EDITOR’S LETTER

As publishers, we often get goodie bags to try different products. It is one of the perks of the jobs that offsets some of the hard work we put in. Last month I received a goodie bag from L’Occitane, and in it was a glass jar with gold flakes. A body oil that leaves your skin shimmering. Interesting, I thought. I applied it the first time and got hooked. Every day, following my morning shower, I would apply it regardless of what I was wearing as it simply had that “feel good” effect. But one day I pulled out an all-white silk top that I was going to wear for the first time and without thinking I put it on over my freshly oiled body. Needless to say the outcome was disastrous. And I started worrying, will the oil ever be removed? Should I throw the top away without even wearing it!? Guess what, when I returned home that evening, I was preparing my top for the laundry and to my amazement, the stains had evaporated by themselves! Trust the French!! By the way, it is an amazing body oil, I highly recommend it. Till my next quirk, Zeina Mokaddam

I never understood the hype of having a wedding. I wasn’t one of those girls that grew up dreaming of that special day. To me, the planning seemed too tedious for just one day. However, after all the research and planning, this issue felt like my own personal wedding scrapbook and I have to give in to the fact that the planning is incredibly enjoyable and I can imagine that the wedding day would feel wonderful as you experience all the planning come to life; just as this issue has! I am now one of those girls.

One thing that will never go out of style is love, and even as the centuries have passed by no one has yet come up with a better reason for getting married.

Once again, the international fashion industry kick starts the wedding season with the awaited New York bridal fashion week in April. As much as we all love shopping, buying a wedding dress can be quite difficult and confusing. That’s why, the talk shares with you the best picks of the bridal runway, from classics to Avant Garde from the likes of Vera Wang, Oscar de La Renta, Christian Lacroix and many more. Wedding cake inspiration

Northampton striker Adebayo Akinfenwa, who at 16st is believed to be the country’s heaviest footballer, enjoyed making his critics eat their words when he scored his first professional hattrick in the win against Accrington. Akinfenwa, a cult figure at the Cobblers due to the size of his shorts as well as his goal tally, is no stranger to chants about his weight. But the London-born striker says the terrace jeers are a motivating factor. “Their fans were giving me some stick a couple of minutes before my first goal so it was nice to shut them up a little bit,” he told the Northampton Chronicle. “It’s a beautiful thing. I want them to talk when they need to talk. I know it’s pure banter and part and parcel of football. When they do that, I

Them Eat Cake!”

“Let Them Eat Cake!”

Royal style

Marie Antoinette is the Queen of desserts. From cakes to macaroons to anything sweet, she knew how to indulge with full on luxury. That is why she is our main inspiration for, let us be honest, the most anticipated part of the wedding after seeing how the bride looks, the cake! If you want to go all out and make an event out of the desserts then the Marie Antoinette theme is a must. Play with pastel colours, mix decadent flavours and have so much variety that your guests will be spoilt for choice. This will need time and planning for the intricate designs to come to life.

Ladur ée

When it comes to macaroons no one does it better than Ladurée. Whether you want to cover your whole cake with these French delicate gems or decorate the dessert table with them or hand them out in their beautiful gift boxes to your guests, they are a staple in dessert luxury.

Floral Flavour

Floral is epic. There is no such thing as too many flowers at a wedding. The more the better, so why not decorate your cake with plenty of your favourites. They could be real, edible or just a few petals here and there. You could also have it in the flavor with a rose water cake. Yum!

Dare to be different

If you prefer to steer away from the norms then have your cake express a very unique part of your personality, whether it is a common interest between you both as a couple, such as your love for French cuisine, have yourselves a very literal ‘cheesecake’ such as the Gourmet Cheese Cake (far left). Or it can be an expression of fashion, a mix of both your favourite colours, or a simple cake with add-ons of memorabilia.

The Classics

Of course, the all time favourites are a white cake with gold or silver accents, with pearls and piping. Take it a step further with ruffled icing, classic baroque designs, ribbons and flowers. The more extravagant you want to go but still keeping it classic, think bigger and play with the size instead of adding too much.

TFK: The Fragrance Kitchen Marlon Di Gregori

As the ambassador of TFK Marlon

Di Gregori truly is the whole package. Not only is he jaw-droppingly gorgeous, he also has incredible charm, class and sophistication. An absolute gentlemen, you will hear him frequently using the words “Shukran” (thank you). “Inshallah”(If God wills). With all that said the trait that we found most dominant in his personality was how genuine he is. In everything he says and does. He is confident about his honesty, answering every question asked in complete detail. When we asked if there is anything he said that he would prefer us not to publish, his reply? “If I said it then it is true, I will not interfere in your writing; that is yours!” Yes, this is the part where you are wondering where this great man came from. Rio Grande do Sul – Brazil! How did you get the job as TFK Ambassador? We all have different stories of how we got here but mine is by far the most unusual. I was found through Facebook *he laughs* I received a message from His Majesty Sheikh Majed Al-Sabah explaining the concept of the store and that lead to emails back and forth until we started making serious decisions. I, along with Fernando, Thiago and Nicholas came to Kuwait in October to meet and discuss everything. We were asked to go back to Brazil and think about it at home before making any final decisions. Within a week we all accepted the offers and began the TFK process. First, Hamad AlSarraf shot our first campaign in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. Then we went to India for our second photo shoot. After which we went to Canada for a month to study English. We came to Kuwait a week before the store opening, completely prepared, and having full knowledge of the fragrances and history.

34

THETALK / May / 2013

Thinking back to a year and a half ago when you accepted the job and then looking at the present time, how were your expectations met? Well the brand is going up much faster than I expected. I am more involved in the marketing which I did not expect but greatly enjoy, it makes you feel much more involved and that makes it a lot more personal. And now that Donald Mcpherson is on board as our photographer and media director, the family is complete. We have a very strong brand and a very strong image. Does it feel odd for you to be working here in Kuwait? I have worked outside of Brazil, in Europe; Germany, Italy and Spain. I never expected to work in the middle-east especially Kuwait. I think everyone was surprised that the offer was coming from here. The need for international models in Kuwait was unheard of. We get invitations from the states from Europe and Asia, which is all normal, but from the middle-east is extremely rare, almost unheard of in Brazil. Comparing Kuwaiti culture and Brazilian, are there any similarities? The two cultures are completely different. Maybe the friendliness, that is about it. It is very comfortable here; people are very nice and friendly, they easily smile. Kuwait is a great new experience. It is a completely different culture. I lived in Italy which is very similar to where I am from, but Kuwait is a whole new different experience for me and I love to learn, so I am happy and I love the food here. What is your favourite food here? Sheikh Majed Al-Sabah’s aunt’s cooking. It is the best! “Mumtaaz” (very good)

How do you spend your free time here? When I am not working I am resting. I work a lot, if it is not in TFK it is working on my home in Brazil. I spend a lot of my free time either with my wife or the TFK guys, we have dinners and barbeques. How did you meet your wife Lillian? I met her in Brazil. She is a business woman. She was working for IT companies in Brazil. Before moving to Kuwait she was the director of HR in a very big company. Very different professional path than mine. How did you both decide to get married? I was having dinner with all the guys and Sheikh Majed Al-Sabah was asking me about Lillian, how our relationship was, where was it going. I told him I would want to marry her but I am currently building a home so maybe after I finish from that expense. He gave me an offer I couldn’t refuse *he smirks! We love The Godfather! He said that if I would get married to her this year, here in Kuwait, he would handle the expenses. I was so surprised. It was an amazing gesture. Very lovely of him. She came here to get to know everyone. She went back to Brazil for two months to prepare everything then came back here two days before the wedding. We had two weddings. One was the traditional Kuwaiti one and the other was the catholic wedding at the church. Where did you go for your honeymoon? For our honeymoon we went to India. We spent two days touring the city of Agra. My wife really wanted to visit the Taj Mahal so we did that. Then we spent three days in Jaipur where we saw many palaces and learnt a lot about the culture, religion and traditions. Then we went to Udaipur, which is the most romantic city in India. There is a huge lake with palaces surrounding it. It was beautiful, unbelievable, a great experience.

Any plans for children in the near future?

Gilberto and Bebel Gilberto.

No, we have a son already. He is a Jandaya Parakeet which is a Brazilian native bird. We love him so much. I love birds in general. They are amazing creatures. Very beautiful and smart. My favourite drink is Chimarrão, which is a Brazilian drink, my son drinks it as well; he loves it just like his father. It has a lot of healthy properties.

What is your favourite activity?

*Telling him about our own experiences of birds, by just saying the colours Marlon would tell us what type of bird and which country they’re from.

Asking me now I would have to say The Unusual Suspects. I really like it, it is so intelligent. Before you ask... my favourite writer is Pablo Neruda. I love his books; he is a writer from Chili. I love all his work.

We have already covered a few favourites now. Favourite animal and drink. Let’s talk favourites!! What is your favourite music?

What is your favourite movie?

*We began talking about books and his knowledge is endless. We tell him our favourite topic is philosophy and he began recommending a list of books. Rounding up the favourites questions; what is your favourite perfume?

What are the future plans for TFK? We will be opening a store in Florence: Italy, Moscow: Russia, London: England and Dubai very soon. TFK opened May 30th of last year; we will be having an event to celebrate our one year anniversary. We will be there with bells on! The beautiful concept of The Fragrance Kitchen with their exceptionally unique scents is enough for us to become devoted customers; however the incredible Ambassadors assisting us with our purchases have turned us into serious fans of the brand!

Photography by Donald McPherson

I love classical music. Beethoven and Mozart of course! When you are at home with friends you can’t listen to classical music, which is something for when you are alone. When I’m with my friends I listen to Brazilian blues such as Tom Jobim, Vinicius De Meraes, Joao

I like racing cars, I have a good knowledge of cars. I love running, but it is a little hard here in Kuwait. I do when I have time and when I can.

I have three favourites. I cannot just choose one. Son of a Rose is one; it is very peppery. Arab Spring is a new one, very nice. The Man From Ipanema is the third. Ipanema is one of the most famous beaches in Brazil. The perfume is a tribute to Rio De Janeiro.

HIS STYLE ICON

Tatessieon Robert Tatessieon

Tête à tête with Ines Di Santo

46

THETALK / May / 2013

Tatessieon

K

nown as the “King of Cufflinks” through his London based brand Tateossian, Robert has set the bar for luxury. Tateossian is for the men and women who have everything. The brand consists of over-the-top accessories in terms of luxury, function and unique design. Including cufflinks with pieces of gold leaf, vintage movements from Swiss watches and usable usbs. Robert Tateossian launched the brand back in 1990. Having been born in Kuwait and living in Beirut, London, Rome and Paris growing up, the Armenian designer speaks seven languages. Travelling the globe weekly, he finds inspiration for his eclectic designs through his international encounters. Celebrating his collection being sold in Harvey Nichols Kuwait, we had a chance to sit down and find out more about the cufflink genius. What made you begin focusing on cufflinks? I chose cufflinks because I use to be a banker in London, which basically means if you don’t wear cufflinks you are not taken seriously. I was a banker with Merril Lynch for 7 years. Cufflinks were not a fashionable item as much as it was traditional. There was a niche market and I wanted more diversity, so we decided to start with cufflinks. The other reason was that I wanted something I could travel with so that it was easy to build a business on. This year will be our 23rd year.

Back in the 60’s everyone was coming to Kuwait. This was the place to make money. My parents met here and chose to start a family here. My mother was one of the first women to drive in this country. My father left at the end of the 60’s for business that took us across the world so we lived in different cities and spent a lot of time travelling to New York and Philadelphia. Today I spend 70% of my time travelling so I probably spend more nights in British Airways beds than I do in my own bed in London. Where does most of your inspiration come from? A lot of the ideas come from architecture, exhibitions or even just observing what people are doing on the streets. However, for the most part nothing specific that inspires me, it could be completely by accident for example there was a moment where we were driving around and I looked up at Big Ben and that was that, we had to create a pair of cufflinks that incorporated the face of Big Ben. It really depends. Another example would be when I was in Moscow and everyone was carrying revolvers so I thought it would be nice to have a version of the inside of a

What makes you travel the globe when Tateossian is based in London? We are based in London but we have been following the cycle of fashion so we travel to trade shows all over the world for example in Tokyo, Hong Kong, Moscow, and New York, so I am in a different city across the world every week. We have a very global clientele we sell in 71 countries around the world. The constant travelling did not begin at the start of his business. Robert grew up with it as a norm as he tells us about his unpredictable globetrotting:

revolver, so we created one called The Russian Roulette and we added the function so that it spins. Everything is meant to be fun and willy-nilly and that is the joy of having your own business. I really just do what I want. We have our own collections our own signature and we like to stick to that. Also, attending all the trade shows and seeing the new materials, new stones and new ways of combining metal gives us the chance to experiment and constantly try new things. Have you seen a trend in the items that become Best-Sellers based on either gender or country or style? If something is a best seller, it is a best seller globally. We have many items that attract different age groups and budgets. So definitely we have younger people interested in bracelets. Over 30 you have more of disposable income and will go for the more lavish cufflinks. At the end the items 48

had one of your own?

How would you describe your personal style?

I haven’t had a wedding of my own and that is why I can travel so much, but how fantastic! Cufflinks are great for weddings and we also do studs for tuxedos and for women, we have classic pearl necklaces.

My style is traditional with a twist. I have a very unique style. It’s a style that involves a lot of functionality and motion. A lot of our pieces are very practical and functional for example the usb cufflinks, there are some that are . Things that can rotate. That is a lot of the attributes in our pieces which reflect my personal style. What advice would you give men when choosing what to wear? Always dress for the occasion. Whether it is for a date or to the office or a casual event, you should always dress appropriately for the occasion. Dressing the part is key. I don’t understand why you would dress casually, no matter how trendy, to a meeting, or dress up for a hands-on errand. This issue is all about weddings, have you

*Looking at the one-piece cufflinks with diamonds it was love at first sight. We were very quick to dub them as a serious must for weddings. Finally we have to ask, what are the seven languages you speak? English, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, German and Arabic. Which dialect do you speak when talking Arabic? Lebanese.

“Notsi Halooli” Abrar Zenkawi

The half Kuwaiti half Hungarian beauty

first caught our attention on instagram with her incredible illustrations. Taking fashion images and giving them her unique “Notsi” twist. Then we met her at the Fashion Prestige event where we were shocked to see that the talented artist has top model looks that we had to take her from behind her work to in front of the camera. How did you get started? Since I was a kid I loved Cindy Crawford, that made me pay attention to other models and I would get inspired to draw them and that’s how I got started. I taught myself how to draw and have been practicing ever since, although I stopped for three years but now I have gotten back into it since last summer. Why the name “Notsi Halooli”? Notsi is a nickname that stuck with me since I was really young, it means bunny in Hungarian. I had a jewelry line that I named Notsiz, as in Notsi is mine. So with my illustrations I still used Notsi but added Halooli which is also very personal, it is another nickname my close relatives and friends call me because when I was younger I would say halaw (Candy in Arabic) “Halooli”. Why did you stop designing jewelry? To concentrate on my illustrations. It was fun, but it wasn’t what I was truly passionate about. Do you have a day job?

Yes. I teach elementary. I use to work in administration in AUM and I was a marketer in PR at Discovery. I teach so that I have time for my drawing. As you know this is for our wedding issue, have you had a wedding or planning one? I am married. I got married three years ago. I never wanted a wedding so we had planned to get married without having one. Then one month before we planned to sign the papers I changed 54

my mind. So I went to the closet store to me in Laila Gallery, where I was when I changed my mind. Went to the first shop and bought the first dress I tried on, it was corseted and poofy. I wore my hair up with a small tiara and long veil. We got married in the last available venue. It was simple, I loved it. Tell us about your Hungarian side, have you lived in Hungary? I’ve lived in Kuwait all my life but travel to Hungary a lot. I love the culture and the people. I speak Hungarian fluently. My grandmother is Persian and my husband is half Mexican so we are a mix of cultures and languages. What inspires you? Mostly fashion, mostly women. Photoshoots inspire me. My main inspiration however, is victoria’s secret models. If you had to pick a favourite VS model, who would it be?

A favourite model? From victoria’s secret? That’s difficult. But if I had to, and just for this moment I’ll have to go with Miranda Kerr, but all of them are beautiful. Adriana Lima as well, she’s everyone’s favourite though.. *Yeah especially for guys. Have you studied art? Educationally I never took art courses except for oil painting for a month. I stopped, I got bored. I studied English at Kuwait University, it has nothing to do with what I like but I plan on taking courses to do with art and fashion design. Any place in particular you would like to take these couses? New York. I’m obsessed. Where do you work on your drawing? I work from home, that’s where I started and still based for now. What are your hobbies? Designing, painting, anything to do with creativity. Working out a lot, if that’s a hobby? Travelling and music. What type of music? Trance and house; the ones with really loud beats. People find it annoying but I listen to that when I’m drawing. Working out can be considered a hobby, what are your favourite workouts? Pilates, jogging and riding my bike. Are you planning on getting more involved in the fashion industry? I am. I recently was the art director and stylist of a photo shoot for the Fashionet Company. The theme was doll house. That was a lot of fun. I’m joining events to showcase my work and I have a few designers I’m working with, to illustrate for. It is amazing how things happen, for example I was upset because I lost one of my first ever paintings five years ago. Recently at the prestige event a lady came up to me telling me 56

she had found the painting. It felt amazing to get it back after all these years. You have a celebrity following on Instagram, right? Kind of, Kim Kardashian posted my illustration of her. Then she tagged her sister Kendal on the illustration I drew of Kendal, so Kendal posted that. It felt great. This is just the beginning for Abrar. With the new collaborations, photo shoots and many other opportunities coming up for her, we know she will be part of incredible projects.

His & Her Wedding Trend

Hats, Tiaras and Flowers on your hair There are the dresses and suits, jewelry and cufflinks, brooches and pins, ties and shoes; so much attention to detail but the adorning closet to your face is the most crucial. It is a shame when your hat, tiara or flower band or clip outshines or is oversized for your features. Take the lead from the royals and celebs that know just how to be on the edge from the over-the-top and still look their absolute best. Stay true to your personality and choose colours and styles that suit you for a complete look.

CELEBRITY weddings

Our favourite wedding: Lauren Bush & David Lauren It was an event that saw political royalty marrying fashion royalty. Lauren Bush, President George W. Bush’s niece and David Lauren, son of Ralph Lauren, stayed true to their heritage and had a beautiful country wedding. Full of luxury, tradition and old fashioned flair; the groom even wore blue socks as a token of good luck. Who was the designer behind that beautifully intricate dress? Lauren’s father in-law of course! It is no surprise that it took 100 craftspeople 3,000 hours to handembroider the pearls and flower motifs. Just as Ralph Lauren banks on his classical American style, they followed suit with their House on the Prairie theme which makes their wedding a staple for the whole industry.

Celeb Weddings Hugh Hefner and Crystal Harris Married last New Years After all the drama that happened back in 2011 when Crystal backed out of the wedding just days before it was meant to take place, we are still surprised that these two reconciled fast enough to get hitched on New Year’s Eve. Did Hugh forget all the things she said about him and does he not notice how she has a negative attitude when talking about him? For some reason everything she says about him sounds backhanded. For example, when asked why she chose to get back with 86 year old Hef, she replied; “I want the security”. Apparently the 26 year old has signed a prenuptial agreement and is auctioning off her wedding dress to raise money for lymphoma charity in honor of Mary O’Connor. Good first moves but Crystal, We are watching you!

LeBron James sends out his wedding invites TMZ has released photos of NBA star LeBron James’ Save the Date Invitations. The Super cute invitations feature caricatures of LeBron with soon-to-be wife and long term girlfriend Savannah Brinson along with their two sons LeBron Jr. and Bryce. They are all featured in wedding outfits, we love it! The ceremony will be taking place later this year in San Diego. No news on any other details but we will be staying tuned to see if their nuptials are as fun as the invites!

Two most adorable Hollywood wedding dresses designed by Giambattista Valli The Italian fashion designer Giambattista Valli is the genius behind the whimsical wedding dresses worn by Jessica Biel when marrying Justin Timberlake and Margherita Missoni when marrying Eugenio Amos. We love the spin on the traditional white ensemble. Valli has the ability to create these beautiful and sweet designs without making them look too bubblegum pink and young. Margherita’s dress was of course made with Missoni silk and organza from the family fashion house and perfectly matched the outdoor garden theme.

K nown for her enchanting take on interiors

and the luxury lifestyle, Kelly Wearstler is one of the world’s top tastemakers and Top Design judge. She was born in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina on November 21, 1967 and is a prominent interior designer. She graduated from Myrtle Beach High School and received her BFA from the Massachusetts College of Art. She is also the founder and owner of House of KWID (Kelly Wearstler Interior Design). She is credited for her colorful mod-baroque style of interiors, like those of the Viceroy hotels in Santa Monica and Los Angeles. It also stands out in the Tides of Miami Beach and the Avalon in Beverly Hills. Wearstler’s unique vision is also evident in the restaurants, select offices, retail environments and residences she has worked on. Her debut monograph, Modern Glamour: The Art of Unexpected Style, became a Los Angeles Times bestseller. This was followed by another book Domicilium Decoratus, in 2005. Wearstler is also a regular contributor to magazines like Elle, W and Harper’s Bazaar. In 2007, Wearstler opened her own boutique at Bergdorf Goodman. She also redesigned its restaurant and lounge. It showcases a variety

of home accessories that she designed, and is reserved for that particular store. Wearstler also introduced an extensive line of carpets for The Rug Company in the spring of 2008. That year, she also created a fabric and trim collection for Groundworks at Lee Jofa. Her portfolio of home products also consists of decorative pillows, throws, and coverings for beds, tabletops and walls. Wearstler was also credited as Kelly Gallagher in September 1994 edition of Playboy magazine, where she was named Playboy of the Month. However, this leading designer continued her successful career in helping aspiring interior decorators and designers in the Bravo TV reality game show Top Design. Kelly Wearstler’s name is synonymous with “raw and refined” style. The interior designer-turneddesigner (and four-time author) applies the same thoughtfulness to her interiors as she does to her collections. When we peeked inside her Beverly Hills abode, we were smitten with the sheer size of the home and the attention to detail throughout. No crevasse or corner was overlooked, and true to form, every inch had the signature K.W. touch. A true mom-trepreneur, she’s got her vintageinspired brass hand in every aspect of her empire. the average human: she’s even got a “fashion house” out back for all her archived pieces. Oh, and she’s got more Manolos than Carrie Bradshaw! Believe it. With a completely distinctive style that juxtaposes refinement with rawness and melds color, whimsy, sophistication and swank, multifaceted designer Kelly Wearstler has revolutionized the look, feel and meaning of modern American glamour. Wearstler’s career took flight in 1999, when she infused Beverly Hills’ Avalon Hotel with the unexpected, fearless aesthetic that has now become her signature. The bold, maximalist Midcentury design has been celebrated by critics and guests alike, and shepherded the current era in boutique hotel décor where dazzling, one-of-akind layouts are de rigueur. In addition to her commercial work, Wearstler continuously creates grand residential interiors for some of the most prominent players in the worlds of art, business and entertainment. Recently, Wearstler debuted a collection of readyto-wear, jewelry, furniture, home accessories and objects d’art based on the vibrancy of her interiors, while simultaneously opening a 2,400-squarefoot flagship boutique on Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles. In addition to her freestanding boutique, her eponymous collection is also available at storied luxury retailers including Bergdorf Goodman, Neiman Marcus, and Selfridges, as well as specialty stores worldwide and on her own robust e-commerce site, KellyWearstler.com. Her expansive list of credits includes collaborations with some of the industry’s most respected names, including The Rug Company and Bergdorf Goodman. Last spring, Wearstler launched a line of fabrics with Lee Jofa — her second collection for the venerable textile company — and is readying to launch a line of signature wallpapers and trims with the brand, her first in six years. In addition to her decorative items, ten Wearstler-designed patterns of both formal and casual dinnerware are available through Pickard, one of America’s oldest makers of fine china. As a showcase for her creative work, Wearstler has published three books: Modern Glamour: The Art of Unexpected Style, Domicilium Decoratus and Hue. A fourth book, Rhapsody, has been 66

Wearstler also served as a two-time judge on the Bravo network’s interior design competition series, Top Design. Her work has been featured in publications including Elle Décor, Harper’s Bazaar, Architectural Digest, The Financial Times, InStyle, Elle, Conde Nast Traveler, Women’s Wear Daily and The New York Times, among many others. In an extensive 2009 profile, The New Yorker called Wearstler “the presiding grande dame of West Coast interior design.” She has also been documented on the CBS Morning Show. Wearstler is a South Carolina native and graduate of the Massachusetts College of Art. When she isn’t working, she enjoys surfing, spending time with her family and taking photographs for her blog, MyVibeMyLife.com. VERSACE AVENUE MONTAIGNE BOUTIQUE RE-OPENS WITH NEW STORE CONCEPT Versace is happy to announce the re-opening of its Avenue Montaigne boutique, the first in Europe with the new store concept conceived by Donatella Versace in collaboration with English architect Jamie Fobert. The 350 square meter store mixes the opulence and traditions of Italian architecture with the dynamism and energy of Versace today. Marble mosaic, brass and Perspex create a modern and luxurious environment for Versace’s men’s and women’s readyto-wear and accessories, enhanced by an exclusive lighting design by Thierry Dreyfuss, who chooses to have the light coming from the clothes and the accessories displays and who draws a series of exclusive golden brass lamps, put down or suspended, reflecting the visitors and the clothes as in mirrors. Past meets future in the boutique with its mosaic floor, inspired by 9th century Byzantine churches, contrasted with Perspex walls and shelving which appear to float above it. The circles of the mosaic floor are echoed in the curved walls, which add energy and the unexpected. Brass fittings throughout consolidate the ultimate mood of luxury. “I love that our Avenue Montaigne boutique is the first in Europe to be refreshed with the new Versace store concept. Avenue Montaigne is a true center of fashion, and the perfect home for our opulent and dynamic store. In his designs, Jamie Fobert has created a space where the new Versace comes alive. To me, the store is like a continuing dialogue, between our past and future, between Jamie Fobert and I, and between Versace and our customers,” says Donatella Versace “The new Versace concept recaptures the opulent beauty of Gianni Versace’s first stores, but layered onto this is an optimism for the future of Versace in the new century. There is a tension between the futuristic element of the Perspex and the deeply historic floor. Surrounding this centerpiece are soft, curving walls and shelves in rough plaster. The overall effect is undeniably opulent yet completely contemporary,” says Jamie Fobert.

It was 30 years ago today… SWATCH MARKS THREE DECADES OF THE WATCH THAT CHANGED THE WORLD The watch that changed the world was born 30 years ago today. March 1, 1983, the first 12 models made their debut. Looking back now, they seem unlikely heroes, but events soon revealed their true identity: they were the avantgarde, the shock troops of a revolution named Swatch. Today, after three decades of sly wit, audacious innovation, playful provocation and inexhaustible joie de vivre, Swatch has every reason to celebrate. Those first 12 watches from 1983 have been followed by millions, and now there is one that brings it all back to mind — the impossible, incredible story of Swatch: SWATCH Est. 1983 (SUOZ161). A New Gent, SWATCH Est. 1983 features a transparent plastic case and strap and a skeleton dial offering a clear view of the movement within. Key components are highlighted in gold; on one, a golden driving wheel, the word CELEBRATE appears twice, in black. And printed in gold on a broad silver band are all those extraordinary years, from 1983 to 2013. Each year brings back memories of one or another fantastic Swatch watch: a POP, Scuba 200, heavy-metal Irony, colourful Gent, seductive Skin or high-tech Touch — not to mention those amazing creations by artists, athletes, fashion designers and — who could possibly forget? — the first Swatch watch you ever owned … This festive New Gent comes packaged in shimmering gold, the word CELELBRATE embossed in the surface.

Under the Romance Sun!

Udaipur, India. Taking lead from our favourite Brazilian couple (page 24); Udaipur, the most romantic city in India has made it to our top choices. The biggest luxury to be enjoyed in this unique city is the peacefulness. The lavish palaces and cobblestone streets of the lakeside city sets the mood throughout all there is to do. A mirage in the middle of a desert, Udaipur has a tantalizing culture. There is so much to explore within the old city walls, rich with artisans, jewelers, craftsmen and herbalists. Stay at the world-class resorts and enjoy the 5-star culinary class available all around. The most heart-wrenchingly romantic music can be heard through the active streets, originating from the gypsy tradition of Rajasthani folk music as well as dance. Something that needs a mention is the fact that this city was prominently featured in the James Bond film: Octopussy, a fact that locals are so proud of; you are sure to find a rooftop restaurant projecting the movie on to the walls. Priceless!

TRAVEL: Unique honeymoon destinations

Aruba As the first word in the classic Beach Boys hit “Kokomo”, Aruba has all the qualities to earn its right as a staple in honeymoon destinations. Not having to worry which time of year you have your wedding in order to enjoy Aruba’s white sand beaches, glass-bottom boat rides and snorkeling in the turquoise waters, since the weather is temperate all year long. The beach stretches across seven miles giving you plenty to explore with the opportunity to go from one island to another by foot or boat. Having been a honeymoon staple for so long, as soon as you let the hotel, restaurants, spas or wherever you visit, know you are on your honeymoon, expect many freebies and perks. Newlyweds are highly celebrated there. However, what makes Aruba so special and one of our favourites is the beautiful connection to nature that can be had. All the water surrounding the islands meets the highest quality standards of the World Health Association. There are desert preserves, parks and wildlife. Shopping is in the form of markets that are open daily with always something new to discover, so it is definitely worth revisiting. So we say “Bon Bini” and enjoy Aruba!

Fifty Shades Tour de France. Have a Fifty Shades of Grey inspired honeymoon and visit the exact same romantic spots in France that the steamy couple did in the third installment of the cult book series. Just as how Christian and Ana began their honeymoon, cruise the French Riviera on a luxury yacht from Cannes, France. Then head to Saint-Paul-de-Vence, a hilltop village in Provence where you can shop at the boutiques, eat at the quaint cafĂŠs and visit one of the many art galleries. As mentioned in the book the best place to have lunch is on the enchanting terrace of Le Saint Paul Hotel. And of course! The final touch would be a visit to the 18th-century Palace of Versailles. These stops are sure to give you Fifty Shades of a beautiful and thrilling honeymoon.

JAGUAR UNVEILS XJR AND XKR-S GT

Jaguar has today unveiled two new additions to its R performance range, the XJR sedan and the XKR-S GT. The 550PS XJR – Jaguar’s new flagship sports saloon – combines supercar performance and assertive looks with the high levels of luxury already associated with the XJ range. It is capable of sprinting from zero to 60mph in 4.4 seconds (0-100km/h in 4.6 seconds) and on to an electronically limited top speed of 174mph (280km/h). The XKR-S GT, developed by Jaguar’s ETO division, is the ultimate road-going but trackready version of the XK coupe. The XKR-S GT features bespoke aerodynamic components and suspension developments to increase downforce and optimise high-speed cornering ability. It will reach 60mph in just 3.9-seconds, develops up to 145kg of downforce, and is the first production Jaguar to be fitted with carbon ceramic brakes. Initial production will be limited to just 30 units, making it the rarest ‘R’ model in the 25-year history of Jaguar’s R performance cars. “The new XJR epitomises the three pillars 86

of technology, performance and seductive design which the Jaguar brand stands for in the twenty-first century, while delivering new levels of dynamic ability in a luxury saloon. “The XKR-S GT is the most extreme iteration of the Jaguar R Brand’s performance

focus. Utilising race-car derived technology, all-aluminium construction and an uncompromised approach to aerodynamic efficiency, the result is a car as capable on the track as it is exhilarating on the road.” Adrian Hallmark, Global Brand Director, Jaguar

THE BUGATTI Veyron 16.4 GRAND SPORT VITESSE FOR A LIMITED TIME AT AL-ZAYANI The super car, the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse, is now at Al-Zayani for a very limited time only for those eager customers to visit the showroom and experience its presence. It is the culmination of engineers’ efforts to “transfer all the achievements of the Super Sport over to the Grand Sport.” The resultant open-top missile packs 1200 hp, nearly 20 percent more than the Grand Sport convertible’s sum of 1001. As is the case with the Super Sport, the power bump comes primarily from increasing the size of the 16-cylinder engine’s quad turbochargers as well as its intercoolers. The chassis has been tweaked as well to support the power increase. The Bugatti Vitesse will be the most powerful roadster in the world and the fastest as well. Unlike the specially commissioned boutique editions Bugatti has made a habit of releasing to keep its name in the headlines, the Grand Sport Vitesse is an actual multi-car production model. But those with the means will want to act fast: Although it packs Super Sport power, the Grand Sport Vitesse falls under Bugatti’s self-imposed decree to cap Grand Sport production at 150 units only.

Luxury made in Germany Whether it was the Beatles or the Stones, the VW Beetle or the Ford Capri, Pucci or Yamamoto, the 1970s were full of sharp contrasts where style was concerned. Fashion-lovers worldwide agreed on just one thing: never leave home without Bordeauxred leather accessories sporting the horseshoe motif. Today Aigner is internationally reknowned as a modern classical brand. Since then a great deal has changed in the fashion world, also at Aigner. What remains is the horseshoe logo and the firm statement in favour of luxury and love of the product. Today Aigner is one of the most well-known German luxury and lifestyle brands. Whether it’s Jakarta, Seoul, Taiwan, Hong Kong or Dubai – the Fashion and Leather Collections from Munich are in great demand at all of the world’s top locations. And here’s how it all began. During the 1930s, Hungarian-born Etienne Aigner had his first successes as a handbag designer at the Haute Couture shows in Paris. This was followed in the 1950s by the presentation of his own collection in New York, when the typical horseshoe-shaped ‘A’ logo was first used. This marked the start of a success story that is still continuing today. 92
