Actually it has gone on the grass, not literally down a well but you know what we mean…it looks fantastic and has been given a great reception by everyone. A base will be laid for the basketball hoop area and the final piece of equipment should arrive soon.

We hope everyone in the village continues to enjoy using the equipment here and at the Wilby Road play park, safely and sensibly. It is great to have seen Stradbroke children having so much fun on the equipment during their summer holidays!

Your Editor Speaks... I am, I‘m sorry to say, of the generation that was born just before computers became popular and have been trying to catch up ever since! My answer to most of my computer problems is, in the first instance when it has stopped working, to give my computer a stern talking too, threaten to throw it in the fish pond in my garden and if all that technical stuff doesn't work to give it a good shaking. This has served me well over the years and if the computer still didn't work at least it released my frustration of not understanding how this small box of components and wires works. Just after I sent the final article to Claire for inclusion in last months magazine my computer stopped working and having gone through the three steps above and with it still stubbornly refusing to work I had to find a person who knew about the more intimate bits of my computer. Anyway to cut a long story short the "Man who knew" advised me that my Hard Drive had broken and would need replacing ( not a cheap job he muttered) and all the information, programs, photos and emails had, to all intents and purposes disappeared never to be found again. So what has this to do with an apology, I hear you ask, well if you had in the past sent me an email that had a date or function to be included in an issue after August, it has gone and I no longer have it. I am apologising before I get the odd note asking why a certain event was not included. This September issue is ok as It's all articles after my computer broke but if you sent me, for arguments sake, an email in July with a date in October please re-send it. Tony Ambler, Editor

All Saints Church Fund Raising Committee Well done to the Friends for reaching their £20,000 goal. We also raise quite an amount each year for our Church from our many events. The Box Supper was a very happy evening with hopefully everyone having a nice a meal from his or her boxes and, with the proceeds from the raffle, this raised £172.90 bringing our total for the year so far to £3387.38! Janet and myself will be having a cake stall on the 25th August. Our next event is the Village Show on Saturday 8th September. Please send your entries to R Copping. There are classes to suite everyone, including children, so please, please do try and enter. Schedules will be available from the Post Office. The Harvest Supper is in the Community Centre on Saturday 22nd September and tickets will be available from the Post Office nearer to the time. As P.C.C. Treasurer, I would like to thank Dougie and Betty Chittock for holding a dance at Wilby, which raised £100 in aid of our Church. Thank you both. Mary Ellis 384642

The Rectory - Tel: 384363 Email: davidstreeter@suffolkonline.net Dear Friends, The cakes that I made for the Country Fair on 21st July were won by Peter and Pauline Love and Roy and Joyce Lee. After my Birthday Cake, the next ones will be for the Flower and Produce Show on Saturday, 8th September. Do look at the schedule, (available at the Post Office), and see which classes you can enter, and remind the children about theirs. After that it’s the Christmas Bazaar on 1st November, and then a copy of The Queen and Prince Philip’s Wedding Cake for their Diamond Wedding Anniversary on Tuesday, 20th November when flowers and royal memorabilia will fill the church with our celebrations. Is there anyone who could make a model of the Coronation Gates (now next to the Swimming Pool) and the other buildings in the Playing Field area, as part of our display? Please let me know if you can. My active three weeks ends with the Sponsored Bike Ride for our churches and the Suffolk Historic Churches Trust on Saturday, 8th September, from 10.00 am to 6.00 pm – a splendid way to take exercise, to enjoy the countryside and visit other attractive churches. Sponsorship Forms can be had from The Rectory and the Church. Don’t miss your opportunity to go out. I am here to be of service to you, not only with the church services, and the cakes, but in any way that demonstrates the love of God in his Son, Jesus Christ.

Do tell me what I can do. O taste and see that the Lord is good; happy are those who put their trust in him. Ps. 34.8. With all good wishes, David Streeter.

Stradbroke Parish Council The Parish Pump! PARISH COUNCIL MEETING

NEXT PARISH COUNCIL MEETING: Monday 10th September 2007 7.30pm At the Community Centre

13 AUGUST 2007 The meeting was attended by 21 members of the public and the following sent their apologies for absence: PC Tim Green, Stuart Gemmill, Karen Hillen, Nick Stones and Adrian Wingfield. No reports were received from the County and District Councillors and PC Green. There was a very heavy agenda this month and three items were held over until the September meeting. These were the Village Green, Cemetery Chapel and the possibility of a grant/loan to the Health Trust for the Permissive Path.

Public Forum Several members of the public used this time to express their doubts about the proposal before the Council for development at Drapers Hill. The main concern was the difficulties with parking and that access for emergency vehicles would be further hampered. The Council appreciated the time taken to put forward views in a clear, concise way and took note of all points raised. As Mr Gemmill was not present it was not possible to answer questions posed about the recent Planning Committee meeting at Mid Suffolk District Council.

Planning The following decisions granting Planning Approval have been received from Mid Suffolk District Council: 1389/07 erection of rear extension c/w alterations to existing flat roof - 23 Woodfields 1524/07 erection of rear conservatory - 1 Ash Plough The Following has had Planning Approval refused: 1482/07 erection of cottage-style dwelling - Land at former hair salon, Doctor’s Lane The following applications were considered by the Council (decision in brackets): 1928/07 Remove one eucalyptus- The Forge, Queen Street (recommended approval, unanimous with no comments to be made) 1929/07 Canopy reduce one ash by 60% - 2 Cedar Close (recommended approval, unanimous with no comments to be made) 0779/07 Change of use of redundant agricultural buildings/yard to business use (B1) with alteration to existing vehicular access - Manor Farm, Pixey Green For more (recommended refusal, 8 votes for refusal & 2 against) information about 1830/07 Erection of two houses and double garage - rear of Drapers Hill Farm (recommended refusal, unanimous) the Parish Council 0833/07 Porch to front of building & garage to side - 7 Bishops Way and it’s work go to (recommended refusal, unanimous) stradbroke.org.uk 2265/07 Installation of solar water heating collectors - SBEC, Wilby Road (recommended approval, unanimous with no comments to be made) and follow the link Other Business on the front page. Play Park at Westhall: The new play equipment had proved to be very popular and was being very well used. The question of advisory notices and/or traffic calming was raised by a resident and Suffolk County Council would be consulted on what, if any, measures could be put in place. The base in the front of the basketball ring was still to be installed; quotations had been received for this and work would be undertaken as soon as possible. The Clerk was consulted by a resident of another part of the village who had been told her children were not permitted to use the Play Park. This was incorrect...the Play Park was for the use and enjoyment of ALL children of the village and their friends. Coronation Gates: The work was almost complete and once the locks are purchased the gates would be locked each evening from 9.30pm. Seating: Four benches have been purchased for the village and were now ready for installation. Neighbourhood Watch: So far one person had shown interest in the Co-ordinator’s post. Without a Co-ordinator the scheme would have to close down and once a scheme ends it would be extremely difficult to start it up again. Many insurance companies offer a discount where there is a Neighbourhood Watch scheme and if the Stradbroke scheme ceases then premiums from those insurers would be likely to rise. Please contact the Parish Clerk for further information Hedgerow Survey: One person had come forward and was willing to take part in the mapMore volunteers ping of the hedgerows around the village. Free training is available and the task is not onerous. needed for our Hedgerow Survey! Free Please contact the clerk if you would like to be a part of this important venture.

“Some members went to Southwold Theatre and saw “Dick Barton Special Agent” – a trip down memory lane and a good night out.”

Our August meeting, at which we had two visitors, was very good. One of our visitors, Gilly Bursnoll came and taught us how to make our own necklaces and bracelets. The winner of the competition was Joyce Lee with her favourite brooch; well done Joyce! Some members went to Southwold Theatre and saw “Dick Barton Special Agent” – a trip down memory lane and a good night out. We also visited Bedfield Hall and had a tour of the lovely house and gardens. We had an enjoyable afternoon, which concluded with home made cakes and tea. Sadly, one of our long-standing members, Marjorie Jones, passed away very recently. Marjorie joined us in January 1983 and was a very loyal and enthusiastic member. She entered all the competitions; really enjoyed her W.I. and she will be sadly missed. Early announcement, We shall be holding a Craft Fair on Saturday the 3rd November so watch out for future posters and put the date into your diary. See you at the next meeting on Thursday 13th September at 7.30 in the Community Centre. Iris Badcock Press Secretary Following the printing of the Jam Preservation book, we are going to be filmed at various times during the day on Thursday 13th September for the Bygones Programme. The producers want to film a part of our W.I. meeting at 6.00 pm on that night, so any members that want to come along to the meeting are welcome, we would love to see you. This means that we will have a pre W.I. meeting before the proper one at 7.30 pm. During the interval, between the end of the filming and the start of the proper meeting we will be serving Tea, Coffee and Cakes. Please be there at 6.00 pm at the latest for the filming. Contact Club Yoga on Tuesdays - be put through your paces by Polly!

Stradbroke Area Contact Club Sorry folks, I have neglected my column in the magazine for a couple of months and now I must bring you up to date on the goings on at the club for July and August. Anything beyond that is now history! On July 17th it was open day at Dee’s (our coordinators) house but really it was a Garden Party with us all in our summer dresses and the male members of our Club wearing their summer shirts. We had lovely weather and lots of nice food and we would like to thank Dee for giving us a lovely day. Following that we had a very successful day on the 21st July at the Stradbroke Country Fare where we had a “Bric-a-Brac” stall. Many thanks to Pam and Peggy for their great help on and after that very busy day. Many congratulations to the organisers of the fare as it was a great success. Same next year please!!! On July the 24th we had a very happy day sailing on the broads for two and one half hours. We joined the boat at Wroxham but not before we’d had Fish and Chips at a near by restaurant. Our regular meeting on Tuesdays are still in full swing with Polly our Yoga instructor putting us through our paces. Joan, our cook, serves us up good food so as a result we are a happy and healthy lot. Many thanks to our intrepid co-ordinator Dee. We are all off on another outing, but this time to Lowestoft, on August the 21st and I will tell you all about that in my next bulletin. I will be in touch, Ella Owen.

Stradbroke Local History Group Stradbroke Local

We teamed up with Fressingfield to go on a delightful trip to Orford History Group Castle last month. The weather was beautiful and we a fine guided tour of the castle with a talk on its history. There was no meeting in August, so our next event will be a visit to the gardens at Thorpe Hall. More details in the next magazine. Quiz question for this month is: From 100 years ago - which village resident first recommended gunpowder sandwiches as a cure for blood poisoning ? Mike Readman

Mid Suffolk District Council Mid Suffolk District Council’s Planning Department is currently reviewing the Local Plan and this will be replaced with a new Local Development Framework for adoption in 2009. One consultation has already been undertaken and they are now undertaking the consultation process for the next two Development Plan Documents. This will cover: 1. 2.

Generic Development Control Policies – this will replace the current planning policies by which all planning applications will be judged Site Specific Allocations – this will identify specific sites for future development.

Stradbroke has been identified as one of a number of Key Service Centres and therefore there is likely to be future housing development on sites around the village that are currently outside the Settlement Boundary. There are a number of sites in Stradbroke where landowners and/or developers have submitted “Land Bids” asking for sites to be designated for development. Please see the Village Website (www.stradbroke.org.uk) for further information and a map showing the land bid sites. Mid Suffolk District Council has organised two local meetings to discuss this next phase. They are on: Tuesday 18th September 2007 at 3.00pm – 7.00pm in the Community Centre Tuesday 20th November 2007 at 3.00pm - 7.00pm in the Community Centre Please come along and take the opportunity to make your views known. Everyone is welcome. Ann Kerr

Friends of All Saints – We’ve Done it! I expect many of you saw the article in the EADT showing that we had reached our original £20,000 target. Thank you to all of you who over the years have helped raise this outstanding amount. However there are still areas in the church roof, which include the vestry, that are not yet water tight, so we carry on raising money to make further repairs. You may also have noticed that this item also appeared on the ITV teletext site on Sunday 5th August. Good to see our village on the little silver screen – however they did place the village near Ipswich !!!! Following the recent AGM Margaret Jenkins has taken a temporary seat in the Chair, and Margaret Norris has taken over from Peter Shelford as Membership Secretary. We also welcome three new committee members – Carol Darling, Toni Wisbey and Margaret Streeter. New blood – new ideas we hope. Events at present in the planning stage are another of Gerald Jenkins excellent illustrated talks scheduled for November and in the spring we are holding a Plant Sale – plenty of advance notice to enable all you ‘green fingered’ gardeners time to strike a few cuttings. Wendy Reeves

Stradbroke Wine Society Members at our meeting on 4th August had a very amusing and entertaining evening. Members Don Darling, Patrick Downing, David Streeter and Heidi Bellamy presented their favourite wines whilst we tasted them to see if we agreed. There was also a mini wine quiz, which was won by Gerald Jenkins. On the 6th October we are going on a coach trip to Sandyford Vineyard at Great Sampford, Essex for a tour of the vineyards and tasting with luncheon. Claudene Merritt, Secretary.

Stradbroke Country Fair We would like to thank all the organisations that participated in the Country Fair. We were blessed with good weather and very good attendance. As a result we have been able to donate £700.00 towards the extension at the Stradbroke Surgery. Many people have asked us if we will have a fair next year. The answer is almost certainly YES. We will take the final decision in November but we have fixed a provisional date of 19th July 2008. The performance of RoughCast’s Chaucer’s Tales sadly had to be moved from our usual venue of Barn Meadow due to earlier rain but we were very kindly accommodated by Elaine and Jim at the Queen’s Head. The car park was transformed into a stage and we had a thoroughly entertaining afternoon. Thanks to Jim and Elaine for saving the day. Maureen John on behalf of the Festival Committee.

Stradbroke, Laxfield and Fressingfield Discovery Day Stradbroke Community Centre Saturday 22 September 10.00am to 4.00pm Discover Suffolk is an innovative project led by Suffolk County Council that is promoting recreation and tourism at the community level in the northeast of the county. A new website www.discoversuffolk.org.uk has been launched and has lots of information for visitors and local people. There are also pages so that community events and businesses can be promoted and the website is now attracting up to 250,000 hits a month. As part of the project local footpaths and bridleways are being improved to make them more accessible and easier to use by everyone. Circular walks are also promoted on the website. Sustainable transport is a key priority for the project and existing public transport services will be looked at and improved if necessary. The Suffolk countryside is a ideal to explore on a bike so cycle stands will be provided at pubs and other tourist attractions. We want to work with local people to develop countryside access, business and tourism around Stradbroke. This is your chance to make a difference. Your comments and suggestions will be used to improve the local area, support the local economy and develop the website. In particular we would like to find out about: • What makes the Stradbroke area special? • Local business ventures • Improvements that would make the rights of way network easier to use • Your favourite walks and rides • Any local amenities and tourist facilities you would like to promote Please drop in to the Community Centre at any time during the day for a chat. If you would like more information about the Discovery Day or the Project please call me, Mark Timms on 01379 788008.

Eye Do Dance! When was the last time you heard “I‘m bored” or I’m fed up”? Well, if your children are interested in learning to dance, then you have a chance to change it. Graham and Ann West are hoping to give all the local children the same kind of opportunity to experience the joy of dance that is available to children in larger towns and cities. They are planning to organise dance classes, which will be taken by qualified and experienced dance teachers, in Disco/Freestyle, Rock N Roll and Street Dance. The classes are for any child of primary school age (5 to 11) and are designed for both boys & girls. The lessons will be of 1 hours duration per week, every Thursday after school during term time and will commence on the 20th September 2007 at the Eye Community Centre. As they appreciate that cost is always a consideration they have priced each lesson at £2.50 per 1-hour session. To enable them to plan the program for groups of under and over 8 years of age and to organise the class sizes they need each parent interested to register with them before the 14th September. If you are interested in registering or just want more information then please contact Graham or Ann on 01379 870813.

Inter Village Games, 2007/8 The Stradbroke team put on a fine and sporting performance in June, and we were not first or last of the eight villages taking part, coming first in the Tennis, the Car Treasure Hunt and the Women’s Cross-Country. We look forward to next year when the Games will be at Weybread. To start our preparations, there will be a GAMES EVENING at the Community Centre at Wednesday, 5th September. The doors open at 7.00 pm for a 7.30 start at Carpet Bowls, Table Tennis, Pool and Darts. The bar will be open, and all are welcome to take part or watch a variety of sports and games. A Cinema is coming to Stradbroke A Cinema is coming near you on Thursday, 4th.October, 7.00 pm for 7.30pm at the Stradbroke Community Centre. The Bar will also be open for refreshments. The film stars Naomi Watts, Edward Norton, Live Schreiber, Sally Hawkins, Toby Jones, and Diana Rigg. The film is set against the visually stunning backdrop of China during one of its most dramatic periods of upheaval and tells of a unique love story of an estranged husband and wife who find redemption and unexpected grace in a very unlikely place. Stradbroke News & Views Neighbourhood Watch You’re in good company when you’re with Neighbourhood Watch www.neighbourhoodwatch.net As reported in the July edition of this magazine, Joan Hawkes who has, for the last 16 years, been the Neighbourhood Watch Coordinator for the Stradbroke Area has resigned from that post. We wish her well and will miss her being there at the end of a telephone. Joan would like to remind Stradbroke residents that they should no longer contact her about any Watch matters but talk to the Safer Neighbourhood Team on 01284 774100 instead.

Words Of Thanks From... Village Bells May I say how lovely it was to hear the church bells ring out so beautifully across the village on the evening of Saturday 9th June. Stradbroke Football Club Training is now being held weekly on a Wednesday evening on the Football Field at 7.00pm and all are welcome. By the time you read this report we will have played our first friendly game, which is away to Redgrave. The bingo evening held on the 10th August raised approx £100 for club funds and the next one is on the 14th September. The Football Club has to pay over £1000 each year on insurance and other expenses alone for the two teams and this is why we run the Bingo Games. Remember the more people who play the larger the cash prizes so hopefully we will see you there! M. Ellis

Stradbroke Badminton Club The new season of badminton begins at the Business and Enterprise College in Wilby Road on Tuesday September 4th from 8 pm until 10 pm.
