TOMMY WITH A MISSION Tommy Walsh, well known for his exploits with Alan Titchmarsh and Charlie Dimmock in the TV series ‘Ground force’, presented the Radio 4 appeal on behalf of Tools With A Mission on Sunday 13 May. TWAM reports; “Already we have received a great response for financial support but more especially to Tommy’s great understanding and passion for the work of TWAM. Tommy has taken part in various Charity Challenges building homes and gardens in Africa and has seen for himself the need in poorer communities for tools. He even says that the tools that he was able to leave with the people after finishing the projects were better received than giving them a Rolls Royce. He’s seen the difference a set of tools can make for a life”. Give a HAND UP rather than a HAND OUT Last year over 434 separate organisations benefited from 220 tonnes of aid shipped from TWAM’s warehouse in Ipswich. At Stradbroke Baptist Church we are still collecting good trade tools (building, plumbing, electricians, mechanics) typewriters, computers, sewing machines and all sorts of equipment which will prove useful in the developing world. Stradbroke & Fressingfield Medical Centre Announcement IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR PATIENTS OF FRESSINGFIELD & STRADBROKE MEDICAL CENTRE UPGRADE OF CLINICAL COMPUTER SYSTEM ON 28th JUNE On Thursday 28th June 2012 we are upgrading to a new computer system called EMIS Web. This is an essential upgrade to ensure that we remain as efficient as possible. We will try really hard to minimise any inconvenience to patients, but unfortunately disruptions may be inevitable while we get to grips with the new computer system. If you are due to order your repeat medication at the end of June or the beginning of July, it would really help the practice if you could allow three working days notice rather than the usual two working days, this will allow our dispensers time to process your request and minimise any disruption to you during this period. You may also find that during this time there could be disruptions to our online appointment booking system, text appointment reminder system, self-check in systems and patient calling in boards. But we do not envisage any disruption to the online medication ordering system which is available on our website. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our patients for their understanding and apologise in advance for any disruptions that may occur. Dear Friends, Last Sunday, May 27th, was Whitsunday, the Feast of Pentecost, when we remember the coming of the Holy Spirit to Jesus’s disciples, transforming them into men who could speak with such great confidence and authority to the crowds gathered in Jerusalem that thousands became the first Christians, and the Church was born. What better day to re-commission Jennifer Chetwynd as a Lay Elder in this parish, a title that means wisdom and experience, and a commitment to live and explain the Gospel? Two of the prayers we used summon all church members to active service. “Father, Son and Holy Spirit, we dedicate to you our thoughts, our words, our gifts, our deeds; the working of our hands, the thinking of our minds, the loving of our hearts. Take us and use us in your service, that all the world may give you glory,” and “God of power, may the boldness of your Spirit transform us, may the gentleness of your Spirit lead us, may the gifts of your Spirit equip us to serve and worship you, always.” We know of power in our modern lives, we feel the wind and the flames of the Sun cheering our summer days. We acknowledge the power of H M The Queen through her Government and all who serve her, and we celebrate SIXTY YEARS, A DIAMOND JUBILEE of her reign. Our Morning Service on Sunday, 3rd June, at 11.00 am, is open to all who wish to rejoice at this wonderful anniversary, with hymns, readings and prayers that will put our thanks to the Queen into words, and there is a Letter of Thanksgiving for you to sign which will be sent to Buckingham Palace. In the church are flowers and displays of royal memorabilia, plates, mugs, pictures, banners and more, and a new altar frontal, and on Monday and Tuesday, the amazing ‘re-created painting’ of the Queen, done at Wingfield Barns in May. Please note the times when the church will be open: 10.00 am to 12 noon, and 2.00 – 4.00 pm on Saturday, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. On Sunday, we’ll stay open after the Service, from 12 noon to 2,00 pm for the BIG LUNCH. Please bring all you need for food and drink. We’ll supply chairs and tables. The music of Stradbroke Brass will join Dougie Chittock in the morning; in the afternoon, he will play sixty sponsored favourite hymn tunes. Have you submitted yours? Sunday, 24th June, invites us to the Annual St Peter’s Morning Service at Athelington Church at 11.30 am, followed by Lunch in the garden at Meadow Farm.Tickets are £10.00 each from Evelyn Adey, 01728 628428, or Mary Hawes, 01728 628608. Please join us there and then. With all good wishes, David Streeter. All Saints Church Cleaning - Thursday, 7th.June, 10.00 am onwards. Margaret Streeter

Other business: This was the Annual Meeting of the Parish Council. Ann Kerr, who had been Chairman since 2005, stood down from that office and Nick Stones was elected Chairman for the coming year. Members voted for Ann Kerr to be Vice Chairman. Membership of the various working parties and committees was decided. The annual audit report and governance statement was approved and signed. A notice will be posted on the board to advertise the availability of the accounts for scrutiny in due course. SpeedWatch had been discussed in the past but, at that time, there had been no volunteers forthcoming. Now, however, two people had intimated they would be happy to undertake SpeedWatch duties if enough others came forward. It might be possible to link with a neighbouring parish to spread the cost, shifts and locations. All those interested in participating should contact the Clerk. PCSO Dave Faulkner informed the Council that there had been 28 crimes over the past year. He again stressed the need for vigilance as heating oil thefts, vehicle crimes and burglaries were still taking place. It is important to remember to lock sheds, garages and outhouses and doors and windows. The police station at Eye is now only manned at the following times: Tuesday and Wednesday 1 -3pm; Thursday 9 – 11 am. Everyone was urged to sign up to Police Direct. As ever, there have been complaints about dog fouling in the vicinity of the primary school. If you witness this antisocial behaviour please contact the Clerk with full details and the complaint will be pursued. Life in the Legion The guest speaker at The May meeting was Tony Chaplin from The Bacton Branch who spoke about his career in The Royal Navy. This was very interesting and the vote of thanks was given by Jeremy Higgins on behalf of the 17 members present. The highlight of the business part of the meeting was a presentation of a bouquet of flowers to our Branch Welfare Officer and Standard Bearer Joyce Cooper for her organization of the recent very successful Band Concert and Drum Head Service. The presentation was made by Ted Bootle our Branch President as the photograph. I reported on The Suffolk Anzac service held at St Edmunds Church, Southwold, and the H Group Meeting held at Brome Community Centre hosted by the Hoxne Branch, which I attended with Joyce Cooper. Branch Treasurer Bernard Mills presented his monthly report, and Branch Secretary Jeremy Higgins gave out details of future events which members may be interested in attending. There will be no branch meeting in June but there will be a Committee Meeting at The Chantry, Stradbroke at 6 pm on Thursday June 7th. This will be to discuss the forthcoming Annual Coffee Morning at The Rectory on July 7th , and our stand at The Horham Bygones Country Rally on June 9th. The next Branch Meeting with a speaker will be on July 5th at 11.30am at The Kings Head Laxfield. Michael Burton – Branch Chairman.
W.I At our monthly meeting in May Stradbroke WI welcomed our Federation Chairman, Jane Collier, together with another member of the Board, and our ex Federation Chairman. May is our Resolution Meeting and this was ably presented by Jennifer Chetwynd. After discussion it was agreed that this should go on to our National AGM which this year is being held in the Royal Albert Hall. The Resolution calls on the Government to increase investment in the training, employment and retention of midwives and follows last year’s Resolution for the Support of Local Libraries. After the business section of our meeting the Stradbroke WI Circle Dancing Group, led by our teacher Thelma, gave a demonstration of 4 dances and then invited everybody to join in. After a look of terror on some faces everybody joined in a few easier dances and there was great enjoyment and merriment. Our next meeting is on Thursday 14th June with an outing in the morning to a shoe factory and our normal monthly meeting will be held as usual in the Community Centre at 7.30 pm. Dorothy Readman

Stradbroke High School - An 11-16 Academy Stradbroke High School has become the first high school in Suffolk to receive the St John Ambulance Schools Mark. The St John Ambulance Schools Mark is awarded to schools that show a significant commitment to the safety and health of their pupils, workforce and the wider community. The school achieved the Schools Mark after deciding to run a St John Ambulance basic first aid course as part of an Enhanced Learning Day. PE teacher Dianna Firbank, who helped to organise the course, said: First aid training compliments the syllabus for both PSHE and GCSE PE, so we ran a basic first aid course and now have the St John Ambulance Schools Mark. Congratulating the school on achieving the award, Tony Curd, County Commander for St John Ambulance Suffolk, said: ”Stradbroke High School is to be congratulated on achieving this standard which demonstrates their commitment to learning first aid”. 1st Fressingfield Scout Group 1st Fressingfield Scout Group has recently returned from their Annual Scout Group Camp at Eaton Vale just outside Norwich. Sunshine and splashes was the theme this year with the scouts managing to miss the rain over the three days! This didn’t prevent the 75 strong contingent from getting wet with swimming at the Riverside Pool and rafting along the river as two water based activities. The annual camp is an opportunity for the whole Fressingfield Scouting family to come together to share their scouting from Beavers aged just six to Explorers aged 1418. The Beaver colony had a puppet making workshop and then entertained other campers with their very special interpretation of Cinderella. Other activities included an afternoon in Norwich City Centre to complete the ‘Norwich Monopoly Run’ navigating around the landmarks of Norwich solving clues as they went. Wide games and sports were played late into the evenings with a make shift cinema entertaining the crowd before bedtime. Team building games and pioneering skills of knots and lashings were complemented by a visit to Mousehold Heath to construct make shift shelters in the woods. Explorers also had an opportunity sharpen their marksmanship skills with a session on the air rifle range while younger members enjoyed the open space and a train ride at Eaton Park. Friendship and reflection also featured in a packed programme of activities with a ‘Scouts Own Service’ providing opportunity for the investing of new members into the Group by taking their Scout Promise. After the three days leaders were left exhausted and the young people tired and content! Andrew Aalders-Dunthorne Group Scout Leader commented; “Our annual camp is one of the highlights of the 1st Fressingfield Scout Group’s year, it is great to see the young people from the smallest 6 year old Beaver Scout to the largest of 16 year old Explorer Scout working and playing together.” “It is also great to see our dedicated team of volunteer leaders who freely give their time to ensure that our young people get quality experiences that will stay with them forever, also have such a great time.” Andrew added. 1st Fressingfield Scout Group has a number of leadership role opportunities and would welcome anyone interested in joining the Group as a volunteer leader. The Group offers free uniform and training and a promise that the journey will be both satisfying and fun. If you are interested in joining our large and successful Group please contact Andrew on 07908 262623.

Wingfield and District Gardening Club Our April meeting was an extremely interesting talk given by Ian Limmer from Peter Beales Rose Nursery on climbers and rambler roses. This was profusely illustrated by slides of varieties with nuggets of information on their production and care. This begins with the budding on to Dutch root stock of the varieties, which are then grown on in the field toegther with many in containers. The nursery shows at Chelsea and Ian stressed that these shows generate great interest and export orders. Also mentioned was the need to feed roses about three times during the summer to combat the effects of black spot and mildew. The evening finished with the opportunity to buy at reduced cost examples of some of the beautiful roses produced by this nursery. Our June meeting will be a Saturday morning visit to Thorpe Hall which will start at 11.00 am on 23rd June. Superb gardens in an Elizabethan setting. Stradbroke Allotment and Gardeners Association Just a quick update on the progress we are making with the field bought by the Village Trust for allotments, community orchard, woodland and wildflower meadow. Following a number of meetings we have submitted the applications for funding to help with the establishment of the site. Roger Turkington from the Village Trust has done a huge amount of the work involved with this and fingers crossed that we will be successful. Requests for plots have been good and at the moment we have only four full size plots left out of twenty eight, if the demand continues we may have to extend the site. If you want a plot and haven't come forward yet please contact me as soon as possible. A couple of people contacted the Parish Council about having a plot last year but didn't give any details, so if you haven't spoken to me or Helen Pleasance(SAGA secretary) please get in touch. Please look out for future fund raising events to help raise money for this great future asset for our village. Please contact Luke Heydon, tel:01379 384 778. Stradbroke Family Pet Show 2012 So, you’ve got a pet and don’t know what to do with it at 2.00 pm on 30 June 2012? Well, SAS are here to help – why not enter it into the Stradbroke Festifull’s very own pet show and have a fun day out with all the family. There will be classes for every sort of animal imaginable so all you have to do is turn up and enjoy the day. From Rabbits and Rats to Guinea Pigs and Gerbils; from Snakes and Spiders to Turtles and Tortoises; whatever the animal, there’s a class for you. We even have a very special class for anyone who doesn’t have a live pet – A Soft Toy class! So if you’ve got an animal or a “teddy” who shares your life, bring it along and let it make lots of new friends. The Dog show as always will be the biggest event and includes classes such as “the dog that looks most like its owner” the scruffiest, the best puppy, the golden oldie, the one that hasn’t won anything yet, and so on. Sponsored by Skinners we have rosettes for the winners of every class, and a prize for the Best Dog in the Show, this really will be a fun day to remember. What are the rules? Easy, dogs must be kept on a lead at all times and all other pets must arrive in a cage or other “suitable container” but no horseboxes please – we can’t cope with animals bigger than ourselves! Fair Trade News Shop inside Eye Parish Church opens Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Fridays 11am – 1pm. At the Church Shop we have had a makeover, changing the layout and décor as much as we can given the nature of the constraints of the space – and we certainly refreshed our lovely shop. We also decided to try something different, and hold a Book Fair in celebration of World Book Day at the beginning of March, which was a storming success – raising £365 for Church funds and £80 for Self Help Africa. It was so successful, that we shall be holding another book fair during Open Gardens Weekend in Eye (9th & 10th June) – this time in the Vicarage Garden. At the Book Fair we served Cafetiere coffee and went for a bit of café culture, the proceeds of which were the funds raised for Self Help Africa – so we thought we’d continue this good work by hosting a coffee morning on every Friday opening from now onwards, again raising funds for the nominated Church charity of the month. Please feel free to drop in and support this initiative! Of course, the biggest motivation there is for all of this effort, is the outcome in terms of donations that we have been able to make to four smaller scale international development charities. Each of these charities has received £562 from funds raised via the Fairtrade sales activity. Traidcraft Exchange are the charitable arm of Traidcraft plc, the fairtrade company, and they will be using the funds to support and identify further potential fairtrade partners. Kerala Crafts are a small charitable organisation working with a group of Nuns in India who operate a factory that makes handwoven baskets (which we sell in the shop) – the funds sent will help them provide water tanks for the weavers so that the raw materials can be kept supple. CHIPS (Christian International Peace Service) has a project in Ghana headed up by our local friend Paul Rose, working on conflict resolution between tribes & looking at ways to improve opportunities for people. Finally, we have also donated to Mercy In Action, a charity working with families in the Philippines. Our money there will be used to purchase cooking facilities and several passenger carrying tricycles – all of which will be used to start microbusinesses and improve incomes for families that the charity supports. Our donations are only made possible when you visit the Church Shop and purchase goods from us, or if you see me at your local fair or market, or if you contact me for baskets of goods to sell at your Church or Social group. So please help us to stay motivated and come and see us, and the revamped Church Shop very soon! Contact: Sue Watson 01379 384558.
Local Alzheimer’s Society Support Groups Lots of families are affected by dementia, and when it happens to you, there’s a lot to learn. If you are worried about your memory, who is the best person to talk to? How can you best support someone with dementia? Where can you find out what help is available, how to pay for extra care if you need it, what the legal issues might be and so on? These are all questions that can arise. People with dementia and their families can live a good life but it helps to have the right information and support. Alzheimer’s Society run various support groups for people living with dementia, their carers and families, including ones in Eye and Leiston. These groups are a valuable opportunity for people facing similar challenges, to share their experiences and support each other. If you would like more information about these groups or to talk to someone from Alzheimer’s Society about any aspect of dementia telephone 01502 514712. Alison Begley, Support Worker

Stradbroke Cricket Club It is little wonder that Adele wanted to set fire to the rain. We seem to have been plagued by bad weather. Never before have we had to cancel four weeks of outdoor coaching, or so many junior matches. It reflects great credit on the age group team managers that they have been able to get teams together to start playing matches. Yet in the space of four days what was a desolate paddy field of a cricket square, now resembles an over baked cookie! At least the sunshine has brought out the cricketers, although sadly not enough. We were forced to concede a B Team match last week. I urge those players for whom apathy is the overriding emotion to try to commit to play a few games before the situation worsens, and we lose one of our adult teams, and inevitably some players. What games have been played have been a mixed bunch. The Vikings debut in the Two Counties League saw a thoroughly heartening victory over Woodbridge II. Adam Van Der Looy (74) helped us to 172, then Josh Franklin-Mann (6 for 5) skittled the opposition. The A Team have lost 3 games, including a thrilling cup tie to Wortham by 6 runs. Alan Barker looks in ominously good form, but needs support. The B Team are finding life in a higher league a struggle, but as exams & University terms come to an end, hopefully things will improve. Remember, the club runs 1 Saturday & 2 Sunday League teams, an Academy XI, Under 15, Under 13, & 2 Under 11 sides, a girls team, and are offering coaching in Stradbroke Primary School as well as at the club on Friday nights 6pm to 8pm. The next ‘club night’ incorporating a barbecue is on Friday 22nd June. Please support your local cricket club, while you still have one. Michael Hugman
A Fantastic Day for Stradbroke U10s, 12 May 2012 The first hot day of the year saw SYFC U10s battling it out at the 6-a-side tournament at Diss Town FC, a competition which attracted 41 teams from all over Suffolk and Norfolk and over 300 players. Despite only having a few friendly, non-League matches under their belts this season, the U10s blazed through the opposition in the Group 1 stages – Harleston, Laxfield, Long Stratton, Diss Hawks, Rickinghall – all fell to some fantastic interplay between Tom Earl and Luke Forster up front, Will Ramsay in midfield and Owen Holland, Calvin Lintott/Brandon Edwards and Tommylee Debenham who created a defensive barrier that left goalkeeper George Tooley rarely troubled. What looked like our toughest opponents yet, joint-group-leaders Rickinghall, were brushed aside 31 in a game in which Tom’s pace and determination was duly rewarded with a fine hat-trick. What would surely have been Goal of the Day – a spectacular Rooney-esque overhead kick just inside the box by Luke – left the crossbar shaking and drew gasps and oohs and ahhs from the crowd. At 5 p.m. the Final beckoned – against the Group 2 champions, Diss Tigers, who were also undefeated. Stradbroke entered a hostile arena of deafening support for Diss but showed themselves to be equals to the top-of-Division 1 League side. After conceding quickly in the first half Stradbroke lifted their heads, dug in and began to turn the match. Minutes from the end, Brandon volleyed from the halfway line to bring the score level, to screams of excitement from the Stradbroke parents and wild jubilation from our players. Next, sudden-death: a nervy penalty shoot-out. Their keeper leapt for the final shot, and saved: 5–4 to Diss Tigers on penalties. The boys were disappointed to be runners-up on the day – but their play and conduct is something of which they should be truly proud. Kate Holland, SYFC U10s

Local Gardeners Notes Make the most of the good weather, if the year so far has been anything to go by we will probably be back down to single figures again in a week or so. After all the strange weather we have had it feels very special to have some fine weather, and the gardens look marvelous. I grow quite alot of vegetables for someone and we have sown a fair amount of seed outside, we certainly had the rain but the temperature just wasn't good enough so much of the seed didn't germinate, all the things sown in the greenhouse were fine apart from a little mouse damage. We have had good results with globe artichokes from seed and for the first time for me I have grown asparagus from seed, it produces tiny little asparagus plants (not terribly surprising), they look slightly prehistoric. The garden where I have been helping has a large Victorian heated greenhouse and brick raised beds, a couple of which can also be heated, for things like pineapples I presume. It has inspired me for when I get my allotment, one of my relations was a Victorian engineer and architect, he designed a number of interesting buildings and also helped on the ironwork for Crystal Palace, who knows, maybe my allotment will have it's very own orangery or something equally as impressive. When the allotments get under way there are also plans to plant a small area of wood, in my travels as a gardener I often come across tree seedlings, I would like to ask anyone who comes across any, to collect them, rather then dig them up and chuck them onto the compost heap, plant them up in a small pot. In the autumn we can use them to plant in with the other trees, that way we will have some nice local trees. We are particularly interested in native trees like oak, holly, yew and field maple, all seed easily, horse chestnut would also be good although not strictly native. I recently found a nice sweet chestnut seedling that I am currently trying to grow into a bonsai tree, or at least my attempt at it. I also have quite alot of small walnut trees that seem to do well around here, thanks to the squirrels. This year I have come across a robin nesting in some ones potting shed, it was in a trug under a pair of gardening gloves. We have also had a robin nest in our garage, the fledgling liked to jump around from beam to beam when I went in, it is quite a good place because the cats can't get in there, and hopefully the baby bird can get out when it needs to. About five years ago my daughter made a bird box in her DT class, not to be too nasty but it looked a little on the flimsy side of things, I dutifully fixed it to the wall outside her bedroom, and much to our surprise it has had Blue Tits in it for the last five years. After this year I think it may need some renovation as the front wall is starting to come away! June is a great time in the garden, with a bit of rain and lots of sun the beginning of the month is probably my favorite time of year. When I was a child June meant silage making into hay making, lots of fun for a little chap, I spent most of my time jumping around in the silage pit as it was filled with grass, I am sure I was lots of help. I have managed to ramble on for most of the article without talking much about gardening, so things to do in the garden are as follows, if you have wild areas of grass try to cut paths through, that helps to make it look purposeful. There is nothing wrong with having wild areas in the garden, patches of nettles are probably more beneficial then most herbaceous borders and if you are lucky enough to have wildflowers you should leave them to do their thing. It may be a bit late but try to stake tall plants before they get broken by winds, things like delphiniums and l eucanthemums look much better with a bit of help. It's still not too late to mulch the beds between plants and as shrub roses are about to start flowering make sure you dead head them to keep the flowers coming, David Austin roses are particularly good at repeat flowering and also keep the fragrance of old roses. Finally, we went to Minsmere bird reserve recently, they are doing alot of work to improve the site with a new visitor centre and better paths. As we arrived a heavily camouflaged man came running past saying 'have you seen the Ryeneck', Sally turned to me and asked what he said and I pretended to know exactly what he was talking about, we proceeded to a mass of people peering into a patch of brambles. With the help of our camouflaged friend's monocular we all had a look at a small grey bird, related to a woodpecker and rarely seen in Britain. As we waited in the crowd you could hear text messages going off letting people know of other rare bird sighting and the crowd slowly moved off, a slightly weird experience but good fun and very friendly and helpful people. Until next time, enjoy the summer as it may not last long, and happy gardening, Luke.

We are all very proud of Suffolk’s rural heritage and our beautiful countryside, which is enjoyed by everyone. I recently spoke in a debate in Parliament about the Government’s changes to the planning system, and I am pleased that the Government’s new planning reforms help to protect the Suffolk countryside from inappropriate development. In reforming the planning system, the Government has listened to the concerns of people in Suffolk and elsewhere in rural Britain by committing to develop former industrial sites (or brownfield areas) and focus on town centre regeneration before building on the open countryside. This will also ensure that our valuable farming land in Suffolk is protected from overdevelopment. What Suffolk needs is small scale development to provide local homes for local people, whilst we also need to develop housing for our growing number of older people, which means providing more adaptable and bungalow homes. I am in favour of increasing the supply of affordable housing for young people and families so that they can continue living and working locally, but it is crucial that development is always tied to local jobs, key road and rail infrastructure projects as well as new schools and improved local healthcare. This is what the Government means when it talks about sensitive, sustainable development, and it is what we must see in Suffolk if we are to maintain the distinctive character, customs and traditions that sustain our rural communities. Having rapid ambulance response times are an issue of great importance for our rural areas in Suffolk, particularly given the large number of older people living locally. I was disappointed to uncover figures recently that show the East of England Ambulance Service Trust is still failing to meet national targets for responding to emergencies in rural towns and villages. It is not acceptable that residents in rural parts of Suffolk are continuing to receive a second-rate ambulance service, despite assurances from the Chief Executive of the East of England Ambulance Trust last year that improvements would be made. Our paramedics in Suffolk work extremely hard and do an excellent job providing life-saving treatment to people on a daily basis, which is why it is essential that they are properly supported by the management. I have another meeting with the Chief Executive of the Ambulance Trust in June, along with Norman Lamb, the MP for North Norfolk, where I shall be holding the management to account for their continued failure to improve response times in our rural communities. Finally, I regularly hold surgeries across Suffolk, where residents can come and speak to me privately about any concerns or issues. I can’t help with everything, but I shall always do my best for you, and fight for your best interests if you need my help. My surgeries in June will be taking place in Mendlesham and in Whitton, North Ipswich.
