slightly down on normal but many members had taken the opportunity of visiting the Suffolk Show - they were the lucky ones as it turned out with the Show being cancelled the next day. We were treated to an array of very different arrangements with lots of different flowers. Several members brought examples of "A Hand made Bag" for the monthly exercise and it was interesting to see an array of styles and materials. The next meeting will be July 5th at 2 pm with Mrs. Alison Cushing showing "Summertime". Many thanks, June Cooper

From Rabbits and Rats to Guinea Pigs and Gerbils; from Snakes and Spiders to Turtles and Tortoises; whatever the animal, there’s a class for you. We even have a very special class for anyone who doesn’t have a live pet – A Soft Toy class! So if you’ve got an animal or a “teddy” who shares your life, bring it along and let it make lots of new friends. The Dog show as always will be the biggest event and includes classes such as “the dog that looks most like its owner” the scruffiest, the best puppy, the golden oldie, the one that hasn’t won anything yet, and so on. Sponsored by Skinners we have rosettes for the winners of every class, and a prize for the Best Dog in the Show, this really will be a fun day to remember. What are the rules? Easy, dogs must be kept on a lead at all times and all other pets must arrive in a cage or other “suitable container” but no horseboxes please – we can’t cope with animals bigger than ourselves! Official launch of Localgiving.com Localgiving.com received a warm welcome from the Suffolk voluntary and community sector this week when The Suffolk Foundation hosted the official launch of the donation website, in the iconic Waterfront building at the University Campus Suffolk. 40 local Suffolk community groups enjoyed an evening of networking and nibbles and welcomed the opportunity to find out how Localgiving.com would benefit their voluntary group by showcasing what they are doing in their local community. The Suffolk Foundation has partnered with Localgiving.com to offer support and guidance to local groups in Suffolk who wish to set up a Localgiving.com donation webpage. Designed specifically for ultra-local charities and community groups, Localgiving.com encourages people to give locally and provides a great opportunity for community groups to raise their profile online and start generating a new online support group. Open to both charities and voluntary groups, Localgiving.com enables groups to receive donations with the added benefit of Gift Aid being automatically processed. Having been introduced into Suffolk only a couple of months ago, there are already 28 groups in Suffolk on Localgiving.com, which have raised nearly £9,000 through the website. Of the 28 groups, Iceni Ipswich is the latest to join Localgiving.com. Offering support to families affected by addiction Iceni have an important role in their local community. To find out more about Localgiving.com, visit www.localgiving.com or contact Emma Rawlingson at The Suffolk Foundation directly on emma.rawlingson@suffolkfoundation.org.uk or 01473 602602.

Community Oil Buying Suffolk ACRE launched its community oil buying scheme in January. We already have over 300 members who have on average made savings of over 5.8p per litre (including VAT) with an average saving per order of more than £50. The scheme is open to everyone in Suffolk and the more people that join the greater the savings, which will benefit all of us in the County and it also helps the environment too by reducing delivery miles. Suffolk ACRE brings together orders from all across the County which are then added to other counties who operate similar buying groups, to get the very best price. Membership of the scheme costs £20 a year but for local co-ordinators membership is free. If you would like to know more or are able to offer some help as a co-ordinator if there isn’t one in your community, please do not hesitate to give us a call on 01473 345300 or email oil@communitybuying.org.uk. Further information about the scheme is also available at www.communitybuying.org.uk

Letters to the Editor As your church organist I would like to thank everyone for the support I had playing 60 hymns for the Queen on Jubilee afternoon. I actually managed to play 80 and raised £120 which will go for church funds. D A Chittock We would like to thank everyone who attended our Tea at Tanglewood event in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support on the 10th June. We collected £125.00 which, along with the £50.00 our son received as direct donations from villagers has, as promised, has been donated to Darren’s Ben Nevis climb, on justgiving, com by the “good folk of Stradbroke”. We would especially like to thank Claudene and David Merritt for all their help on the day and Gwyneth Harris, Phyllis Cooke and Vivienne Goffee who, along with Claudene, contributed some tasty fare. Thank also to Rosemary & Martin Wake for the loan of their garden furniture and other villagers who contributed money to us although they couldn't attend. We are sorry if we have missed anyone out but thank you all! Tony & Heather Ambler.

Sports Roundup

Stradbroke Cricket Club The Cricket Club’s season is like a car going through a flood. When it runs, it purrs along, when water gets in it splutters. As I write this I can see rain out of one eye, next seasons football fixtures out of the other, but the past seven days encapsulate the ‘summer’ so far. The Vikings won their third games of the year, a 1 wicket thriller against St.Margarets II which saw Fergus Morgan morph from caterpillar into butterfly. They now stand 2 in the Two Counties League. The A Team finally won a match, at Rumburgh (Lee Bedwell 5 for 35) beginning to fulfill their potential. The B Team are out of their depth after promotion last year. Struggling to field a side every week, they have never lost sight of the reason we play cricket is for enjoyment. The youth teams vary from the many under 11’s competing in two leagues, growing figuratively with every match, through to the under 15’s, waking like Rip Van Winkle to dismiss Eye U-15 for just 6 (yes, six!). The girls were unlucky to encounter a strong Bury team in The Lady Taverners U-11 tournament, while Friday night training seems to suffer from the weather on a weekly basis. James Grigg is never far from our thoughts, and with some intervention from above the annual memorial match against the Headmasters XI went in favour of the High School. Rain did however, wipe out the scheduled 20/20 cup over the Bank Holiday. We will try again, as money raised goes to the James Grigg Youth Cricket Trust. Keep supporting the cricket club, because I think we are going to need a bigger boat! Michael Hugman nd

Stradbroke FC We are holding our AGM on 20th June. We have not been able to get anyone to run a Reserve side which is very disappointing. Still perhaps next year. The Bingo’s for Cash are still going well. The June one raised £53-10 Our next one is on July 13th a Friday. We are also having a stall at the Festifull so see you there!!! One the playing side, we fielded a side to play in the Shaun Turner Memorial Cup. Shaun a player who played for Stradbroke & Worlingworth and passed away with cancer last year so it was fitting to play Worlingworth. Stradbroke won 4 – 1 in Gale Force conditions and now posess the Cup. Well done. Mary Ellis

Local Gardeners Notes June has been a very busy month in the garden with everything growing rather fast, grass and weeds included. It is also the month I try to cut hedges to keep them neat through the summer. If you are cutting a hedge, particularly box, try not to do it when it is very hot, it is also a good idea to use shears rather than a hedge trimmer as it is less likely to turn the leaf ends yellow. Other hedges like mixed native, yew and privet are much more tolerant and can be cut with a hedge trimmer. Laurel has a large leaf and looks better if it is cut with loppers or secateurs, this is a bit of a tiresome job but it means you are not left with half cut leaves all over the hedge for the next couple of months. If you grow fruit trees like apples, pears or plums now is a good time to give them a tidy. This is mainly on small or young trees, or trees that you are training as espalier or cordons. Now that your fruit has formed you can see where to trim back, the idea is to keep the shape of the tree and trim back the long growth that is not required beyond the newly formed fruitlets, this also helps to get light to the fruit. Stone fruit trees like plums, cherries and, if you are lucky to have them, peaches and apricots, should be pruned now. Never prune these trees in the winter as they are likely to get infected with things like peach leaf curl or fireblight. This year, pears seem to have suffered with a late frost just at the time of the blossom. This has meant that a lot of pear trees have either not set at all or have very poor crops, this is a problem throughout northern Europe so don't be wasting any pears you have in the autumn as they may be at a premium. June and July are certainly high points for roses, I tend to use David Austin new english roses most of the time and I'm never let down by them. They have good disease resistance, good repeat flowering and surprisingly good fragrance for modern roses. They also have some good varieties for growing up things, particularly if you don't have much space as the climbers are not too vigorous and flower top to bottom. Some good varieties are Rosa 'Gertrude Jekyll' (pink), Rosa 'Claire Austin' (white), Rosa 'Darcey Bussell' (red/purple) and Rosa 'Graham Thomas' (yellow), they have many more good ones and are certainly worth trying. Another good climbing rose that you can buy in most places is Rosa 'Penny Lane', it has great fragrance and a lovely champagne coloured flowers. To keep getting the best out of you roses remember to dead head them regularly, by that I mean every 2 - 3 days at the moment, this encourages new buds to form. A summer feed is also a good idea and keep an eye out for aphids and treat accordingly depending if you use chemicals or not(best in the evening to avoid killing beneficial insects). To be honest I haven't noticed so many aphids this year, YET! This spring and early summer I have been helping to grow vegetables at a large victorian kitchen garden. It has been surprising the different problems we have had to ones I have at home. Poor germination of seed, particularly spring onion and spinage has been noticeable but the main problem has been birds; with nearly everything, as soon as it pops it's head up, the birds pull it apart. We have had to net almost everything with exceptions of the onion family, potatoes and courgette. At home if we are growing from seed we use old compost from our heap or mix it with some potting compost, at the vegetable garden they had bought multi purpose compost and in most cases it has proved too strong for seeds and young plants. Since the reduction of peat in compost some of the supplements are probably a bit stronger. If you are looking for good filler plants dahlias are always good particularly the single varieties, penstemons are great value as they flower for ages, nepeta is good and attracts lots of insects and the long flowering Geranium 'Rosanne' is also good even if it is seen everywhere. With any luck we will have some good weather soon, at least for more that one day at a time, until next month, Happy gardening. Luke

From Royal-themed fancy dress parties in our local schools, to the many tea parties held in our towns and villages, Suffolk was a hive of activity as residents paid their tributes to the Queen on the sixtieth year of her reign. While I was invited to join the festivities in London, I chose instead to stay at home in Suffolk, where I joined the celebrations at a number of local events. One of my highlights from the Bank Holiday weekend was presenting special mugs featuring the official Diamond Jubilee crest to pupils at Sir Robert Hitcham Primary School. It was a pleasure to see the youngsters dressed as kings, queens, princes, princesses or in the traditional red, white and blue of the Union flag. Throughout her 60 years on the throne, the Queen has shown herself to be dedicated, selfless and committed in her service to the British people and I was delighted to join the many Suffolk families, friends and people of all ages coming together to mark the enormous contribution she has made to our country during the 60 years of her reign. At this time of year, rural Suffolk comes alive with summer fetes, festivals and events which showcase the very best in our towns and villages. I recently visited the Hoxne Music Festival, which returned for the third time this year. The show played host to a range of top musical acts, including the likes of concert guitarist Richard Durrant, whilst the usual selection of activities and refreshments were on offer. The Village Voices choir and the brass ensemble with children from Hoxne Primary School also performed during the 3 day festival. I was delighted to see so many people of all ages coming together for this popular event. This year’s festival also featured musical workshops for the elderly, young people and those suffering from dementia, which were partly funded by grants donated by the Seckford Foundation and the Adnams charity. Suffolk County Council, Mid Suffolk District Council and the Hoxne Parish Council also kindly contributed grants to keep ticket prices down. I would like to thank Vivienne Bradford for showing me around the festival, along with all the performers and everyone who showed their support by attending. Finally, I hold regular surgeries across Suffolk during the summer, where residents can come and speak to me privately about any concerns or issues. I can’t help with everything, but I shall always do my best for you, and fight for your best interests if you need my help. My surgery in July will be taking place in Fressingfield.
