Running for Stradbroke – A day to remember! Don Darling recounts the big day in London, raising money for the Stradbroke Charitable Trust “Getting to the start was an event in itself. All runners have a free pass on London Transport so you’d think it would be easy. Tube to Charing X, main line to Greenwich, walk to the start! By the time I got to Baker Street the tube was full of large red bags – no it wasn’t recycling day, these were runners with their official Virgin entrance bags to put belongings in before the race. By the time we hit Charing X it was much worse - the thought of being a sardine now was positively pleasurable. We regurgitated from the train and walked to Greenwich park to get ready for ‘the off’. 50,000 of us, including large oversize teddy-bears, human bee-ings, robots and other assorted characters, mingled behind the starting line, all 300 yards of it, waiting for the Klaxon to go. As we crossed the starting line there was the usual rush, not forwards as you might think, but sideways into the bushes. The nervous energy was just too much for some! The tour round Greenwich was actually pleasant with thousands of heads bobbing up and down in unison to the multicultural musical entertainment - Jamaican Kettle drums, Brass Bands, Jazz sessions and giant Indian Drums beating their hypnotic rhythms. Suddenly I felt water being thrown at me from behind. I turned round in surprise, certainly not expecting to see a priest sprinkling holy water over the passing runners and giving them his blessing! This, for me, summed up the day. Carol and team had planned their strategy for meeting me on route. Elli & Tori came from Stradbroke, Adeline from Cambridge, whilst Carol was in St John’s Wood. The plan was to meet at the Cutty Sark in Greenwich to see me at the 7m marker – I think there was a better chance of me winning the lottery and I didn’t even have a ticket. Well they met up all right which was surprising in itself, and I was there on schedule, but they hadn’t planned for the fact that they couldn’t cross the road, and 10,000 spectators and 500 runners were in the way! By the time we reached the docks the elite runners were coming back into the home straight. We waved as they passed! With another 15 miles still to go, it was demoralising to see them virtually sprinting while us plebs could only manage little more than a hobble! The crowd now became more important. Among them the thousands of children with pride of place at the front – it was great to see them put their hands out and even better to see their faces as they “high-fived” with the contestants. Carol and the team made 2 more appearance at 18m and 23m. Despite the roar of the crowd and Pink Floyd blaring on my IPod, I heard unmistakeable sounds from a far corner of the crowd shouting “Dad! Dad! – as if I was the only one there! But, there they were, waving and screaming their support, I couldn’t have done it without them. The last leg along the embankment and up the Mall was tough. Limbs had become like puppet’s legs, with a will of their own - and very wooden! Muscles ached, and my mind started playing tricks with me – “go on just walk a while, others have given up”. But the crowds were fantastic, willing us on, even though the only screams I could hear were from my legs. The great thing about supporters is that they give their encouragement to everyone, whether they know them or not. They must be the main reason that so many manage to finish. The last 800 yds down the Mall takes forever, but you know it’s all over now and can look forward to that welcoming beer you’ve promised yourself. In hindsight an amazing experience.... but not one to be repeated! Thank you to all those readers who have sponsored my efforts. The current tally is over £800 with more still coming in. Monies raised will be given to the Stradbroke Charitable Trust for the benefit of the youth of the village. If you forgot to sponsor me but would still like to, just give me a call or drop it into the Spar Shop” Don Darling

Prayer + Football Stars The collapse and cardiac arrest of Bolton Wanderers footballer Fabrice Muamba on the pitch in March prompted widespread mainstream prayer campaigns and high – profile media coverage of faith. His collapse on the field during a match against Tottenham Hotspur stopped the match. The faces of players and fans were grave as his heart stopped beating and experts rushed to the scene. In intensive care he was said to be fighting for his life. He has since made a good recovery, which has been described as miraculous. God and prayer hit the headlines as Muamba’s fiancée Shauna Magunda repeatedly tweeted praises to God about his recovery. Metro’s headline on March 20 was ‘Your prayers are working’, while The Sun’s front page declared, ‘God is in control’ on March 19 – both quoting Mahunda. Twitter trended #Pray for Muamba. High profile players such as Wayne Rooney and Rio Ferdinand said they were praying. Bolton’s manager Owen Coyle, a devout Catholic, also urged people to pray. Spurs striker Emmanuel Adebayor told the Daily Telegraph, ‘We are happy the medics from Bolton and Tottenham did a great job – and we have to thank the almighty God as well’. Muamba is understood to be a committed Christian himself. Shauna tweeted him following the tragedy, ‘Loving u is easy cuz ur the most God fearing man I know. U inspire me with ur strength. People ur prayers are healing my soulmate.’ Christianity Magazine May 2012 PRAYER CHANGES PEOPLE & EVENTS th

Dear Friends, The Confirmation Service on Sunday, 25th March, was splendid. The Bishop and those who came for other parishes were delighted with their welcome and all that we provided for them. May from Wednesday 2nd, 7.00 – 9.00 pm, & Thursday 3rd – Monday 7th, 10.00 am – 6.00 pm, sees the Church full of pictures, the work of artists who will demonstrate their skills for us to see and enjoy and, if we really like one or more, to buy and take home & look at every day. There are special days in the Church calendar, Easter Sunday (it was lovely to see all the flowers), and Ascension Day, when Jesus goes up to heaven, from where he can hear all our prayers, as he sits beside God, our Heavenly Father, who knows each one of us by name. A very special day was the 6th of February, 60 years since the Queen came to the throne, but it is in June that we celebrate the Diamond Jubilee, and we invite you to give thanks for sixty royal years at All Saints Church on Sunday, 3rd June, at a Service at 11.00 am, followed by The Big Lunch in the church and the churchyard. Bring your own food and drink, and enjoy each other’s company on this very happy occasion for Stradbroke’s Jubilee Celebration. The music-makers of Stradbroke Brass, & our own players on trumpet & organ, will all be joyful together to lead us in song and in praise for sixty glorious years. More information and my requests to many of you to help decorate the Church will come around the village this month; do look out for them, & say YES! Please, as well as being there. The Queen will be on paintings in the Art Exhibition; you also have an amazing opportunity to take part in re-creating a famous picture of Her Majesty, in fact a photograph by Karsh of the Princess Elizabeth taken in 1951, at Wingfield Barns on Saturday & Sunday, 19th & 20th May, with Tina McCallan who came in 2009 to recreate a Harvest painting by Archimboldo. Do come to Wingfield at any time between 10 am and 5 pm on those days. Let me know first. With all good wishes, David Streeter. All Saints Church Cleaning - please go in, when you can, after the Art Exhibition. Margaret Streeter

Parish Council Meeting

10 April 2012

During the Public Forum concerns were raised should an application submitted by Havensfield Farm be granted planning permission by MSDC. As well as the visual impact the proposal would have on surrounding land the close proximity of the buildings to a water course which is a tributary of the River Waveney and the impact any failure of the slurry system would have on that water course was a significant area of disquiet.

NEXT PARISH COUNCIL MEETING: 14th May 2012 7.30pm At the

Community Centre Planning: Applications considered: 0859/12 temporary use of land for siting of 1 x mobile home for a period of 3 years to accommodate an agricultural worker Mulberry Lodge, Laxfield Road Approval was recommended unanimously. It was suggested, and agreed, that the response to MSDC should note the presumption that the Planning Officer had satisfied himself as to the future viability of the business if approval were to be granted. 0141/12 erection of two storey rear extension with single storey link extension to existing single storey structure and part removal of outbuilding and erection of store and three bay cart lodge Tots Cottage, Neaves Lane MP proposed recommending approval; OL seconded and approval was recommended by a majority vote (9 for the proposal and two abstentions) 0793/12 erection of proposed pig building and associated hard standing Havensfield Farm, Fressingfield Road Refusal was recommended unanimously

(Re-submission of withdrawn application 3761/11) Land to the rear of, 3-4 Westhall 0545/12 creation of new vehicular access following stop up of existing access and alteration of driveway. Erection of detached pitched roof single storey storage outbuilding. Erection of lean-to greenhouse. Erection of pitched roof addition to side of existing outbuilding. Erection of 5 bar gates. Barley Brigg Farm, Laxfield Road. This went to committee on 28 Mar 12 and a decision had been deferred. Other business: The entrance way to the new allotments is now ready. Before a car parking area is established planning permission must be sought. This is underway. Work is ongoing to establish the library under the new regime. This will take a great deal of time but be assured that the Working Party is keeping well on top of things on your behalf. NEWS ITEMS Note: At present Stradbroke is not subject to a hosepipe ban but this could easily change. We should all get used to conserving water before it is thrust upon us. The WI is organising a ‘Litter Pick’ to take place on 14th May 2012. Dorothy Readman (on 388499) has details. The 2012 Annual Parish Meeting will take place on Thursday 17 May 2012 at 7.30pm. All organisations in the village are welcome to submit a report. If you wish your organisation to be represented please advise the Clerk and if you wish to submit a report but no one is able to attend to present it, again, contact the Clerk who will arrange for it to be read out on the night. Life in the Legion Clive Baxter from Hoxne was the guest speaker at the April Meeting. He spoke about the life of his late father ‘Reggie’, a well known and respected local press reporter, who had started work at The Diss Express in 1934. His father was devoted to The Royal British Legion and had been awarded a National Certificate of Appreciation for his outstanding work. He died in 1999. I gave The Vote of Thanks on behalf of the members present. In the tribute at the start I mentioned the recent death of Evelyn Neale. Jeremy Higgins read out the Treasurers Report and dealt with the correspondence. The Annual Branch Dinner was a success with 60 members and guests attending as also was the Wattisham Air Base Visit. I thanked Jeremy Higgins for organising these events. After the meeting Officers and members attended Evelyn Neale’s funeral at St Mary’s Church, Homersfield. Both Evelyn and her late husband Graham, who died last year, will be very much missed by us all, and we send our sincere sympathy to their family. The next Branch Meeting is on Thursday 3rd May at The King’s Head Laxfield and a guest speaker is being arranged. On the day before on the 2nd May the local H Group (Suffolk County) will meet at Brome Community Centre to be hosted by the Hoxne Branch starting at 7.45 pm. If you are able members please attend these meetings. This year’s Coffee Morning will be held at The Rectory Stradbroke on July 7th. Further details will follow in the next magazine. Michael Burton – Branch Chairman.

W.I We started our meeting by welcoming Jean Morgan, visiting us for the first time. We hope you enjoyed being with us Jean. After a very busy business section Carol Darling read a report from Federation up dating members on their campaign for the ‘Welfare of Bees’. Joyce Lee was delighted to report that our quiz team of Betty, Jennifer Joyce, and Rose came first in the Wilby Quiz, and that the team of Jennifer, Joyce June and Rose were 8th in the County Casual Quiz. Great news! Dorothy then gave us more good news, when she announced that Betty and her husband Dougie were celebrating their Golden Wedding in two days’ time, and on behalf of us all she presented Betty with a card and a beautiful basket of golden and cream flowers. It was then time to welcome our guest speakers Claire and James Hargrave for the evening, their topic IT and Social Networking. Loved by many and feared by many more. In their lively delivery and with the use of many aids they took us from the start of the ‘Web’ right through to ‘Twitter’ and not a bird in sight! It certainly gave us an insight as to what the future holds, and how our lives could change. Vicki gave the vote of thanks on our behalf. The ‘Cake Stall’ was well supported with a great array of lovely cakes for sale. The proceeds of which will help our funds. Thank-you all. Guess the weight of the cake was won by Betty. It certainly was her night. DON’T FORGET THE COFFEE MORNING AT CAROL DARLING’S ON WEDNESDAY 2nd MAY AT 10.30am. BEING HELD TO HELP FUND THE ENTRIES FOR THE SUFFOLK SHOW. Our next meeting in May is one to look forward too, as we are being entertained by our very own ‘Circle Dancing Group.’ Gill Bird

Stradbroke Primary School visit us at www.stradbrokevc.suffolk.sch.uk As the Summer term begins we are delighted with the changes which we have Our new Li made in our school library. We would like to thank brary Mura l! Mr. Mallinson for creating our beautiful new mural on the main wall. New fitted shelves are being installed this week and the library was re-painted before Easter. We have hundreds of pounds worth of new library books waiting to restock our new shelves and the children are able to use our child friendly computerised system Junior Librarian to manage their accounts! It looks fantastic and we are thrilled with our new library. Summer Term is always a busy one as our Year 6 pupils prepare for their SATs exams. We are going to be having a special event to end this half term by celebrating the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee with a red, white and blue themed day, talent show and special Jubilee Fair for pupils run by our Friends of Stradbroke School (FOSPs). Another busy and exciting half term! Mrs. Melanie Barrow, Headteacher Stradbroke Primary

Stradbroke High School - An 11-16 Academy Meeting the Government Four Year 10 pupils, Steven Barton, Courtney Edwards, Jacob Cleverley and Rosie Curtis, had the opportunity to see first-hand the workings of the Civil Service during a visit to the Suffolk Chamber of Commerce offices in Ipswich . Four government employees came up from the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) in London to meet with an invited group representing ‘Micro’ businesses in Suffolk in order to help write a government strategy to encourage very small businesses to take on more employees. The school was also contacted to have a representation from 15 year-olds - the most likely group to be affected. We were surprised to find that apart from the five of us, there were only two other people attending. The main focus of the meeting was to discuss how a website should be structured to help potential employers through the mire of red tape. The draft website was pulled apart by the whole group with our pupils suggesting many improvements. In addition many comments came down to “Don’t create a website to help people get through the bureaucracy – reduce it instead.” Steven Barton suggested putting a Forum on and all of our team talked about using You Tube and Twitter to improve communication. The civil servants wrote everything down. The BIS people were genuinely impressed with the comments and the feedback and have said that they would like to continue having a dialogue with us and probably ask to ‘road test’ the next version through us. Mr L Hammond. Business Liaison

Stradbroke Library Launch of Richard Pierce’s Dead Men on 23rd March 2012 Despite the madness of the Natural History Museum launch, where they had to turn people away, despite the buzz of doing radio and a book signing in Doncaster, despite all these things that I could have predicted, but didn’t, it was important to me to do an event in Stradbroke Library, not just to thank all those people who supported me while I was writing Dead Men, but also in an attempt to bring to national attention the issue of library closures, because, although the library group here in Stradbroke is doing great work, the fact remains that libraries, nationally, are still under threat from government cuts. Sixty-odd people turned out for what turned out to be a solo performance from Jack Stevens, the only part of Cathedrals & Cars that could turn out, in the end, and who put wonderful Antarctic interpretations on the three songs he performed, performances which fitted in so well with the tenor of the book that I was embarrassed and disomfited, almost, to follow him with my weedy readings from the book. Thanks to St Peter’s Brewery, we had plenty of beer to go round, and Diss Publishing were very pleased to sell almost fifty copies of Dead Men, which is available in Kindle and paperback forms. It was wonderful to see the library so full, to see the Court House at its full potential (and its acoustic properties much better than expected). If the dice fall the right way, we will see more such events at this venue, bringing much-needed life-blood to the library and the village. Thanks to everyone for your support, especially Maureen John and Marianne Pierce-Saunderson. Please keep supporting the library in it fight against closure. Please keep supporting the village we have chosen to be our home. Your support is vital. Richard Pierce-Saunderson (writing as Richard Pierce)

Wingfield and District Gardening Club Members of Wingfield and District Gardening Club and visitors were given an excellent talk by Edward Martin, a member of the Suffolk Archaeological Team, with many illustrations of the Lost Gardens of Suffolk, from Medieval Times to the Present Day. He began by describing a garden in the mid 1300s, the foundation of many early gardens. The moat often surrounded the garden in larger properties together with dovecotes. These were succeeded in later years by a canal, follies and grottoes. To a certain extent, these were to show ones status and wealth. There were many examples of early plans and ariel photographs plainly showing the remnants of the original designs including the provision of long vistas. A fascinating evening. Date for your diary: 31 May “Dry Gardening”, a talk by Matt Tanton Brown at 7.30pm at the De La Pole Arms, Wingfield. For further information contact Caroline on 01379 384674 . st

Harleston Flower Club Dulcie Lofting inspired members and visitors with her modern and traditional arrangements interpreting "Simplicity". Her friendly and informative dialogue interspersed with amusing stories, mostly centred round her experiences of gathering foliage for arrangements for various occasions, entertained in an exemplary manner and the afternoon sped by all too quickly. The "Have a Go" meeting on 5th April gave members the opportunity for a friendly, chatty afternoon combined with the intricacies of how and where to fold and stick card and paper to make a box. Numerous lovely bits and bobs were available to choose from for decoration and at the end of the session there was an amazing array of very varied, individual and pretty examples. Thursday May 3rd at 2pm brings Mrs. Jacquie Aldous demonstrating her designs and interpretation of "That's Entertainment". If you're free, please come along to Wortwell Community Centre for a relaxing and enjoyable afternoon with tea and biscuits. We do keep a Sales Table offering floral equipment and accessories and a "Grab a Bargain" table where a host of items donated by members for sale towards Club funds may find books, vases, toiletries, plants, etc., etc. Thursday June 7th will be Mrs. Adele Kent demonstrating "Take an old bag shopping". Adele is great fun and this is sure to be an amusing way to pass an afternoon. For more information about the Club please ring Jenni Baker 01986 782377.

Forthcoming Events

Stradbroke Cinema On Friday, 25th May, 7.00 for 7.30 pm, we are showing “The War Horse” The Bar will be open - and ice creams in the interval. Entrance £5.50. It is a 2011epic war film, an adaptation of a 1982 children's novel set before and during World War I, by British author Michael Morpurgo. Young Albert enlists to serve in the War after his beloved horse is sold to the cavalry. Albert's hopeful journey takes him out of England and across Europe as the war rages on. Director: Steven Spielberg, Writers: Lee Hall and Richard Curtis (screenplay), Stars: Jeremy Irvine, Emily Watson and David Thewlis. This is a touching film that could well become this generation’s "Black Beauty”. N.B. Regrettably, through no fault of our own, or the organisation that supply us with the films, we are unable to show “The Artist” on Saturday, 12th May. The distributor has changed the release date several times already and we are unsure about its latest announced date. The Autumn Season starts in September, on the 4th Thursday of each month, and we will endeavour to show “The Artist” later in the year. Margaret Streeter

Date for your diary: 31st May “Dry Gardening”, a talk by Matt Tanton Brown at 7.30pm at the De La Pole Arms, Wingfield. For further information contact Caroline on 01379 384674

Fair Trade News Shop inside Eye Parish Church opens Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Fridays 11am – 1pm. At the Church Shop we have had a makeover, changing the layout and décor as much as we can given the nature of the constraints of the space – and we certainly refreshed our lovely shop. We also decided to try something different, and hold a Book Fair in celebration of World Book Day at the beginning of March, which was a storming success – raising £365 for Church funds and £80 for Self Help Africa. It was so successful, that we shall be holding another book fair during Open Gardens Weekend in Eye (9th & 10th June) – this time in the Vicarage Garden. At the Book Fair we served Cafetiere coffee and went for a bit of café culture, the proceeds of which were the funds raised for Self Help Africa – so we thought we’d continue this good work by hosting a coffee morning on every Friday opening from now onwards, again raising funds for the nominated Church charity of the month. Please feel free to drop in and support this initiative! Of course, the biggest motivation there is for all of this effort, is the outcome in terms of donations that we have been able to make to four smaller scale international development charities. Each of these charities has received £562 from funds raised via the Fairtrade sales activity. Traidcraft Exchange are the charitable arm of Traidcraft plc, the fairtrade company, and they will be using the funds to support and identify further potential fairtrade partners. Kerala Crafts are a small charitable organisation working with a group of Nuns in India who operate a factory that makes handwoven baskets (which we sell in the shop) – the funds sent will help them provide water tanks for the weavers so that the raw materials can be kept supple. CHIPS (Christian International Peace Service) has a project in Ghana headed up by our local friend Paul Rose, working on conflict resolution between tribes & looking at ways to improve opportunities for people. Finally, we have also donated to Mercy In Action, a charity working with families in the Philippines. Our money there will be used to purchase cooking facilities and several passenger carrying tricycles – all of which will be used to start microbusinesses and improve incomes for families that the charity supports. Our donations are only made possible when you visit the Church Shop and purchase goods from us, or if you see me at your local fair or market, or if you contact me for baskets of goods to sell at your Church or Social group. So please help us to stay motivated and come and see us, and the revamped Church Shop very soon! Contact: Sue Watson 01379 384558.

Stradbroke Cricket Club ‘My copy of Wisden plopped through my letterbox the other day. Actually it was more of a thud! It is then I know the cricket season is upon us. Like a Spring lamb I rush outside, only to find it is wet, cold, & windy. At the time of going to press our first two matches, plus the first junior coaching session have been lost to the weather. The only saving grace is that the opponents of the A Team conceded the day before, giving us maximum points. If the weather does not relent, & the league is decided on the Vera Duckworth, Lewis method, it may prove crucial. Lets hope not. Another disappointment was the fact that the local Supermarkets do not stock fatted calf, because our prodigal son, Adam Van Der Looy has returned from New Zealand for the Summer. His amiable demeanor has meant that he has fitted right in, and it is a boost to the Club at a time when more people are leaving us than joining. Yet, Stradbroke Cricket Club must be doing something right. The Queens Head Inn are kindly sponsoring us in 2012, and Nat West continue to invest in us through their Cricket Force initiative. I know we need the rain, but we also need the sunshine. The game of cricket may be a mystery to many of you, but it is life affirming, a test of character, patience, & technique, it forges friendships & team spirit, can be played by all ages & sizes, and for youngsters it combines exercise with enjoyment. Please support what the club is trying to do. Michael Hugman

Stradbroke & District Bowls Club I am writing this piece two days away from the opening of our Green on Saturday, 21st April, we have had rain every day this week and it looks like it will be continuing. I know we so badly need rain, so I can only hope that it will stop and we can get started on practising for the matches to come. If you see us playing on Wednesday or Saturday afternoons, please call in and you are welcome to join us, or sit awhile and enjoy the fresh air. Hope to see you on a sunny afternoon. Lily Lofts

Stradbroke Youth Football Club Under 12s Home to Bury Town Lost 1-3 A tough match against a side at the top of the league but a spirited perfomance and our goal was the resut of a good passing move with Joe Serjent finding Jack Smith who slid the ball home. Bury always looked the likelier to score but going in 1-1 at half time was a fair reflection of the game. In the second half Bury scored two late goals to clinch the game. Away to Thetford Independent Won 5 -3 Perfect playing conditions and an excellent performance all round. For the first 20 minutes we dominated the game and went 2-0 up though Matt Knight and Robert Redwood. Owen Hargrave playing in goal for the first time kept us in the game with a brilliant save and we began to look very confident. However we relaxed and let Thetford run through our defence to concede two sloppy goals and go in 2-2 at half time. Joe Serjent swapped with Owen Hargrave for the second half and soon after Owen scored from close range followed by excellent goals from Woody Amour and Matt Knight. Although Thetford pulled one back and despite some heavy tackles from a desperate Thetford defence we remained firmly in control, to run out 5-3 winners. Under 14s Away to Bury Tigers (1st div) Lost 1 - 4 This was always going to be a tough game with only 11 men and not our strongest side against a team in the top of the 1st division side. We went in 1-0 down at half time from a good move by the opposition just before the whistle. The second half started badly with a quick goal while we were still getting in to our stride and we then we conceded 2 more goals as the legs started to get tired. The team were brilliant in defeat. Their best performance of the season! Needham Market Drew 4 - 4 We were two goals down in the first 5 minutes but after this early wake-up call the boys started to get their act together. Richie Courtney managed to avoid the off-side trap and get one goal back. 1-3 down at half time but after pulling a goal back after half time, two more goals from Richie Courtney put us in the lead. At 4 -3 we should have finished it but Needham started to pressurise and got the equaliser. A great game and a fair result. Home to Stowupland Falcons – Won 3 – 0 With a rearranged side and no subs due to absences, the team started surprisingly well. The breakthrough goal fromus came close to half time The second half followed a similar pattern to the first, both sides creating chances. but two goals from Richie Courtney clinched the result. Local Gardeners Notes With restrictions on water coming in across the country it is not surprising we have had above average rainfall for April. It has made it the perfect conditions for sowing seed whether it is grass, flowers or vegetables. It will also make conditions for weed seed perfect too so keep on top of them as they germinate otherwise as soon as the temperature picks up they will romp away, remember covering the soil with mulch will also reduce the weed problem. It is a good time to repair worn out patches of lawn, it may be an edge where plants have grown over and killed the grass or a bald patch where people walk regularly. On the edge just cut a square around the damage to include good grass with a good couple of inches of soil underneath, flip it around so that the good edge is now where the worn out edge was and firm in well, where the worn edge is now you can add a little soil and sow some grass seed. With worn out patches cut out the patch and swap it with a patch of turf from a part of the garden that is not so much in view. The newly formed Stradbroke Allotment and Gardeners Association has recently joined up to the National Allotment Association, this gives many benefits but also includes cheap seeds from Kings, anyone can join the Stradbroke association even if you are not interested in having an allotment to get these benefits, for more details on this refer to the article in this magazine. There has been good progress on the plans for the field purchased by the Village Trust for allotments, orchard and wildlife area. At the moment applications for funding are being put together and all being well, work will get going as soon as the field is available in September. Back to the garden now, May is probably the most exciting month with everything happening at once, don't be tempted to put out tender plants too early as we may still get the odd frost, putting plants out in the day is a good idea as it will help harden them off. Once spring flowering shrubs have done their thing you can cut them back, this will give them time to put on the growth of next year's flowering wood. Now is the perfect time for feeding the borders, shrubs, climbers and roses, a good hand full of blood, fish and bone, Growmore or pelleted chicken manure around the roots will help growth and flowering in the summer. On the border I tend to just broadcast handfuls across the area. It is a good idea to feed hedges occasionally especially evergreen ones like box or yew. It is not necessary to do this every year but once every two to three years should keep them healthy, old compost as a mulch under hedges also works well. If you want to boost the growth of the lawn, Growmore or blood, fish and bone will also work well. Regular hoeing is good at this time to catch the weeds as they germinate, try to do this when the soil is dry and it's not necessary to pick up small weeds, just leave them to shrivel up on the surface. This doesn't work with perennial weeds that have a deep root as they will re shoot so it is best to dig these out. There are a few perennial weeds that are almost impossible to get rid of, bind weed, ground elder and mares tail are probably the worst culprits around here with couch grass also being abit of a pain. In my experience bind weed and ground elder, with great persistence can be got on top of, with a combination of weed killer and digging out over a season. I haven't had much luck with mares tail but have found that regular hoeing does weaken it. Couch grass is best dug out as the roots can be seen quite easily and don't go very deep, you won't get it in one shot and any plants nearby are bound to have it growing through their roots. I don't like to use weed killer and certainly wouldn't use it on or near soil that I am growing fruit or vegetables, but in some instances it is the only way to control certain weeds, in particular Japanese knot weed. It is one of the worst weeds we get in this country and can even effect your house insurance. It is listed a an illegal alien plant, along with other Victorian introductions like Himalayan balsalm and rhododendron ponticum, and it comes with a hefty fine if you are caught dumping it in the country side. I recently read about a small insect that comes from Asia that will feed on the knot weed and can sufficiently weaken it to stop it spreading, it may work here but in the long term it may have it's own problems, hopefully they will check that before introducing it. The cold spell we had back in February hit some evergreen plants quite badly, now is a good time to cut out the dead wood and I would recommend giving the plants a good feed. Even though we have had plenty of rain it is still a good idea to try to save as much water as possible, and rain water is far better than tap water for plants. Make the best of the longer days and warmer weather that I'm sure is just around the corner. Happy gardening, until next month, Luke.

I was recently invited to join the East Anglian Air Ambulance Team aboard the Anglia One helicopter and spent a full day with the crew dealing with medical emergencies. It was a great pleasure to receive an insight into the life-saving work the team does every day of the year in our region. Flying with the crew over the skies of Suffolk brought home to me just how vitally important the air ambulance is for a predominantly rural region such as East Anglia, where much of the land can be difficult to reach for land ambulances in the event of an emergency. That is why I have written a letter to the Health Secretary, the Rt Hon Andrew Lansley, co-signed by most of the MPs in the East of England, calling for a permanent helipad to be established Addenbrooke’s Hospital, so that the air ambulance can continue to play a full part in the rapid treatment of severely injured patients. Like many people in Suffolk and across the region, I am a proud supporter of our Air Ambulance, and everyone who has donated should be proud of themselves for helping to keep this vital service going. We already have an excellent air ambulance system in place in East Anglia, and I shall be fighting to ensure that this remains the case in future. The Coalition Government recently announced its alcohol strategy and set out its plans to introduce a minimum unit price for alcohol to tackle the scourge of binge drinking that blights some of our local communities. It is important to point out that these measures will not in any way penalise people who like to drink in a responsible way, and the price of a normal pint in the local pub will not increase by a single penny. Most of our rural pubs in Suffolk promote a good drinking environment and are often the safest and friendliest places to have a drink. I am glad that the Government has committed to introducing a minimum unit price for alcohol, which will help to tackle problem drinkers, whilst protecting our rural pubs, which play a vital role in bringing our local communities together in Suffolk. I have written many times before about how the single biggest challenge facing Suffolk is properly caring for our growing older population. Our care homes have a vital role to play in meeting this challenge and I was recently delighted to visit Foxearth Lodge Nursing Home in Saxtead to present staff with the Gold Standards Framework Care Homes Accreditation Award, which recognises the achievement of high quality care for people nearing the final years of life. The award, which is open to all 20,724 care homes in Britain has only been achieved by 288 to date. The Gold Standards Framework award is a mark of excellence and I would like to pay tribute to the hard work and effort that James and Hayley Cantrell, along with all their staff, have put in to achieve this remarkable award.
