Facing the New Year with courage When you try something for the first time, you need courage. On learning to walk you first tried standing on shaking limbs, smiled, then cried because you fell over until at last you mastered the art of learning to balance. Then came the walking stage. Someone encouraged you by saying “Come on, you can do it!” It was not easy, but sheer determination prevailed and off you went, heading your way into your parents arms who kept on encouraging you to do it and suddenly - hey presto, you have been doing it ever since! Growing, and stepping out in your faith is not an easy thing, you can’t put a CD Rom into your life and download the contents. You have to work at it by trusting in God. Jesus didn’t say it would be easy, and believe me it certainly is not an easy ride but God stretches out his arms and says “Come on, you can do it, I am here to help you” We also need to pray, read scripture and meet with other Christians, which will help us to grow in our faith. We have just celebrated Christmas, sung about Emmanuel, which means “God with us” and, He really is with us, otherwise He wouldn’t have said “ I am with you always” Reach out to God this New Year, and find his arms there to hold you and help you to be of good courage. Knowing Christ will bring you peace and courage to face the future.

All Saints Church Fund Raising Committee We would like to thank all of our supporters for their continuing involvement over the year and wish everyone a Happy Christmas and a Peaceful 2008. I would like to remind anyone with unwanted gifts, that they couldn’t find a home for, that they would make wonderful prizes for our many raffles and help to generate much needed funds for the Church. I think the Village and Church congregation would like to thank Rev and Mrs Streeter for all their hard work for the flower festival which made approximately £1,600 and provided such a wonderful display. We have a full program of events for next year starting with a Cake Stall on January 19th, a Pancake and Beetles on 5th Feb and many, many more. Watch this space for more information. Mary Ellis
The Rectory - Tel: 384363 Email: davidstreeter@suffolkonline.net Dear Friends, The Flower Festival was a wonderful success, raising £1,600 for us, and the 160 entries in the Visitors’ Book represented the comments of many more who said it was their best flower festival ever, and that they had never seen Stradbroke Church looking so beautiful. Please help us to keep up these high standards. There are many ways in which you can be linked to All Saints, not only by attending services, but also giving us your talents and your time, with donations for the upkeep of the building and its ministries, and: Flower Arranging, Learning to Ring the Bells, Baking Cakes, Embroidery, Making Music with your voice or an instrument, Reading the Lessons, Dusting and Polishing, Helping to keep our historical records in order, and much more! Do give your name to me, or to one of the church officers whose names are on the Notice Board in Church Street, to see what we can do together. Outside, the churchyard paths are being edged and tidied, that all may look its best, to the Glory of God. The Candle-Lit Carol Service is at 6.30 pm on Sunday 16th, with glorious lights, sounds and voices to create a joyful atmosphere in which to hear and sing the Story of the Incarnation of Jesus Christ. Christmas Eve is a Monday. The Blessing of the Crib, in the Manger within the Stable, takes our hopes and prayers to the town and the land where Jesus was born. Our tall tree, topped by a star like the 100 ft. tower, fills the church’s darkness here with its multiple lights as a sign of God’s love for his world. Many thanks for the gifts on Advent Sunday, which will be much appreciated as Christmas presents. Christmas Day begins before midnight on Monday evening, at 11.30 pm, when all are welcome for the Service of Holy Communion with Carols, and continues on Tuesday at 8.00 and 10.30 am, and The Epiphany Family Communion on 6th January, 2008, completes The Twelve Days of Christmas. On Sunday, 16th March, The Bishop will administer Confirmation in our church. Please tell me if you, or a member of your family, wish to be prepared for this service, for admission to Holy Communion. With all good wishes for Christmas and the New Year, David and Margaret Streeter.

Stradbroke Parish Council The Parish Pump! Parish Council Meeting
NEXT PARISH COUNCIL MEETING: Monday 14th January 2008 7.30pm At the Community Centre .
10 December 2007
Public Forum: The meeting was addressed by Ian Good of Flagship Housing on the future of the HEART Foyer. He reported that it was likely that the hostel would be sold on the open market. The Council was disappointed that it had not been given the opportunity to contribute to discussions on possible uses for the building and felt that it would be better if the property could be made available as affordable housing. It was decided that representations would be made to the relevant bodies to ensure that its views were known. Planning: The following item was considered: 3550/07 erection of 1.5 storey rear extension - Orchard House, Neaves Lane The Council agreed to recommend approval of the above item. 0661/07 change of use of 3 x holiday homes to single residence - Water Meadow Cottages, Neaves Lane is to go to appeal.
The Parish Council wishes everyone a happy, healthy and prosperous 2008!
Other Business: The Play Parks at the Community Centre & Westhall are now complete apart from the painting of the older equipment. This should be undertaken in the New Year. The damaged Cemetery railings are in the process of refurbishment. The Chairman was pleased to report on the official opening of the footpath to the Cemetery by County Councillor Guy McGregor. The path was walked and all partook of mince pies and mulled wine at the end. The Council formally expressed its thanks to Cllr Mark Peacock for the clearing of debris around the chapel and path and also to all who helped with the clean up. PC Green had little to report to the meeting but emphasised the need to be vigilant over the Christmas period when opportunist thieves frequently targeted properties where gifts placed under the tree were easily seen through windows. The Parish Council wishes everyone a happy, healthy and prosperous 2008. Clerk to the Parish Council: Carol A Smy

On behalf of The Branch I thank our ‘Poppy Appeal Organisers’ for their excellent collections this year. In Stradbroke Jeremy Higgins reports a present total of £2779 with more to be received, and Ted Bootle from Laxfield has a final total of £2095.70, which is £400 more than last year, and equivalent to £2.50 per person throughout the village. Very well done to you both, and also very well done of course to all the collectors and helpers. Our 2008 Annual Branch Dinner is to be held on Friday 14th March about which all members will be receiving letters in The New Year. Branch Officers Ted Bootle, Roger Gwyn and myself met local MP Sir Michael Lord recently, and we stated our concerns as to the current situation with the dependants, and the needs of our Servicemen and Service Women. The meeting was in support of The Royal British Legion’s ‘Honour The Covenant Campaign. As a County Vice President I attended a recent Suffolk County RBL Committee Meeting with Nick Eade from Fressingfield, who is our new H Group representative. The main topic was the closure of RBL Branches with the latest being Wortham. Sadly during my time in The Legion Yaxley, Thorndon, The Thornhams, Mellis, Stoke Ash, Mendlesham, Gislingham, Dennington, Worlingworth have all closed and Eye is now a Sub-branch of Fressingfield. How lucky Stradbroke is to still have an active Branch with over 80 members to enable us to continue to assist both ex Service people and their dependants, and also the families of those still serving and engaged in Military Operations throughout The World. Michael Burton – Branch Chairman.

Neighbourhood Watch
Stradbroke Good Neighbours - Just a phone call away.
I am Nicholas Thompson, your Neighbourhood Watch co-ordinator. I am the point of contact in Stradbroke for the Police to distribute crime reduction advice to local residents. Information from the Police will be published when necessary in this magazine and elsewhere. This Neighbourhood Watch scheme is often successful at reducing crime because many people, young and old, report suspected criminal activity promptly to the Police. I am not a policeman so you should report suspicious activity on the following telephone numbers: Emergencies: 999. Non-urgent calls charged at a local rate to the following police switchboards: 01473 613500 (first choice) or 01986 835300. I am your point of contact if you wish to discuss crime issues with me: 01379 388977. Residents should be aware that there has been a burglary in the Stradbroke area recently. Nicholas Thompson

The SLHG December meeting was a Christmas get together for members and was held at The Priory. Everyone had a thoroughly enjoyable time and the quiz was slightly unusual as it tested people’s memories of “Radio Theme Tunes” since 1945. Happy confusion reigned as “Ooh I know that one…” and “it’s on the tip of my tongue...“ but eventually they were all identified and more and more memories of presenters and Sunday lunchtimes of old came flooding back. As one of our regular SLHG meetings next year we shall have a similar quiz so everyone can join in the fun!
The picture of Ellis the Butchers “Xmas 1913” and the remark that there were “ few turkeys on show” drew a very logical explanation from Harold Grayston of New Street. As he pointed out virtually everyone kept poultry themselves and any local turkeys were sold and sent to London rather than displayed and sold locally. Harold also talked to us about his time in the Royal Observer Corps in Stradbroke both during and after WW2 and we shall put this into one of our forthcoming Archive Slideshows. Where are the turkeys and poultry?

Letters to the Editor Sir, “After the WI Craft Exhibition was finished a parcel containing 2 cardboard Thomas books plus another Thomas Book and a small bottle won on the Tombola was found. Sir, “I should like to express my gratitude to all those involved in the staging of the Stradbroke Flower Festival 2007 to celebrate the Diamond Wedding Anniversary of the Queen and Prince Philip. The flower arrangements were sublime and done with skill and imagination succeeding in lifting our spirits in the dark days of winter. The added dimension of the excellent and varied musical events was simply the icing on the (wedding) cake! The people of Stradbroke are indeed fortunate to have those among them who are able to plan and carryout this kind of event, which gives so much pleasure to the rest of us.” Thank You, Daphne Cowan-White Sir, “I would like to thank David Streeter for the wonderful flower festival he organized in All Saints Church, celebrating the Diamond wedding anniversary of the Queen and Prince Philip. It was a truly memorable week of flowers, concerts and a special evensong. Visitors from far beyond our parish enjoyed the flowers and they were all amazed and so complimentary about the abundance of arrangements, the lighting effects and our beautiful church. Many said it was the best flower festival that they had ever been to. Although the talent, generosity and time was given by so many people from our local villages, it is thanks to David’s energy and enthusiasm that we all pulled together to celebrate in such style and to give pleasure to hundreds of people. In the words of one visitor: ’Oh! If only the Queen could have seen it.’“ Alison Hackett Sir “I would like to congratulate the Rev: David Streeter and his wife Margaret, for the very successful “Festival of Flowers and Music”, to mark the occasion of the Queens Diamond Wedding Anniversary.” Patricia Fill Sir “David and the staff would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy and Peaceful New Year. Thank you for your support throughout the year which has kept us safe from the last round of closures. “ Stradbroke Post Office If anyone has photos of the Flower festival, or any other Stradbroke related photos and would like to have them shared on the village website, please email them to photos@stradbroke.org.uk with the file names as the captions. We would be very pleased to receive them! Ed.

A Cinema in Stradbroke presents... 17th. Jan. 7.00for 7.30 pm. In the Community centre. Amazing Grace, based on the life of antislavery pioneer William Wilberforce, is directed by Michael Apted from an original screenplay written by Academy Award® nominee Steven Knight The film stars Ioan Gruffudd, Albert Finney, Romola Garai, Michael Gambon Benedict Cumberbatch, Rufus Sewell, Ciaran Hinds and introduces Youssou N'Dour. It is a film about a great and good man, and the evils of the slave trade. William Wilberforce was a selfless pioneer in the reform of social abuses. He’s best remembered for his eventually successful campaign for the abolition of the slave trade. Amazing Grace tells the story of this campaign, which had been begun by the Quakers, and educates it’s audience as to the millions of deaths and terrible suffering involved in the transport of slaves from Africa, as well as to their appalling suffering in sugar plantations. In February we will be showing “The last King of Scotland” and more about this film can be found in the February edition of the magazine.

Stradbroke News & Views Suffolk Family Carers We are an independent charity, our services are free! A Family Carer is defined as any age; ‘looking after’ a relative, friend, partner, parent/s or child/siblings who cannot manage without them because of illness, age or physical, learning or mental health difficulties. Many Family Carers, care for more than one person. The main concerns are when caring impacts on every part of the Family Carers’ life. It is then, especially, that support is needed which is more focused, planned, and often outside the home, with a complete break from the caring role. This we know sustains situations, otherwise there would be many more people cared for in residential homes, hospitals and other establishments. Please call our Helpline for more information; 01473 232679 or visit our website; www.suffolk-carers.co.uk

Sports Roundup Stradbroke White Hart Bowls Club A.G.M. 2007 The annual general meeting of the Stradbroke White Hart Bowls club was held at the Queens Head, Stradbroke on Wednesday 24th October 2007. Chairman Mike Readman gave his report, announcing that we had a good year of bowling despite the wet weather which caused a backlog of fixtures. We finished in 5th place in the Waveney League which was an excellent result after our poor start. He congratulated all the winners of our own club trophies and noted that all the competitions were well supported again, special thanks to Tony Brown for organising the Club Singles and Pairs. There was a good turn out for Yarmouth again where we finished fourth, and for the second year running the Ellis Cup went back to Stradbroke and District. The downside to the season was Mark the landlords’ sudden departure at the end of the season, which now sees the pub closed. Captain Mike Ransome thanked everyone for playing all the games they were asked, we did have a poor start but we rallied and did well to finish 5th in the Waveney League. We played a total of 32 games winning 12, losing 19 and drawing just 1. Mike also thanked all the committee for all the work they do throughout the year and Malcolm for his efforts on the green. A special thank you to his wife Sheila who accompanied us to every game and always helped to collect money at the end of the game and to sell raffle tickets at home games etc, etc. Treasurer Val Ransome reported that the accounts had been audited and a copy was available if people wished to study them. The balance on account at the end of September 2007 was £419.87 Election of Officers: - There were no other nominees for any jobs and no vacancies as all the officers and committee elected to stand for another year. It was therefore proposed by U Ward and seconded by V Tomson that they be re-elected en-bloc. Membership Fees are to increase to £25 and £15 concessions. Rink fees home and away and club competitions will increase to £2. Presentation Evening: - This has been put on hold for now to see if we get a new landlord by the spring of 2008. If so we will have a buffet at the White Hart early in March, if not we will look into going to the Queens Head. Fundraising: - The jive club are having a dance in March or April 2008, and they are happy for us to use this as an opportunity to run a raffle for our club funds. Social Calendar: - The carpet bowls at Syleham and Wingfield Village Hall was a good event last year, Val was asked to see if this could be arranged again for this year. The paying in night was set for Wednesday 9th April 2008 Roger Ward proposed a vote of thanks to Jim and Elaine for allowing us to hold the meeting in the Suffolk Room of the Queens Head. Stradbroke Cricket Club Despite being at the furthest point from the cricket season, the Cricket Club keeps its wheels turning. Next years fixtures are done (available soon), trophies collected by the victorious A Team at the recent MSC Suffolk League awards dinner, and winter net practice is in full swing. More importantly, fund raising continues apace. Just a reminder that there is a Pop Music Quiz on Saturday 12th January 2008, 7.30pm @ Community Centre. Teams of 4. It will cost £3 per person. There will be refreshments, Bar, Raffle, and a prize to the winning team. It should be great fun. Following that, later than its usual slot, is the Annual Horse Race Evening, @ Community Centre on Saturday 2nd February 2008. All the usual attractions will be there: 8 Horse Races on DVD, betting facilities from 50p, the chance to own your own horse for just £2, Bar, Raffle, and of course Fish & Chip Supper. 1st race is 7.30pm (sharp). All this for just £6 per person. In order to cater for everyone, please book in with me on 01379-384433 by Monday 28th January at the latest, you can pay on the night. If you have been before, you know how much fun it is, tell you friends, it is the perfect antidote to the January blues. Happy Christmas from your local Cricket Club. Michael Hugman
