Con Nacho Figueras, Polo Connoisseur de St. Regis como anfitrión, vivimos de cerca el deporte de los reyes por un día. El escenario: la finca El Yacaré, en General Rodríguez, Argentina. With Nacho Figueras, the St. Regis Polo Connoisseur, as host, we experience firsthand the sport of kings for a day. The scene: the El Yacaré farm in General Rodríguez, Argentina.
Hoy el cielo está muy azul, sin una sola nube, y un aire ligeramente frío corre de vez en cuando. El sol hace que el pasto, perfectamente cortado, brille con el tono de verde que usaba para dibujar cuando era niña. Sin ser ninguna experta, puedo decir que hoy es un gran día para un partido de polo. Y estoy segura de que no soy la única que piensa así. En el enorme campo que se extiende frente a mí hay ocho caballos; sobre ellos, cuatro jugadores vestidos de blanco, cuatro más de negro, todos deslizándose entre el verde y el azul con una agilidad impresionante. Los veo tan relajados que, por un momento, parecería que estoy siendo testigo de un juego casual entre amigos, disfrutando una mañana en las afueras de Buenos Aires. Pero los que están jugando frente a mí son el equipo St. Regis –liderado por el célebre jugador de polo argentino Nacho Figueras– y el Black Watch, peleándose la St. Regis Polo Cup en el campo de la finca El Yacaré. Pero para entender cómo llegamos aquí, hay que regresar cien años en el tiempo. Lo que existe entre St. Regis y el polo es una larga amistad que comenzó en eventos sociales. A principios del siglo XX, Governor’s Island –una pequeña isla al sur de Manhattan donde se disputaban partidos de polo– era el lugar para ver y ser visto. Este deporte, era uno de los pasatiempos favoritos de la familia Astor –dueños del hotel. El St. Regis, ubicado en la esquina de la 55 y la Quinta Avenida– y el motivo por el cual muchos de los aficionados y jugadores de este deporte, que creció en popularidad después de la Primera Guerra Mundial, se hospedaban en él. No obstante, el inicio de la Segunda Guerra Mundial menguó su popularidad, pues los caballos se usaban para deberes militares. Sin embargo, es bien sabido que las amistades verdaderas sobreviven una separación, y en 2008, hubo un reencuentro, justo en el lugar donde todo comenzó: Governor’s Island. Ahí, en el Veuve Clicquot Manhattan Polo Classic, St. Regis participó como socio fundador y apareció en escena un nuevo personaje: Nacho Figueras, capitán del equipo Black Watch. Con la experiencia que le otorgan casi 30 años en el campo, el resultado fue casi natural: se convirtió, en 2010, en el Polo Connoisseur de St. Regis y desde entonces, junto a su esposa Delfina Blaquier, es parte de la acción en el campo y más allá de él.

Today, the sky is very blue, without a single cloud and an occasional, slightly cool breeze. The sun makes the perfectly-cut grass shine, the same shade of green I used to draw when I was a little girl. Without being an expert, I can say that today is a great day for a polo match. And I’m sure I’m not the only one who thinks so. On the huge field there are eight horses in front of me; riding these, four players dressed in white and four more in black, all gliding between the green and blue with impressive agility. They look so relaxed that, for a moment, it seems I’m witnessing a casual game with friends, enjoying a morning on the outskirts of Buenos Aires. But the players before me are the St. Regis team – led by celebrated Argentine polo player Nacho Figueras – and the Black Watch, fighting for the St. Regis Polo Cup in El Yacaré’s field. But to understand how we got here, we must go back in time one hundred years. A long friendship, which began at social events, exists between St. Regis and polo. In the early 20th century, Governor’s Island – a small island south of Manhattan where polo games were played – was the place to see and be seen. This sport was one of the favorite pastimes of the Astor family – owners of the The St. Regis Hotel, located on the corner of 55th Street and Fifth Avenue – and was the reason why many of the sport’s fans and players, which grew in popularity after World War I, were staying there. However, with the onset of World War II, its popularity waned because horses were being used for military duties. However, it’s well known that true friendships survive separation, and in 2008, there was a reunion, right in the place where it all began: Governor’s Island. There, in the Veuve Clicquot Manhattan Polo Classic, the St. Regis participated as a founding partner, and a new character came on the scene: Nacho Figueras, captain of the Black Watch team. With the experience of almost 30 years in the field, the result was almost natural: he became, a few years later, the St. Regis Polo Connoisseur and since then, together with his wife Delfina Blaquier, has been part of the action on the field and beyond it.
1 EL DÍA ESPERADO
Es fácil olvidar lo peligroso que es el polo. El caballo y el jugador parecen compartir una sola mente que les dicta lo que tienen que hacer para atacar o defender, pero a las velocidades a las que corren, las caídas son un riesgo frecuente, además de que la pelota puede llegar a viajar hasta a casi 180 km/h. Nacho ha sobrevivido varias lesiones fuertes –en 2013 se rompió una parte de la pelvis y se desgarró varios músculos de la pierna–, pero al final siempre regresa al campo. Al ver la rapidez con la que se mueven los caballos y escuchar el sonido de su galope sobre el pasto, entiendo que debe ser difícil dejar atrás la adrenalina de un deporte como éste. Afortunadamente, este partido termina sin accidentes y el equipo St. Regis recibe el trofeo que avala su triunfo. Después de la celebración, se acerca el momento de un evento que la familia Figueras lleva esperando durante mucho, mucho tiempo: la primera subasta de ponis de Cría Yatay, el proyecto de cría de caballos de polo que Nacho y su equipo comenzaron hace más de diez años. Mientras el sol se pone, el establo de Cría Yatay se empieza a llenar de luz, música y gente. El complejo fue desarrollado por el despacho argentino Estudio Ramos dentro de El Yacaré, inspirándose en los tres arquitectos favoritos de Nacho –Tadao Ando, Mies van der Rohe y Luis Barragán–, con espacios abiertos y escaleras circulares donde caben 44 caballos. Nos damos una vuelta por las caballerizas para ver de cerca a los ponis que estarán en la subasta más tarde y nos enamoramos de JeanMichel, un guapísimo macho de color marrón obscuro. Jean-Michel, como el resto de los caballos presentes, es producto de esa década de esfuerzo que ha sido Cría Yatay. Lo que comenzó con la compra de diez embriones, creció con la adquisición de más embriones y yeguas, y hoy, el resultado son 500 caballos criados en la finca.

It’s easy to forget how dangerous polo is. The horse and player seem to share one mind that tells them what they have to do to attack or defend, but at the speeds they run, falls are a common hazard, in addition to a ball that can travel up to almost 50 mph. Nacho has survived several serious injuries – in 2013, he broke part of his pelvis and tore several leg muscles – but in the end he always comes back to the field. Seeing how quickly the horses move and hearing the sound of their gallop over the grass, I understand the adrenaline of a sport like this must be hard to leave behind. Fortunately, this match ends without accidents, and the St. Regis team receives the trophy that endorses their victory. After the celebration, an event that the Figueras family has been waiting for a long, long time approaches: the first auction of ponies from Cria Yatay, a project for breeding polo horses Nacho and his team began more than ten years ago. As the sun sets, the Cria Yatay stable begins to fill with light, music and people. The complex was developed by the Argentine firm Estudio Ramos inside El Yacaré, inspired by Nacho’s three favorite architects – Tadao Ando, Mies van der Rohe and Luis Barragán – with open spaces and circular stairs with room for 44 horses. We get a tour of the stables to see up close the ponies that will be auctioned later, and we fall in love with Jean-Michel, a handsome, dark brown male. Jean-Michel, like the rest of the horses present, is the product of a decade of effort that is Cria Yatay. What began with the purchase of ten embryos grew with the acquisition of more embryos and mares, and today, the result is 500 horses bred on the farm.

Bajo la carpa donde se realizará el remate se siente mucha expectativa. El tema de la subasta me suena a una ceremonia seria y formal, pero pronto me doy cuenta de que no es el caso. Al centro se instala un coro que, con un canto emotivo, da la bienvenida al primer grupo de caballos montados por la familia Figueras. Los caballos que desfilan no pueden describirse con otra palabra que no sea majestuosos; no es solamente su presencia física, sus músculos o el brillo de su pelo lo que impresiona, sino el respeto y el cariño con el que Nacho, Delfina y sus hijos tratan a cada uno de ellos. Pronto empieza la acción: presentan al lote de Sue Ellen, una yegua legendaria que este año ingresó al Hall of Fame por sus logros como jugadora. Sue Ellen es la madre de Billie Jean, Mary Kate, Norma Jean y Marco Antonio, quienes pronto llaman la atención de varios interesados. “¡Ochenta! ¡Ochenta y cinco! ¡Noventa!”, va anunciando el maestro de ceremonias, hasta que se vende una de las yeguas. Trato de buscar quiénes están haciendo las ofertas, pero nunca logro ubicarlos. Entre copas de vino, quesos y pequeños sándwiches de milanesa, vemos desfilar imponentes potrancas y

Under the tent where the auction will take place, a feeling of expectation takes over. An auction seems like a serious and formal ceremony to me, but soon I realize that’s not the case. In the center, a choir sets up and welcomes the first group of horses ridden by the Figueras family with an emotional song. The horses marching by can’t be described by any word other than “majestic:” it’s not only their physical presence, their muscles, the shine of their hair that impresses, but the respect and affection with which Nacho, Delfina and their children treat each one of them. Soon the action begins: they present Sue Ellen, a legendary mare who entered the Hall of Fame this year for her achievements as a player. Sue Ellen is the mother of Billie Jean, Mary Kate, Norma Jean and Marco Antonio, who soon attract the attention of various buyers. “Eighty! Eighty-five! Ninety!” the auctioneer announces until one of the mares is sold. I try to find out who is making the offers, but never manage to locate them. Between glasses of wine, cheese and small milanesa sandwiches, we watch impressive young mares and ponies parade by – my favorites have names like Beatles, Cuba Libre and Eminem – who, from that night on, have a new home. Near the end, the embryos

En el camino de regreso hacia Buenos Aires, recapitulamos lo sucedido durante el día: la intensidad del partido, la emoción de la subasta, la magnitud del reto que debe significar embarcarse en un proyecto como Cría Yatay. Afuera, grandes fincas donde otras familias mantienen viva la tradición del polo –con la misma pasión y disciplina que Nacho y St. Regis– marcan nuestro camino de regreso. Entonces vuelvo a confirmar que hoy fue un gran día para el polo.

On the way back to Buenos Aires, we sum up what happened during the day: the intensity of the game, the excitement of the auction, the magnitude of the challenge that embarking on a project like Cria Yatay must mean. Outside, large farms where other families keep the tradition of polo alive – with the same passion and discipline as Nacho and the St. Regis– mark our way back. So I confirm again that today was a great day for polo.
