Born out of Mercedes’ successful Le Mans racers of the early 50’s, the aluminium bodied 300SL has gone down as one of the all time classic road cars. First shown at the 1954 New York Motor Show, the distinctive ‘Gull Wing’ doored 300SL was said to be the world’s fastest production car with a claimed 165mph. The fuel injected 3 litre flat 6 pushed out at least 240bhp for unrivalled straight line urge, although handling had a tendency towards oversteer.

Intended as a race car, but perfectly road legal, the stunning Aston Martin DB4GT Zagato set new benchmarks for power and performance in the early 1960’s.

Built in response to customer requests following their 1959 Le Mans win, Aston Martin began their ongoing relationship with Italian stylists Zagato in creating a new smoother body for the already stylish DB4GT. Power was increased to a hefty 314bhp - almost unheard of at the time. Coupled with a svelte 1200kg kerb weight, the GT possessed exceptional speed and acceleration.

The sublime 250GTO (Gran Tourismo Omologato) remains the most prized of the classis Ferraris with examples fetching well into seven figures at auction (one example was said to have fetched £10million in the early 1990’s). A sobering thought when considering that the cost of a new one in 1962 was just £6000!

At it’s 1966 Geneva launch the Miura shocked the motoring world. Gorgeous Bertone styled bodywork coupled with the world’s first mid-engined road car changed the face of what people would expect from a sports car. The supercar was born.

A 300bhp V12 engine brings race car performance to the GTO to evoke memories of a class win at Le Mans in the early 60’s. The timeless lines were created by Pininfarina, enhanced by Scaglietti, and bore now classic Ferrari styling cues of rounded tail lamps and vertical side vents, not to mention the subtly integrated rear spoiler. A restyle took place for the 1964 model year.

Just 39 of these all time classics were made, helping to keep prices astronomically high.

Named after a famous Spanish fighting Bull, the Miura was developed in record time by a young, gifted Lamborghini team. For all its greatness however, the Muira was not the perfect car. As high speeds were approached the rear weight bias and streamlined bodywork caused the front of the car to lift. Nevertheless, the Muira will go down in history as an all time classic.
