Scholarship & Grant Impact Report 2018 - 2019
“
When I first joined my Theta chapter, it was for the opportunity to surround myself with an inspiring group of women. My Theta sisters encouraged me to strive for my wildest dreams. Looking back, it was this encouragement that led me to leadership roles I would have never applied for and a career I would have never considered. Now,

I am seeing the truth to the idea of being a
Theta for life. I am learning that Theta ties
run deeper than I ever could have imagined. Thank you for supporting me throughout all of my academic endeavors. ALEXA CARLSON Alpha Gamma/Ohio State 2019 scholarship recipient

Scholarship & Grant Impact Report
Nearly 150 years ago, Kappa Alpha Theta’s founders created a
nurturing space of encouragement and support in which members could pursue intellectual and personal excellence. Today, Theta Foundation’s scholarship and grant programs help make the promise of Theta for a lifetime a reality—providing
unwavering support in pursuit of highest scholarship and the widest influence for good—during college and beyond. Your generosity makes endeavors such as graduate school, professional development opportunities, and service experiences possible. It sets
Thetas apart as leaders on their campuses,
in their communities, and around the world. Theta Foundation proudly rivals our fraternal counterparts in awarding scholarships and grants at levels that allow members to strike out into the world and fearlessly
pursue their dreams.
We sincerely hope you enjoy learning about this year’s recipients of Theta Foundation scholarship and grant funding in the pages that follow. These women are leaders,
learners, doers,
and motivators. We are humbled to have a small part in supporting their success.

based on their shared qualities. We hope you will help us applaud these outstanding women on their incredible successes.
Bettie Locke Hamilton: The Leader CLAIRE NICHOLS CHAPMAN Gamma Tau/Tulsa Biology (Pre-Med) Recipient of the 2019 Bettie Locke Hamilton Founders Memorial Scholarship Claire is a natural leader in all aspects of her life, including her academics, campus and community involvement, and Theta service. As the chief executive officer of her chapter, she has implemented positive changes by empowering each officer on her leadership team to innovate in at least one way through their position. She established an Executive Feedback Series, giving members the opportunity to provide feedback anonymously to chapter leadership. Prior to acting as the chapter’s chief executive officer, Claire was recognized as a Top 10 Freshman by the University of Tulsa and was named Outstanding Sophomore by the campus Panhellenic Council. She serves as an orientation leader for incoming students at the university as well as on the Honors Selection Committee—something only a few honors program students are selected to assist with each year. She is passionate about service, and formed her chapter’s inaugural Polar Plunge team to benefit Special Olympics. Additionally, she has participated in mission trips to Honduras for the past few years, which have contributed to her goal of becoming a bilingual physician so that she can one day participate in medical mission trips and cater to the medical needs of Spanish speakers in her community.
Alice Allen Brant: The Learner KATHRYN ANN FASOLA Alpha Tau/Cincinnati Finance Recipient of the 2019 Alice Allen Brant Founders Memorial Scholarship A lifelong learner, Katie has no shortage of impressive educational experiences. She was admitted to the University of Cincinnati as a Carl H. Lindner Honors-PLUS Scholar, part of a unique and challenging honors program within UC’s College of Business. As part of this program, she has participated in co-op internships with companies such as GE Aviation, AMEND Consulting, and Takeda Oncology. Additionally, she has served on the executive team of the College of Business Ambassador program for the past two years—empowering prospective students and their families with knowledge about the collegiate experience and hosting them during shadow opportunities in her classes. The summer after her freshman year, she participated in a Habitat for Humanity Service Trip to build a house for Hurricane Katrina victims in New Orleans. Katie has served her chapter as chief recruiting officer and is the current chief executive officer. She received the Julia Wright Merill Award at her chapter’s Founders Day celebration as the junior recognized for contributing the most to Theta over the past year.

Hannah Fitch Shaw: The Motivator CAROLINE VIRGINIA DADE Alpha Mu/Missouri Broadcast Journalism: Radio/TV Reporting & Anchoring Recipient of the 2019 Hannah Fitch Shaw Founders Memorial Scholarship Caroline has positioned her chapter for success through initiatives she created and implemented. As executive assistant, she created a new attendance system for her chapter that is still in use today. As chief administrative officer, she memorized Fraternity and chapter bylaws to conduct a thorough bylaws review. And, as current recruitment director, she helped navigate the chapter’s first Continuous Open Bidding (COB) process in recent history and worked with the chief recruiting officer to create a sustainable plan for COB in the future. As a freshman, Caroline co-authored an article that was published in an online academic journal, Media Practice and Education. She presented these findings at a top academic conference in the journalism profession as the only undergraduate student out of more than 2,000 conference attendees. She has served on Mizzou’s Homecoming Steering Committee, helping plan the largest student-run homecoming celebration in the nation, and has planned and participated in Mizzou Alternative Break service trips around the country.
Bettie Tipton Lindsey: The Doer AUBREY JEAN HERMEN Alpha Phi/Tulane Communications & Spanish, Social Innovation & Social Entrepreneurship minors Recipient of the 2019 Bettie Tipton Lindsey Founders Memorial Scholarship Aubrey is the epitome of a doer. A few prime examples of her community involvement include interning for Dress for Success New Orleans, where she helped launch the organization’s inaugural fundraising gala, and volunteering as a tutor for underserved elementary and middle school students. She has also built houses alongside at-risk youth through UnCommon Construction—a nonprofit organization that hires high school apprentices to build houses to gain technical, professional, and personal skills. She currently serves as her chapter’s chief executive officer, and has made a point of implementing positive reinforcement during her tenure to ensure all members feel valued, important, and loved. Aubrey noted in her application that, “I wear my mom’s Theta badge to remind me of the noble Theta ideals that I was raised with and remind me to practice them in my everyday life.” Aubrey has also served her chapter as human resources director and scholarship director. Outside of Theta, she has positively impacted her campus as the Marketing and Public Relations Coordinator for Tulane University Campus Programming, where she developed and implemented new marketing strategies that are still being used today.
