What is ice cream? See how it is made, talk with the experts, find out about healthy (and not so healthy) ice creams, taste the good, the bad and the ugly! Find out if ice cream is the same all over the world. Taste products from around the world; which is the best - Italian, American, Swedish, or good old fashioned Cream of Cornish!

A Quiz to end all quizzes! If you put all the Magnums in the world end to end, how far would they go? Ice Cream was invented by the Chinese, like most things, but who brought it to England? Where would you eat salty ice cream and ice cream with chilli?

Make your own! With help from the experts, make your very own products. Choose your ingredients, mix them, create the product and then, the enjoyable bit – eat it!

Ice Cream competition for children! If you are 10 or under, you can enter a competition to design a new unique ice cream. The winner of the competition will have their ice cream made by professionals and presented to them on July 5th. Entry forms will be available in and around the village from June 5th. The forms should be returned to me no later than June 20th when a panel of judges will select the winning innovation. We will then arrange for this unique product to be made by professional ice cream makers in time for presentation on July 5th. Mums and Dads - get the kids thinking now. This will be an afternoon of fun and entertainment for all the family. Don’t miss it, you will not be disappointed.

Be Warned - Don’t have a big lunch! Wendy Reeves, Friends of All Saints Church

Stradbroke Baptist Church Our Sunday worship commences at 10.15am. During this time together, we hold Junior Church most Sundays and offer tea, coffee and biscuits after the service, which gives folk time to chat afterwards. We do not have a pastor, however Eric our Elder will be pleased to talk with you. Being in control You may have read last month about the calming of the waves when Jesus was involved in a storm on the Sea of Galilee. Well, God has a habit of doing things more than once to convince us that He really is in control of things. Back in the old Testament of the Bible, He was showing his power by bringing the Israelites’ out from the slavery of the Egyptians, taking them to the Promised Land just as He said He would, giving them the guidance that they needed as they travelled through the desert, parting the Red Sea and providing food and water for them. If you have ever been in the Sinai Desert, you will understand just how isolated they were and how dark (and cold) it is when night falls, but even then He provided them with light so that they would know that He was present with them. God can be with us in our worst hours if only we would ask Him to be the light in the darkness of those difficult times by calming our deepest fears, comforting us in our sorrows, tending our wounds when we are hurting because of what life has thrown at us. Jesus calms the storm, lights our path, comforts us in our trials, and soothes our pains. If you really want to find out more about this God of whom we commend to you, why not come on a Sunday morning at 10.15, and see what Christianity, and knowing what Jesus is all about. Is that a challenge too great? Or is it something that you want to find more about? The invitation is for you, right now, where you are in your circumstances. Come and question us, find out more – what have you to lose? God bless you, Jackie Services for June 1 8 15 22 29

The Rectory - Tel: 384363 Email: davidstreeter@suffolkonline.net Most people now know that Revd David Streeter has been quite ill in hospital, although much more comfortable as I write, and improving each day. David would like to thank everyone who has sent cards, good wishes, prayed and visited, all of which have helped him so much. While he is recovering we are trying to provide appropriate services and support in the parish, but there may be changes, so watch the notice board outside the church. A piece from The Path to Hope by Leonardo Boff struck a chord with me, amid the catastrophe of the recent cyclone and earthquake. He said, ‘God does not explain why there is suffering – God suffers alongside us. God does not explain why there is sorrow – God becomes the sorrowful one.’ We think and pray for all those affected by the disasters, that they can eventually turn to their God. Our own troubles can be difficult to bear when we are in the midst of them, bowed down under personal grief, stress or worry. We can take comfort that we are not alone in our vast loneliness – God is with us. Jennifer Chetwynd, Lay Elder Garden Supper Our annual visit to The Old Doctor’s House, for a Garden Supper, is on Tuesday 8th July, from 6 pm. Old friends, and new, are warmly welcomed with good, home cooked food and a glass or two of wine in a wonderful setting. Get your ticket, from Jennifer, The Old Byre, New St. or phone 384069. Fund Raising We have another Cake Stall at 8.30 am onwards on the 31st May so anything saleable will be welcome. A questionnaire was received inviting comments on the future process. Suffolk Family Carers

PC Tim Green will be in the library on Thursday 26th June , 1100 to 1130 to meet anyone who wishes to speak to him.

We are an independent charity, our services are free! A Family Carer is defined as any age; ‘looking after’ a relative, friend, partner, parent/s or child/siblings who cannot manage without them because of illness, age or physical, learning or mental health difficulties. Many Family Carers, care for more than one person. The main concerns are when caring impacts on every part of the Family Carers’ life. It is then, especially, that support is needed which is more focused, planned, and often outside the home, with a complete break from the caring role. This we know sustains situations, otherwise there would be many more people cared for in residential homes, hospitals and other establishments. Please call our Helpline for more information; 01473 232679 or visit our website; www.suffolk-carers.co.uk

Stradbroke Primary School It has been a busy few weeks since my appointment commenced and I already feel very established at the school. We had some exciting news this week- we have gained Bronze Eco-School Status and received our award! Class 4 have been busy practising in our Brass Band- they are fortunate to have been invited to perform at this years Jazz Festival, the children are extremely proud and excited about this. Class 3 have been learning about what Stradbroke was like in the past. They have also attended a school trip this week to the Suffolk Agricultural Farm Day and learnt more about our rural heritage. Class 2 have settled in well with their new teacher Miss Inman. I observed a fantastic maths lesson this week in Class 2 which began with a song “We’re alert, alive and enthusiastic”, who could ask for more! Finally our youngest learners in Year One have been exploring fruit and vegetables. We are encouraging the pupils to eat healthily and the children have produced fabulous pictures for display. The Stradbroke Primary Summer fete will take place on 12th of July this year. Our FOSPs (Friends of the School) are working hard to organise this and look out for further information. Melanie Barrow, Headteacher of Stradbroke CEVC Primary.

KE STRADBRO PRIMARY ! NEWSFLASH

As part of our commitment towards achieving Eco-school status we are hoping to create an outdoor classroom for our school. This does exactly what it says on the tin! It will be an area where children can work outside with tables and chairs made of tree trunks. With this in mind I am hoping to enlist the help of anyone out there who can provide the tree trunks, help with transporting them to school or in any other way. It is hoped to arrange a working party (founder members Mr and Mrs Sullivan and Mr and Mrs Barrow!) in the not too distant future when all help will be very welcome in assembling and arranging the area. If you can help in anyway or would like further details please contact me. So, all you farmers, tree surgeons, gardeners, carpenters and DIY enthusiasts, see what you can do to help the pupils of Stradbroke Primary! A project like this can cost thousands of pounds but with your help we hope to achieve our goal. We are therefore also looking for sponsorship from local businesses and individuals. Perhaps you could sponsor one of our seats for a small donation! Every little helps. I look forward to hearing from you and the completion of an exciting project. Mrs Brenda Sullivan Class 3 Teacher

Stradbroke & District Pre-School with Stradbroke Bumps, Babies & Toddler Group. The topic for the next half term will be ‘Food and Travel’. The children will make and eat food from these countries as well as painting flags and even more arty projects! A Junior Art Exhibition will be held on 4th and 5th of July at the Baptist Chapel, displaying works of art created by the Pre-School children – more details will be in the next edition. Stradbroke & District Pre-School is held every weekday from 9am – 11:30am during term time in the grounds of the primary school. Horham Bygones Country Rally Saturday 14th June 2008 Originally started in 2002, as a one-off event to celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee, the Horham Bygones Country Rally has now become a fixture in the East Anglian rally enthusiast’s calendar, and an annual feature in the small Suffolk village of Horham. Not only does the event generate much needed funds for the Horham and Athelington Community Council, it also offers all types of charities, including the Royal British Legion and East Anglian Children’s Hospice, the opportunity to attend, free of charge, in order to promote their organizations and raise funds. The rally includes displays of bygone tractors, classic cars, commercial vehicles, military vehicles, stationary engines, cycles, auto-cycles, motorcycles and various scale models. There are also numerous trade stands and a car boot sale should you feel the need to ‘grab’ a bargain or two. Displays of tractor ploughing, on a dedicated ‘working’ field, with Robbie, the Shire horse providing his own one horse power display, are always popular. This year sees the removal of the funfair, being replaced by rides, etc. for smaller children. The Fire Service Preservation Group provides displays of fire fighting and rescue techniques during the day. At last year’s rally, when the chimney of the fish and chip catering unit caught fire, they managed to extinguish the blaze before the Stradbroke Fire Tender arrived. Although we can’t promise to provide similar excitement this year! Ample and varied catering outlets including hog roast, rolls and sandwiches, burgers, hotdogs, jacket potatoes, fish and chips and, of course, ice-cream, sweets and candy floss are available. There is also be a licensed bar in the community centre. The entrance fee for the rally is reasonably priced at £4.00 for adults, £2.00 for concessions, £10.00 for a family ticket with accompanied under fives being free. Free car parking is provided in an adjacent field and there is limited disabled car parking on site. On Sunday there is a tractor and auto-cycle road run organised on behalf of East Anglian Children’s Hospice. Starting at 10.00am from the community centre and travelling through the local countryside. Sponsorship and donations for E.A.C.H. are always welcomed. Full details of the rally, including details and photographs of the 2007 rally, can be found on the website www.horhambygones.co.uk Martin

Local Gardeners Notes June is the month that even the most occasional of gardeners ventures out. If you don't do anything else keep your grass and edges neat and even the most neglected gardens should look the part (ours is an excellent example). If you watched Chelsea on television (the garden show, not the football team's trip to Russia) you will have noticed the exceptional show gardens and a definite move away from naturalistic perennial planting using grasses and wild looking flowers to a much simpler colour pallet, green being the colour of choise. This works really well particularly if your garden is not in full sun. Choose plants like topiary box, choiya ternata and hebe rakiensis as the structure and then use paenias, ornamental rhubarbs (Rheum palmatum), astrantias, anemones and iris for good green foliage and dots of colour, keeping away from varigation. The other thing I noticed is that as water becomes more precious, more people want to include it in their gardens, from ponds in large country gardens to small water features in a courtyard. What makes this interesting is that some of the very first gardens were created in Persia, and water was the dominant feature even though it was in short supply. Other things to be thinking about in June, start cutting hedges regularly to keep them looking neat. I try to leave native hedges and just tidy long shoots as birds will be nesting. Box, Topiary Box privet and beech all make fantastic hedges. If we keep getting hot dry spells hoe small weed seedlings and leave them to dry up. Don't be tempted to hoe large weeds or perennial weeds like nettles, bindweed, thistles or ground elder, these are best forked out with their root or if you use weed killers carefully apply a glyphosate based product which goes down to the roots. Prune spring flowering shrubs like forsythia, winter jasmine and viburnum tinus, also winter and spring flowering clematis and jasmines. Many people ask me about clematis montana and when to tidy, wait until is has finished flowering then give it a good cut back if it has got out of hand. Pests will be on the attack, keep a particular eye out for lily beetle (bright red), careful as they drop to the ground if you try to get them falling onto their back so they are harder to see, also greenfly on young shoots of many plants which can be Clematis Montana treated by squirting with water and a bit of washing up liquid, slugs and snails are still a problem but top of the list in rural areas is the rabbit, fencing is really the only real deterrent. Your vegetables should be starting to be productive, but if not it's not too late to start with beans, peas, courgettes, tomatoes, pumpkins and particularly salads as they germinate quickly in the warm weather. Don't be afraid to buy veg plants from the ends of people's drives as this will give you a head start and save you the trouble of growing from seed. I hope it won't be too late when the magazine comes out but if you haven't seen the orchids in the cemetery it's a good excuse for a short walk out of the village. Finally a big thankyou to the Editor for my very first gardening question which was about acanthus and when to cut it back, winter/early spring is best when the foliage is looking untidy and before the new growth starts in spring (I think he just felt sorry for me!). Any questions and I will try to help, to Luke Heydon at The Wheelwrights, Church Street.
