Missing Minou Update

Minou Returned! — Vicky says: “29th April 2017: Minou has just come home. 3 weeks missing and has waltzed in the cat flap - filthy, thin, hungry and thirsty! Vet checked her over. She's lost 1.5kg - she's so thin my heart aches for her. She's eating well and is currently loving all over me. I'm so so happy and so grateful.”

Sunday worship in June Sunday Services at 10:15am – Guest Speakers 11th. G. Lee 18th Fathers Day 25th B. Francis Sunday 4th June 11am—Joint Service with All Saints Church At Baptist Church—Guest Speaker Rev G Lee— Everyone Welcome We welcome you to join us – our activities for June Tues. 13th & 27th 7:30pm Bible study, Wed.14th 12:30pm Lunch Club, Sat 17th 10am Create & Chatter Wed 28th Drop In For Coffee Every Day - Father’s Day The diary informs us that Sunday 18th June is Father’s Day, the intention is that it: “Is a celebration honouring fathers, celebrating fatherhood, paternal bonds, and the influence of fathers in society”. For many it will mean a card or telephone call on that date, for others it is a time to reflect, look back and be grateful for the positive influence of a good dad. Sadly, this is not always the situation for some people do not know their biological father, and perhaps have missed out on the influence of a loving dad to provide a positive example of fatherhood. As Christians we should celebrate, for every day is Father’s day, each day and all that we have is gifted to us by a loving heavenly Father. I’m reminded of a poem which was often recited at chapel anniversary services many years ago. Said the robin to the sparrow, “I would really like to know, why these human beings rush around and worry so”. Said the sparrow to the robin, “I think that it must be that they have no heavenly Father such as cares for you and me” Each day all of us have choices, we can make a positive choice to do our best to help and not hinder our companions on the journey of life, equally we need to thank Father God for the gift of life itself. For every day is our Father’s day. For details please contact:John Ling 388751 (Church Elder)

All Saints - From the Rectory Dear Friends and Neighbours,

As I write this in mid May in unsettled and unseasonably cold weather, I’m very much hoping that June will be as it’s often referred to, ‘flaming June’, and that we will enjoy some warmth that has so far eluded us. The weather isn’t the only thing that is unsettled at the moment. We’re living in what feels like an increasingly unsettled world. There are lots of changes, including many in global political leadership, and of course, we ourselves here in the UK are about to face another general election, with the potential of change and thereby, uncertainty. Life was very uncertain for the early Christians after Jesus’ death. It hadn’t been easy for them during his lifetime and even having seen him after his resurrection, life seemed very uncertain until they received the Holy Spirit on that first Pentecost, as Jesus had promised would happen. Some translations talk of the Holy Spirit as the comforter, the advocate, the helper and the counsellor. Jesus told the disciples they would be ‘clothed with power from on high’ and the Holy Spirit would be with them, alongside them, bringing them help and hope in all they were to face. On 4 June the Church celebrates Pentecost, remembering the Holy Spirit coming down on the disciples in Jerusalem. That same Holy Spirit is also available to us. If we put our trust in God, we too can know the hope and help of the comforter, advocate, and counsellor. A hope that will ease our fears of the unknown and reassure us that we can trust in God. Pray wherever you are that God’s Holy Spirit would be with you giving you a fresh understanding of God’s love and a real sense of his hope and help whatever the future bring. God Bless Cathy Revd Cathy Bladon, Curate th

May meeting. The meeting opened with the usual offices and notices where Gill thanked our hostesses Dorothy and Jenny for their beautiful flowers and the hoped for refreshments. Birthday posies were presented to Wendy Reeves and in her absence a posy was collected on behalf of Carol Philpott. Our thanks were also offered to Dorothy, Vivienne and Sue for their work in collecting sorting and delivering our magazine to us, thank you ladies. As it was the resolutions meeting our next task was to discuss and vote on the two resolutions which were to alleviate loneliness and to take action to clear the plastic soup that is filling our oceans. The actual wording of the resolutions was more precise. The members voted to support these resolutions and so we moved on to the evenings’ entertainment Charmaine Cooper a young member of our W.I . talked to us about her love of music and how she has been involved with music all of her life . Her family are musical and number music teachers among them, her mother and grandmother .We heard how at the age of 12 years she realised that she had potential and would be able to forge her future around music and set out to do just that. This may sound a bit dry but I must tell you that her stories were interspersed with hilarious anecdotes and beautiful musical interludes to demonstrate her progress through her education and training to become a music teacher to young people. We were treated to some of her early favourite pieces and on to exam pieces by composers with unpronounceable names but amazing talent. The evening flew by with an enthralled audience who were captivated by her piano playing and her expertise on the flute. Apparently it is not a good idea to change your haircut just before performing on the flute as it appears a mouthful of uncontrolled new hairstyle can cause havoc with the playing of said flute. We had a wonderful evening and eagerly await the next instalment, thank you so much Charmaine. Our next meeting is an open meeting on June 8th at 7.30pm when we will be treated to the songs of Marie Lloyd by Rachel Duffield who will be in character. Visitors will be asked to pay £4 for an evenings’ entertainment with refreshments so please come along and join us. Tickets available from Gill Bird, June Hampson and Jane Gemmill . Prue Rush

Stradbroke High School

Congratulations to our Young Enterprise company 'Quality Sweets' on accepting two awards at the recent Suffolk Young Enterprise Business Awards: Runner Up Award, presented by Ransomes Jacobsen Ltd. and Social Innovation Award presented by The East of England Co-operative Society. Twenty four schools and colleges entered the competition initially. After trading since September and submission of company reports and accounts, eight finalists were selected to attend the Awards Celebration at the University of Suffolk. Following trade stand interviews and company presentations to an audience of around 200 people, our team really impressed the audience and judges, receiving rapturous applause during the evening. Mrs Clarke said "We were the smallest team and this was the first time our school has taken part so we are especially proud of our achievement and I am so pleased for the company because they have been so committed and used their entrepreneurial skills to an outstanding effect. Mr Brown's support as the Business Adviser has been excellent and very much appreciated by everyone involved." Pat Trimmer, Suffolk's Manager for Young Enterprise said " I am very proud of you, seeing how your team has developed and so much hard work put into achieving the award. Well done! All your hard work shone through at the event and for the first year of entering into the scheme, to be awarded Runner-Up was well deserved. " Quality Sweets produces gift wrapped confectionery packaged in recycled glass jars. The company also set up a tuck shop in school and distributed display boxes of its products at rural events and to local retailers who sold the sweets on the company's behalf. Representatives from EDF Energy, University of Suffolk, BT, Adnams and Associated British Ports judged the companies' performances across ten different criteria and awards proceedings were led by Eddy Alcock OBE who chaired the Judging. All other awards were sponsored by ten further prominent companies from different industries across the county. Stradbroke High School awarded Silver Certificate by the Incorporated Society of Musicians Stradbroke High School has been awarded the ISM / ISM Trust’s Silver Certificate. This means that more than 15% of all the school’s GCSE students achieved an A* to C in GCSE music. This award for achievement in music places the school in the top 129 schools in the whole country. Deborah Annetts, Chief Executive of the ISM – the professional body for musicians – congratulated the school, saying: ‘We are delighted to recognise Stradbroke High School’s achievement in music and celebrate the commitment to music education shown by the school in their high uptake and high achievement of pupils." Stradbroke Archive and Records Association.

There was a rest from the war deaths reported back to the village during May of 1917. This would be a relief for the Clerk of the Church, Mr Bayles, who would climb the steps of the church tower and sound the Death Knell to announce to the village of each loss. However, this was short lived as the toll was performed again in June for Charles Ephraim Clarke who died from his wounds in a Casualty Clearing station on 4th June 1917 at just 19 years of age. Charles had lived in Chapel Cottages with his parents Edgar and Caroline and 11 siblings. His father was the village cobbler and by 1911 Charles was working as an errand boy for G Corbyn. Sadly, both his mother and 3 of his siblings had pre-deceased him at that time. (1911 census return) We remember Gunner Charles E Clarke with honour on the Stradbroke War Memorial.

This month we are pleased to report that SARA has passed the 4000 mark for uploaded digital images and documents on the Stradbroke Village Archive website. We are also pleased to announce that the uploading of The Geoffrey Smith Archive has now been completed. For those interested in statistics there have been 148,181 pages viewed with an average view of 18 pages per session since launching the website in 2014 with interest from as far away as United States, Europe and China. For a small village in Suffolk that’s amazing! For the future - there are still more items to upload on the original site so keep popping back to look from time to time and please add your historical comments to the images. This will only enrich our historical knowledge of this amazing village, Stradbroke. SARA – Ann Readman Source: www.ancestry.co.uk, Commonwealth War Graves Commission. www.stradbrokearchive.org.uk

Stradbroke Neighbourhood Plan

A quick update for those who could not attend 2 recent Parish Council meetings when we presented our current work and introduced our consultant to everyone. We are now in the situation of waiting for the site assessments to be carried out by independent experts after obtaining a further grant to pay for their professional fees. This will ensure that the assessments are thorough, robust and impartial. Unfortunately, this has also caused some delay in our original timescale for the production of the plan. We shall be keeping you informed of the timed programme as this emerges with full details of who will be conducting the assessments and when - all of which will be found on the village website stradbrokeo nline. org. uk in the next few weeks. We are planning 2 more important Open Events and again we shall be issuing full details of these as soon as we can. Gillian Rennie-Dunkerley. (Chair of NP Committee)

The Stradbroke Trust

We have had several meetings this year. In January, the rent for the land, on which the Surgery stands, was increased from £50 per annum to £1,200 per annum. Obviously, this will have an impact on the amount of money available to spend on new projects, within Parishes served by the Stradbroke Surgery. There are still issues, with the Parish Council, but we genuinely hope these will be resolved shortly and an harmonious relationship will ensue. However, we are delighted to say, that new Self-Opening Automatic entrance doors will soon be installed, at a cost of £8,322. This will make access to our Surgery a lot easier. The Village Garden and Meadow is beginning to look spring-like and now that some Allotment holders have removed all the rabbit guards from the hundreds of trees – thank you – they can now grow stronger, without restraint. Unfortunately, there are still some irresponsible dog owners, who allow their dogs to foul the area. We respectfully request that they bag their dog poo and use the bin at the end of Shelton Hill, so that we all can enjoy looking around, instead of at the ground. However, if this dog fouling continues, we may have to prevent owners from walking their pets around the Allotments and Village Garden. This would be a shame, as we want everyone to be able to enjoy the area. Our proposal for a reduction in rent and tighter timescale for payment for the Allotments, has been declined this year, but we will always ‘keep the door open’ to these changes, should the Allotment holders so wish, in the future. Following our May meeting, we are very pleased to let you know that Mike Grigg has agreed to become a Trustee, for The Stradbroke Trust. His previous expertise will be an asset and we all look forward to him working alongside us. Jane Merritt Secretary for the Stradbroke Trust

Stradbroke Play Park Fundraising Group

As you may have seen the work on the play park improvements is now in full swing and is hoping to be completed within 3 weeks, once we have done the final touches and the picnic benches have arrived and been installed we will hold an official opening day to celebrate the completion of the project. I would like to say a big thank you to the demolition team volunteers, led by Don Darling, it has saved us money doing this part ourselves, so we are very grateful to all of you who have helped. On a slightly less positive note, the picnic table that was at Westhall, seems to have gone missing from the site, we are disappointed as we had planned to offer it to anyone in the village for a donation of £10 to the maintenance fund. We would be pleased if either an anonymous donation was left at the library or sent to the Parish Council Clerk (see PC minutes for contact info) alternatively if the bench was returned to the Westhall site, no questions would be asked and we would be thankful for its return. Matt Tanton-Brown headed our discussion evening with his usual expertise on all things to do with plants. He suggested that birch twigs made good and unobtrusive supports for many herbaceous plants and bamboo stems for larger ones. As a general rule spring flowering shrubs should be pruned in autumn, and autumn flowering ones in spring. Grassses can be cut quite hard and the dead teased out with a fork. If you need to lessen the work, grow larger and bolder shrubs, together with the use of mulching to keep down the weeds and preserve moisture. Helebores can have their old leaves cut down except “Niger” which should be left along until after flowering. We meet on 10th June to see “The gardens in summer” at the community centre car park at 9.45am to see the gardens viewed in January. C Treylan

Heveningham Hall Country Fair & Concours d’Elegance 2017

Following on from its hugely successful inaugural event last year as part of the Country Fair, Heveningham Hall in Suffolk once again plays host on 8th & 9th July to a Concours d’Elegance where some 50 of the most iconic cars that the automotive industry has ever produced are displayed against the backdrop of the Grade I listed Georgian mansion on dramatic grass terraces designed by renowned landscape architect Kim Wilkie. Along with Bonhams, the event will also be sponsored by renowned British watch company Bremont and Mercedes. In addition to the finest motor cars Heveningham Hall will also play host to an array of vintage aircraft for the first time. The aviation concours, which also runs over the weekend, celebrates exquisite engineering and detailing in all its forms. Entrants in both the aviation and motorsport concours compete for bronze trophies designed by renowned Suffolk-based sculptor Laurence Edwards. The event coincides with the annual country fair which itself attracts over 20,000 visitors who enjoy everything from aerobatic displays courtesy of the Blades to powerboat racing from Gordon Cook and his 2 Seater F1 powerboat, bungee jumps to stunt horses in the 5,000-acre Capability Brown landscape. Other attractions for 2017 include ‘The Ken Fox Wall of Death!’, High Lodge Clay Pigeon Shoot, a wide range of livestock and small animals and, of course, the Sheep Show. Visitors can also enjoy a wide range of tasty local produce at the many food stalls or shop for local homewares, gifts, arts & crafts and clothing plus a wide range of vehicle manufacturers will be displaying their latest models. In the main ring, other attractions include the Rockwood Dog Display Team, Waveney Harriers and the Sutherland Pipes and Drums not to mention the Tractor Parade, Suffolk Punches and Icarus Falconry. All proceeds raised from the country fair and both concours go to charity and over the years The Heveningham Hall Country Fair Trust, which organises the events, has raised over £600,000 for local charities. Though remaining tight-lipped about many of the exhibiting cars and aeroplanes, which are all now confirmed and were by invitation only, Heveningham Hall has released the details of a few motor cars including a 2017 Ferrari LaFerrari Aperta and a 2016 McLaren P1 GTR which will appear alongside a 1995 McLaren F1 GTR. Earlier models include a 1934 Alfa Romeo Tipo B-P3 and a 1951 Ferrari 212 Barchetta. RoughCast present Twelfth Night

Touring June 23rd – July 8th Inside and Out "Do I stand there? I never had a brother." Following their sellout tour of A Christmas Carol, RoughCast return to Shakespeare with a typically fast-moving and energetic production of the most delightful of his romantic comedies – Twelfth Night. With the action transposed to the world of the Spaghetti Western, it's the perfect entertainment for a hot and lazy summer evening. Shipwrecked twins, Viola and Sebastian, wash up on the shores of sleepy Illyria. Although distraught in the belief that her brother is lost in the shipwreck, the resourceful Viola dons man’s clothing and seeks employment with Duke Orsino, head man in Illyria. Things get complicated though, when Viola is sent to woo the beautiful Olivia on Duke’s behalf and Olivia inconveniently falls in love with Viola in his male disguise. To this we can add the drunken antics and practical jokes of Olivia’s uncle Toby and Olivia’s other hapless suitor Andrew Aguecheek, alongside their ongoing battle with the pompous and self-satisfied steward Malvolio (who also has his eye on the delightful Olivia.) Inevitably, to cap it all Viola’s twin arrives just in time to be mistaken for his sister to whom he bears an uncanny resemblance. Performances at many local venues – The Fisher, The Cut, Fressingfield, Brockdish, Diss, Wingfield, Hoxne, Beccles, Huntingfield and Rushall Further details visit www.roughcast.co.uk or tel 01379 586745 Pat Parris

Hospice’s big, bubbly event is back for 2017

After last year’s success, St Elizabeth Hospice is bringing back it’s highly popular family event, Bubble Rush, this August. Bubble Rush is a fun-filled, foamy 5k walk or run that will see people of all ages getting covered in colourful bubbles this summer in aid of the local charity. On Sunday 13 August, hundreds of people will run, walk, dance or skip around a 5km route at Christchurch Park. The route will feature four ‘bubble stations’ which each have different coloured bubble cannons, covering you in safe, frothy foam! Catherine Sheppard, St Elizabeth Hospice’s events and challenges fundraiser, said: “Last year was the hospice’s first ever Bubble Rush and the event was a huge success, with more than 1,500 local people taking part and getting covered in colourful bubbles all for a good cause! “Bubble Rush is an ideal event to take part in with your family, friends or co-workers as it’s fantastically frothy and fun for people of all ages – whether you’re six or sixty!” Registration is now open and this year there is the option to get the cost of registration back if you fundraise £100 or more St Elizabeth Hospice. All the money raised from St Elizabeth Hospice’s event will go towards improving life for people living with a progressive illness such as cancer, motor neurone disease and heart failure. To sign up to be part of the fantastic frothy fun, visit www.stelizabethhospice.org.uk/bubblerush or call 01473 723600. Sophie Johnson Marketing and Communications Officer

Sports Roundup

Stradbroke Cricket Club

The cricket season is finally under way, well, kind of. Three weeks into the season, & the Club has played one game. Chasing 195 against St. Margarets II, Matt Wise (86) & Michael Hugman (33), put on a record 123 for the first wicket, from which point we capitulated to 184 all out. But at least we played! The other two games were both wins, by concession, with our opponents unable to field a team. True they were both 2nd XI's, but if Kesgrave (population 14,000) or Woodbridge (pop 8,000), cannot find 22 players, what chance have Stradbroke (pop 1,500) got, finding 11? A simplistic view, but a comment on recreational cricket, which is why we are delighted to support the Parish Council initiative 'Stradbroke Sports Open Day' on Saturday 10th June. We hope to have an exhibition match between Primary Schools, giving a little perspective on the game of cricket, but we want to attract adults as well as children, so there will be a few games of skill to try. If we can sign up just one new adult, it will swell the club membership by 7%. Another meaningless statistic, but better than the 0% response we have had to last months 'Page 2' advert. Fine margins, but if adapted to the General Election swingometer, if it goes the wrong way, the Club could fold! Cricket has been played in Stradbroke for 274 years. With your help, we can celebrate 275. Michael Hugman

OK, so where have all the snails gone? Last year I was at war with the slugs and snails on my plot on the allotment. I tried throwing everything at them, broken egg shells , sharp stones, organic snail pellets (so as not to kill the birds). I even tried wool as they do not like to crawl over it. I got so angry with them, that I nearly ended up doing what my grandmother found great delight in and that was pouring salt over their shiny bodies to watch them bubble and curl. Many a time I would see her reach for the salt pot and go down the garden path to send some poor slimy creature to its fate. I decided that was far too cruel and felt that hedgehogs would be the answer, but they like rabbits could not get in through the fence. I gave up the fight and shared my produce with the survivors. I put my broad beans in that I had grown myself. The next day when I went up to water them, the rooks had had a field day and had pulled every single one up along the line and left me bean less. Now I am worrying about the drought. The ground is like concrete. No end of whacking it with a spade, jumping up and down on it, or even trying to do river dance on the hard bits will break it up. They tell you on the seed packets to rake to a fine tilt. Yeah! Right! It’s so hard it broke the rake. The rotivator just skims the surface, so someone told me at work to water it first then rotivate it. Umpteen buckets of water later with arms the length of spaghetti, the ground drinks , burps and gurgles and then it’s back to dry land again. Please, please , Mother nature, do you mind sending us a deluge of rain, preferably at night time, to quench the thirst and soften the dry solid soil and help my tiny seeds that must have dreadful headaches, by trying to head butt the clumps of solid rock. I know you keep threatening, but please just this once for snails sake. I expect by the time this goes to press. I will be moaning about the rain; the mud; the wind and Hail and yes you’ve guessed it, crows, slugs and blooming SNAILS . Bring on the rain! Mary Thompson

Kay Chris and their family wish to thank all those who shown such love and kindness to us through expressions of sympathy for Rachel . The food, cards , flowers, home visits , offers of help and the Church tribute have all given comfort at this most difficult time. We also want to express our empathy with those of you who both knew and love Rachel , of whom there are many, and to say that there is nothing anyone could have done. The cause of this was the chronic pain she experienced daily and which became insufferable to her. Rachel’s funeral will be on 17 June 2017 in Stradbroke Parish Church, and updates will follow on the Facebook Tribute page https://www.facebook.com/In-memory-of-Rachel-Edwards-655222004668668/ Kay and Chris Edwards th

News & Views Halesworth Community Nursing Care Fund

People from across north Suffolk and south Norfolk are being given the chance to take a virtual tour of a new £710,000 centre which will bring essential help closer to home for patients with life-limiting illnesses and their families. Work on the information and support centre (ISC), which will be built by Halesworth Community Nursing Care Fund (HCNCF), is due to begin later this year. Now people are being given the chance to enjoy a sneak preview of the building before construction has even begun by watching a short film put together by LSI Architects. The film is available at http://www.halesworthhealth.org/information-andsupport-centre/isc-building-plans It begins in the car park before moving into a light, airy atrium area, complete with comfortable seating and large glass doors leading onto the landscaped garden. Individual rooms where people can receive counselling, bereavement support, complementary therapies or help understanding a diagnosis are available on either side of the main space. Once building work is complete next year, the ISC will be open to anyone with cancer and other life-limiting illnesses who live within a 15-mile radius of Halesworth. Although HCNCF has met its £710,000 target to fund the construction, the charity is continuing to fundraise towards the £140,000 annual running costs of the ISC, which will be built on land next to Cutlers Hill Surgery in Halesworth. Anyone who would like to find out more about how they can help should visit www.halesworthhealth.org/information-and-support-centre Issued by Liz Hearnshaw at Zenith Public Relations on 01359 242581 or 07501 490308.
