Stop Press! The Festival Committee are sorry to announce that there will not be a Village Festival this year. We would like to thank everyone who has contributed in past years and maybe next year it will be resurrected.
If you are looking to book an entertaining act for your fete, get more going on your village hall or want to organise an event for your community but are not sure where to start, then this event is for you. The one day seminar “Down Your Lane – Up Your Street”, will take place on Thursday 26 March at The Cut in Halesworth. The day aims to give people ideas for developing events in their communities across Suffolk and think about doing something extraordinary in 2009. The seminar will include inspirational speakers from street fairs to village festivals. Arts interludes will also take place throughout the day, offering snippets of shows from performers who will be available to book for events. There will also be the opportunity for people to pick up practical hints and tips through workshops and an interactive arts market whereby performers will be on hand to talk about their work. Zoey Furzer, Arts Officer at Mid Suffolk District Council said: “We hope this seminar will provide people with ideas on what’s possible in programming arts in their communities. We have a wonderful line-up of speakers and performers, all of whom have a great deal of experience delivering amazing work and wowing audiences”. The event is being organised in partnership by the arts services at Mid Suffolk District Council and Suffolk Coastal District Council with generous support from Suffolk County Council. The cost to attend is £10 including lunch, with concessions available. To book your space, please telephone: 01394 444538 or email: arts@suffolkcoastal.gov.uk
Your Editor Speaks... I had many interesting discussions over the Christmas period about many things and one of them I would like to bring to your attention. A gentleman spoke to me and asked me if I would include an article about the “Middy”, which is the nickname of the Mid Suffolk Light Railway. He told me something about its history, how it was closed prior to the Beeching massacre and how he thought that the memories of its trains and its foibles would slowly be lost from the memory of local people. So, if any local people can remember riding on the “Middy”, or seeing it pass through Stradbroke Station, or have any amusing tales about it I would love to hear from you and use them to create an article about the railway we used to have! On another topic, I was sent a book about King Edmund of East Anglia, which I had intended to tell you about in this edition of the magazine but, as space in this magazine is particularly short, I will include it next month. Alpha and Omega Jesus is the Alpha Before anything was made, Jesus was with the Father and the Holy Spirit. For through Him, all things were created, visible and invisible. In Him, all things hold together – the universe, the world, all the nations. Jesus gives new life to those who request his presence in their lives. Jesus said “I am the Alpha and Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end”. Rev 22 v 13 Jesus is the Omega As everything began in Him, so will all things end in Him. The governments of this earth may crumble, as leaders rise and fall and as the earths resources are stripped, misused, you can rejoice for Christ is ultimately in control. He sees the end from the beginning, always has and always will. He can give you a new start, and refresh you in your weariness. Jesus said “It is done, I am the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. If you are thirsty, I will give you drink without cost from the spring of the water of life. Rev 21 v 6. Emmanuel: God With Us. May each one of us know the confidence of Christ Jesus Jackie

The Rectory - Tel: 384363 Email: davidstreeter@suffolkonline.net Church Website: www.allsaintsstradbroke.suffolkonline.net Dear Friends, The Christmas Services were well-attended and very joyful. The readers at the Candle-Lit Carol Service were Phoebe, Owen and Fergus Morgan, Victoria Hammond, Grace Deatker, Joanna Hackett and Roy Lee with Dougie Chittock at the organ. The Benefice Choir led our singing with superb soloists and descants. The decorated and multi-lit Christmas Tree and the floral arrangements were much admired (We will have a Flower Arrangers’ Coffee Morning in March to plan for the future) and the Star, over a hundred foot high, brought seasonal happiness to many who saw it as a sign of the wonderful news of the Birth of our Saviour. The Ven. Geoffrey Arrand, Archdeacon of Suffolk is our preacher for the Benefice Service of Holy Communion at Stradbroke on Sunday, 8th February, at 10.00 am. Please be present to welcome him to All Saints Church that morning. Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, 25th February, with Holy Communion at 10.00 am, and there’s a service on Thursdays at 10.00 am from 5th March to the 2nd April. Confirmation will be administered by the Diocesan Bishop in Worlingworth Church on Sunday, 22nd March, at 3.30 pm. Please tell me if you, or a member of your family, wish to be prepared for this service, for admission to Holy Communion, after a course of instruction. The churchyard is maintained to a high standard by Matthew and Benny Hammond for the Parish Council, but the paths and the flower-beds are our responsibility, and Lewis Allen and Jack James are doing fine work keeping them tidy & free of weeds. The church clock’s striking mechanism was repaired in December. Our thanks go to the Parish Council for a contribution to the cost, and to Bob Rayson for keeping the clock so accurately wound to keep us on time, and hearing each hour in twenty-four. Our own church website – see above – is now ready for your visits. Please make plenty, and do let me know if you would like to help to develop it – for the Church. With all good wishes, David Streeter. Church Cleaning will be on the Thursday, 5th. February, 10.00 am onwards

Suffolk Family Carers We are an independent charity, our services are free! A Family Carer is defined as any age; ‘looking after’ a relative, friend, partner, parent/s or child/siblings who cannot manage without them because of illness, age or physical, learning or mental health difficulties. Many Family Carers, care for more than one person. The main concerns are when caring impacts on every part of the Family Carers’ life. It is then, especially, that support is needed which is more focused, planned, and often outside the home, with a complete break from the caring role. This we know sustains situations, otherwise there would be many more people cared for in residential homes, hospitals and other establishments. Please call our Helpline for more information; 01473 232679 or visit our website; www.suffolk-carers.co.uk

The Branch urgently needs to find a Treasurer so any body in the Village interested in taking on this role please contact either The Secretary Jeremy Higgins on 01379 384300 or myself on 01379 870509. You do not need to be ex service, and you can be either male or female. Only 10 members attended our January meeting due to the very poor weather and illness and no guest speaker could be obtained. The meeting was kept short and acting Treasurer Jeremy Higgins presented the up to date accounts. The Poppy Appeal Totals to date are Laxfield £1,922, and Stradbroke and Wilby £3,025.85. Both organisers, Ted Bootle and Jeremy Higgins, were given a vote of thanks, and our thanks go also to all those who donated so generously to achieve these excellent amounts. Branch Certificates of Appreciation have recently been given to the family of our late president Dick Shepherd, as he was not well enough to receive it in person just prior to his death, and to the family of George Barker, who is at present in a local Nursing Home. Dick Shepherd was mentioned in The Legion Tribute given by myself at the start of the meeting. He had had an outstanding career as a Battle of Britain Pilot and had been awarded The DFC and Bar plus The Croix de Guerre. He had risen to the rank of Group Captain. Our Christmas Meeting with Carols followed by Christmas Lunch had been attended by over 30 members and guests, and was a great success. The Lunch was held in Laxfield Village Hall served by The King’s Head, The Carols were conducted by our Chaplain The Rev’d David Streeter, and Dougie Chittock played the music on his Keyboard. Peter Gipson, The County Chairman, and his family were welcomed and he responded at the end of the Dinner. The next Branch Meeting is on Thursday 5th February at Laxfield KH at 11.30am and a speaker is being arranged. Five members of The Branch attended the Suffolk County RBL Conference on Saturday 17th January at Needham Market. David Streeter our Branch Padre led the short service at the start, and Ian Bushnell carried The Branch Standard. Michael Burton was present in his capacity as a County Vice-President, and The Branch Delegate was Jeremy Higgins. The Director General of The Royal British Legion, Chris Simkins, gave the main speech outlining the present and future work in progress, and we were pleased to hear that a new Respite Home in our Area is still under active consideration. Michael Burton – Branch Chairman.

Stradbroke Women’s Institute
We started 2009 of with a “Bang” – our January meeting was a real Celebration. We had invited members of Fressingfield, Wilby, Worlington, and Dennington W.I.’s as our guests and along with our own members’ 42 ladies turned out on a cold nght. Our Circle Dancing Group gave us a demonstration then invited us to join them so we were able to “have a go” ourselves. It was great fun, enjoyed by everyone, dancers and onlookers. Then came the surprise of the evening, out came a lovely celebration cake, for Mary Dann, Ursula Ward, June Gould and Iris Cattermole. These ladies have been Women’s Institute members for a total of 180 years. A great achievement – congratulations! Our president, Sue Gray, presented each lady with an award and a lovely plant, then we all enjoyed a slice and a glass of wine – a very happy evening. Diane Maynard won the competition; well done Diane! Ursula thanked Sue and the committee for a great evening and Rosemary from Fressingfield W.I. thanked us “Our Circle Dancing for inviting them Our next meeting will be on Thursday February 12th, 7.30 pm Group gave us a demIris Badcock, Press Secretary onstration then invited us at the Community Centre. to join them so we were able to “have a go” ourselves. “

Neighbourhood Watch P.C. Tim Green will be in the Library on Thursday 26th February 2009 from 11.00 to 11.30 am, to meet members of the public who wish to discuss concerns with him. Some elderly people in Suffolk have been the targets of bogus callers pretending to be from the NHS, offering Flu vaccinations. This not a routine service provided by the NHS. Any caller’s identity should be checked and if in doubt report callers immediately to the police on 999, giving as much information as possible. There have been several thefts from building in the area recently, details of two cases follow: At about 11.00 am on Tuesday 16th December someone forced entry into a house in Denham but was seen and ran off. The offender was described as a skinny white male, about 30 years old, in back hooded top, Khaki Green Trousers and carrying a green rucksack. On Thursday 8th January, jewellery was stolen during the daytime by forced entry into a house in the Stradbroke area, while the owners were out. And finally there have been several thefts of horse tack in Mid Suffolk recently. Stradbroke Primary School Happy New Year from all at Stradbroke CEVC Primary! We are already a little way into 2009 and I am making good progress with my New Year’s resolution to complete our outdoor Infant play area. The old changing rooms (from a swimming pool the school had years ago), which turned into sheds, have now been demolished. With the erection of a canopy, installation of doors from our spare classroom and resurfacing of the playground area, we are well on the way to completing phase one of the building project. Indeed it will create a very impressive outdoor area in which our youngest learners will be able to play even in the wettest of weather. Again I offer any new parents in the area or those of you considering where to send your children an invitation to look around Stradbroke Primary. Come and see the new play area in its infancy- new reception children will be able to fully utilise this when they arrive in September! Our new Senior Management team remain as busy as ever and have taken up exciting professional development opportunities this year. Mrs Poole our Deputy continues her work as a leading Literacy teacher for the County. I am taking part in the NCSL “New Visions” course and as part of this have had the opportunity to visit other schools. Small schools are exciting, vibrant places to work and it is always interesting to visit others and compare good practise. Pupils have settled back well after the Christmas holiday and are working hard. Year 5 and 6 continue to have the opportunity to learn to play a brass instrument and it is incredible how quickly they make progress with this. They will be performing at Snape Maltings in March in a children’s orchestra, a great opportunity to experience performing live music. During the course of the Year all our children have a chance to swim at our local pool. The Spring and Summer terms offer our youngest learners this opportunity. Again it is amazing how quickly the children make progress. I really enjoy working with our local schools. This year we are taking part in a joint residential trip with our Year Six children to Edale in the Peak District. This is a really good opportunity for Year Six children in this area to meet each other before they transfer to their High Schools. The School Council are always good at helping to make decisions within school. Most recently they have helped select a design for a new “Parent’s shelter” which will be paid for through a grant we received from producing a School Travel Plan. The shelter will be erected on the playground to offer shelter and shade from the weather for our parents. Finally I would like to offer my thanks to our friends of the school (the FOSPs). We are really lucky at Stradbroke Primary to have such hard working and committed friends of the school. I really value their support and organisational skills- most recently in delivering a much enjoyed Halloween school Disco and Christmas Fete. If you would like to see photos of school events and catch up on the latest news- check out our fabulous new school website at: http://www.stradbrokevc.suffolk.sch.uk. Letters to the Editor
“Sir, We would like to say a big “Thank you” to everyone who supported us on our third year of fund raising. Our Christmas lights display brought in £400. We would like to take this opportunity to say a special thanks to Jan & Wag Nollar for their help, once again, in putting them up and taking them down. This year we had no problems with “going into the darkness” thanks to Marty. We would also like to thank Mr Routen who took some more photos for us again this year; we are very grateful. We hope we will be able to “decorate up” again this year but, we will have to wait and see, as although we enjoy doing it, it is costly!. We never thought that in this present climate we would have raised this amount of money but we have so thanks to you all, once again, and wish you all a very happy and healthy new year. Jan & Barry, 55 Westhall Editors Note, Jan & Barry sent in, with their letter, the receipt from the East Anglian Air Ambulance for the £400 raised. “Sir, We were very sad to hear of the disappearance of the 'Floral Tribute' we put on our dear friends grave a few days before Christmas in Stradbroke Cemetery. I hope the person that stole this will have it on their conscience or maybe someone needed it more for a present!! This floral tribute (in a large basket) was in remembrance of a young lady who herself gave so much to others at Christmas. Yours sincerely, Mrs. R. Brooks” “Sir, We would like to thank all those who came to see the Christmas Lights out side our house, 21 Woodfields, and donated to our chosen charity The Fire Service Benevolent Fund, We raised £52.20 for this charity, so thanks again to all involved. Roly & Angela Copping” “Sir, I would like to thank all concerned in raising £420 at the “Children’s Society” box opening. Arlene Mills” Vicky Johnson (5th December 1985 – 6th January 2009) For those who knew Vicky you will recall a vivacious girl with a quick smile, a natural clown, but also with an abrasive side when she believed things were wrong! Vicky had clear goals in life, and off her own bat gained scholarship to Framingham College VI form, to Texas to do American Law whilst at University and latterly, from Gray’s Inn to pursue her dream of becoming a barrister. This was the same girl who could lose an Elephant in a matchbox and forget her shoes when going out to dinner. However she was passionate about her career, but not as an end in itself but as a tool for helping others – “stubbornly unselfish” as one of her peers remarked. We were devastated as any parents and family would be on the loss of their child and sibling. As Robert, her younger brother, remarked “what a **** waste” and he is right for Vicky had a lot more to give. Nonetheless our grief has been relieved by a number of positives. Vicky was on the organ donor’s register for some years and by chance we had discussed her wishes in the light of the “opting in or out debate” at Christmas. Her organs have gone to several people, including an 18-month-old child who had only two days left to live. We trust they will all go on to live full and rich lives. As a parent, you only have your child on loan until they spread their wings and make a new life for themselves. We have been a part of that journey and when we attend the celebration of her life we will, I am sure, hear stories and gain further insight into the expanding life of our youngest. The kindness of everyone who has spoken sent a card and /or thought of us has been heart warming and reassuring. It has been a great comfort in our low moments and a stout help in going forward. Special mention needs to be made of Tina and Angeline and all those who have helped in every way. They have lightened a heavy burden. We thank you all most deeply for all your kindness and assistance. Finally, I would also ask you to think of the other person involved in the accident. They too have a life that has been shattered and our thoughts go out to them also. David, Jenny, Katy and Robert Johnson.”

Voice Your Choice A project coming to Mid Suffolk will ensure that everyone who lives and works in the area will have a greater say about things that matter most to them. The Mid Suffolk Locality Pilot project called 'Your Place’ will aim to bring together everyone who works and lives in the local community to explore the best ways of working together to improve their area. The project is being led by Suffolk County Council in close partnership with Mid Suffolk District Council, Mid Suffolk Local Strategic Partnership, Suffolk Police, NHS Suffolk, Mid Suffolk Action Partnership and local town and parish councils. Two pilot areas in Mid Suffolk have been identified based on the Police Safer Neighbourhood Team areas around Stowmarket and Mid Suffolk South. In these two areas, community representatives are being invited to join local elected members to sit on a 'Community Board'. The Community Board will seek the views of local people in order to prioritise how resources are used in the pilot areas. The 'Your Place' project will be contacting different parts of the local community in the pilot area over the next few months to invite their views and involvement. Local publications and a website will be used to keep local people informed of the project progress. If you live or work in the South Mid Suffolk area (refer to maps), are interested in representing your community on a Community Board and would like more information please contact Sara Blake on telephone number 01473 260761 or email sara.blake@suffolkcc.gov.uk . Similarly if you would like more information on the project and how else you might be involved please contact Sara Blake.

Stradbroke Charitable Trust Trustees: Peter Smith, Gerald Jenkins, Roger Turkington, Judy Castleton and Ann Kerr The Stradbroke Health Trust has changed its name! This change is to make clearer its function as a charity to promote projects which improve the life and the facilities of Stradbroke and the immediate surrounding area. The new name of 'The Stradbroke Charitable Trust' is a more accurate description of the nature of our Trust Deed and it avoids confusion with NHS Health Trusts which are directly concerned with NHS matters. The Stradbroke Charitable Trust has no involvement in the Surgery other than owning the building and leasing it to the medical practice. The first major Trust project, which started in 1994/5, was to construct a new Doctor's Surgery for Stradbroke and so avoid the transfer of all medical services to Fressingfield and their concentration there. With the help of generous donations from local people, some grants and a substantial mortgage, the Surgery was opened in 1996 on land leased from the Parish Council. In 2004 a further project was to support the Community Centre with a substantial grant towards the cost of the installation of the new suspended insulated ceiling. All would agree that the Community Centre is now a much warmer, comfortable and friendly place than it used to be. In 2005 we were able to install air-conditioning in the waiting room of the Medical Centre. In early 2008 the Medical Centre was enlarged and improved to provide more space for nursing and dispensing services, an extra consulting room and further IT and telephone facilities. These new facilities were funded from the income of the Trust, then still called the Stradbroke Health Trust. It is fair to say that these improvements are much appreciated by the staff and patients alike. In January 2003 a number of ancient Stradbroke Charities were incorporated into the Trust which had previously been run under the auspices of the Parish Council. This additional capital and income allowed us to complete our second major project, the construction of the permissive footpath along the Laxfield Road to the Cemetery. This was opened in December 2007 and is very much used. Of course, without the generosity of the landowners, the Smiths and the Barkers, in allowing this path to be built on their land, the project could not even have been started. We also received generous support from Mid-Suffolk and Suffolk County Councils. The Trust is pleased to announce that it has recently received a very generous bequest by the late Reggie Elvin, a founding member of the Health Trust. He had expressed his wish that this legacy should be used to support sport and fitness throughout the village. These additional resources now permit us to help with a third major project. This is to support the Parish Council with the draining of the Playing Field and the provision of a 500metre fitness/walking trail around its perimeter. We also plan to install outdoor fitness equipment along part of the trail that can be used by everyone. Further donations and grants will be needed but we are hopeful that they can be obtained and that this project can be completed in 2009. If you have an idea for a worthwhile project that is for the benefit of the village or would like to request some funding for a suitable scheme, please get in touch. Equally we are very happy to accept donations or legacies that can be used for the forthcoming drainage/fitness project or other future schemes. Peter Smith, Chairman Tel/Fax 01379 384 825

The next meeting will be on Wednesday 4th February 2009 at 7.00pm in the Community Centre. Well known speaker, Pip Wright will be telling us what is was like in Suffolk at the time of the plague. He will take us through the various visitations of the bubonic plague with special reference to Ipswich in 1665. The next Village Archive Slideshow (No.4 in the series) will now be held in April 2009 - more details in next month’s magazine. The editor mentioned the “Middy” - The Mid Suffolk Light Railway - on the front page this month and these photos show a happy children’s day trip in 1908 on the middy and a sad day after it had closed ...
If anyone has any particular memories about the “Middy” we would love to hear from you.

What is a School Sport Partnership? School Sport Partnerships were launched nationwide by the government and cover all secondary and primary schools, grouping them in “families.” Suffolk has 8 School Sport Partnerships. Stradbroke B&E College and its family of Primary schools is part of what is now known as the High Suffolk School Sport Partnership. (HSSSP) There are a number of roles within our school sport partnership. • Steve Parry, the Partnership Development Manager (PDM) is responsible for the strategic development of the partnership and liaison with other agencies. • Alan Peatfield, the School Sport Co-ordinator (SSCo) is responsible for the co-ordination and development of PE and school sport within the Stradbroke family. The Primary Link Teachers (PLT) are responsible for the development and delivery of PE and sport within their schools. The overall objective is for all children to be offered at least 4 hours of sport every week, comprising of at least 2 hours of PE and sport at school and in addition the opportunity for at least a further 2-3 hours beyond the school day (delivered by a range of school, community and club providers). One important aspect of our work is to try and develop structured links with local sports clubs. Youngsters are the future lifeblood of all local sports clubs and if we can help assist clubs to encourage and develop these youngsters, each club will hopefully become more secure about its future. We are looking to update our database of sports clubs and their contact officials within the locality. Consequently, if any local club, from archery to volleyball, (and all letters in between!) would care to contact me, I can then signpost your club within the local schools and help promote your existence! Also, I would be pleased to talk through some ideas which we believe would be beneficial to you. • HSSSP is in a position to help Clubs to secure funding to develop youth sections within their club. This funding can be used to pay for training of coaches, pay for existing coaches, transport, purchase equipment, hire of facilities, cost of any CRB checks and a number of other costs. • Are you a parent/adult/club who is interested in gaining a coaching/instructing qualification?? ….. or are you already a qualified coach / instructor in a sport/activity looking for coaching opportunities?? If so, please contact me – we may be able to help you. We are also looking for coaches who have experience in working with young disabled sportspeople. Alan Peatfield – SSCo ssco@hartismere.co.uk or call 01379 872723.

St Elizabeth Hospice Do you dare take on St Elizabeth Hospice’s Great Xscape? St Elizabeth Hospice is inviting teams of four people to sign up for the Great Xscape on Saturday 21st March. Teams are not allowed any help from friends and family and will be without money, mobile phones, navigational equipment or even a map so a good sense of direction will certainly help. Once at the secret location there will be a buffet to recharge your batteries and a raffle. There will also be a prize awarded to the team who make it back in the quickest time and for those who wish to take the challenge a step further; there will be a prize for the best fancy dress. Domestic Information Help
Suffolk
Finding out what we need to know isn’t always easy. You’ve probably had the experience of making six telephone calls only to end up back where you started. Very often, it’s not that the help isn’t there; it just seems impossible to know where to find it. The Domestic Information Helpline does not provide any services directly, but helps callers to track down a company, organisation or person who does. Details of who does what, where they do it and what they charge are available through our helpline.
Here’s just a flavour of the requests for help we have received: • housework • small sewing jobs • fixing a leaking tap • respite care • gardening • unpacking after a house-move • shopping • meal preparation ...and many, many more! In short, it’s all about assisting older people to access the help they need, because finding out isn’t always easy. If you think we can help you, do get in touch.
