Their main area of work is in Ukraine where they help and support a variety of individuals and organizations including medical facilities where the government only fund a small percentage of drugs required. Caring medical directors have to resort to asking for help and Hope Now often assist in specific cases. Jon left with a promise of our prayers and a gift of £500 for their good work. We are expecting to host a choir from Ukraine who will be singing at our church in November, please look out for further details. Every picture tells a story. On the days when Jon had a sports match at school invariably he was later than usual getting home and his mum would be watching out for him. Mum never asked ‘Did you win or lose?’ - she met him at the door with congratulations or condolences for as she watched him coming up the path his demeanour would show quite clearly the outcome. Joy and excitement for victory, a sad slow walk to the door meant, ‘lost again’. Mum knew from the expression on Jack’s face for, ‘Every picture tells a story’. If we stop and look we find that every thing we see, picture, photo, or scene from the window tells us a story. For example, a painting by local artist the late Jack Welbourne tells us a story. In the background nestling among the trees is a local parish church, in the foreground are ridges of golden straw recently left by a combine. The quantity of straw suggests a bumper crop and the church reminds us that for generations the people who worked the land came and gave thanks to Almighty God. For harvest is a joint effort of man’s labour and God’s gift, for without sunshine, rain and correct temperature there is no harvest. These are God’s input as promised to us in the Bible and He has been faithful to His promise again this year. For every picture tells a story We invite you to join us as we say “Thank You” at our Harvest Supper and Harvest Service. Details contact John 388751 Jackie 384112 Malcolm 384797 Bev586731

Dear Friends, September will follow its usual pattern of services and fund-raising events, and we look forward to seeing you there. I very much enjoyed my Birthday Celebrations last week, though I am not sure how pleased I am to be seventy years-old! The Bishop has given me permission to continue as Rector for another two months as Harvest Festival is a good time to say thank you and goodbye, though it will be more like “see you later” as many of you know where we are planning to move from The Rectory in November, about four weeks after my last Sunday which is October 21st. All Saints Church Harvest Festival is in October, beginning with the Primary School Service on Thursday 11th, and continuing from Friday evening, the 12th until Monday 15th. There will be a programme of services and events over the four days, with full details in next month’s magazine, which, I hope, will bring many of you into the church, especially on Sunday evening, 6.30pm on the 14th, which will be the “Fare-well Service” with a final one the following Sunday at 9.00am for the regular congregation. The church is like as great barn or silo, such as those being filled at this time of year, and I am fortunate to have a miniature one of it – there I am inside – that I bought from Donny Bickers when he had an exhibition of his models, made from matchsticks and plywood, a few years ago. He has been busy since then, and there is more to see, inside the larger church, on Saturday and Sunday, 22nd & 23rd September, from 10.00am to 1.00pm and 2,00pm to 5.00pm. It will cost you £1.00 to come in, and more if you wish to buy a model. Watch out for extra details. Don’t forget that there is a chance to see many churches, outside and in, on the day of the Sponsored Bike Ride, Sat. Sept. 8th, 9am – 5pm – More info from The Rectory. With all good wishes, David Streeter. All Saints Church Cleaning – Thursday, 6th September, 10.00 am onwards. Margaret Streeter

Life in the Legion Instead of the monthly meeting regular attendees went to the seaside home at Gorleston of members Joyce and Brian Cooper. Twenty members and guests enjoyed a super lunch followed by activities and tea. The special guest was Bruno Peek, Her Majesty the Queens Pageant Master, who spoke about his special life. Member Roger Gwyn led the vote of thanks to our hosts and also to the speaker. Top of our list at the moment is the need to find a Poppy Appeal Organiser, as mentioned in last month’s magazine, to take over from Jeremy Higgins when he moves away from the village. I do hope that local volunteers will come forward to carry on this important task as The Poppy Appeal is the life blood of our organization. Membership. Member Gerald Breeze has very sadly recently died and we send our best wishes to his family. We are fortunate however to have taken on five members from The Eye Branch which has recently closed. The Branch congratulates Rev’d David Streeter our padre on his 70th Birthday. I have recently sent letters to all the PCCs in our Branch Area regarding what is available on the death of a Legion Member subject of course to the wishes of the family. The next meeting is on Thursday 6th September at The King’s Head Laxfield at 11.30am. The Guest Speaker will be Lieutenant General Sir Christopher Wallace KCB DL, and I hope as many members as possible will be able to attend. A photograph taken at the annual Summer Outing of Stradbroke Royal British Legion to the Norfolk coast. The picture shows left, Chairman of Stradbroke & District RBL Branch - Michael Burton shaking hands with the 'mystery lunchtime speaker' Bruno Peek MBE. Lunch and cream teas were organised by Penny Stanford, Jean Stacey. Alex Gwynn and Joyce Cooper. Bruno is an appointed pageant master to her Majesty the Queen, and recently organised the lighting of over 4,000 beacons throughout the UK and the Commonwealth. Michael Burton—Branch Chairman

W.I An evening of surprises could best describe our August meeting. We had the pleasure of welcoming Jane Collier, our new Chairman of SEFWI, to our meeting for the first time. Jane had joined us to make a presentation. In her opening address Dorothy having welcomed Jane, welcomed Ellen, visiting us from Wilby. As it is our policy to support local groups, it was agreed to send a donation to the ‘Good Neighbours’ of Stradbroke. This year we are giving a bursary for a member to attend Denman College the W.I. National Federation’s seat of learning in Oxfordshire. Or any other place of their choice. After applications, a draw will take place at our November meeting to decide the winner. It was then the turn of Jane Collier to make the presentation of The Felix Smith Bell and a certificate to Carol Darling and Jane Gemmill for making the stunningly beautiful hat which won its class at the ‘Suffolk Show’. After much applause it was time to welcome our speaker for the evening, our very own Sue Boon, who talked to us about ‘An African Orphanage’. With the aid of projected photographs she gave a very touching account of how she first, through a holiday in Kenya in 2010 became aware of the ‘Lioness Cubs’ Children’s Home in Kikambala. This was a home that took in orphaned and abandoned children, and gave them the care, love and security that would otherwise have been denied them. So moved by what she saw, she now works tirelessly, endlessly fundraising for the registered charity of which she is now a trustee. The lovely photographs of the children obviously so well nourished, happy and smiling, were both moving and thought provoking, and left members full of admiration for Sue and her fellow trustees. Trustees make 2 visits a year at their own expense to the home and every penny received by the charity goes to the children and their welfare. In thanking Sue, Dorothy said that we had all been touched by what we had seen and heard, and that we should all count our blessings. Carol D. then delighted us all by showing us a step by step guide via projection, to show how she and Jane had created the winning hat for the ‘Suffolk Show. It was then produced for us all to see. If there was an award for patience, they surely would have won it! The competition was won by Joyce Lee. Gill Bird

Friends of All Saints Church On Saturday, 29th we are holding a “Sumptuous September Tea” in the Community Centre, from 3.30 pm. There will be a delicious tea and light entertainment. Do please put this date in your diary, the strictly date for articles to be in means that I am not exactly sure of the price structure – I hope you will forgive me if I say, “Come along, and be prepared to pay handsomely for a lovely tea in aid of The Friends of All Saints Church. Tickets will be available very soon. Margaret Streeter (Press Officer)

Wingfield and District Gardening Club

The title of our visits “Gardens at their best” was very true! Beautiful vistas of colour and in the first garden use of established grasses that waved gently in the wind and often softened the edges of the beds. The pond had water loving plants at its edges and in the background a bog garden had been planted this year. The second garden had long wandering paths with delightful areas of grass, one of which provided the setting for delicious coffee and cakes. These areas were bordered by long borders of shrubs that were establishing themselves in what is quite a young garden with older plants around the house. Many thanks to their owners for allowing us to see them and gather ideas. Our next meeting is the AGM and quiz on 27th September at the De La Pole Arms 7.30pm. All welcome. For further information contact Caroline on 01379 384674

Have you ever had a sneaky desire to pull the odd pint or two? Well if you have then your help would be appreciated. The bar in the Stradbroke Community Centre is looking for volunteers to help out behind it, serving alcoholic and soft drinks at functions. Throughout some of the weekends in the year the bar is hired, along with the hall, for a large range of activities mainly on Friday and Saturday nights. The bar is run and organised by volunteer staff and we are looking to increase the pool of volunteers for future events. As I have mentioned, we are all volunteers so all you will receive for your efforts is your fellow helper’s thanks and appreciation for your hard work, but we are a friendly bunch so why not give it a try? If you are interested or would like more information about what is required please phone Tony on 01379 388454

Harleston Flower Club

The August Garden Meeting - the general trend of this summer's weather looked likely to threaten this event when the heavens opened in the morning with torrential rain. This proved to be a temporary blip and 40 members were delighted to be able to sit in sunshine and wander round and admire Carol's lovely garden at Cratfield. There was a copious array of delicious food provided by members and everyone seemed to have a second or third plate of something. The meeting for September 6th at 2pm at Wortwell Community Centre, Tunbeck Close, Wortwell, IP20 0HS will feature a celebration of the Club's 55th birthday with a presentation by Alan Smith of Emerald Anniversary. We will be having fizz, cake, a special Garden Hamper and £1 stall and much more. We look forward to welcoming past, present and new members for this occasion. For more details please contact Jenni on 01986 782377.

News & Views Huge success for textiles recycling scheme

OVER 20 TONNES of clothes have been recycled in the first week of The Suffolk Waste Partnership’s new textiles recycling scheme. Households across Suffolk should have now received an introductory pack containing two specially designed textiles recycling bags. To take part, residents simply need to put their old and worn textiles in the bag, tie the bag securely and place it inside the recycling bin on top of their other loose recyclables. By putting the bag at the top of the recycling bin, the council collection teams will clearly see it when they empty the recycling bin and leave a replacement bag. Residents are advised to contact their local district or borough council if they have not yet received their introductory pack. A recent analysis of rubbish bins in Suffolk revealed around 7,000 tonnes of clothing and textiles end up in landfill every year. This costs taxpayers more than £600,000 in disposal fees. It is this material that the scheme aims to capture and recycle. However, the SWP is urging residents to continue to donate to charity shops or their local textile banks where they would normally do so. Acceptable items are as follows: All clean clothing, shoes, boots, wellington boots, slippers, hats, scarves, gloves, bed linen, blankets, sheets, pillowcases, handbags, belts, clean underwear, curtains, towels, tea towels and stuffed toys. Unacceptable items are as follows: Dirty or oily items, duvets, quilts, sleeping bags, pillows, cushions and carpets. Suffolk County Council

Stradbroke Poppy Appeal

This a further plea for a volunteer to take over the organisation of The Poppy Appeal in Stradbroke and Wilby when we move away from the village. The volunteer will provide essential support to our serving and ex serving community, and will help to raise approximately £4000 locally each year to provide essential welfare and benevolent support. Please can anybody interested in taking over this essential task contact myself for further details as soon as possible as this will ensure that the hand over goes smoothly. The volunteer does not need to be a member of The Royal British Legion, and many of our existing collectors are not members. The organisation could be run jointly by a small committee under a nominated organiser to spread the task. Please contact Jeremy Higgins, The Chantry, Stradbroke, Eye, Suffolk IP21 5HG. Radio Stradbroke

My trawl through the brief history of ‘Radio Stradbroke’ last month has drawn comment, mostly favourable, but as I am quick to point out that I am just a pawn in this game of chess, and that there are many people who deserve some recognition for making it what it is today. Like most good ideas, beer was involved. Mike Readman told Marty Norris of his vision of Community broadcasting. Marty like it, and made it happen! James Hargrave lent his wide knowledge of IT to the cause, Claire Hargrave took on the role of web and graphic design, and as described last month, Radio Stradbroke evolved from a trial into a conscious effort to push back the boundaries of broadcasting. While the aforementioned used their technical know how, out of the woodwork came Michael Hugman, ‘Wally’ Ward, Wes Kent, Richard Pierce-Saunderson, Vic Spurling, DJ Dave, Josh Franklin-Mann, James Ling, & Owen Morgan, some with Disco or broadcasting experience, all with a love of music, producing their own shows, under the banner of the semi-legendary ‘Sunday Sessions’ as well as Bank Holiday specials, and of course’ ‘Martys Christmas Crackers’, a live Christmas Day show from Studio 1 (Marty’s Conservatory). Considering they have no fixed premises, it is a credit to the above that their work is polished & inventive. But it is far from an ego trip. Their efforts have raised funds for the East Anglian Air Ambulance, & the James Grigg Youth Cricket Trust, and have showcased local young musical talent. There is more to come. Next month: Sunday sessions are back. Look out for the schedule. Michael Hugman

Stradbroke Library Expansion Plans as IPS Takes Control Stradbroke Library marked its first day open under IPS control on Thursday August 1st as plans to expand the library received a welcome boost with news of a grant from Suffolk County Council towards renovation costs. The Library and Courthouse working group is to meet in the next few weeks to plan the work. The library currently occupies only part of the downstairs of the Courthouse building and the proposed changes will install doors allowing the library to expand into the downstairs of the Courthouse. The downstairs area will also be used for the proposed Courthouse Community Cafe and as a small venue for cultural events such as book readings and to showcase local musical talent. The plans also include more computers and wireless Internet access as well as a small retail area offering greeting cards and similar items. The idea is to involve the community in a very practical way in the project and several people already have paintbrushes, screwdrivers and the like, ready to volunteer their services. Anyone eager to help is encouraged to get in touch via email at volunteer@stradbroke.org.uk For Stradbroke, the transfer of the library and courthouse building to the IPS provides an opportunity for local volunteers to focus on widening the use of the building with the knowledge that the library service is secure. It also means at this stage, we do not need to concern ourselves with issues such as building leases.

Stradbroke Library Manager Maureen John who is also a Parish Councillor and member of the Library and Courthouse Working Group Library Manager

Maureen John is excited by the plans and sees her role as co-ordinating the volunteers to run what will be a much wider “community hub”. It does look like we will end up with an expanded library service and a greater use of volunteers being clear that we are not to replace in any way the work done by paid library staff but to add to it. For a small library like Stradbroke with volunteers already committed to a number of community projects the fact the IPS is handling staffing and buildings issues a real boon. It means we don’t need to worry about these things and can get on with our plans to expand the service. Cllr James Hargrave, Stradbroke Library Working Group

Stradbroke Cricket Club

Time is supposed to be a great healer. It seemed such a long time since the sun shone that we had forgotten what summer was like! Whether it is the sun on our backs, or riding on the back of the feelgood factor from the Olympic Games, it has brought out the best in the Cricket Club. It is as much the characters themselves as their relative abilities, that make the Club what it is. Free from the stresses of exams, home from far flung Universities, the game is firstly a social gathering, and secondly a sporting contest. Witnessed at a recent wedding, Stradbroke Cricket Club is the catalyst for life long friendships that may otherwise not even have been passing acquaintances. This brotherhood brings the best out of the team, amply attested by four straight victories. The Vikings have dug deep to beat both Easton & Sudbourne Hall, games they would have lost earlier in the season. The A Team found themselves languishing in the relegation zone, but rather than panic, they turned in two collective bowling & fielding displays to contain Castle & Martlesham, when it really mattered. It would be wrong to single out individuals, these have been team efforts, but the clubs two longest serving players reached notable milestones in the last week. David Allum became only the second player to make 600 appearances, while Michael Hugman is the second player to score 7000 runs for Stradbroke. There are many young pups within the club, but old dogs of war have their days too, which is probably the secret as to why Stradbroke is the club it is. Keep supporting us! Michael Hugman

Local Gardeners Notes Finally we have had something of a summer: temperatures into the 30s; it can't be bad! The Olympics even got away with almost dry weather, which was rather surprising. We managed to get to the hockey games and really enjoyed ourselves. We actually got to see New Zealand versus Holland and Australia versus Argentina. We gaily waved our flags for the appropriate nations and saw plenty of goals. We then watched other events on the big screen, along with what seemed to be hundreds of thousands of people, most of whom were sitting on the lovely plants! I saw some of the landscaping around the park, which was very impressive. It will take a lot of looking after, even if it gives the impression of being natural and not too designed. With the space available they were able to use large groupings of single varieties of plants to great effect. The only problem that I can see is that it was designed to look good in August, so may be a little dull for eleven months of the year. September is a great month for gardening. There is still a little warm weather left, but things are also looking forward to next year. Bulbs can be planted from now on for the next 6-8 weeks, though I tend to leave it until October when the ground has softened a little. When herbaceous perennials have finished flowering in the autumn they can be split to create new plants to give them a new lease of life. This works with most things other then grasses and tender plants, which are best done in spring. Fruit trees have been a bit variable this year with pears and plums being worst affected. There were a couple of late frosts just at the wrong time that damaged the developing fruitlets. I'm sure my Dad used to tell me something about protecting your plums from the cold! Yet again we have been very lucky with our mulberry and it has produced huge amounts of fruit for only a small tree. Mulberries are probably my favourite fruit, with a flavour something between a blackberry, a raspberry and an apple. I am looking forward to having the space on my allotment to grow lots of fruit as well as cut flowers for my wife! I have spoken to a few people this year who have suffered from blight ontheir potatoes. The best thing is to cut the tops off as soon as it's spotted; the potatoes can then be lifted over a period of time, as long as they are not left too long. It is also worth saying that planting potatoes near a green house is not a good idea if you grow tomatoes: the blight spores tend to get blown in easily and will devastate your tomato crop. With the hot, dry weather we have had recently don't be tempted to cut your grass too short, as you want it to be a strong as possible before the winter. If you are feeling up to it, you can also take the opportunity to rake out the thatch and old moss from the lawn: this will do you and your lawn the world of good. Forking the lawn in the compacted places is also worthwhile. I was lucky to go up to Snettisham on the north Norfolk coast a few weeks ago; it is actually the only part of west-facing coastline on the east coast, which is a slightly odd concept. We went to the beach in the morning as the tide was coming in and saw thousands of birds flying together, creating constantly changing shapes. This probably has a name, but it was certainly quite something to see. Keep on enjoying your garden while the weather lasts. Until next month, happy gardening. Luke

“Like many residents, I was very distressed to hear about the recent temporary closure of the Post Office in Stradbroke. Local village services such as the post office, pub and store form the lifeblood of our rural communities in Suffolk, often going above and beyond in supporting and bringing residents together. They are particularly important for vulnerable elderly residents or those without their own cars, who would find it difficult to travel to neighbouring villages to access the key everyday services, advice and support that post office stores provide. That is why I have taken up this issue with Post Office Ltd and have been working closely with Stradbroke Parish Council, to fight to ensure that the post office in Stradbroke is retained or replaced for villagers as soon as possible. I am confident that an alternative site will be found for a post office in Stradbroke, and will be monitoring the situation closely in the weeks ahead, so that residents can again have access to the vital services they require from their local post office. The Government recently set out its plans to radically reform the way we support and care for our older people. For too long, our frail older people have suffered when attempting to navigate our unwieldy social care system and I am pleased that the Government is getting to grips with reforming the system of social care so that frail elderly people are treated with the respect and dignity they deserve. I have written before about how improving health and social care services to provide dignity in care for older people is the biggest human and financial challenge facing Suffolk. Not only are people living longer, but they are doing so with multiple medical conditions, such as heart disease, dementia and diabetes. Meeting this challenge will require our NHS and social care system to move from being a crisis management service to becoming more joined-up and community focused, with the emphasis being on prevention rather than cure. Suffolk is already leading the way in caring for our elderly, and I have seen some excellent schemes such as the Wickham Market Community Training Project, which trains volunteers to provide shortterm respite care for local family carers when they need a break from their care duties. The measures announced by the Government place individuals at the heart of the care and support system and prioritise better joined-up care between GPs, Social Services and the NHS. An extra £300 million will be invested to support closer working between health and social care services, on top of the £2.7billion that has already been made available up to 2015 for the NHS to support social care. As well as providing for better coordinated care, the Government’s social care reforms will also ensure that our hardworking carers are given the support they need to balance their caring responsibilities with their own lives. For the first time, carers will be entitled to a carers’ assessment to identify and support their needs, while £400 million has already been invested by the Government to fund breaks and respite care for carers. It is not right that elderly people are forced to suffer the indignity of having to sell their own home to pay for the costs of receiving care, and I am pleased that the Government has also committed to ensuring that no one will be forced to do this to pay for their care in future under the universal deferred payment scheme. Our frail older people deserve to be properly looked after under a health and social care system that doesn’t just react to crises, but prevents them from happening in the first place by delivering community-focussed care. I am glad that the Government has recognised this and is taking the action needed to fix our broken social care system so that it better supports our older people.“ For more information please see www.drdanielpoulter.com Do you read Dr Poulters column each month?
