Radio Stradbroke is back for the Festive season, with two internet broadcasts in December. The first broadcast will be a festive request show, led by Marty and his team of happy elves - James, Huggy and Wally. Log on to Stradbroke.org.uk on the 23rd of December from 10am to 10pm to hear (and see via the webcams) the show, which will be broadcast live from Marty’s studio Grotto! Donations for dedications will be in aid of the East Anglian Air Ambulance. As an extra special treat, Marty will be broadcasting on Christmas Day morning, through Stradbroke.org.uk, playing his favourite tracks for everyone to enjoy whilst they are preparing Christmas dinner and for those with small children, recovering from the early start! Log on for more information, and to see the elves ‘limbering up’ for the broadcast at Stradbroke.org.uk!

Track Santa on Christmas Eve! As the children in Stradbroke prepare for Father Christmas on Christmas Eve you can track his progress across the globe on the Internet! For over fifty years on Christmas Eve NORAD (North American Aerospace Defense Command) has told stories of how their powerful tracking systems such as the Distant Early Warning Line (DEW Line) detected Santa Claus leaving the North Pole to deliver his presents. Using their website, you can monitor the hourly updates from the control centre, and video from “Santa Cams” to track where in the world he is passing through! For all children both young and old, this is an activity to enjoy together throughout the day on Christmas Eve! The most important thing to remember though is when NORAD track Santa over France, it's time to get to bed!! Follow the link from Stradbroke.org.uk, or go directly to www.noradsanta.org/

All Saints Church Fund Raising Committee The Annual Xmas Bazaar held at the “Chantry” was not very well supported but raised £207.75 so many thanks to Anne & Jeremy Higgins for the venue. Thank you for all the lovely cakes donated for the November 10th Cake Stall, which raised £104. The next and last event for 2007, with Christmas in mind, is another cake stall on December 8th and we are praying for a fine day! I must congratulate the ladies as we have now passed the £4,500 mark with one more event to come. Barbara Moore, after the end of the year, has decided not to stand on the committee and we will all miss her valuable input and assistance in the many events we will hold in 2008 although, she has offered to help when she can. We have lost no time in finding a replacement in Julie Ward who has kindly agreed to help us; welcome aboard Julie! We hope to start the year with a lunch on January 7th to help us build up for 2008. Mary Ellis

The Rectory - Tel: 384363 Email: davidstreeter@suffolkonline.net Dear Friends, The Festival of Flowers and Music opened on Tuesday and goes on for a week, as I told you last month, with an amazing Concert on Saturday 24th at 7.30 pm. Please don’t miss this wonderful chance to hear your favourite songs. Songs of Praise is on Sunday 25th at 6.30 pm, with much-loved hymns, and Tuesday is only the evening: 7.30 pm for a local young musicians’ Rock Concert in the church. We will also be praying especially for a solution to the Avian Flu crisis (all too seasonal!). Christmas Services begin on Advent Sunday, Dec. 2nd, at 10.00 am when, please, bring a gift for children and families who will greatly appreciate something extra at this time of year. The Advent Carol Service at Athelington is at 4.30 pm that day, with the Benefice Choir, followed by refreshments. The Candle-Lit Carol Service is at 6.30 pm on Sunday 16th, with glorious lights, sounds and voices to create a joyful atmosphere in which to hear and sing the Story of the Incarnation of Jesus Christ. Christmas Eve is a Monday. My newspaper tells me that Upside-Down Christmas trees have been tipped as this December’s must-have item! Ours in the Church will be the right way up and lit for your delight, as the illuminations fill the church’s darkness with this sign of God’s love for his world, and your best-loved carols will accompany the re-telling of the Journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem for Jesus’ Birthday. Christmas Day begins before midnight on Monday evening, at 11.30 pm, when all are welcome for the Service of Holy Communion with Carols, and continues on Tuesday at 8.00 and 11.15 am. Please let me know of anyone who would like to receive Holy Communion at home, and if there is anybody who would appreciate a visit from me at home, in hospital, in a nursing home or in a residential care home. With all good wishes for Christmas, David and Margaret Streeter

Stradbroke Parish Council The Parish Pump! Parish Council Meeting held on 12th November 2007

NEXT PARISH COUNCIL MEETING: Monday 10 December 2007 7.30pm At the Community Centre .

Public Forum It was reported that the light near the swimming pool goes off earlier than previously and this has led to some accidents. It was agreed to contact the Pool to ask if this could be left on until midnight. The Community Centre Committee attended to discuss the finances of the Centre. Planning The Parish Council discussed and recommended for approval, the following: 0529/07 Felix Cottage, Wilby Road: erection of 2 storey side and rear extension. 3147/07 Lilacs, Laxfield Road: garage and workshop to side of the house. 3097/07 Foxley Cottage, Doctor’s Lane: Insert double external doors in place of existing small window. 3625/07/LB, 1987/07 North Lane Farm, Pixey Green: Reinstatement of previous roof line, remove existing lean-to extension and build new garden room Other Planning Matters – MSDC have advised that:

A reminder was given that the Site Specific Allocations workshop was to be held by MSDC on 20th November 2007 at Stradbroke Community Centre, 3.00pm – 7.00pm. Everyone was encouraged to attend.

1701/06, 0544/06 White House Cottage, Laxfield Road – This matter had been referred back to MSDC Planning Committee. The applications were approved, but with conditions. 1482/07 Land at the former Hairdressing Salon, Doctor’s Lane – Going to appeal. 1707/07 Land south of Whitehouse Farm - Withdrawn by applicant (Hopkins Homes). 0779/07 Buildings at Manor Farm, Pixey Green, Stradbroke - Change of use of redundant agricultural buildings/yard to business use (B1) - Withdrawn by applicant 1830/07 Rear of Drapers Hill Farm, Laxfield Road, Stradbroke – MSDC refused 2679/07 Land adjoining Veldon, Wilby Road – MSDC refused A reminder was given that the Site Specific Allocations workshop was to be held by MSDC on 20th November 2007 at Stradbroke Community Centre, 3.00pm – 7.00pm. Everyone was encouraged to attend. Wheelchair Access It was requested that the wheelchair ramps in the village streets be better marked as cars sometimes park in front of them preventing access. The Parish Council would like remind all car drivers not to park in front of the ramps or on the pavements as this makes safe access around the village for wheelchairs and pushchairs extremely difficult, if not impossible. Community Centre Finances The Community Centre is currently running at a loss and finding it difficult to undertake necessary repairs or improvements. The Parish Council agreed to make £2000 available in a reserve fund for the use by the Committee. This to be used for repairs and renewals rather than every day running costs. Permissive Path The new Permissive Path is to be formally opened on 1st December 2007 by Guy McGregor at 10.30am. Everyone is invited to attend and refreshments will be available after a stroll along the new path.

Take a stroll along the new path!

Life in the Legion

Now is the busiest time of the year for our Royal British Legion Branch and we have been collecting in subscriptions, The Annual Poppy Appeal, the recent Band Concert for The Legion in The Community, and then followed by The AGM, and The Remembrance Day Wreath Laying and Service. The Band Concert given by The Diss Salvation Army Band was a great success and was attended by over 100 members and guests. Roger Gwyn our Welfare Officer explained the reason for holding it, and the benevolent services that we can offer. Anyone with a service background or their dependants requiring assistance should contact either Roger Gwyn on 01379 384010 or Jeremy Higgins on 01379 384300. At the AGM, which was very well attended, a Branch Certificate of Appreciation was presented to John Graham, our warden for Brundish and surrounding villages, and The County Chairman, Peter Gipson, gave a talk about various county initiatives that are taking place. A draw for The Poppy Appeal made £64.10, and all The Officers and Committee were re-elected for a further year. The Remembrance Day Parade at The War Memorial, conducted by The Rev’d David Streeter, and the Service in The Baptist Church taken by Eric Havers were both very well attended, and 10 wreaths were laid by village organizations. The Church Collection for The Poppy Appeal of £144.12 will make a major contribution to this years appeal. Readings were given by Daphne Pyer and Jeremy Higgins. The next meeting is at The Queens Head on the 13th December for our annual carols, and then followed by The Christmas Lunch. Those wishing to stay for The Christmas Lunch must contact J Higgins 01379 384300 before the 30th November with payment of £10. A very happy Christmas to members and readers and wishing you all good health, and happiness in The New Year. Michael Burton – Branch Chairman.

Stradbroke & District Pre-school Unfortunately last month's article went astray so apologies that the Bingo wasn't advertised but we look forward to seeing you at the community centre on 30th November: eyes down 7:30pm. A St John's Ambulance Emergency child and infant life support course was held at the community centre on 25th September. We found this very interesting, even if we hope not to put it into practice! Thanks to our trainer Pauline Diamond and High Suffolk children’s centre for their help. A small group at Sally’s Dress Agency in Ixworth spent a pleasant evening of retail therapy with £37 being raised. Thanks go to Adrian Poulter who kindly donated his time and knowledge to teach a self-defence session at the Baptist Chapel on 19th October. All had a fun and informative evening. Ticket sales of £45 have been put towards the purchase of musical instruments for the pre-school. Remember, we have registered with a charitable website that enables you to shop online with well-known retailers such as Amazon, Next, Early Learning Centre, M&S, Toys R Us, Woolworths and many more; the retailer will then donate up to 15% of the purchase value to the pre-school. This service has been researched and is provided free. To take a look, and get shopping visit www.easyfundraising.org.uk and simply follow the on-screen instructions. Thank you! Lastly: HAPPY CHRISTMAS! Ginny Carter 388348

“The “Exhibition of Crafts” we held in November was a great success over £500 was raised for the Community Centre; a good result! “

The “Exhibition of Crafts” we held in November was a great success over £500 was raised for the Community Centre; a good result! Our President, Sue Gray, thanked everyone for their help and all those who came along and supported the day. At our Annual Meeting, Dorothy Readman gave us a full account of the year’s activities, her last report for us as she is stepping down from her secretarial duties. Many thanks Dorothy, for all your hard work over many years as our secretary. After all the business of the meeting was done, Sue Ecclestone, from the “Hartismere Hospital Action Group” spoke to us. Sue told us of their aim for the future for Hartismere Hospital, a range of hospital and care facilities for us all in the local area. She gave us a detailed account of the hard work going on `behind the scenes’ and I think that we now understand the huge problem that has been taken on by the enthusiastic and willing volunteers on everyone’s behalf. The competition for `Trace my Place’ was won by Pru and Rose – combined effort! Our next meeting is our Christmas Dinner on Thursday 13th December, 6.00pm for 6.30pm. Looking forward to it! Iris Badcock, press secretary.

The Community Centre Committee Stradbroke Good Neighbours - Just a phone call away.

On behalf of the Community centre committee, I would like to express out thanks and appreciation to the Stradbroke WI. They set out to raise funds for the centre, by arranging a craft exhibition with refreshments and lunches being served. The ladies efforts raised a fantastic sum exceeding £500. This is not the first time the centre has benefited from the ladies of the WI. The donation comes at a time the centre is beginning to find difficulty in making ends meet. There have been items requiring replacement along with repair bills, delaying any projects to make the building more comfortable. To help raise funds, we have introduced “The Stradbroke Cinema”, thanks to committee member Dorothy Readman’s research and instigating the event. We had an excellent attendance for our first showing, and hope this will continue, to ensure our bank balance stays out of the red. Peter Chetwynd, Chairman

The Poppy Appeal The amount donated for The Poppy Appeal in Stradbroke and Wilby is expected to be about £2500.

The local organiser J Higgins reports that the amount donated for The Poppy Appeal in Stradbroke and Wilby is expected to be about £2500, when all the monies are received. The total is likely to be just higher than year, and this excellent result has only been possible due to the very hard work put in by all the house-to-house collectors, and all the village organisations who donate for wreaths. The Poppy Appeal is extremely grateful to all those who have so generously contributed to the appeal. A final total will be put in the January magazine. Jeremy Higgins

The Lottery Bonus Winners 20 – Geo. Cooper, 3 – A. Naulls, 4 – D. Leeder, 7 – J. Ward. £24 donated to Quiz, £48 donated to W.H. Bowls Club, and £24 donated to the Tennis Club

Christmas in Stradbroke

Stradbroke Local History Group

The Archive is looking bare as we have very few examples of Christmas in Stradbroke. If anyone has any photographs of festivities relating to Stradbroke we would love to copy them into the Archive. In the meantime here are a couple of appropriate scenes from Stradbroke’s past.

The snow covered Golden Lion in Queens Street, taken around 1910.

A well known picture of Ellis the Butchers entitled “Xmas 1913” but with few turkeys on show!

The SLHG December meeting is a Christmas get together for SLHG members only and is being held on 5th December at The Priory 7.00 p.m.

The SLHG November meeting “The Village Archive slideshow” was well supported with over 50 people attending. Thanks to everyone who attended and to those who brought new items along for copying into the Archive. We hope to run similar slideshows on a regular basis every few months, the next being in March or April next year.

Church Promissory Donations Promises of money are still arriving and I will let you all know how much has been received in the New Year. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who replied to the letters. Thank you all, Mary Ellis (Treasurer P.C.C.)

Words Of Thanks From... The family of Noel Frost The family of Noel Frost would like to thank everyone who sent cards and donations at his funeral. The sum of £207 was given to the British Heart Foundation and £207 to Diabetes U.K. Jill Frost

Local Gardeners Notes With Christmas approaching I’m sure your not thinking too much about gardening, but there is still plenty to do. Now that the leaves have dropped you can get on with pruning. Most deciduous trees are best pruned in winter when the sap isn’t rising and you can see the shape. My general rule is that most trees are fine to winter prune apart from anything that has a stone fruit (cherries, including ornamental peaches and apricots). Evergreen trees are best not pruned in winter but, if they have to be, don’t do it when the weather is particularly cold. Apple and pear trees are the most common pruned trees. Start by removing dead, damaged or diseased wood and anything that is rubbing. There are different rules for spur and tip bearing fruit trees but if your not sure removing branches from the centre of the tree improves airflow and you don’t want the long wispy growth on top or lots of fussy little branches. Don’t be tempted to do too much in one-year as it encourages the wrong type of growth (and clean your secateurs between trees). Keep on tidying herbaceous plants, cutting them back as they look sad. You will still find that Alchemilla Mollis, and Cranesbill Geraniums look fresher with old leaves removed revealing fresh young leaves below. Now is the time to start readying your hellebores, removing old leaves so that when the flowers appear they are not hidden. Particular favourites are Helleborus x hybridus and Helleborus niger. Cornus sanguinea Penstemons ,Verbena bonariensis, Geranium `Rosanne’ and Nepetax `Winter Beauty’ faassenii (cat mint) are all summer flowering herbaceous plants which may still be going. When tidying up the garden and cutting back shrubs just remember that anything that flowers in the spring uses last year’s growth and you could well be cutting off the flowers (e.g. Forsythia, Lilacs, most Viburnums). Jobs to be thinking of are spiking the lawns, particularly where people often walk, ideally brushing in sharp sand afterwards. Keep raking up leaves, plant raspberry canes, prune grape vines, clean leaves out of ponds if possible and put a ball into the pond to make it easy to break the ice if the weather gets cold, plant bare root roses, drain outside Be careful not to prune taps that might freeze clean bird baths and feeders and keep them away spring flowers on your Viburnums! topped up. Plants to enjoy now are really any of the dogwoods (cornuses), particularly Cornus sanguinea `Winter Beauty’ and Corfnus alba, they work well with Betula utilis var.jacquemontii, the beautiful pure white Birch. Ivy’s are a much-overlooked plant and are invaluable to the few winter insects with their interesting flowers. If you are looking for a good walk to clear a few cobwebs you Keep a look out for otters in could do worse than path along the river Waveney in Hoxne, the Waveney. looking across the water meadows, if you’re lucky you can see herons, wild swans, kingfishers, owls, deer, jack pike rising and, if what I am told is true, you may even see an otter. Luke

A Cinema in Stradbroke Amazing Grace - 17th. Jan. 7.00 for 7.30 pm. at the Community Centre. "Amazing Grace, based on the life of antislavery pioneer William Wilberforce, is directed by Michael Apted from an original screenplay written by Academy Award® nominee Steven Knight .The film stars Ioan Gruffudd , Albert Finney , Romola Garai , Michael Gambon Benedict Cumberbatch , Rufus Sewell , Ciaran Hinds and introduces Youssou N'Dour. It is a film about a great and good man, and the evils of the slave trade. William Wilberforce was a selfless pioneer in the reform of social abuses. He’s best remembered for his eventually successful campaign for the abolition of the slave trade. Amazing Grace tells the story of this campaign, which had been begun by the Quakers, and educates it’s audience as to the millions of deaths and terrible suffering involved in the transport of slaves from Africa, as well as to their appalling suffering in sugar plantations. Carol Singing

Come caroling in Stradbroke this Christmas!

The Friends of All Saints Church are in the process of organising a group of carol singers to roam the village a few days before Christmas. The date would be Friday 20th December. Leaving from outside the Church. We hope to have some musicians – if anyone would like to join us they would be very welcome. Full details will be in next months magazine. Wendy Reeves

East Anglian Air Ambulance. It’s coming round to that time of year again when we make a start on decorating our houses with Christmas lights. After we were so well supported last year (which was our first time) when we raised £375 for the Air Ambulance, we thought that we would try to raise money for them again this year. We will be making a start the first weekend in November (weather permitting), as it will be the roof we start on so that we can be ready for the `switch on’ on the 1st December! The lights will be on from 5.00 pm till 10.00 pm from the 1st of December through to the 6th January so please come down and give us a look and support this very worthy cause. Wishing you all a very Happy Christmas, good luck and happiness! Jan & Barry, 55 Westhall

Hot Stuff or Just Spicy? Curries, you either love them or hate them, however some people have never tried one! If you love curries or, have never tried one, why not come along on the 1st December to the Farmers Market at Stradbroke for an opportunity to taste a few. Curries originate from many countries in the world, India, Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia to name a few but by no means all. At the Ivy House we have successfully introduced a range of curries, which customers can either eat in or take away. Our curries provide a range of different cuisines which include the spicy robust Caribbean curry through to the fragrant aroma of the Thai curry. We look forward to seeing you. Sue Steneth

Two Special Stradbroke Christmas Walks Walk 1. A Guided Christmas Walk of about 3 miles by Torchlight Sunday December 23rd at 7.30 p.m. from the Community Centre. See what our footpaths out to Battlesea Green and back are like in the dark! When we get to Battlesea Hall there will be a welcoming glass of Christmas Cheer and mince pies, courtesy of Adrian & Patricia Lawson. There will a full moon and if we are lucky we can hope for a delightful walk on a bright and frosty night. However do bring a torch in case it should be necessary and it is a good idea to wear boots. Walk 2. A Circular Walk of 5 to 6 miles Thursday 27th December at 10.00 a.m. starting from the Community Centre. Walk off all those Christmas meals with our traditional circular walk via Thorpe Hall, Horham and Wootton Green and finishing down Drapers Hill. Boots are strongly advised. There is no need to book, just come along and do bring any guests you have staying with you. Gerald Jenkins (385825) Footpath Warden

New Permissive Footpath Open A new footpath has been created to provide a safe route along the side of the Laxfield Road out to the Cemetery. The path also completes the circular route around Wilby Road, the footpath by SBEC and Neaves Lane - a short walk so popular with many of us. A safe route out to the Cemetery has been a long held wish of many residents and the Parish Council but the cost of providing a ‘conventional’ pavement meant we could only dream. However, earlier this year the Stradbroke Health Trust were exploring the possibilities of developing some form of healthy walks or exercise circuits from which the footpath idea was borne. We are deeply indebted to the kindness and generosity of local farmers; Ben & Tom Barker and Peter Smith. They gave their consent (without which the project could never have gone ahead) to the creation of a permissive path in their fields. The Trust is also very appreciative of all the local contractors who have done a brilliant job at relatively short notice – Gary & Alan Flatman, Tony Blackman, Darren Bullock, Askews and Waterfields. The path is approximately 400m long and constructed with compacted road planings thus making it accessible to wheelchair users and parents with prams and buggies. The cost of constructing the path and two bridges is approximately £15,000 which has been funded by Suffolk County Council, Mid Suffolk District Council, Stradbroke Parish Council, Guy McGregor’s locality budget and the Health Trust. On Saturday the 1st of December at 10.30 we shall be having an official opening ceremony to which everyone is welcome to come and walk the path and enjoy a glass of mulled wine and mince pie to celebrate the creation of this new asset to the village. Roger Turkington

Coffee Morning Stradbroke over 60’s are holding a coffee morning on Saturday 1st December from 10.30am until 12.00pm in the Community Centre. There will be Cake sales, Tombola and a raffle. Please come along and support us.

Stradbroke News & Views

Letters to the Editor This week I have received letters of thanks regarding to the New Footpath “A big thank you to all those involved in the provision of the new footpath from the cemetery. What a pleasure to walk safely away from the road. Is there a possibility that trees could be planted along the field side? Apart from the visual aspect it would be environmentally beneficial. I would gladly donate to a “tree fund”. Daphne Pyer. As the footpath runs through the farmers field it might involve taking up even more space from land the farmer needs to farm! An excellent idea, however, and thanks for your letter and praise for the new footpath. Ed. “I feel I must congratulate the person or persons involved in the new footpath up the hill towards the cemetery. What a lovely path well done! I am sorry to say that on the second day of it being opened some person’s dog had fouled the footpath.” A Grateful Walker Dog fouling is a problem, but remember it’s the owner not the dog that is the problem! The vast majority of owners clean up after their dogs and dispose of the waste properly. Please inform the parish clerk if you witness any dog owners permitting their dogs to foul public areas and failing to clear up. Thanks for your positive comments about the new footpath. Ed.

Suffolk Family Carers We are an independent charity, our services are free! A Family Carer is defined as any age; ‘looking after’ a relative, friend, partner, parent/s or child/siblings who cannot manage without them because of illness, age or physical, learning or mental health difficulties. Many Family Carers, care for more than one person. The main concerns are when caring impacts on every part of the Family Carers’ life. It is then, especially, that support is needed which is more focused, planned, and often outside the home, with a complete break from the caring role. This we know sustains situations, otherwise there would be many more people cared for in residential homes, hospitals and other establishments. Please call our Helpline for more information; 01473 232679 or visit our website; www.suffolk-carers.co.uk

Your Editor Speaks... Over the past few months much has been said about proposed redevelopment in the area with much comment being made about Road Safety, which I would think, should be a concern for us all everywhere in Stradbroke. Last year, on many occasions in the winter months, I drove out of the village down Queen Street passing the Primary School at times of the day when the children were either being dropped off or picked up. The yellow zigzag lines rather than stopping parking, seemed to act as a “good spot to stop”. Many vehicles were parked facing the wrong way with their head lights dipped so they shone into oncoming drivers eyes. Trying to pass vehicles parked in Queen Street near to the school is bad enough at the best of times with the oncoming traffic but, add to that, a dark rainy afternoon with drivers trying to get a glimpse of a child on the pavement through the rows of highly illuminated parked vehicles and you have an accident waiting to happen. I passed the school this year and the same thing is happening, coaches, vans and cars all compete for the prime parking spots on the no parking zig-zag lines. The new “20’s plenty” signs indicate that there is a clear danger to the pupils of the school and thoughtless parking only makes that danger worse. Tony Ambler, Editor
