Remembrance Day The names that are carved into Stradbroke’s War Memorial will be read out on Remembrance Sunday as they have been every Remembrance Day since the memorial was dedicated in 1922. They are the names of Stradbroke’s young men who gave their lives in times of war. They were young men who were part of the community; they walked the same streets as we do today; they enjoyed life while it was theirs to enjoy. Although most of us will only know them as “names” their families and friends remember them as the real people that they were. Our War Memorial on the corner of Church Street and Queen’s Street has been carefully tended and looked after for many years by Gordon Nunn whose uncle, James Nunn, was killed on September 22nd 1917. The First World War may seem a long way back in history but neither James Nunn nor his sacrifice, have been forgotten, despite the years that have passed.
Corporal JAMES EDWIN NUNN 8914, "B" Bty. 72nd Army Bde., Royal Field Artillery Son of Henry and Hannah Nunn, of Rose Cottage, Laxfield Rd. Stradbroke “...we cannot forget. Never a day passes but we think and speak of him and there are so many more like ourselves...” An extract from a family letter sent by James’ parents
The grave mentioned in the Commanding Office’s letter Part of the letter from the Commanding Officer to Mr and Mrs Nunn (Letters and photographs courtesy of Gordon Nunn)
Please join us at Stradbroke’s War Memorial at 10.50 a.m. on Sunday 8th November 2009 for the Remembrance Day service ...to remember all those who gave their lives in past conflicts. ...to pray for all our men and women who are serving their country around the world, particularly those young men from our community who serve in Afghanistan. Mike Readman, Stradbroke Local History Group

A fundraising event has been organised for the BBC’s ‘Children In Need’ appeal for Saturday 21st November. We are planning to go on a short, family friendly circular sponsored walk, starting at the Baptist church, then following the footpath along Laxfield Road towards Neaves Lane. We will then walk along Neaves Lane and follow the footpath around the field behind Stradbroke Business and Enterprise College, before walking back into the village and to the Baptist Church for refreshments! We will be meeting at the Baptist church at 10am Sponsorship forms can be downloaded from: www.bbc.co.uk/pudsey/fundraising Alternatively collect one from Stradbroke Post Office (we’ve created an additional form for you to leave details of the estimated number of people in your party – that way we cater better with regards to refreshments) Can an adult accompany any children under the age of 15 please. We hope that you will be able to join us! Sponsor money will be collected after the Sunday Service on 6th December, when the church will be open until 1pm for any participants to bring the money they have raised so that it can be sent off all together to the appeal.

Tools With A Mission Thank you for all the donations of tools and equipment. These have been delivered to HQ where, after repair, they will be available to be sent to developing countries. It was our intention to count each item as we loaded but having counted 147 wood chisels, 7 planes, 5 set squares we got lost somewhere between 150 and 200 spanners. It was a tremendous effort. “Thank you for helping us help others”. We are continuing to collect, please give us a call or visit, www.twam.co.uk.

All Saints Church Fund Raising Committee The Harvest supper was a great success despite Dougie not being well enough to supply the music. About 50 people were served with a hot meal with wine or juice. They were then entertained by Fred (the Rural Correspondent). All enjoyed him and it was nice to see Pat there. A profit of £249.60 was raised. By the time you read this report we will have had the “Crafts for Christmas” morning We are having a Raffle for a large Xmas Hamper, which will be drawn at the Xmas Coffee Morning to be held at the Chantry, on the 12th November 10 – 11.30am by kind permission of Anne & Jeremy Higgins. The final event of 2009 will be another Cake Stall, which will be held on the 5th December where Xmas cakes and logs etc can be purchased so Janet and Mary look forward to seeing you from 8.30am onwards. We would like to thank you for your continued support and look forward to seeing you all at the late 2009 events. Mary Ellis
The Rectory - Tel: 384363 Email: davidstreeter@suffolkonline.net In October the Church was indeed full of thanksgiving and celebration, and we are most grateful to all those who, in different ways, contributed to our festivities, and for all our cards and good wishes. Over 40 flower arrangements, paintings, vegetables, corn and fruit, music and song, and other illustrations, e.g. “Tools With A Mission” and “Fairtrade” of how to make the best use of God’s creation, put together a glorious picture, enabling us to enjoy Harvest Festival and our Ruby Wedding Anniversary, and to raise funds for our own church, Christian Aid and the producers of goods with the fair-trade label. The Abseiling Day on the 17th was a great success, with 42 coming down the 100ft. tower. On the first day of November, All Saints Day, we go to St Mary’s Church, Horham, for the Benefice Communion at 11.15 am, and on the next day, Monday, called All Souls Day, because we remember our loved ones and those who have departed this life, the Service of Holy Communion at 7.30 pm is a time for memories and appreciation of God’s love and his merciful care for us all. The church will be warm and the pathway to the door will be lit. Sunday 8th November is the traditional day for remembrance, both of those named on our War Memorial, and many more. This year our Service is at the Baptist Church. To show church members’ concern about The UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen in December, we will be signing a Pledge Card. Please ask me where you can sign. The Service of Evensong on Sunday 15th is at 5.00 pm. Is that a good church-going time? Advent Sunday begins our preparation for Christmas here, and at Athelington at 4.30 pm. This year, 2009, is The Year of the Child, and we shall take a special collection for The Children’s Society at the Carol Service on December 20th. For seven days from Friday November 27th to December 4th, The BIG Crib Exhibition in the church, put together by Suffolk schoolchildren, will draw this to our attention. Do come and take a look; we will be serving coffee in the church on Saturday morning, 28th November, 10.00 am – 12 noon. With all good wishes, David and Margaret Streeter. Other Matters:
PCSO Steven Long will be at the Library on Wednesday 25th November
PLEASE! Consider your neighbours and take care when having a bonfire.
The Parish Council agreed to fund the affordable housing survey under the auspices of Suffolk ACRE. When the questionnaire is received please take a few minutes to complete and return it (a freepost envelope will be included) as your views are very important. Mid Suffolk housing stock is now allocated through Choice Based Lettings and those interested must register online at www.gatewaytohomechoice.org.uk or contact 01449 724 762 for further assistance. News Items Stradbroke Monthly: The Parish Council is delighted to announce that a new editor has been appointed for the Stradbroke Monthly. Dudley Wood has come forward and will be working with Tony Ambler over the next couple of months and will take over completely by February 2010. We welcome Dudley to the team. We still require someone who could help Claire Hargrave put the magazine together once the editor has passed on all the articles. It does require a reasonable level of ICT skills and the ability to use Microsoft Publisher. Please telephone Mike Readman on 388341 for a chat about what might be involved. Playing Field Drainage: This project has now been completed. It is hoped that the surface will be playable by January 2010. The Parish Council was extremely pleased with the way the contractors went out of their way to work with the village. Westhall Football Goals: Football nets have been installed on the goals at Westhall. The Parish Council hopes that these will improve play for the young people who use the area. Police at the Library: PCSO Steven Long will be at the Library on Wednesday 25th November 11-11:30am to meet residents and answer any queries. He will have some posters available for anyone wishing to deter ‘trick or treaters’ at Hallowe’en. Neighbourhood Watch: Nick Thompson is to stand down as co-ordinator for the village. Nick has done a sterling job and it would be a shame to lose this valuable service. Remember also that, without an active Neighbourhood Watch, insurance premiums are very likely to rise so, if you would like to be a vital link between the residents and police, please contact Nick for more information. Bonfires: It is that time of year again when we clear the gardens and cut back. Please be considerate of your neighbours and take care when burning the debris. Check the weather forecast and note the wind force and direction so you do not prevent others from enjoying their gardens. Poster Board: Please note: the notice board opposite Wilby Road is for Stradbroke Activities and Information only. The next meeting of the Parish Council: 09 November 2009 at 7.30pm Clerk to the Parish Council: Carol A Smy - tel 01379 384679 - email clerkspc@thesmys.com ** please make any non-emergency calls to the Clerk ** ** between 0830 and 1800hrs Monday to Friday only, thank you! **

Life in the Legion The Guest Speaker at the October Meeting was Michael Graham from Ipswich brother of Branch Vice Chairman John who spoke on The S.A.S. (Special Air Services). This was most interesting and I gave him the usual Vote of Thanks on behalf of the members present. In The tribute at the start of the meeting I mentioned in particular the recent death of Bryan Ruscoe from Worlingworth an active and long-standing member, who will be very much missed. Branch Secretary Jeremy Higgins spoke on the Membership Seminar held at The RBL Club Lakenheath, and Ted Bootle gave a report on The Poppy Appeal Meeting at The Rock Barracks in Woodbridge. Roy Neil our Treasurer gave us his monthly financial report. The next meeting is The AGM to be held at The King’s Head Laxfield on Thursday November 5th starting at 11.30am. The Guest Speaker will be the new County Secretary Peter Golding. A Raffle for The Poppy Appeal will be held and members are requested to bring draw prizes. Remembrance Sunday is on November 8th and as in past years we will assemble at The war Memorial at 10.50am where a Short Service and Wreath Laying will take place conducted by our Branch Chaplain The Rev’d David Streeter. This will then be followed by The Remembrance Day Service in The Baptist Church conducted by Eric Havers. All are very welcome to attend this Annual Event. The Branch was represented at Bryan Ruscoe’s funeral in The Horham Baptist Chapel by John Graham our Vice Chairman and his wife Jill, Brian and Joyce Cooper, and myself. ‘The Royal British Legion will always remember them’ Michael Burton – Branch Chairman.

This month taken from www.adviceguide.org.uk “Sick leave and holiday - in England There have been changes that affect what happens if you are ill when you had planned to be on holiday from work. This means that if you are ill when you had planned to be on holiday from work, the time that you are ill will count as time off sick rather than time on holiday. If you are off work on holiday, and you become ill enough that you could be off work sick, you can ask your employer to postpone your holiday to make up for the time you were off sick. However, if you want to treat your time off work as sick leave instead of holiday, your employer can pay you sick pay rather than holiday pay for that time. Sick pay will be less than normal pay. Your employment contract should say how and when you should let your employer know you are sick, and what proof they might need.”

Organisations Stradbroke Women’s Institute We all enjoyed, as always, Mark Mitchell talking to us at our October meeting on “The Find of a Lifetime”. We realise now that we live in a very privileged part of England – East Anglia! There have been some wonderful “finds” discovered in Suffolk – The Snettisham Tore, Mildenhall Treasure, Hoxne Treasure and The Sutton Hoo burial ship, all fantastic treasures. We learned a lot, how they were discovered, and where they are now. Mark Mitchell kept a room full of women completely enthralled and silent – quite a feat! Prue Rush gave the vote of thanks for us all and Stella Bryant won the competition, well-done ladies! We welcomed Pat Marlow to the meeting, a newcomer to Stradbroke and look forward to seeing her again in November. Our next meeting is on Thursday 12th November in the Community Centre at 7.30pm and I hope to see you then. Iris Badcock,
Neighbourhood Watch ‘The Find Of A Lifetime’ at the Womens Institute last month.
With Guy Fawkes Night approaching, the police wish to remind people that regulation 4 of the Firework Regulations 2004 prohibits persons below the age of 18 years from possessing any outdoor fireworks in a public place.
PCSO Steven Long intends to be in the Library on Wednesday 25th November between the hours of 11.00 – 11.30am to meet members of the public who wish to discuss any concerns with him. Recently there have been two attempted Garage break-ins at Hoxne where the thieves were after gardening and agricultural equipment. Good locks, security lighting and gravel drives prevented the thefts. A tractor was stolen at Worlingworth late at night. There have been several telephone scams recently in Suffolk involving a man pretending to be from a telephone company who demands immediate payment for a fictitious out standing bill. Genuine companies do not operate in this manner so if you are contacted double check with your service provider and, if necessary, inform the police. Do not give him or her any bank account details. Some homeowners are eligible for free fire safety checks on their properties, which are carried out by the Suffolk Fire and Safety Rescue Service. A free smoke alarm is fitted as part of the service, which would include advice on kitchen and electrical safety and escape routes. To check if you are eligible please phone the Fire Safety department on 01473 260586. With Guy Fawkes Night approaching, the police wish to remind people that regulation 4 of the Firework Regulations 2004 prohibits persons below the age of 18 years from possessing any outdoor fireworks in a public place. Finally, I wish to hand over Neighbourhood Watch at the end of this year, so please contact me if you wish to take over. Nick Thompson Please use the following numbers to contact Police: Crime and suspicious activity should be reported on the following numbers, preferably as it is happening: Emergencies: 999, Non-urgent calls charged at a local rate to the following police switchboards: 01473 613500 (first choice) or 01986 835300. I am your point of contact if you have any suggestions or concerns: 01379 388977 - Nick Thompson

Suffolk Family Carers We are an independent charity, our services are free! A Family Carer is defined as any age; ‘looking after’ a relative, friend, partner, parent/s or child/siblings who cannot manage without them because of illness, age or physical, learning or mental health difficulties. Many Family Carers, care for more than one person. The main concerns are when caring impacts on every part of the Family Carers’ life. It is then, especially, that support is needed which is more focused, planned, and often outside the home, with a complete break from the caring role. This we know sustains situations, otherwise there would be many more people cared for in residential homes, hospitals and other establishments. Please call our Helpline for more information; 01473 232679 or visit our website; www.suffolk-carers.co.uk

Friends of All Saints Stradbroke I promised you more information about the food for “More Tastes of Europe”. It will be a family affair with a really festive feel to 'get you in the mood' - more details next month. We are still taking orders for the Stradbroke Calendar 2010. Stradbroke Business & Enterprise College On Friday 25th September we celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the opening of Stradbroke Modern School. During the day pupils were given a glimpse of what the school would have been like in September 1959. Lessons involved PT, with the RAF putting them through their paces, Country Dancing, Knitting, Arithmetic and learning times tables! The pupils really enjoyed it. It was a great deal of fun but it had a serious side in understanding how times have changed and moved on. The first Geography teacher Mr Dodds toured the school during the day and met pupils and staff. The local newspapers came along to interview pupils and take photos, so we look forward to seeing their articles and pictures. On the evening we were joined by 110 ex-pupils, many of whom were here on the first day that Stradbroke Modern School opened - 9th September1959! Also present was Mr Leegood the first PE teacher. After a few short speeches they toured the school with Year 10 and Year 11 pupils and then enjoyed a glass of wine and a piece of special ‘Anniversary cake ‘, whilst reminiscing about how it was in 1959 ! Many ex-pupils wore their old school ties and brought old photos to add to our exhibition of memorabilia. The atmosphere was lovely with many amusing and precious memories shared. We do hope that ex-pupils will keep in touch with each other and us. A huge Thank You goes to Mary Ward and Brian Stannard the first Head Girl and Head Boy, who joined us during the day and on the evening. Mary’s six grandchildren all have attended SBEC and four of them joined her for photographs with the press. Thanks also go to Olive Wingfield, a former pupil, parent and special friend of the school, who helped trace all our old pupils! Chriss Phillips,

Your Editor Speaks… Submission Dates! There will be no January 2010 edition of the Stradbroke Monthly magazine, the same as this year. The early publication date required for the January edition makes it a problem to produce for all concerned and, in many ways, the content in the past January editions has echoed the December edition very closely. If you need to advertise an event that is scheduled for January or you need to have an event included in the Village Diary for January please ensure that I receive it by the 20th November, which is the last date for articles to be included for the December edition. Those that are late will be included in the February edition unless the date for the event has expired. The date for articles to reach the magazine for the February edition is January 22nd 2010. On another topic, those who read the Parish Pump article in last month’s edition of the Stradbroke Monthly will know that I am relinquishing the editorship of the magazine in the New Year. By the time I hand over at the end of February, the new team would have been in place for 3 years and in that time the magazine has change considerably, due in no small measure to the dedication of all those involved. I wish them well for the future. Tony Ambler

Stradbroke Library News An Afternoon of Storytelling At the Library On Saturday 21st November at 2.00pm, Liam, the best storyteller in East Anglia is coming to Stradbroke library for some storytelling fun. Don’t miss out on this spectacular feast of magnificent tales for children aged 4 upwards. Adults would enjoy them too! There is no charge but we will be collecting that weekend for Children In Need, so donations would be very welcome. Pop into the library to book a place at this not-to-be-missed special event. (children of all ages are welcome but the stories are more suitable for those aged 4+. I realise that younger brothers and sisters might want to come with older children in the family and that is fine as long as there is an adult there as well). Maureen John, library Manager.

Playing field back on track! The Parish Council is delighted to say that the drainage work on the playing field is virtually complete. After many years (decades) of waiting we decided to embark on this ambitious project to provide a really good playing surface for the Cricket and Football Clubs. Hopefully this will mean that we can say goodbye to cancellations and postponements due to water logging on the pitches. The work has been achieved by a truly team effort on the part of many village individuals and organisations to provide the funding plus a very significant grant from the Cricket Foundation. The contractors will return to top up any soil that has sunk and to aerate the soil to ensure good grass growth in the future. It is hoped the surface will be playable again by January ’10 providing the weather is favourable. At the moment more rain is needed. We would like to thank everyone who has played their part by donating funds, by completing grant applications, checking on the work on site and liaising with the contractors etc. It is truly an example of what can be achieved when we come together and work for a common purpose. Fitness Track Further improvements to the Playing Field are planned. A fitness track is to be installed around the perimeter of the field for walking and jogging and spaced along the track will be outdoor fitness equipment that can be used by all residents. (See pictures) This project will be funded by Stradbroke Charitable Trust and by a grant from Mid Suffolk District Council. It is hoped the work will commence this autumn providing the weather conditions allow. Ann Kerr Chairman Stradbroke Parish Council

I am sure that this also applies to other areas of the Village. If you spot a vehicle that you think is going too fast or driving dangerously please make a note of the registration number, the name of the company, if it is a commercial vehicle, and the date and time. We will be quite willing to write to companies to inform them of our concerns and ask them to pursue the matter with their drivers. Stradbroke Cricket Club Continuity has long been a watchword within the Cricket Club, although it is sometimes easier said than done. In his Chairman’s Report, Michael Hugman highlighted those disciplines that year on year keep the club afloat, and thriving. The club is 30 years old in 2010, and the commitment to youth is the single most important facet of the club. Now going into its 4th year, coaching cricket in local Primary Schools through the ‘Chance to Shine’ initiative has seen a record number of new junior members joining Stradbroke. This has increased the need for more coaches, with hopefully 7 new coaches qualified by next summer. Working closely with Stradbroke Parish Council has enabled the drainage project to progress smoothly, along with the impending fitness track around the Playing Field, necessitating some give and take on both sides, but has brought the club into a sharper focus within the community. The following were elected to office at the AGM: President – Don Lummis, Chairman – Michael Hugman, Vice Chairman – David Allum, Secretary – Richard Pierce-Saunderson, Treasurer – Carrie Barnes, Welfare Officer – Caroline Johnson, Youth Development – Scott Turner, Webmaster – Steve Warner, 1st XI Captain – Richard PierceSaunderson, A Team Captain – Stuart Taylor, B Team Captain – Dan Tompkins, Under 15 Manager – Mark Bickley, Under 13 Managers – Frank & Sharon Davey, Under 11 Manager – Steve Bacon. Stradbroke & District Bowls Club. A very big thank you to all those members who turned out to help with seeding and fertilising our green in preparation for the 2010 season. We hope that we have made a good job of this very important part of maintaining our bowling green and will be watching the ground to see when the new shoots appear. We are all pleased that our President, Iris Cattermole, is back home after her stay in Hospital; we all wish her a speedy return to good health and hope to see her around the village very soon. Our Annual general meeting will be in November and members will be notified of the date so please try to attend and have your say. Plans for some fund raising are in hand but not yet finalised so more about this in the next issue

Stradbroke White Hart Bowls Club Our impressive start to the season rather faded away and we ended in sixth place in Division 1, with nine wins and nine losses – it really was a season of two halves, a winning half and a losing half! We did reach the final of the Upper Waveney League knock out Cup and the final of the Cattee Cup but were runners up in both after really close fought contests which went right down to the wire. We managed to retain the Ellis Trophy in our annual home and away competition against Stradbroke and District BC who had knocked us out of the County Junior Cup – well done to them for going through and winning the final. A big thank you to everyone who played, helped and supported us through what was a difficult year, but we are delighted that the White Hart is about to re-open (Nov 3rd 6.00pm) and look forward to everything getting “back to normal”. Work on the green has already started in preparation for next season and with pub re-opening everything is looking up. Next events are the AGM and then the Presentation evening... and then before we know it the new season will be upon us! White Hart Bowls Club will be holding their next Prize Bingo event at the Community Centre on the 6th November 2009 starting at 7.30pm. Please come along and join us! Mike Readman

Gardeners Notes Because of the dry summer the autumn colour will not be as long lasting this year and by the time you read this will probably be almost over. Don't forget to collect up the leaves as they make a very good mulch or soil improver once they have rotted down. Field Maples have very good colour, if you only have a small garden Amelanchiers are excellent all round trees with nice autumn colour. The tree that is probably my favourite for year round interest is an ornamental hawthorn called Crataegus prunifolia. The shrubs Cornus sangiunea 'Midwinter Fire', Cotinus 'Grace', and Euonymous alatus all offer a burst of autumn colour almost making up for the shorter days and low sun in the sky. I have been to see a few more local orchards and collected fruit from people to be identified. So far we have located a couple of fine collections of cobnuts (similar to hazel nuts but better for eating), I was also able to get identified an old apple tree as a Lady Henniker, named after the Henniker family from the Thornham estate, dating from about the 1840's, also a cooking apple originally from this area called Dr. Harvey which dates back to the 1600's. Finally I recently went around a very old local orchard which as well as old pears and apples had a large amount of plums, particularly one called 'Oullin's Golden Gage' which was widely grown in this area as Notcutts would buy the fruit. There is still time for anyone wanting to have their fruit identified to get in touch with me and I will find out what it is. Anyone wishing to plant an orchard or wanting to restore one should also contact me as I have information that may help. Now is a good time to tidy and manure veg beds for next year, this gives the weather a chance to break up the organic matter. If you haven't done so already harvest Jerusalem artichokes, good for soup if you can put up with the flatulance, leeks and parsnips are ready and now it's time to plant or split your rhubarb which will do well if planted in a reliably moist position ideally not in full sun. It is the best time to plant bare root plants especially roses, make sure you soak the roots well before planting and incorporate a good amount of well rotted manure, don't be tempted to plant a new rose in the same place as an old one as it will end up not doing very well. It is worth cutting back long shoots from climbing roses, this stops them being damaged by winds, this also goes for shrub roses but don't give them a proper prune until February or the new shoots mights get damaged by the cold weather. Although there isn't too much in flower now Nerines have been looking good and Schizostylus coccineas are in full swing by now. I look forward to this time of year especially after a long warm summer, we have the autumn colour, blackberries in the hedgerows, bonfires (making sure there are no hedgehogs hiding within) and the challenge of seeing how long we can go before we put the heating on... 'Oh the joys of autumn'. Until next month, Luke
