EDITOR’S LETTER

Dear Trendsetters, A mall that hosts the largest flagships in the region of the most exclusive of brands, a stone clad twisting tower that is the highest in the world in its category, a 60 minutes firework that made the whole world stop and watch..THIS is Kuwait today! An Amiri Plan to construct a city like no other, a metro, new oil and gas facilities, new residential areas, new roads and infrastructure, new hospitals, new electricity plants..THIS is Kuwait the future! Kuwaitis have always been known for their forward thinking, their earned elitism, their ability to be trendsetters, let us NEVER forget that! And let our focus always be on how we can build better, work better, dress and compose ourselves better, discover and live better. And let us not EVER follow chaotic trends that lead nations backwards, Kuwaitis after all have always stood apart from the crowd. After all, Kuwaitis are and always will be the trendsetters! Wishing you all a flourishing 2013 Till next month, Zeina Mokaddam

Every New Year’s Eve before midnight, people around the world wait in anticipation for the clock to strike 12. Feeling sentimental about the journey that has passed, and excited to begin a new one, we bring to you an issue that will wrap up your year stylishly whilst preparing you for the next.

During my visit to Venice, I purchased a unique mask and thought it would be perfect for the cover of THETALK – a representation of New Year’s Eve, and a symbol that has no gender. Although simple, this mask carries a lot of meaning to me... but I’ll leave it to you to find your own interpretation.

It was Coco Chanel who once said “A girl should be two things: classy and fabulous”. And I’m thinking that there’s no reason why a guy shouldn’t achieve the same two states. Let this month’s men’s style guide steer you (or your man) towards his best look for 2013

Every year, I make 100 resolutions of things I want to change in my life. Every year, I find myself making the same resolutions I made the year before. This year, I decided not to have any.. and my only resolution is to have no resolution! Life is about embracing the moment and living in the “now” rather than being caught up planning for it when it happens, as you might actually miss it. May 2013 be full of your presence in every moment.

LET'S TALK LOCAL DESIGNS STYLE

Fierce Khaleda Rajab Khaleda Rajab, a Bahraini national, has done it big- not just in our region, but in the outside world as well. With her innate sense of style, both eccentric and glamorous, she has combined numerous elements of style into a package, creating garments that are sure to make one stand out in a crowd. Rajab is all about taking risks, and to no surprise, she has incorporated that same mindset into her designs; introducing collections that are a mere reflection of her own persona. Fierce, versatile, and inventive, Khaleda Rajab is surely one of the region’s most sought-after designers today.

Have you always had this passion for fashion?

Yes. Since I was really young, around 15 or 16, I remember designing outfits for friends and family. I focused more on costume designs at the time, for prom and Halloween, yet expanded my design interests once moving to Boston for university. I always knew that I wanted to be involved in something to do with fashion, whether it was to own my own boutique, or become a fashion designer. While in Boston, I would find myself looking through the windows of fashion institutes, knowing for a fact that my passions stood there. Nonetheless, I was pushed by my parents to study within the field of business- a decision I am so happy to have made. Now, being the CEO of my own company, I am glad that I have enough knowledge to combine both my business and design skills into one. Did living in the U.S influence your design ideas in any way? I was so accustomed to the fashion in the Middle East before moving to the U.S, and

THETALK / December / 2012

although people here do dress very well and hold an extremely unique sense of style, there was something about the U.S that just pushed my fashion boundaries a little further. In our region, I feel that people choose to stay on the safe side of fashion, becoming less experimental in terms of their style. In the U.S I saw a variety of styles, from bohemian looks to the gothic look, so I was able to capture many different styles, reflecting a number of different personalities. Which of these looks did you believe fit well with your future label? The modern, futuristic look. You can tell from my designs that I do not base them around classic looks or cuts, rather, I like to create avant-garde styles through an asymmetric field, as I believe a woman should be able to stand out in a crowd, adorned in something so unique and different than what can be found in the market. I want those who wear my clothing to hold a sense of confidence whilst being comfortable- no matter how many looks or stares they receive from the crowd.

Do you believe women in the Middle East are able to experiment with extravagant styles? Because we are in the Middle East, it is more difficult to experiment with fashion, as we would not be allowed to wear hot shorts or miniskirts for instance. However, there are ways to tie in the conservative culture with fashion. Ascia, for example, is someone that I am very proud of in the region as she has been able to incorporate the veil into her sense of fashion. She has changed the whole look of the veil, and many people around the world look up to her for that. Is your personality reflected throughout your designs? My personality is actually the most major aspect within my designs. I have a few classic looks with shoulder pads and structured blazers, but I always make sure to give each piece an edge. Each of my garments include a minimal touch, withstanding its wow factor- something very reflective of my own personality. My personality is loud, very loud, but at the same time, I know when to hold back. The line I am working on

21

now, and which will be showcased at Harvey Nichols is the most reflective of me, in my opinion. It will include everyday-wear, with that wow factor, of course. Along with your personality, where do you receive your inspiration to create the designs? For my last collection, I was in a coffee shop in London, and the inspiration just came to me. As it started to rain, all of the fashionable girls outside began to hide in the corners, safeguarding their bags and shoes so that the rain would not affect the suede or leather. It was then I decided I should create a rain collection, placing the elements of the rain drops and generating something more beautiful out of it. When viewing your comments on instagram, we have seen that many people refer to you as Lady Gaga. Is she your muse?

22

LOCAL DESIGNS

Lady Gaga is definitely one of them. She is different and although she does not hold back the way I like to, she does grab the world’s attention through her style, and that is something I admire her for. She is able to present her strong personality through her sense of fashion, allowing her to be unique to everyone else in the industry and around the world. Someone else I would consider my muse is Anna Dello Russo, as she holds a different look in the fashion world, and she is not afraid of what people think of that. She has even quoted herself claiming that fashion is fun- and it should be. You have to give in your personality 100% through your style, and be sure to play around with it. What are your hopes for the future of fashion design, and are you proud of what you have achieved today? Looking at my interviews four years ago, I believe I have come a long way. I have achieved most of what I hoped to achieve before, and within such a short time, I know I have covered enough. Numerous celebrities have dressed in my designs, from Hofit Golan, to actress Jessica Lowndes of Beverly Hills 9021, to Noelle Reno, the presenter for Fashion TV, and my designs have even been shown on Kourtney and Kim Take over NYC. I want to be out there, and I want to become the next designer to represent the Middle East, becoming a global name with my designs.

25 commercially viable. There are no platforms here for one to go and look for funding, rather, one must ingenuously come up with that and approach people thereafter. All of my funding came from India last year, and I hope that as a Kuwaiti designer, companies will soon step up to the plate as well. People must understand that there is no proper industry here, so to be climbing to the top of one’s game, when someone comes from an infrastructure that does not exist, it will later lend a lot of hope to people and push people to follow their dreams. You say you would like to inspire people to follow their dreams; but what inspires you to continue?

How did you initially get into fashion design? I was studying at the Architecture Association in London, but then decided I would rather explore the world of fashion, prompting me to leave London. I worked in the fashion industry thereafter for two years, then applied to Central Saint Martins. After doing my course in fashion at Central Saint Martins, I went on to work with Alexander Mcqueen and John Galliano, and finally came back to Kuwait three years ago and began my own label. Having attended Central Saint Martins and working with top figures in the industry, do you believe those experiences to be defining moments in your career? I don’t believe there is ever a defining moment in one’s career. However, I do believe I have grasped a lot in terms of experience throughout these different milestones in my career. I’ve learned through first-hand experience, the ins and outs of the industry- from designing to placing embroideries, models, fittings, and many other intricate details that I wouldn’t have known otherwise about fashion design.

You recently showcased your designs at London Fashion Week. What can you tell me about that experience? It was an amazing experience, being the first Kuwaiti to actually reach there. London Fashion Week is an extremely professional and important platform which reaches a wide audience. There is no room there for mediocrity, as you are playing with the big boys; so unless you really step up your game and prove yourself, you will drown. As Fashion Week comes twice a year, I am now working towards February. It’s a hard process with lots of work, and it does take a lot of time and effort; from the logistics and funding, to the design work and embroidery, all must be done well in order to ensure everything falls into place correctly. Have you found it hard to receive funding from companies in Kuwait? Because people in the Middle East have such an immense knowledge of art, there are many foundations supporting it. However, people fail to realize that art and fashion are both businesses, and fashion has recently become more

Everything inspires me. I am constantly thinking and designing in my head, and I visit art museums, flea markets, the theatre, ballet shows, and a lot of time on my own to find my inspiration. Everything around me and all of my experiences inspire me, even my culture. By using my Arabic and Indian culture as inspiration I have incorporated the notion of draping, hiding and veiling, and mixed that together with western views of the body. My next show is to be held in mid-february and I already have the silhouettes in my mind, along with a few drawings here and there. I like to make sure I have gathered enough information, and just as like a collage, I put it all together in the end. I choose to hold continuity from one label to the next so that people can have different options which carry an echo of what they had from the last collection. You are now based in Dubai. Have you found this move to be essential to your career? I moved to Dubai because there is a fashion infrastructure over there. I think the Kuwaiti market is very sophisticated in terms of its clients, but I see Dubai as a greater platform for emerging fashion designers in the region. There, you can find press, magazines, a social scene, an international scene, and many other factors that create a different dynamic than Kuwait. Even in terms of factories and production, I see Dubai as a base- a center for the Middle East. After my move, I have expanded back into India, buying my fabrics from there, along with some knitwear from London. The move had to be made. Nonetheless, I do find Kuwait to be a good platform in terms of clientele. After

placing my collection at Harvey Nichols Kuwait, my clothing has reached a vast and varied section of society. I have my private clients, but Harvey Nichols is an avenue to different parts of society. Within the first 10 days of placing my clothing there, I have received a 50-60% sell out rate. It’s a very good synergy, especially in Kuwait, and I work very closely with the team as they help to promote designers from this region. What makes you different than the other emerging designers in the region? I have studied design and worked with professionals in the industry for 10 years. I come from a privileged background, and was luckily afforded the best education, so I want to give back to my countries, both India and Kuwait by doing the best in my field and through inspiring people. What sets me apart is that I am me, and my clothes are me. There is a lot of hard work, time, tears, and sacrifice, but at the end of the day, these designs are a reflection of who I am. How would you define success, and do you believe you have reached there? Absolutely not. I definitely have not reached where I wanted to as there is so much more I would like to learn and achieve. I look at it as a journey of personal and self growth, and I don’t let anything go to my head. I take it as it comes, and it’s still a lot of work and heartache, but again, I am working towards creating an awareness for the youth to know they can follow their dreams and achieve their goals. The label is slowly growing and it has its followings. I would like to soon create an established brand, run a fashion house, move to Paris, create a menswear line, and just continue what it is I have already been doing. My idea of success is not so much what it was 10 years ago, but I am happy to have achieved the amount I already have, and I surely will continue for many years to come. Designs of India Manish Arora

Considered one of the most entertaining designers to watch during Paris Fashion Week, Manish Arora is known for his rich palette of psychedelic colors and kitsch motifs in garments combining traditional Indian embroidery with Western silhouettes. His spring/ summer 2013 show was no exception- he chose to reference India whilst incorporating a comical layer of Bollywood as gold leggings, facial jewelry, clip-on necklaces, and bangles adorned the models atop their simple and elegant garments.

egarded as the John Galliano of India, R Manish Arora showcased his first collection in 1997, retailing initially in India. Three years later, he represented India at the Hong Kong Fashion Week and participated in the first ever India Fashion Week held in New Delhi. Afterwards, he went on to launch his second label, ‘Fish Fry,’ a colorful, sportswear-styled line in association with the athletic apparel manufacturer Reebok. A year after, he opened his first flagship store in New Delhi, and a second in Mumbai. Another successful showing at India Fashion Week in 2003 led to a stocking deal with fashion house Maria Luisa (Paris) and the beginning of a successful business began. During 2005, his successful debut at London Fashion Week led him to receive an overwhelming response from buyers as well as the press. Since being invited by Didier Grumbach to show his Spring/Summer 20008 collection at Paris Fashion Week, his collections have been showcased every season since. Manish Arora is now a well-reputed name in the fashion industry, creating exceptional pieces of work through unique collaborations with some of the biggest names in the fashion scene.

INTERNATIONAL DESIGNS

For this year’s Paris Fashion Week show, Manish Arora’s designs presented a combination of the ancient and contemporary, with a mind-blowing collection of India Enchanted jewelry and designs. The collection, crafted by Manish Arora and Amrapali Jewels, were inspired by the decadence of the royal Indian lineage. Antique jewelry from Amrapali were fused with pastel colour palettes, demonstrating the high level of precision and meticulous craftsmanship intertwined to create this superbly magnificent collection. Once the collection was unveiled with all its beauty and creativity, it was very well received by the international audience attending Paris Fashion Week.

Stages & Set-Ups Most Outrageous at Fashion Week While we love seeing all the exciting, innovative ensembles on the runway and in the front row, sometimes the most memorable outcomes arise from the stage and fashion show set-ups themselves. An homage to ‘80s pop stars, including Madonna and Boy George, John Paul Gaultier’s runway featured a tableau of dancers hanging from the ceilings through a string. Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel, transformed his runway into a model for sustainable energy using wind turbines and faux solar panels. Furthermore, Louis Vuitton’s set-up gave way to a yellow-and-white checkered floor that matched the patterns on the model’s clothing, with escalators including the same patterns towards the back of the stage. At Givenchy, an imposing organ was placed in the center of the runway, creating a mood that complemented the gray, black, and white designs displayed. Marc Jacobs opted to use a triangular runway, recalling the mod style of the 1960’s. In Paris, Rick Owen’s show began with a wall of foam that turned into a floor of studs, using technology from Ibiza’s foam parties. And finally, Alexander Wang set out a fleet of platinum blond amazons, cut the lights, and revealed that the garments were actually glow-in-the-dark!

A Grand Finale China Fashion Week 2012 As a multi-million dollar industry, the world of fashion deals with glamour, dreams, and the latest trends. China, as the most populated country in the world, is not an exception. In a place with such a large number of inhabitants, the popularity of fashion has acquired a different meaning. China Fashion Week is a center for both avant-garde and timeless works of fashion in both clothing design and make-up styling. For this year’s China Fashion Week, design collections were showcased with a variety of different styles that made up of men’s apparel, women’s, children, and wedding gowns. A combination of everyday design lines and haute couture were displayed, along with its extravagant gathering of designers, models, manufacturers, and intellectuals. The majority of the models along the runway were Chinese, as a fair amount of the fashion itself played off the nation’s deep-set love of colors, shapes, colors, styles, and motifs. Although the importance of the fashion itself is not to be overlooked, China Fashion Week also plays a crucial role in bringing together the developing minds of the design universe.

HER STYLE ICON

A Modern Media Mogul Miroslava Duma When it comes to Miroslava Duma, the petite founder of fashion news website Buro 24/7 exudes a perfect counterargument that size actually does matter. Miroslava Duma has continuously made global fashion headlines year after year for her eclectic yet polished style. She is now also a burgeoning media mogul, amassing an audience that remains keen on watching her sense of avant-garde style through fashion shows and numerous blogs around the world.

THETALK / December / 2012

41

M iroslava Duma, or Mira to her friends, is

one of the glamorous troupe of women known as the ‘Russian Mafia’ in the fashion scene of New York. This group of women have dominated the street style blogs since arriving on the scene a few years ago for their unbounded and impeccable taste in high-end designer styles. Her immaculate look is proof that the Russian style, stereotyped as tight and bright, has evolved to come something much more sophisticated over the years. Ever since her birth, Miroslava’s sense of style has always been eye-catching, even when attending Moscow High School. Sources claim she had always taken the trend a little bit further than the other girls at school. Today, the amazing Russian blogger can be seen featured on numerous street style columns of magazines such as Vogue and Elle, and has become known a fashion guru by many. She began making global fashion headlines when her photos appeared on popular fashion blogs like ‘Jak & Jil’ and ‘The Sartorialist.’ As her image and style has become widely know, her popularity in the fashion world seems to mirror what she sees happening in Russia in terms of its burgeoning fascination with global fashion. The Soviet Union was once a fashion-free zone, with absolutely no fashion boutiques or magazines. In 1991 though, things changed after the collapse of the USSR, and young people were eager to get as far away as possible from the stereotypes of the Russian Kitsch. Today, many designers such as Vika Gazinskaya and Alexander Terekhov have become part of a revolution of thinking, showing that Moscow has the potential to become a fashion capital in the world. “The department stores had such limited stock of clothes- I was a huge fan of the Hollywood golden age, so I got my fashion fix from watching movies featuring Katherine Kepburn, Cary Grant, and Marilyn Monroe,” said Miroslava. Although Miroslava’s part in the revolution is less design-based, she has dedicated her life to fashion, art, architecture, music and style, by becoming a freelance writer through web journalism on Buro 24/7. According to Miroslava, what differentiates young Russians from other consumers of fashion is their sense of risk-taking; and Miroslava seems to have exhibited that style very well, exuding a sense of style so unique to others in the industry and grabbing the attention of many along the way.

HIS STYLE ICON

Iconically Quirky Johnny Depp

Johnny Depp is perhaps one of the most versatile actors of his day and age in Hollywood, with an unconventional style which was instigated following the portrayal of Captain Jack Sparrow in the acclaimed Pirates of the Caribbean. It is with no doubt that Depp has his own distinct image, and follows no trends; instead, he cultivates his own relaxed, offbeat style. Eyeliner, hats, bracelets, and nail polish are his staples, and somehow, it works.

THETALK / December / 2012

53 orn in 1963, Johny Depp was raised in B Florida, dropping out of school at the age of 15 in the hopes of becoming a rock musician. Depp rose to prominence after taking on a role in the 1980’s television series, 21 Jump Street, prompting him to become a teen idol worldwide. Afterwards, Depp turned to film for more challenging roles, playing the lead character in Edward Scissorhands, Sleepy Hollow, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Alice in Wonderland, and of course, Pirates of the Caribbean. Depp has played many characters throughout his career, winning a Golden Globe Award and Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Actor as well. But on top of all that, Depp has garnered a sex symbol status in American cinema, and has been known to become one of the most stylish men of Hollywood. Over the years, Depp engaged himself in several relationships with famous actresses and models, including the likes of Kate Moss, Winona Ryder, and Vanessa Paradis. Many throughout the years have focused mainly on his girlfriends’

styles, but recently, Depp has been getting his turn in the spotlight. Throughout his lengthy career, we have seen him sport some quirky fashion statements; from Canadian tuxedos to his signature Indiana Jones-style hats. Like most trend-setters, Depp does not care what others think of him, and he is having a grand old time just being ‘Johnny,’ looking towards his inner guide for inspiration rather than looking out. It’s not every day you can find someone who is completely comfortable in their own skin, and can wear anything and still look good. Of the many looks we love, we adore his usage of hats, necklaces, rings, tattoos, hair, and boots to create a look of eccentric coolness. Not many people consider Depp stylish because his style is, well, too out there, but we, on the other hand, beg to differ. From head to toe, to tattoos and eyeglasses, Johnny Depp has one of the most recognizable styles in show business. Some say its grunge, while others say it’s multicultural; we like to stick with iconically quirky- and we can’t help but love him and his style for that.

HIS SEASON’S TREND

Military-Inspired If you look to keep warm and look stylish this season, the most essential piece would definitely be the military jacket. From the trench coat to aviator sunglasses, men’s fashion staples have been born out of the necessity of war. For this reason, military style comes around again and again, but this time in the guise of modern army-inspired clothing. This style comes in many forms and in the past few years, it has marched down the street with a historical pomp, and on the runway, with a move of austerity, practicality, function, and form. This season the military jackets can be long, from parka to a shortened coat. Simple forms are opposed by complex coats, and layering effects are in fashion. This military style can be expressed in either color or detail, or it may copy the actual retro-military fashion of the 40’s.

Prada Prada Opens A New Store In Kuwait City In The 360 Mall

Prada opens a new boutique in Kuwait City, in the prestigious 360 Mall. Designed by architect Roberto Baciocchi, the store occupies a total surface of 380 square meters offering the women’s clothing, bags, accessories and footwear collections and the men’s luggage and accessories collections. The visually striking façade is characterized by a luminous curtain lending the space a refined identity: fitted into the regular geometry of polished steel profiles, the curtain – made of resin – opens to unveil two entrances, the shop windows, the light boxes and the precious display cabinets. Inside, the shop is divided in two areas: the first dedicated to women’s bags and accessories with chequered black and white marble flooring, elegant display niches on the walls covered in green fabric, and shelves in saffiano cera with polished steel profiles. The second, of poligonal shape, dedicated to bags and footwear displayed in the classic green fabric boxes. The clothes, instead, are found in a more “intimate” area, where the softness of the walls covered in green fabric and the contrasting perspex of the displays and of the light boxes make the enviroment glamorous and refined. These two spaces are connected by a walkway totally dedicated to men’s leathergoods, enriched by elegant black and white marble flooring and floor to ceiling black saffiano leather shelves with polished steel profiles. Classic glass and polished steel counters and soft couches in velvet complete the furniture.

WATCH BRAND PREVIEWS

Blancpain Speed Thrills The latest addition to the L-evolution collection features a flyback split-seconds chronograph mechanism and a large date. This watch, combining carbone fibre and cutting-edge technology, reflects Blancpain’s strong commitment in GT racing. Having decided to adopt such an extreme attitude, Blancpain naturally chose carbon fibre in creating this timepiece. Its lightness and sturdiness, combined with its aesthetic appeal, provide a wealth of development options. This high-tech material was used to create certain watch components: the carbon fibre bezel, caseback and dial represent significant technical feats, reflecting Blancpain’s characteristic innovative strength. To accentuate this sporting personality, the large date display features a digital font; red accents punctuate the black background; the 8 o’clock pusher echoes the shape of a fuel-cap; and the 9 o’clock counter that of an insignia. At the heart of this new

model beats Calibre 69F9 with its 409 parts including 44 jewels, ensuring a 40-hour power reserve. It is equipped with a column wheel that guarantees precise pusher control, as well as a vertical coupling-clutch that avoids any unwanted jerking of the hand when the chronograph is activated. This movement combines a flyback split-second chronograph mechanism with a large twin-aperture date display. The split-second chronograph function is a major horological complication that enables readings of “split” or intermediate times thanks to a so-called split-second (rattrapante or “catch-up” in French) hand that is superimposed on the chronograph sweep seconds hand. The overstitched strap in black alcantara features carbon inserts reminiscent of the latest breakthrough developments in the field of racing cars, while the carbon folding clasp adds an ultimate touch of refined detailing.

Certina DS First Chronograph Dynamic, modern men seek a timepiece that neatly blends sporty ruggedness, precision and durability, with just the right amount of elegance. The new DS First Chronograph brings together the best of these qualities, in a classy yet straightforward timepiece with a very masculine feel, thanks to its broad ceramicfinished bezel, boldly sculptured steel case and five-row stainless-steel bracelet. Certina’s DS First Chronograph is recognizable at first glance. Handsome and natural, it blends established Certina design principles with the Swiss watchmaker’s usual rugged reliability and attention to detail. Selected areas of its exquisite 41mm case and horns, beautifully shaped around a broad bezel finished in hightech ceramic with PVD markings, are tastefully finished in either polished or brushed areas for a delightfully elegant result. The full stainlesssteel version is equipped with a five-row steel bracelet whose links follow the same visual

THETALK / December / 2012

theme, with three rows of brushed links neatly cradling two rows with a polished finish. Modest, unpretentious yet incredibly stylish. Behind a rounded sapphire crystal with antireflection coating, the black dial is pure business. Solid, large indices and broad HM hands with generous amounts of Superluminova ensure excellent readability in all lighting conditions. Three snailed counters include small-second timing and two chrono counters for 12 h and 1/10 sec chronograph functions and the support of two central counters for 60 min and 60 sec timing. The date window is

comfortably placed at 6 o’clock. This classy timepiece is of course equipped with the Certina DS Concept and a screw-on case-back, to ensure water resistance up to a pressure of 20 bar (200 m). For added aesthetic finesse, the tip of the protected screw-in crown is monogrammed with the letters DS and is fully polished, as are also the two adjoining chrono push-buttons. The DS First Chronograph is also available in a leather-strap version, a full-titanium version or with three hands, to match specific needs or lifestyles.

The Man Behind the Victoria’s Secret Show Shoes The Victoria’s Secret 2012 show was a big hit among many, and almost everyone has been interested to know who the designer behind those super sexy shoes on the runway was. Well, it’s none other than our very own Nicholas Kirkwood. Unlike past seasons where a collection of footwear designers had created shoes for the world’s most glamorous lingerie show, this year, Germanborn, London-based designer Kirkwood was the sole designer involved. Kirkwood described his experience by stating, ‘I think everyone fantasizes about being a part of the Victoria’s Secret show in some way, and it was an exciting opportunity to be able to contribute to this fantasy.’ By combining his signature graphic soles and statement heels with the theme of this show, Kirkwood was a great fit for the collection. His shoes were all about drama, a concept the Angels of Victoria Secret are extremely accustomed to, and the show was an incredible platform for Kirkwood to expand his growing influence in the U.S.

The Canadian singer is on the receiving side of a copyright infringement suit being filed by a fellow Ukrainian recording artist who claims Jepsen has ripped off her song and used it in the infectious hit, ‘Call Me Maybe.’ The Ukrainian popstar has accused Jepsen of borrowing elements from her tune ‘Hunky Santa’ off her album ‘High Speed’ for ‘Call Me Maybe’ sampling her lyrics without asking for permission. The Ukrainian singer is seeking unspecified damages against Jepsen and company, and a court barring the parties from continuing to possess, distribute, sell, advertise or promote ‘Call Me Maybe’ around the world.

Nicholas Ghesquière Takes Fashion Industry by Storm Nicholas Ghesquière, the creative director for Balenciaga has decided to quit the label he has been working with since 1997. Known as one of the biggest talents in fashion, it’s no surprise that fashion insiders and his twitter followers reacted badly to the news. The designer parting ways with Balenciaga is certainly something of a shock. Ghesquière was responsible for making Balenciaga relevant to the new generation. The house has always been known for its sculptural use of volume, nipped in suits and vivid color. Ghesquière gave these set codes a modern tough, managing to make even scuba-wear, ditsy florals, and sci-fi logos become edgy must-have items. Ghesquière has so far remained silent, and claims to only be looking for a new challenge. No names have been put forward for his replacement, and the fashion world is much more interested in working out Ghesquière’s new move.

Watching Horror Movies Burns 200 Calories a Time According to new research, watching a horror film could burn off a whole bar of chocolate. Viewers who put themselves through 90-minutes of adrenaline pumping horror can use up as much as 113 calories, an amount equivalant to a chocolate bar, and close to the amount burned during a half-hour walk. The movie which topped the list of calorie-burners was the 1980 pyshcological thriller, The Shining, with a whopping 184 calories used by the average viewer. Scientists were able to find out the resolts by recording viewers’ heart rates, oxygen intake, and carbon dioxide output. The research revealed that films featuring moments designed to make viewers jump in terror are the best calorie-burners, as they cause the heart rate to sore. It is the release of fast acting adrenaline, produced during short bursts of intense stress which lowers the appetite and increases the Basal Metabolic Rate, which ultimately burns a high level of calories.

HotTopics Donald Trump’s Twitter Rant after Barack Obama Wins US Election Following Obama’s triumph during the US Elections this year, Donald Trump, the billionaire property mogul went into meltdown on twitter. In a series of highly personal attacks, the real estate tycoon criticized the president’s victory as a ‘total sham,’ ‘a travesty,’ and a ‘disaster for democracy.’ The 66 year-old also called for a revolution of the American Political System, including a rally in Washington DC. Trump made the attacks in nine messages to almost 1.9 millions followers, moments after Obama was declared the election winner- other posts were deleted. His comments provoked heated responses from celebrities including Alec Baldwin and Steve Levitan. Throughout the bitter campaign Trump made a number of farcical interventians including a bizarre agreement to donate $5 million to charity should President Obama agree to release his college and passport records. We wonder where this rivalry even stemmed from, and when it will be over.

91 Harvard Students Send Hamburger into Space Five Harvard University students launched ‘Operation Skyfall’ this month as they sent a hamburger soaring 100,000 ft and filmed its adventure in space. Students are well known for their love of fast food, but never has one decided to send a hamburger where no snack has ever gone before- space, that is. The video, uploaded on YouTube by Nyassin14 showed just how they did it. First, the hamburger was coated with lacquer to make sure it has a chance to withstand the elements on its trip to space. Then, it was connected to a camera and GPS system before being attached to a helium balloon. The hamburger made it to an altitude of almost 100,000 feet before the balloon burst, sending the burger back onto Earth. A few days later, the hamburger and camera were found stuck on a tree just outside Boston. Thankfully, both were still intact.

Being Selfish Makes us Happier Researchers have found that being selfish really does make us happy, so long as we can avoid feeling guilty. Although we have been taught the benefits of kindness and altruism, it seems we are happiest when told to pursue our own self-interests. It was found that the key to contentment is feeling that we have no choice but to be selfish. In contrast, the study, carried out by psychologists at the University of Pennsylvania, found that those who constantly choose a selfish path usually have to battle with the guilt afterwards. To no surprise, if we make a decision of self-interest, we have often been taught to feel bad for prioritizing ourselves over others. This frequently means we forego the things we know will make us happy based on our guilty conscious.

Zlatan tops the list A global panel of football voters agreed on one thing: Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s four-goal spree for Sweden against England and his amazing 25-yard overhead kick goal made him the overwhelming choice to top the Associated Press Global 10 football rankings. The Paris Saint-Germain striker collected an astonishing 199 points — out of a possible 200 — from the panel of 20 journalists around the world. Each voter awards 10 points for his choice of the best player and team of the week, falling to one point for 10th place. “It’s hard to look beyond Zlatan after his virtuoso performance and video game ‘golazo’ for Sweden against England,” said Will Tidey of the San Francisco-based Bleacher Report, referring to Ibrahimovic’s overhead kick. Added panelist Christian Schaetzle of German blog derfussballblogger.de: “Four goals in the 4-2 victory over England, plus the bicycle kick from 25 metres for one of the greatest goals of all times.” Tom Timmermann of the St. Louis PostDispatch also had no doubt. “How can you not go with Ibrahimovic?” Timmermann said. “As much as (Lionel) Messi did, I’ll never get another chance to vote for something like that. Messi gets my vote 24 out of 25 weeks. This time, I salute a tremendous effort, and a pretty good game regardless.” Messi, who usually tops the rankings, trailed far behind Ibrahimovic in second place with 138 points despite scoring twice in Barcelona’s 3-1 victory over Real Zaragoza. Liverpool forward Luis Suarez was third with 75 points. Barcelona jumped back into the top spot in team rankings, three points ahead of Italian club Fiorentina, which won praise from panelists after it moved into third place in Serie A with a 4-1 victory over Atalanta — featuring two goals from Alberto Aquilani. Egyptian club Al Ahly received its reward for winning a seventh African Champions League title and was voted into ninth place, even with Arsenal. Al Ahly, the only non-European team in the top 10, has overcome a terrible year in which the club could not play domestic football for nine months because of unrest in Egypt.

HEALTH

Discussing Diabetes Diabetes is usually a lifelong (chronic) disease in which there are high levels of sugar in the blood. In Kuwait, the incidence and prevalence of diabetes is alarmingly high, as Kuwait is one of the top ten countries with high obesity dominance. Kuwait is also ranked third on a global level with high diabetes prevalence, and ranked number one within the MENA region. This phenomenon is largely associated to the radical change in lifestyle among Kuwaitis over the last thirty years. About Diabetes Diabetes can be caused by too little insulin, resistance to insulin, or both. Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas to control blood sugar. People with diabetes have high blood sugar because their bodies cannot move sugar into the fat, liver, and muscle cells to be stored for energy. Type 1 Diabetes: This type of diabetes can occur at any age, but is most often diagnosed in children, teens, or young adults. With this disease, the body makes little or no insulin, thus, daily injections of insulin are needed. Type 2 Diabetes: This type makes up most diabetes cases. It most often occurs during adulthood, however, due to high obesity rates, teens and young adults are now being diagnosed with it. Many who have type 2 diabetes are not aware that they even have it.

Type 1 & 2 Diabetes: Common symptoms for both type 1 and type 2 diabetes include fatigue, unexplained weight loss, excessive thirst and urination, excessive eating, and poor wound healing.

Cause of Diabetes

Medical Treatment for Diabetes

Type 1 Diabetes: Type 1 diabetes is believed to be an autoimmune disease in which the body’s immune system specifically attacks the cells in the pancreas that produce insulin. A predisposition to develop type 1 diabetes may run in family, but genetic causes are more common for type 2 diabetes. Environmental factors may play a role, including common unavoidable viral infections. Type 2 Diabetes: Type 2 diabetes has strong genetic links, meaning that type 2 tends to run in families. The risk factors for developing type 2 diabetes include high blood pressure, obesity, and aging.

The treatment of diabetes is highly individualized, depending on the type of diabetes, whether the patient has other medical problems, his/her age, and the general health of the patient at the time of diagnosis. In order to manage diabetes, patients must meet with a health care professional in order to set goals for lifestyle changes, blood sugar control, and treatment. This would be done by keeping records of blood sugar levels, when and how much insulin or medication were taken, when and what was being eaten, and for how long the patient exercises. First and foremost though, education about diabetes is the core of its treatment.

Symptoms of Diabetes Type 1 Diabetes: This type of diabetes is usually recognized during childhood or early

THETALK / December / 2012

adolescence, and is often associated with an illness or injury. The extra stress can cause diabetic ketoacidosis, which includes nausea and vomiting, dehydration, and often-serious disturbances in blood levels of potassium. Type 2 Diabetes: People with type 2 diabetes can develop hyperglycemic hyperosmolar nonketotic syndrome. Also, if not treated properly, type 2 diabetes can lead to complications such as blindness, kidney failure, heart disease, and nerve damage.

Rio De Janeiro, Brazil: While the rest of the world stays warm during New Years Eve in their embellished coats and boots, it’s practically midsummer in Rio de Janeiro. For this reason, and many others, partygoers shun sweaty indoor clubs and take the part onto the streets instead. Two million visitors visit the beaches of Rio de Janeiro to watch the incredible fireworks display. Copacabana

Beach is the epicenter of all the action on New Years, where celebrations begin at 8pm with live music shows from Brazilian samba to rock bands. During the celebrations, it is customary to wear white as its said to bring you luck. On top of all the fun, many restaurants offer exclusive New Year’s Eve menus especially for all the partygoers.

Prague, Czech Republic:

Prague is very well known for its wild New Years Eve, with its hand-held fireworks free-for-all competing with an official midnight display over the Prague Castle and Vltava River. During Christmas time, markets in Prague are in full swing, with colorful wooden huts selling handicrafts, hot food, and warm drinks in the Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square. Culture lovers can take in the morning or evening performaces from the Czech

Philharmonic Orchestra at Rudolfinum and then attend the New Year’s Eve gala ball at Prague State Opera. Those who like their festivities to be wilder than that can opt for the rowdy bars, clubs, and prime fireworks spots like the Charles Bridge and the town squares. For crowd-controlled celebrations, dinner cruises are handled on the Vltava River with music and dancing going on until the wee hours.

TRAVEL

Who can go wrong in such a simple black dress? Well, that’s probably what Barbora was aiming formaintaining that simplicity. Laetitia has passed this one by far with her choice of shoes, sleeves, and length. This Dolce & Gabanna dress definitely does not flatter Barbora’s body, as her bust does not seem too fitting in the dress. With this dress, one has the freedom to choose any shoe color in the world- Barbora chose black! Blue is so much more bold, and you know how much we love making a statement out of something simple!

These two singers look great as they don a Herve Leger by Max Azria dress on two separate occasions. But who wore it best? Votes show that Kellie Pickler won based on length of the dress, and through her choice of hair and makeup. When wearing a bold texture (fringes are considered bold) opt for a simpler hair-do and more natural makeup. The two chose similar shoes, so not much of a difference there. The length though- Kelli kept the dress at knee length while Brandy chose a shorter look. Let’s reiterate- tone down EVERYTHING when wearing something even slightly bold!
