What’s in the Pipeline for Stradbroke?

...The Library The current position is that a much more positive approach has been made by Suffolk County Council. However there are a number of issues still to be resolved, but at a recent meeting of the Corporate Property Programme Board of Suffolk CC “it was agreed that the Parish Council (or a body created by them e.g. charity/trust) can have the Old Court House. SCC has statutory responsibility to provide a library service the transfer offer will be either a trial short lease or move straight to a long lease. Covenants will be placed on the property that space for a library function must continue to be provided and remainder of premises must be used for or in support of community based functions. SCC will not upgrade the premises, however it is prepared to enter negotiations to provide a commuted sum in lieu any commitment for future running costs and the PC will be free to put this towards upgrading the premises. We would also encourage PC to investigate alternative means of finance (e.g. grants) which might contribute towards these costs.” Stradbroke has also agreed to be a pilot library for more local involvement in running the library. We are joining with Debenham and Eye as a cluster to consider how we can support each other in taking on some of the management functions. This is encouraging news but there is a lot of detail yet to be examined and work to be carried out to see how we can finally resolve the issue. Nonetheless it seems to be a big step in the right direction!

...The Schools The Diocesan Board of Education approved proposals submitted by the Stradbroke Pyramid partnership to convert to academy status as part of an innovative chain of academies comprising the Stradbroke and Business Enterprise College and its six feeder primary schools (Stradbroke, Wilby, Fressingfield, Laxfield, Worlingworth and Mendham). The proposal envisages each school converting to academy status in its own right with an overarching "umbrella trust" to provide central services for schools such as a Business Manager. For the five Church Schools (Stradbroke Primary, Wilby, Fressingfield, Laxfield and Worlingworth) diocesan approval was required as they are church schools. All of the schools have agreed in principle to take part but each individual Governing Body will now need to consider if they want to pass an Academy resolution and apply formally to the DfE to convert to Academy status and set up the Umbrella Trust. If this happens and the DfE approve the plans then conversions could begin to take place from January 2012…watch this space!

...The Conservation Area On Monday 10th October 2011, at 6.30 p.m., there will be an exhibition at the Community Centre where you can view and discuss Mid Suffolk District Council’s draft conservation area appraisal for Stradbroke. Mid Suffolk DC has a duty to review conservation area designation from time to time and the review was last carried out in 2000. Come along and make your views known – our conservation area is a very important part of our village, not just for it’s historic connections but for the look and feel of the heart of today’s village and how it could look and feel in the future …come and join us and have your say!

Harvest Report As predicted our Harvest Supper proved to be great evening of good food, good fun and Christian message. Following an excellent supper we were entertained by Peter Holloway in his unique style as raconteur, singer and musician. An evening we all enjoyed and a wonderful starter to our harvest celebrations. We continue to assist, and would invite your help as we support charities which care for people less fortunate than ourselves. ‘Tools With A Mission’ On behalf of this Christian charity we are collecting trade tools, equipment, typewriters and sewing machines which after renovation will be sent to the developing world. Full details and list of requirements are available. THANK YOU FOR HELPING US HELP OTHERS! Forgive and Forget A couple were celebrating their golden wedding, and the wife was asked the secret of a long and happy marriage. She answered, “On my wedding day, I decided to list ten of my husband’s faults which I was always willing to overlook. I reckoned that I could live with ten”. When asked which ten were listed, she replied. “Well I never actually got round to writing them down, so whenever he annoys me, I just say to myself, ‘It’s a good thing for him that’s on the list’”. A follower came to Jesus and asked, “Lord, how many times should I forgive my brother up to seven times”? Jesus answered, “I tell you, not seven times, but seventy times seven”. Suffolk Family Carers We are an independent charity, our services are free! A Family Carer is defined as any age; ‘looking after’ a relative, friend, partner, parent/s or child/siblings who cannot manage without them because of illness, age or physical, learning or mental health difficulties. Many Family Carers, care for more than one person. The main concerns are when caring impacts on very part of the Family Carers’ life. It is then, especially, that support is needed which is more focused, planned, and often outside the home, with a complete break from the caring role. This we know sustains situations, otherwise there would be many more people cared for in residential homes, hospitals and other establishments. Please call our Helpline for more information; 01473 232679 or visit our website; www.suffolk-carers.co.uk

Dear Friends, The Church is standing tall and welcoming at this time. As you cast your eyes down on this page, others are preparing to climb up the one hundred steps to the top of the tower to be ready to abseil down the west wall; do come to watch, or even to take part, or encourage others to do so. It is an amazing experience, both to raise money for good causes, and to feel the thrill of leaning back on the secure rope, and then descending with your feet on the stones until you reach the ground, to cheers & “That’s great!”. .As I write, having been inside All Saints, I say “Well done” to all who are filling our festival days with colour, music and history to remind us of past achievements, and of future hopes for a better world. Last month I invited you to turn back towards the church; in October we request the pleasure of your company for the Harvest Thanksgiving which begins on Thursday 6th when the Primary School children, staff, family and friends will fill many seats for their service. They will bring produce from the garden and the larder to add to our display of gratitude to God for all his good gifts as we decorate the church for the services on Sunday the 9th at 8.00 am and 6.30 pm. What has been brought into the church for this joyful purpose will be taken out on Monday the 10th, if you come to the Sale to raise money for Christian Aid, to help the victims of famine, drought and floods overseas. Please be generous in giving and buying. Tuesday 18th is St Luke’s Day, and God’s love shown in healing and caring for the sick and infirm will be our theme on Sunday 16th at 8.00 am & 6.30 pm. Please tell me if you wish to be included in our prayers. Sunday 30th October is two days before November 1st, All Saints Day, our parish church’s Patronal Festival, and all are invited from our four churches in the benefice to Holy Communion with hymns, a sermon and prayers for the ministry in our parishes so the churches may continue to stand tall, with the door open to give a warm welcome to all those who come inside for a service or a time of quiet prayer. With all good wishes, David Streeter. All Saints Church Cleaning, Thursday, 13th. October, 10.00 am onwards. (Note change, due to Primary School Harvest Service) Margaret Streeter

Stradbroke Parish Council

The Parish Pump!

Parish Council Meeting 12 September 2011 NEXT Public Forum: PARISH COUNCIL Luke Heydon addressed the meeting on the subject of the recent public meeting MEETING: to discuss allotments. He was pleased to report that there was a very definite 10th October interest in the project moving forward and people were keen to help with the As7.00pm sociation if the project goes ahead. He had been in contact with the Allotment Associations at Mellis and Earl Soham and those villages’ allotments had been fully At the subscribed straight away, and Earl Soham had had interest from outside, so he was Community Centre sure that there would be a greater demand than current numbers of interested parties indicated. Planning: There were no applications for consideration at this meeting. No results of planning decisions had been made by MSDC since the last meeting. There were no other planning matters for discussion. Other business: MSDC’s Budget Challenge was discussed and the Council would be submitting a response although the information on which to base replies to the questions was considered to be inadequate owing to the lack of financial data. It was noted that the Waste Site at Brome was welcomed and that the staff were very helpful. Do remember that there is a charge for non-recyclable waste so it makes sense to take a full car or trailer load of either recyclables or landfill so that you do not end up paying £6 to leave a very small bag of landfill waste. NEWS ITEMS DIGITAL TV SWITCH OVER: Some transmitter changes had been made earlier than the predicted November switch over date. If you are experiencing difficulties with tuning it will be necessary to call a TV engineer for assistance. ALLOTMENTS: The Parish Council was pleased with the response at the public meeting held on 31 August. The Council agreed to put funds aside to assist with start up costs, if needed and was continuing with its negotiations on the provision of land. It is still not too late to put your name on the list for a plot...contact the Clerk. LIBRARY: Work is ongoing and Stradbroke is to be part of a pilot in conjunction with Eye and Debenham. Suffolk County Council is conducting a consultation on the future of mobile library services in the county. A questionnaire is available for completion on the website: www.suffolk.gov.uk/sld or a paper copy can be obtained from the Clerk. The closing date for responses is 16 October 2011.

October Meeting: The next meeting of the Parish Council will be addressed by Patrick Taylor, MSDC and Babergh DC Conservation Architect, who will speak about the conservation plan for the village. This meeting will commence at 7pm – all members of the public are very welcome to attend and will be able to view the display from 6.30pm.

The next meeting of the Parish Council: 10 October 2011 at 7pm Clerk to the Parish Council: Carol A Smy tel: 01379 384679 email: clerkspc@thesmys.com **please make non-emergency calls to the Clerk between 0830 and 1800hrs** **Monday to Friday only**

Life in the Legion The Guest Speaker at the September Meeting was Lieutenant General Sir Christopher Wallace KCB DL who had travelled all the way from the south coast to be with us. He gave us an excellent talk about his famous relation Lieutenant General Sir George Augustus Quenton, and Lt Col Roger Gwyn led the vote of thanks. During the business part of the meeting I mentioned in the Tribute the death of George Fisher from Laxfield who at 98 was our oldest member. Branch Treasurer Roy Neil gave his monthly report, and donations were voted to be made to The County Benevolent Fund, and The Pedal to Paris to sponsor member Simon Harrison who had taken part. His sponsorship is up to £1,270 with more to come. The Branch will be represented at a Suffolk County Meeting at Stowmarket on October 2nd, and also at The Diss Branch Festival of Remembrance on November 11th. At the meeting Sandra Bromley, the county secretary, gave a report. The Branch hosted an H group Meeting at The Queens Head PH on Thursday 8th September, and 21 members attended from the Stradbroke, Hoxne, and Fressingfield Branches. As the Chairman I welcomed Vice Admiral Sir Jeremy Blackham from the Fressingfield Branch to his first meeting of H Group. Nick Eade, The H Group Secretary and County H Group Representative, gave a report as did all the Branches present. All the Group Officers were re-elected for a further year, and the meeting discussed the future of Eye Branch. Joyce Cooper spoke about this year’s Christmas Tree collections, and Simon Harrison reported on his ‘Pedal to Paris’. A draw was held and it raised £51. A vote of thanks to Stradbroke for hosting the evening was proposed by Ben Symonds, The Fressingfield Branch Chairman. The Branch was well represented at George Fisher’s Funeral in Laxfield. The service and great tribute to George was led by Branch Chaplain, Rev’d David Streeter, and he was assisted by branch member Rev’d Ron Orams. Our sympathy goes out to his family at this sad time. The Guest Speaker at the October Meeting at 11.30am on Thursday 6th October will be Peter Warren from Harleston, and he will talk about a visit to Dubai. Michael Burton – Branch Chairman.

Womens Institute We started our September meeting with a minutes silence to remember Marjorie Sharp who died recently. Marjorie was a long standing member of our institute and a member of the Ward family, well known in the village for having run a grocery and drapery store for many years. Marjorie was a very talented lady, whose needlecraft was chosen to represent our region at a National Exhibition held at Tatton Park. She also had a great love of music. Members who knew her well described her as a gentle and kind hearted lady who will be much missed. From sadness to sweetness for our speakers for the evening were Mr. and Mrs. Harding from ‘Just Truffles,’ who own their own shop in Harleston called ‘The Pod’. Members heard how from a long discussion on a warm Summer’s night in 2006 the idea was born to start a family business creating hand- made truffles. We heard all about the making and creating of the beautiful chocolates, and yes, then we tasted them. Absolutely gorgeous!!! A visit to Harleston is definitely called for. Caroline Traylen gave the vote of thanks and Sue Gray won the competition. Remember please our ‘Table Top’ sale at our next meeting. ‘Shades of Autumn’ when we are requesting any garden produce that you can spare, or anything made from that produce. i.e. Jams, chutney’s ,pies and puddings. Anything at all will be very welcome. Many thanks. Gill Bird

Stradbroke Primary School visit us at www.stradbrokevc.suffolk.sch.uk Welcome back to another academic year! It is lovely to be sharing news from Stradbroke Primary with you again. We begin the year with lots of introductions as we welcome so many new pupils and families to our school. I am always so impressed with how quickly our new children settle and they already feel like established members of the school. It was lovely to see all the children in our new uniform on the first day of term. All staff have commented how much smarter the embroidered new logo looks and the new fleeces are lovely too. We have had a great start to the new term and so far it has already been a busy one! There are many events to look forward to this term. We are shortly going on our first ever residential visit for Year 4 and 5 to the Horstead Activity Centre in Norfolk. We are running a variety of after school and lunchtime clubs for the children this year including Football for Key Stage One, Key Stage Two boys and girls, French, Art, Board Game club and Elite Teaching are also offering a Breakfast/Gymnastics Club and a Dodgeball Club. Stradbroke Primary had an incredibly successful year in 2010-11, culminating in our Outstanding OFSTED inspection. We have been asked to share our good practice with other schools and have been asked to give a presentation for the local authority on “What makes an Outstanding Curriculum?” As you will have noticed the fantastic changes the pre-school have made to their play area. Inside the building looks wonderful too. Can I remind parents with children aged 2 and a half to four that they can make use of the pre-school we have within our school grounds. Please come and speak to staff at Tiddlywinks if you are interested in a nursery place for your child. We are of course always delighted to show new parents around our school too. Stradbroke Library Well done to everyone who completed the Circus Stars Reading Game this summer. We had our presentation party for certificates and medals on Tuesday September 13th after school and a good time was had by everyone. It was pleasurable chaos as usual with the kids (and adults) enjoying the party tea. We run a book group for the over 50s on the second Thursday in the month at 2:30 pm at the library. If you like to be challenged in your reading and enjoy lively discussion, come along and join us- ask in the library for details. The next meeting is Thursday October 13th. Everyone is welcome. On Tuesday mornings at 11.15 am we run Bookstart Rhymetime for young children 05years. Come along with your baby, toddler or child and enjoy a fun packed singing session. The Suffolk Foundation Opens Comic Relief Grants Programme to groups in Suffolk. The Suffolk Foundation has been awarded local funding from Comic Relief to provide essential grants to groups across the county over the next two years. The Local Communities grants programme is open to community groups, resident associations, community centres, credit unions, social enterprises and community interest companies. Grants of £1,000 to £10,000 are available, and projects should be run by people directly affected by the issues they are dealing with. Priority will be given to small, locally-based groups or organisations in areas of disadvantage that have a clear understanding of the needs of their community. Stephen Singleton from The Suffolk Foundation said: “We want these grants to empower local people, enabling them to create lasting change in their communities. The Local Communities grants programme will be offering grants of £1,000 to £10,000, and we will be looking for applications that show how a small amount of money will make a big difference. We welcome applications for a range of initiatives, from community sport activities, to community employment projects, to food coops.” The Suffolk Foundation has a simple and straightforward application process and welcomes applications from established organisations, as well as new groups and projects. Full details of the Local Communities grants programme can be found on the website www.suffolkfoundation.org.uk. The deadline for the first round of applications, which will have an emphasis on community sport projects, is Monday 3rd October 2011. Judi Newman

Suffolk County Council Budget Consultation You may be aware that Suffolk County Council launched its budget consultation on 12 August which runs until 12 December. The council is already looking at how it can save money through staffing re-structures and reducing back office costs. We will continue to look for further savings in these areas, but this may not be enough given the scale of savings needed. To help us meet the challenge, we want to hear your views on the services which matter most to you. We would also like to hear about your ideas and suggestions on how the council could save money. Please visit our website at: http://www.suffolk.gov.uk/WeAreListening and fill in our survey. Copies are also available through libraries or you can answer the survey questions over the phone on 0845 6031842 (Monday – Friday 8.30am – 5pm)

Fair Play to Mid Suffolk Mid Suffolk are celebrating after bringing home the ‘Fair Play’ award from the 2011 Redrow Homes Suffolk Youth Games. In July, 90 young people aged between 9 and 15 represented Mid Suffolk by competing in eight events in athletics, basketball, badminton, cycling, hockey, tennis, squash, table tennis and tag rugby. The ‘Fair Play’ trophy is awarded to the team who truly embrace the true spirit of the games. This year it was awarded to Mid Suffolk for the excellent fair play throughout all the sports in which the young people played. The day of the games also saw a number of other top success’s for Mid Suffolk including the boys hockey team winning gold, bronze positions secured by the tag rugby and squash teams and five members of the basketball team invited to join the Ipswich Basketball Academies, Gifted and Talented programme. With just under a year to the 2012 London Olympic and Paralympic Games, the Suffolk Youth Games offers young people a small taste of what it is like to take part in a largescale, multi-sport event. Carol Clarke, Sports Development Officer at Mid Suffolk District Council said: “The Youth Games and the London Olympic and Paralympic Games have the power to inspire young people to grow as individuals and achieve their potential through sporting endeavour.” In the led up to the games, eight week coaching programmes took place in all of the featured sports involving 160 participants, introducing young people to regular sporting activity in community clubs providing on-going development opportunities beyond the games. Building Work, ‘Chantala’, Wilby Road I am wanting to update everyone as to what is happening to the bungalow named Chantala on Wilby Road Now that Richard, Marianne and family have moved to their “new” house in Stradbroke and we have planning consent to redevelop the site I am arranging to have the existing building removed by contractors as soon as possible so that the site is made safe. We are improving access on to the site and blocking up the southernmost driveway access as part of the process. We will then be returning at a later date once other projects are complete. Steve Lee.

Stradbroke Cricket Club I have lost count of the number of times the cricket season has ended in brilliant sunshine, regretting the fact that we could still be playing in October, 2011’s Indian Summer is no exception. The usual end of term feel has given way to a situation where, as I write, with one game left, the A Team need to win with 18 points to maintain the clubs proud record of never having had a team relegated in 25 years of league cricket. Having languished in the bottom two all season, it would be a great achievement. The B Team have mirrored these sentiments. Having been in the promotion places all summer, they ran out of steam in their last match to finish fourth. The future of the Vikings looks to have taken a decisive turn with an application to join a regionalized Two Counties League on Saturdays awaiting acceptance. This may well be the most significant move forward for Stradbroke CC in a decade. A line will be drawn under 2011 on Saturday 29 October with their Annual General Meeting, followed by Presentation Evening at the Community Centre. Fingers crossed, Essex (& hopefully Englands) next fast bowler, Reece Topley, joined by his dad, ex Essex bowler Don Topley, will be this year’s guests, offering an interesting father & son perspective on cricket at a professional level. It all starts at 6:45pm. Entry is £5 for adults, £3 for juniors, £12 for a family of 4. Help us celebrate all that is good about the club. HOWZAT FOR ENTERTAINMENT When Julie Thompson suggested a variety evening, a lukewarm response was met by a determination on her part to make it a reality. Quite how it all came together on a September evening maybe should not be analysed, but it did, and in excess of 60 villagers & family thoroughly enjoyed themselves, in the process raising almost £350 for the Cricket Club and the James Grigg Youth Cricket Trust. Thanks are due to Julie for her vision, to Marty Norris for broadcasting the event on Radio Stradbroke, & to Nigel Brown, forgoing the fun to run the bar. Particular thanks go to the acts who risked their reputations to perform on the night: Richard Pierce-Saunderson, reading from his soon to be published novel, 10 yr old Alex Pierce-Saunderson delighting us with her tap dancing routine, the Ryan Family, supported by Jack, Tommy, & Steve’s brass ensemble, filling the hall with music, Josh Franklin-Mann for his beautifully crafted cricket based songs, and Florence Vane & Emily Self, whose captivating musical talent continues to blossom. Last, and definitely least, thanks to my co-compere Tilly Heydon for not only keeping me in check, but also proving that the secret of good comedy definitely is, timing! Can we do it again? Thanks to the players who competed and special thanks to Colin Revel the captain for ensuring that all matches will be completed. The club nights on Wednesdays have been well attended this year, in fact the numbers of members playing are the best for many years, and the Junior Club on the Wednesdays have also been well supported, thanks must go to Andrew Bedwell who gives up his time to run the Juniors. The Juniors througherly enjoy the games and advice that Andrew gives them and one can see the improvements in their tennis. John Bedwell Chairman.

Stradbroke White Hart Bowls Club Waveney League Division 1. It was almost a replica of last year with a great first half to the season followed by a not so great second half. We eventually finished in 4th place, just missing the third spot by a single point. In the Waveney League individual cup competitions, our mixed triples team of John Ingle and Roger and Julie Ward, reached the final but they lost to the trio from Stradbroke and District BC. At least the title ended up in Stradbroke so well done both teams! Club Competitions. Our remaining club competitions were played out on Finals Day earlier this month and the results were as follows: Ward Trophy - Roy Wilkinson (R.U. Les Ruth), French Trophy – Ralph Chambers (R.U. Barry Ransome), 2 Wood Singles – Colin Grosvenor (R.U. Mike Grigg), 3 Wood Singles – Val Ransome (R.U. Mike Smith), 4 Wood Singles – Mike Grigg (R.U. Colin Grosvenor), Pairs – Malcolm Oakes & Will Coe (R.U. Mike Smith & Barry Ransome). The green played very well this year after a lot of work by the “Green Team” so many thanks to them and to the Committee who manage the club so well. Also to Mike Ransome our captain and chief organiser and not forgetting our fundraisers and everyone who supported our events. Finally thanks to Max and Alison of the White Hart, for their support and for the best after match food on the bowls circuit! Mike Readman

Stradbroke Youth Football Club The Club has started this season in good shape and we are building on a sound financial footing, generously supported by a donation from the Parish Council which has enabled us to purchase goals for our new pitch at SBEC. This has enabled our U12s to play in the League, as pitches and goals of the proper dimensions and construction are a “must have”. The support from the Parish Council and SBEC has been invaluable so many thanks to them. The season has started and we will inevitably struggle against some of the more established teams to start with but we are showing promise and have already had some very good team and individual performances. Under 10s – The age bands at the very junior levels are quite strict and although we have the numbers we didn’t have enough in any specific age band to make up a junior squad for the League. Fortunately we can mix junior age groups for friendly games so we have a number of matches lined up for the season Any 7, 8, or 9 year old will be very welcome. Turn up to training on Thursdays at 5:30pm and you can just join in. Under 12s – The opening fixtures were against two of the stronger teams in the division. We put up a real challenge in both games, just running out of steam at the end to concede late goals which didn’t reflect how well we played. That was particularly true of our first game when despite having only ten players available, we were 2-2 at half time and then hit the woodwork three times before the opposition broke away and scored. After that a couple of mistakes in a tired defence left us disappointed with a 2-5 defeat. Bright spots from both games were excellent performances from new players Woody Walters and Jac Garrard and in our first game against Stowmarket, a real contender already, for goal of the season, from Matthew Knight! Under 14s – During the close season, we lost 2 good players but fortunately recruited 2 more equally good players in Jake Harvey and Chris Brown. The season started with a bang against Honnington where we scored the fasted goal in the league – 7 seconds from kick-off. 6 passes and Richie Courtney popped it home. Mathew Lynch also scored 2 cracking free kicks from 25 yds both going in the top RHC. Unfortunately the opposition scored a few as well and we went down 6-3. Our second game against Walsham was a very even affair and although conceding 2 early goals Steve Cook scored 2 great opportunist goals and was within a wisker of his hat trick. Tom Sergent also scored from 30yds with a looping shot over the keeper. Final result was 3 – 3 which reflected a very even end to end game. Under 18s – Our new team for the season led by Steve Sach is in a very mixed division with some high scoring games indicating such as 20-0, 16-0, 16-2. Stradbroke lost their first game 14-0 to Sudbury tigers but won their second 7-3 against Sudbury Panthers and currently lie mid table. The league is clearly going to be divided into 2 groups this season and our aim is to at least come in the top half of the table. Mike Readman & Don Darling

Letters Poems to the Editor ‘Peacocks’ For Jayne Yates In response to your comments I felt obliged to write my part, As Stradbroke is my home, a place very close to my heart The tip at Eye has been shut and rubbish neighbours accrue so bonfires have to be done as a necessity and not just to upset you. The peacocks can be a nuisance and we should feel for the affected few But sadly cats cannot be trained or told, where they should go to the 'loo' The sound of 'life' is expected, when living with others near Unless we live totally alone, only then will the sounds disappear!!! So yes, you have offended some as we like living here a lot and most of the people of Stradbroke are nice 'UTTERLY SELFISH FOLK' we are NOT!!!

By G Johnson.

Peacocks Peacocks are beautiful, yes it is true, but they make a mess, and a lot of noise, too. From India’s countryside, they were brought here - their sounds are not ‘natural’ to England, I fear But their presence enhances our village’s life, and the pets that we treasure should not cause us strife And nor should good neighbours, who help us indeed, with shopping and driving and medical needs. So, if you’re resentful, please try to forgive – for Stradbroke’s a place where I’m thankful to live! By Stella Bryant

Gardeners Notes After a number of years of talking about allotments in Stradbroke it looks like we have taken a large step forward. At the beginning of September Gerald Jenkins arranged a meeting to discuss the possibility of having allotments, the meeting included a slide show of a possible site and also the new allotment site in Mellis. This was followed by a talk from a lady from the Allotment Association, who is a great advocate of organic growing. She spoke very enthusiastically about allotments (by enthusiastically I mean a little scary), and how much could be gained from them. Most people seemed similarly impressed and encouraged, and the members of the parish council who attended were able to see the genuine interest. Later in the month I went along to the Parish council meeting where a vote was taken in favour of supporting the establishment of allotments in Stradbroke, this is fantastic news and the next step is to find a piece of land that is suitable. A couple of sites have been put forward and are being looked into at the moment. Hopefully it won't take too long, I just wanted to say thank you to the Parish council for their support and to all the people who have come forward with offers of help for when it all gets going. All being well we will be looking to set up an Allotment Association as soon as a site has been agreed, anyone interested please contact myself or Gerald. The allotments won't just be for people who have a plot, the association will be open to anyone, and benefits include cheap seeds, potatoes, onion setts etc. Depending on the size of the site there maybe the chance of establishing village orchard which could include a wild flower meadow. Experts could be invited to give talks and demonstrations and the village schools could use it as a teaching resource. Lots to look forward to. September is a great month for fruit, particularly this year, I have already made some plum jam, but, as ever I left it a bit late to pick the plums and they were over ripe and didn't set so well. A list of apples suitable for particular parts of the country has been produced by the RHS, having looked at it I have picked out some that I have tried and would recommend. 'Discovery' is a good early dessert apple and should be eaten straight away (also makes a lovely tart juice). 'Katy' is a good cox alternative and is less prone to canker. Blenheim Orange, Worcester Pearmain and Laxtons Fortune are all good dessert apples. For cooking apples I personally always go for Bramley Seedling because it stores so well, but the RHS recommend 'Reverend W. Wilkes', 'Newton Wonder' and 'Lord Derby'. As for pears, 'Concorde', 'Conference' and 'Beurre Hardy' seem to be the most reliable for this area. Although there are many fantastic pears they like a relatively sheltered position, so if you are looking to plant other varieties choose your position carefully. Jobs to be getting on with in September and October, keep dead heading dahlias and roses to eek out the last of the summer. Save seed from plants such as delphiniums, poppies and verbena to sow in seed trays. Foxgloves produce lots of seed and germinate very easily, I tend to cut off the dried seed heads and broadcast them where I want them to flower next year. Bulb planting can be done now as well as garlic and autumn onion setts for next year. Rake up the leaves and compost or bag up for a good leaf mulch. Any plant that has had a leaf problem this year like black spot on roses or leaf miner on horse chestnuts rake up the leaves and burn, composting these leaves will spread the problem around. Before the winter sets in it is worth pruning your roses at least to reduce growth and stop them getting damaged by winds, particularly climbing roses as they produce long whippy growth. The main prune can still be done in January/February time. Try not to cut your lawn too short as it growth slows down, this will help it keep the moss at bay. ( advice that I often say but people still carry on cutting very low ). It is just about the last moment to trim evergreen hedges safely, such as box and yew before the weather turns cold. Enjoy what hopefully will be a nice autumn.

Happy gardening, Luke

I was delighted with the Government’s recent decision to award Suffolk over £11.6 million to deliver the high speed broadband that Ipswich and Suffolk deserves. I have written before about the importance of bringing a more reliable broadband service to Suffolk and, along with my fellow Suffolk MPs, have worked hard to ensure the concerns of those in our rural communities in Suffolk were heard by Government ministers. For too long now, local businesses, schools, and many residents in Suffolk have been forced to suffer slow and unreliable internet speeds. Suffolk has found itself on the wrong side of Britain’s internet divide, but thanks to the Coalition Government, this is about to change. The Government’s £11.6 million investment is backed with money from the County Council and supported by small and large businesses throughout Suffolk. The people of Suffolk, particularly those in our rural communities, will now be able to enjoy the same internet speeds as people in much of the rest of the country when the project is complete. In an age when many people communicate, bank and shop, and do business online, more reliable internet access will improve the everyday lives of people across our county. Over the past six weeks I have been dividing my time between my work as your local MP, looking after the interests of people of Central Suffolk and North Ipswich, and working on the frontline as an NHS hospital doctor in Accident and Emergency. Returning to the wards has reinforced to me the importance of having MPs with real life experience, and there is nothing more real life than working in frontline NHS medicine. As a doctor and as an MP I know that there are big healthcare challenges facing Suffolk. Above all else, we must face the human and financial challenge of looking after our growing older population. People often ask me why is our Coalition Government reforming the NHS? Of course reducing unnecessary waste, bureaucracy and pointless form filling, and directing more money to patient care is an important part of the reforms, but the reason that they are right for Suffolk is because the Coalition’s Health reforms are taking the first vital step in tackling the biggest healthcare challenge that is facing us locally, which is to provide dignity and improved community care for older people.
