Walk 1. A Guided Christmas Walk of about 3 miles by Torchlight Monday December 22nd at 7.30 p.m. from the Community Centre. See what our footpaths out to Battlesea Green and back are like in the dark! When we get to Battlesea Hall there will be a welcoming glass of Christmas Cheer and mince pies, courtesy of Adrian & Patricia Lawson. There will not be much of a moon but if we are lucky we can hope for a delightful walk on a dark and frosty night. Do bring a torch and it is a good idea to wear boots. Walk 2. A Circular Walk of 5 to 6 miles Saturday 27th December at 10.00 a.m. starting from the Community Centre. Walk off all those Christmas meals with our traditional circular walk via Thorpe Hall, Horham and Wootton Green and finishing down Drapers Hill. Boots are strongly advised. There is no need to book, just come along and do bring any guests you have staying with you. Gerald Jenkins (385825) Footpath Warden

Your Editor Speaks... I would like to remind everyone that there is no January Edition of the magazine so please look to the Village Diary on the back page for the next date for articles to arrive by, for the February edition. I would also like contributors to note that if I have been sent lists of events taking place over the next twelve months for inclusion in the Dec/Jan edition of the magazine, they haven’t been included due to space constraints. We will ensure, as always, that where we have your organisations events submitted to us, they will be included in the magazine on the month of the event and the month preceding it too - if it is submitted in advance it will go in! On behalf of all the Magazine Team, I would like to wish all our readers a very Happy Christmas and Prosperous New Year. The Editor.

Emmanuel Behold a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a Son and they shall call his name Em-an-uel, which being interpreted is, God-with-us.Jesus is Emmanuel. He is God with us. Seeing Jesus, we see God the Father, Maker of the Universe, manifest in the flesh….. Jesus said “I am the Way the Truth and the life, believe it because it is so”. There were shepherds in a field looking after the flocks, when an angel appeared to them saying” Do not be afraid, I bring Good News. This day in Bethlehem your Saviour has been born, you will find him wrapped in strips of cloth and lying in a manger”. The heavens were filled with angels singing praises to God; “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and peace on earth to those with whom He is pleased” So the shepherds went to the town, and found the baby with Mary and Joseph. They were filled with wonder and praised God.

Maybe this Christmas you will know that Jesus came to bring peace into your life.

Stradbroke Baptist Church wishes everyone a blessed Christmastime. Christmastime Stradbroke Baptist Church, Laxfield Road Stradbroke, Suffolk

Church Treasurer I would like to thank the 2 cyclists who rode in the sponsored Church Cycle Ride and raised £371.80, which will be divided equally between The Suffolk Historic Churches Fund and our own All Saints church. Thanks for you involvement. Also thanks to all who gave so generously every month enabling us to help keep the building water tight and welcoming. Mary Ellis

All Saints Church Fund Raising Committee We have said our good bye’s to Cyril & Marjorie and Pat is making good progress in hospital so we wish them all well. Our Christmas Coffee Morning raised £187.05 so thanks must go to Ann & Jeremy and, if we include the 6th of December Cake Stall, we will have reached our target of £5,000.00; not bad for 6 aging ladies! Even more good news is that we have recruited 2 more new members who are Dianne Maynard and Joyce Lartis to whom we extend a very warm welcome. They will join us when we go to lunch on the 5th January. Lastly, we all hope you have a lovely Christmas and a Peaceful 2009 and look forward to your support next year. Mary Ellis

The Rectory - Tel: 384363 Email: davidstreeter@suffolkonline.net Dear Friends, The Christmas season begins on Advent Sunday, Nov. 30th, at 10.00 am with Parish Communion and The Carol Service is at Athelington at 4.30 pm, with the Benefice Choir, and refreshments. On Sunday Dec. 7th, please bring a gift to be passed on by the Salvation Army to those who will greatly appreciate them at this time of year; (do put a label on the parcel to say who it’s for). The Candle-Lit Carol Service on Sunday 21st at 6.30 pm has glorious lights, sounds and voices to create a joyful setting for the presentation of the story of the Incarnation of Jesus Christ. On Wednesday, 24th December, at 6.00 pm, we stop work in the middle of the week to concentrate our attention on the floodlit church tower in the middle of the village, the star that takes our sight upwards where the red cross on the flag, above the crossroads in the centre of the parish, challenges us as to which direction our lives will take at this momentous time when we remember how love came into the dark and anxious world at Bethlehem. Inside the lights of the Christmas Tree are waiting to give us a surprise as the angels focus their beams of light and tune their song that we may not only hear and see the birth of our Lord and Saviour with our eyes and ears, but also with our hearts and hopes welcome him as we look forward to opening our presents but also fear what the future may bring into these troubled and changing times. Christmas Day starts that evening at 11.30 pm when all are welcome to the Midnight Mass with carols, and in the morning at 8.00 and 10.30 am. Do please tell me if you know of anyone wishing to receive Holy Communion at home, and of those at home, in hospital, in a nursing or residential care home to whom I should make a visit that we may the joy of this festive season. With all good wishes for Christmas and the New Year, David and Margaret Streeter. Church Cleaning will be on the 4th. December and the 8th. January. 10.00 am onwards.

This is a very busy time of year with subscriptions to collect, The Poppy Appeal, Our AGM, and Remembrance Sunday. I wish to thank Jeremy Higgins, our Poppy Appeal Organizer, for all the work he has done, and also to all our collectors, and everybody in the village that has contributed to The Appeal, which is the lifeblood of our organization. At our AGM held on the 6th November, attended by 17 members, we remembered with The RBL Tribute Bert Lockwood, Ken Missen, and Neil Dutton who had passed away during the year. The Membership has been maintained, and reports were given by The Officers present with our Branch Treasurer, Roger Gwyn, making his final report prior to his resignation from The Legion. On the plus side the Branch now has 2 new Caseworkers to deal with the service work, and these are Joyce Cooper from Horham, and John Graham from Brundish. The Officers and Committee were re-elected and donations were agreed to Halsey House, our Local Legion Home, The Poppy Appeal, and The Suffolk County Chairman’s Appeal. A draw held for The Poppy Appeal at the end of the meeting raised £37. There was as usual a very good turnout for The Remembrance Day Parade at The War Memorial on a sunny autumn morning. A short dedication was led by our Branch Padre, David Streeter, after which 10 wreaths were laid by Village Organisations, and this is very much appreciated. This year The Bugle Calls were sounded from a recording. The Branch Standard was carried by Ian Bushnell from Horham, The Efficiency Standard by Air Cadet Elizabeth Harvey also from Horham, and Sarah Zava carried the Brownie Standard. The Service for Remembrance Day then followed in All Saint’s Church. The Poppy Appeal is very grateful to have received the collection. Our last event this year is our Christmas Carol Service and Lunch to be held in Laxfield Village Hall at 11.30am on Thursday 11th December. The secretary J Higgins, 01379 384300, requires all those attending to give him names by the end of November at the latest. The meal will be served by The King’s Head Staff. Seasons Greetings and a Happy New Year to all our readers. Michael Burton – Branch Chairman.

Stradbroke Local History Group Last month’s meeting was the Village Archive Slideshow No. 3. Over 80 people attended this latest show and enjoyed a view of Stradbroke’s past, covering items ranging from Charles I in the 1600s through Georgian and Victorian times and up to the present day. The next open meeting will be in February 2009. The December meeting is the SLHG members Christmas get together which will be on Friday 12th December and there is no meeting in January. The next Village Archive Slideshow (No.4 in the series) will be held in March 2009. Full details and details of the February meeting will be in the next magazine. Mike Readman

“Our Secretary, Jennifer Chetwynd, gave us a full account of the year’s activities; we certainly have had a very successful year. “

Stradbroke Women’s Institute

Our Annual Meeting was held on the 13th November and was very well attended. Our Secretary, Jennifer Chetwynd, gave us a full account of the year’s activities; we certainly have had a very successful year. Sue Gray was re-elected as our President and the current committee were willing to carry on their good works. Michelle White came to speak to us from the Driving Standards Agency and gave us much advice on driving our vehicles, to keep ourselves safe and to enable us to carry on driving as long as possible. Her talk was very informative and of great help as such a lot has changed since we took our driving tests, I would think that we would all need refresher courses if we had to re-sit our driving tests. Lily Lofts gave the vote of thanks and Jane Gemmill won the competition. Well-done ladies! Our next meeting is on Thursday December 11th and is our Christmas Dinner and evening and don’t forget ladies it’s 6.00 pm for 6.30 pm. I am looking forward to it. Also don’t forget our January meeting which is on the 8th at 7.30 pm in the Community Centre. I shall let you know how everything went in the next edition of the magazine, which is in February. Happy Christmas and New Year to everyone. Iris Badcock, Press Secretary

Suffolk Family Carers “Please call our Helpline for more information; 01473 232679 or visit our website; suffolkcarers.co.uk.“

We are an independent charity, our services are free! A Family Carer is defined as any age; ‘looking after’ a relative, friend, partner, parent/s or child/ siblings who cannot manage without them because of illness, age or physical, learning or mental health difficulties. Many Family Carers, care for more than one person. The main concerns are when caring impacts on every part of the Family Carers’ life. It is then, especially, that support is needed which is more focused, planned, and often outside the home, with a complete break from the caring role. This we know sustains situations, otherwise there would be many more people cared for in residential homes, hospitals and other establishments. Please call our Helpline for more information; 01473 232679 or visit our website; www.suffolk-carers.co.uk

Stradbroke Primary School I start with a piece of sad news; you may have noticed that another of the willow trees at the front of the school playground has had to be removed. Thank you to all of you in the village who alerted me to the fact that the tree was infected with “honey fungus”. Although not poisonous unless eaten in large quantities, the tree had died and did need to be removed- sad news as the willow tree is our school emblem. On a happier note the children recently had a visit from Dr. Ken (right), a very talented Scientist. Dr. Ken performed an “Entertaining Science Circus skills” workshop for each class and rounded off the day with a science show. It was a really enjoyable day, good for promoting Science and showing the children how much fun this subject can be. We were able to book pantomime to be performed in school from school funds this year, a touring production of “The Snow Queen”. Rehearsal of our own Christmas productions are underway and I have purchased a brand new stage for our budding thespians. A Carol Service has been planned for the end of term at Stradbroke Church. Our brass band will play at the service; it will be a chance to show off the new addition to our band- trombones! It really is a privilege to work with children at this time of year, they become more and more excited as the end of term approaches and it is lovely to share that with them. As this is the last submission before the festive season I would like to wish all the readers of “The Stradbroke Monthly” a very happy Christmas and wonderful New Year. Melanie Barrow, Headteacher of Stradbroke Primary.

Stradbroke & District Pre-School with Stradbroke Bumps, Babies & Toddler Group. Firstly a massive ‘thank you’ to everyone who attended the 70’s/80’s Disco on 18th October; it was a great success with plans already in place for next year. It was really fantastic that everyone made an effort to dress up – personally I liked the Ghostbuster, Jimmy Saville, Slash and of course the Rubiks Cube best of all! The Christmas Bingo Night on 21st November was also a great success. With prizes including an Ipswich Town FC programme signed by the 1st team, case of St Peter’s beer, lunch at the Fox & Goose, £25 Adnams voucher and a tour and tasting session at Greene King Brewery. The Toddler’s Christmas Party will be held on 17th December at 11:00am with a visit from the man in red himself (Father Christmas of course) – new faces are always welcome. Look out for some smartly dressed Pre-School children next year, we hope to introduce a voluntary t-shirt and jumper to allow the children to really enjoy messy-play without worrying about their clothes. Our new security system (an Ofsted requirement) should be installed at the Pre-School for the New Year and a big ‘thank you’ to the Parish Council for kindly donating towards the cost. I think it should be mentioned that the Pre-School and Toddler Group is a registered charity which is run by a VOLUNTARY committee and we do need everyone to help out, to those wh o already do… thank you for all your hard work, the children are really benefiting from a terrific Pre-School. Stradbroke Bumps, Babies and Toddler Group meets every Wednesday 10:00 – 12:00 during term time at the Community Centre. We have a wide range of toys suitable from birth to Pre-School with a craft activity and healthy snack provided for each child. We also have termly visits from the Early Years Family Advisor for weigh-ins and general questions or concerns. We have welcomed a lot of new faces recently so this really is a great way to meet people in the village and prepare your child for Pre-School in a friendly safe environment. Please contact Zoe on 388398 for more details. We would be very grateful for any volunteers to make the refreshments at the Toddler Group, if you would like to help out, please contact Zoe on 388398. Louise Wilkinson, Committee Member.

Stradbroke Over 60’s We were all so very sorry to hear of the sad loss of Evelyn Hawes. She had been involved with the Stradbroke Over 60’s for a long time and was our President for many years and did a sterling job for us all. Several members attended her funeral. We are now coming towards the close of the year for our club with a Coffee Morning to be held on Saturday 29th November from 10.30 till noon. Following this is our Christmas Dinner and get together on Thursday December 4th. We then close over the winter months until our first meeting of 2009, which will be on Thursday 5th March. May we take this opportunity to wish you all a Very Happy Christmas and best wishes for next year! Joan Grimes

A big “thank you” from The Poppy Appeal Co-ordinator. The Poppy Appeal is estimated to reach a Total of £2700 this year and on behalf of The Appeal I would like to thank all the collectors and everybody who has donated so generously. I must mention in particular the swimming pool staff, who off their own bat and without any prompting organised a sponsored swim to raise money for The Appeal after their collecting box was stolen. The result was 14 miles swum in 1 hour by the 10 staff - a total 1120 lengths of the pool, which raised £260.55. This was a fantastic effort and very many thanks. Jeremy Higgins Local Organiser.

Letters to the Editor Sir, “It was pleasing to see a group of young people working very hard tidying the Church paths, and cutting back the overgrowing grass. One young person told me they were getting it ready for Remembrance Sunday. Well done! Gordon Nunn” Sir, “I would like to say a big thank you to all my friends in Stradbroke who took time to send cards, letters, and gifts wishing me well. I have received well over 100. The ward I am in are very impressed, and think that the community that I live in must be very special, which of course it is. I have been very well looked after in Ipswich Hospital, and am looking forward to seeing you all when I get my freedom. Many thanks again – Patricia Fill.” Sir, “Friends Of All Saints would like to give a big thank you to all those who attended the “A Taste of Europe” and helped at our fund raising evening, where everyone enjoyed the wide variety of food from four different countries. We raised approx £800. Thank you, Margaret Buckland” “Dear Friends At this rather late date I am writing on behalf of all the family to thank you so much for all your care and support during the months of Trevor’s illness, at the time when he died and during the months since then. Your support has meant so much to us. Thank you, also, for the donation you made in Trevor’s memory. I am sure you will be as moved and delighted as we have been that your donations amounted to £1500. Trevor, in his truly modest way, would have been both surprised and moved. From this £1500 we are able to make the following donations:- Our local Doctors’ Surgery - £600, he Wolverston Wing at Ipswich Hospital - £500, Hospice at Home, Ipswich - £250, Local District Nurses - £150 We hope that these donations in Trevor’s name will help to bring comfort to patients in a similar situation. Sue Boon” Sir, “From the Garden of England to the Bread Basket of England and now to the Cotswolds It was in 1991 that we moved from our home of 35 years in rural Kent to a delightful old house in Stradbroke. After a few alterations and additions it was to be our home for the next 17 years; also home for goats and dogs. We could not have found a more suitable place. The people of Stradbroke made us most welcome right from the start. Our thanks go to the many friends we made (too many to mention by name) for helping us to enjoy our time there. Marjorie enjoyed her association with the church, particularly with flower arranging, while Cyril enjoyed freedom to befriend the local farmers and wander around local fields. Being a relatively long way away from family (Oxfordshire and Hampshire), and as neither of us get any younger, it had to be a sensible time to move nearer to them while we still enjoy relatively good health. As we write this, we are staying with family in Oxfordshire as we look for a suitable new home in the vicinity. Again, many thanks to the good people of Stradbroke, Wilby and the other local villages for the good times we have enjoyed. We will miss you all Marjorie and Cyril Roberts, Recently of Marsh Farm, Stradbroke” Sir, “Kidney Research Collection. - In the recent collection, the sum of £38.00 was raised from the residents of Woodfields, Stradbroke. John Bedwell, the collector, would like to thank all who gave for this worthy cause. John Bedwell.”

Local Gardeners Notes We used to have an allotment when we lived in London and I not only enjoyed having the space to grow fruit and vegetables but also enjoyed the social aspect of having a chat with neighbouring plot holders about the do's and don'ts of growing various things. We were by far the youngest people with most being 70 plus and coming from places like Korea and Poland which made for an interesting choice of produce. It is a great shame that we don't have allotments here in Stradbroke as having the support of experienced growers is a real boost for anyone starting out and there is a good amount of healthy competition. Things to do in the garden as herbaceous plants look messy cut back, this is still a good time to lift and divide any plants that need it. To get the best out of herbaceous perennials you should be dividing them every 3 - 5 years. When I lift plants I always check for root damage and evidence of vine weevil larvae, they are a small maggot type grub with a reddish orange head. Plants like sedums, heucheras and geraniums are particularly susceptible. I hand pick them out and hope for a cold spell. There are chemical treatments but a preferable method is a biological control watering on nematodes but this can only be done in late spring/early summer. There is still just about time to plant out bulbs, particularly tulips as they prefer to be planted late. They should be cut price in garden centres now, you can also plant them up in pots to place in bare spots in the border next spring/summer. My daughter, Tilly, and some of her school friends, have potted up hyacinths, narcissus and small irises that they are going to sell at the farmers market at the High School to raise money to start a gardening club (with only a little encouragement from me). Traditionally January is the time that seed catalogues come through the door and it's a good way to brush off the winter blues choosing from the huge variety of vegetable seeds with great plans for the year to come, forgetting that last year you didn't get time to sow half of the seeds you ordered. It's worth keeping it in mind you can order with other people and share the seeds and cost. This is the last article before Christmas and I wish you all a happy one, if you want to get the best out of your Christmas tree try not to put it by a radiator and keep it watered, if it's a cut one you can just take a slice off the bottom of the trunk before potting it as it helps to take up the water. Looking forward to a productive 2009, best wishes, Luke
