Stradbroke gets ‘Back to Nature’ SAS have been thinking for some time how great it would be if Stradbroke could have its very own Nature Reserve, a place where children (and Mums and Dads of course) could get hands-on experience and learn about the natural world around us in their very own nature park. Well, this could now become a reality. We have been in discussion with a local farmer about the use of one of the small pieces of woodland near the village. The farmer has agreed that we can pursue this area, a 2 acre site situated close to the permissive footpath towards the south end of Neaves Lane. The site is in easy walking distance of the schools and would provide a wonderful educational facility for everyone in Stradbroke. The picture illustrates what the area might look like when completed. It includes a pathway through the area, a bridge to give people access, a small wetland area, a bird hide and feeding area and a deer hide. We will also aim to install bat and bird boxes, habitat piles and create an area where people can look for beetles and other mini-beasts We have already approached the heads of our two schools and both have received the idea enthusiastically. They are keen to work with us and will definitely make use of the Reserve when it is finished. However, to get the scheme off the ground we will need some additional help. We are looking for willing volunteers from within the village to help design, create and eventually manage the Reserve. So, if you are interested, we would really like to hear from you. Our aim is to start construction work in the Spring and have the Reserve open to visitors in time for the Summer, with all construction complete by the following year. The next step is to hold a public meeting for all interested parties – parents, children, farmers and anyone else who is interested in the project. If you think that you can help us make a success of this project – come to the meeting which will be held in the Community Centre at 7.00pm on Friday, 11th of March. If you can’t make the meeting, please get in touch, we guarantee that no offer of help will be turned down! Suffolk Family Carers We are an independent charity, our services are free! A Family Carer is defined as any age; ‘looking after’ a relative, friend, partner, parent/s or child/siblings who cannot manage without them because of illness, age or physical, learning or mental health difficulties. Many Family Carers, care for more than one person. The main concerns are when caring impacts on every part of the Family Carers’ life. It is then, especially, that support is needed which is more focused, planned, and often outside the home, with a complete break from the caring role. This we know sustains situations, otherwise there would be many more people cared for in residential homes, hospitals and other establishments. Please call our Helpline for more information; 01473 232679 or visit our website; www.suffolk-carers.co.uk

The Rectory Tel: 384363 Email: davidstreeter@suffolkonline.net Church Website: www.allsaints-stradbroke. com Dear Friends, Lent begins for us on Ash Wednesday, 9th March, at 10am with Holy Communion in the church, followed by Coffee and an Introduction to the Bible Study on five Thursdays at Jennifer Chetwynd’s house, The Old Byre, New Street, from 17th March, after a Service in her home at 10am. Please tell her, in advance, if you will be attending on those mornings so that all can be made ready. You are also invited to the Church, the day before, Shrove Tuesday, between 3.00 and 5.00 pm, for The Big Brew Tea Party to enjoy Fairtrade tea and coffee, drop scones and honey, and cakes, and to increase awareness of Fairtrade and to raise funds for Traidcraft to promote the work of beekeepers and honey producers in the developing world. A third of the food we eat is pollinated by bees, but the UK only produces 12% of the honey it requires – the rest is imported. Let us have a good and tasty time together, (the heating will be on!) and provide support for beekeepers in Africa and South America. Church Flower Arrangers are invited to The Rectory for a Coffee Morning at 10am on Wednesday 2nd March, to arrange our duties for twelve months, and to make plans for this year’s events and festivals. Easter Sunday is on April 24th, and on Saturday 30th, six days later, the Hermitage Ensemble, the Russian Singers who entertained us so well in April last year, will be in Stradbroke again for a Concert of sacred songs and folk music, performing in the Community Centre, as the church will be full of the Art Exhibition. Tickets are on sale at £10 each at the Post Office, or contact me to reserve your seat. Bishop Nigel will be in Wingfield Church to administer Confirmation at 6.30pm on Sunday, 10th April. Please tell me if you, or a member of your family, wish to be prepared for this Service, which is the normal means of admission to Holy Communion in the Church of England. I will be up early on Saturday, 5th March, to deliver cakes to the Stall in Church Street, and to collect our seed potatoes, to be grown until the Village Show on Saturday, 30th July. I hope many will be there too. With all good wishes, David Streeter. The All Saints Church Parochial Church Council Annual General Meeting will be held on Wednesday 20th April 2011 at 7.30 pm at the Community Centre. All welcome. Kara Pierce-Saunderson at the Feb 5th Library Day of Action Picture: Diss Express
Five members of the public attended the meeting: • Don Darling gave an update on the woodland area and the village games. The games will be held the weekend of 23/24th July. • Stephen Lee presented draft plans for Doggetts’ Farm House and Chantala. • Lawrie Hammond informed the Council about plans for an eco-centre at SBEC and changes to the Farmers’ Markets. Planning Results of planning applications considered by MSDC since the PC last met. The following had planning permission granted: 3659/10 erection of 2 x chicken sheds and feed bins: land adj Fennings Farm, Pixey Green 3335/10 erection of detached garage with store room over: 1 Stone Cottage, Laxfield Road The following had planning permission refused: 3302/10 erection of one and a half storey dwelling with attached single garage: The White Hart Other Matters: Stradbroke Library The future of the library was discussed and the change of funding arrangements was noted with considerable dismay. The Parish Council affirmed its support and desire to retain the library in Stradbroke. It was felt that working with other communities that are also under threat of losing their library would be beneficial. The council will complete the consultation document on behalf of the village. It was hoped that individual residents would also complete the questionnaire. Magazine Printing In the absence of Mike Readman, Colin Jones has kindly undertaken organising the printing of the village magazine and was thanked by the PC. Bloomfields Fair The Council agreed to host Bloomfield’s Fair on the playing field on 28th, 29th and 30th July 2011. Excessive Speed Mark Peacock reported that the speed of vehicles entering the village on the Laxfield Road was frequently excessive. The Council will request further action from the Police.

Life in the Legion Branch Chaplain Reverend David Streeter was the speaker at the February Monthly Meeting his subject being ‘War Poems’. I thanked him on behalf of the members present. I also thanked The Branch for sending me a ‘Welcome to your New Home Card’ as I have now moved to a bungalow in Diss. Branch Secretary Jeremy Higgins reported on the recent Suffolk County Conference. He had received the ‘Small Branch Runner up Efficiency Certificate’ at The Conference from The County President Air Vice-Marshall Rimmer. This was on display at the meeting. The Secretary also read out The Treasurers Statement. Member and Caseworker Joyce Cooper has agreed to carry The Branch Standard when Ian Bushnell moves away from the area. All Branch members will by now have received a letter concerning The Annual Branch Dinner on the 18th March. The Guest Speakers will be Dr Daniel Poulter MP, and Mr John Farmer who is the National Chairman of The RBL. Members please attend if you are able. Michael Burton – Branch Chairman.
Womens Institute You don’t have to travel far to lighten peoples spirits, and this was certainly the case for Mr Luke Heydon the gardening expert, who was our guest speaker at our February meeting. Once members and guests had been welcomed and the business of the evening completed, Luke proceeded to give us an insight into garden design, and how he goes from concept design to the finished garden. He illustrated this with a series of stunning screened photographs, which had members gasping with delight. Gardens large and small had been transformed into areas of sheer beauty by his use of natural planting. Wonderful drifts of colour, shapes and textures were seen on every photograph. Mrs.Toni Wisby in her vote of thanks expressed our delight in the evening and the inspiration he had given us to get out into our gardens as soon as the weather allows. Our competition winner this month was Mrs. Iris Badcock. A reminder for ‘Something Sweet’ please bring your contributions to our next meeting on Thursday 10th March at 7.30. p.m. in the Community Centre. Gill Bird. Press Officer.
Friends of All Saints Church Dancing shoes are back in the shoe bag! It’s now out into the garden to prepare for the Church Path Plant Sale on Saturday, 30th April. This date may be a bit early for bedding plants but we are relying on you to produce the plants to run a tip-top stall to raise funds for our Church Fabric . Don’t stop dancing, but keep gardening! On Saturday, 16th July we are delighted to tell you that Don and Carol Darling have invited us to their wonderful garden for another “Summer Lunch”. Those of you who were at, or can remember, the last such event we held a very successful “Auction of Promises” - with some fairly surprising items on offer! Can we please hear from you with the 2011 Promises - the greater the variety, the more fun will be had, and the more money we will rake in ! Please contact Carol Darling, who will be in charge of the auctioneer’s catalogue. Margaret Streeter (Press Officer)
Stradbroke Over 60’s Club We held our first meeting of 2011 on the 17th February, which was very well attended. We also had a new member the speaker was from Suffolk Link, telling us about the Organisation. We were offered advice on how we could air our views on the Adult Social Care and Health Services and other related topics in this area. We were asked what services we thought were good and what could be improved. After various discussions most members decided to join the scheme. We settled down to Scrabble, Dominoes, Cards or Chat, after which we had our Tea and biscuits followed by a Raffle and Auction. Our next meeting will be on the 3rd of March and the 17th in the Community Centre from 2pm till 4pm. New members are always made welcome come along and give us a try! Joan Grimes

1st Stradbroke Guides & 1st Fressingfield Brownies I would like to take this opportunity to say a BIG thank you to all of those that have been supporting our new Guide unit! Setting up any new venture is hard work, but the enthusiasm shown by the girls is so very worth it. We're still finding our feet and learning to be Guides as well as a unit, but having lots of fun and laughter on the way! * Thank you to Colin, our Lion, who has driven our fundraising efforts - creating opportunities for the Guides including fab hoodies with 'can't-missus' pink Guiding logo's on! The girls have been wearing them every week since the presentation and the whole unit extend thanks to the Southwold Sole Bay Lions Club. * Thank you to the Stradbroke Charitable Trust, who are supporting us by purchasing equipment that will provide new challenges and years of enjoyment to all Stradbroke Guides. Thank you to the Parish Council, who financially supported us through compulsory Guiding costs, it's donations such as these that allow us to pay the bills! A HUGE thank you must go to Georgina, my friend and support, who has worked hard alongside me to open the unit and given me the much needed back up required for such a busy 6 months! Georgina is about to pop, so is now on maternity leave from the Stradbroke Guides, but we all wish her, Amelie & Will love and luck!! This also means that I could do with an over 18, with most Thursday evenings free who would like to help me run the unit!??? If you can be 'down with the kids'!! Have a sense of humour and an open mind please email or call me! We look foward to getting involved in local projects, if you do have any ideas we'd love to hear from you. Candice Dudley - Unit Leader for the 1st Stradbroke Guides & 1st Fressingfield Brownies Stradbroke Guides – What we get up to! Our patrol is called the Twilights. We learn new games most weeks! We are looking forward to a film & popcorn night and the Royal Wedding Badge to celebrate Prince William marrying Kate Middleton!
Stradbroke Primary School Nord Pas de Calais 2011 Setting off from Ipswich on a miserable wet Wednesday lunchtime, little were we to know what an amazing experience we were embarking upon! Having had very little time to think the trip through we were on our way by coach and through the tunnel at what seemed like no time at all. The instant friendships and warm welcome we received in France were enough to dispel the awful weather which stayed with us throughout the trip. The experience outshone expectations by far and we all had many stories to share on our return trip to England. Through thick fog, pouring rain and strong winds, we travelled to Montrieul to meet our French counterparts - a surreal experience! Total strangers looking for each other across a crowded room, constant excited chatter in a mix of both languages, and then….. disappearing together across the countryside around Boulogne – all with the same aim – to build friendships, share ideas, make links and bring new experiences for the children in our schools. What we found out there, were children learning, some in a very different way to our own, but all excited and keen to find out more about us. We went into classrooms, read stories, played games, exchanged gifts and took hundreds of photos! We all had experiences of different lunches, some in school, some in homes and others in restaurants. Throughout the day, many of us spent time getting to know people, exploring places and understanding systems. Despite the very real differences in the ways our schools look and function, the links were forged. Only three weeks later and we were ready to greet and entertain our French partners, to give them a flavour of Suffolk and our own schools. We arrived in Ipswich to share a welcoming meal on their arrival, it was like meeting old friends! The hotel did us proud (with a setting ‘just like being on the Titanic’ my French friend told me!), we had a great time and then left them to catch up on their sleep. Thursday saw an early start, to make the most of the day. Tours of schools, interactions in lessons – speaking to the children, meeting staff and again snapping away with cameras was the main focus. In my experience, they were amazed at our wonderful buildings, bright and colourful displays and hands on lessons. Added to their day, we provided experiences of the Suffolk countryside, coast, culture and cuisine! Fish and Chips for some….school dinners for others……but all the time relationships were being built and ideas for partnership projects cemented. It was sad to say ‘au revoir ‘ at the end of the day, but we knew that it was only the start. They were, in some cases, taking back letters full of future friendship to their children from ours, ideas of projects to work on and the knowledge that this project has an important part to play in the lives of the children we teach. Do I recommend it? Whole – heartedly! I hope many more teachers will have such an amazing opportunity to bring a rich and valuable experience to the children in their schools. I know that mine are waiting each day for the post, to see if replies to their letters have arrived……..it is what real education is all about. Mrs Walsh – Deputy Head Teacher

Stradbroke Business & Enterprise College Local MP’s visit to Stradbroke Business & Enterprise College During a visit to Stradbroke Business & Enterprise College, Dr. Poulter told a class of Year 11 English pupils that youngsters are best-equipped to contribute to the ‘Big Society’. Suffolk MP Dr. Daniel Poulter also said that he wants local school children to get involved in more volunteer work. The 32 year old MP for Central Suffolk and North Ipswich was invited to a ‘Q&A’ session at Stradbroke Business & Enterprise College on Friday 11th February. The themes of the session were citizenship, how the political process works, and what youngsters can do for their communities. When questioned about Suffolk County Council cutting its concessionary bus pass for young people, he said “My view is that the county council should look at its back office functions when deciding where cuts should be made. We all know how important having a bus pass, and buses themselves, are to people in this part of the world, and they must be cheap to use.” A number of the pupils had concerns about other recent proposals or decisions taken by the county council, and Dr. Poulter reassured the class that he would do his best to support the retention of vital community services such as libraries. Another subject raised by the pupils was the installation of high speed broadband in rural areas. The Government recently announced that it will plough £830 million into reaching its goal of having the best broadband in Europe by 2015. But Dr Poulter wants Suffolk to get such technology before then. He told the class: “Getting high route broadband is at the top of my agenda – we need the right road, rail, and broadband services to help get businesses started, and maintain the high standard of education in this area.” Sandra Vincent

Wingfield and District Gardening Club The Wingfield and District Gardening Club has been in existence for over a year and a half now. You may have seen our posters around Stradbroke, and, indeed, a number of Stradbroke residents are now members, and several of our previous visiting speakers were Stradbroke-based. Our late January meeting was the annual ‘Gardens at their Worst’. We visited four members’ gardens in the depths of winter - gardens as far apart as Syleham and Laxfield (with hot soup much appreciated at the last venue). We see the same gardens in May ‘at their Best’. On 24th February, at our usual evening meeting place, Wingfield Barns Arts Centre, there will be a talk entitled ‘What’s in a Name?’ followed by a Seed Swap, where members bring along left-over seeds, or collected seeds. Future meetings include talks by visiting speakers: The art of Topiary Work; the Restoration of Christchurch Park in Ipswich; the Technique of Chip Budding. Also there will be a visit to Buxlow Manor at Knodishall, to see the house and garden. We welcome members from all the villages in this area, and we already have a good crosssection of the gardening fraternity, i.e. highly experienced/absolute beginners, huge gardens/backyards. The only requirement is that you love your garden. Membership is just £15 for single, or £25 for joint. Interested? ‘Phone Graham Redelsperger on 01379 384259 'The Art of Topiary', 24th March a talk by Steve Manning, 7.30 at Wingfield Barns Arts Centre, Studio 4. Graham Redelsperger

Stradbroke “Festiful of Fun” Horham has its Bygones rally, Heveningham has its show, Fressingfield has its Music Festival and now.... Stradbroke will have its very own Festiful a weekend of entertainment, fun and games for all the family on July 23rd/24th 2011! On Saturday 23rd we will be repeating last year’s very successful Pet Show, with even more classes for children and adults to enter. For example the ugliest soft toy, “antique” pets and toys. Yes toys are like pets to some mums and dads. There will also be a Car Boot sale, for those eager to hunt for a bargain, or who just want to empty their garage! In the evening we hope to have a bit of “family culture” the details of which are still in discussion and open to suggestion. Also, during the day there will be a 5-a-side young person’s soccer tournament, as a pre- event of the Intervillage games On Sunday 24th we have the finale of the Intervillage Games (IVG) which Stradbroke is hosting this year. If you’ve not been recently, it really is a barrel of laughs. We have applied for a grant from “Suffolk Open Weekend” which sponsors family sporting events in advance of the Olympic Games starting on the same date 12months hence. With this grant, if successful, we aim to make it a special IVG with an “Olympic Flavour” and with some unusual events for example, human hoopla with Olympic rings. Throughout the weekend there will be a variety of side shows and stalls, for children and families to enjoy. Clubs and societies will be able to advertise their organisations and provide entertainment, just as at the Stradbroke fete in previous years. With a bar, BBQ or Hog roast, cakes & teas, Punch & Judy, Brass band and much, much more, we intend to create an event to remember. We already have a small group of enthusiastic helpers but, as you can imagine, there really is a lot to do between now and then. This is an opportunity for us all to come together as a community and celebrate everything that’s good about Stradbroke. So, if you fancy helping in any way whatsoever, or you have ideas that might add to the occasion, then please get in touch either by phone, email or personally. Everyone will be most welcome; the more the merrier as they say. Watch this space for more information as the months go by and don’t forget, July 23rd/24th make it a date! Information Needed About Toad Crossings The Suffolk Amphibian and Reptile Group (SARG) would be very pleased to hear from anyone who knows about a toad crossing that is not currently included on the Suffolk Toad Crossing Register held by Suffolk County Council. Most registered crossings will have signs erected by the County Council annually from about 1 March until roughly 30 April, although some crossings may have signs made by local residents. If you know of a crossing and are in doubt about whether it is registered or not, then please contact Sue Morgan, a member of SARG, on suemorgan06@hotmail.com or you can write to her at 1 Red House Farm Cottage, Pixey Green, Stradbroke, Eye, IP21 5NJ. In addition, Rosie Norton, the Suffolk Naturalist’s Society’s County Recorder for Amphibians and Reptiles, welcomes all sightings of frogs, toads, smooth newts, great crested newts, slow worms, adders, common lizards and grass snakes. She can be contacted on rosie@brundish.demon.co.uk, or write to her at 3 Wood View, Sibton, Saxmundham, IP17 2NH. Please take care if you see any frogs or toads crossing the road to or from their breeding ponds in the spring, especially on a wet warmish evening. Reptiles also get killed on roads, particularly grass snakes, at various times of the year, but most often in the spring, summer and early autumn months. The members of SARG thank you for your help on behalf of Suffolk’s Amphibians and Reptiles. Rosie Norton

Sports News Stradbroke Swimming Pool THE WORLD’S BIGGEST FUNDRAISING SWIM
Date: 9Th April Time: 2-5pm Swimmers in Stradbroke will make a splash for charity during the 8-10th April as they complete the Swimathon 2011 challenge at Stradbroke Swimming Pool helping to raise money for Marie Curie Cancer Care and the Swimathon Foundation. Stradbroke Pool is one of over 580 pools taking part nationwide in Swimathon 2011. The world’s biggest fundraising swim is the perfect way to start the New Year on a healthy note. Swimming is proven to be a great form of exercise whatever your ability, relaxing for mind and body, and helps to build endurance, muscle strength and cardio-vascular fitness. By registering for Swimathon before 31 January 2011, swimmers will have longer to train for their 1.5k, 2.5k or 5k challenge and they will also enjoy half price entry. TV presenter and keen swimmer Gail Porter and Olympic gold medallist Duncan Goodhew announced this week that Swimathon 2011 entries for were now open. Between 8-10 April 2011 22,000 swimmers will raise more than £2 million for Marie Curie Cancer Care and the Swimathon Foundation. Funds will help support Marie Curie Nurses who provide free nursing care to people with terminal cancer and other terminal illnesses, in the place of their choice. Stuart Murdy says: “Swimathon is fantastic as it brings our community together as they raise money for charity, and provides them with a great challenge.” Gail Porter said: “Launching Swimathon this year gives me huge pleasure. The challenge is ideal motivation for everyone to pull on their swimsuits, get in the pool and enjoy a much-needed New Year health boost. I find swimming a great way to keep fit, especially as it’s an activity I enjoy with my child. Going down to your local pool and getting them used to being in the water is just the start of the fun. Once my daughter was up and paddling, there was no stopping us! “What’s more - the money raised will help Marie Curie Cancer Care to provide free nursing care to terminally ill people. I know what a difference this care can make as both my mum and my grandmother died from cancer and received care at home from a Marie Curie Nurse. Caring for a loved one at the end of their life is never going to be an easy time for families but it was made much more bearable for us by the skill and care of these amazing nurses.” Duncan adds: “As we approach a quarter of a century of Swimathons, I’m delighted to report that last year’s event enjoyed an astonishing 38 per cent rise in swimmers, and what’s really exciting is that around 2,500 of those who dived in told us that they only started swimming again because they entered the event. From these grass roots right up to our overflowing international trophy cabinet, it seems that Britain’s love affair with swimming really is back to stay.” Individual and team entries to Swimathon 2011 are open until 6 April 2011. To enter go online to www.swimathon.org or call 0845 36 700 36. For more information Stephanie Cruickshank 01379384376 stephaniecruickshank@slm-ltd.co.uk

Stradbroke Cricket Club Firstly, it didn’t quite make the Guinness Book of Records, but the 115 Cricket Club Members, families & friends who attended the recent Horse Race Evening is indeed a record in it’s 11 year history. More people means more money raised, so we are really pleased to announce that the event not only raised £1100 for club, but also £300 for the James Grigg Youth Cricket Trust, thanks to the generosity of those who bid for horses in the auction race. There are too many people to thank personally, but mention must be made for the Fish & Chip van. Somehow they produced 115 portions in one go, helping to make it the best Race Night ever. We cannot rest on our laurels, the next fund raising event is the Pop Music Quiz at the Community Centre on Saturday 16th April. Details in next months edition, along with details about the Car Boot Sale on May 2nd. Spring is just around the corner which means that pre-season nets are starting. Gardeners Notes Last month I started with ideas on how to go about designing your garden. This month I will give you a few ideas on how to make the space work and link existing features with new ideas. In my previous article I explained that you have to deal with the practical requirements of a garden first and that will determine how your space works. There are various things to think about, if you have a small space don't be afraid to fit a lot of things into the area, boundaries can be obscured with large plants and borrow views of large plants or trees from your neighbours garden giving the impression they are in yours. Views of countryside or a fine building are often found around here, don't be afraid to condense the view as it is much more appreciated when your eye is drawn to the view beyond rather than a wide open space. The phrase 'focal point' is a bit of a clichĂŠ these days, along with water features and decking. Don't be put off using these things if the situation is right. A focal point may be a bird table placed outside the kitchen window where you can enjoy watching the birds feed as you do the washing up, or it could be a fine statue at the end of an avenue of trees. I try to use benches or seating areas as focal points so it means they are dual purpose. Focal points also can be used to draw people around your garden. A light coloured shrub against dark foliage may be enough to make someone take a closer look. Paths can also be used with focal points. This is a good way to make a practical requirement a bit more interesting, it may be a path that is required to get down the garden or to a shed, consider using planting or something similar to draw the eye as you go along the path. Stepping stones set in the grass make a nice understated path, especially when the path is only used occasionally. When you are looking at changing things in your garden, or creating a new garden, you have to think about the space, not just on the ground but also at height. Trees and shrubs take a while to grow but pergolas, arches, fences and trellis all give a garden instant height. They can be used to break up the garden so it makes it more interesting. Practically, these things can also be used to act as a wind break or screen from neighbours etc. Water features are good and can be a small bowl with a solar pump to a large lake with a rowing boat. The sound of moving water is very comforting and can be used to soften the noise of a busy road nearby. I have found with water features it is best to keep it as understated as possible otherwise they will dominate. Seating areas are very important. Most people want to sit in the sun but it is also worth considering seating areas in the shade for the odd occasion it gets too hot! Your main patio area should be as near to a room like a sitting room or kitchen as possible. The size of the terrace needs to be large enough to accommodate a table and chairs and still be able to move around comfortably. Sitting in the sun is important but in most situations one place will not be sufficient. It may be that your main seating area is good for the middle of the day but you need two different places, one for breakfast and one for the end of the day. These may only be a south east facing chair and south west facing bench. This way you will be encouraged out into the garden more often. These are just a few basic elements to think about when designing or changing your garden. Next month I will deal with shapes and planting. Things to be getting on with in the garden. Everything is building up to get going now and it is a good time to tidy the edges of the borders before the grass starts growing properly. Anywhere where the grass has died off from plants that spilled over last year can be re-seeded or, better still, if you have an area elsewhere that you can cut out the turf you can remove a square and swap it over. It sounds a bit over-the-top but re- cutting the edge now will make it easier to maintain throughout the summer. It is now the perfect time to prune roses, rake up any dead leaves from around the base that may be harbouring disease and give them a good feed and mulch. Blood, fish and bone is good with a top dressing of well rotted compost or manure. Before the plants grow up too much clear out the compost heap and spread it on beds and under hedges. Hedges often get forgotten but need feeding as much as anything. A good mulch at the base of trees, particularly young ones, will help establish a good root system. When I was clearing out a compost heap in February I came across three baby grass snakes, about 6 - 8 inches long. I made sure I put them back under a pile of compost elsewhere to keep them warm until the temperature picks up.Make the most of any dry days we have in the garden as it won't be long now before spring and summer are here. Happy gardening. Luke
