June 28th/29th 10am to 5pm It's that time of year again. A must for any family wanting a fun day of entertainment for everyone. On the Saturday, in the newly designed arena, we have scheduled a variety of live entertainments including Medieval Combat, Dog agility, Horse and Hounds, Morris Dancing, Fire brigade display, Tiddlywinks graduation ceremony and Zumba. There’s also a first for Stradbroke "a sponsored dog walk" (see separate article for details) in aid of the Dogs Trust. Outside the arena there will be an even larger covered market than last year with a wide variety of stalls, exhibits and crafts on display and for sale. On Sunday the arena will be taken up by Stradbroke's own, now famous, version of "Its a Knockout/Wipeout" with more water, more fun and more gunge! Enter your team soon if you want to participate. On both days the Stradbroke Fairground run by the High School will provide challenges and entertainment, side shows and games for young and old. There will also be a bar and a variety of food stalls to cover all tastes. Finally, for the football enthusiast, the annual Stradbroke 5-a-side tournament is also taking place on both days involving over 50 teams (girls and boys). "Truly a Fest - Full of fun and entertainment for all" Contacts: Main Organiser - Roger Turkington (01379 384248) Market Stalls and exhibits - Nigel Brown (07771 838957) Its a knockout/Wipeout - Ellis Holt (07786 991044)

Please feel free to drop in on the 25th between 10am & 11:30am to meet a friendly group of people who enjoy the refreshments and browse through any goods for sale. All donations are given to charity, at present St Elizabeth’s Hospice. Ukraine update ---- Message from Jackie As the broadcasters continually inform us the situation is quite desperate with many Ukranians having to leave areas under pro-soviet control, many are leaving with virtually nothing. Christians are helping by providing food, clothing and accommodation. The Christian organization which we support “Hope Now” has a feeding plan and currently provides for many people. There has also been a block on money sent to aid and charitable organizations - at present cash has to be taken and exchanged for the local currency. Depending on the situation in September I am hoping to re-visit Ukraine and take part in heading up a camp for widows and widowers. This year I am asking people if they would collect wool for me to take so that scarves and blankets can be knitted by the guests. It costs £50 to give each person a holiday where they will have a great deal of fun, enjoy good food, and share the love of God. “Hope Now” continues to provide physical and spiritual care. I will also be taking second hand clothes. If you have clothing in good condition, please contact me, I will gladly collect your donations. l Piece – What’s on the menu? Hope Now helped fund an ex prisoner who became a Christian in prison. With this help he built a large shed to keep and breed rats so that he could eat meat! All Saints Church Fund Raising Committee The Art Exhibition went off really well (no thanks to me). I must thank everyone who helped in any way, screen erecting and pulling down, helping in the church and anyone who stood in for me. The sponsors were a great help towards postage costs. A Message from Rev Susan Dear Friends & Neighbours, I hope this letter finds you well. “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Believe in God, believe also in me.” Jesus is speaking to his disciples. The words are often read at a funeral, I think because Jesus goes on to say that he is going to prepare a place for them, and of course that is a comforting thought. Whether in heaven or here on earth we all want to know that there is a place for us. Loneliness, depression and stress seem to be diseases of the age we live in. Life for many is so busy that we often do not have time for others. Jesus on the other hand always had time for people even the ones others avoided and he has a place for each one of us here on earth. Just visit our church and you will find a warm welcome. Whatever you are anxious about remember what Jesus said, “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Believe in God, believe also in me.” Give it a try; I don’t think you will be disappointed. God bless, Susan Revd Susan, Robin and Rosie the dog invite you to their Garden Party at The Rectory on Saturday 5th July, 2 pm to 6 pm. Stay for a while or all afternoon!

Stradbroke Parish Council

The Parish Pump!

ANNUAL MEETING OF THE PARISH COUNCIL 12 May 2014 12 members of the public attended the meeting and no items were brought to the Council’s attention in the time set aside for the public forum.

Next meeting of the Parish Council 9th June 2014 at 7.30pm in the Community Centre

PLANNING: The following application was considered and approval recommended by the 8 members eligible to vote: 1355/14 Internal alterations to form recording studio, new oak floor to hall area, alterations to ground floor toilets. The Courthouse, Queens Street. There was no update on decisions made by MSDC to date and no other planning matters were on the agenda. OTHER BUSINESS: APPOINTMENTS: Nick Stones and Oliver Last were elected Chairman and Vice Chairman, respectively, for the coming year; if anyone wishes to have information on the various other appointments made at this meeting please contact the Clerk for details. VACANCY: Two vacancies had arisen following the resignations of Mark Peacock and Don Darling. The vacancies had been advertised and members of the public interested in putting their names forward were encouraged to get in touch with the Clerk or any member of the Council for further information. LIBRARY & COURTHOUSE: The Trustees were pleased to announce that the Post Office had made its decision, following the recent consultation, that a facility would be opening in the Library. Planning permission for change of use was required so the Post Office counter would not be open immediately but this was a tremendous boost. The Chairman thanked the Trustees for all their hard work in bringing a Post Office back to the village; although some residents had let it be known they would have preferred to have a service in the top shop but as this was patently impossible at the current time a very welcome alternative had been found. Work towards the finalisation of the lease continued. SPEEDWATCH: The required equipment had arrived and so the commencement date for training was in the hands of the Police. CONTACT NUMBERS: If there is an emergency continue to dial 999 but if you just wish to report an incident or seek advice please use 101. Members of the public and press are very welcome to attend meetings of the Parish Council and to bring matters of concern or information to the attention to Members in the time allocated to the Public Forum, which takes place prior to the start of every meeting. Minutes of the meetings are held in the Library and are now posted on the Notice Board. The June Meeting of the Parish Council will be held in the Community Centre at 7.30pm on Tuesday, 09 June 2014 Clerk to the Parish Council: Carol A Smy tel: 01379 384679 email: clerkspc@thesmys.com **please make non-emergency calls to the Clerk between 0830 and 1800hrs Monday to Friday only**

Life in the Legion The Stradbroke RBL branch has been quite busy in the community recently with the incentive to sow poppy seeds for this commemorative year. Four primary schools have taken part in this initiative, plus St Mary’s Church in Horham. This has been achieved by sowing seeds which are inside blown up balloons! Children (and adults) love the chance to be noisy and destructive by jumping on the balloons in order to burst them, thus scattering the seeds in the process. In the month of April, Worlingworth and Stradbroke Primary Schools were visited by the invitation of School Heads, Rebecca Draper & Linda Walsh respectively. More recently, Laxfield & Wilby Primary Schools have been visited for the same purpose at the invitation of School heads, Lucy Hammond, Roisin Wiseman and Philippa Nunn. At all these visits, Children have had the opportunity to meet with branch members, and Branch D- Day Veterans - Ted Bootle and Alan King. At the latter two schools, Laxfield and Wilby, children also had the opportunity to see the Branch Standard, and try on the strap, beret and gloves. Standard Bearer Joyce Cooper explained to the children the symbolism depicted on an RBL Standard. On the 27th April, the Suffolk County ’s annual Anzac parade took place in the town of Hadleigh . A large number of RBL and Association Standards were carried though the town, including the Branch Standard for a service at St Mary’s Church. On Saturday 3rd May, Laxfield village, and museum organised a day to Commemorate WW1. The two branch Veterans led the Parade to the village memorial, behind the Standards of their own branch, and that of Fressingfield branch carried by Mike Kennard. This event involved the seven villages that border Laxfield village. The May monthly branch meeting was chaired by John Graham, vice chairman in the absence of the chairman who was on holiday. The guest speaker was Nigel Pitstock from Fressingfield, whose subject matter was his career with the BBC as the agricultural editor and correspondent. He spoke of his memorable and adventuress experiences working in a total of 49 countries. This was an extremely fascinating talk, which was thanked by John Graham. A birthday cake was provided for member Alan King, who celebrates his 90th birthday this month. The next event on the agenda is the Concert Overlord, to be held at Stradbroke High School on Saturday 31st May, with special guests, the Sheringham Shantymen. This concert will precede the departure of the two veterans, and the standard bearer, who will travel to Normandy for the D-Day 70th commemorations on Sword Beach 6th June. Brian and Joyce Cooper Our Standard Bearer Joyce Cooper will travel to Normandy for the D Day 70th Anniversary Commemorations on Sword Beach on June 6th. At St Mary’s Church, Horham on Mothering Sunday, Poppy Seeds were also scattered by bursting balloons, organized by Lawrence Weaver, after the reading of this poem written during the First World War. In Flanders Fields the Poppies blow Between the crosses row on row, That mark our places in the sky. The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset flow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders Fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe. To you, from failing hands, we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die, We shall not sleep, though Poppies grow In Flanders Fields Other activities; we were represented at the Annual Suffolk Anzac Day parade, held recently at Hadleigh; Joyce Cooper carried our standard. Laxfield village and museum organised a day to commemorate World War 1; veterans Ted Bootle and Alan King led the parade to the Village War Memorial. I was on holiday for our May meeting, Vice-Chairman John Graham took the Chair. The guest speaker was Michael Pickstock from Fressingfield, who spoke on his career with the BBC as an agricultural editior and correspondent. John Graham gave the usual vote of thanks. A birthday cake was provided for member Alan King who celebrated his 90th birthday this month. Bernard Mills, the treasurer gave his usual report. He will be the speaker at our next meeting on Thursday, June 12th. Our Poppy Appeal for Stradbroke and Wilby has reached the grand total of £3,395. The annual RBL Coffee Morning is to be held on Saturday, July 5th. Members will receive a reminder. All are welcome. Michael Burton (Branch Chairman)

Stradbroke Primary School We have had a very busy half term with many exciting things happening in school. Class I spent a warm sunny day at Redgrave and Lopham Fen. It is always an exciting visit; when they put on their wellies (and sunhats this year!) and explore the outside environment finding out about mini-beasts, wildlife and habitats. Class 2 visited the Church as reporters, finding out about special artefacts and symbols, using the iPads to record and report their findings. Class 3 and 4 have been following up their visit to Norwich Theatre when they saw an amazing performance of ‘Cats’. They have written amazing poetry, detailed character descriptions and built stage designs using ‘junk’ materials. Following a visit to Merit Plastic Mouldings in Diss to find out about local industry and the manufacture of plastic components, a group of children took part in a challenge to create promotional material for the company. With a creative approach, they produced posters, leaflets and logos – fantastic plastics! They all returned to school with buckets and spades they had seen being made and we welcomed Mr Ardeshir Nasarwanji to present prizes at our weekly merit assembly. As we approach the busy Summer Term, we have also been thinking about road safety and our Junior Road Safety Officers have become radio stars! With their passion for creating a safer environment outside school, they appeared as guests on Radio Stradbroke to discuss their issues and ask for the help of the local community to reduce the amount of parking and volume of traffic outside the school at the beginning and end of the day. As they quite rightly pointed out – we do not want to see an accident outside our school! Did you hear their show? Our Year 6 children are now busy researching and preparing for their summer visit to Derbyshire, when they will be walking through hills and dales, weaseling, rock-climbing and canoeing. They will also be scaling the heights of Mam Tor and exploring underground caves in the area. Hollowford is a new venue for us this year; in a familiar setting. We are planning many events for our last half term of the year- including Sports Day, a keeping fit day with Kidzfit and a Circus Skills Day. An active end to the year! Looking ahead we are celebrating our 150th Birthday in September – so more news to come next time! Mrs L Walsh – Head of School

Stradbroke High School Malaga Trip. On 2nd May, thirty one Year 8 – 10 students and four teachers visited Malaga on a 4 day Sports tour. During the Football tour we were able to experience Malaga vs. Elche in a Liga BBVA match (Spanish Football league), as well as having the opportunity to be coached by professional Malaga coaches and playing games in age groups against local Spanish opposition. The Year 8 boys managed to win their game 6 - 0, and the Year 9 and 10 boys winning 10 -1; two great results in massively hot conditions! We had a tour around the stadium and visited the Malaga club shop and purchased shirts and other merchandise. We were allowed in the home dugout and right next to the pitch as well. Seven girls went to play Netball. Every morning and afternoon we had a training session with Kelly and in our spare time we were by the pool! We did a lot of skills-based activities and mini half court games in order to be prepared for the game we had against Gibraltar on the Monday. When we first got to Gibraltar we went to see the monkeys, which we were all very excited about, especially Hollie Hunter who was disappointed that she could not stroke or feed them. After seeing the monkeys, we went and played our game. We were all a bit shocked when we started playing and realised how good the opposing team were, but we soon got into it and started putting our skills into use, working more as a team. Although we lost the game we did have fun and had the experience of playing against such a good team. On behalf of the pupils we would like to thank the staff and everyone who helped to make the trip so successful on behalf of the pupils. Christopher Brown and Atlanta Wilkinson, Year10 pupils, Stradbroke High School

Stradbroke Sports and Community Centre The Annual General Meeting was held on Tuesday, 20th May. Reports showed that the Centre continues to be well-supported and the profit for the year was £1,526. Peter Chetwynd has finished his time as Chairman after many years, and we are pleased to see Roger Turkington take over the reins. Tony Ambler has resigned as Licencee, the Management Committee now hold the Licence. David Merritt (Caretaker and Bar Person), Claudene Merritt (Bookings), Eileen Shelford (Treasurer), Margaret Streeter (Secretary), were re-elected and all the other members en bloc. We take this opportunity to thank everyone for their support in so many ways; particularly with our fund raising Cinema Nights. We start up again on Thursday, 18th September. There will be films on 16th October and 20th November, titles yet to be announced. Thank you to Wendy and her team, for doing a splendid job in choosing good films, and for giving us thought-provoking entertainment. Margaret Streeter

1st Fressingfield Scout Group 1st Fressingfield Scout Group has recently returned from their Annual Scout Group Camp at Thorpe Woodlands just outside Thetford. Sunshine and splashes was the theme this year with the scouts managing to miss the rain over the three days! This didn’t prevent the 80 strong contingent from getting wet with swimming at the Breckland Leisure centre and kayaking along the river as two water based activities. The annual camp is an opportunity for the whole Fressingfield Scouting family to come together to share their scouting from Beavers aged just six to Explorers aged 14-18. On Saturday the Group participated in a range of activities from High Ropes and climbing to assault courses and archery. Team building games and pioneering skills of knots and lashings were complemented by navigation training on the Sunday. A full on camp – full of smiles. Friendship and reflection also featured in a packed programme of activities with a ‘Scouts Own Service’ providing opportunity for the investing of new members into the Group by taking their Scout Promise. After the three days leaders were left exhausted and the young people tired and content! 1st Fressingfield Scout Group has a number of leadership role opportunities and would welcome anyone interested in joining the Group as a volunteer leader. The Group offers free uniform and training and a promise that the journey will be both satisfying and fun. If you are interested in joining our large and successful Group please contact Andrew on 07908 262623. Andrew Aalders-Dunthorne

Stradbroke Guides 4 and a half years later, we're still Guiding in Stradbroke and have big plans for this summer!! 15 Guides and 3 leaders will be attending NORJAM -VERY VERY exciting!! It's an international camp which takes places at the Norfolk Show Ground in August. There will be Guides and Scouts from around the world, including Thailand , Ireland and Pakistan ; amazingly we have been asked to 'buddy' 20 Nigerian Guides and their 5 leaders - this is a fantastic opportunity for our Guides to meet girls from a country that is so different from our own. We have been busy fundraising and applying for grants; Stradbroke Parish Council have very kindly donated to the NORJAM fund and the Adnams Charity have generously paid for our coach transport. The camp is a full week and as you can appreciate, a costly event to attend for our international friends. The Stradbroke Guides will be supporting our Nigerian Buddies by supplying camping equipment, if you can donate any of the following that would be marvellous! SLEEPING BAGS / PILLOWS / PILLOWCASES / BLANKETS / MELANINE PLATES, BOWLS & MUGS / ROLL MATS(YOGA MATS) / TENTS / CAMPING TABLES / GROUND SHEETS / GAS STOVES. Donations can be dropped off at Claret Cottage, Stradbroke or we will have a stall at the FESTIFUL :-) In advance - Thank you SO much. 1st Stradbroke Guides

Fressingfield & Stradbroke Brownies Hello! We have been running for over 50yrs and a few years ago we joined forces with the Stradbroke Brownies which worked out extremely well and we haven't looked back! This year Brownies is 100 years old and we have been working on tasks to complete our Big Brownie Birthday Badge; learning new games and songs, bringing our pets into brownies, creating compass challenges for our friends and testing our fitness with some Aerobics! We are also having an OPEN EVENING on Monday 9th June, so come along and meet the Brownies and Leaders, join in some games and create a craft :-) Fressingfield Primary School - 6.30pm until 7.30pm. Looking forward to seeing you there! 1st Fressingfield Brownies Candice Dudley

Friends of All Saints On Saturday, 3rd May, we held our Annual Plant Sale which was a great success, the best ever in fact. We made £235. This was entirely due to the generosity of local gardeners in giving us such a wonderful selection of plants to sell, and the interested and enthusiastic buying gardeners! Carol was also hosting her own "Gardener's Question Time" which helped to keep out the cold! FOASS invite you to a Grand Supper and Promises Auction, our main fund raising event for 2014; last year it was the very splendid Safari Supper. It will be held in the Community Centre on Saturday, 4th October. In order to make sure it's a most enjoyable evening, and that the Friends raise a goodly amount of money to keep the Parish Church well repaired for future generations, we are looking for people to "Promise a Promise". We already have some fascinating offers but could always do with more. If you have any special talents or services which you would like to give as a promise, then please contact either Carol Darling Tel: 388098, email caroldon01@gmail.com, or Margaret Streeter at m.streeter@btinternet.com Margaret Streeter

W.I Our May meeting was on what could only be described as dreadful day, cold, wet and windy, but the stalwarts that we are, were not deterred by it and we were delighted to welcome Maggie who was visiting us for the first time. We really hope she enjoyed her evening and that we will have the pleasure of her company again. Dorothy our President having welcomed everyone gave a resume of our first Kurling Match, which was against the Stradbroke Trust. It was great fun, and the rules were only very loosely adhered to, but we won. All those who played, agreed it was a game that grew on you, and were all for playing on a regular basis. Dorothy announced that there will be a Food Bank collection at our July meeting. May is the month when our annual NFWI Resolution is discussed and voted upon. The result of which is taken by our delegate to the AGM of the NFWI meeting in June. This year it concerned organ donation, and once again we have Jennifer to thank for steering us through the lively debate that ensued. We are so lucky to have Marine Biologist Laura Hanley as a member, and she delighted us with her talk on Sea Turtles Around the British Isles. Concentrating on her own particular favourite the Leatherback Turtle, who apparently can live for at least 100 years and every three to four years lays 110 eggs four times in that year. Laura’s talk was both fascinating and full of interesting facts about these endearing creatures. Lorraine thanked her in her own inimitable style. During the evening we were introduced to a new and quite lovely version of Jerusalem, which was much more suited to our voices, and after several plays members agreed that they really liked it. ON THE 12TH JUNE AT 7.30pm IS OUR HAUTE COUTURE EVENING. OPEN TO ALL. TICKETS £3.00 INCLUDING WINE. AVAILABLE FROM JUNE: - 01379 388009 Gill Bird

Stradbroke High School - Community Fundraising News May / June 2014 The Friends of Stradbroke High are an active group of pupils, parents, staff and community members who are supporting Stradbroke High School in its quest to become “outstanding”. To help achieve this aim we intend to support the school in each and every way we can. We are delighted to report that we have already had an extremely successful fundraising year with events including a ‘quiz’, a ‘car show’ and ‘scrap days’. Thank you to everyone who donated Scrap Metal we raised £557.20! We intend to carry this out again in November 2014 so please don’t throw anything away! We were extremely well supported at our last quiz night which raised £462.00. Our next Quiz Night is planned for 21st November 2014 starting at 7.30pm with a bar, soft drinks, sweets and prizes. Last year’s Car & Bike Show raised an amazing £2500.00! Our major fundraising event for this year is now being planned. Building on the success of last year’s event we are now planning CARnival 13th September 2014 – 10.00am – 4.00pm This promises to be an exciting fun day out for all the family. We will be offering new activities for our pupils and the whole community. There will be live music, fairground games, bouncy castles, two halls of art and craft stalls, a large classic car and bike display area, bbq, pancakes, ice cream and drinks. We are hosting a Decorate Your Bike Competition, more details will follow. If you would like to take part please contact Linda James on 01379 383987. Recent Purchases: Our latest purchases have included an outdoor table tennis & football table for the courtyards, six outdoor picnic benches, fifteen new board games for the library, DVD films for wet lunchtimes and a brand new heart defibrillator in case the unthinkable ever happens to anyone in the school. Thank you for your continued support. Linda James

Over 60s In May we had a singing duo entertain us. They got everyone involved with their singalongs and even got a few up dancing. They all thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon, and we have booked him again for November. At our last meeting, we welcomed two new members, Edna Scarff and Carol Sach, but sadly we have lost one of our long standing members Ella Owens, who passed away on 18th May. We have a full coach for a trip to Seacroft Holiday Centre on 29th May where we are having a 3 course carvery meal with entertainment after. Then on June 26th we have a trip to Felixstowe. Our meetings for June will be on the 5th and 19th in the community centre from 2 till 4pm. All will be made most welcome. Joan Grimes

Radio Stradbroke More ground breaking broadcasting issues forth from Radio Stradbroke, with the first monthly music night of 2014, preceded by Richard Pierce interviewing two pupils from the Primary School about Road Safety outside the school, an issue they clearly have concerns and views about, and a passion. As a community radio station, we are delighted to act as a mouthpiece for the initiative, hopefully the matter will reach the appropriate ears! On musical matters, the next broadcast is on Saturday 28th June 8 pm – 11pm with DJ Dave’s “Summertime Sunshine Special”. Always a good listen. Tune in: www.radiostradbroke.co.uk Michael Hugman

Stradbroke Swim & Fitness Swimathon celebrations! Once again Everyone Active Stradbroke Swim & Fitness Centre Swimathon effort has sent the “wow” factor off the scale with its success. Over 500+ swimming pools in the UK take part in the event and this year Stradbroke Swim & Fitness Centre was ranked 21st in the UK for swimmers taking part and 4th in Suffolk, not bad for a small rural village pool! 111 swimmers took part in the 3 day event, including several Stradbroke residents, who undertook either a 2.5K, 5k, 5k team swim or they set their own target distance. This year’s event was made even more special as Len Phoenix completed his 25th consecutive Swimathon event totalling a distance of 125K. Len has also assisted in the organisation of the event which has been taking part at the site for the last 20 years. To mark this special achievement Swimathon’s President and Olympic Gold medallist Duncan Goodhew MBE attended the site on Tuesday 18th April to oversee Len’s 25th Swimathon and also run master classes for fellow Swimathon swimmers. Over 40 swimmers took part in the master classes which lasted 30 minutes; Duncan gave the swimmers tips on how to improve their swimming techniques through fun drills. A special thank you has to be given to Stuart Jarrold (from Sky Sports) who compared for the evening, getting feedback from swimmers and Duncan throughout the night. Len along with Maria Smith (who was completing her 18th consecutive swimathon) completed the 5K charity swim in an impressive 1hour 24minutes. They came into the finish to everyone clapping and cheering them in which was a very rousing tribute to their hard work and dedication to the event. Len was presented with his Swimathon medal by Duncan and a goody bag with autographed hat and swim shorts. Stradbroke Swim & Fitness Centre also wanted to congratulate Len on his success by presenting him with a trophy, certificate and Red Letter Day experience voucher. Notable Stradbroke resident times were, fastest male Mark Nowell 1hour 16minutes, fastest female Maria Smith 1hour 24minutes, fastest boy George Tooley 1hour 38minutes, fastest girl Kirsty Welfare (Eye) 1hour 57minutes. In the team events Stradbroke’s very own ‘Keeble Team’ undertook the 5k challenge the family completed their swim in 1hour 43minutes. The annual challenge thrown out by the Stradbroke Managers to its colleagues saw 5 managers take on 5 lifeguards in the 5k team event. After all the splashing was over the Managers came out victorious by completing the swim in 1hour 31minutes to the Lifeguards 1hour 39minutes. Over the past 20 years Stradbroke has raised in excess of £110,000 for the various charities being supported by Swimathon, and this year will be no different with an estimated £2,000 being raised for Sport Relief. We would like to thank all the swimmers who have made this year’s event a big success and by raising money for such a worthy cause. We are already planning for next year’s event as we want to make it bigger and better than this years and raise even more money for charity. Maria Smith

Dress Thief comes to Halesworth! Cratfield writer, Natalie Meg Evans, is signing copies of her new novel The Dress Thief at Halesworth Books, 42 Thoroughfare, on Friday, June 13th from 6pm to 7.30. Do come along, have a glass of something, and meet the author. A second signing will take place the following day, Saturday June 14th at 11 – 1 pm at Woodbridge Bookshop, 66 Thoroughfare, Woodbridge. The Dress Thief is set in Paris in the late 1930s and tells the story of Alix Gower who dreams of joining the ranks of Coco Chanel in the high-stakes world of Parisian haute couture. But Alix also supports her family by stealing designs to create bootlegs for the foreign market. A hidden sketchbook and two minutes inside Hermès is all she needs to create a perfect replica, to be whisked off to production in New York. Then Alix is given her big break – a chance to work in one of the most prominent Parisian fashion houses – but at the price of copying the breakthrough Spring Collection. By saying yes, Alix risks everything she holds dear – her career, her good name and the respect of the man who loves her. Natalie spent two years researching and writing The Dress Thief which won the 2012 Harry Bowling prize for new fiction. She is now working on a follow-up novel for her publisher Hodder Quercus. The Dress Thief is available in paperback from most book sellers and as an ebook online from www.quercusbooks.co.uk, Book Depository and Amazon. Publication date is 5th June. Stradisphere Music Festival Stradisphere 2014 – STRADBROKE'S MUSIC FESTIVAL 5th & 6th SEPTEMBER Stradbroke will soon host the first music festival of this type, bringing our region’s best Bands and Acts as well as the two of the UKs finest tribute acts Bootleg Boss (Bruce Springsteen) and Kings Ov Leon (Kings Of Leon) to the community centre playing fields. The festival will be ticketed to a limited audience of 499 paying guests. This is a great opportunity for the community to enjoy a family friendly festival. The site will be controlled by a professional security team to ensure smooth running of the event and entrance will by Ticket Only. Food and a licensed bar will be available throughout the weekend. Tickets will be available from £25 per person with under 14s going free as long as they are accompanied by a paying adult. Tickets are available from The Queens Head, Stradbroke Library and The Laxfield Royal Oak. Proceeds from Stradisphere will go back to the community via SAS so a sell out show will enable the community to benefit from a substantial cash injection from the organisers. Alongside the bands playing will be two acts from "Stradbroke Cathedral & Cars” and “Cities of Gold” giving them the chance to play on a professional laid out stage and sound crew something that many acts would relish. We have also thought about the weather, booking a Circus style big top tent for the main stage and other marquees for the bar and second stage so you can forget the umbrella, as well as the weather the marquees will also act to contain the sound. Sounds will be projected away from local residents, all music will be finished by 22:30 again to alleviate any disruption. Again we are hoping this will be a fun packed day for all ages to come and enjoy the food and fingers crossed the sun too. For further information on other musicians you can visit the website www.stradisphere.co.uk and where there is also a link to our facebook page. Its a knockout/wipeout! Sunday 29th June – Stradbroke playing fields. Team registration 1:30pm. 2pm start. Team fun and games, featuring lots of water and gunge. The ‘It’s a Knockout/Wipeout’ event is now an established part of the annual Stradbroke Festifull weekend. This year the event will include favourites such as the head-splashing ‘heads-up’ relay and the ‘skittle run and dodge’ which requires lots of wet sponge throwing from the crowd. We also have a new event in the heats called ‘mixed up crazy sports’. Finalists will have the chance to compete in human table football and our fantastic new event ‘navigate the swamp’ obstacle course featuring our very own swamp mix of baked beans and rotten veg! Our gunge tank will be used to unleash horrible gunge on chosen victims from the crowd this year. You don’t have to be super fit and sporty to take part but you do have to be prepared to dress up, look very silly, be covered with gunge or swamp mix and get very wet. Teams should consist of 6 people which includes at least 1 responsible adult and at least 2 children aged 13 or under. Team captains should contact Julia Green in advance to register their team and guarantee participation – 01379 388855, email jgreen136@gmail.com or via the facebook page. Sports Roundup

Stradbroke Cricket Club Hope always springs eternal at the start of every cricket season, only for recurring issues of declining membership & committee numbers, player availability, and, of course, the weather. It is a wonder we get onto the field at all! On the positive side, both senior teams started with a win. The Vikings win over Bury IV (James Gilbee 6 for 19, Olly Bickley 38), could not quite be repeated against Eye (David Allum 34). The ‘A’ Team yoyo between excellence and despair. Woodbridge were beaten by 50 from Stuart Taylor & 4 for 42 from Gilbee, but then capitulated to 58 all out against IES II & 82 v Wortham (Owen Morgan 4 for 34). Where there is more is with the Junior Section. Thanks to Tom Smith’s zeal, numbers attending coaching increase week on week, culminating in good performances in matches. Even at a tender age, winning is the best panacea. Beating Worlingworth counts double. First the Under 11s displayed great maturity, followed by the Under 13s grabbing victory, not from the jaws of defeat, more like the digestive system, in one of the most exciting finishes witnessed at the ground. This added to some impetus in developing the girls section, makes everything, if not rosy, a subtle pastel shade in Stradbroke’s garden. Keep supporting your local cricket club. Michael Hugman

Stradbroke Neighbourhood Planning Stradbroke Community Centre was full to capacity on Monday evening 19th May for an initial consultation on 'neighbourhood planning'. Approximately 120 people attended the meeting to listen to a short presentation followed by interactive group discussions to encourage residents to express their views on Stradbroke and whether a Neighbourhood Plan would be worth pursuing for the village. We were delighted to see younger members of the community including children take part in the discussions and to include their views and thoughts. The outcome of the evening was an overwhelming majority in favour of developing a Neighbourhood Plan for Stradbroke with 94% of participants in favour. A total of 36 residents have offered to help the current team in developing a neighbourhood plan, with many more who may be able to assist in the future. There was a consensus on the need for affordable housing, better public transport, broadband and supporting local shops, jobs and businesses. A summary along with Q&As from the evening can viewed at both www.stradbroke.org.uk and www.stradbroke.info. The next steps include gaining the support from Stradbroke Parish Council and then getting started on the neighbourhood plan which we envisage will take approximately 2 years. We will of course have further engagement over the next couple of years on numerous occasions to ensure the neighbourhood plan fits the local needs and wishes of Stradbroke. I would like to say thank you to everybody who attended and also all those who helped us on the evening to make it happen. Regards, Oliver Last

A colour explosion to hit Suffolk in aid of EACH A colour explosion is coming to Ipswich this summer thanks to the launch of the brand new Treehouse Colour Dash. On Saturday 12th July 2014, runners dressed in white T-shirts will descend on Christchurch Park for the event, which is the first of its kind to be hosted across the whole of Suffolk. At every kilometre along the 5k route, runners and walkers will have a different coloured powdered paint thrown at them by The EACH Colour Pirates. By the end of the run, the white Tshirts will have become crazy artistic masterpieces. These fun and colourful events are taking the UK by storm, and are an innovative way to raise funds and have great fun at the same time. The special colour powder is 100 per cent safe and each colour zone will have a specific colour. The only rule is to wear white at the start. Money raised in sponsorship for the event will go to EACH. This is a family, fun event, and also great for signing up with your work colleagues, gym buddies and those who enjoy fun runs. This event is for everyone of all fitness levels who would like to have fun and support EACH. Nicola Atkinson of Fred Olsen Travel, who has sponsored the event, said: “We’re delighted For more information, or to sign up, please visit: www.each.org.uk Be part of the first Colour Dash Suffolk and support your local children’s hospice in a fun way! As most of you will know, Luke has stepped down from the role of Chairman of the Allotment Association, but remains as Vice Chair. With some trepidation I have become Chairman (or chairperson?) and despite my novice status as an allotment holder, I hope I can help to keep things running smoothly. Luke will still be very much around and will give us, as ever, the benefit of his wide gardening experience. If anyone wishes to join we still have a couple of vacant plots. Although taking on an allotment can seem daunting we have a rotavator which can be used to help with the initial soil preparation. Growing your own fresh produce is hugely satisfying, and a real sense of camaraderie has developed amongst the Allotmenteers. This year we are looking to raise money for a poly tunnel, as a shared resource. We are also considering keeping some bees, to help pollinate our crops and to hopefully produce a supply of honey. We are fortunate to have some experienced bee keepers in the village to guide us in this new venture. I have been away for two weeks, and when I left the country we had been through a spell of dry weather. Whilst I was baking in Egypt, it rained cats and dogs here, but what wonderful growing weather. I returned to blowsy hedgerows, and a burst into life at the allotments. My weeds of course are doing spectacularly well (what a shame the village show doesn't have a class for the largest thistle!) but my plants too are showing promise. Lots of lovely globe artichokes to be slathered in molten butter, and the first very tiny broad beans. I noticed some grey and yellow bugs on my strawberry plants and have looked them up to learn they are spittle bugs. If they become too numerous they can cause deformed fruits. Their nymph stage is the familiar gooey blob of spittle often spotted on the stems of plants and which can be physically removed if you check your plants regularly. Lots of lovely ladybirds around too this month which is encouraging. We are trying to keep the allotments healthy whilst sticking to generally organic principles, but this does mean staying vigilant for outbreaks of pests. Growing crops in a random fashion rather than in single crop blocks can help to impede the travel of insects through a crop, but it does make planting and harvesting a bit more difficult. My veg are all in blocks so I will have to be on my guard. My trip to Egypt reminded me how much I love middle eastern salads, and small broad beans make on of my favourites. Shell them and toss the little beans with finely chopped tomato and onion, and chopped parsley. Dress with olive oil, lemon juice and salt/pepper to taste. I also like this salad with dill or coriander in place of the parsley. We are having an Open Day on Sunday 3rd August between 11am and 3pm. We hope to have a few stalls selling produce and home-made crafts/cakes. We do hope you can come and have a wander around through the allotment site, the wildflower meadow and conservation pond. Admission is free. There will be light refreshments available as well. Gill Palmer

I was invited to present awards at the East of England Ambulance Service NHS Trust Long Service and Excellence awards ceremony held at Tattersall’s in Newmarket. The East of England Ambulance Service has been under the spotlight for a number of years because of managerial failings, resulting in poor response times, especially failing to meet targets for dispatching ambulances to life-threatening incidents in rural parts of Suffolk. However what has never been in question is the dedication and loyalty of the Trust’s frontline staff. During the evening we heard many moving stories about courage, outstanding service and the willingness to go above and beyond the call of duty. I was delighted and honoured to be asked to present the awards for those members of staff who had completed 35 years or more of service in the Ambulance service. In fact the combined years of service for those receiving awards was over 1,400, a truly humbling statistic. As an NHS Doctor I have worked alongside ambulance staff and know how hard they work and the enormous difference they make to people’s lives. We often read about the work they do at road traffic incidents, large disasters and distressing accidents but ambulance staff are also the first to see those elderly people who have suffered a fall or members of the public who suddenly feel unwell. Their expect help not only saves lives but their compassion greatly reassures patients at what can be a distressing and frightening time. Volunteers also play a key role in supporting our hard working paramedics and a number of Community First Responders – unpaid volunteers who respond to emergency calls on behalf of the ambulance service and provide care until the ambulance arrives were also honoured for the work they have done and continue to do for the Trust. The staff are what make the NHS such a great institution and one that I am proud to be part of. The dedicated staff of the East of England Ambulance deserves our thanks and appreciation for the work they do. Under the new leadership of Dr Anthony Marsh the Trust is now moving in the right direction. I am confident that our paramedics and first responders are being given the support they need, and resources are being better allocated to meet the needs of people in our rural communities in Suffolk. I was delighted to visit Stradbroke High School earlier this month, where I met Head Teacher Andrew Bloom and Mr Andy Smith, Chair of Governors. I enjoyed speaking to a large group of students in a question and answer session which covered a wide range subjects. I hold regular constituency advice surgeries locally to help people who have problems.
