Remembrance Sunday 2016

On 13th November the village will come together at the War Memorial to remember and honour those who sacrificed their lives in battle. This year has seen the 100 year anniversary of that sacrifice for two village sons, Arthur Norman on 2nd May and Augustus Keeble on 22nd October. Both men were born in Stradbroke and worked as farm labourers in the fields. Arthur was born in 1882 to Robert and MaryAnn Norman. By the time he went to war he had married Kate Larter and had three children of his own. Arthur enlisted into the 2nd Battalion of the Norfolk Regiment and fought in the Mesopotamian campaign where he died. He is buried in the Commonwealth War Graves cemetery at Basra. You will see on the Stradbroke war memorial that the name ‘Arthur Norman’ is shown twice. This is because Arthur’s eldest son, also called Arthur, lost his life in WW2. Augustus Keeble was born in 1888 to Walter and Susannah – one of eight children. He was a single man and enlisted in the 8th Battalion of the Norfolk Regiment. His battalion was present on the first day of the battle of The Somme in 1916 and Augustus is recorded as ‘killed in action’ shortly after that date. His mother had pre-deceased him by 4 years. At least one other sibling had enlisted and survived the war. On the centenary of their deaths it is right that we remember these young men as people and not just as names on a memorial stone. Stradbroke Play Park Fundraising Group We have had a very busy few weeks. The fundraising groups Family Disco was a HUGE success with over 130 people turning up to get their best dance moves on, we raised a fantastic £607.90!!!! We would like to thank Jo & Brett of Amazing Happenings for kindly volunteering to run the disco for us and thank you to the Community Centre who kindly donated a percentage of the bar sales to us. We also had our Charity Calendar sent off to be printed and are already selling extremely well, they are now on sale for £6 around the Village through myself, Katie & Gemma, at the Bakery, The Library, Skinners and Cowham’s Garage. We will also be running stalls to sell the calendars (and a Prize Squares Draw) at both the High Schools FOSHS Christmas fair on Saturday 26th November and at the Primary Schools FOSPS Christmas fair on Friday 2nd December, so if you would like a copy there’s plenty of options on where to buy them and to be able to treat yourself or a family member to a “cheeky” Christmas present! Along with the calendars Stradbroke mum Stacey Hambling has kindly made up some play park logo keyrings which are available to buy from Stacey, ourselves and at our events. Our next event will also be running a PRIZE CHRISTMAS BINGO on FRIDAY 2nd DECEMBER at Stradbroke High School from 7.30pm (Eyes down at 8pm). All are Welcome, we will be running a bar with mince pies available too and have some wonderful prizes lined up from Wine, Chocolates to restaurant vouchers and a Christmas Hamper and there will also be a raffle as well. I’m delighted to say that in the short time we have been going as a fundraising group we have raised over £1000 from the events we have run. By the time you read this we will have run the Bake Sale on 24th October, which falls after the Monthly goes to press, so we will keep you informed of how that event went next month! We will also have had Parish Council Open Event to show off the plans for the play park for the village to look at and give their views on and again I will report the news from that again next month. I am also pleased to say that the Parish Council have pledged a minimum of £15k to the play park fund which I hope shows the commitment Stradbroke Councillors have to helping with village matters that are important to us all. We would also like to thank C.E Davidsons, The Church Exhibition Fund and SAS for the kind donations we have received/been pledged. Ellie Wharton

The glory and the garbage.

On behalf of “Hope Now”

This week has seen great crowds in Manchester and In Stradbroke Wed. 9th Nov at 7pm London excitedly honouring the Olympic heroes Experience the culture of Ukraine Music – singing - dance following their triumph in Rio. Well deserved applause Drama students “Zozulenka” Everyone welcome, collection for “Hope Now” and a Royal reception are a just reward for some amazing feats on field and tract. At the same time as those happy celebrations were going on other people were in more sombre mood as they attended memorial services to commemorate the loss of 144 lives in the Aberfan disaster. On the 21 October fifty years ago a mountainside of coal waste turned into saturated sludge and roaring down the mountain engulfed the village of Aberfan. Homes were destroyed and the village school was totally enveloped, causing the death of 109 pupils and five teachers. No great celebration in Aberfan, equally as we approach Remembrance Sunday it is not a time to celebrate victory, but rather a time of reflection as we recall with thankfulness those who gave their lives for King and country and that we might live in safety and peace. Human history proves that the 17 century philosopher Blaise Pascal was correct when he wrote, “Humans are both the glory and the garbage of the universe”. For we humans are capable of great and noble actions and sadly also capable of extreme evil deeds. Good and bad, love and hate, joy and sorrow co-exist, for this has been the pattern of human history. Of course, in many instances the situation is not within our control, but with God’s help we can sometimes be an agent for change, championing the good. The Biblical view of peace is that it starts at the personal level of peace with God. Creation reconciled and at peace with it’s creator. From that foundation we try to build peace in the local society and beyond. As we recall the sacrifice of others, let us each determine to be peacemakers. It is worth recalling the prayer attributed to St. Francis. Make me a channel of Your peace. Where there is hatred let me bring Your love; Where there is injury, Your pardon Lord; and where there is doubt, true faith in You. Master, grant that I may never seek so much to be consoled as to console; To be understood as to understand; to be loved as to love with all my soul. All Saints - From the Rectory Dear friends and neighbours, A few things have happened this week to make me think about how much we often cram into our days: In particular I had crammed so many meetings in my diary that for three days I hadn’t had any time to reflect or process what had been said, so I cancelled one of my meetings. I then found time to listen to a man who needed to talk to someone, and visit a lady who I didn’t know but was a parishioner, in a care home. This lady is the oldest person I have ever spoken to. I asked was the world better or worse now. She responded by saying that some good and some bad. But then she said but people haven’t got time anymore, which brought me back to my first thoughts about how busy we seem to be and I thought, when did life get so complicated? November is a month of remembering and reflection, when we take time to pause and reflect in two special services: on the 6th at 6.30 in Fressingfield church we have a service of Thanksgiving for those we have loved and have died. Names are read; we remember them; light candles as a prayer in their memory and hopefully find some peace and comfort. The following Sunday is of course Remembrance Sunday when we remember many who died or were injured through war and conflicts, and we take time to remember and reflect and pray for peace. This November I am going to try not to fill my diary so full that there is no time left to pause, remember, listen to others and find rest in our God who always has time for us God bless, Susan

MEETING OF THE PARISH COUNCIL 10th October 2016 The Chairman welcomed all to the meeting and reported that 3 councillors have resigned, Peter Smith, Gerald Jenkins and Ollie Coles. The Clerk would inform Mid Suffolk District Council and the process to appoint new councillors would commence. Planning Applications supported: 2464/16 – 26 Shelton Hill, IP21 5HZ erection of porch. Erection of single storey rear extension incorporating new roof to existing. Councillors unanimously to support this application Other Planning matters: 3408/16 Queen’s Head Inn, Queens Street IP21 5HG – granted 4/10/16 3074/16 Cushion Farm Barn, Laxfield Road IP21 5JJ – granted 3/10/16 2980/16 The Paddocks, Queens Street IP21 5HG – granted 23/9/16 2871/16 (& 2872/16) Glenmore, Queens Street IP21 5HG – no information 2651/16 Hubbards, Queens St IP21 5HG – no information 3150/16 Mulberry Lodge, Laxfield Road IP 21 5NQ – no information 0552/16 62 Westhall - councillors noted that an appeal had been started against the planning decision. 3774/16 Grove Farm – councillors noted the decision notice issued. Improvements to play parks Nick Stones reported that the Community Centre committee had agreed to donate £10,000 towards the improvements to the play parks, there are waiting approval from Mid Suffolk District Council. Councillors expressed their thanks for this donation. Ellie Wharton updated the meeting on fund raising progress to date. 2 grant applications have been submitted, 1 to Adnams and 1 to Tesco. The Vicar has also kindly donated £300 from the Art Exhibition Fund. The 2017 calendar has been received and will be sold over the coming weeks. Ellie thanked Katie and Gemma for helping with the fundraising group. Other The Chair updated councillors on a response he had written to an article by the Stradbroke Trust in last month’s Stradbroke Monthly. There has been no formal communication from the Trust. The Chair has, however, received a copy of the valuation the Trust had carried out and although satisfied with the way the valuation had been carried out the rental figure mentioned was inaccurate at £9,700, Carrie Barnes felt it was nearer to £14,000 last year. Standing orders do not allow the Council to revisit their previous resolution unless a written motion is received from at least three councillors by the Clerk. SID (VAS) - the Clerk has been advised that Suffolk County Council will only approve 2 signs and that other councils have experienced these do not have the battery life they were expecting. The Clerk is investigating the cost of permanent signs with solar panels. Footpath Signs – the sign near the bowling green is not up to date. The Clerk will investigate this and see how if it can be updated. Dog Litter Bins – councillors reviewed a letter from Nigel Brown requesting that a dog litter bin be placed at Wilby Road to stop dog walkers using the school litter bin for their bags of dog mess. The Clerk will investigate the cost. It was also suggested that the High School may consider moving their litter bin as it is red and can be easily confused with a dog litter bin. Neighbourhood Plan - there is an open day on 6th November 10-3 at the community centre. Cllr Flatman reported that she had spoken to planning concerning the wording on the sign at the former Queen’s Head Inn. She was advised there was nothing that could be done to prevent the change of name. Cllr Flatman also reported on half term activities and handed over some publicity for them. Parish Council drop in clinic The Clerk will be working out of the library on the 3rd Tuesday of the month from 2.15pm till 3.15pm. Members of the public are welcome to come along to raise any concerns they may have. If available Parish Councillors may also be present. The next session will be on Tuesday, 22nd November @2.15pm in the library. Members of the public and press are very welcome to attend meetings of the Parish Council and to bring matters of concern or information to the attention to Members in the time allocated to the Public Forum. Dog owners are requested to clean up after their pets and only use the bins designated for dog waste. Do not to use the litter bins when disposing of dog waste, particularly the one situated in the grounds of the High School. If the designated bins are full, please take your bags home. Life in the Legion—The Royal British Legion (Stradbroke and District Branch) I was the speaker at our October monthly meeting of the branch held at Laxfields Royal Oak; attended by eighteen members and guests. The autumn of 1980 was my beginning of a long and happy relationship with the branch, at that time there were nineteen members. I became Branch Chairman in 1983, and have seen many events and some well known guest speakers; and some very good branch officers. The next meeting of the branch is our AGM on Thursday, November 10th. to be held at our usual venue Laxfields Royal Oak, starting at 11.30 am, and I do hope it will be well supported, stay afterwards for lunch (Two courses only £7.50) this meeting will be followed by Remembrance Sunday, 13th, usual format, short service and wreath laying at the village War Memorial, assemble at 10.50 am, followed by a service in All Saints Church. The Royal British Legion “We will always Remember them” Michael Burton, Branch Chairman

W.I. This was an eagerly anticipated evening and the members arrived promptly admiring the impressive display of shrubs and various plants laid out in preparation for our speaker for the evening who was Matthew TantonBrown , a well known horticulturist from East Bergholt. Jill and Jane introduced the evening and I am happy to say had the pleasure of welcoming another new member Yvonne Wilkins to our midst. Birthday buttonholes were distributed hostesses thanked and then we settled down to hear from our speaker. Matthew launched into his subject with enthusiasm and a rather wicked sense of humour which we all enjoyed throughout his talk which was sprinkled with comic anecdotes and little asides . First we heard about soil types and which plants suited each area plus how to improve or alter the soil to suit the planned planting, after this he moved on to talk about the Acer family of shrubs and trees , the amazing variety of colours and leaf shapes and showing us the different varieties from the display he had set out for us. How to ensure a show of colour throughout the seasons using different families of trees and shrubs was next along with some samples from the display to help us appreciate the possibilities. There was one plant which we were told would give us bright purple fruits later in the season but when he showed us these, with a big grin on his face, they were most unattractive bunches of long bulbous dull purple “things” for want of a more descriptive word, known as dead mans’ fingers, ah, not quite what we had hoped for and summarily dismissed by all. Tips on pruning came next, time and level of cutting and to beware of making the tree or shrub bleed, pictures of bandages and sticking plasters came to mind. Matthew used to train and work at Wisley Horticultural Centre and gleefully related the story of how they dealt with visiting W.I. groups. It seems they had a reputation for acquiring ‘free’ cuttings utilising large handbags and voluminous coats. When these ladies arrived they were followed discreetly around the gardens and greenhouses using radio communication to warn other areas of their impending arrival and both sides worked with military precision to achieve their differing aims , all good humoured ,and when the ladies retreated to the café the Wisley guards were stood down until the next time. The need for bright berries and other fruits for the birds and flowers for the bees was discussed next and there were plenty of examples for us to see, I would like to tell you some of their names but Latin is not my strong point and trying to spell them might cause confusion, but safe to say they can all be found in good garden centres. When talking about trees particularly we were informed of the need for male and female versions in close proximity to ensure good flowering and fruiting and that it is not always easy to tell the difference between them, and, what’s more, some males of the species require two females ,oh yes!!. Also, we learnt that as male plants age they become long thin and spindly, huh, sadly the females become stockier. Some thoughts on colour styling came next, again how to keep colour through the seasons high and low in the garden followed by the theory that those who plant in a colour co-ordinated fashion are a sophisticated lot, those who plant using white and pastel shades are demure in nature and those of us who plant in random hectic colour schemes are downright dangerous and to be avoided in dark alleyways, really? We thoroughly enjoyed our evening and after a question and answer session Matthew was thanked by Caroline and had a well earned cup of tea after which he kindly donated a lovely shrub to our raffle ,many thanks. Our next meeting will be our annual meeting on November 10th all most welcome . Prue Rush

Stradbroke High School ‘Punching Way Above its Weight’ India Knight, author and Sunday Times columnist, told parents and guests that Stradbroke High School is “a small school but it punches way above its’ weight” at last night’s annual Awards Evening. This was one of the opening remarks of the keynote address of the evening, during which pupils were presented with certificates and trophies for effort and achievement. In front of an audience of families, staff, governors and pupils, Ms Knight who says she moved her family from London to come and be near this school, presented all the evening’s awards and commented that pupils “are being given every educational advantage and just as importantly…being taught how to be amazing, confident, likeable, compassionate human beings”. After describing her own experiences at school and how the exponential growth of social media has changed people’s lives, Ms Knight commented on the brilliant education pupils are receiving at Stradbroke and how education; “ is the answer to fears about the world being too huge in one way and weirdly small in another. Education will help you find your place in the world, whatever size it is”. In impressing upon the students in the packed sports hall how important it is to have aspirations and work hard to achieve them, Ms Knight reiterated that; “ If you simply aspire in your heart to living your life happily and well, and to being in control of your own destiny, then that is what will happen.” She added that as a young teenager she realised that; “the meaning of life is being aware of your own agency. Your agency means your own power to change the world, even in a small way, every day just by being you and doing the things you do. Just by being fantastic you.” Ms Knight went on to extend the sentiment of the Vice Chair of Governors Brian Goffee and the Head of School, John Axtell who had referred to the message in the film The Wizard of Oz about the importance of believing that you can make a difference because the power is with you all the time. In conclusion, Ms Knight urged pupils; “Don’t be frightened of your anxieties. Don’t think you have to be brash and over-confident all the time. It’s fine to feel confused sometimes, or unsure of things, or hesitant, or upset. It’s how we learn and grow. So never put yourselves down. Never think “I can’t” or “it’s too hard” or “they’d never want me”. Nothing is going to land in your lap. You’ll need to work hard. But if you work hard, there’s nothing you can’t do.” Sally Clarke, Director of Enterprise, Stradbroke High School sally.clarke@stradbrokehigh.co.uk Telephone: 01379 384387

Wingfield and District Gardening Club At the end of September we listened with great interest to Lucinda Skinner of Wootens, on Irises. There are basically two root systems, one bulbous whose roots are a modified leaf system (Reticulata etc) and Rhysonata (Bearded and non Bearded), a modified stem system. The type of soil which you have in your garden rather governs the varieties that are successful , whether well drained, in partial shade or full sun. Reticulata in February needs a little bone meal after flowering. Bearded Iris which flower in May, need moist and sunny positions. Iris Spuria do well in clay and the Flag Iris does well in the place one usually sees them, next to ponds, so damp conditions are necessary. Iris Japonica and Lazica add to the months that one can have flowers. A fascinating evening when we all learned a little more! We meet again on 24th November at Brundish Village Hall at 7.30pm to hear Tim Fuller Carolyn Treylan

Neighbourhood Plan Open Day We would like to invite everyone to our Open Day where there will be a full and comprehensive display of the responses to the recent Neighbourhood Plan Questionnaire. Besides the maps of potential development areas, you will be able to see how the village voted for each area as well as their thoughts on the type of development. Were you someone who said that broadband was very poor or that the traffic was a major concern? Did others agree or disagree with you? This is your opportunity not only to look at how we have teased out the facts and figures but the full package of responses will also be available. We have also prepared a display of important views around the village and you will be able to make further comment about your reaction to these and whether we have missed any. The Neighbourhood Plan Committee will be there to answer any of your questions and discuss the findings and we look forward to your contributions. This will be an informal drop-in - no speeches, no talks - but a sharing of your feedback with an opportunity to raise other issues before we begin to write the draft plan. The bar will be open and tea, coffee and biscuits will be available so we hope you will take some time to call in and chat about results. We look forward to seeing you on SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 6th. 10.00am - 3.00pm in the Community Centre Gillian Rennie-Dunkerley - Chair of NP Committee

Fantastic Friends hit ISC fundraising target Halesworth Community Nursing Care Fund (HCNCF) will soon begin building a valuable resource centre for people with life-limiting illnesses after receiving a generous donation from a local group which smashed through the campaign’s fundraising target. The Patrick Stead League of Friends has pledged £55,605 towards the information and support centre (ISC) project – which takes the total raised to more than £710,000* and means that work can start once planning permission has been secured. It is the second time the Friends have supported the campaign, and comes after the group made a £20,000 donation in December 2014. Karen Kerridge, chair of the Friends, said: “Members of the League of Friends are absolutely delighted to be able to support HCNCF with this innovative project and to take the campaign to its target goal. “The ISC will be a tremendous boost and a valuable asset to Halesworth and the surrounding area. Our thanks go to the dedicated and hard-working volunteers that have led this campaign over the last two years, and who have made this happen for Halesworth." The ISC will be built on land next to Cutler’s Hill Surgery in Halesworth, and will bring a full range of holistic services closer to home for people in north east Suffolk and south Norfolk who have cancer or other life-limiting illnesses. People will be able to drop-in to receive help understanding their diagnosis and coming to terms with their illness. A range of support will be available for both patients and their families, including benefits advice, children and family support, complementary therapies, counselling and bereavement support. The centre will also provide a venue for local support groups to meet. It is hoped that construction will begin in 2017, with building work complete by the end of the year and the centre opening in early 2018. HCNCF will continue to raise money to help fund the ISC’s running costs. Issued by Liz Hearnshaw at Zenith Public Relations on 01359 242581 or 07501 490308.

Saving All Saints By the time of publication we will have received all entries for the logo competition and will reveal the winning design next month. Many thanks to all who entered with a great variety of creative ideas. As promised we would like to give you an outline of what work needs doing and the process for applying for this grant: Urgent work is needed to replace and secure the southern and northern roofs, most of the windows, the downpipes and all the drains immediately surrounding the church as water is pouring into the building. The critical points have been temporarily fixed while we put forward the application for funding. This future work will be combined with extensive repairs within the church in the beams, walls and plaster which have suffered water damage. Once this is completed we have an ambitious plan to create a large new space for exhibition and performance, installing a kitchen area and a toilet. This will involve the removal of some pews, laying new flooring and incorporating new lighting. The heating arrangements including the boiler will be rejuvenated as well. The specialist architects have drawn up 2 possible plans which are currently being considered by the Friends of the Church, the PCC and the Diocesan Committee. When the final plan is approved we intend to display it for you to view along with the ideas for the future development of the church to engage a wide range of people for secular use alongside religious use. We will only gain funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund if we put forward a fully comprehensive community plan which we have already outlined to them and this has been received very favourably. The time-scale for submitting a full application is a long one with the next deadline being February and a decision made in June. This will allow us to begin the development phase. However, if we are eventually successful, the grant will save All Saints and provide us all with many new community opportunities in Stradbroke. Next month: the logo will be revealed and details issued about the ambitious plans for the church building and its future usage. Gillian Rennie-Dunkerley on behalf of the Saving All Saints Committee

Castleton Brass - National Finalists Two Years Running In 2015 Castleton Brass returned to contesting at the Regional Championships of the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain. A second place in the fourth section meant the band received an invite to the National Finals at Cheltenham. Twelve months later the band did one better and came first and is now the current London & Southern Counties Fourth Section Champions and once again received an invite to the National Finals. These two impressive performances have led to the band gaining promotion to the third section from 2017. Two of the band’s solo cornet players have recently left the band for university and the band would welcome cornet players to fill the vacancies. Castleton Brass rehearses at the Mid Suffolk Business Park between 7.30pm and 9.30pm on a Tuesday evening. For further information or to apply please contact Christine Wade on 01449 672600 or email info@castletonbrass.org.uk. Christine Wade

But this innocuous contest is not all it seems - Dima is a long-time servant of the Russian mafia, whose new boss, 'The Prince', wants him and his family dead. Sports Roundup

Stradbroke Cricket Club We all try to hang on to Summer as long as possible, but the sight of the cricket square, scarified, re-seeded, & top dressed, indicate the cricket season is over, replaced by the AGM season, where every other week there seems to be a meeting to attend. In an attempt to safeguard the future of the Club, a five year plan is being drawn up. It centres around, ensuring that the Club financially solvent, keeping the adult team competitive, kick starting the Junior section, maintaining facilities, & generally getting more people involved with the Club, either by playing or volunteering. This will be rolled out in the coming months, including how the people of Stradbroke can help keep our village cricket club, the hub of the Community. The first food for thought is finding a new fund raising event. People move into the village all the time. Is there an event you have held or attended in the past, that may be new & innovative? Your thoughts, please, emailed to michael@hugman.orangehome.co.uk . We are here to listen. Thank you for continuing to support your local cricket club.” Michael Hugman

Food With Friends As you may have read elsewhere in the magazine, plans are afoot to rescue the fabric of the building of all Saints Church, and many fund raising events have been held over the past years for this purpose. These events have been very varied and one event started last year is proving to be very popular and is at present raising £90 per month (£1,080 per year) and to continue raising this amount or even more, we invite more people to join us. To join in, you have to prepare a meal for 8 people once every 12 to 15 months, and be a guest at other meals whenever you are able. Some wonderful meals have been produced including Asian, Italian and French type foods, along with a Champagne breakfast, as well as some delicious and very naughty desserts. Naughty yes, but I for one am not thinking of becoming good! The host prepares the meal at their own cost, which doesn't have to be expensive (this being their contribution to the fund), and guests pay £15 per head and take along their own wine. It is most certainly not a competition, but a wonderfully sociable way to enjoy a meal with old friends and hopefully make some new ones. We would love to welcome you at the feast. News & Views NHS Continuing Health Care NHS Continuing Healthcare is NHS fully funded care that is provided for individuals who are not in hospital and have been assessed as having a “primary health need”. A couple of the many misconceptions are: “I have to be in a nursing home/care home to receive it.” No, the care maybe provided in your own home; and “It is dependent on my income and size of my bank account.” No, NHS Continuing Healthcare is not means tested. Nevertheless, it is still difficult to meet the criteria for obtaining NHS Continuing Healthcare because it looks at a whole range of needs together with their severity and complexity. When reviewing and assessing your needs, you may be reviewed using a screening tool called the Checklist to identify if you may be eligible for NHS Continuing Healthcare. However, it is not an indication as to whether or not you are actually eligible. This can be done by a nurse if you are in hospital and on a pathway to being discharged; a doctor or nurse in your own home or a social worker. There are other practitioners that may also be able to complete the Checklist. If after going through the Checklist it suggests you may be eligible, the local clinical commissioning group (CCG) will then write to you to confirm whether or not you will be referred for a full assessment of your needs. This assessment is carried out by a multidisciplinary team, using a tool called the Decision Support Tool. This tool is used to assess whether your main or primary care needs relate to your health by looking at several types of care needs. The multidisciplinary team will then make a recommendation to the CCG about your eligibility. The CCG will then write to you to confirm whether or not you are eligible. If you are eligible for NHS Continuing Healthcare, the next stage is to arrange a suitable care package. Please be aware that that your eligibility for NHS Continuing Healthcare will be reviewed regularly. If your care needs change, the funding arrangements may change. For more information about the NHS Continuing Healthcare checklist and the Decision Support Tool visit: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/national-framework-for-nhs-continuinghealthcare-and-nhs-fundednursing-care. Regular readers will know that the issue of reliable broadband connectivity is something which I am absolutely committed to seeing rolled out not only here in Central Suffolk and North Ipswich, but also across the entire county of Suffolk. Only last Friday, I chaired a Broadband Summit Meeting, kindly hosted by Suffolk Chamber of Commerce and I was delighted to welcome the Minister with responsibility for Digital Services, the Rt. Hon. Matthew Hancock, who set out his vision for digital services here in Suffolk. The closed meeting brought together senior representatives from BT, Openreach, Suffolk County Council and key organisations representing their members’ views, was also attended by my fellow Suffolk MPs, Peter Aldous, Dr Therese Coffey, and Jo Churchill, all of whom brought to the meeting examples from their own constituencies. First and foremost, the meeting was an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of the Better Broadband for Suffolk programme and recognise that Suffolk truly is leading the field nationally in the rollout of better broadband provision. I was delighted to hear that only last Friday, Suffolk achieved another goal in being first in the country to sign a second contract for further rollout of broadband welcome news indeed. However the meeting was also an opportunity to reflect on what more needs to be done in bringing reliable and efficient broadband connectivity to the most rural parts of the county, a significant portion of which is here in Central Suffolk. The Digital Services Bill is currently going through Parliament and part of this means that the Government has committed to delivering a minimum Universal Service Obligation of 10Mbps to every premise in the UK. For some, this remains a long way off, particularly in some parts of Central Suffolk, but I am encouraged that this is set to be achieved by 2020 and I shall continue to monitor progress closely. An interesting point raised at the meeting was the potential for Government to consider a dedicated and improved Universal Service Obligation of 15Mbps for businesses and I will continue to work closely with my fellow Parliamentary colleagues to fully look into this possibility. It is absolutely critical for business confidence and the economy that our local businesses have all the tools they need to compete in an ever increasing global market, so digital connectivity should certainly be a priority. I am particularly heartened by the commitment of colleagues at Suffolk County Council, BT and Openreach to consider the publication of clearer timetables for those currently waiting to benefit from better broadband. This is welcome news for residents and businesses, especially so for those in rural communities who will be able to benefit from accessing online services, or for students looking to research their homework online. I am reassured that those attending the meeting are all as committed as I am to ensuring the successful rollout of better broadband across Suffolk and we have already agreed to a further meeting next year to review progress and celebrate further success stories as more people can access service. I was also delighted to visit Laxfield Primary School to hear all about their success in growing their own produce, with pupils able to showcase the fruits of their efforts at the recent Aldeburgh Food Festival. I was thoroughly impressed by the enthusiasm and commitment shown by staff and pupils who proudly showed me around their garden and told me all about their recycled greenhouse project, even sharing some of their produce which was freshly harvested that day.
