Stradbroke – Ukraine Jackie’s report. Firstly, thank you for the gifts that were donated for the trip to Ukraine, and because of your generosity, many people have benefitted from your giving. The harvest in Ukraine has been very good after a very poor one last year. Having been able to spend some time with village people, it is very heart wrenching to see the poverty. Hardly any running water, no sewerage system, wells to collect water from, and just holes in gardens for a toilet with a piece of plastic sheeting for a little privacy. At -20 or less in winter, a very chilly prospect! Oil drums in gardens to collect water, so that in the summer the sun heats the water so that “summer showers” can be had. But through all the hardship, these people are so grateful for all they have, and they thank God for everything that they eat, and own. Some of the stories were so sad, like the lady who told us that as a child, she, her brother and sister were so hungry after the war that they left their home and wandered to other villages to try and get food. Her brother developed pneumonia and died in hospital. The sisters had to collect the body, and it took 2 days for them to dig the grave. Many more stories like that were told. However, my time was so rewarding, and we enjoyed the hugs and many kisses. I will be returning to Ukraine in January, please do donate to this very worthy cause; toiletries, chocolates gloves, scarves, hats etc. So once again thank you from the people of Ukraine. As we travel with the Christian charity “Hope Now” we are able to obtain special tickets which allow each of us to take 69 kilos of luggage. Thank you British Airways! On November 13th the singing/dancing group Zozulenka will be returning for an afternoon performance - watch out for the posters. - Jackie For further details please contact: John 388751 Jackie 384112

A Message from Rev Susan Dear friends & neighbours, I can hardly believe summer is over, the harvest is in and we need to turn on the heating! I am not fond of winter but I do love autumn. I love it when the leaves begin to turn into autumn colours, the birds visit the garden more often lured by seed, and there is the promise of cosy evenings safely in the warm with family or friends. Of course for some people as the temperature lowers they will be worrying about the cost of heating, and for some going without a hot meal can make life in the cold miserable. So why not invite a #neighbour in for a hot meal, it doesn’t have to be grand but sharing with others brings its own glow of warmth inside. Jesus often ate a meal with others, the religious leaders and teachers ridiculed him for eating with ‘sinners’. However, the bible tells us that Jesus came not for a few special people; instead he came for all people, no matter who we are and what we have done. Each one of us deserves the title of sinner: an unkind word, seeing the worst in someone instead of the best, not loving our neighbours as ourselves and the first commandment tells us that we are to love the Lord God with all our heart, mind and strength - how many of us manage that? People often say to me that they cannot put God before their loved ones. My response is that God loves our loved ones far more that we can ever do, so loving him first and asking him to watch over those we love is, I believe, the best and safest thing we can do for them. To trust God with those we love has to start with us trusting him for our own lives, and as we get to know and trust him more we find we can trust others to him too. Any journey begins with one step; as we move into another season why not consider taking a step towards the God of all seasons - I think you’ll find his love warming you whatever the weather. God bless, Susan

The inconvenience that has ensued was regretted but this work was essential as the surface had started to deteriorate at a speedy rate. The contractors would work as quickly as they could to minimise the disruption. SPEEDWATCH: information was awaited from the Police co-ordinator to enable the scheme to progress. It was understood that the requisite number of volunteers had now come forward. It was hoped that SpeedWatch would be a deterrent to speeding on the roads into and out of the village. If you have a complaint to make please rest assured that your details will never be made public by the Clerk but if you are not prepared to divulge your name no action can be taken. Life in the Legion “Life in the Legion”. Stradbroke & District Branch of the Royal British Legion welcomed Charles Michell as their speaker on Thursday, 12 September, on Local Government. It was most interesting to us all, and I gave the vote of thanks. We remembered the recent death of former County President, Major-General Jack Dye. Treasurer Bernard Mills gave his monthly report, and David Streeter read correspondence, and on behalf of Peter Chetwynd, the local organizer, reported that last year’s Poppy Appeal total for Stradbroke and Wilby was £4,076.68. Our Standard Bearer, Joyce Cooper, reported on events she has attended, and that she has been selected to go to this year’s Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall. Ken Rowbottom, our H Group rep. on the County Committee gave his report. The Hoxne Branch may have to close, and the Suffolk RBL office is now at Henley, Ipswich. We meet at Laxfield on Thursday, 10 October, at 11.30 am, at the King’s Head, when Lt.General Sir Christopher Wallace, KCB, DL, makes his fifth visit to us. Members, please attend if you can. W.I We started our September meeting by members observing a minutes silence in memory of Amanda Bjors-Wright who sadly passed away on August 27th. On a happier note Jean Morgan thanked members for the beautiful plant she and her husband David received from members for their 55th wedding anniversary (emerald) Once again there was a very good response for donations to the Diss Food Bank and members were thanked for their support. It was then our pleasure to welcome Andy Malcolm to our meeting, who had come to talk to us about ‘The true cost of fish’ Initially, I think most of us had expected to be told about fishing quotas and government rulings etc. but not a bit of it. Working for the Fishermen’s Mission Charity, Andy Malcolm was a joy to listen to. After some background facts about the mission, which was started 132 years ago by Ebenezer Mather, he told us how after working for years with British Telecom, he left to take up the job of ‘Raising Awareness of the Fishermen’s Mission ‘and to be a fund raiser for the Eastern Region. Andy was a natural speaker and so entertaining. We had stories, jokes galore, (parrots featuring heavily) sea shanties and even a poem about ‘Fishing for fish fingers’, and an astounding fact that we consume 300,000,000 portions of fish and chips per year. After the evening with Andy we were all so much more aware of the ‘Fishermen’s Mission’. Laura Hanley gave him a very warm vote of thanks. On October 10th our speaker will be Miss P.Baker talking about ‘Frock Horror’ Why not come along and join us for the evening. New members and visitors are always very welcome. Gill Bird
Stradbroke High School Stradbroke Classic Car & Bike Show It was a day of celebration at Stradbroke High School when cars and bikes of the past gathered for the school’s second Classic Car & Bike Show. We were joined by local stallholders and companies offering goods and services. The cars ranged from a Porsche 917K Replica, Ferrari 458, Lamborghini Gallardo, Minis, Austin Healey, Morris Minor Traveller, Austin A35 to a Burlington Hot Rod. There was even a selection of classic scooters, mopeds, bikes and trikes. As you may imagine, the show was well supported by members of the Fressingfield Oily Rag Club. As the day came to a close we enjoyed the flypast of a P51 Mustang, kindly donated by Maurice Hammond. We are delighted to announce that the event raised approximately £2579.20 for the pupils of Stradbroke High School. Thank you to everyone who supported our event. Stradbroke High School Press Office

Stradbroke Cinema On Thursday, 17th October, we are showing “Arbitrage”. Admission is £5.50 at 7.00 for 7.30 pm. The Bar will be open, and ice-creams on sale in the interval. Director and Writer: Nicholas Jarecki, Stars: Susan Sarandon, Brit Marling and Richard Gere, a much undervalued actor, best employed when discovering sympathetic aspects of weak or dislikable people, gives one of his best performances in this business thriller as Robert Miller, ace hedge fund manager. At the age of 60, Miller has everything – a good-looking family, a trophy wife, a private jet, a reputation as a philanthropist, a billion dollars in the bank and a fine art collection on the wall. Unfortunately, a bad deal involving Russian copper has led him into debt and fraud, he supports a young mistress whose art gallery he's invested in, and very soon an LAPD detective,Tim Roth, is breathing down his neck. This is a movie about a man with his back to the wall, facing disgrace on several fronts and the possibility of exchanging his Armani suit for prison garb. Can he get off the hook? Effective thriller that demystifies Wall Street without diminishing its complexity Cinema is “Song for Marion” on Thursday, 21st November. Fressingfield Oily Rag Club, a local group of Historic Racing Car enthusiasts who regularly meet in the Community Centre, will be joining forces with us to show “Rush”, with Daniel Brühl, Chris Hemsworth, Olivia Wilde and Natalie Dormer in the New Year. It’s a re-creation of the merciless 1970s rivalry between Formula One competitors James Hunt and Niki Lauda, so watch this space for furMargaret Streeter ther details.

Radio Stradbroke The idea to hold 'Monthly Music Night' during the summer months has been a great success, for Radio Stradbroke, and in an attempt to extend the season, there will be one more on: Wednesday 16th October - 'Pick Of The Pops', with Top 20s from the following years: 8pm - October 1973 with DJ Wally 9pm - October 1983 with DJ Huggy 10pm - October 1993 with Kimberley the 1st Lady of broadcasting. Let those memories flood back! If that is not enough, 'Sunday Sessions' are back from November 3rd, right through the winter. More details next month. Finally, Radio Stradbroke will be broadcasting Stradbroke Jazz Day on Saturday 5th October. Support this great event. Log on to www.stradbroke.org.uk Thank you. Michael Hugman
Letters To the Editor Jeremy and Anne Higgins are very grateful for all the best wishes that we have received now that we have moved away from the village. Our 26 years in Stradbroke have been a most enjoyable period in our lives, and will be long remembered by both of us. Jeremy & Anne Higgins I would like to thank everyone in Laxfield Road, Stradbroke, who kindly gave towards the collection for Marie Curie Cancer Care. The total amount collected was £80.00. Stella Goddard My husband and I moved into Stradbroke at the end of June 2013, we moved from a village in between Thaxted, Saffron Walden and Finchingfield in Essex. We left behind a Barn conversion (having been an old Hay Barn), which we moved into as soon as it was finished and lived there just over 6 years. We had discussed for a fair time that we would move to somewhere on the Norfolk/Suffolk border, and after viewing several properties we settled on the house we are now living in just off Laxfield Road, and we love everything about it, and although we are very new to the Village everyone we have met has been so kind and friendly. So, through the "Stradbroke Monthly", we would like to say a Great Big Thank you not only to all the Villagers who have made us so very welcome, but also to Barry and Diane Barham (whose building firm built the house) and Peter Smith and his wife for making sure that we are settling in okay, many thanks. The downside is, that the Grandchildren love the village as well and want to spend more time with us! Malcolm and Sidna Napier As a conscientious dog walker in Stradbroke, I have been highly offended by the anonymous letter received and report to the Parish Council, stating that I persistently allow my dog to foul a driveway in Woodfields. Any further complaints, I would appreciate the courtesy of a face to face discussion on this matter. J Walton

Suffolk Community Foundation’s Healthy Ambitions Fund Suffolk Community Foundation is currently delivering a Healthy Ambitions Fund on behalf of Healthy Ambitions Suffolk to support groups in Suffolk that aim to help children under the age of seven to have the best possible start in life. The fund aims to reduce health inequalities for children under the age of seven by supporting work focused around healthy eating and physical activity programmes. These programmes should be designed to reduce inequalities in the early development of physical and emotional health, cognitive, linguistic and social skills as well as develop the resilience and wellbeing of young children. Community groups, charities and social enterprises can apply for a grant from the Healthy Ambitions Fund with up to £500 grants available for small one off projects and up to £5,000 grants available for larger projects. The deadline for applications to the Healthy Ambitions fund is the 30th September 2013. If you wish to discuss your idea or potential application request then please do not hesitate to telephone Sue Wright on 01473 786917. Further information along with application forms, guidelines and closing dates are available on Suffolk Community Foundation’s website www.suffolkcf.org.uk. British Red Cross British Red Cross-Across Suffolk- Autumn/ Winter Snapshot of what we do near you. Suffolk Mobility Aids loan service has gone mobile. We can now deliver medical equipment such as wheelchairs or commodes to your home! We found that vulnerable people across the county often could not get to a local Red Cross centre and so we have introduced a new delivery service. The equipment loans are still free but there is a charge for delivery. Borrowed items can still be collected free of charge from: Bury St Edmunds, Haverhill, Ipswich, Woodbridge, Newmarket and Southwold. We also sell second hand wheelchairs. So far this year we have raised £50,000 locally for Red Cross services in Suffolk. This winter we need to raise £3000 to teach life-saving first aid skills to homeless people in Suffolk. Would you recognise the signs of hypothermia, and know what to do? We are out and about in Suffolk schools at the moment with the Crucial Crewteam. This brings together agencies such as Police, Fire and Red Cross to teach junior children how to stay safe and what to do in an emergency. A ten year old child may be able to put you on your side in the recovery position, a simple action which could save your life! Each school visit costs the Red Cross £50. Our Open Gardens raised over £10,000 for Suffolk services this summer and we’re looking for people to help run the scheme. If you are good at organising, baking or like to meet new people, get in touch – join the team and you could help us to raise £15,000 next year. We spend more on helping people in Suffolk than we raise. If you would like me to talk to your local group about the work of the Red Cross (or for anything else) contact Jane Dow on 01284 727247. Thank you for your support. Jane Dow

Memories of My Days in Stradbroke from 1909 to 1923 by Claude Rush. These detailed memories of Stradbroke have recently come to light amongst the Village Archive material saved and stored for many years by Geoffey Smith. They were written in 1964 while Claude was living in retirement in Felixstowe and fortunately he was blessed with a very good memory for names and events. He was not quite six years old when he moved into the village in 1909. It is intended to publish a selection of his memories month by month in the magazine and then later to place it all on the Stradbroke Website. Thanks are due to Dorothy Readman who kindly retyped the whole manuscript into a modern format.
I had never heard a word of French spoken in my life – still no broadcasting then – and for my first French dictation I had ½ /10 – just half one mark! At the end of the first term the Principal (Mr H A Webb – no relation to the Stradbroke Webbs as far as I know) asked the French Mistress, Miss Pearson, whether I ought to be put in a lower form because of my utter ignorance of that language and apparent inability to grasp anything of it. She told him that I had just begun to pick up. And, as it happened, I had. Suddenly I got a grip of it and all which was so mysterious became so clear – in a few terms I was top boy for French in the form. The train was due at Stradbroke at 6.30 pm on the home journey. It was more often than not late – sometimes very late – I think 9 pm once. Then I had homework to do, go to bed, up and off to school again. Oh! I was glad when Friday came – so different from Arnold Street, Lowestoft! It was just before and just after the end of the war and coal was scarce. Consequently broken up sleepers were being put into the engine furnace with resultant loss of steam pressure. There was a steep slope up out of Haughley Station – the engine always had to puff and lose speed but, except for once, managed to get over the top at snail’s pace. Once we came to a halt on the slope and had to wait while more steam was generated. On another occasion we arrived at Mendlesham (4 ½ miles from Haughley) and found that no guard got out onto the platform. His van had been put in position at the rear when the train was made up at Haughley, but had not been coupled, so that when he gave the all clear by blowing his whistle and showing the green light, he had been left behind. We had to back the 4 ½ miles to Haughley to pick him up. There was no turntable at Mendlesham. No wonder we were late sometimes! When about 12 years old I had a No. 0 Brownie camera. With it I took and processed photographs (daylight printing) of a number of Stradbroke wives with babies, so that the photos could be sent to the men away at war. Some of them had not seen some of their children. Mention of the war reminds me how, at Stradbroke, we could sometimes tell when a battle was raging in France – we could hear the rumbling of the guns like distant thunder lasting day and night for several days. A few days afterwards news of some offensives would appear in the papers. As the war was closing many people at Stradbroke were laid low with what was then termed Spanish ‘Flu. I was one – in bed for a week. My mother followed me and was at death’s door, but was on the point of recovering (she did recover) as the Church bells rang to announce that the armistice had been signed – 11th November 1918. That night, one over-happy man came out of the White Hart, grabbed all the money in his pocket and, flinging it high into the darkness in the street, shouted ‘The war is O-VAH!’ Peace was signed 26th June 1919 and there was a public holiday to celebrate the event, 19th July. At Stradbroke we had sports in a meadow at Hall Farm and Canon Upcher, then about 70, joined in the race for ‘Boys over 60’. He had been AAA ¼ mile champion when at Cambridge 50 years earlier. When the pistol was fired he purposely ran the wrong way for several paces, then stopped, turned and ran past all other participants to be at the finishing line to welcome them in. The War Memorial on the Church Corner was unveiled by Lord Henniker on 30th July 1922 in the presence of a large crowd which nearly filled the corner. Bishop David dedicated it. My father was overtaken by heart trouble in April 1914 and was forbidden to cycle. Consequently he supervised his section (Mendham, Fressingfield, Laxfield, Hoxne and Worlingworth police beats) by having a horse and cart, carrying on throughout the war and retiring 31st March 1919. Not being able to get a house in Stradbroke we lived at Moat Farm, Horham, for 6 months. Then my father bought Melvin Villa,Wilby Road, Stradbroke, a holding then of 9 acres. I think it is now Melville, but it was original Melvin after Daniel Elvin from whom my father bought it. As my father was unable through ill health to do much work I left Stowmarket Secondary School in July 1919 and worked on the holding. My father died 23rd November 1920, aged 49. My mother and I stayed on. To be continued:

Stradbroke Cricket Club The final month of the cricket season has been eventful, to say the least. With just the Presidents XI match & Annual Presentation Evening left (details next month), plus Autumn pitch renovations, 2013 can be described as mixed. The Vikings suffered from a lack of availability of players, hence their lowly league finish. Their final game was against champions Tendring. Liam Smith(47),Marcus Marvell(25), Ben Flatt(20), & James Webster(18) battled against some tight bowing, but 168 was never going to be enough. The biggest victory they had, however, came off the field, with the Two Counties disciplinary panel finding insufficient evidence to take further action following an alleged incident after a home game, which the less reputable end of the national press reported as something between an altercation and common assault. Thankfully no one chose to believe the Daily Chip Wrapper. The A Team, by contrast, did their assaulting on the field, finishing 3rd in their league thanks to 6 successive wins. Already promoted Brantham were no match to James Gilbee(3 for 50) & Fergus Morgan(3 for 19), leaving Dan Tompkins(39) & Matt Wise(27) to knock off the runs. They then secured their place in the John Boast Plate Final defeating Wortham(172 for 8), based around a skilled innings of 89 from Marvell, supported by Owen Morgan(28). Sadly they fell at the final hurdle. Gilbee(3 for 36) restricted Saxmundham to 201, but after Alan Barker(59) & Wise (26) only Smith(28) offered much resistance, but it offered hope for next season. Keep supporting your local cricket club. Michael Hugman

NEWSFLASH! Clean Space Awards Mid Suffolk District Council has entered the Clean Space Awards 2013. The judges normally visit 3 or 4 towns and parishes within the district but give no advance warning of the date or route they will take. The unannounced judging will take place sometime in October so perhaps everyone can help to keep Stradbroke tidy in case it is on the list for a visit? The results will be announced in February. Stradbroke Gardeners’ & Association Newsletter This month we have a very poetic sloe gin recipe that should be ready for Christmas from Gill, a handy tip for picking fruit from Mary delivered with her usual enthusiasm and a courgette recipe that doesn't have a fritter in sight. Sloe gin Days of mist and mellow fruitfulness will soon be upon us, so why not take the opportunity to make some Sloe gin. Traditionally it was made after the sloes had their first frost (I think it helped break the skins) but sloes can be picked as soon as they are ripe and given a blast in the freezer. If you don't have a freezer the sloes should be pricked with a needle. I prefer just to roll them over my grater to puncture the skin. Place the sloes in a wide mouthed jar, use a pound of sloes for a litre of gin. Adding two or three crushed almonds (optional) gives an intriguing marzipan edge to the finished drink. Sugar can be added at this stage, 8oz is the normal amount for a litre, but the alcohol will extract the flavour from the sloes more rapidly if the sugar is added later. This second method also means you can tinker with the sweetness to suit your palate. Leave the sloes infusing in the gin for two to three months, then strain, sweeten if not done earlier and bottle. This makes a welcome Christmas gift. Fruit picking Tip WOW! Look at that tall tree covered in plums, how are you going to reach them without going up a ladder? Easy guys, this is how you do it. Find an old biscuit tin, one large but thin nail and either a cane or old stick of sorts. An old broom stick is brilliant. Nail the tin onto the top of the stick. Hold the tin on the stick under the fruit that you cannot reach and rub the edge of the side of the tin under the Fruit. You could make it jagged if desired for easy cutting and could put some cloth in the tin to stop bruising. Gently lower it into a basket and there you have it. My friend and I were often seen going off on our bikes with one ready for scrumping.( it's a Kentish word for stealing fruit) and came home laden with cherries. Have a go, not the scrumping only on your own trees[?], Mary Finally as promised a courgette recipe, I was also recommended a courgette cake recipe but was told it was rather average so I decided to use a courgette lasagne recipe, which is surprisingly good. Courgette Lasagne Ingredients 450g/16 oz courgettes 1 aubergine 3-4 tbsp extra virgin olive oil 1 kg firm, ripe tomatoes, sliced 2 cloves garlic, chopped 2 tbsp balsamic vinegar 10-12 fresh basil leaves, torn Pinch salt and freshly ground black pepper 2x125g/4½ oz low-fat mozzarella cheese, sliced 150g/5¼ oz fresh lasagne sheets 100g/3½ oz freshly grated parmesan, or similar vegetarian hard cheese 1.Slice the courgettes and aubergine into diagonal slices. Heat a ridged grill pan, brush the slices with olive oil and grill for several minutes each side until chargrilled, then remove. You'll have to do this in batches. 2.Preheat the oven to 190C/375F/Gas 5. Brush the inside of a large baking dish with a little oil. Place a layer of sliced tomatoes (about one third of the total) on the bottom, slightly overlapping. 3.Next, layer with half of the courgette and aubergine slices. Sprinkle with half the chopped garlic and one tbsp balsamic vinegar. 4.Scatter over half of the torn basil leaves and season with salt and pepper. 5.Layer half the mozzarella slices on top, then cover with half the lasagne sheets. 6.Continue layering with the rest of the ingredients, ending with a layer of tomatoes on top. Sprinkle over the parmesan. 7.Cover with foil and bake for 35-40 minutes. Remove the foil and bake another five minutes until the parmesan's golden on top. If that doesn't cut it, chickens adore a large courgette split down the centre. While I have been out in the Suffolk countryside either watching the harvest being bought home, taking a tour around one of our many successful firms or just enjoying lunch in one of the many pubs and cafes which we are lucky to have, I have caught sight of a distant jet or helicopter from one of our region’s air bases. In the month of September I feel it is fitting to remember the brave men and women who took part in what has become known as the “Battle of Britain". The “Few” as they were to become known after Winston Churchill’s famous speech fought and died over the skies of Suffolk to defend our long held traditions and freedoms. The old airfields which are hidden away behind hedgerows and fields of wheat remind us of the ghosts of the past. On September 15th, Battle of Britain Day, I remembered those courageous young men. Parliament is back from the summer recess though as a Minister the red boxes have never stopped arriving from London! It was much more pleasant to be able to deal with them at home rather than at my desk in Whitehall. Life in Suffolk has continued at a busy pace, I have been lucky enough to visit many of our excellent local village fairs and fêtes. I have thoroughly enjoyed catching up with many old friends and meeting new ones. I have attempted to guess the weight of cakes and knock down coconuts on the coconut shy, neither very successfully I might add! Being back in London from Monday to Thursday sees me dividing my time between the Department of Health, my Westminster office and of course the chamber in the House of Commons. Interestingly most of the day to day work of Parliament is conducted by the Select Committees. While the chamber of the Commons may appear empty, the committee rooms in the Palace of Westminster will be filled with MPs conducting enquires or scrutinizing legislation. Until I joined the government as a junior health minister I was a member of the Health Select Committee. There is a Select Committee for each government Department, though some can cross departmental boundaries. The committees have a minimum of 11 members and MPs vote for the Chair of the majority of the committees. Their role is incredibly important, holding the government and outside bodies to account. Recent examples of Select Committees at work have been the investigation into the BBC, and the role of the Banks. As autumn begins I hope you have all had the chance to enjoy the glorious summer and now look forward to the remainder of the year in the run up to Christmas. I hold regular constituency advice surgeries locally to help people who have problems. If you think that I may be able to help you, please contact me on 01728 685 148, or email me via www.drdanielpoulter.com. If you could spare some time to help deliver my advice surgery leaflets I would be most grateful, they are a good way of letting as many people as possible know a surgery will soon be taking place in their area. Even delivering to just a few houses is a great help. If you can help, contact me by email at daniel.poulter.mp@parliament.uk or phone my local office on 01728 684 834
