John McVicar, Headteacher at the Primary School is due to retire at the end of this term. John arrived some 15 years ago at a difficult time for the primary school. He quickly built the confidence of the staff, governors and children. He saw a long held dream realised when the school was finally re-modelled and re-furbished with a major building project. This provided a large new hall, new classrooms, a new library, a staff room and many other much needed improvements. During the work OFSTED arrived to inspect the school but John steered the school through these major upheavals with his usual calmness and determination and the school received a good OFSTED report.

The primary school has four classes of local children, aged between 5 and 11 years of age. Stradbroke and District Pre-school has close links with the school, especially Class 1 and their teacher, Mrs Hill.
Co-ordinating sports day!
John has always demonstrated his commitment to the whole school but most particularly to the children in his care. He has secured the future of the school and will leave a most positive legacy.
John will be much missed by everyone who has known and worked with him not just at Stradbroke but in the many years that he has been teaching and we are all sad to see him leave. However, we wish him a long, happy and well-deserved retirement.! James Hargrave, Chair of Governors Ann Kerr, Vice Chair of Governors.
Friends of Stradbroke Primary School (FoSPS) is run by a committee of dedicated parents. The funds raised by FoSPS at school events have, for example, partially funded school trips and have provided funds in order for the school to redevelop the playgrounds.
The school has two playgrounds, a large field and a number of activity and quiet areas!
The school website is at www.stradbrokevc.suffolk.sch.uk/
Class Four children have the opportunity to learn a brass instrument which is loaned to them free of charge!
The Governing body of the school is made up of staff and Stradbroke residents.

Contact Steve; 388398. Cameo Lunch is held on the second Wednesday of the month at 12.30am. Between 30-40 folk enjoy this time together. We have good food, and plenty of it, quizzes and an assortment of entertainment and welcome anyone who would like to join with us. To book a lunch or find out more contact 384112. Connect meets at 10.30am on the fourth Thursday of each month for a short service followed by coffee and time to chat, contact 384112. Please note the change of day. Facing upwards How lovely it is to see the winter flowering pansies lifting their faces to the watery sun that we are now getting through the clouds-when the weather allows! It seems that they are trying to reach up to bask in any brightness that is available. How wonderful it would be if we human beings would all bask in the glorious presence of the Living God. What an amazing thing Jesus did when He gave His life on the cross and then defeat death by His resurrection so that we could be with Him, living in His presence for ever. When the reality of that really hits us, surely we will praise Him with the whole of our being giving Him those areas of our lives that are not too nice, asking Jesus to help us to be people who are not centred on ourselves, but centred on Him. Could we - stand in worship with heart abandoned in awe of the One who gave it all, to stand before Him and say our hearts Lord we surrender, and-all we have is Yours? Jackie

The Rectory - Tel: 384363 Email: davidstreeter@suffolkonline.net Dear Friends, The Christmas Services were joyful and well-attended. The readers at the Candle-Lit Carol Service were Phoebe, Owen and Fergus Morgan, Poppy Felgate, Grace Deatker, Daphne Cowan-White and Roy Lee with Dougie Chittock at the organ and Graham Johnson on the trumpet. Jack Braithwaite sang the solo first verse of Once in Royal David’s City and the Benefice Choir led our singing. A new team erected, decorated and dismantled the Christmas Tree, the various Nativity Sets in the church were much admired and the Star, over a hundred foot high, brought seasonal joy to many who saw it as a sign of the wonderful news of the Birth of our Saviour. Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, 6th February, with Holy Communion at 10.00 am, and there’s a service on Thursdays at 10.00 am from 14th February until 13th March. Confirmation will be administered by the Bishop of Dunwich in our church on Sunday, 16th March, at 6.30 pm. Please tell me if you, or a member of your family, wish to be prepared for this service, for admission to Holy Communion. A Sponsored Hymn Sing for the Anthony Nolan Trust will take place in the church on 25th March, Easter Tuesday, from 11.00 am - until we have sung fifty verses, which is the challenge “to take back lives from Leukaemia”. I am asking volunteers to join the choir that morning, so that fifty singers will fill our choir stalls. Forty of the verses I am writing myself, or have already done so, on variety of themes about the church and the world! Four well-known hymns, ending with a glorious proclamation of Easter, will complete the programme. I look forward to hearing from those who wish to take part; there will be room for many more in the church, and sponsorship forms will be available shortly for this medical charity which is calling on us to “Sing for Life”. The Rt Revd Nigel Stock, the new Bishop of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich will be visiting our Hoxne Deanery on Monday, 25th February. More details soon. With all good wishes, David Streeter. A Coffee Morning for all interested in Church Flower Arranging is at Marsh Farm, Mill Lane, by invitation of Cyril and Marjorie Roberts, on Wednesday, 27th February, at 10.00 am. Please come to share our floral planning for the coming year.

NEXT PARISH COUNCIL MEETING: Monday 11th February 2008 7.30pm At the Community Centre .
The meeting was again addressed by Ian Good of Flagship Housing on the future of the HEART Foyer.
Stradbroke Parish Council The Parish Pump! Public Forum: The meeting was again addressed by Ian Good of Flagship Housing on the future of the HEART Foyer. The building is on the market and should be sold at auction in February. Half of the receipts is to be preserved to fund affordable housing within the village at an appropriate time in the future. The Chairman, on behalf of the Council, thanked Mr Good for taking the time to speak to the meeting and it was hoped this spirit of cooperation would continue. Planning: The following decisions granting Planning Approval had been received from Mid Suffolk District Council: 0529/07 – erection of two storey side & rear extension Felix Cottage, Wilby Rd 3097/07 – insert double external doors in place of existing small window Foxley Cottage, Doctors Ln 1987/07 – re-instatement of previous roofline to oldest part of house. Remove existing lean-to extension and build new garden room North Lane Farm, Pixey Gn 3625/07 – as above listed building consent 3147/07 – erection of detached garage & workshop Lilacs, Laxfield Road 3550/07 – erection of one & half storey rear extension Orchard House, Neaves Ln The following items were considered: 3907/07 – change of land use and erection of barn & on-site toilet blockc/w dry store Three Corners, Laxfield Road 3679/07 – erection of 3 new dwellings and garages Street Farm, Laxfield Road 3981/07 – erection of bungalow and double garage Land rear of Drapers Hill Farmhouse, Laxfield Road The Council recommended approval of the above applications.
Other Business: The Play Parks at the Community Centre & Westhall have been inspected and both received satisfactory reports. PC Green was called away before he could address the meeting. Cllr Guy McGregor attended, presenting a brief report, which centred on Ipswich’s rejected bid for Unitary Status. The Parish Council’s response to the consultation to the Site Specific Land Bids was discussed. Criteria were drawn up in 2003 and the bids were ranked according to these criteria. These were the subject of a public consultation at the time. Little has changed since then apart from an important amendment to Bids 4h, 5h & 6h. 5h had been changed from housing to recreational/leisure use, 4h has been reduced and 6h has been withdrawn The Council agreed this would be beneficial to the village by preserving and conserving an area of historical and environmental importance and providing a village green. This site also provided an area of amenity and benefited views in and out of the village. Thus the Parish Council ranked the bids 4h and 5h as their first preference for any extension to the settlement boundary and Bids 14h and 15LR as their second preference. “Our first meeting of this year went with a swing. With business concluded, our president warmly welcomed 3 new members; what a great way to start 2008!”
Our December meeting was our Christmas celebration; a sumptuous meal, beautifully served with entertainment by the `Minstrels’. A very good way to end 2007. Our first meeting of this year went with a swing. With business concluded, our president warmly welcomed 3 new members; what a great way to start 2008! So welcome to Dianne, Amanda and Daphne. Irene Rogers told us about a family wedding she and her husband attended recently in India. It sounded very different but very interesting and she had some beautiful photographs to show us. Thank you Irene, I would dearly love to try on one of those colourful saris. Our evening was called `Banter, Booze and Biscuits’ so we finished with a good quiz, `Name the Biscuits’. It was quite hilarious but was won, finally, by Stella Bryant – well done Stella! Our Book Club held its second literary lunch last week that was a great success and much enjoyed by those who were able to make it. A great start for 2008 for our W.I. with our next meeting being on Thursday 14th February at 7.30pm in the Community Centre. Iris Badcock, Press Secretary

Letters to the Editor Dear Sir, Thanks to The Stradbroke Monthly for providing publicity for the Puzzle House Pantomime "Dick Whittington" which ran at St Edmund's Hall, Hoxne, last December. A big thanks, too, to David,Tina and the team at the Stradbroke Post Office for doing such a great job in selling tickets! We will be back with another traditional family pantomime performing "Aladdin" in December 2008. Roy Preston, Puzzle House Pantomimes Sir... “Thanks… A few days before Christmas on a damp cold night a group of about forty hardy souls set forth around the village to sing carols. Elli Darling kindly walked her young pony heavily disguised as a reindeer. We didn’t quite reach all of our destinations but we really enjoyed ourselves. After two and half hours of singing we returned to the Church to enjoy mince pies and mulled wine. Thank you to both the singers and those who contributed to the collection and especially to Ruth & Pete Ryan who provided the excellent musical accompaniment – we raised £231.08 towards the Vestry Roof repair.” Wendy Reeves Sir, “The family of the late Frank Kitchener Tooley would like to express their sincere thanks to everyone for their kind words, cards and letters of sympathy after their sad loss and to all those who attended the funeral.Thank also to the Reverend David Streeter,Thirkettles Funeral Services, and for the donations made to Diabetes UK.” Sir “The sum of £844 was raised this year for The Children’s Society. Stradbroke Cinema Stradbroke Cinema will be showing, The Last King of Scotland , on Thursday, 21st. February, 7 for 7.30 in the Community Centre. The Bar will be open. The film contains strong violence, gruesome images, sex and strong language Successfully intertwining fact and fiction, the “The Last King Of Scotland” brings us one of the year's best performances by Forest Whitaker as murderous Ugandan dictator Idi Amin. It’s hard to believe that an actor previously renowned for his gentleness could play such a monster, but the transformation is seamless. It's the kind of screen-filling turn that eats other actors for breakfast, so kudos to James McAvoy for holding his own as the Scottish medic who dangerously ventures into Amin's circle of trust. Stradbroke Swimming Pool Stradbroke Swimming Pool is launching its range of products and services under a new brand called Everyone Active to help encourage people to become more active during 2008. The launch will include activity planners and new services being introduced to help encourage members of the local community to enjoy activity. This facility is one of 56 leisure centres nationally that is launching Everyone Active to try to beat obesity, inactivity and people’s fear and intimidation for exercise. The acting centre manager Stuart Murdy is certain that this new concept of activity will provide the impetus that many local people will need. “The Everyone Active brand is all about finding activities that you enjoy doing both at the centre or at home and then planning them into daily life. This doesn’t have to mean five visits to the gym a week, we are helping people to commit to 30 minutes of activity a day, five times a week. And activity can be anything from a gym visit or swimming with the family to walking the dog or brisk walking – it’s about making lifestyle adjustments that will have great long term health benefits.” To mark this event Stradbroke Swimming Pool is holding a Free open day on January 27th. The fun starts at 9:00am with free swimming and activities are running throughout the day. Activities on offer include swimming lessons, Snorkelling, Aqua Aerobics, Life Saving Skills and much much more. For more details and to book your free activity contact Stradbroke Swimming Pool on 01379 384376. For more information on your nearest Everyone Active centre visit www.everyoneactive.co.uk or contact centre manager Stuart Murdy, 01379 384376
Stradbroke News & Views Suffolk Family Carers We are an independent charity, our services are free! A Family Carer is defined as any age; ‘looking after’ a relative, friend, partner, parent/s or child/siblings who cannot manage without them because of illness, age or physical, learning or mental health difficulties. Many Family Carers, care for more than one person. The main concerns are when caring impacts on every part of the Family Carers’ life. It is then, especially, that support is needed which is more focused, planned, and often outside the home, with a complete break from the caring role. This we know sustains situations, otherwise there would be many more people cared for in residential homes, hospitals and other establishments. Please call our Helpline for more information; 01473 232679 or visit our website; www.suffolk-carers.co.uk
Fressingfield & Stradbroke Medical Centres During 2007 Stradbroke Health Trust undertook a project to redevelop Stradbroke Medical Centre. We were desperately running out of space and finding the logistics of running our surgeries at Stradbroke increasingly difficulty. We are pleased to announce that the redevelopment is now complete. This development has given us much needed additional space including a new consulting room. Church Treasurer. I said in a previous edition of the magazine that I would let you know how much money was raised from the letter sent to you and, as promised, below is the information. We now have 17 covenants each month as well as several people who have contributed with weekly envelopes and we had about £450 in donations. This will go towards the upkeep of the church. We have just paid over £700 to fill the oil tank up to enable the church buildings to be kept reasonably warm for services. Thank you all, Mary Ellis.
Sports Roundup Stradbroke Football Club We have only played one 1st Team game since the last report losing 4 – 1 to the Salvation Army. The reserves have played Hoxne and lost 4 – 2 and The Salvation Army and lost 5 – 6 and matches have been cancelled due to the waterlogged pitch. The last Bingo on January 11th raised £83.60 and the next one is on the Mary Ellis 8th February. Thank you for your support.
Stradbroke Cricket Club 2008 has dawned with some good news for the profile of the Cricket Club as a breeding ground for young cricketers. After the County Age Group trials, Sam Johnson has been selected for the Suffolk Under 15 squad. Well done to Sam for his persistence. Surjay Rughani (Under 14), Liam Joe Smith & Daniel Taylor (Under 12) missed out on County selection., but all three made the Mid Suffolk District squads. Our hunch that the good folk of the village were bored after Christmas and needed something to stimulate them was proved correct as 18 teams entered our Pop Music Quiz, raising £395 for Club funds. The winners were the ‘Randy Warhols’ runners-up were ‘A Whiter Shade of Ale’, and ‘Gerry Needs a Pacemaker’ won the prize for the most original team name. Thanks are due to Marty Norris for his hard work. The fund raising events come thick & fast, with the Annual HORSE RACE NIGHT, on Saturday 2nd February, at the Community Centre, 1st Race 7.30pm, sharp. If you want to come along, it will cost £6 per person, which includes a Fish & Chip Supper. To ensure there is enough to feed everyone, please let me know numbers by Monday 28th January, on 01379-384433 or 07796-465347. There we are. It is only January and your local Cricket Club has offered you a quiz, Race Night, & a pathway to success for young cricketers. We have a lot to live up to in 2008. Be part of it. Thank you. The London Marathon Hi there, my name is Don, I’m retired and live with my wife Carol and daughters Elli and Adeline at Frythe Barn (that’s the recently converted barn on the Wilby Road just opposite the TransAm site) and I plan to run in the London Marathon (along with about 45,000 others). Why am I running in the London Marathon? Well to be honest – I don’t really know, but it seemed like a good idea at the time! We moved to Suffolk about 2 years ago after I retired and then spent the last 18 months converting on old barn at Wootten Green Farm. With the barn finished there seemed to be something missing - I began to realise I was in fact retired. I woke up one morning and said to Carol “I need another project” to which she replied “I agree, you’re beginning to get under my feet”.It needed to be a challenge, something charitable, and to get me ‘out of the house’– and so the idea of running the marathon was born. But, could I get a place? Individual entries closed back in August and the race was fully subscribed. The only solution was to persuade one of the charity organizations to offer me a ‘Gold Bond’ place. These are allocated to the charities every year, who then give them to suitable candidates on the proviso that they pledge to raise a minimum sum - typically about £1500. By December most of the Gold Places had gone, but I managed to secure a place with the Elimination of Leukaemia Fund (www.elf-fund.org.uk). Why did I choose ELF ? ELF was in fact a natural choice for me. A colleague, a friend and a member of my family all suffered from Leukaemia and when ELF offered me a place it seemed almost as if fate had played a hand. Many years ago, a young technical assistant who worked for me developed Leukaemia and sadly died after about 18months suffering. Some years later the daughter of a close friend was stricken, but thankfully she recovered. Finally, only a few years ago, the disease struck much closer to home and my elder sister was diagnosed with the disease at the age of 60 – she died 6 weeks later. So I feel as if ELF actually chose me rather than the reverse. So... why am I telling you all this? Well, not surprisingly I need a lot of help! I have never done any serious endurance running in my life. Although I am reasonably fit, having played football for most of my adult life, running 26+ miles is a bit daunting! I thought I’d start with an initial jog round Wilby/Horham/Stradbroke just to see what shape I was in - that was a mistake; this was definitely not going to be easy! Since then, you may have seen me jogging through the village in my ‘Vitality’ top with my faithful dog, Santos, running alongside. Any moral support would be welcome; also during the next 3 months you may also be approached by me, Carol or one of our friends for your “practical support”. Whatever you can spare, no matter how small, will be gratefully received and go to a very worthy cause. I have pledged to raise £1500, but if I exceed this, I would like to donate the difference to local charities in the Stradbroke area, more details of this later. Finally, is anyone else in Stradbroke planning to run the Marathon? If so I’d love them to contact me to (A) see if we can pool our fund raising efforts in the village, and (B) for mutual, moral support in sharing our trials and tribulations during the long run-up to the race. Please feel free to contact me either by phone, email or simply just drop by the barn for a chat. Thank you for taking the time to read this and for your support in the weeks ahead. Local Gardeners Notes At this time of year, it’s about the last time I think of tidying up from last year and start thinking about preparing for the year ahead. Once I get to the end of January, the year starts to fly by and I seem to be playing catch up! The season starts with early bulbs like Snowdrops and Aconites and continues with Hellebores. Prunus x Subhirtilla ‘ Autumnalis` (winter flowering Cherry) is a worthy tree to have in any garden at this time of year, Sarcococca Confusa (Christmas Box) with it’s Jasmin scented winter flowers and also Wintersweet (chimonanthus praecox) add fragrance particularly if placed near to paths or doorways. If you grow vegetables now is the time to get your seed catalogues and order seeds ready to start sowing in spring. Onion sets and potatoes should be ordered now. I try to use the quieter months of January and February to tidy up, sort out pots ready for sowing in the spring and also for cleaning out the greenhouse to get rid of pests and clean the glass. Have a good hunt behind pots and logs for slugs and snails and get rid of them. Any work done now on the flowerbeds will save hours in the spring and summer. Once you have split any herbaceous plants that are getting too big or you want moved, cut back last years growth and do a good weed around, then mulch with leaf mould or something similar. Doing this not only reduces the weeding but also improves soil structure and aids moisture retention in the summer. Make sure you cut a deep edge to the bed as this prevents the birds from flicking it onto the lawn. Things to look out for this month in the garden are the structure that box gives you with its fresh green clipped into shape. Yew also makes great topiary. Grasses and seed heads, when frosted on a sunny day, Snowdrops look as good as any mid summer border. If you have a good sunny position on free draining soil, Iris ungincularis (Algerian Iris) will flower throughout the winter with beautiful blue flowers in evergreen foliage. I have found that, contrary to belief, Witch Hazel does seem to tolerate the neutral clay around here. Mahonias have a bad press because of over use around car parks and their prickly foliage but are fantastic back of the border plants and have surprisingly fragrant flowers. Viburnum x Bodnantense `Dawn’ is good to place somewhere only visible in the winter to enjoy the pinky white flowers as it’s not a pretty summer shrub. Finally, Daphnes are one of the sweetest smelling winter flowering shrubs and well worth the risk as they either like you or hate you with about half curling up their toes (free draining soil, not too much or too little sun) If you are looking for a longish walk with good views back towards the village, take the footpath just out of the village on the Diss road to Pixey green then back around to the cemetery making use of the new path along the Laxfield Road back to the village.
