We welcome you to join us as we celebrate the harvest from the field, garden or orchard. It is a sobering thought that everything we have, the basic gift of human life and all we eat or use to create the items we use each day are God’s gifts to us. In addition we humans are given intelligence and abilities to use the Creator’s resources for our benefit and pleasure. Part of being human is the ability to say “Thank You” - perhaps for a gift or a kindness shown, with so many reminders around us at this time of year it is good to say ‘Thank You Father God’. The refrain of an old hymn gives very good advice: ‘Count your blessings, name them one by one. Count your blessings see what God has done. Count your blessings, name them one by one, and it will surprise you what the Lord has done’. As we count our blessings and appreciate all that we enjoy we have the opportunity to consider helping others. This year we are supporting two very worthwhile Christian charities: the local Food Bank and Tools With A Mission WAVENEY FOOD BANK The bank distributes food to local people in need, if they can produce a voucher issued by a local health professional. Can you help by providing any of the following? Tea, coffee, dried milk, tinned soup, vegetables, fruit or baked beans. TOOLS WITH A MISSION In many countries of the world people have few skills, little education and no means of earning a living. A switch from aid dependency to self-sufficiency is impossible without help. TWAM helps by collecting and refurbishing tools and equipment no longer used in the UK and sending them abroad. All types of electric or hand tools for use by carpenters, mechanics, builders, electricians and plumbers are required together with sewing machines, typewriters, computers and much more. Please visit www.twam.co.uk Please bring your gifts to our Harvest Service or drop gifts off at the Baptist Church. If required please call and we will collect from your home. Thank you for helping us help others. Contact: John Ling 388751 (Church Elder) Jackie Hughes 384112 (Church Administrator)

A Message from The Curate Dear Friends & Neighbours,
Have recently moved into Fressingfield I was aware of the changing season seen in the fields and the landscape. I have loved watching the crops ripen and the corn turn golden, and then to see the transformation of the fields as bales of different shapes standing as sculptures in the newly cut fields - only to be replaced within days by the ploughed earth with its wonderful rich colour. That with those amazing Suffolk skies and sunsets, which have been glorious. Being somewhere new has enabled me to see with new eyes the beauty all around... but already I’m aware, a couple of months on, as I busily drive either to church or to meetings, I’m no longer noticing as much. My focus is just on getting to my destination. A few years ago God showed me that life wasn’t all about the destination. It’s very much about the journey. If we only focus on the destination, we miss much of the beauty of life all around us. By taking time, by slowing down, we are able to appreciate so much more of the beauty and the people and the life all around us and we see things with new eyes. Psalm 19 tells us “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands;” and in its beauty God’s creation speaks to us of His love and care for us. We are all on a journey, life’s journey and that journey will be different for each one of us. Perhaps you’ll join with me and try to slow down and try in the busyness of life to keep looking up, to see God’s creation and through it to see life with new eyes, seeing His love and His care for each one of us. Enjoy the view! God Bless, Cathy

Stradbroke Parish Council
The Clerks Report
Next meeting of the Parish Council in the Community Centre on Monday 12th October at 7.30pm I would like to introduce myself. My name is Odile Wladon and I am the newly appointed Clerk to Stradbroke Parish Council. This is my first role working with a Parish Council and I am very much looking forward to learning more about the role as the weeks progress. I attended my first Council meeting on 14th September and have been asked to include a few items in my report. Firstly, I have received a complaint about Dog Fouling in the Shelton Hill and Willow Close area, I would kindly ask all dog owners to please clear up after your pets. Councillor Flatman will be arranging for a member of staff from Mid Suffolk District Council to come along and speak with dog walkers in the near future. The bench on the pavement outside the church yard needs to be replaced. I would be delighted to hear from any individual, local group or business that would be interested in donating a new bench, a plaque could be attached to it to show your generous support of the local community. The Parish Council approved the ordering of two open noticeboards for use by the community. These will be made of oak with stainless steel sheets and magnets provided to secure any notices that the local community may wish to display. All outstanding planning applications have been granted approval by Mid Suffolk. With only one new application to report being the removal of a spruce tree at the Pink Bungalow. This was approved by the Parish Council. If you notice a street light that is not working, please let me know I will inform Suffolk County Council. It would be helpful if you could supply the street name the post is on and if possible the official number which should be on each post. My contact details are : Mobile: 07555 066147 email: stradbrokepc@outlook.com Address: Mill Hill House, Church Lane, Wickham Skeith, Suffolk IP23 8NA Thank you. Odile Wladon Clerk to the Council

Life in the Legion—The Royal British Legion (Stradbroke and District Branch) The High School was transformed into a seaside summer theatre when the branch hosted a seaside Summer Show. The show had the theme “Relive the Relief”, celebrating the 70th anniversary of war in Europe and the Far East. The Hall was full to capacity with an audience who were able to avail themselves of hugely discounted tickets, made possible by local benefactors who sponsored the show in order to make it affordable and accessible to all. The entertainment was provided by Nigel Boy Syer and Olly Day with special guest singer Maria Willis from Norwich and the Colchester Pipes and Drums. The prize draw, run by John and Jill Graham, raised over £700. Prizes were 13 themed hampers, prepared by Penny Stanford, and a top prize of £50 donated by Rosemary Warne who was MC for the evening. Refreshments were Pimms and delicious shortbread made to an undisclosed Royal recipe by Dr Patrick Thompson. The Branch thanks everybody for their help on the night including the Royal British Legion Bikers Branch and the Diss 1070 Squadron of the ATC who gave invaluable help on the night. The guest speaker at the midday September monthly branch meeting was Lt.Col.(Retired) Chris Taylor from Shipdham, (Norfolk) his subject being “The Gurkha Welfare Trust”. It was a most interesting talk and he was joined by other Gurkha Officers Major Doug Crooks at 94 the oldest active member of the branch and Major Chris Davis MBE the Diss Royal British Legion Branch Treasurer. Branch member Raymond Cole thanked the speaker for a most interesting talk on behalf of the 20 members and guests present. Michael Burton thanked all who had helped in the recent concert which had been a very successful event in particular the organiser Joyce Cooper together with Rosemary Warne, Joyce Baker and Penny Stanford, the first committee he had served on with all ladies! Branch Treasurer Bernard Mills gave reports on the concert and Branch Balance Sheets. The next branch meeting will be on Thursday, October 8th. to be held at Laxfield King’s Head, starting at 11.30 am when the guest speaker will be Major Rosemary Warne, MBE, DL. Members, please attend if you are able. Michael Burton (Chairman)
W.I. We welcomed Andrea Davies, our area advisor, to our September meeting. She explained the role of the committee and urged members to consider putting themselves forward for election at the AGM in November. Our speaker for the evening was Peter Banham, who’s topic was “Old Sayings and Origins”.He gave each member one or two cards with well known sayings on and asked us to read them out in turn, give the meaning and then asked us to guess the origin. Did you know, for example, that “putting a spanner in the works” came from the early days of car production by Ford in America? Apparently, the coffee breaks were infrequent and when the workers on the line wanted a rest, someone would “accidentally” drop a spanner into the machinery, causing a halt in proceedings until a mechanic had located the problem! “Money for old rope” had us all puzzled. Peter explained that many years ago, when sailors were due to go on leave, the old frayed pieces of rope that had been replaced were handed out, so that the men could sell them and make themselves some extra money. It was all very entertaining, and when Prue Rush gave a vote of thanks, she reminded us that Peter had asked for a contribution towards the St Elizabeth Hospice in lieu of a fee, and asked members to make a small donation. Next month we have a make‐ up artist giving a talk and demonstration; the competition will be a vanity mirror. Carol Darling
Stradbroke Over 60s On 6th August, we held a Musical Quiz organised by Dougie Chittock with his vast variety of tunes. This was very entertaining. The overall winner was Val Eriera. We then had one of our special teas provided by the members. Lots of treats as always and enjoyed by all. At our next meeting, we celebrated Peggy Summers 100th birthday, we raised our glasses and all drank toast to her along with a lovely cake provided by the family. What an achievement! Well done Peggy. In September we had a coach trip to Bury St Edmunds, once again the weather was very kind to us. After doing a little shopping and finding somewhere for lunch, most of us finished up in the Abbey Gardens sitting in the sunshine amonst the lovely array of flowers. Our October meetings will be on Thursdays the 1st and 15th in the Community Centre 2pm-4pm. All will be made welcome, you do not need to have reached the big 60. We would love to see you. Our Annual Sale and Coffee Morning will be held on Saturday October 17th from 10am-12 noon in the Community Centre. Lots of bargains, cakes and produce, nearly new bric-a-brac, toys, Christmas cake and drinks, raffle, card tombola, gifts, grand raffle and more. Look out for our posters. Joan Grimes

Stradbroke Primary School We hope that you have all had a restful and successful summer break. We are already enjoying the new school year. As always we have a busy time ahead with many events and activities. This term we are welcoming many new pupils and their families. Mrs Keeble has taken up her new teaching post in Class 2 with Year 2/3 children after training successfully with us last year. She will be assisted by Miss Muttock who is working with us this school year as a Graduate Intern. In our new Class 5, we welcome Mrs Ferguson who will be training on the same programme as Mrs Keeble did last year. This term also sees the official beginning of our federation with All Saints Laxfield Primary School. Both schools are now part of the All Saints Church School Federation. This will have no impact on the day to day running of the schools, we still share Mrs Barrow as Executive Headteacher but we now have a joint Governing Body working to guide and support both schools. You may have also seen in the local press at the end of last year Miss Legood won the “Excellence in teaching award” at Suffolk County Council’s Raising the Bar Awards. She continues to co-ordinate performing arts in our school and watch out for our fantastic choir at events. As we go to press children in Year 4 and 5 from both schools are currently on a joint residential visit to the Horstead Centre in Norfolk where they will be participating in activities such as canoeing, low ropes, tunnelling, bush craft, climbing and many other activities. There are many exciting events planned for this term including a Gardener’s World event where amongst lots of exciting activities we will be creating an outdoor growing area with a special mural. There is so much to look forward to and we would like to welcome you to an event too: Stradbroke Primary School Farmer’s Market, Thursday 8th October- 2.30-4pm Please come along to our Harvest Farmer’s Market! We are hoping to make this a special event and welcome anyone who would like to come and sell their produce. Please come into school or phone us to book yourself a table. Do you make jam, have you a tree full of apples you don’t know what to do with? We will be making, growing produce in school to boost supplies. Already we have plants, local honey, cookie making, jam and we would like much more! Come along! Melanie Barrow, Executive Head Teacher
Stradbroke High School GCSE Results 2015 We are delighted that a stunning 72% of our pupils achieved the benchmark of 5 or more A*-C grades, including English and Mathematics. It is incredibly pleasing that the hard work and commitment of pupils, the dedication of staff and the support of families has made this possible. Nearly 30% of all entries achieved grades of A or A*, and of particular note were the outstanding results of Mathew Lynch (10A*, 2A), Holly Read (8A*, 2A), Joe Harris (8A*,3A), Jo Capp (5A*, 5A) and Hollie Hunter (5A*, 4A) Stradbroke High School, Press Office Jill Whatling
Everyone Active Everyone Active Stradbroke Swim and Fitness Centre recently ran a 2 hour Aquaerobics session raising sponsorship for 4 colleagues who are taking part in a Spartan race on Saturday 19th September. Also FANTASTIC NEWS!! Total amount raised in this years Swimathon was a massive £10,035.40 for Marie Curie Cancer Care. Stradbroke Archive and Records Association - SARA On the 25th September please remember Company Serjeant Major EDWARD PIPE who was killed in action 100 years ago on the Battlefields of Loos. Edward Pipe was born in 1884 to Richard and Lucy Pipe. His father was a Farm Labourer (1891 census) and they lived along the Laxfield Road. By the 1901 census return Edward was 17 and employed as a 'horseman' at Farm House, Barlow Green. At some time between 1901 and 1911 Edward enlisted in the Bedfordshire Regiment and by the time the 1911 census return was taken he had become a Corporal. At that time he was unmarried and as yet we cannot find any record of a later marriage. The 1911 census return also tells us that Edward was one of 7 children - one of his siblings having pre-deceased him. He is remembered with honour at the Loos War Memorial, with the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and is also remembered with honour on our village War Memorial. Following SARA obtaining a copy of the WW2 Roll of Honour, we have also tried to commission a copy of the very important 1840 Stradbroke Tithe map but are informed that this map held by SRO is incomplete and in very poor condition which means no copy can be made until the conservators have worked on it. At this time the work is not on their schedule which is a real shame. Our understanding is that there were three original maps and we will continue to try and trace the other two. Stradbroke is very fortunate to have the key to this map – this being the original work of a Mrs Allen (possibly the wife of Rev.Allen) dated 1854. This too will be deposited with the SRO very soon. New Archive Days! After a number of enquiries requesting individual appointments to undertake Family History research and specific house/village related research we have decided to trial this approach officially! We will continue to run our successful Archive Days but will instead do these ‘open to all’ Archive Days every three months, to allow us to offer 1:1 appointments in between. To book an appointment go to www.stradbrokearchive.org.uk or leave a message in the Library addressed to SARA! The next Open Archive Day will be in November in celebration of National Explore Your Archive Week. Details next month! Ann Readman, SARA
Radio Stradbroke As the curtain falls on Summer, September sees the curtain fall on “Summer Music Nights” on Radio Stradbroke. 1st Fressingfield Scouts Welcome back: I don’t know where the summer went, but welcome back to the autumn term – it is great to welcome lots of new families to the Fressingfield Scouting family – I hope that your young people enjoy their time with us. Additional help is always welcome and if you can spare any time at all please talk to a leader about how you can help us continue to grow and develop. We also need to ensure that we have a regular stream of funds coming into the Group, so thanks for your support now and into the future. Top of the Pops – Fundraiser and social event: We have a wonderful evening of entertainment for adults, booked on Saturday 26th September at 7.30pm – tickets on sale now . Please reserve and pay any section leader, Emma at the Hoxne Post Office or at reception at Mendham Primary and St Edmund’s, Hoxne Primary Schools or from myself. As we say goodbye to Great Tower Camp in Cumbria, planning is now well underway for a sunnier camp in the New Forest, Sussex. Activities planned are: a ferry visit to Brownsea Island (the home of scouting), hiking in the New Forest, archery, bouldering, crate stacking and zip wires, a visit to Paulton’s Theme Park and even a session snowboarding! HQ update: Our planning application for the new Scout HQ is now in for formal public consultation, it’s really important that we get the community behind us. We all recognise that any development in our villages can bring out passionate views on all sides. I and the Executive committee are convinced that our application for a Scout HQ and a moderate size housing development is sensitive to the area and in line with the broader needs of the community. Concert at Wilby Coronation Hall Award winning folk duo, Blackheart, will be playing a fundraising concert at Wilby Coronation Hall on Friday October 2nd as part of their ‘Beautifully Acoustic’ nationwide tour. Chrissy Mostyn and Rick Pilkington, who together comprise Blackheart, play a dazzling array of instruments during their live gigs including piano, electric percussion, electric mandola, bowed guitar, vintage synthesisers and something called an omnichord. After three successful albums and over 600 concerts from Sydney to Glastonbury, plus TV and radio exposure, Blackheart feel like a band on the rise. Their folk-based, modern acoustic music has a distinct sound which has attracted plaudits from many within the music business, including former Genesis guitarist Steve Hackett who described it as “beautiful, powerful and inspiring.” Organiser Ian Taylor is excited about bringing such a prestigious act to the village; “The name Wilby translates from the Old English as 'ring of willows' which makes it a very apt location for a gig which will weave the modern and traditional into a music lovers delight.” Tickets for the evening are £10 (under16’s £6). with profits from the gig going directly to the Hall fighting fund. Call 01728 638357 for tickets and more details. Maggie Berry

The Friends Of All Saints. An Error has Occurred... Two articles were missed from The Stradbroke Monthly last month. They were submitted underneath another article that did go in and the team accidentally missed these articles underneath. In response the Secretary of FOASS has written a letter for publication which we include under their articles, along with our response. The Editorial Team, The Stradbroke Monthly
Food with Friends For Fun and Funds A new fund raising initiative has commenced in Stradbroke to raise money for badly needed repairs to All Saints Church. The basic idea is that each month participating couples undertake to entertain 3 other participating couples to a meal at their own cost, whilst charging each guest £15 per head. Guests would provide their own wine. This way £90 would be added to the fund each month, making £1,080 each year. Meals could be a formal dinner party, a BBQ, a curry evening, fish and chips etc - the list is endless. It is, of course, not a competition, just an excuse to get together with other like-minded people for an enjoyable evening. Two of these evenings have already been held and both were unanimously declared to be a great success. If you would like to join in the fun, please email jennieandcolin@googlemail.com
Royal Raffle HRH the Prince of Wales has kindly donated a Highgrove Cuvee of Champagne together with a pair of oak and silver coasters to the Friends of the Church. These items are being offered as the prize in a limited ticket raffle of 100 tickets at £5 each. This is a unique opportunity for someone to own a "piece of royalty". With a limited number of tickets for sale your chances of winning are higher than in a conventional open raffle. All monies raised will be used for repairs to All Saints Church. Tickets will be on sale soon and for any further information about the raffle contact either Margaret Norris (384492) or Carol Darling (388098). Margaret Streeter "FOR PUBLICATION" - sent by Jennie Jones, Secretary 'Friends Of All Saints Stradbroke' "Sirs FOASS There is a group of hard working residents intent on raising badly needed funds to help preserve our Historic Church who need as much help and support from the village as possible. It is a shame therefore that The STRADBROKE Monthly Magazine failed to print 2 articles submitted in time for inclusion in the September edition, but managed to print articles regarding surrounding villages. Whilst I have nothing against Hoxne, Brundish, Wingfield etc., this is STRADBROKE! The articles were intended to advertise a Grand Raffle of Champagne and Silver mounted coasters, and the Eating with Friend initiative, both of which would very much help swell the funds. Could the Magazine please remember the name on the front Page - Stradbroke, and I believe, one of the reasons for starting the magazine many years ago, was to inform the village of forthcoming activities and events. Jennie Jones Secretary FOASS Editor"
Response by The Editorial Team, The Stradbroke Monthly How did we respond? We instantly apologised via email to the submitter of the articles (Margaret Streeter) when she brought it to our attention and then subsequently to Jennie Jones, following her communication above. We have of course, published both articles and the communication from the Secretary of FOASS in this magazine edition. We have also published this page on The Stradbroke Monthly Page at www.stradbroke.org.uk where it has received 99 independent views at time of printing.

Stradbroke Festifull 2016 The dates have been set for next year – Saturday the 25 June and Sunday the 26 . More information nearer the time but please put the dates in your diaries. Each year we try to improve on previous years and we’re always looking for new ideas and attractions that are affordable and will appeal plus we’re always looking for new volunteers to help. This year a number of committee members are standing down having been great stalwarts for many years. They will be missed and we need to find new people with fresh ideas and boundless energy to join us and ensure that next year’s Festifull goes ahead. Please give this some serious thought, you don’t have to commit to be involved in every aspect of the event. Whether your interest is in ideas and planning or just helping over the weekend you will be most welcome. Roger Turkington 384 248 or rogerturkington@suffolkonline.net th

News & Views New Playground Equipment for Stradbroke Some of the play park equipment in our village dates back to the 1970s. The poor state of our play parks has been a topic for some time and it is clearly time for some updates. A small working group of the Parish Council led by Ellie Wharton, are investigating what can be done to bring it into the 21st century. We have some ideas on how new equipment can be financed, but need to be sure what should be retained, replaced or added to. In order to apply for grant funding we need to demonstrate the need, and who better to advise us than the children and their parents themselves. The primary and secondary schools have been approached and kindly agreed to help engage the children in a creative way to identify what they would like to see. We will also be distributing a questionnaire for parents with children at the schools in early October. This questionnaire will also be available in the library and online at www.stradbrokeonline.org.uk simply by selecting the Neighbourhood Plan link. Ellie Warton, Oliver Last, Don Darling

Stradbroke Cricket Club Thankfully, Stradbroke Monthly is not in colour, as the Cricket Club “End of Term” Report, would be splattered in red pen, with the words “Must Try Harder”. But as we all did when presenting our school report to our parents, a positive spin is put on it. Last year The Vikings won 6 matches, finishing bottom. This year they won 6 matches & finished fourth from bottom, which had they always had 11 players to call upon, would have been at least 8 wins. The A Team were relegated with just one win. Player availability was such an issue that we will withdraw the A Team from the League in 2016. This should make the Vikings more competitive, and free up Sundays to play some friendlies & Academy matches, specifically to give youngsters experience of adult cricket. With membership falling, the end of season awards is a low key affair. Thanks to The Queens Head for accommodating us. The award winners were: Vikings: “Player of the Year” – James Gilbee, “Leading Run Scorer” – Olly Bickley(268), “Leading Wicket Taker” – James Gilbee(41). A Team: “Player of the Year” – Owen Morgan, “Leading Run Scorer” – Alan Barker(146), “Leading Wicket Taker” – Owen Morgan(14). The Flag Deck Trophy for “Clubman of the Year” went to James Gilbee for his dedication, enthusiasm, & almost 60 wickets in a season, while Martin Cuthbert won “Champagne Moment” for his Lazarus like recovery from what looked like a career threatening injury! St Elizabeth Hospice connecting care October 4-11 marks Hospice Care Week, a national campaign to help raise awareness and celebrate the work of local hospices, like St Elizabeth Hospice, improving life for people living with a progressive illness. The theme for this year’s Hospice Care Week is ‘Connecting Care’ and throughout the week St Elizabeth Hospice will be telling people about the innovative ways in which they connect with local people, including through community engagement work. They will also highlight examples of their compassionate and personalised care, connecting with people wherever they are. Mark Millar, St Elizabeth Hospice’s acting chief executive, said “A lot of people have misconceptions about what hospice care is and this national week allows us and other hospices across the country, to educate and inform people about what hospice care really is and dispel some of the common myths.” 5 myths dispelled: 1. Hospices are not just a place people go to die. Patients can come to a hospice for outpatient appointments, day care, therapy, pain relief respite, as well as for end-of-life care 2. Hospice care is not just a building. Around 80 per cent of St Elizabeth Hospice’s patients are cared for at home or in the community. The hospice centres its care around an individual’s needs which means offering specialist support wherever it is required 3. Hospices don’t just care for people with cancer. St Elizabeth Hospice improves life for people living with any progressive illness, such as motor neurone disease, multiple sclerosis, Parkinsons, heart, lung and kidney disease, as well as cancer 4. Anyone from the age of 14 upwards can be cared for by St Elizabeth Hospice – the hospice is currently developing its young adult service, working with young patients aged 14-30 to improve their care to meet the needs of younger people 5. Hospices are not scary or sad places. They are a happy place filled with laughter where people are supported to live the rest of their lives as fully as possible To get involved read the local paper, visit the St Elizabeth Hospice website and follow them on Facebook and Twitter. Keep up to date with what they’re doing during Hospice Care Week and learn more about the amazing care and support they give to local people – and how you can help. Visit www.stelizabethhospice.org.uk or find them on Facebook by searching for St Elizabeth Hospice, and on Twitter @StElizabethHosp Sophie Johnson, Marketing Assistant

Autumn is truly on its way, with crisp mornings, glorious days (when it’s not raining) and spider webs making wonderful patterns all around you. Not a moment to be slack though. Due to the cold spring, harvest is still abundant, even though these cold nights will soon stop or slow any more growth. I feel like a little mouse hastily gathering things into storage before winter strikes. Now is the ideal time to dig over those beds and add plenty of manure to help break down the soil and add nutrients and life to the soil depleted after months of roots sucking the goodness out. There is no need to double dig every year. In fact I have never done it on the allotments. Clay is laying a couple of spades depth down and I really do not want to bring this up to the surface. I prefer just to add to the soil and work it over with my fork. It is at its most friable at the moment and the couple of past years of adding manure is really paying off. There is not much to sow at the moment, but if you have a cold frame you could start some sweet peas off. Although from trials it makes no difference whether you sow them now or in March, it’s your choice. Autumn planting onions can be put in now. I had a good crop of Japanese onions last June that stored quite well and gave me onions a month before the spring sown ones matured. Broad beans can be sown in November to give an early crop as well. You have to keep the rodents and birds away from them to achieve this though. The best bit about autumn is going through all your seeds and chucking out of date ones away as well as poor keepers such as parsnip and carrots. Then sitting down with a brand new seed catalogue and deciding which varieties you are going to choose this year, the same or a brand new one promising great taste and bug resistant. Almost as good as when they arrive on your doorstep, then it’s a countdown until you can sow them. Happy digging Helen Pleasance
Finding the best home care services in Suffolk Finding the best home care services in Suffolk - for yourself or a loved one - can seem like a confusing and difficult task. However, it's actually quite simple. Start by contacting the Social Services Community Care department for a Community Care Assessment. This will highlight whether you qualify for financial help with your home care needs. If eligible you can choose between having Social Services organise your home care or selecting your own provider. This is done through Direct Payments or a Personal Budget. The advantage to arranging your own home care is that you gain the freedom to choose the best home care company for your needs, as opposed to having one selected for you. Private or Independent Care Agencies provide a range of support, including: Help with getting up, Washing, Dressing, Meal preparation, Cleaning, Help with taking medication, Shopping, Going out, visits or appointments. It's always a good idea to always check that the Care Agency is registered with the Care Quality Commission (CQC) who ensures that they meet regulatory standards. Private Care Companies and Agencies can be found by searching online, visiting industry websites such as www.homecare.co.uk or by word-ofmouth recommendation. Websites are a perfect way of finding out what services a Care Agency provides. Don't be afraid to call the care agency and talk to them honestly about your needs. A home visit can be arranged to put together a care plan which will outline the care that you will receive. Usually it's possible to organise care requirements to start within a week. Organising care is relatively easy when done privately but timescales and levels of bureaucracy can vary when taking the route through funding via Social Services. Remember: Carefully check the reliability, quality and standards offered by any home care agency you contact. A good agency will always be more than happy to respond to any questions or queries you might have. The energy sector has been radically transformed over the past 30 years. Britain’s national and regional energy monopolies of the 1980s have been replaced with an energy market. But an energy market is only valuable if it empowers the people it serves - its customers. In recent years, energy prices have been rising faster than inflation, and this has put the operations of energy companies under ever greater scrutiny. Consumer engagement in the energy market has been historically and stubbornly low, mainly as a result of highly complex energy tariffs and a lack of energy pricing transparency a lack of transparency which has even infiltrated many price comparison websites which purport to champion consumer rights. The ‘big six’ energy companies and the sector regulator Ofgem have been slow to respond to tackle these problems. As a result, there is much to be done to restore consumer confidence, and to reinvigorate the energy market and bring genuinely good deals and lower prices to energy customers. As MPs we have to deal with a lot of email campaigns. We try our best to respond to them but when hundreds of identical emails hit your inbox it can be time consuming and tiresome particularly for our overworked parliamentary staff. Mass e-mail campaigns can be destructive in their use of extreme and emotive language; too often irritating us rather than persuade us to act. So I was pleasantly surprised when I heard about a campaign launched last week by 38 Degrees. Alongside a consumer collective called The Big Deal they have launched The Clean Energy Switch. The first ever mass switch to clean energy. By using the collective bargaining power of thousands of people they aim to negotiate a great deal for clean energy with green energy companies. Thereby making green energy affordable for millions of families. There’s no doubt there is public support for this initiative. Polling shows that the vast majority of people want to go green as long as it doesn’t cost them any more than what they pay now. And 45,000 people signed up to the Clean Energy Switch within just 48 hours. Leaving aside whether or not cuts to the renewables industry in recent months are right or wrong, this campaign should be commended. It’s a bottom-up, constructive approach. It’s not calling for government to do something to deal with a problem but rather it’s taking action to do something itself by empowering the energy consumer through the power of collective bargaining. This is a consumer-led free market movement, and mass movements of custom have a lot of power to change the market in a positive way. 38 Degrees and The Big Deal should be praised for such a constructive and positive approach. It’s for all these reasons that I’m publicly backing the Clean Energy Switch and am urging my constituents to sign up and get behind it too to help the environment and save money on their energy bills at the same time. Letters to the Editor “Sirs FOASS There is a group of hard working residents intent on raising badly needed funds to help preserve our Historic Church who need as much help and support from the village as possible. Could the Magazine please remember the name on the front Page - Stradbroke, and I believe, one of the reasons for starting the magazine many years ago, was to inform the village of forthcoming activities and events.” Jennie Jones, Secretary FOASSeditor PEGGY'S 100th BIRTHDAY “Thank you very much to all who donated to the charity for St Christopher's Hospice for M.S. We raised £640. Also Mum dreamed of receiving 100 birthday cards, not thinking it possible, but she made it, you can't beat friends and relations for making dreams come true. She had a great Party. Thanks to everyone. Pamela Wolfe “
