SIMON BALSOM

This month, we have Halloween to look forward to! It is the one occassion where we can really become a character we favour. I like to completely impersonate someone. Whether it was Harley Quinn from DC Comics or Leeloo from The Fifth Element, I would take on the role entirely. So stay clear of the typical costumes and not only dress as someone you love but be that person. Just for that one night. Because you can! Enjoy!

For far too many years the business of fashion cultivated a reckless and hedonistic attitude. Things changed in the 80s as a reaction to the spread of HIV/AIDS, and since then fashion has devoted much time and energy to awareness campaigns for many causes. Perhaps the highest profile today is for the fight against breast cancer. Fashion alone won’t cure breast cancer, but it can cure ignorance. This month we’re playing our small part in achieving this important goal.

CHADI MOUFIED

NOUF AL-HAJRI

As a designer for a luxury lifestyle magazine, I am constantly exposed to high end material. It is very humbling to see that the most prestigious brands support charities, causes and for this month, Breast Cancer Awareness. The world of fashion does not overlook this important month, neither should we! I hope that everyone takes action, not only for this month. Constantly educating yourself about your health and of those around you is incredibly important. Stay aware and be safe!

Every woman needs to know the facts. And the fact is, when it comes to breast cancer, every woman is at risk. When I count the people who inspired me throughout my life, only female names pop out. No offence to men, but women do things better; especially working women. Every thing I owe in this life I owe to women, starting from my mother, my sisters who continuously inpire me every single day, my boss who counts on me even when I have doubts in myself. To all the woman of the world, do your checkup, keep on fighting, keep on inspiring.

THETALK / October / 2013

The Venezuelan aristocrat, Carolina Herrera,

has been sharing her exceptional personal style through the fashion market since 1981, when her friend Diana Vreeland, previous Editor-InChief of Vogue, encouraged her to start her own fashion line based on her outstanding natural flair for fashion and after being entered into the prestigious ‘International Best Dressed List’ hall of fame in 1980. She first appeared on the ‘International Best Dressed List’ in 1972, and was a top fixture every year after. Always impeccably dressed, Herrera has a refined elegance that she credits to her grandmother. Her grandmother took her to her first fashion show at the age of thirteen; the first of many. Besides attending fashion shows and travelling the world Carolina Herrera spent much of her time among royals, musicians and artists such as Mick Jagger and Andy Warhol; highly reputable among them as fashion elite. Her success resonates through the fashion industry, known that wearing her clothing a woman is immediately enhanced as a classy, cosmopolitan character. This is most evident in her innovative take on the classic shirt dress; a must-have to all those whom are conscious of clothing. Herrera has achieved supremacy on the runway, down wedding aisles, red carpets and in the pages of fashion magazines. Once she established her ready to wear and bridal collections, Carolina Herrera expanded with successful fragrances for both men and women. Having collections of ready to wear and lifestyle sportswear for men, women and children, she has been hailed “Fashions First Lady”. Over the years she has collected a number of fashion’s highest accolades as well as a star-studded client list and non-fashion related accolades such as being a Goodwill Ambassador and facilitator for IIMSAM. This season, Carolina Herrera has introduced the new collection for CH Carolina Herrera, The

Gaspar Bag. For this collection, Carolina found inspiration from Gaspar, her beloved poodle. Gaspar has already established his role as the loyal companion and fixture at the atelier. Even New York’s legendary Bergdorf Goodman designed their famous windows in a nod to Carolina Herrera and her dog that is always seen by her side or in her arms. The collection comprises of the most chic and versatile of bags, the tote! Available in leather, suede and fur; the bags are effortlessly stylish. There are special editions that feature frayed trim embellishments. The Gaspar clutch transitions perfectly from day to evening and includes gold studs and leather fringes. Within both the totes and the clutches, Gaspar is celebrated further with a rendering of his paw prints at the bottom of the bags. WWW.THETALK-ONLINE.COM

This is not the first time that Carolina Herrera playfully features her poodle in her designs. She includes a one-of-a-kind signature print in each collection. Last year it was in the form of Gaspar print dresses. Beautifully incorporated, the poodle was printed in bright white against royal blue on silk charmeuse. Once again, Carolina Herrera has brought beauty, refinement, class and effortless style to her following. The different variations of The Gaspar Bag make for many new wardrobe staples and exquisite statements for the season!

Special hearts interview

Special hearts Khalid Alhamad In this interview we get to feature people with great initiatives and projects for the benefit of society. For this month I had the pleasure of conversing with the inspirational Khalid Alhamad, the initiator of Hadath Alarth Festival. His life is an infusion of cultures; he is a graduate of arts, pursuing photography in Dubai and Paris, taught art in Thailand to Buddist monks, went on to Porto Rica to learn Spanish, He currently works in theOffice of foreign cultural relations at the National Council for the Culture, art and literature.

20

THETALK / October / 2013

Tell me about your initiative and the idea behind it?

Hadath Alarth is an annual festival organized by the National Council for the Culture, art and literature. It is more like an awareness media for environmental issues through art and we strive to make it unique different and memorable. We started it last year for VIPs and it was a huge success and we want to make it even bigger and better this year to include more local artists. It is an experience that will leave you thinking twice about the environment and the need to conserve and protect it. What is the story behind the name and logo? It started with the idea and it was called Earth event and then we felt that we wanted to have that Arabic feel to it since we are in Kuwait and wanted to ground it a bit to reflect who we are. We created a new identity with the Arabic name and using it with English letters captures attention more and gives it the unique flavor. What inspired you to start this initiative? I was sitting with my friend Dominique Malarde, a French artist, and we were thinking of issues we care about and the environment is something we both care about. We thought that we can do something is raising awareness of how important it is to care for the environment. And that is how we came up with the concept of having an art show with different media of arts to communicate how we feel and translate them through art. We wanted to engage the audience with something that is different and out of the usual. The idea is to make it different and memorable. Did you have any obstacles in achieving your goal? I work in the government sector and sometime things take time to process outside of the council. Also, when you have a new concept it is

sometimes difficult to get people to understand your vision and you might get some resistance. However, I had it easy than most because our director Engineer Ali AlYouha was very supportive and took it on and made sure it is done and he followed up on this initiative.

a motivation and sense of accomplishments and your drive is gaining that experience and knowledge.

What distinguished you for success?

Write it down. We all have ideas, but it has to be written down, to be done. If it is less than 30 pages don’t bother. When you write it down then you can evaluate it and communicate it better and then judge if it is good or bad.

We had great support from the UNDP and the French cultural office and Spread the Passion volunteers. The success was from the team that I worked with within the national council. It is a collective work and that what is behind every successful venture. In terms of idea we depended on things that are different and the element of surprise. From A to Z everything we looked at and asked, “well is it different?” and that was the main philosophy of our work and we are going with it for next year and we will add, “is it bizarre enough?” What skills you found most useful for work? I am not a good speaker but when I get a pen and paper and clarify my vision then I can communicate that and incorporate the ideas of other members of the team and I think this key to bringing everyone together and focused on the same target. On a bad day what would you say to yourself for motivation to keep on going? It will be over soon. Do you believe all dreams come true? No I think you make them happen. It takes a lot of luck and a lot of hard work. What do you think of volunteer work?

What is your tip for people wanting to start their own initiative?

Last word or wish? Our event will be held on 22nd and 23rd April 2014 and we want to make it huge and an event that people would associate with Kuwait. We have no limits of how bi that we want to take this. It is basically as far as our imagination goes. We are looking for artists of all kind to join and be part of this festival. I wish people can and find their way to start more initiatives and live to their passion. You can follow this great festival on instagram @hadathalarth or you can contact them on hadathalarth@gmail.com’ This interview was written by Fatemah Almosawi founder of Spread the Passion, an not for profit organization with the main aim of spreading awareness about the value of volunteer work under the slogan “Make giving part of your living” by connecting volunteers to volunteering opportunities. To find out more, follow @spreadpassion on instagram and twitter. If you have an initiative that you want to be featured please contact me via email: fate@spreadthepassion.org

It is so important. It is a way of developing ones mind and skills especially the volunteers who really get involved. When you do something for yourself and not a salary, it has a different feel and energy and opens up your creativity. It gives WWW.THETALK-ONLINE.COM

setting the chocolate trend

T

“Chocolate does not make you fat! I am living proof of that”

ell us about the shop! Mainly it is a chocolate shop with everything related to chocolate, such as chocolate truffles, trifles, brownies, chocolate covered strawberries and more. What made you so passionate about chocolate? The passion was inspired by being a chocoholic. Since I was a kid, I would have my chocolate bars and mix them together or layer them before I eat them because as much as I loved chocolate, I wanted interesting textures and flavours. I had to have that incredible bite, not the same one delivered in a basic bar you can buy in a shop.

I remember as a child when everyone was role playing to be a doctor or whatever it may be, I was always role playing by baking. I would pretend I had my own TV show where I was the chef. I would make everything like cakes, brownies, trifles. But when I was too young to use an actual oven I would make things like mousses. I would always make the desserts for family gatherings. Did you grow up wanting to pursue it as a career? My mother always encouraged a business based career so I grew up working in the field of business but would always continue to bake. How did the business aspect of making chocolates begin? The idea of selling was when the demand was very high. Friends would ask to buy large amounts saying it would be too much for them to ask for me to make and give for free. I continued refusing until my brother in-law came to me with orders and said “You have orders, I set prices, and now you have to make them” So he made me pursue it as a business. My youngest child was about a year old at the time but at some point when he was three it was too much for me to make orders at home and be at my best at my full time job at NBK and give my family the attention they needed as well as balancing being a wife and mother and friend and still maintaining control of every aspect. So I stopped taking orders for a while. Since I was still baking at home for myself and the family I would bake based on the Paleo Diet. *Her husband is Fawaz Al-Qanae, the flagger and self proclaimed fitness freak we interviewed for our July/August issue. How does the chocolate fit into the Paleo Diet? It doesn’t. I have tasting that is mandatory for work, so I allow that to be my indulgence but otherwise I do eat healthy and follow Paleo,

28

THETALK / October / 2013

although my husband is strict on the diet so he would call me a clean eater, not Paleo. *She giggles* How is your business partner involved in the store? My partner in the business is my best friend; Sama Basil Hassan. She keeps everything in check, she keeps me sane. She handles everything to do with the business side while I focus on the chocolate and production of them. I can sit for hours experimenting with mixes and time would fly, I would be having fun and not notice the time. She is much better at time management. We are opposites in that my weaknesses are her strengths. *At this point in the interview a tray of chocolates hit the table and we are sidetracked as we gaze at the pretty little bites that hold the most incredible combinations of flavor. From caramel, toffee caramel, cookie dough,

toffee, nutella, dark chocolate mint, galaxy, dark chocolate with wafer, hazelnut, oreo, toffee pecan, dark chocolate with cranberry, to kinder, kitkat and peanut butter… We were in chocolate heaven.

be more beautiful and classy. We have the chocolates on display ready on the spot and we have customization when ordering. Our clients choose us for their precious occasions and we are honoured to be part of them time after time.

Our last vacation was in France and I had to stop at every chocolate shop. It was like art.

Have you had professional training?

Chocolatiers focus a lot on the presentation which is definitely important but I like to focus on each piece giving you a full and satisfying fix of chocolate without making you feel heavy and guilty. Sometimes I would eat a piece of chocolate and it would be similar to plenty I have had before and it isn’t satisfying and you end up feeling guilty that the calories consumed are so familiar. I need it to be so special that you need to have it again and each time is another moment of bliss that is worth it. Why the name Absolute? Back in 2009 I was researching names and it was the name that stuck. It seemed to be very complete in describing what the chocolates provide; absolute chocolate, absolute satisfaction. How has the brand changed from when it was a home business to the store? When it was a home business the design was more fun but opening a store I wanted it to

Originally I was self taught, I have been constantly doing research and have had some courses in chocolatiering abroad. It is a life time journey and I plan to continue developing new techniques. *We don’t see a need for any training. Laila has produced the most incredible chocolates we have tasted. They truly are absolute gems of delight. Are your children involved in the process of making the chocolates? My nine year old daughter is really helpful in terms of ideas and recipes. She doesn’t like getting involved in the kitchen but she loves to come up with different combinations which have been great. Children can be so creative and smart. She wouldn’t put on gloves and a hairnet but my five year old son on the other hand would! He has always loved it. Even if it is something as simple as packaging, he would really enjoy it and once he is done with one task he would quickly ask what is next! Since he could comprehend the concept of a profession

he had decided he wanted to become a chef. Do you have an example of a combination your daughter suggested? One that I can think of off the top of my head is the mint dark chocolate, I personally don’t like that combination but the idea was genius so I went ahead making mixes and trying to play with the flavours and textures until it was Lujain approved. *The mint dark chocolate was actually a favourite of ours. The world of chocolate is so big so I love to listen to her ideas that seem so simple and I wouldn’t have thought of the combination until she mentioned it. How do you balance it all? I balance with a lot of great help and support. You have to make sacrifices and choose your priorities carefully. I won’t spend time at the salon that I would rather spend with my family. I maintain myself as simply as I can so that I can focus on my husband, my kids and what matters most in life. Do you have plans to expand on the business? The store is just the beginning. It is a lifelong journey and I want to take it as far as I can. I don’t see an end goal. WWW.THETALK-ONLINE.COM

EMPORIO ARMANI WOMAN AUTUMN/WINTER 2013-2014 KAJAL MOOD Kajal as range of colours, from soft creams and pinks to dark shades and mineral hues. Its simplicity and clean lines are enhanced by contrasting accessories, used playfully, which evoke contemporary culture and unpredictable aesthetics and different eras. SHAPES The collection offers very feminine shapes – sometimes long, with sculptural forms, where the surprising use of rough-cut neoprene renders the clothing extremely modern. Double-breasted coats emphasize new proportions. New lengths cover the knee or reach the ankle, the tone lightened by the soft gleam of a bare leg. Gauzed mohair makes for soft, large sweaters, and sweaters that are full-bodied, as if made of fur, are paired with trousers, Bermuda shorts and organzajackets. ACCESSORIES Unexpected lace-up men’s shoes with a neoprene vamp and moccasins with transparent PVC sides or a vamp embellished with large coloured crystals play an important role in the collection. Playful bowler hats pair with bright, enormous yet lightweight Jaipur-style earrings with appliquéd gems on a neoprene background – a combination also visible in the necklace that transforms a piece of sumptuous oriental jewellery into an example of great modern design.

RALPH LAUREN LAUNCHES PINK PONY IN THE MIDDLE EAST Pink Pony is Ralph Lauren’s worldwide initiative in the fight against cancer. Its mission is to reduce disparities in cancer care in medically underserved communities, ensuring that treatment is available at an earlier, more curable stage. MR. LAUREN’S CHARITY HISTORY AND THE PINK PONY CAMPAIGN Mr. Lauren is long recognized for his early leadership in the fight against breast cancer. More than 20 years ago, he made a personal and corporate commitment to finding a cure for this disease. He helped establish the Nina Hyde Center for Breast Cancer Research at Georgetown University Medical Center, and designed the first “target” logo for the Council of Fashion Designers of America’s successful “Fashion Targets Breast Cancer” campaign for international awareness. Pink Pony launched on September 15, 2000 at the Ralph Lauren Spring 2001 Collection Fashion Show when models were sent down the runway for their final walk wearing Pink Pony shirts. This launch coincided with a gift from the Ralph Lauren Corporation to establish the Ralph Lauren Center for Cancer Care and Prevention, a hospital-based cancer treatment facility in Harlem that provides comprehensive education, screening and diagnostic services for breast and other cancers, tailored to meet the specific needs of the Harlem community. Beginning in October, Pink Pony products with the classic pink icon will be available in Ralph Lauren stores across the UAE. Contributions generated by the sale of Pink Pony products go to programs dedicated to reducing disparities in cancer treatment and increasing access to quality care. Twenty-five percent of the sales from Pink Pony products are directed to raise funds for the Pink Caravan - the Pan-UAE breast cancer awareness trek, brainchild of the ‘Friends of Cancer Patients’ Patients charitable society.

BESTIARIO COLLECTION Carrera y Carrera has created two extraordinary pieces inspired by the sinuous snake. Basel 2013. 2013, the Year of the Snake, brings new designs full of creativity and character. The powerful symbolism and sinuous lines of this animal endow these spectacular pieces with a strong personality made for lovers of a goldsmith’s art. Each year, Carrera y Carrera adds exceptional new pieces to its successful Bestiario Collection, a tribute to the sculptural origins of the international Spanish jewelry brand. The Serpiente (Snake) bracelet is born of the duality symbolic of this animal that leaves no one indifferent, an allegory of the confrontation of opposing feelings – the worldly and the mundane, the sacred and the profane. When viewed in detail, this piece tells a different story than at first glance. The harmony of the shapes transforms into a battle between two completely different snakes. A line of white diamonds runs along the body of one snake, while its rival’s back is covered with brown diamonds that serve to distinguish the two struggling bodies. Hidden inside both snakes and directly in contact with the wearer’s skin are two rubies placed at heart level, symbolizing the animals’ strength and fortitude.

Setting the jewelry trend

Nestled at the entrance of Al-Tilal Complex, Qirdala sets the perfect atmosphere for their exclusive jewelry. The eclectic, cleancut interior mixes contemporary style with ultimate sophistication. The meaning of the word “Qirdala” is the ancient Najdi term for an intricate, hefty gold necklace. This holds true to the brand Apriati, the line they currently carry, brought to us straight from Greece. Apriati is the ancient Greek word meaning strong desire for having beautiful possessions. The brand has set a new precedent for jewelry. Luxury can now be worn casually and comfortably without compromise. 38

THETALK / October / 2013

It all began back in 1996 with the brand’s famous seven cord bracelets. “The Apriati 7 Cords bracelets are based on the magical number 7. They are inspired by the dynamic and the symbolism that the number 7 means to all the nations and cultures on Earth. 7 the symbol of perfection, excellence, completeness and blessing. 7 the symbol associated with conflicting values. the 7 virtues and the 7 deadly sins. 7 the symbol connected to the 7 mysteries and the 7 wonders of the world. With the 7 ancient sages of humanity, the 7 colours of the rainbow, the 7 sounds of music and the 7 days of the week.” - as described by the

brand. All the cords are made from the same material, available in a variety of colours and combinations of metals and charms. The clasps give so much character to the pieces and add a refined edge. The cord bracelets are resized to your liking within minutes once chosen. The beauty of Apriati is in stacking the bracelets, necklaces and rings to create a unique and personalized combination. Although the pristine elegance of Apriati appears to be delicate, the jewelry is actually far from it. They are completely durable, having accents of silver, rose gold and 18 carat

yellow gold allows resistance to any exposure, meaning once worn they can stay on! In fact, the cords seem to take shape and have an added richness the more they are worn. Dhari Al-Nafisi, the owner of Qirdala, proves the permanence of the cords with his own collection of Apriati arm candy, having stacked many on his wrists which he has worn for over a year without removing them. One of the cords he models is in the famous grey colour Apriati offers. We loved the colour when we noticed it on display, we loved it even more once we tried it on, but seeing the grey coloured cord on Dhari, having been worn over time, the colour is simply unreal. Besides the cord bracelets, Qirdala carries many other exclusive Apriati pieces. The Bond of Love is an absolute dream. A very thin, high clarity 18 carat gold bracelet that twists itself into place is something we have never seen before. There are also the stackable angel wings rings that include a single brilliant (diamond) that also falls under the more delicate category for everyday wear. As for the pieces that make big statements, you will find many that come with the incredibly rare South Sea Tahitian pearl. Or if preferred, they also have cultured pearls. The Dancer (ring) incorporates these pearls within its

superior design along with its matching earrings. They have innovative hoop earrings that can be worn as bracelets and a necklace that has been designed and made especially for Kuwait. We were blown away by the pieces that are blackened by having been plated with platinum; this gives the gold a stunning distinction. They also have pieces that include diamonds that are not anchored. Giving the diamonds movement allows the VS fine cut stones to shine even brighter and adds an extraordinary quality that is unmatchable. Prices vary drastically from the incredibly affordable to the exceedingly expensive; making it a one stop shop for buying simple gifts, special gifts and for absolute splurges. From the jewelry that when worn leaves you feeling like a Greek Goddess or to the statement pieces that make you feel like a Greek warrior, you are guaranteed to attain excellence! THETALK / October / 2013

Master Perfumer for Peony & Blush Suede Q & A with Christine Nagel Peonies in voluptuous bloom, exquisitely fragile. Flirtatious with the juicy bite of red apple and the opulence of jasmine, rose and gillyflower. Mingling with the sensuality of soft, blush suede. Luxurious and seductive. How did you feel when Jo Malone London asked you to create a scent working with the peony flower and the idea of leather? The peony is such a delicate, beautiful flower, so widely adored for its romantic and blousy appeal. Reminiscent of grand English gardens bursting with these elegant pink blooms. I was immediately interested in thinking about how its subtle fragrance might blend with the textures of fabric and leather. What was the inspiration behind Peony & Blush Suede and how did it develop? For me this fragrance captures the connection between the craft of fragrance and couture fashion. I wanted to capture the charm of the English ballroom in the mid-20th century. The heady glamour of the Cecil Beaton era. Women elegant in couture, with peonies brought in from the great country estates, the gossip and moodiness as the night unfolds. We wanted a fragrance that embraced both the floral notes and atmospheric texture of this scene. I chose to work with texture, to bring something unexpected – suede is not only surprising but has a muscularity that acts as the perfect complement to the peony flower. What was your starting point as you embarked on creating the blend?

There are so many varieties of peony, and so many stages the flower takes; the tight bud which gently unfolds as the petals fall softly from the stem. I had to choose which facets of this extraordinary flower I wanted to transcribe in the fragrance. Additional layers are created with the sensuality of rose honey, the sophistication of jasmine and the spice of gillyflower. How would you describe Peony & Blush Suede as the fragrance unfolds? The fragrance starts with the crisp bite of the juicy apple, in combination with the fresh almond giving a softness. After that comes the floral heart, where the peony takes centre stage. The intriguing aspect of this fragrance is the duality of the enveloping feminine floral and the muscle of the textured suede. The fragrance is a matter of sensation; you have to feel it, just as you feel a piece of fabric in your hands. Suede is an unexpected idea. What does this facet bring to the fragrance? The suede note brings sensuality, warmth and texture, and adds a certain suppleness. It’s very unusual. Which other Jo Malone™ Colognes can be layered with Peony & Blush Suede to create a bespoke scent and to what effect? I love to combine this with Saffron, from the Cologne Intense collection. An unusual choice but it works very well, giving an opulent and striking combination – the mix of a luxurious floral with a vivid spice. Or for a different effect you may choose to layer with English Pear & Freesia creating an exquisitely juicy floral with a sensuous mellow touch. WWW.THETALK-ONLINE.COM

etsey Johnson brings her fabrics to life with her eccentric combinations, bright colours, and unique style, but more importantly, it’s her passion and originality that has made her the fashion icon we love. Maintaining her line of clothes and accessories for over 50 years despite health, financial and emotional obstacles, she has not only left her mark on the fashion hall of fame, but has also made her an advocate for cancer. Johnson was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2000 after a mammogram appointment was made because of a chance malfunction with one of her cosmetic breast implants. Although this time of her life caused her line to derail, her own style persevered as she continued to overaccessorize and explore her vivacious closet. Due to the early detection, radiation therapy commenced and fortunately, she was able to beat cancer. Although she kept the cancer a secret for a long time, the proud survivor has frequently given talks and interviews about her battle and has held in-store parties, selling themed garments to promote awareness and funding. The profits of her breast cancer clothing products are donated to the hospital in which she was treated, the Iris Cantor Women’s Health Center. Aside from her health issues, Betsey Johnson also suffered bankruptcy in 2008 as a result of the financial crises. However, with the combination of her perseverance, a reality TV show and the help of Steve Madden, Johnson was able to shake off the financial weight and come out on top. Although Madden took on stake ownership, Betsey remained as creative director and has continued to host fun and zesty fashion shows, which she finishes as always, with a cartwheel and smile at the end of the runway. The realty tv show XOX Betsey, centres on the everyday life of Betsey and her daughter Lulu as they face their emotional and financial ups and downs. The show exposes their rollercoaster mother-daughter relationship as well as their professional and creative processes. Unlike other reality shows, the Johnson women face relatable hurdles with resoluteness rather than petty tantrums, offering their fans more admiral qualities.

accessories and shoes are loved by women of all ages. When spotted on the street, Betsey Johnson’s style puts smiles on faces as she boldly struts in florescent tutus and bright red lipstick. In fact, it is nearly impossible to find a picture of Betsey without her own cheek-to-cheek smile. Her energy is both contagious and endearing. The lively 70 year-old embodies the concept of being as young as you feel, a trademark that is evident in her style. Her line now caters mostly to older women who like to feel younger, but her

At 29, Betsey Johnson was the youngest designer to be awarded the prestigious Coty Fashion Critics Award, having pioneered trends in the 60s. She also won the Timeless Talent award in 2009 and the Honour of Lifetime Achievement in Fashion among others. Talent interview

THE OVERT OPPORTUNIST Mohammad Benessa

60

THETALK / October / 2013

We were able to have a rare one-on-one

with Mohammad to find out more about this supreme character who turns out to have the ability to become many characters. From a restaurateur to a self-proclaimed opportunist and to most interestingly, an actor! He is a rising star in Kuwait who has established himself through his successful restaurants along with his ability to turn his passions into conquests whilst still maintaining his humbled charm. How did your professional career begin? Straight out of university I began working in the aviation industry at National Aviation. They handle Kuwait airport and all the operations for British Airways and others. It took me six months of working there to realize that it was not my passion. I am a firm believer that it is essential to feel fully passionate about what it is you commit yourself to doing on a daily basis. I explored my options and when the idea of opening the first bagel shop in Kuwait was suggested I felt it was something I would truly enjoy and began the process of planning. My family and I did all the research and prepared everything but we could not perfect the bagel; even with consultants from D.C. It was clearly not working so we had to change the plan and fast. Within three to four months we switched the location to where 10.Oh8 is now and had the new menu, logo, designs, we went from a completely planned out bagel shop to a completely new concept within those months and had a great new business in our hands.

Although I was furious that there was no outcome of all the hard work put into the bagel shop, I was incredibly appreciative that it turned into something greater that I had more passion for. Tell us more about 10.Oh8! It is a restaurant for those who really enjoy food. We provide great food, combined with

great atmosphere and music. And of course we had to include a cause, so every three to six months we support a different charity to work with. We try to stay local and sometimes they are international charities. We plaster their posters on the inside wall and outside. We raise awareness for the cause. And give a percentage of profits to the charity.

want that. They wanted to walk in and sit down. So we made it a sit down restaurant but needed menus besides the one on the board, so these changed effected my perception on the concept that I initially wanted. Something had to change so my sister Lina came into the picture and recreated everything. Now, I believe in it 100% and it is going exceptionally well.

Were there unexpected problems that you faced?

We also have a spin-off of 10.Oh8 called Just Desserts which is still connected to the central kitchen and is based on delivery and pick-up only. We are on 6alabat and that has gone really well. But we will be opening an individual store soon.

Yes, I did not expect the criticism. I expected it to an extent but not to the level of judgment I received. Everyone voiced their opinion. Whether it was asked for or not, necessary or not, everyone felt the need to express their opinion and it was mostly negative and at the end of the day you cannot make everyone happy especially when each opinion seems to contradict the other. In what way would opinions contradict? For example everyone likes their toast toasted to a different level. They want different sized portions. Something is cooked for ten minutes; they want it for eleven minutes. I would completely understand if it is not edible or not to a high standard, but to be that picky was a bit much. When did you open Haus café? We opened Haus café two years after the launch of 10.Oh8. I have to admit, I was not in love with the concept of Haus as much as I was with 10.Oh8. If you fully believe in the concept with your heart and soul it will be a success. I believed in 10.Oh8. It wasn’t like that with Haus café. I was worried because it was more of a healthier concept. I am a bit of a health freak but wasn’t sure if others would enjoy it. I wasn’t confident that I knew what people in Kuwait wanted. There was a struggle at first, especially when it came to the concept of ordering from the board behind the till, grabbing a number and sitting down at the table. Customers did not

Should we be expecting a new restaurant soon? I work on everything A to Z. I am checking the accounts, the stock, every detail but still people think I don’t have a job because I am not behind a desk. I enjoy it more. We are working on a new concept on something that is in high demand but with a completely unique execution. That is all I can say for now. How did your acting career begin? I always had an interest in acting. I love it, but didn’t exactly plan through that I would actually get as involved in the industry as much as I did. I was in London and decided to get my headshots done. When the photographer sent them to me he also sent a book along with them which was an A to Z about the acting industry. I emailed a few agents from the book to see what would happen out of curiosity but at the same time I wasn’t too bothered by the outcome. I ended up emailing five agents of which three replied, which was surprising since my C.V just had my picture and measurements. So I thought, let me sign with one of the agents that contacted me and see what happens. As soon as I signed with her I was being sent to auditions. I would study during the week and go WWW.THETALK-ONLINE.COM

I had to have the last word. That was embarrassing but a great taste of what I have to expect and prepare for. You did a great job in the music video Wonderboy! How was that experience for you? It was an incredible experience. When it was released in May I was so proud of it I tweeted the link. However the outpouring of judgment that was expressed was shocking. My immediate family loved it. I had positive reactions. But the negative reaction hurt. Especially when you don’t expect it to come from whom it came from. And the wording of the criticism made it seem like I was a felon, a person who was out to do bad and to hurt them. I never meant any of that.

Screen Shots from Debbie Aramide - Wonder Boy Music Video

on casting calls on the weekends. What I learnt about auditions is that the casting directors already know what look they want and apparently I fit the bill for many. From an extra to advertisements to small parts I was trying out for all. It was all unexpected but then again I didn’t know what to expect. I would show up to each audition having no idea what it’s for and what I am meant to do but it was all very exciting to me. I was picking it all up as I went along. There was one audition where I was completely clueless that I listened in to another person’s audition and just answered the assisting director’s questions along the lines of the that person’s audition. I think I stole the part from him, whoops. So you got the part? *He laughs*

62

THETALK / October / 2013

Yes! At the beginning I thought I was auditioning as an extra. After all, you do have to start small. As it turns out it was a speaking role. Keep in mind I have no idea how to act. I never studied it nor have had any experience, it was just a natural ambition I had. I left the audition unsure and again not so bothered by the outcome. I was called for a second call and after that I got the part and a month later we started shooting and it was my first step into the industry and I loved it. Any downfalls when it came to auditioning? There were bad experiences. For example I had an audition for a commercial and I sat for two hours waiting for my turn in this small room that was packed with people. Finally a lady comes out and points at me and says “You!” I stood up “You’re too old, get out!” I yelled “I didn’t want this commercial anyway” –

What was the most unexpected part of the criticism you faced? It was mostly that I had received neither praise nor support for my restaurants from those people but plenty of active reactions when it came to the acting. I do think sometimes that I wish these people would channel that same energy at me to something more productive. Charity work for example! *he smirks* I still want to do what I love, which is acting but I plan to pursue it full on when I have established a strong base for myself. Besides acting, what is another passion you have? I love going to the gym. I am passionate about working out and playing tennis. *Funnily enough his trainer is our September Interviewee; Douglas Leandro!* I teach body combat. I use to teach at Inspire but now I teach at Al Corniche Club. I am very health conscious; I try my best to eat healthily. Although I have to admit when I eat something I am not meant to I end up going all out.

You also seem to travel randomly, since we had to track you down and ended up contacting you while you were in China, is that something you do often?

*His expression made us have to ask… for example?

Yes, travelling is a true passion of mine. I want to experience every culture. When visiting a new place I can walk around and explore forever. China was definitely one of the most interesting experiences I have had. It is a completely different culture. I tried food I wouldn’t have imagined even existed. You have to try new things to know you don’t like them. Some things I definitely didn’t like.

It was one of the most interesting interviews we have conducted. Mohammad has incredible energy and a very expressive nature. His theatrical storytelling and apparent enthusiasm towards life was enjoyable to witness. We really hope we will be seeing him on the silver screens in the near future!

Duck feet. Never again!

Sportswear enters a new phase without renouncing to high-performance technical fabrics and treatments; luxury is expressed through the focus on precious fabrics and the practicality of the clothing.

EMPORIO ARMANI MENSWEAR FALL/WINTER 2013-2014 COLLECTION URBAN TECH IMPRESSIONS A new era. New attitudes and perspectives mark a different way of dressing. Naturally classic, pure Armani, with a severe allure that is highly contemporary. A collection with a strong metropolitan ethos, accentuated by innovative silhouettes and materials that create surprising effects and convey a tangible sense of energy and an impression of privilege and wealth. The Emporio Armani man selects iconic styles from the male wardrobe – overcoat, caban, jacket, turtleneck and tuxedo jacket – but these are re-visited in high-tech materials. The focus is on each single piece in turn, as if it was under a spotlight.

SHAPES A new silhouette. Slim-cut trousers, in wool-jersey or neoprene, accentuate the ample volumes of the outerwear (much of which is constructed from different fabrics on a neoprene-membrane frame) and oversized knitwear in thick yarn. MATERIALS Wool, knitted yarns, leather and even velvet are coated and come with raw edges, or feature, on the inside, a thin membrane to make the fabric stiffer and give them substance. For example, see the classic jacket in laser-cut black nappa leather, where the orange membrane makes it change colours. The knitwear is innovative and luxurious, and is tailored with lapin and tricot stitching, to be worn under a tuxedo. COLOURS Are paired with eternal blue and asphalt grey; the range of khakis covers the spectrum from lighter sandy hues to more intense and darker tones, with hints of yellow or orange. There are touches of emerald green and purply blue. ACCESSORIES Traditional lace-ups feature new lacing and echo the detailing in the clothing. Classic moccasins with a fringe come in velvet and leather. There are ankle boots, and boots in soft calf hair, with unusual detailing. Backpacks with multiple pockets come in sheepskin fur or in laser-cut nappa leather coupled with neoprene. The maxi-clutches are new and unexpected.

The Etonian Englishman Dominic West

THETALK / October / 2013

D

ominic West, best known for his role as Detective Jimmy McNutty from The Wire, stars as Hollywood icon, Richard Burton alongside Helena Bonham Carter in the Burton & Taylor movie this October on BBC4. On top of his developing career on stage and screen, he makes time for charities that is passionate about. Described as ‘smoldering,’ West compliments his clean-cut look with his boyish charm, which we love. The Etonian actor prefers old-fashioned English tailoring, but follows his wife’s guidance as his personal fashion-police. The English born Etonian actor, comes from a large Irish family of seven children, but received most of the attention because of a life threatening blood disease he suffered at the age of three. He claims that this attention might have been one of the factors that kept him on the stage since the age of nine. However, like every actor, he has had his ups and downs, and has even fallen off an eight-foot stage and onto the audience! Regardless, his commitment to acting to standing back up again has paid off, having played professor Higgins in My Fair Lady in theatre, appeared on screen in True Blue, Chicago, Mona Lisa, and The Wire.

Aside from his professional career, Westgoes the extra mile, or rather 335 km for charity. In an effort to raise awareness and support for the Walk with the Wounded charity with Prince Harry, West is currently preparing for a trek to the South Pole with a team of wounded service men and women. Both Prince Harry and Dominic Wests’ teams will race to the pole this November in -40 degrees, aiming to finish on December 16th. West also supports Helen’s Trust, a charity aiming to give patients with incurable diseases the option to live out their last days at home with their families rather than alone in a hospital. He is particularly passionate about this because it helped his mother come home and spend time with her sons and daughters beforepassing away. Unfortunately, many patients do not have this opportunity because of hospital regulations. In order to raise awareness, he performed with Lucy Partham (solo pianist)in an event celebrating the 150th anniversary of Debussy in his hometown in Sheffield. She played the piano and scripted the narrative for West to sing along. At the end of the event, the audience was encouraged to meet and greet them both, and ask questions about their careers and performances. “I intend to lend my support to Helen’s Trust to help generate funds and raise awareness as much as I can over time.” -Dominic West Although he says his troublemaking days are ‘over,’ West still gives his publicist headaches with his inappropriate remarks during interviews, reminding the world that he’s still young at heart. Yet, he endears his fans by matching his adventurous side with his tranquil interests Jane Austen, D.H. Lawrence, Nick Hornby, Edith Warten and other classic English texts. He is the perfect blend of adventurous, calm, rebellious and philanthropic. WWW.THETALK-ONLINE.COM

Setting the car trends

The Ferrari 458 Speciale to debut at Frankfurt Extreme technology for an uncompromising new V8

The 458 Speciale is the latest product of Ferrari’s core philosophy of extreme technological innovation and research which, in this instance, has yielded powertrain, aerodynamics and vehicle dynamics advances that transform the already exceptional 458 Italia into a car genuinely worthy of the “Speciale” moniker. The result is a completely new, uncompromising, streamlined sports car concept. Many of the sophisticated solutions being applied for the very first time to an in-range car in the 458 Speciale, including its advanced active aerodynamics, will become a standard feature of all new Ferraris in the future. Flanked in the Maranello marque’s range by the multi-award-winning 458 Italia and 458 Spider, the new mid-rear-engined V8 berlinetta 70

THETALK / October / 2013

was designed to boost both performance and driving emotion to unprecedented levels, yet simultaneously guarantee smooth, effortless control in all kinds of situations. Having lavished meticulous attention on the power unit that was named “Best Performance Engine” at the International Engine of the Year Awards for two consecutive years, Ferrari has now built its most powerful naturally aspirated V8 ever (605 cv) with an extraordinary specific power output of 135 cv/l , the highest ever achieved by a road-going naturally aspirated engine. Thanks to an equally exceptional weight/power ratio of just 2.13 kg/cv, the 458 Speciale can sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in a mere 3.0” (0-200 km/h in 9.1”) and also clocked a lap time of just 1’23”5 at the Fiorano Circuit.

Aerodynamic requirements guided the work of the Ferrari Styling Centre, which led the project in cooperation with Pininfarina, to sculpt the car’s forms to ensure they were more performanceoriented than ever. The most notable features in this sense are the front and rear movable aerodynamics which balance downforce and cut drag, thus helping make the 458 Speciale the most aerodynamically efficient range production car in Ferrari history (E Index of 1.5) The technology used in the vehicle dynamics subsystems which gives the driver instant confidence and control at high speeds, natural power oversteer management and precise response to commands are further advances in an area in which Ferrari is already a wellestablished leader. One of the most innovative content of the 458

Speciale is the Side Slip angle Control system (SSC) which makes it easier to achieve car control on the limit, thereby greatly improving driving emotions. Thanks to the development of an accurate new algorithm SSC performs instant-to-instant analysis of the car’s side slip, comparing it with the target value and then optimising both torque management (via integration with F1-Trac traction control) and torque distribution between the two wheels (via integration with the E-Diff electronic differential). Part and parcel of the car’s development

included Michelin Pilot Sport Cup2 tyres which were specifically honed for it in an intensive collaboration programme involving, amongst other factors, numerous track test and simulator sessions. Conceived for the 458 Speciale, they boost performance over a single lap in the dry as well as improving performance consistency in subsequent laps. They also allow the car to avail of maximum available grip in the wet.

time and also delivers repeatability of that performance on subsequent laps that is absolutely unprecedented for a car not designed exclusively for track use. The result is that the 458 Speciale has the fastest response time (0.060 s) and highest lateral acceleration (1.33 g) ever achieved by a car in the Prancing Horse range.

The abovementioned technical content has improved the 458 Speciale’s single lap WWW.THETALK-ONLINE.COM

Reverse Signs of Aging No matter what age we may be, we always want to look younger. Youth is associated with health and even in the smallest ways you could look much younger, healthier and happier so this month we are looking at the main points in our lifestyle that can affect the way we age and how to tackle them. The main points to focus on in your life are: l

What you eat

l

How much you move

l

How you respond to stress

l

How much love and intimacy is in your life

Food: Many people make the effort in changing their eating habits with a drastic diet change that causes deprivation and stress, this causes aging. When choosing food to eat, make sure it is healthy but also find ways in making it appealing to your sight and taste buds so that you enjoy it and not feel like it is an obligation. When you eat food that is bad for you, do not feel guilty. Eat right the next meal and move on. Dwelling on eating bad food is worse than the food itself. Movement: We can put too much focus on exercising at the gym but not enough attention to the fact that we may sit for hours without movement which causes stress on the body which in turn causes aging. Go for a walk, stroll or just a stretch every now and then to keep your blood circulating. Keep track of how much you move or rather, the lack of movement to know where you can improve and how you can incorporate movements into simple routines. Stress: It is inevitable that we feel stress on a daily basis. It may be on the smallest scale that we can shrug off and it may be so overpowering that we succumb to it and fall sick. Stress can be channeled into positive energy or it can flow right through you if you allow it to. Last month we covered how you can meditate, which relieves stress. Taking that same method, removing yourself from a stressful environment or situation for even a few minutes can change your outlook and give you a fresher, less stressed, perspective. The more stress you take in the more havoc it can cause in your body and on your overall health which means faster wrinkles, grey hairs and lower levels of energy. Love & Intimacy: This is the most important point which has been proven by the reversal of heart disease. Love is incredibly essential in many aspects of our lives and has a direct link to aging. When you 72

THETALK / October / 2013

love a child, you can feel the child’s youth and glow within you. Take that same example and work it into your lifestyle. Feel the love for the people around you. Keep a strong sense of family, friends and community. When you are feeling down, make an effort to reach out to someone even if it is just for a warm embrace. The exchange of love can fill voids that you were not even aware you had. Reflect on these four points and find ways in incorporating the improvements into your lifestyle. The more you improve on these points the more you will prevent aging and feel the reverse effects. It is really that simple!

Edinburgh, Scotland

Halloween as it is known today, originated from the Celtic festival, Salmain. It stems from the custom of celebrating the end of the harvest season and preparing for the winter. The Gaels believed that on the night of the 31st, the dead would cause chaos on the living, inspiring the tradition of ‘guising’ to protect them by mimicking the dead. As a result of their traditional bonfires to keep the spirits at bay, insects and bats were drawn in inspiring the Halloween decorations 76

of bats and spiders. The customs evolved againduring the 5th to the 16th century as medieval cruelty and infamous murders inspired legends of ghosts lurking in castles seeking revenge. Now, Scotland is one of the top Halloween destinations as parades, festivals and castle tours attract history buffs and legend seekers around the world. Two of the most famous visited events are the Samhuinn parade and the castle tours in Edinburgh.

Transylvania, Romania Halloween features a handful of classic ghouls including the witch, the ghost, the mummy, the demon, and the vampire. The most iconic of the vampires would undoubtedly be Dracula, made famous by Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel. In Transylvania, tourists pour in from around the world to see Bran Castle, the once home of the inspiration from the novel, Vlad the Impaler. The region unites in celebration of this holiday with a several tour companies offering 1 to 7 day itineraries involving dinners and parties in the castles as well as guided excursions into the towers, dungeons and grounds where you can learn about the myths and facts about Vlad. Even though it is not necessarily a scary Halloween hotspot, it is definitely eerie.

Magique Halloween Circus, Sydney, Australia While westernized countries explore more of Halloween customs such as telling ghost stories, trick or treating and bobbing for apples, Australia’s Sydney narrows their focus to the costumes and a party. In fact, at Sydney’s Magique Halloween Circus the tradition of ‘guising’ is compulsory if you want to experience the most eccentric party and stand a chance to win the best costume award. As implied from the name, the event is, after all, a circus; showcasing s a variety of performers including contortionists, Illusionists, fire breathers and burlesque dancers and more! This event is ideal if you like to dance, meet people and being amazed, as the circus performers join forces with famous Electro and House DJs and RnB artists. The Magique’s Halloween Circus will be celebrating their 5th anniversary of hosting the biggest Halloween event in Sydney this year, both promising an exciting tribute to the anniversary as well suggesting that Halloween can be celebrated in traditional and modern ways without loosing its roots.

Day of the Dead Mexico

This 3000-year-old Mexican tradition, dia de los muertos, infused with Aztec, pre-Columbian and Christian beliefs, is a three-day holiday beginning October 31st to November 2nd. On these days, spirits are not feared but welcomed to a colourful and vibrant feast. Families and friends remember and honour their lost loved onesaround homemade altars ornamented with images of the departed, brightly coloured flowers, pan de muerto, candles, and more. The first day is dedicated to preparing for the holiday; the second day pays tribute to children and the third to adults. Although it is not Halloween in 80

If you are interested in unearthing the more uncanny elements of the day of the dead, take a trip to the Mayan town of Pomuch where the citizens dig up the bones of their dead relatives to give them a cleanse them for the coming year. This year will be even more fantastic as it celebrates the 100th anniversary of the death of artist Jose Guadelupe Posada (created the iconic ‘La Caterina,’ of day of the dead) .

CHANEL Boutique Opens in Kuwait at Prestige Mall, The Avenues CHANEL reinforces its presence in Kuwait with the opening of a second boutique, in Prestige Mall, The Avenues. Like the other CHANEL boutiques around the world, this boutique was designed by the celebrated New York based architect Peter Marino. Throughout, it recalls Mademoiselle Chanel’s declaration that “The most beautiful things are the simplest.” Behind the impactful marble façade, the world of CHANEL opens out over two floors and 505m² featuring the icons of the House perpetually reinterpreted by Karl Lagerfeld in his six Ready-to-Wear and accessories collections for the House each year. Pure lines are explored in a palette of the emblematic colours of the House, with white and beige marble floors and black carbon fiber walls punctuated by artworks by Peter Dayton and Robert Greene, as well as a coffee table by Ingrit Donat. On the ground floor, clients are greeted by two spaces dedicated to accessories, as well as the shoe area which features a chandelier from Goossens, and a room dedicated to all the ranges of CHANEL watches,

headlined by the Première and J12, displayed alongside the Ultra collection of fine jewellery. A staircase leads to the first floor, where the refinement and cosiness of the private apartment of Mademoiselle Chanel at 31 Rue Cambon in Paris is recreated in two Ready-to-Wear spaces where clients are welcomed by comfortable tweed sofas and private fitting rooms. Adjoining this area, an intimate room is devoted to the most precious accessories. Luxury, elegance and modernity, the three elements that represent the very essence of the House, are brought together with perfect harmony at CHANEL’s boutique at Prestige Mall, The Avenues.

ROLLS-ROYCE WRAITH MAKES ITS Kuwait DEBUT The Rolls-Royce Wraith, the most powerful and dynamic Rolls-Royce in history, made its eagerly-anticipated debut here in Kuwait yesterday at Ali Alghanim & Sons Automotive, the sole dealer of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars in Kuwait. With an elegant fastback design and the ability to accelerate from 0-100 km/hr in just 4.6 seconds, the 624 bhp-model from the world’s pinnacle super-luxury marque presents a unique character defined by power, style and drama, and a hint of noir, while maintaining the hallmark Rolls-Royce attributes of luxury, refinement and hand-craftsmanship. “Today we launch the ultimate gentlemen’s gran turismo, a car that embodies the spirit of Charles Stewart Rolls.” commented Geoffrey Briscoe, Regional Director, Middle East, Africa and Latin America, RollsRoyce Motor Cars. “The most powerful Rolls-Royce in history, Wraith promises the sense of adventure and speed that drove our founding forefather. But of course, Wraith’s starting point is luxury, refinement and quality, traits that remain as important to Rolls-Royce customers today as they were more than a century ago.” 82

THETALK / October / 2013

“Sir Henry Royce, one of the founding fathers of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, said: “Take the best that exists and make it better: when it does not exist, design it.” These words resonate well with Wraith, because it is the most powerful Rolls-Royce ever; the most dynamic Rolls-Royce with the boldest styling. However it is every inch a refined and luxurious model. But there is also an element of the noir, a sense that this is an edgier car than Ghost, or any other car in the Rolls-Royce line-up,” Mr. Briscoe added.

G-STAR AUTUMN/WINTER COLLECTION 2013 MEN

G-STAR FINDS ULTIMATE BLUE IN RAW MAZARINE Inspired by Toile de Chine, a fabric that pre-dates denim, RAW Mazarine is the ultimate double dyed blue of G-Star. The key colour can be found throughout the entire G-Star collection. Of the RAW Mazarine collection both the warp and the weft of the fabric are indigo double dyed. Wear it dark on dark for a sophisticated denim look. The women’s range features the Hunter 5620 Overcoat in Fray Moleskin, a crisp and robust looking 3x1 left hand twill in this distinct blue with a soft handfeel. This deep red casted indigo combines a slightly lighter blue weft and a darker warp. The RAW Radar Jacket with bellowed pockets is made from the same fabric. In addition the contemporary 3301 Low Tapered comes in Mazarine RAW, a red listing quality with a herringbone construction. It has a deeply saturated blue black base with a weft that is black yarn dyed and the warp is indigo with sulphur black on top.

THIS SEASON’S MEN LOOK BY G-STAR For winter 2013, the G-Star look for men features a broad range of styles in different shades of intense dark indigo. Denim highlight is the Type C denim with its modern loose fit. This 3D denim is partly inspired by late 1940s US Servicemen, whose pants had a tapered fit and worn-in knees.

Key characteristics of the Type C denim are the bowleg silhouette celebrating the 3D denim look - and the extremely loose top block with a low crotch construction. Its oversized front and back pockets take inspiration from those of vintage workwear pants, stretched by the carrying of heavy tools.

Just Cavalli Fall/Winter 2013-2014 The Just Cavalli Fall/Winter 2013-2014 collection describes an exotic and exciting journey which appears to hover between ancient and contemporary times: the lightness of the fabrics and the magnificence of the traditional Asian decorative elements are embedded in the prints and highlighted in the textiles. The silk jumpsuits’ flowing silhouette enhances the femininity of the female body by gliding almost imperceptibly along the skin, and superslim pants are combined with matching or contrasting printed outerwear. The dresses are short and sensual, paired with deconstructed jackets; or long and fitted, completed by fur micro vests. The knitwear plays with volumes, often in dégradé jacquard animal print, occasionally embellished by quilted silk sleeves, or high-neck and sleeveless in soft angora wool. The prints, which represent the most distinctive and iconic Cavalli element, are inspired by the traditional Bhutanese culture and garments. Opulent metallic sequin embroideries are placed on pants and jackets and are also used to decorate the denim. The colours are vibrant and intense: blue, orange, yellow, red and jade. 84

THETALK / October / 2013

Boots with a red cylinder heel are created in python leather and jaguar printed pony or in leather combined with goatskin. Velvet open-toe ankle-boots, with stylized flame print soles and the same red heel, are decorated with small buttons. The wraparound style acetate sunglasses come in bright colors with mirrored lenses. Some outfits present the refined necklaces created with silk threads and jade ornaments, worn by the Bhutanese aristocracy and called “tears of the gods”.

New Look AW13 Collection Preview Event in Dubai We were invited once again to preview the new collection from one of our favourite high street brands, New Look. We had the pleasure of experiencing firsthand the new designs with a walk-through explaining the inspiration behind the three main lines for this Autumn/Winter collection. The first collection, named Baboushka, is heavily inspired by Russian fashion. Rich colours and materials were used to capture a folkish flair and rustic charm. The decadent prints and intricate embroidery give winter statement pieces a new level of luxe. The collection is very rich, colourful and incredibly feminine with a sultry Eastern European edge! The second collection, New Army Model, focuses on sharp lines and silhouettes. The unique simplicity of the structured shapes give the pieces a classic look that is modern, feminine as well as edgy. The colours are neutral as the monochrome is key in allowing a great pop of colour with the scarlet and cobalt accents. We found many of the pieces to be staples for any winter wardrobe. The third collection, Grunge, is very true to its name. Hard-edged embellishments, bold

prints and toght textures are blended to deliver a carefree, confident and effortlessly edgy collection that perfectly captures 90s Grunge. New Look has titillated our fashion minds, as they do each season, with many must-haves for us to mix, match and have plenty of fun with!

Canon Event in Collaboration with MALAAK Designs for Abayas. Canon invited THETALK to Dubai where we stayed at Sheraton at the Mall of Emirates as we awaited the exciting event that took place. We were taken to Lighthouse Studio along with other members of the media from across the gulf. We enjoyed a small reception of mocktails and chocolate covered strawberries where we had the chance to socialize before being welcomed by the lovely Canon team. We were then split into two groups. The first went ahead to have their makeup done and to be styled by MALAAK designs, the UAE based Abaya designer brand. As they prepared, we had a short intensive course on how to use the Canon EOS 100D which was instructed by Farooq Salik; Dubai based Senior Fashion Lifestyle Photographer. The Canon EOS 100D is the smallest and lightest DSLR now in the market! We quickly learnt how to use the camera as well

as how to ‘capture the moment’ and to take the best pictures based on different lightings in the studio. Once we felt fully prepared and confident using the compact DSLR, the first group was ready for their close-ups. We were able to test our abilities with Farooq Salik close by to help us if we needed any further assistance. We found the easy-to-use camera incredibly enjoyable and had an array of shooting modes and filters to experiment with and get creative! Afterwards it was our turn to model the beautiful abayas and turbans by MALAAK, and enjoyed our moment in the spotlight as the other team captured it! The event was a great experience. Perfectly arranged; we felt pampered with the makeup and styling; the delicious canapés, drinks and treats and are still very excited about our new found love of photography; more specifically, our new Canon EOS 100D! 86

Restaurant Review

Elevation Burger The burger industry in Kuwait continues to rise with many independent and chain restaurants opening at a rapid pace. We have many options to choose from, however, Elevation Burger sets itself apart as the only burger chain with 100% USDA-certified organic beef! First established in Virginia, USA; Elevation Burger has devoted customers from the burger lovers to the muscle builders and even to the health conscious. Their meat is cooked with no additional oil, just using the beefs natural fat. This is executed on a griddle that has been created especially for the chain. The clean process allows customers to enjoy the succulent meat with guiltless satisfaction. The 100% grass-fed beef that contains higher levels of Omega-3s is prepared using the Islamic practices to ensure customers receive the freshest in Halal meat. The menu comprises of four burgers that vary based on the number of beef patties, the option of cheese or the vegetable patty. These burgers can be enriched with a range of toppings. Our favourites are the Elevation Sauce and balsamic mustard! The burger patties are held together with potato buns which is slightly sweeter than the average wheat bun. This allows the beef juices to soak in and create a mouth-watering delight to every bite. Besides the four different burgers offered, Elevation Burger also offers no carb options. Either having the beef wrapped in lettuce or stacked to eat with a fork and knife. They also cater to those with a gluten allergy as well as those who are lactose intolerant, guaranteeing gluten-free and lactose-free meals when requested. Their French fries are cut from whole potatoes by order. They are deep fried in heart-healthy olive oil. To fry potatoes in olive oil requires a very specific temperature that the restaurant has perfected. 100

Also on the menu are salads with options of dressings, cookies and a variety of drinks. The main drink to focus on is the shakes. The shakes are hand-scooped made withe real icecream. You can choose either, vanilla, chocolate or coffee ice-cream which is then mixed with your choice of one or two flavours such as organic cheesecake, key lime, oreo cookies, chocolate syrup or fruits. The Elevation Burger restaurants have been designed using sustainable materials as well as recycled products. The chain is very focused on being environmentally friendly, holding its social resposibility not only to the environment but also to the community as a whole. Elevation Burger is located in The Avenues, Hamra Mall, MENUS in Abu Halaifa and opening soon in West Mishref Co-op.

The Silent Wife: A Novel by A.S.A Harrison Jodi and Todd are at a bad place in their marriage. Much is at stake, including the affluent life they lead in their beautiful waterfront condo in Chicago, as she, the killer, and he, the victim, rush haplessly toward the main event. He is a committed cheater. She lives and breathes denial. He exists in dual worlds. She likes to settle scores. He decides to play for keeps. She has nothing left to lose. Told in alternating voices, The Silent Wife is about a marriage in the throes of dissolution, a couple headed for catastrophe, concessions that can’t be made, and promises that won’t be kept. Expertly plotted and reminiscent of Gone Girl and These Things Hidden, The Silent Wife ensnares the reader from page one and does not let go.

High Heat: A Jack Reacher Novella by Lee Child July 1977. Jack Reacher is almost seventeen, and he stops in New York City on the way to visit his brother at West Point. The summer heat is suffocating, the city is bankrupt, and the mad gunman known as Son of Sam is still on the loose. What does a visiting teenager do in the dark? If that visiting teenager is Jack Reacher, the answer is plenty.

The English Girl: A Novel by Daniel Silva The Boy in the Suitcase by Lene Kaaberbol Nina Borg, a Red Cross nurse, wife, and mother of two, is a compulsive do-gooder who can’t say no when someone asks for help—even when she knows better. When her estranged friend Karin leaves her a key to a public locker in the Copenhagen train station, Nina gets suckered into her most dangerous project yet. Inside the locker is a suitcase, and inside the suitcase is a three-yearold boy: naked and drugged, but alive. Is the boy a victim of child trafficking? Can he be turned over to authorities, or will they only return him to whoever sold him? When Karin is discovered brutally murdered, Nina realizes that her life and the boy›s are in jeopardy, too. In an increasingly desperate trek across Denmark, Nina tries to figure out who the boy is, where he belongs, and who exactly is trying to hunt him down.

Daniel Silva delivers another spectacular thriller starring Gabriel Allon, The English Girl. When a beautiful young British woman vanishes on the island of Corsica, a prime minister’s career is threatened with destruction. Allon, the wayward son of Israeli intelligence, is thrust into a game of shadows where nothing is what it seems... and where the only thing more dangerous than his enemies might be the truth…
