Sports RoundUp
We, the new team, have now been together for a year with this March edition of the Magazine being our 12th publication since we took over and I, for one, have learned a lot in the last 12 months about providing a local magazine! Over the next few editions we will be asking you for your thoughts on how we can develop the magazine; and what are you, the readers, interested to see in the Stradbroke Monthly? We are a well oiled machine - both from an operational point of view (as you will see below) but also our monthly meeting is a jolly evening at the Queens Head Inn! Always a nice incentive to “put the magazine to bed”! So, this month we would like to open up the magazine process so you can see if there are any aspects that you might want to become involved with or help you can offer. The magazine team warmly welcome anyone who’d like to join us in producing your Stradbroke Monthly! Tony Ambler, Editor

Tony Ambler: Editor “My job each month is to gather in all the magazine content. Many people email their submissions, but I also call in at the Post Office and collect handwritten articles, which I then type up onto my computer. Deadline day is always a Friday, so on Saturday morning I check through that I have all the submissions on my computer, then I email them all in one go to Claire who Desk Top Publishers’s (DTP’s) the magazine. Claire and I usually chat via email about any issues that might arise such as missing dates, names, etc… I then go to the Monthly Meeting on the following Monday to proof read the draft magazine ( and have a well earned pint!) Claire gives me the final master copy on Tuesday, and with my helper Dennis Readman, print it out on a very old and annoying printer on Wednesday and Thursday! I then transport it to the Community Centre on Friday for collation!”
Claire Hargrave: DTP “My role starts when about 30 plus articles land in my email on Saturday morning! Last year I set up the magazine template using Microsoft Publisher so now I open up the electronic edition and fill it with all the content that comes from Tony. This usually takes me 8 to 10 hours depending on how much content you have all submitted! As a mother of three, (one of whom is not yet a year old!) I don’t tend to produce the draft in one sitting! A lot gets done in the evenings when the children have finally got to sleep! Once the content is in, I then liaise with Mike who manages the advertising to ensure that any changes to existing adverts or new advertisers are in and up to date. On the Monday afternoon I print out a few full draft copies of the magazine and take it to the monthly meeting where I quite enjoy a couple hours of ‘feet up’ compared to the previous few days! The team proof read the magazine, writing all over it if they find typos and errors, then on Tuesday I do my corrections and print out the masters for Tony. “ Mike Readman: Advertising “ My job is to manage the advertising in the magazine. I maintain a database of advertisers and liase with the Parish Clerk to invoice them yearly. Over the course of each month I field enquiries from prospective advertisers and maintain the ‘queue’ that has developed over the last 12 months! I then speak with Claire via email and we usually meet over ‘magazine weekend’ to go though the magazine to make sure all new adverts and changes are made. Sometimes advertisers submit artwork and sometimes just text so we have to produce an advert for them. I attend the monthly meeting at the pub to help proof read the drafts and discuss the magazine production.” Wendy Reeves: Collation and Distribution “I attend the magazine meeting on Monday to help proof read the magazine, which is the first time I get to see it each month! The next time I see it is Friday when I arrive nice and early at the community centre to set up for our collation day. I currently have a team of six helpers who get together each month with me to collate and staple the magazine. We then sort the magazine into delivery bundles and some bundles are collected, others taken to our delivery volunteers - who then deliver it to you!”

The Simplicity of the Easter Story When Jesus was crucified, he did away with rule-keeping, debt collecting, scoring points, being better than anyone else, and all the religious systems that limit people’s relationship with God and with each other. The message of the cross is, that we are loved by God, forgiven and accepted in a way that we can never experience within a human relationship. Regardless of our history, gender class or colour, we are loved beyond measure in a way that we can never understand. This love can be received as a free gift. No catches or twist and turns, no rituals or strange programmes, but by just having a longing to find peace, harmony, and a deep felt need to be at one with the creator of life. Simple really. In a nutshell, Jesus died to forgive our sin, was raised to life, and lives for eternity, and wants us to be with Him in heaven. You only have to ask him to come into your life. Now how simple is that? Happy Easter. Jackie

All Saints Church Fund Raising Committee Our cake stall in January raised £131; thanks to all who supported this. The Beetles and Pancake Evening was not too well supported but was good fun. I am sorry that no children came but even so we raised £170.20. Our next event is the Easter Craft Fair which is on the 15th of March at 10..00am until 2.00pm in the Community Centre We have stall coming in and we hope to have a fine day. The Art Exhibition, (29th April until the 5th May) is now coming together and I will be giving you more details about it nearer the date. Mary Ellis
The Rectory - Tel: 384363 Email: davidstreeter@suffolkonline.net Dear Friends, The Sponsored Hymn Sing for the Anthony Nolan Trust is taking place in the Church, decorated with Easter flowers, on Tuesday, 25th March, from 11.00 am - until we have sung fifty verses, which is the challenge “to take back lives from Leukaemia”. I am still looking for volunteers to join with the Benefice Choir that morning, so that more than fifty singers will fill our choir stalls. Forty of the verses I’ve written myself, on a variety of themes, some of which have been in the news recently, and others about my activities, and what we do together during the year, in the church and the world! Three well-known hymns, ending with a glorious proclamation of Easter, will complete the programme. Please don’t miss this chance to take part; there will be room for many more inside, to sit, listen and join in. Sponsorship forms are available for this medical charity which is calling on us to “Sing for Life”, to promote bone marrow transplants in the fight against leukaemia. There will be a colourful and varied/ exhibition in the church, on the various subjects about which I have written verses, and light refreshments afterwards – another very good reason for coming to All Saints that day for this very positive event. The Family Service on Mothering Sunday at 10.00 am will have bunches of flowers to be given as tokens of thanks, and afterwards Simnel Cake to be shared and enjoyed. On Palm Sunday the Family Service is at Horham at 11.15 am, and at 6.30 pm the Bishop of Dunwich will lead a Service of Confirmation and Holy Communion. We have one candidate from our four parishes, with many more from other villages nearby. Please be there to welcome the bishop to Stradbroke, and to be part of this joyful service. Donations will be gratefully received by Mary Ellis or Marjorie Roberts, for Easter lilies, to be included in the church flower arrangements in memory of a loved one. With all good wishes for Easter, David and Margaret Streeter

NEXT PARISH COUNCIL MEETING: Monday 10th March 2008 7.30pm At the Community Centre
“Very supportive comments had been made to Councillors about the Stradbroke Monthly.
The clerk is to get in touch with Mid Suffolk District Council to avoid the loss of any small Stradbroke children in long grass...
11 FEBRUARY 2008
Public Forum: No items were brought to the attention of the Council before the commencement of business. Planning: No decisions on Planning Approval had been received from Mid Suffolk District Council since the last meeting. The following items were considered: 3907/07 change of land use to keep horses and erection of barn and on site toilet block with dry store for use as a farrier business (B2) Three Corners, Laxfield Road Additional information had been received for this application. The application went before the planning committee on 13 Feb 08. Decision awaited. No comment was made on this information. 0174/07 erection of detached garage (revised scheme to 3147/07) Lilacs, Laxfield Road The Council supported the above application. Other Business: Information regarding fund raising events for East Anglian Air Ambulance had been received: a murder dinner 25 Apr (Stowmarket); Primrose Festival at Bypass Nurseries 23 Feb - 02 Mar; EAAA lottery (details from the Clerk). An invitation had been issued to the management of the HEART Foyer to meet members of the Council to discuss the use of any ring-fenced funds emanating from the sale of the Foyer in the village for affordable housing but, to date, there had been no response. The length of the grass was mentioned and the Clerk was asked to contact Mid Suffolk to see if it could be attended to before a small child s lost in the undergrowth. The Cemetery railings are now repaired and replaced and look quite splendid. The calendar for The South & Heart of Suffolk Walking Festival 2008 is available and includes a walk around Stradbroke on Sunday 25 May 2008. It starts at 10.30am at the Community Centre and covers 12 miles so you need to be fit and/or energetic! It is essential to book on 01449 676800. Information on other walks in this festival may be obtained through the Tourist Information Centre in Stowmarket on 01449 676800. The Royal British Legion had contacted the Parish Council for its views on providing permanent fixings for the wreaths laid on Remembrance Sunday. The Council was very supportive of this as the photographs provided illustrated that a much enhanced War Memorial would result. Very supportive comments had been made to Councillors about the Stradbroke Monthly. District Councillor Stuart Gemmill noted that funding from central government to the District Council would drastically reduce over the next three years. County Councillor Guy McGregor paid a visit to the meeting to update the Council on County matters. The County element of Council Tax would be the lowest increase in the Eastern Region of a first tier authority which is the only 4* authority. There should be no slashing of services. There would be increased funding for Youth Services. A process of inspection is in place for the maintenance of roadside hedges. The Conference was well supported with 22 Branch Standards in attendance. 25 members and guests attended the February Meeting at The Laxfield King’s Head, and the speaker was John Mauger from Redisham who spoke and showed slides on Horses and Old Carriages. The vote of thanks was proposed by myself. New members Anthony Butler, Alan Saxby, and Douglas Crooks were welcomed plus a visitor from Switzerland Mr Eric Selfs. Mr Prettyman entertained us with `Songs and Poems’ – Suffolk songs and accompanied this with tunes played on the Melodium.
Our February meeting fell on Valentines Day this year, so our competition for the month was a hand made Valentines Card. There were many entries, all superb, but finally a lovely and unusual card made by Rose Tomson won the day. Well-done rose! Mr Prettyman entertained us with `Songs and Poems’ – Suffolk songs and accompanied this with tunes played on the Melodium. I think we all know how to play this instrument now! We joined in the choruses but finished with a traditional song from Norfolk. A different but very enjoyable entertainment. Lily Lofts thanked Mr Prettyman on our behalf and then we all enjoyed tea and heart-shaped cookies – very appropriate! In April, on the 19th, we shall be holding a `Spring Fayre’ in the Community Centre from 10am until 2pm. Please put this into your diary now, you will not want to miss it especially the hot lunches available from 12 noon. Look out for our advert for this in next month magazine. Our next meeting is on Thursday 13th March at 7.30pm in the Community Centre, see you then, Iris Badcock, Press Secretary

The Village Archive Slideshow (No 2) on February 1st was very well attended with over 60 hardy souls braving a very cold night. Thank you for all the supportive comments and particularly thanks to those who brought along items for adding to the archive. We shall produce Slideshow No 3 later this year so watch out for details.
Answers to last month’s Magazine puzzles were: The mill in Stradbroke but which one? It wasn’t Skinner’s or Coles and it burnt down in the late 1800s
It was (we think) ......Farrows Mill out at Battlesea Green. If anyone has any information on Farrow’s Mill or any of the other mills in the area we would love to hear from you!
Did you know where Brown’s Garage was in the village?
It was in the gap between what is today, “Farthings” and Rose Villa on the south side of Church Street opposite Coppings Cottage.
Did you know who; in the late 1800s delivered anything, anywhere?
He was William Meen, a farmer as well as a carrier who collected and delivered throughout the area. He lived at Chestnut Tree Farm, Ashfield Green (where Etheridges Nursery is today) He died in 1902 and was buried in Stradbroke churchyard near the south gate on Church Street.
There will not be an SLHG meeting in March so the next meeting will be in APRIL 2008 and details will be in the next magazine. Mike Readman
Stradbroke & District Pre-School with Stradbroke Bumps, Babies & Toddler Group. Since Christmas the children at Stradbroke & District Pre School have been learning and singing Nursery Rhymes and have created a pretty display of Nursery Rhyme pictures. They have enjoyed Pancake Day by making and eating over 40 pancakes! The children have also celebrated the Chinese New Year by cooking Chinese food, speaking Chinese and meeting a real-life rat who represents this coming year. The topic for the next half term will be ‘Changing Things’, covering “The Hungry Caterpillar”, a Spring walk and (hopefully) the hatching of live chicks in the Pre-School amongst other activities. Stradbroke & District Pre-School is held every weekday from 9am – 11:30am during term time in the grounds of the primary school. Children can attend up to 5 free Pre-School sessions a week from the term after they are 3 years old. Spaces for 2½ year olds are limited and charged at £5.50 per session. Lunch Club is held weekdays from 11:30am – 1:00pm at £3.50 per session for Pre-School children and £2.50 per child attending the reception class at Stradbroke Primary School. For more information please contact Denise Coduri (07958733111) or visit www.stradbrokepreschool.cfsites.org Our fundraiser for this term is our Easter Bingo Night and Easter Raffle to be held on Friday 14th March at 7:30pm at the Community Centre. So far we have prizes from the Diss Express, Orchard Toys based in Wymondham and other local businesses. Mark Peacock Landrovers Ltd will be kindly sponsoring the Christmas Raffle to be held in November. Stradbroke Bumps, Babies and Toddler Group meets every Wednesday 10:00 – 12:00 during term time at the Community Centre. We have a wide range of toys suitable from birth to Pre-School with a craft activity and healthy snack provided for each child. We also have termly visits from the Early Years Family Advisor for weigh-ins and general questions or concerns. On Wednesday 27th February we had a visit from a member of staff from Stradbroke Swimming Pool to discuss swimming opportunities available for our group and to help decide suitable swimming times. This is a great way to meet people in the village and prepare your child for Pre-School in a friendly safe environment. Please contact Zoe on 388398 for more details. Once again thank you for all of your support for this worthy cause and hoping you all have a happy new year. Jan and Barry, 55 Westhall. Editors Note. South and Heart of Suffolk Walking Festival! The very first South and Heart of Suffolk Walking Festival will be taking place this year between 10th & 26th May. This new and exciting Festival will give visitors and local people alike the chance to explore the Suffolk countryside with the aid of local guides, historians and naturalists. The programme is packed with over 40 walks – in a variety of locations, to suit all tastes and capabilities. They include a country ramble along the former towpath of the River Gipping between Needham Market and Ipswich, a medieval meander through the historic wool towns of Lavenham and Long Melford and a walk that visits a wooden ‘henge’ and takes in a scarecrow trail. Many of the walks include a stop off at a Suffolk country pub for lunch or an historic house for afternoon tea. The Festival will appeal to many who wish to visit this lovely part of the County and enjoy its beauty, as author of ‘A Suffolk Summer’ John Appleby did when he wrote: “The English Landscape at its subtlest and loveliest is to be seen in the county of Suffolk”. Further information on all the walks can be found at www.southandheartofsuffolk.org.uk or by calling the Mid Suffolk Tourist Information Centre on 01449 676800 for a free, colour copy of the Festival Brochure. Suffolk Family Carers We are an independent charity, our services are free! A Family Carer is defined as any age; ‘looking after’ a relative, friend, partner, parent/s or child/siblings who cannot manage without them because of illness, age or physical, learning or mental health difficulties. Many Family Carers, care for more than one person. The main concerns are when caring impacts on every part of the Family Carers’ life. It is then, especially, that support is needed which is more focused, planned, and often outside the home, with a complete break from the caring role. This we know sustains situations, otherwise there would be many more people cared for in residential homes, hospitals and other establishments. Please call our Helpline for more information; 01473 232679 or visit our website; www.suffolk-carers.co.uk

Stradbroke Cricket Club Amazingly, we are almost through another Winter. Spring is in the air, every section of the club from 1st XI down to Girls are in full swing in their pre-season training, and off the field the Club really feels like a club. The recent Horse Race Night attracted 112 members, friends & villagers, with a record £1250 raised for club funds. It was easy come, easy go, with the money used to purchase a ‘new’ tractor and an all weather mat for the practice nets. On behalf of the Club, thanks to everyone who turned up on the night, making it so memorable, and to Taylors Fish & Chips for feeding the 5000 ish. Fund raising keeps coming unabated. Easter sees the fourth year of the Music Marathon, held at the Queen’s Head Inn. Just call in, choose your favourite songs from the 4000 vinyl singles available (2 for £1), or just log on. You can e mail your request and pay by PayPal. Details are on the Village Website. Once more all proceeds will be split 50/50 with the East Anglian Air Ambulance. Beer & Rock’n’Roll. Have I missed anything? On the playing side, the decision to start a girls section in 2006 is bearing fruit already. Five Stradbroke girls went for County trials last week, an achievement in itself, with Ellie Johnson (Under 15) & Tilly Heydon (Under 13) making the Suffolk squads. Congratulations to them. Well done too, to our erstwhile wicket keeper Adam Van Der Looy. Called into his NZ clubs 1st XI in an emergency, he held 8 catches in an innings, a record for the whole state of Canterbury, not just his club. He asked to be remembered to everyone who knew him before he was famous. Thank you. Michael Hugman

The London Marathon Hello again! Just in case you didn’t read the article last month – my name is Don, I’m retired and live with my family at Frythe Barn along the Wilby Road. I’m running the London Marathon on behalf of ELF (the Elimination of Leukaemia Fund) Some London Marathon Stats The largest single fund raising event in the world - over £350mill. collected since the race began and over £50m 2007, although the accountants haven’t finished counting it yet! The oldest person to run the marathon was Fauja Singh in 2005. He was 93 and took 6hrs 7min, but this will trivial if Buster Martin completes the course this year – he is 101! So I’m just a youngster really. The longest time was 5 days 8 hrs and 29 min, but he was wearing a diving suit, including helmet! The fastest time is 2 hrs 5 min 38 sec (less than 5 min/mile pace) - I can’t cycle that fast, let alone run! How Am I doing Only 1month 27days, 13hours, and counting before the famous Klaxon sounds. I’m beginning to get a bit nervous when I think about it, so I try not to! I am just over half way through my training schedule which involves 4 to 5 sessions per week, usually accompanied by Santos. If I’m going to suffer, so is he! A typical week might be: Mon. - A rest, to get over Sun. Tue - rowing machine; Wed.- 5 mile ‘fartlek! (Swedish for fast play) sprinting, jogging and walking; Thu. - run 7 to 10m; Fri. - rest to get over Thu. Sat. - 5 mile jog and Sun. - long run (18m next week) Aaarh! Santos has Sundays off. Running Tips If it’s raining take water wings or a snorkel when going along Verdons Lane towards Fressingfield. Water Lane, which joins Fingal St. with Southolt Rd, is very aptly named. Take waders in all weather. Secateurs are always useful for removing rampant Brambles from round your legs. Lastly, always wave to drivers, not to keep them happy, but in case they don’t see you. Fundraising My target is to raise over £1500. At the time of writing, donations pledged so far £746 so still a long way to go. Local Gardeners Notes Local Gardeners Notes We are now through winter and into spring and even if we get a cold snap the Daffodils and spring flowering plants can’t be stopped. When I set up this article in autumn, I wanted people to contact me with any gardening questions they may have, to date, I have had no questions which I have put down to it being winter and people not thinking about their gardens rather than no one reading the article (fingers crossed). I started gardening properly with our first tiny garden in South Wimbledon, we then got an allotment to grow as much fruit and vegetables as time and small children would allow. This year is going to be the best time to start growing your own as the price of produce is going to rise and on a reasonably small area, with a bit of planning, you can keep yourself going with salad, beans, tomatoes, carrots, spinach, onions etc all summer long. I suggest, if you haven’t grown veg before and you don’t have much space that you buy seeds with a friend and share them as you always really get too many. This also goes for things like potatoes and onion sets as they take up a lot of space and you may want a couple of varieties. The first book on growing vegetables I bought and which is still the best book I own is called `The Vegetable Garden Displayed’ and was produced by the RHS and written by Joy Larcom. Unfortunately the book is no longer available, but for those with Internet savvy, it can be purchased for about £4 to £10. It is simple and straight to the point. Things to do this month; cut back Hellebore leaves to show off the flowers, prune Wisteria and grape vines, remove foliage of Epimedium now before the flowers come up, otherwise you won’t see them in the spring. Cut back deciduous grasses like Miscanthus and Deschampsia, evergreen grasses like Pampas just need deadheading. One thing that I am asked is when to cut back shrubs and as a rule it’s alright to cut back deciduous in winter and evergreen in the summer but, another thing to remember is, to cut anything that needs it after it has flowered particularly on shrubs and flowers early in the year otherwise you will be cutting back the flowering shoots. Now is a good time to use multipurpose fertiliser around shrubs and trees, if you have a dog don’t use bone meal or blood, fish & bone but use Clematis `cirrhosa’ `Growmore’ instead, all are equally as good. Plants to look out for are – Hellebores, Iris `unguicularis’ (for sunny position on free draining soil), Scilla `trifloria’ (small blue star shaped flowers), Crocuses, Snowdrops, Clematis `cirrhosa’ (needs a sheltered position) and Cornus (wil need cutting back soon). This month, we walked down the footpath towards Kersley Hall and across to Thorpe hall and back to the village through Valley Farm, which was a nice long walk, we had not done before. Contact me, Luke Heydon, with any questions at The Wheelwrights, Church Street, Stradbroke.
