Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Two Special Stradbroke Christmas Walks Walk 1. A Guided Christmas Walk of about 3 miles by Torchlight Tuesday December 22nd at 7.30 p.m. from the Community Centre. See what our footpaths out to Battlesea Green and back are like in the dark! When we get to Battlesea Hall there will be a welcoming glass of Christmas Cheer and mince pies, courtesy of Adrian & Patricia Lawson. There should be a quarter moon and if we are lucky we can hope for a delightful walk on frosty moonlit night. Do bring a torch and it is a good idea to wear boots. Walk 2. A Circular Walk of 5 to 6 miles Sunday 27th December at 10.00 a.m. starting from the Community Centre. Walk off all those Christmas meals with our traditional circular walk via Thorpe Hall, Horham and Wootton Green and finishing down Drapers Hill. Boots are strongly advised. There is no need to book, just come along and do bring any guests you have staying with you. Gerald Jenkins (385825) Footpath Warden

It was the Christmas family service, and all the people were gathered round the crib at the front of the church. ‘Look in the crib,’ said the leader, ‘and see if you can tell me what’s missing.’ Everyone peered in. Everything seemed to be there. ‘Are all the people there?’ he asked. They checked carefully: Mary, Joseph, baby Jesus, wise men, shepherds, an angel; yes, they were all there. ‘And is everything in the stable?’ They looked again: a donkey, a cow, straw, a manger; yes, everything was there. ‘But what’s missing?’ the leader asked again. They shook their heads. They couldn’t think of anything. ‘This is what’s missing!’ he said, and emptied a bucket of farmyard manure onto the church floor. The smell gave a sense of reality to the scene. With our adornments of cards, presents, tinsel and decorations it is easy to forget the reality of Christmas. For we celebrate the birth of Jesus, God Himself coming to the world that He had created as a demonstration of His great love for us. The birth of Jesus is the reason for the season. We wish you God’s blessing at Christmas and for the New Year!

Organisations Stradbroke Community Centre Update! Now that the new kitchen is installed and completed in the Community Centre the committee would like to thank all the people who helped us to finance this project. The WI for donating the proceeds of their craft morning, the Table Tennis Club, our village lottery, Anita and Ron Bird for their contributions and the Stradbroke Charitable Trust, the Parish Council, the Suffolk Foundation, Mid Suffolk District Council and Councillor Guy McGregor on behalf of Suffolk County Council. The units were supplied and installed by Kitchen Plus of Ipswich. The financial support we received enabled us to replace the old units that were not very strong and past their sell by date. We hope that everybody who uses the Community Centre will enjoy our refurbished kitchen. Eileen Shelford. Treasurer. Stradbroke Sports and Community Centre.

Your Editor Speaks... As this is the Christmas edition can I, on behalf of the magazine team, wish all of our readers a very “Merry Christmas” and a” Happy New Year” and remind you that there is no January edition. The February edition of the Stradbroke Monthly will be the first in a couple of ways; it will be the first in 2010 (yes 2009 really has passed by that quickly!) and it will also be the first with your new editor, Dudley Wood so can you please ensure that all hand written articles are delivered to him at the address on the back of the magazine, or placed in the post office as usual. The Rectory Tel: 384363 Email: davidstreeter@suffolkonline.net Church Website: www.allsaints-stradbroke. com Dear Friends, Christmas begins early this year in Stradbroke, in fact on Friday, 27th November, at 4.00 pm. Father Christmas will make a surprise visit to All Saints Church that afternoon to declare open the The BIG Christmas Crib Exhibition. Schoolchildren have been making cribs, displays & statues to celebrate “The Year of The Child”. Our church will put some of them on show for a week, to help get us ready for the festivities and to raise money for The Children’s Society. Do please come and welcome Santa Claus to Stradbroke on Friday afternoon and see the exhibition then, or come again next morning for Coffee, Drinks and Biscuits. The Church will be open from 10.00 am to 1.00 pm and 2.00 to 4.00 pm every day from Saturday 28th November until Thursday 3rd December, with a Service of Holy Communion, hymns & a sermon at 10.00 am on November 29th, Advent Sunday. Do please come to the church over these seven days, and take this opportunity to see inside, and to talk to the Rector. Most of the time, except on Thursday afternoon when I go to the Over Sixties Xmas Lunch, I will be there myself, and I hope that you will take this opportunity to come in the door – and out the same door, after you have had a look round, and shared a friendly word. Stradbroke Church is most unusual, if you think of other churches that you know in towns or villages, in having a footpath up to the doors that is also a principal route for many on their way through the village. Until the Baptist Church, the Courthouse and the Primary School were built in the 19th century, the church was our only public building, and with both doors open, saw many people come in and out for a great variety of reasons. Please make your decision to come north, south, east or west – but also through the church door this week. With all good wishes, David Streeter. Church cleaning on Thursday 3rd December at 10.00am onwards.

News Items Dog Fouling: It has been reported to the Clerk that there is a resurgence of dog fouling along Wilby Road. There are waste bins around the village so please ensure you clean up after your dog. It only takes a moment to pick up and makes the village a far more pleasant place to walk around. Neighbourhood Watch: As mentioned last month, Nick Thompson will shortly stand down as co-ordinator for the village. Please contact Nick if you would like to take on this important post. You would be the contact with the police, providing a vital local service. It would be very sad to see this project cease through lack of interest, and with it a rise in insurance premiums for all. The Parish Council would like to thank Nick for all the effort he has made, over the past almost three years, to help make Stradbroke a safe place to be. Youth Football: The Parish Council was pleased to hear that Don Darling had secured grant funding to get youth football underway in the village and is happy to offer its support to this project.

Neighbourhood Watch: Your village needs YOU! Can you help?

Housing Needs Survey: The Council agreed a format for the forthcoming Housing Needs Survey. This will be delivered to every house in the village sometime in early 2010. The survey will not take long to complete and your cooperation is requested. Please take a few moments to complete and return it to Suffolk ACRE. This survey will provide information indicating if there is a need for affordable housing in Stradbroke, not just in 2010 but for several years to come. No information is released to the Parish Council and confidentiality is assured. So do return your questionnaire inthe freepost envelope that will be provided. Tony Ambler, the current editor of the Stradbroke Monthly, will be stepping down at the end of this year and we would particularly like to thank him for all his hard work and dedication in editing the magazine. Whilst rather unseen this is a crucial role in ensuring the magazine is produced each month. He has chased and chivvied, assisted and re-written to ensure all is ready for each production. His work behind the scenes has been invaluable and we will certainly miss him. As this will be the last episode of the Parish Pump before Christmas the Parish Council and the Clerk wish all residents a safe and happy Christmas and a calm and prosperous New Year. The next meeting of the Parish Council: 14 December 14th 2009 at 7.30pm and the following meeting 11th January 2010 at 7.30pm.

Thanks Tony!

Life in the Legion Twenty members and guests attended our AGM when the Guest Speaker was The New Suffolk County Secretary Peter Golding, who I welcomed. In the tribute at the start of the meeting I mentioned the names of 6 members who had passed away during the year plus Derek Doy from Southwold, a past County Standard Bearer, who had attended our Branch Dinners for many years. Reports were given by the Branch Officers, and Donations were voted to The Poppy Appeal and The County Benevolent Fund. All the Branch Officers were re-elected for another year. I was presented with a County Walk Certificate from The County Secretary in recognition of the £335 I raised for the County Benevolent Funds. Branch Committee Member, Tom Moore, very kindly presented the Branch with a Bugle. This was in recognition of the continued success of the Branch, and the hard work put in by all the officers and members to sustain it, and also the 27 years I have now served as Branch Chairman. The Assistant Secretary Graham Neale and his wife Evelyn ran a Draw for The Poppy Appeal, which raised £66. As in previous years a large crowd gathered at The War Memorial on Remembrance Sunday to pay their respects to the dead in two World Wars and in all the subsequent conflicts. Our Branch Chaplain David Streeter conducted a short service and the Last Post and Reveille were sounded for the 2 minutes silence by Barrie Sturgeon from Diss Salvation Army. Twelve Wreaths were laid by Village Organisations. Ian Bushnell carried the Branch Standard, and Aimee Macdonald the Brownie Standard. 4 Air Cadets from Diss ATC were present, and their leader laid The RAF Wreath. The Remembrance Day Service followed and was very well attended in The Baptist Church led by Eric Havers. Branch Secretary Jeremy Higgins and Albert Siggers said prayers and gave readings. A collection was held for The Poppy Appeal. The next Branch Event is on Thursday December 10th at 11.30am at The Laxfield Village Hall where we will enjoy a Christmas Lunch after singing a few Christmas Carols. Members have already been advised by letter but are reminded that the Secretary J Higgins (01379 384300) needs the names of all those staying for the Lunch by December 1st. Christmas greetings and a Happy New Year to all readers. Michael Burton – Branch Chairman

Stradbroke Primary School The Autumn term has flown by with lots of good things happening at Stradbroke Primary School. We are really fortunate that we have so many fantastic volunteers helping out in school. We have lots of parents who listen to readers and help out in class. We have a new library and have received great support from Mrs Wilkinson who also works at Stradbroke library, who have helped us get this into shape. We are fortunate to have an access point computer now for parents to use. This term also saw our first SHARE project, where we invited parents in to participate in an activity with their children and school staff. The project for Key Stage One parents and pupils, was on a pirate themed craft activity. We take pride in working well as part of our community and in November Stradbroke Primary participated with the Royal British Legion in the village Remembrance service with children and Governors from the school laying a wreath at the war memorial. This was particularly special for those children with parents currently serving in the armed forces. We celebrated our Harvest Festival in style at Stradbroke Church. The floral displays were amazing and it was great to see so many parents there supporting their children. Our Infant Play area is to be furnished imminently and I am awaiting delivery of a pirate ship sand pit, raised flower beds, new storage shed and play house. I have seen this area transform and look forward to sharing this with our Reception children. We rounded off half term with a Halloween Disco run by the Friends of the School. Class 4 also attended an enjoyable educational visit to Minsmere Nature Reserve recently. Stradbroke Primary continues to thrive and aside from our new intake we welcomed ten new children since the Summer. Mr Readman our super football coach, has welcomed lots of these children as new recruits into the school team. Again I extend the offer to parents considering new schools this year- arrange a visit with me to see why Stradbroke Primary has become so popular and is such a special place. Looking ahead to Christmas we have a packed schedule of fun events including a Carol Service at the Church, Christmas play and Christmas dinner for the children. Our Friends of the School are holding their annual Christmas Fair on Friday 4th of December from 6.00pm, please come along if you are able to. There are always some great stalls and the children thoroughly enjoy this event. Finally I would like to wish the readers of Stradbroke Monthly a very happy Christmas and New Year. Melanie Barrow, Headteacher Stradbroke CEVC Primary.

Organisations Stradbroke Women’s Institute We held our “Annual Meeting” in November and, after our normal business was done and we had selected the officers for the coming year, we settled down to listen to Basil Abbott who talked about his life as a Toastmaster. Resplendent he looked in his red tails and pristine white shirt as he told us of many instances at various celebrations, weddings, Masonic ladies nights, special birthdays and many more, some funny and some rather sad but all entertaining. Irene Rogers gave the vote of thanks and also won the competition with her Indian Wedding Invitation. Well-done Irene! Our Christmas meeting and dinner is on Thursday 10th December. I am really looking forward to it, we can let our hair down and enjoy ourselves and don’t forget the dinner is in the Community Centre, 6.00pm for 6.30pm, don’t be late. Our January meeting on the 14th is back to the old start time of 7.30pm for the start of the new year, do come along and give us a try. I wish you all a “Very Happy Christmas” and “Peaceful New Year”. Iris Badcock, Press Secretary.

The meeting gives members of the public the opportunity to state their case. Any long-term problems over noise levels, like loud music, should be reported to Mid Suffolk District Council on 0845 6066067. Any one incident should be reported to the police. A party in the 1950s (?) at the British Legion hut—were you there? Can you tell us more?

The December meeting is the regular Christmas get together for SLHG members and as there is no meeting in January, it will be February before the next open meeting when we will have a guest speaker on a subject yet to be decided ! Thank you to everyone who has contributed to the Village Archive and who have supported our activities over the past year. The Archive continues to grow and new items come in every month so Stradbroke’s history is steadily being unravelled. If you have items that relate in any way to Stradbroke or know someone who has, then please donate them, or allow them to be copied to the Village Archive. Have a great Christmas and a Happy New Year from everyone at SLHG ! Mike Readman

Suffolk Family Carers We are an independent charity, our services are free! A Family Carer is defined as any age; ‘looking after’ a relative, friend, partner, parent/s or child/siblings who cannot manage without them because of illness, age or physical, learning or mental health difficulties. Many Family Carers, care for more than one person. The main concerns are when caring impacts on every part of the Family Carers’ life. It is then, especially, that support is needed which is more focused, planned, and often outside the home, with a complete break from the caring role. This we know sustains situations, otherwise there would be many more people cared for in residential homes, hospitals and other establishments. Please call our Helpline for more information; 01473 232679 or visit our website; www.suffolk-carers.co.uk

Stradbroke Cinema

Stradbroke Cinema Will be open on the 17th December 2009

On Thursday,17th. December, Stradbroke Community Centre, 7 for 7.30 pm. Bar will be open - and Ice creams in the interval! Entrance £5.50 we are showing The Boat that Rocked is an understated mix of music and cinemography, the characters are a believably ecclectic group, headed by Quentin (Bill Nighy), living as a group of pirate radio DJs aboard the Radio Rock boat, somewhere in the North Sea. The Count (Philip Seymour Hoffman), Gavin (Rhys Ifans) and Dave (Nick Frost) are the other main DJs. It is hilariously funny and is a fantastic tribute to the pirate DJs and their influence on popular radio. Comes thoroughly recommended definitely the most feel-good film out this year The dates for films, the titles of which have yet to be determined, for the early part of 2010 are Thursday 21st January, Thursday 18th February Thursday 18th March Margaret Streeter

News & Views Mid Suffolk District Council Patients say our hospitals are in the region’s top four West Suffolk and Ipswich hospitals have been rated second and fourth respectively in the east of England region out of the total 18 acute hospitals, according to a recent survey on the ‘user experience.’ Both hospitals were also rated above the regional and the national average. The NHS User Experience Survey draws its findings from three sources – the NHS national patient survey programme, the NHS staff survey and written complaints data – and rates acute hospitals according to the following eight categories: Access and waiting Safe and high quality coordinated care Better information and more choice Building closer relationships Whether it’s a clean, comfortable and friendly place Whether it focuses on the person Shows dignity and respect and Whether it’s a learning organisation A key source of this survey – the NHS national patient survey programme – has been established as a result of the Government’s commitment to ensuring that patients and the public have a real say in how NHS services are planned and developed. Getting feedback from patients and listening to their views and priorities is therefore vital for continually improving services. MSDC

Stradbroke White Hart Bowls Club On January 29th we are holding “Prize Bingo for Burns Night” to raise funds for the Stradbroke White Hart Bowls Club at 7.30pm in the Stradbroke Community Centre Julie Ward, Secretary The AGM was held on Wednesday 18th November 2009 and everyone was delighted to be back in the White Hart which has undergone a real transformation and looks superb. Max and Alison were complimented on the wonderful job they have done in bringing the White Hart back to life. The chairman’s report covered the situation over the past year leading up to the sale of the pub and stated that the end result far exceeded expectations and we can now look forward to a bright future. A future that needs to include the sort of form we displayed on the green in the early season, which showed how well we can play on the day against anyone. The Officers were re-elected unanimously and Mike Ransome the Club Captain, thanked all the players and helpers whose efforts kept the club in a strong position. The finances of the club are sound thanks in no small way to the support from the Bingo evenings and we are grateful to the organisers for all their work and to all those who attend and donate prizes. The club also expressed it’s appreciation to Jim and Elaine at The Queen’s Head for looking after our post match refreshments last season. The Mid Suffolk League which has been running for nearly 100 years with the same six local clubs has reorganised the format for 2010. Matches will be played with 9 per team rather than 12 which ensures that all the clubs will continue to participate. The Yarmouth day with the Lord Huntingfield Cup remains unchanged. (The only change we seek is to win it this year! ) Our Club Presentation Evening will be held early next year and we look forward to next season with great enthusiasm. If anyone, experienced or new to the game, would like to play, then look out for the White Hart club days at the start of the season and come along and join in the fun. ` Mike Readman

Stradbroke Cricket Club The cricket season would be a distant memory if it were not for the fact that the vista of the Playing Field seems to change daily, and plans for 2010 are in full swing, which is the 30th Anniversary of the Club reforming. A line was drawn nicely under the first three decades with the Annual Presentation Night in October. Guest speaker was England Cricket Captain Charlotte Edwards, who enthralled the 100+ members & family present with stories of how she started playing cricket in a boys team, right through to lifting the Ashes, World Cup & World Twenty20, all in the space of 8 months earlier this year. She then handed out the following awards: ‘Player of the Year’ - 1st XI – James Ling(pic 1), A Team – Simon Higgins (pic 2), B Team – Billy Freeman, Academy & Under 15 – Ollie Bickley(pic 3), Under 13 – Liam Smith, Under 11 – Will Bacon & Tom Davey(joint), Girls – Chloe Ackerley. ‘Most Improved Player’ : Academy – Adam Smith, Under 15 – Bradley Tennens, Under 13 – Tom Hargrave, Under 11 – Jonathon Steele, Girls – Kara Pierce-Saunderson. Leading Run Scorers were : 1st XI – Alex Fitchett(320), A Team – Simon Higgins(669), B Team – Liam Smith(210). Leading Wicket takers were: 1st XI – James Ling(28), A Team – Lee Bedwell(31), B Team – Dan Manley(14). Youth Graduates – Fergus Morgan, Charlie Seaborn, & Ellie J ohnson. ‘Champagne Moment’ – Richard Pierce-Saunderson. ‘Lifetime Achievement’ – Michael Hugman (pic 4). The North Suffolk Under 13, North Suffolk Under 11, & Lady Taverners Suffolk Girls Trophies, all won by Stradbroke, were also presented, along with Skills Certificates to some of the younger members. That’s 2009 put to bed. With an eye to the future, the 30th year starts as did the 25th, with a Pop Quiz on Saturday 16th January (Details elsewhere). After a brief sortie into the world of Greyhound Racing, Annual Horse Race Night reverts to its normal format on Saturday 6th February. It is the 10th Race Night, so lets make it a special one. Posters will appear in the New Year. Finally, on behalf of the Cricket Club, thanks to everyone who has made the Club the success it has been in 2009. Best wishes for Christmas, and more success in 2010. Michael Hugman

Stradbroke Youth Football Club Stradbroke is now one step closer to having a youth football club in the village. At the time of writing, 17 potential players have registered their interest to join, whose ages ranging from 6 to16. Funding has been confirmed from Suffolk Sports Unlimited to help with coaching and both the Stradbroke Charitable Trust and the Parish Council have confirmed their support as and when needed. We have been fortunate to get a top quality coach for the first 3 months of next year. He is Kevin Horlock, an ex Northern Ireland international, West Ham, Man City and Ipswich player. In addition we hope to have at least two Level 1 qualified coaches to support Kevin As for training, we are keeping our options open at the moment, although it will almost certainly be outside, since all indoor facilities in and around Stradbroke are fully booked for next year. We can use both Westhall and the Sports field for training, and depending on numbers and age ranges we may choose to have 2 different age groups. We have also secured the use of some mobile floodlights which means we can train evenings as well as weekends. We will hold our inaugural meeting for all interested parties, both children and parents, in the Village Hall Pavilion on Thursday 3rd December at 6.00pm. This will be the first opportunity for everyone to meet each other and to agree the best training arrangements - so don’t miss it! Don’t forget, if you play for another team, you can still come along to training and benefit from the professional coaching skills being offered. Gardeners Notes We have enjoyed a good November with perfect growing conditions, the grass has kept going and recovered well after a dry summer. Make sure you keep raking up the leaves to stop them killing the grass, it's also worth raking out any thatch in the lawn. Don't be tempted to cut your grass short if you carry on mowing and keeping tidy edges will make it look good throughout the winter. In herbaceous borders it is worth leaving some of the structure from the summer flowering plants, things like Rudbeckias, Echinaceas and Phlomis all stand up well and the birds and insects like them. If we ever get a frost it will look great on the dryed skeletons of the plants. Ornamental grasses also look good now with Miscanthus sinensis being a particularly good plant, varieties such as 'Kleine Fontane' and 'Kleine Silberspinne' are lovely plants with red and silver flower heads respectively. Other grasses worth considering are Stipagigantea (giant oats), Stipa tenuissima (a low growing tactile grass) and Calamagrostis x acutiflora 'Karl Foerster' ( a tall upright plant with red/green flowers). Over the last 10 years grass and herbaceous perennial planting has become very popular but more recently there has been a move to using more shrubs. I have always felt that a good mixture of all three gives a very varied border that changes over the years as the slower growing plants establish. I think some important aspects of planting are to provide interest for as much of the year as possible, this can be achieved using bulbs, structural herbaceous plants and grasses, stem and leaf colour, as well as flowers. If you want your border to florish make sure you plant them in as close an aspect and soil as they would have where they originated from. Plants that offer good value now are various Cornus varieties for their glorious stem colour, especially if cut back hard in the spring. Hellebores Rudbeckias stand up well and the need the old summer leaves birds and insects like them. cut back now to prevent them covering up the emerging winter flowers. The ferns Polystichum and Asplenium are both evergreen and contrast well with each other, they are good in half to full shade and thrive on our neutral to alkaline soil as most ferns prefer an acidic one. Another good plant for semi shade that is coming to an end now but will have been flowering all autumn is Saxifraga 'wada', it has starry white flowers with low growing copper coloured leaves. If you are planning a winter cut back or tidy up don't be tempted to remove ivy flowers as they are one of the only sources of nectar for insects throughout winter, Have a good Christmas and Happy New Year, wait until spring or summer, also you can pile up wood especially in the garden! in corners or under hedges for other places for amphibians and insects to hide away as most are beneficial in the garden at keeping pests away. Make the most of nice days in the garden over the winter as, in my experience, time spent weeding and sorting now saves you hours of getting on top of it in the spring once the weeds start growing. Have a good Christmas and Happy New Year, especially in the garden. Luke
