Dear Friends, As Swedish’s new Chief Executive, I am pleased to welcome you to the 27th annual Celebrate Swedish. There have been important changes at Swedish since last year’s event—most notably our exciting affiliation with the Providence system—but one thing that hasn’t changed is Swedish’s need for the support and generosity of people like you who understand how critical a resource Swedish is for our community and region. As in the past, the proceeds from tonight’s auctions will pay for charity care for Swedish patients. In these difficult economic times, this need is greater than ever, and I hope you will think of these patients and bid generously tonight. This year’s Fund-A-Need will raise funds for Swedish’s new Multiple Sclerosis Center, which will be one of the largest and most comprehensive facilities for MS treatment and research in the country. Our region has one of the highest incidence rates for multiple sclerosis in the world, and building a truly world class MS center at Swedish, where patients can receive the kind of comprehensive care that this disease requires, is a major accomplishment. Our thanks go out to Dr. Jim Bowen and to many others at Swedish and in the MS community who have helped to make this dream come true. The Honorary Chairs for this year’s Celebrate Swedish are Richard and Betty Hedreen and Jim and Gaye Pigott. We thank them for their generous support. Their dedication and enthusiasm have inspired many and have been key in making this event a success. Many other volunteers have worked for months planning and preparing for tonight, and still more are donating their time tonight to make this evening go smoothly. Some are Swedish employees, some are former patients, and some are members of the community, but all share the deep appreciation for Swedish. I also want to thank Wells Fargo, our Presenting Sponsor for the fifteenth consecutive year. Like each of the generous corporate sponsors whose names you see in this catalog, they are an important factor in Swedish’s ability to remain strong. I hope each of you has a wonderful evening. Your presence shows that you understand why Swedish is important, and I thank you for coming to Celebrate Swedish, 2012.

Garden Bon Bons Tonight’s Gift
Thank you to each and every one of you for attending Celebrate Swedish tonight. As a token of our appreciation, please take home a box of Garden Bon Bons to plant and enjoy throughout the year. Please note, these garden truffles are for planting, not for eating! Rolled from clay, organic compost and seed, each handcrafted Bon Bon represents a seed type. Garden Bon Bons are grouped in themed selections to appeal to gardeners and foodies. Tonight’s Garden Bon Bon selection is the Italian Herbs set — basil, chives, parsley and thyme. Set a Bon Bon on top of soil in a sunny location (indoors or out, in a container or on the ground) and water until a generous green halo of sprouts appears. A very special thank you to landscape architect Anne Dowell for creating and donating this unique gift, handcrafted at her Moulton Design Studio in Seattle. Swedish touched Anne’s family in 2007 when her son was born prematurely and spent six weeks in the First Hill ICU and NICU. Thanks to Swedish, he is now a healthy, happy pre-kindergartener.
Table Centerpieces
As you enter the ballroom, these tranquil centerpieces will be sure to catch your eye. Each unique piece will be filled with multiple styles of ferns and African Violets nestled inside a clay pot. They can be used inside or outside, replanted with annuals for the summer, filled with leaves for the fall or holly and winter greens for the holidays. Designed by Martha E Harris, each piece will be available for $75. Each centerpiece may be purchased by completing the bid form in the center of the table. Volunteers will visit each table during the live auction program to facilitate centerpiece purchases. At the end of the evening, volunteers will help pack your centerpiece for safe and convenient transport.
Why pathology matters Anatomic pathology is the diagnosis of diseases through microscopic examination of organs and tissues. Having experienced and specialized pathologists diagnose your tissue samples is critical to ensure the best outcome for you—the patient. The good news is that Swedish and Providence hospitals trust CellNetix to provide the most accurate anatomic pathology to their patients. Our partnership is founded on our shared dedication to providing the best possible patient care.

Tonight’s Entertainment We hope you enjoy tonight’s entertainment, the The Johnaye Kendrick Quartet. A very special thanks to Kent Devereaux and the Cornish College of the Arts for bringing together this incredible group of musicians. We would also like to thank Cornish faculty violist Heather Bentley and the student string quartet who provided the music during the cocktail reception.
The Johnaye Kendrick Quartet Johnaye Kendrick, vocals Dawn Clement, piano Chris Symer, bass Byron Vannoy, drums With special guest Sachal Vasandani, vocals
Johnaye Kendrick attended the prestigious Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz and while there worked with many jazz legends, including Terence Blanchard, Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock and Brian Blade. In addition to her many travels with the Nicholas Payton SEXTET, Johnaye was also the featured vocalist with the Ellis Marsalis Quartet and the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra. The Orchestra won a Grammy® Award in the 2009 “Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album” category for their latest release, Book 1 on which Ms. Kendrick is featured. Ms. Kendrick resides in Seattle, WA and serves as Assistant Professor of Jazz Voice at Cornish College of the Arts. Sachal Vasandani’s third release Hi-Fly confirms the high praise showered on his two previous recordings that he is one of the freshest, most versatile artists to emerge onto the scene in recent memory. After moving to New York, Vasandani quickly became a part of the jazz scene, and made a musical home in storied clubs like the Zinc Bar. He was also tapped for a number of guest performances and recordings, notably by the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis, Wycliffe Gordon, Eric Reed, T.S. Monk, and countless other peer and mentor musicians. After Vasandani’s break-through debut recording, he toured extensively supporting Eyes Wide Open. He opened for such disparate artists from jazz trumpeter Chris Botti to pop singer Joan Osborne, garnering respect from a diverse spectrum of audiences.

Fund-a-Need: The Multiple Sclerosis Center at Swedish It’s not clear why, but the Pacific Northwest has one of the highest rates of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) in the world. About 1 of every 125 people in our community has the disease, or has a parent, child or sibling with the disease. The prevalence of MS here makes having a comprehensive local center specializing in its treatment essential. When it opened on April 9, the new Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Center at Swedish became one of the largest in the nation. This year’s Fund-a-Need will help ensure that the Center’s wellness and research programs set the international benchmark for excellence in MS care.
Wellness MS is a serious, lifelong disease that attacks the brain and spinal cord, causing a long list of neurological problems that can affect nearly any part of the body at any time. But the effects of MS go far beyond the body: MS impacts nearly every area of a person’s life. Specialized exercise and physical fitness programs will help patients improve physical function; comprehensive programming to address unique psychological, emotional and social needs will help patients continue to live full lives with MS.
Research Patients and physicians alike look forward to research discoveries that improve our understanding of MS, and identify new and better ways to diagnosis and treat the disease. Swedish is already the regional leader in MS research. An expanded research infrastructure will give patients in the Northwest greater access to clinical trials of promising new therapies, and will help Swedish improve the outlook for MS patients throughout the world.
We are honored to have Jim Bowen, M.D., director of the MS Center at Swedish, as tonight’s featured Fund-a-Need presenter. Pledges will be requested at the following levels to advance some of the most important aspects of care for MS patients: wellness and clinical research.
