JULY --- Drop in for Coffee Please note this will be held at the home of Mr & Mrs Pyer at Grays Folly Laxfield Road. Transport will be available from the Baptist Church @ 10am. Please feel free to drop in between 10am and 11:30 am on the 23rd to view the delightful garden and meet a friendly group of people. All coffee morning money is given to charity, at present we are supporting St Elizabeth’s Hospice. Youth Club --- sitting comfortably Our youth club has recently celebrated their first birthday as 30+ young people enjoyed an evening of fun and games. But sadly for the youngsters they only have hard chairs or bean-bags to sit on, and would like a comfortable settee. Does anyone in the village have a spare settee in good condition which you would like to donate. Please call John in the first instance who will pass your message to the Youth Leaders. Slow Down --- Take a Break According to a recent article a study measuring the pace of life in cities discovered that people in the greatest hurry live in Singapore. They walk 60 feet in 10:55 seconds, compared to 12:00 seconds for residents of New York, and 31:60 seconds for those living in the African city of Blantyre But regardless of where you live the study shows that walking speeds have increased by an average of 10 percent in the past 20 years. If walking speed is any indicator for the pace of life, we are certainly much busier than before. It is all too easy to get caught up in the frenzy of a busy life and not take time out to consider other important issues. The poet expressed it rather sweetly when he asks, “What is this world if full of care, we have no time to stand and stare?” Writing about 2600 years ago the Prophet Isaiah wrote, “in quietness and trust is your strength”. Perhaps this holiday period is the time to slow down and in the quietness use your mental capacity rather than your walking boots to consider the needs of others, admire the beautiful world we inhabit and thank God for all the good things that He has provided for us. Slow down – Take a break – Have a Good Holiday For further details please contact: John 388751 Jackie 384112

A Message from Rev Susan Revd Susan has had a more than usual busy month, so I have taken the opportunity to share with you a reflection from Mary Batchelor on the season of summer. She writes: ‘Summer brings abundance, the warmth of plenty and fulfilment at work and home. But it brings pressures too. Even where there are resources and energy to meet the demands, there are also times of staleness and exhaustion. If we are to survive the summer heat we must set aside time for rest and refreshment. Rest does not mean inactivity. Exercise is a great restorer of mind as well as body; a quiet walk, an energetic game of tennis, a work-out in a gym – the choice is ours to meet our own needs. Small oases of quiet and refreshment are necessary – and possible- for almost all of us. We need spiritual refreshment too. When we pause to be still during a busy day we can recognise God’s presence, wherever we may be. It’s through such moments of quiet that we find the strength to endure the pressures around us.’ ‘Be still, and know that I am God’ – Psalm 46 Take care, Jennifer Revd Susan, Robin and Rosie the dog invite you to their Garden Party at The Rectory on Saturday 5 July, 2 pm to 6 pm. Stay for a while or all afternoon! th

Stradbroke Parish Council

The Parish Pump!

MEETING OF THE PARISH COUNCIL 09 June 2014 11 members of the public attended a fairly lively meeting.

Next meeting of the Parish Council

14 July 2014 at 7.30pm in the Public Forum: Damian Royal brought the meeting up to date on the situation at the Spar shop. He and his partner, Rachael Lambley, Community Centre have taken over the store and hope to have it open in the very near future. On behalf of the Council the Chairman wished them well for the future and reiterated everyone’s desire for the shop to be a great success. No other items were brought to the Council’s attention. Planning: The following application was considered and approval recommended by all members eligible to vote: 1355/14 Internal alterations to form recording studio, new oak floor to hall area, alterations to ground floor toilets. The Courthouse, Queens Street Notification had been received of Mr & Mrs Johnson’s appeal against the decision refusing planning permission for the erection of a bungalow and construction of vehicular access and passing place at Neaves Lane. Prior notification for the erection of an agricultural building at Holly Tree Farm, Barley Green had been received but was not required. OTHER BUSINESS: Vacancy: two new members were co-opted onto the Council to fill the recent vacancies. Four residents put their names forward and following a ballot George Chaplin and Ollie Coles were duly elected by the Members and welcomed to the Council. However, following the meeting Cllr Michael Smith resigned so another vacancy has occurred and a volunteer would be very welcome. Library & Courthouse: work towards the finalisation of the lease continued. It was hoped the Post Office would be opening in the autumn. Speedwatch: the volunteers’ training would be undertaken shortly, as soon as all paperwork was completed satisfactorily. Further volunteers to join the group would be made very welcome; meanwhile keep those speeds low! Contact Numbers: If there is an emergency continue to dial 999 but if you just wish to report an incident or seek advice please use 101. The Police remind everyone to be aware of vehicle security – just as necessary at home as when away. Ensure that you keep your car well-maintained and in good running order to minimise the risk of a breakdown and perhaps consider joining one of the breakdown services. Always plan your route and let someone know where you are going and don’t forget to take your phone (charged and with credit)! Keep the car doors locked and handbags and valuables out of view. If forced to stop keep the engine running and be aware of how you will manoeuvre your way out of a difficult situation. Avoid eye contact with aggressive or suspicious drivers and if someone gets out of a car and approaches you flash your lights and sound the horn and set off the alarm, if you have one. If you have a breakdown on the motorway call for assistance and, if you are a woman alone, inform the service of this fact. Wait on the verge and lock all doors except the passenger door nearest to you. Garden Bonfires: it is that time of year again when garden rubbish mounts up. If you plan to have a bonfire please consider your neighbours...some may have health problems irritated by smoke; please check wind direction. Perhaps it would be a good plan to mention the intention to burn garden waste to them. Members of the public and press are very welcome to attend meetings of the Parish Council and to bring matters of concern or information to the attention to Members in the time allocated to the Public Forum, which takes place prior to the start of every meeting. Minutes of the meetings are held in the Library and are now posted on the Notice Board The July Meeting of the Parish Council will be held in the Community Centre at 7.30pm on Monday, 14 July 2014 Clerk to the Parish Council: Carol A Smy tel: 01379 384679 email: clerkspc@thesmys.com **Please make non-emergency calls to the Clerk between 0830 and 1800hrs Monday to Friday only**

Life in the Legion The June monthly meeting of the branch was very special; instead of a guest speaker, President Ted Bootle and members Alan King and his daughter Joyce Cooper, spoke of their recent trip to take part in the 70th Anniversary of the D-Day landings. Both Ted and Alan are members of the Norwich Branch of the Normandy Veterans Association. On ten occasions throughout the tour Joyce carried our Branch Standard. The Chairman, Michael Burton, presided with the usual tribute at the start of the meeting. Mention was made of the recent death of member Les Cunnell; he was also at D Day, serving in the Royal Navy on landing craft. Michael thanked Joyce and everyone that had helped in the recent concert given by “Sheringham Shantymen”, a great night for our branch. Treasurer Bernard Mills gave his usual report. The local Poppy Appeal totals to date were given out as, Stradbroke and Wilby £3,509.76 and Laxfield £2,339.28. For various reasons the branch will not be holding its Annual Coffee Morning in the village this year. The next meeting is on Thursday, July 10th to be held at our usual venue, Laxfield, King’s Head, starting at 11.30 am, when the guest speaker will be retired Police Inspector, Horace Bunton, from Diss. Michael Burton (Branch Chairman)

W.I. Our evening of Haute Couture can best be summed up in one word. Marvellous. Couturier Brian Piccolo was the epitome of elegance, and had charm, wit and personality in abundance. Accompanied by his close friend Gloria, he delighted us with his talk about his life, and world of fashion. He brought with him many of his creations, and talked in depth about each one as he displayed them on a mannequin. There were oohs and ahhs from the huge audience, as dresses, suits and skirts were revealed. The colours and fabrics Brian had used were truly stunning, and the detail incredible. Each model (he only ever makes one) was then circulated for everyone to see. Many of his creations had metres and metres of fabric in their skirts, some like gossamer weighing next to nothing, others encrusted with beading weighing a considerable amount, but all were quite, quite beautiful. Brian’s easy going manner soon encouraged questions from the floor, and the whole room was buzzing. All good things have to come to an end they say, and Brian’s final revelation was a wedding dress that he had made especially for our occasion. It was simple, ethereal and beautiful. Pat Fill spoke for everyone in her vote of thanks, as she said what a delightful evening we had all had, and how we wish we could be clients of Brian. Flowers were presented to Gloria, that had been arranged by Moyra, and our thanks to her and Dianne for all the flowers for the evening. Evenings like this do not come without a lot of planning, and it’s a great big thank-you to June and Dianne for all their hard work in the organisation of it. Special thanks to our hostesses for the evening Iris and Vivienne, who together with their helpers served the refreshments. Our barmen were Allan, Michael and Stuart all W. I. husbands. What would we do without them? Thank you all so much. An evening we will all remember for a very long time. Gill Bird

Stradbroke High School On Wednesday 4th June, twelve of our Year 8 and Year 9 students visitedUniversity Campus Suffolk in Ipswich to take part in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) challenge event. A number of schools took part and overall there were around twenty teams made up of four students from two different schools. The pupils were all slightly apprehensive about working alongside unfamiliar students, but they ended up really enjoying the day and getting to know some new faces. There were four challenges; building a Lego robot, building a model car, building a bridge and creating an e-fit face. The students all enjoyed the challenges that demanded a considerable amount of thought and skill, but were fun as well. They also had the opportunity of looking around the campus and meeting students studying at the University of Ipswich as well as others from Durham University and Kings College London. This was a great day out and our students did us proud. Out of the four challenges, two of the winning teams contained Stradbroke pupils, Ben Brown, Skye Lintott, Evan Read and Adam Childs. Even better - two of our students, Evan Read and Adam Childs were part of the overall winners. This means that their team goes forward to represent Suffolk at Cambridge University next year. Their prize cups were awarded by the High Sheriff of Suffolk. Ruth Hurren, RE Teacher and G & T Co-ordinator

Stradbroke Guides Diary of a Guide.... On the 13th June Stradbroke Girl Guides went on a two night camping trip. When we arrived we put up all the tents and then we got our food ready (all of our food we cooked was using gas stoves). After tea, it was nearly time for bed and we did NOT get much sleep at all! The next day we had a delicious breakfast including: sausages, bacon, eggs and beans. We had various activities throughout the day, in the morning some people did some craft and others helped with sorting out water and washing up. Later, we all went for a walk which was very nice as the weather was good. During the evening we lit the fire and warmed up a bit. Then we did another activity, which was scooping out the middle of an orange and pouring cake mixture inside, after we had done that we wrapped them up in foil and cooked them on the fire- they tasted so nice. Overall the camp was a really good and I would definitely do it again :-) Candice Dudley

Stradbroke Primary School On Monday 16th of June we had our first joint school event. Pupils in Year R,1,2,3 and 4 at All Saints Primary, Laxfield joined pupils from Stradbroke for a Kidz Fit day. The ultimate goal was to improve Every Child's self- esteem, physical and mental wellbeing and confidence, in a fun way. Kidz Fit instructors presented the sessions. These workshops were both enjoyable and educational, and were accessible to all ages and abilities! Every child was encouraged to have a go, join in and have fun! The children learnt how to maintain a healthy lifestyle, how the human body works, as well as the importance of giving one hundred percent and being the best we can be! We had good weather and managed to avoid the showers when we had our fun whole school picnic. Can we thank all our children– they behaved beautifully! Here is some thoughts from the children:

“I loved making fruit kebabs” Abbie Class 2 “I’m going to do some healthy exercise everyday” Amelie Class 1 “I liked making new friends from another school” William Class 1

1st Fressingfield Scout Group Twenty-one members of the 1st Fressingfield Scout Group recently spent a week in Iceland. The ‘Ice and Fire’ Expedition organised by Group Scout Leader Andrew Aalders-Dunthorne was a huge success. The team that included members of the Explorer Scout Unit (14-18 year olds) took part in a range of exciting and challenging activities that included: hikes in the local mountains and volcanoes; dip in hot volcanic springs, horse riding across lava fields, whale watching, glacier climb, cultural and shopping day in Reykjavík and a water assault course – that ended in some icy tumbles! While out in Iceland, we were also able to sample a lot of the local food – with the Icelandic lamb and fish pie being a hit. While not hiking, climbing or riding – other activities included fishing, go-karts, cross country running and a dry assault course. The expedition is part of the growing international programme that the Fressingfield Explorer Unit provides for its members. The Popular Scout Group has limited spaces for new members starting in September from Beavers aged 6 years to Explorers aged 18 years. The Group will also be looking at extending its provision and training for adult volunteer leaders and especially looking at the 18-25 year age group. Suffolk Energy Action is Coming Your Way Soon! Energy bills have recently reached an all-time high. This impacts on everyone within our county, but particularly affects the elderly, the vulnerable, and those with low incomes. To help address this, the Councils in Suffolk have joined forces to bring local residents Suffolk Energy Action – a new, trusted, energy saving scheme. This follows the successful award of Ł5.6m to Suffolk County Council and the seven District and Borough councils in Suffolk that collectively form part of the ‘Suffolk Climate Change Partnership’. Suffolk Energy Action is a quality scheme, tailored to the needs of residents living in Suffolk. The scheme is designed to help all Suffolk residents save money on their energy bills and encourage the reduction of carbon emissions through energy efficiency improvements like wall insulation and replacement boilers. Suffolk Energy Action will provide free/subsidised assessments on the energy performance of homes, identify potential improvements, and provide options and advice for funding. Over the coming months, Suffolk Energy Action representatives will be raising awareness of the scheme in your local community by leafleting households and knocking on doors. Your local district, borough, town or parish Council are aware of this scheme. All representatives will carry appropriate identification badges, but if the public are in any way uncertain about their authenticity, they should contact the scheme’s free-phone number to verify this on: 0800 840 90 90 or go to www.greensuffolk.org/suffolk-energy-action Emma James, Environment Strategy Officer

Open Day to highlight services for hearing impaired in local area Family run company, The Hearing Care Centre offers a private hearing care service from The Health Centre, in the centre of Eye. On Friday 11th July (9am-5pm) the team will be throwing open the doors of the clinic offering many of their services free of charge, and allowing the public to see what help is available on their doorsteps. Stradisphere Music Festival

Stradisphere 2014 – STRADBROKE'S MUSIC FESTIVAL 5th & 6th SEPTEMBER

Stradbroke will soon host the first music festival of this type, bringing our region’s best Bands and Acts as well as the two of the UKs finest tribute acts Bootleg Boss (Bruce Springsteen) and Kings Ov Leon (Kings Of Leon) to the community centre playing fields. The festival will be ticketed to a limited audience of 499 paying guests. This is a great opportunity for the community to enjoy a family friendly festival. The site will be controlled by a professional security team to ensure smooth running of the event and entrance will by Ticket Only. Food and a licensed bar will be available throughout the weekend. Tickets will be available from £25 per person with under 14s going free as long as they are accompanied by a paying adult. Tickets are available from The Queens Head, Stradbroke Library and The Laxfield Royal Oak. Proceeds from Stradisphere will go back to the community via SAS so a sell out show will enable the community to benefit from a substantial cash injection from the organisers. Alongside the bands playing will be two acts from "Stradbroke Cathedral & Cars” and “Cities of Gold” giving them the chance to play on a professional laid out stage and sound crew something that many acts would relish. We have also thought about the weather, booking a Circus style big top tent for the main stage and other marquees for the bar and second stage so you can forget the umbrella, as well as the weather the marquees will also act to contain the sound. Sounds will be projected away from local residents, all music will be finished by 22:30 again to alleviate any disruption. Again we are hoping this will be a fun packed day for all ages to come and enjoy the food and fingers crossed the sun too. For further information on other musicians you can visit the website www.stradisphere.co.uk and where there is also a link to our facebook page. Letters to the Editor

“Thanks to the so called dog owner who let their dog foul on the pavement outside our house in New Street on the even-

ing of Wednesday 28th May. It's a pity they could not have cleaned it up when their dog fouled on the pavement, it would have spared my wife having to clean it up off our carpet as one of us stepped in it.” Yours, C Howes. Mark Peacock has lived in the village for thirty years, and has served as a Parish Councillor for fifteen years. During this time he has served our community efficiently yet modestly in many different ways. As a local businessman he employs local people and has gained the respect of customers over a wide area. He will be much missed on the Parish Council and this village will be lucky indeed to get as good a replacement. Thank you Mark. Mrs B. M. Moore A letter has been sent to Mrs Avril Mager who ran a Bingo evening for United Kidney Patients Ass. Norwich, to thank her for the donation of £226.50 she raised for the association. Thanks to all who helped. Well Done Avril. Mary Ellis

News & Views A View From The Gallery... . . is fluff. That’s all. However it is my view from my perspective and it’s honest. Now for the serious bit:- The village puts it’s trust in the Council to act on its behalf in a way that requires transparency, responsibility and order. This body has power and some control over the future of the village. That is why councillors are required to fill in a form in which they are asked certain questions. The answers they give are part of the basis on which they serve. Their completed forms are available to be seen on MSDC web site. They are also asked at each PC meeting to declare any interest they have in the agenda items – that means potential bias. Each Council employs a clerk who takes the minutes and oversees the legal and judicial aspect of proceedings and a Chairman who directs the meeting and keeps order. I am talking about all councils generally and for those who are jumping up and down thinking I’m having a pop – read on... Any Council that is proud of itself and the way it conducts its business should welcome scrutiny. The meeting is open for all to attend. I personally take issue with some of our council decisions but this is democracy so I live with and accept the majority view. The hope is that all councillors use their vote responsibly with care and thought and vote impartially on the issue that’s in front of them without any other undeclared agenda. For instance it would be wrong to vote against an issue because you don’t like the person putting it forward or vote for it because you belong to the same club. Just an example – not an accusation. Breathe out . . .

I apologise now if this has become more of an unsolicited personal lecture than a light hearted view but as always I want to end on a high. I did attend the meeting and I challenge anyone present not to accept it was something of a shambles but on one point happiness ruled: The new manager of the Spar introduced himself to the meeting with a view to opening the shop very soon. Applause broke out and just everyone joined together in wishing both him and his partner every success. Ann Readman

Sports Roundup

Stradbroke Cricket Club The cricket season has reached halfway, and still the height of Stradbroke’s ambition is actually fielding 11 players. Playing with one arm tied behind our backs is reflected in results, particularly in the Two Counties League. The Vikings have not won since the first game of the season, but that is due more to those who don’t play, rather than those who do. Totals of 86 at Brockley (Lee Bedwell 27), 96 at Woolpit (Marcus Marvell 56), 121 at Exning (Josh Franklin-Mann 31), & 64 at Stowmarket (Simon Higgins 20) give the bowlers & fielders little hope, although without exception they have worked hard to paper over the cracks. The A Team also struggle for numbers, but seem to have found a winning formula after defeats at Worlingworth (Alan Barker 50) & a cup defeat by Brantham were soon forgotten as Woodbridge & Nacton were easily beaten. Matt Wise’s 67 was backed up by 4 wickets for both Billy Freeman & David Allum, and a similar story followed against Nacton. Olly Bickley (52) set the platform, then Freeman took 4 more wickets. How much longer the club will last is a concern, particularly as over the horizon, the Under 13 & Under 11 teams have won half their matches, but we need to fill the gap for a couple of years until they are ready for senior cricket. Please help! Michael Hugman

Stradbroke FC Club By the time you receive your magazine the club will have had its AGM on 18 June, so more details next month. The June Bingo raised £53.30. Stradbroke and District Bowls Club At our Coffee morning on the 14th June we managed to raise £116.85, with thanks to those who attended, we would have liked to see a few more people, but we do appreciate that there are so many activities in our Village, people have to choose who to support. Getting the right healthcare advice and treatment If you feel unwell, here’s some advice which we hope will help you choose the right route to fast treatment and get well soon! For good self- care, keep your medicine cabinet well-stocked with the items you and your family need. For minor illnesses, advice on medications and colds, coughs, minor burns, strains and sprains - or if you need emergency repeat prescriptions - contact a pharmacist. Your surgery is great for advice on health problems, and examinations and treatments. All main surgeries are open between 8am and 6.30pm Monday to Friday. On the day appointments are available if your need is urgent. If you need help when your surgery is closed call 111. You will be asked for information to direct you to the correct service, or to arrange for an ambulance where appropriate. Ipswich Hospital and West Suffolk Hospital have Emergency Departments for emergencies only. Call 999, only for life-threatening illnesses or injuries. Denise Wrobbel – Suffolk NHS

A colour explosion to hit Suffolk in aid of EACH A colour explosion is coming to Ipswich this summer thanks to the launch of the brand new Treehouse Colour Dash. On Saturday 12th July 2014, runners dressed in white T-shirts will descend on Christchurch Park for the event, which is the first of its kind to be hosted across the whole of Suffolk. At every kilometre along the 5k route, runners and walkers will have a different coloured powdered paint thrown at them by The EACH Colour Pirates. By the end of the run, the white T-shirts will have become crazy artistic masterpieces. These fun and colourful events are taking the UK by storm, and are an innovative way to raise funds and have great fun at the same time. The special colour powder is 100 per cent safe and each colour zone will have a specific colour. The only rule is to wear white at the start. Money raised in sponsorship for the event will go to EACH. This is a family, fun event, and also great for signing up with your work colleagues, gym buddies and those who enjoy fun runs. This event is for everyone of all fitness levels who would like to have fun and support EACH. Nicola Atkinson of Fred Olsen Travel, who has sponsored the event, said: “We’re delighted to sponsor such a fun, colourful local event while supporting our local children’s hospice. The Fred Olsen Travel Team is signing up to run, walk and become colour pirates on the day.” For more information, or to sign up, please visit: www.each.org.uk Be part of the first Colour Dash Suffolk and support your local children’s hospice in a fun way! Wingfield and District Gardening Club A lively presentation by Ben P Otterton on “The Travelling Horticulturalist” was enjoyed by members. Now Europe (as nearer home), next Sri Lanka in the foothills to collect bulbs, lotus seed lower down, but must miss the crocodiles! Also avoid Leopards while collecting seeds and bamboo on the highland plateau. Did one know there are 15 varieties of banana? Orchids are sometimes collected high up in fog. He also visits an elephant orphanage and transit home where he stays at a government lodge, and also finds many different kinds of pitcher plants, better known here as house plants. All products are documented and photographed and he mentioned that Palm Squirrels are greatest agricultural problem. He also travels to Cambodia and closer to home, Denmark and Greece, but he is then off to Quito to go to the Amazon borders to look for the “Zig Zag Heron”. It is not just plants that are his great interest, Turtles, Monkeys and there are worms 6ft long, Giant Spiders but Passion Flowers on the snowline. He also works in Rotterdam Zoo which is used as recreational space while he does survey work as Europe wants a complete plant and grasses profile in a Sekim Meadow! Life is never dull! There is also a very good nursery near Rushall when he gets home. On 5th July we travel to visit Columbine Hall at Stowupland, near Stowmarket, to visit their garden. Stowupland is reached on the A1120. £4.00 to view. For further information contact Caroline on 01379 384674

June is halfway through as I write this and the allotments have burst into life. Like the people who run them they vary so much from plot to plot. Some regimented and weed free, some quirky, others a random mish mash of flowers and veg. There are even a couple free waiting for someone to help them burst into life. Watching people walk down from their plot with baskets groaning with strawberries, artichokes, flowers, eggs and salad crops it's hard to imagine life without my plot and the camaraderie that the allotment project has brought. Please come and join us on Saturday August 3rd, for our annual open day from 11 a.m till 3pm. There will be soup (home made of course) savouries, scones and cakes, home-made lemonade, tea and other refreshments along with crafts, produce and games. You can see the progress we have made, walk in the beautiful wildflower meadow, and meet our feisty chickens and photogenic bantams. If an allotment is not for you, why not pop a couple of grow bags in your back garden, no digging required and they are great for summer vegetables like courgettes or tomatoes. Gill Palmer

Watering Tips for the Summer Months July and August are often months of hot dry weather (or so we hope!) Which although welcome, are not good for the gardener. One good watering once a week is far better for the plants than constant or shallow watering. Shallow watering leads to a shallow root system, so if you can't water for any reason, the plants suffer. Constant watering is just as bad. The plants do not develop the deep roots they will need should you not water for a while, such as when you are away. It is also a waste of water. Watering well once a week will encourage deep roots and sturdy growth. Some plants will need this once a week for example, lettuce, runner beans, all the squash family, tomatoes and stump root crops and others not at all or every other week. Onions are best not watered as they are starting to mature. Watering too much now will encourage the bulb to rot in storage. Unless it is really dry, potatoes under soil will not need a weekly water either. If in doubt use your common sense. Happy gardening. Helen Pleasance

I was absolutely delighted to be able to attend this year’s Suffolk show at Trinity Park. With the recent exceptionally heavy rain in the run up to this year’s show there were doubts whether it would be able to take place echoing the cancellation of a couple of years ago. However, due to the outstanding work of all those involved the eagerly awaited event was able to go ahead. I must thank everyone whose efforts ensured the show would be open for everyone to enjoy. I was particularly pleased to see younger children were able to attend free of charge making for a great day out for all the family. This year’s show was marked by the attendance of Prince Harry and it was a great pleasure to see him there and hear him speak about our great county of Suffolk in such a positive way. Suffolk’s farmers and food producers rightly have a reputation both nationally and internationally for the excellent food and drink they produce. Their presence not only boosts our local economy but provides many valuable jobs and apprenticeships for local people. The show gives me the opportunity to show my continued support and backing to them. Agriculture plays an enormous role in Suffolk life, not just as an economic activity but maintaining and preserving the very environment in which we all live and work. As agriculture has embraced modern technology and farming methods we must ensure that we support them and is one of the many reasons why I campaigned to improve Broadband in Suffolk. In conjunction with my fellow Suffolk MPs and County Councillors I was pleased to play a leading role in securing £12 million of government funding for super-fast broadband. Of course not only is Suffolk known for its high quality food and drink industry but for its beautiful countryside and diverse wildlife. The highly acclaimed BBC series, Spring Watch, has been broadcasting on location from RSPB Minsmere. At the show I was lucky enough to have the time to visit the exceptionally busy Suffolk Wildlife Trust stand. The Trust works hard along with other organisations to help maintain and protect our valuable countryside. It was very gratifying to see so many young people obviously enjoying themselves as they completed the hedgehog trail, pond dipped or helped build the bug hotel. Not only were they enjoying themselves outside but were also learning about and interacting with our countryside, something which is so important in these days of increasing technology and virtual worlds. I must congratulate everybody who played a part in this year’s show; it has been a great success and an outstanding advert for our vibrant county of Suffolk. I, of course, look forward to attending again next year. I hold regular constituency advice surgeries locally to help people who have problems. If you think that I may be able to help you, please contact me on 01728 685 148, or email using daniel.poulter.mp@parliament.uk For more information please visit www.drdanielpoulter.com
