This was the comment from the Planning Committee at Mid Suffolk District Council when they refused the application for the development of the Garage site in Queen Street on the grounds of “overdevelopment of the site with inadequate and unsatisfactory parking provision...”. The proposal was for 7 dwellings with 7 parking spaces. Whilst the Parish Council supports the residential development of the site it wants to ensure that the safety and parking issues are dealt with in a way that protects the safety of: • the residents of the new dwellings, • the children using the Primary School and Pre School, • the community at large • every driver and pedestrian who uses this stretch of the road. What happens now? There could be an appeal against the Mid Suffolk Planning Committee’s decision or the plans could be amended and re-submitted. Before that happens we would like to know what you think. Attached to the back page is a list of the Parish Council’s concerns
Please take time to read them and let us know your views. Thank you, Ann Kerr Chairman, Stradbroke Parish Council

Your Editor Speaks... As can be seen from the back page the Village Diary is already looking at the October calendar with added events arranged for November: where has the year gone? Already the Christmas Edition, which we create in November, looks like being a very full one with all the organisations we usually include and local trades people wanting to make everyone aware of the Yule Tide festivities they are planning. So to ensure that we do not run out of space in this issue we may be forced to severely edit all articles we receive so please do not be offended if your entry is reduced. On the other hand you could always keep you reports to a minimum and highlight your Christmas events instead! Tony Ambler, Editor

Where you live, is very important to everyone, your neighbours, friends and family. It may be that you live near to your relatives, or perhaps you live many miles from them, and find it hard not seeing each other as often as you would like to. Living in Stradbroke makes you part of the community, but still all individuals. You may have moved here to retire, or come just simply because it seemed a very pleasant place to live. We, at the Baptist Church are made up of different people, young families and older people, some wondering what their future holds, some very settled in their circumstances, but all in a family who care about each other. It is being part of that family that helps to make us who we are. We work together share together, and meet on a Sunday to encourage and be encouraged. Varied in all we are, and all we do, we have one thing in common - we worship a Living God. We have a sure knowledge that we belong to the family of God here in Stradbroke. We belong to Him and each other. Do you feel that you belong? Are you a bit lonely or unsure of what the future holds for you? Perhaps you are a little are curious about Christian things. Why not come along on a Sunday morning and meet with us on Sundays? You will find a very warm welcome. Try us and see, you won’t know until you come! Jackie Hughes

All Saints Church Fund Raising Committee The Cake stall on August 25th was well supported and raised £87.70. The Village Show on September 8th was a great success and seemed so happy with the day being well attended despite the entries being slightly down. Our thanks must go to Roland and Angela Copping who ran the show and funded it from the sale of plants. With out them there would not have been a show and we would not have made £277.96! The main prize winners were R. Copping, A. Copping, M. Streeter, P. Fill, Mr Gillingwater, Mrs Coopes and Mr Carter. Well done! By the time you read this we will have had our Harvest Supper complete with Belly Dancers. We are holding a Quiz Night on the 19th October in the Community Centre starting at 7.30pm. Entrance will be £3.00 per person with teams of 4 and refreshments will be available. All enquires to Mrs B. Moore on 01379 384275 so do come and have a fun night! We will be holding two more cake stalls, November 10th and December 8th so look out for Janet and myself out side Partridge and Lucas. Once again many thanks for your support . Mary Ellis.
The Rectory - Tel: 384363 Email: davidstreeter@suffolkonline.net Dear Friends, MANY THANKS to all those who, in different ways, contributed to my 65th Birthday Celebrations which take us on to our “great event” next month, The Queen and Prince Philip’s Diamond Wedding Anniversary, for which we will rejoice with flowers and music in the Church from 20th -26th November. If you can help in any way, especially arranging flowers and/or being on duty to welcome our visitors, please let me know. There were 20 abseiling down the 100ft tower on August 21st including, from Stradbroke, Sam Hackett, David Merritt, Jack Goddard, Daniel Hawes, Chelsea Briggs, Sara Stones, Stefan Saunders & myself. Next year we will do it on a Saturday morning in July; please tell me if you would like to take part. HARVEST FESTIVAL is on Sunday, 7th October, with services at 8.00 am, and at 6.30 pm with the Benefice Choir, and Canon Derek Green of Worlingworth, the preacher, and on Tuesday, 9th October, the School Service is at 2.00 pm, to which all are welcome, and it will be followed, from 3.30 – 5.30 pm by Tea in the Church, and Cake and Biscuits, which will be made from Fairtrade ingredients (I’ve won prizes with my cakes!), and a sale of the Harvest Produce, including what the schoolchildren bring, for Christian Aid to help people in countries devastated by floods, drought and other disasters, and for development projects. ALL SAINTS SUNDAY, on October 28th, is when we welcome members of Horham, Athelington and Redlingfield churches to join us for the Morning Service at 11.15 am to give thanks for our parish’s dedication to All Saints. Please join us then, in gratitude for what has been achieved this year, and to ask “the Saints” to give us strength for all that needs to be done in the future for our church. With all good wishes, David Streeter.

Stradbroke Parish Council The Parish Pump! PARISH COUNCIL MEETING
NEXT PARISH COUNCIL MEETING: Monday 8th October 2007 7.30pm At the Community Centre .
The Parish Council asks that all residents note that the play park at Westhall is for the use and benefit of ALL children in the village – not just those living in Westhall...
No dogs in the Play Parks please!
13 SEPTEMBER 2007
Public Forum A great number of residents attended this part of the meeting. They all were concerned about the planning application listed below. Mr David Skates expressed concerns over landscaping and the inadequate number of parking spaces on site as more than one car per household is often a necessity rather than a luxury in rural areas. He also raised the difficulties of access for emergency vehicles. Children were also deemed to be at risk. Mr Derek Routen endorsed Mr Skates’ views and was concerned at the speed of vehicles along the Diss Road Planning The following application was discussed: 1707/07Development of 3 residential units comprising 2x2 storey dwellings& 1x1storey dwelling provision for garage & parking. Accommodation for neighbouring approved barn conversion project c/w formation of new pedestrian & vehicular access. Land to the south of White House, Diss Road Fourteen letters of objection and one of concern had been received in addition to the comments made during the Public Forum. The Council voted unanimously to recommend refusal of the application. Applications considered by MSDC since the Parish Council last met: 1928/07 remove one eucalyptus The Forge, Queen Street - Approved 1929/07 canopy reduce one ash by 60% 2 Cedar Close - Approved Site Meeting Report: Land at Former Hairdressing Salon, Doctors Lane At a site meeting the Planning Officer confirmed the reason for refusal i.e. damage to the conservation area and incompatibility with the adjacent listed building. The site owner may consider an appeal, alternative design or continuing use as a commercial site. Report on MSDC Planning Committee Meeting 05 Sept 07 at Needham Market: re Stradbroke Garage redevelopment This meeting had been attended by Cllr Readman for the Parish Council and Ann Kerr as Vice Chairman of the Governors of Stradbroke VCP School. The MSDC Planning Committee members expressed concern at the overdevelopment, inadequate parking and the resulting road safety issues at the proposed development and voted unanimously to refuse the application. It was noted that a further amended layout for the site is likely to be submitted. The Parish Council agreed that a meeting be arranged with the Planners to discuss the situation and that the concerns over the road safety issues will be put into the Parish Magazine so that the community can make their views known if they wish. Westhall Play Park The base for the basketball ring would be put in place very soon and further quotations would be sought for the repainting of the older equipment. Favourable comments were still being received about the new Play Park and it continued to be very popular. Yet another resident had contacted the Clerk to state that children from other parts of the village were being told they were not allowed to play in the park and must use the Community Centre one. It had also been reported that someone had been taking his dog into the fenced area of the Play Park. Signs would be placed to ensure all are made aware that the Play Park is a dog free zone. The Parish Council asks that all residents note that the play park at Westhall is for the use and benefit of ALL children in the village – not just those living in Westhall and please, no dogs in the fenced area. Seating Three benches had been sited on the sports field (2) and Westhall Play Park (1). The third had been planned for New Street but householders objected so the Clerk and Chairman decided to have it removed and it was agreed by the Council that the bench should be sited in the Cemetery. Coronation Gates All work on the gates was complete and the keys would be distributed in time for the system of locking up to begin on the evening of 21 September 2007. Desmond Tebble, The Chairman of Diss Town Football Club, was the guest speaker at The September mid day meeting of the branch. He gave a most interesting talk about his life with the club having been connected with ‘The Tangerines’ for over 50 years, and this has included 10 years as Captain, and 22 years as Chairman. Branch Member Peter Harvey gave him the usual ‘Vote of Thanks’ on behalf of the 14 members present. During the business part of the meeting I welcomed Canon Derek Green from Worlingworth to his first meeting since joining the branch, and I also gave a report on the recent H Group Meeting, which was hosted by the branch. Treasurer Roger Gwyn gave his monthly report, and details of the forthcoming Band Concert by the Diss Salvation Army Band on Friday 26th October in The Community Centre were explained to the members. Branch Secretary Jeremy Higgins dealt with various correspondences, and gave out dates for forthcoming County Events. Get Well Cards have been sent to Branch President, Richard Shepherd, and to our oldest member Bert Lockwood from nearby Wilby. The Guest Speaker at the next Branch Meeting at The Queen’s Head on Thursday 4th October at 11.30am will be Trevor Scott from Mendham and his subject will be The WEA. Michael Burton - Chairman.

“Much reminiscing took place whilst partaking of scones, jam and cream!”
Wow – what a day we had in September! The Bygones crew were with us all day, filming the children from our village school picking Blackberries in the morning for the Stradbroke Jam Factory. The Jam was then made by some of our W.I. ladies amid lots of laughter, filmed by the crew. At 4.00 pm we held a Tea Party for those adults who were children in the war years and actually did pick the fruit for the jam that was made in Stradbroke! Much reminiscing took place whilst partaking of scones, jam and cream and yes it was` that jam’ made in the morning. It was a wonderful day very much enjoyed by all who took part including the Bygone Crew. We are looking forward to seeing Stradbroke in the Bygones programme on ITV in December on a Thursday at 7.30 pm. After all this excitement we held our normal monthly meeting. Alan Smith from Gaze Auctioneers came and spoke to us on Antiques and told us many amusing stories from his life. We saw a `Marriage Jug’ a `Hark Hure’ and many more unusual items. We were entertained royally with hilarious stories. Jane Gemmill gave the vote of thanks and Stella Bryant won the competition: A perfect end to a busy day. Our next meeting is on Thursday October 11th at 7.30 pm in the Community Centre – see you there. Iris Badcock, press secretary.
Stradbroke Good Neighbours Are you new to our village? Would you sometimes welcome some help when you are feeling under the weather, or have to stay indoors for some reason? If so, Stradbroke Good Neighbours might fit the bill. We are a group of friendly and helpful volunteers who will take your prescription to the surgery, and we can collect it and deliver it to your home too. We can take you on short journeys to see your GP or nurse, to the hairdressers or the chiropodist, in fact, wherever you need to go that is too far for you to make it on foot, but not too far for our volunteers to drive you there. We can check the batteries in your smoke alarms or change light bulbs. We can help with individual jobs that you might find difficult. Just ask and we will tell you if we are able to help you. We are not an emergency service and ask for 24 hours’ notice. And all this is available by calling our number on 07749:445531 Stradbroke Good Neighbours - Can you help? Please get in touch!
To continue to do these neighbourly things, we also need some help. If you are looking for something to become involved in, Stradbroke Good Neighbours could be the answer. We are always grateful for people able and willing to drive others. We also need people willing to answer the mobile telephone and to be on our committee. Meetings are usually short, and happen three or four times a year. We usually have one fund-raising event to help us to pay for the telephone and our insurance and you will be asked to sign a confidentiality document as we do not talk about anyone and the help we give, outside our committee. If you would like to learn more about us, please phone the Good Neighbours’ number, tell the person on duty and leave you telephone number. They will pass the message to the rest of the committee and we will get back to you. Please note that everyone who volunteers will be asked to undergo a Criminal Records Bureau check. This is paid for by SGN. We look forward to hearing from you!

Our September event was a delightful visit to the gardens at Thorpe Hall where History Group we saw the amazing variety of garden “rooms” set around the beautifully restored Hall. The weather was perfect and it was a real pleasure to be able to see what has been done. Many thanks to Adrian for hosting our visit. The answer to last month’s Quiz question on gunpowder sandwiches as a cure for blood poisoning ? It was the Rector of Stradbroke, the Rev. Roland Upcher,, who published an article on it, in a medical magazine in 1911 entitled "Notes on the Use of Gunpowder (Black)." His father, when a vicar in Norfolk in the 1800s found a local shepherd who never suffered from blood poisoning despite many cuts. The shepherd’s preventative “medicine” was black gunpowder sprinkled on his cheese sandwiches. (Canon Upcher was also a fine athlete. He took the World Record for running the mile in 1870, 1871 and 1872 while a student at Cambridge) The next SLHG event is the first of a series of Open Evenings where we shall be showing many of the items we have in the Stradbroke Village Archive. Using our new computer projector and large screen, we shall be able to open the Village Archive up to everyone who is interested in Stradbroke’s past.

Suffolk Family History Society – Stradbroke Branch Tracing one’s family history has become one of the UK’s favourite pastimes following the success of such TV programmes as the BBC’s ‘Who Do You Think You Are’. Everyone is welcome – you don’t have to be a member of the Suffolk Family History Society. It costs £1.50 a session and includes tea / coffee. The last two meetings this year will be held at Stradbroke Community Centre at starting at 7.30 p.m. 23rd October - ‘Plague in the 17th Century’; speaker Pip Wright. 27th November – ‘Missing’; the work of the Salvation Army’s Missing Persons’ Dept; speaker Ken Finch. Stradbroke News and Views
Local Gardeners Notes As I am often asked the same sorts of gardening questions I thought that it might be of interest if the magazine included a regular gardening article and, if I don’t know the answer to your questions, enjoy finding them out. I would like this gardening article to give you the opportunity to write in and ask questions, offer advice and experience to others, or to just share a gardening or wild life experience you may have had particularly if it has local interest! For example, I took a cycle ride with Sally and the children down to Syleham, past “Luke’s Cottage” (very apt) and stumbled on Syleham Church (St Margaret’s) which we didn’t even know was there, Devil’s Bit Scabious down a gravel track. It’s an idyllic spot surrounded by the water meadow and with clumps of Devil’s bit Scabious flower throughout the church yard. In each article I will be giving a brief seasonal guide to what you should be doing or at least thinking about before it’s too late. This month is the ideal time to be planting spring/early summer bulbs for next year. Varieties to consider are Narcissus `St Keverene’, a tall early flowering (March) bright yellow Daffodil, Poeticus Narcissi `Peasant’s Eye’, late flowering (end of May) white with orange centre, very pretty, and narcissi `Triandus Petrel’ a beautiful white small narcissi flowering April to May with multiple flowers on each stem. I did love Tulipa `Spring Green’ which is a fantastic very fashionable Tulip until I started seeing it in every gardening magazine, now something like Tulipa `White Triumphator’, a beautiful white Lily type Tulip, is far more original. Handy note: with Tulips on clay soil it is worth mixing in a bit of grit or gravel to improve the drainage and don’t use them where soil get very wet. As with nearly all bulbs the planting depth should be three times the height of the bulb and make sure you get them the right way up! Alliums are also worth considering for an early summer display with Allium `Christopher’ (June) being a real winner as it has remarkable flower heads that once Allium the lilac colour fades continues on as dried skeletons. Snow Drops and Bluebells are best planted in the green (with their foliage on) in February and May respectively. Other things to think about this month are; keep deadheading Phlox, Roses, Dahlias and cut back Geraniums (Cranesbill) and Alchemilla Mollis to expose fresh foliage that will fill out for Autumn. Any herbaceous plants like `Shasta Daisy’ or `Globe Thistle’ can be cut back and may reward you with a littler more flower. Prune any wispy Rose branches that may be damaged by strong wind, (I prefer to do the proper Rose prune in February to avoid too much die back) and if cutting back Foxgloves, Hollyhocks and Poppies sprinkle the seeds where you would like them to grow in the future. If you like edges to your borders, keep them neat as it helps them look good even if the plants are getting to the end of their season. Make sure you get your Potatoes out of the ground, as the blight was bad this year! Finally, October is the best month for planting new plants contrary to what the garden centres tell you, so rather than waiting until the May Bank Holiday to start thinking about your garden give it some thought now. Feel free to contact me, Luke Heydon, by posting a note or letter through my door at The Wheelwrights, Church Street, Stradbroke. Shasta Daisy Luke Heydon

Eighteen months of training for the toughest challenge of their lives paid off as the boys finished the race in second place overall, just six hours behind the winners, having raised around £25000 for charity. Stradbroke News & Views Suffolk Family Carers We are an independent charity, our services are FREE. Our main aim is to help increase the well-being of Family Carers by offering information, support, and an advocacy service for the approximately 98,000 Family Carers in Suffolk whose lives are in some way restricted because they are looking after relatives or friends who are frail, ill, or who have a physical or learning disability or mental health problem. Fire safety in the home, befriending service, training and consultation. Please call our Helpline for more information; 01473 232679 or visit our website; www.suffolk-carers.co.uk
Coronation Gates The gates to the rear car park at the Community Centre have been installed and from 21st September they will be locked every night at about 9.30pm. If there is an event at the Community Centre that will finish after this time they can be left open but should be locked by the users of the Centre. There will be a key with the Community Centre keys that are held at the Swimming Pool. They will be opened each morning at about 8.30 am, earlier if the swimming pool is open.. We hope all users of the community centre site will co-operate with these arrangements and we sincerely hope this will prevent further vandalism to the cricket and football pitches by cars driving over the field. Ann Kerr, Chairman Stradbroke Parish Council
Stradbroke Health Trust The Health Trust is currently involved in two projects in the Village. Doctors’ Surgery The work to extend the surgery into the Trust Room is under way. This will provide a further doctor’s consultation room and an extension to the office area. We are grateful to the Stradbroke Festival Committee for the recent donation from the proceeds of the Country Fair to help with this work. Hopefully we will all soon be benefiting from this development. Permissive Path Two village landowners have very kindly allowed us to install a permissive footpath alongside the Laxfield Road to run in the fields from Drapers Hill to the Cemetery. This will involve having a bridge over the ditch near Drapers Hill and a new pedestrian entrance into the Cemetery. Thanks to some donations and grants a new piece of pavement has already been constructed and the ditch has been cleared. The work on the footpath itself will commence shortly but is dependent on when the digger can get on to the land. We hope the work will be completed by sometime on October. Peter Smith, Chairman Stradbroke Health Trust
Words Of Thanks From... Stella Bryant There are so many criticisms of today’s young people that I should like to record my thanks to: The three young lads who, on separate occasions, helped me when they saw me struggling with a heavy shop door in the village – and gave heart-warming smiles, whilst doing so. Also the paperboy who always closes my gate with care, even when he finds it left open by a previous caller. There are also plenty of thoughtful adults in Stradbroke and I am really glad I live here!
Mary Ellis As Church Treasurer I would like to thank all the people who have replied to the letters sent out, many favourable and some not. I don’t know if you are aware but our quota for the year amounts to over £20,000 which is a vast sum to find even before we start to pay for the up keep of the building. I will let you know the outcome of the letters in due course and thank you for your support.

M.C.P. Marie Curie Plate
What a wet season we have suffered this year with matches postponed on several occasions, but eventually we have finished our season well. The final results have not yet come through for all the teams, but in the Waveney Triple League we finished runners up, going into the 1st Division next year. On a very hot and sunny Sunday afternoon a team went to British Sugar at Bury St Edmunds to play in the Marie Curie Plate, where we gave our supporters an interesting afternoon and came home triumphant, winning 105 – 63 shots. Congratulations to all the team. Dorothy Readman.
Stradbroke White Hart Bowls Club On Friday 5th October there is to be a Prize Bingo evening at Stradbroke Community Centre starting at 7.30p.m. to raise funds for Stradbroke White Hart Bowls Club. There will be many excellent prizes, refreshments and raffle. Please join us for an entertaining evening. Julie Ward (Secretary)
Stradbroke Football Club Once again the club is indebted to Transam Trucking for it’s sponsorship. The club has had a mixed start to the season. The first team lost to Wickham Market & Saxmundham and beat Wenhaston. The reserves drew at Henley and lost to Saxmundham and Stoneham Aspal: Things can only get better! The Bingo held each month continues to be successful with the next one being held on 12th October in the Community Centre at 7.30pm. Remember the more people that play the bigger the cash prizes. The September game raised £127.86 so thanks to all who helped and supported us. The club also would like to take this opportunity to sends it’s best wishes to Justin Wilson on his marriage on Mary Ellis. the 29th September.
