EDITOR’S LETTER
Dear Trendsetters, Have you ever gotten yourself involved in something that fully consumed you? To a point where all you can think of is that one thing? Day and night, awake or asleep, alone or surrounded? February is the month of love, yet what I am experiencing right now is beyond love! It is obsession! And not towards a person! But a project!! Yet this is more than just a project to me… it is a challenge that is testing everything I ever stood for and believed in. It is stretching me to my limits and beyond. Yet somehow, every day I find the strength to push myself some more. It is incredible how much a human being can bear and produce in one day!! And the end result? A better understanding of who we are. To February, to love and obsession, to experiences that make us rediscover ourselves… Till next issue, Zeina Mokaddam

I have always loved Alexander McQueen, but having consumed myself in his life for a month was definitely pivotal. It has solidified my love for him, in more ways than one. I hope you enjoy the tribute as much as I enjoyed the process of creating it.
We are blessed to be born into a society that does not lack anything materialistic, but it does lack love and compassion. Love is the currency of the soul and only if we invest love we get love in return. Don’t be afraid to take the first step, give a little love to your family, friends and even yourself and see what happens.
THETALK / February / 2013
February, the month in which the world marks ultimate passions. As Saint Valentine has come to represent love and passion after his death so Alexander McQueen became the embodiment of both during his life, a man who also sought to live beyond the boundaries of fashion, and one who left an indelible legacy on those he left behind.
“As a designer, you’ve always got to push yourself forward; you’ve always got to keep up with the trends or make your own trends. That’s what I do.” Alexander McQueen As tragic as his death was to the fashion world, his designs remain as an inspirations to designers and fashion lovers all over the world. He is an ongoing raw energy; fragile and powerful at the same time. This issue is dedicated to him, we hope you enjoy it!

The Alexander McQueen Tribute
THETALK / February / 2013
17
It has been two years since Alexander McQueen took his own life using his favourite brown belt. He has always provoked emotional reactions, and his passing was the most extreme. However, we no longer mourn the loss of a legend; we celebrate all that he has given us. Thus, on the anniversary of the great tragedy, we look back at the life of the sartorial genius.
that the anti-establishment McQueen famously wrote obscenities in tailor’s chalk in the inner lining of a jacket meant for Prince Charles.
“I’m mad in the front of my mind, but business-minded in the back.” - Alexander McQueen
“I was three years old when I started drawing. I did it all my life.” - Alexander McQueen
Lee Alexander McQueen was born in the East End of London in 1969, to a London cabbie father and social science teaching mother along with five siblings. Growing up with a very low income and extensive teasing by schoolmates for his early recognition of his sexual preference, McQueen dropped out of school at the age of sixteen. He began working at Savile Row, a street in London’s Mayfair district, famous for intricate made-to-order men’s suits, first at the tailor shop Anderson and Sheppard, then at nearby Gieves and Hawkes. It was here
Quickly mastering bespoke clothes-making, having made clothes for his three sisters at such a young age, he decided to challenge himself by working with theatrical costume designers Angels and Bermans. The extravagantly dramatic clothing he made whilst working with the famous costumiers, that have twenty-five Oscars to their name, would soon become a staple in his independent work.
“There is a hidden agenda in the fragility of romance.” - Alexander McQueen
McQueen wasted no time and moved on to work alongside Koji Tatsuno; the Japanese
artisan with the reputation of “an unconventional designer, whose clothes are the complex, intelligent constructions of a disciplined subversive mind.” Then at the age of twenty-one, he took the position of Designer’s Assistant to his hero and one of the most successful and admired designers of the 80’s, Italian born and bred Romeo Gigli, in Milan. Gigli also later found profanities by McQueen in the lining of jackets. Having been Gigli’s assistant at the highest time of his career, McQueen, convinced of his contribution to the designer’s success, returned to London and applied to become a tutor in pattern-cutting at Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design.
“I find beauty in the grotesque, like most artists,” McQueen says. “I have to force people to look at things.” His previous experience and ambitious drive led the head of the Masters division to persuade him to enroll as a student. Although lacking in formal qualifications he completed his MA in Fashion
18 social and political side of it incredibly stressful. I’m now in a position where I don’t have to play the game, and I choose not to. I visit. I don’t stay.” – Alexander McQueen
After graduating and the huge sale under his belt, McQueen quickly established his own label and presented a small collection at the Bluebird Garage on King’s Road. That was when he premiered his signature “bumsters” – jeans cut so low that they revealed… well you know! With that statement, the craftsmanship of his designs was still the focal point of his collection.
“Give me time and I’ll give you a revolution.” - Alexander McQueen
Choosing odd and sometimes unbearable locations, putting models through strenuous experiences and using crushed beetles and human hair in his work did not keep anyone from admiring the historical cutting and exquisite detailing; drawing people into his unashamed subversiveness.
“I never look at other people’s work. My mind has to be completely focused on my own illusions.” - Alexander McQueen
Design in1992. True to his eccentric design style, McQueen used Jack the Ripper as inspiration for his Masters graduation collection, naming it “Jack the Ripper Stalks His Victims.” which was sold in its entirety to the influential stylist Isabella Blow who went on to become his muse, patron and unofficial public relations agent. Commenting on his work, Isabella Blow said “He’s a wild bird and I think he makes clothes fly.”
THETALK / February / 2013
“People always ask me why I don’t stick around after the show, but stick around for what? I never go to my after-show party. I’ve been a rock kid. I’ve done all that madness. Things change. I know what kind of world I work in, and I find the
After eight collections presented through remarkably theatrical shows, brutally sharp styling, crafting a reputation of a petulant bad boy, becoming ‘L’Enfant Terrible’ for his frequent outbursts, and taking over fashionable London with his self-titled label, McQueen replaced John Galliano as Designer-in-Chief at Louis Vuitton owned fashion house Givenchy in 1996. He did not wait long before brazenly scorning the label’s founder, Hubert de Givenchy and referring to him as ‘irrelevant’. Two years in McQueen was unhappy in his position at the Givenchy house, labeling it as “crap” and he stated it “constrained his creativity.” Especially after an outpouring of criticism,
19 him to have full creative independence. Once his contract expired, he ended the turbulent relationship between himself and the French design house saying “I treated Givenchy badly. It was just money to me. But there was nothing I could do. The only way it would have worked would have been if they had allowed me to change the whole concept of the house… They never wanted me to do that.”
“Fashion should be a form of escapism, and not a form of imprisonment.” - Alexander McQueen
With the Gucci Group’s financial backing and insightful decision to encourage rather than suppress McQueen’s talents, the label became a giant international brand. He has been named British Fashion Designer of the Year four times, in 1996, 1997, 2001 and 2003. In 2003 he was awarded International Designer of the Year by The Council of Fashion Designers of America and in the same month he was honoured as a Most Excellent Commander of the British Empire for his services to the British fashion industry and in 2004 McQueen was awarded British Menswear Designer of the Year. With all the honours, McQueen was not shy about his low-income background; on the contrary, he was proud of breaking the traditional mold of a successful designer, although his designs and presentations of them were breaking all molds and rules. He once described his shows as his “own living nightmares.” mainly by French journalists, urging him to put aside his uncompromising avant-garde designs to meet with the style of the brand whose most famous muse was Audrey Hepburn. Even though he featured an amputee model with intricately carved wooden legs in one of his runway shows, McQueen felt held back. Having had enough, he dared his employers to fire him in an interview for Arena magazine. Before his contract of four and a half years at Givenchy expired, he sold a 51-percent stake of his own label to rival Gucci. Owning the remaining interest in his company still allowed
“I want people to be afraid of the women I dress.” - Alexander McQueen
With flagship stores in New York, Milan, and London, he was able to buy luxurious homes for himself as well as for his mother, with whom he always had a lovingly close relationship and who helped him tremendously in all the historical research for his fashion shows. His mother, Joyce, interviewed him for The Guardian. She asks, “What is your most terrifying fear?” He replies, “Dying before you.” She says: “Thank you, son. What makes you proud?” He says, “You.”
“There is something sinister, something quite biographical about what I do - but that part is for me. It’s my personal business. I think there is a lot of romance, melancholy. There’s a sadness to it, but there’s romance in sadness. I suppose I am a very melancholy person.” - Alexander McQueen
In 2007 Alexander McQueen lost his muse, patron and dear friend Isabella Blow to suicide with a dose of weed killer. She was buried in a red dress he made for her. Devastated, he began treatment for depression. He dedicated his 2008 Spring/Summer line to Blow, and said that her death “was the most valuable thing I learnt in fashion”.
20 “I oscillate between life and death, happiness and sadness, good and evil.” - Alexander McQueen
In October 2008 Alexander became the first designer to do a line of make up for cosmetic giant MAC. The line, McQueen, was inspired by the 1963 film Cleopatra featuring Elizabeth Taylor with color shades of blue, green and teal all hand picked by Alexander.
“From heaven to hell and back again, life is a funny thing. Beauty can come from the most strangest of places, even the most disgusting places.” - Alexander McQueen
In February 2010, two years after his great friend committed suicide, McQueen was dealt another terrible blow: His mother had died from cancer. Nine days later, on the eve of his mother’s funeral, AlexanderMcQueen took his own life. In December of that same year the British Fashion Council posthumously awarded him for Outstanding Achievement in Fashion Design, saying he has had “an exceptional impact on global fashion.” That he did. With an artist’s ability to inspire and provoke, bestowing on us years of amazing work that was created out of passion and courage of his convictions… Lee Alexander McQueen, we thank you!
“When I’m dead and gone, people will know that the twenty-first century was started” - Alexander McQueen

23 walked into our offices, we knew this was going to be a fun interview. We’ve seen a lot of her work before, her pictures spread across magazines and campaigns, all her designs on our wish lists. Regardless of our bias opinion of her work being absolutely incredible, we were amazed by her all over again when she came in, eyes beaming with delight, the most genuine smile, perfectly polished from head to toe, and with the most loving “hello” that is exactly where she had us. Originally Iranian, Mehtab (called Mia by friends) does it all, literally. She opens up to us about her way to the top, with her fashion line Katayoon, dressing celebrities such as Eva Longoria and with her never-ending interests; she doesn’t plan on stopping any time soon. What brought you to Kuwait? The first time I came to Kuwait was four years ago, when I modeled for Thouq Magazine. That was really good. Then I kept coming and going, doing different shoots for many magazines and newspapers, but now I am selling here. So I’m based in London but now here as well. What got you interested in fashion to begin with? My mum. I grew up seeing fashion all my life; she started making clothes when she was eleven years old. Her family gave her everything to make clothes because my grandmother would go to Italy and India and became very interested in high-end fashion. So every time she would go she would buy fabrics. My mum would take the fabrics and make clothes that are really amazing; they could have been in a store such as YSL. They were very high end. They honored her with a degree. That’s how incredible she is, she was pursuing her Bachelors and as soon as she entered they saw her work and just gave it to her. Then she continued on to do her masters. Her hands are magic, she taught me how to do everything. So you learnt how to make high-end clothing since you were a kid? No when I was that young I would make clothes for my dolls. I loved it though. But I didn’t think I wanted to be a fashion designer, I thought I wanted to be an actress, or a solicitor.
She stops and starts laughing while rolling her eyes at her self. So weird, I know. So I wanted to act and my mum suggested studying fashion, then something clicked in my head and I was like ‘That’s it!” What was your next step? I started university very early. I began when I was sixteen. I studied music sound engineering for my diploma and fashion for my diploma as well, both at the same time in London. So I did five years of fashion, then a year teaching for my masters. I was a professor in Kingston University, I was teaching first years and second years, I was actually the youngest professor ever in the university. And then I started my PhD in dyslexia but I had to stop, I didn’t have any time.
Katayoon
You were working towards a PhD in Dyslexia? Yes! Dyslexia in higher education. I know it has nothing to do with fashion but it is fascinating. I love knowing different things and learning. Especially, if in the future I want to teach in university, I would want to know everything; how to deal with students and how to support them. So is teaching something you have a passion for? No, I have a passion for everything.
Kuwaiti Designer Shurooq Salmeen
*She giggles mischievously. When did you start modeling? When I was sixteen. I was working at a shopping center and this lady stopped me from an agency. I went for it so that it helps me get further into the fashion industry. I competed in the Miss Pageants and I remember I lost to a girl who wanted to be a hairdresser and got so annoyed about it, now I laugh though. I feel great that I have dressed Miss England who won and became Miss United Kingdom, she then went on to compete in the Miss Universe Pageant, I dressed her and she has modeled for me, I feel proud. Tell us about your clothing line Katayoon?

From the photography of the garments to the sewing, I’m very much hands-on. Every picture used around the world, has to be edited by me, I am a perfectionist. I don’t like images to be fake, plastic or anything like that, I like them to be normal, but to a high standard. I make the dresses, I know exactly what I want then I shoot them and move on to the next thing, I don’t wait. I like my clothes to be very classy, chic, lady-like and tight. I want any woman to be able to wear my dresses and feel elegant, powerful and sexy. As it shows in the outfit she was wearing. (Her creation). What inspires you? Katayoon Haute Couture Power, femininity and class. I like some crazy stuff as well, but I want people to see themselves in the clothes. As an artist you can come up with a lot of crazy things, although that can be a distraction from what is wearable and what I want my brand to represent which is class, embracing the woman figure, the beauty. For every collection I make, that is what is behind it. For example Sophia Loren; who actually looks like my mum, those two ladies have always been my idols.

You, her, every woman I meet inspires me, there’s always something, always beauty, and it could be the way you sit or smile. For me personality is so important. What advise would you give a woman who doesn’t know how to dress with power and elegance? Look at magazines, get ideas, but don’t get too engaged in what is IN fashion or listen to how they tell you to look. Magazines are for inspiration and then it is about what suits you, what looks good and makes you feel the best. Mix and match, experiment and put your personality into it. Be confident and wear a smile. If you wear a smile, you are always looking good. Lastly, what does Katayoon mean?

Alexander McQueen - Runway Pushing the boundaries show after show, Alexander McQueen visualizes the concept of his catwalks before creating the clothing. Never one to send a model down the runway easily, McQueen let it rain in his Fall 2004 American Express ‘Black’ Show. In Spring 2005, he positioned every look of his Edwardian collection on a giant chessboard. After photos were released of Kate Moss doing cocaine, which led to her losing major contracts, McQueen wore a t-shirt that said ‘We Love You Kate’ during his Spring 2006 runway walk. That same year in his Fall 2006 show, a puff of white smoke appeared inside an empty glass pyramid and quickly twisted into the shape of Kate Moss; a dreamlike vision – stateof-the-art hologram. With huge support to his loved ones and ground breaking shows, he shows his sharp tailoring, his rich, romantic and meticulous craftsmanship but also proves he is a true performance artist.

McQ - Sarah Burton’s Take-Over Sarah Burton, the creative director of Alexander McQueen, seems to have entered the mind of the great designer. Receiving high honors when she was included on the Queen’s Birthday Honors List for her services to the British fashion industry. Prince Charles gave Burton her OBE (Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire). Also, being chosen by Kate Middleton herself to design her wedding dress and her sister’s dress for the big day, Pippa Middleton’s dress was such a hit, it instantly shot her to stardom. Staying true to McQueen with the avantgarde, but also finding a balance with her own feminine style, we are loving all that Burton has presented so far. Even with his passing, the Alexander McQueen fashion house has their finger on the pulse and they are leading the way and creating new paths in fashion.

Highlighting his vision in six sections, “The Romantic Mind”, featuring some of his oldest work in the early 1990s; “Romantic Gothic and the Cabinet of Curiosities”, featuring his exploration of Victorian Gothic themes; “Romantic Nationalism”, examining Scottish and British identity; “Romantic Exoticism”, examining non-western influences in his designs; “Romantic Primitivism”, featuring natural materials and organic designs; and “Romantic Naturalism”, featuring his attempts to integrate themes of the natural world with technology. All falling under the same theme, dark romance - “There’s something . . . kind of Edgar Allan Poe, kind of deep and kind of melancholic about my collections,” McQueen.

HER STYLE ICON
Bohemian Fantasy Abbey Lee Kershaw
The Australian born stunner is not only a fashion Supermodel she is also a trendsetter. Inspired by bohemianism and grudge, her sweet but tough demure has gotten the world’s attention. A street style favourite, we are always on the look out for what Miss Abbey has conjured up. Whether it is a mix of patterns, textures or colours, there always seems to be a clash in the outfits she wears, we just can’t seem to figure out how she manages to pull it all together and make it look so chic.

Abbey got her first big break in 2004 after
winning the Australian Girlfriend CoverGirl Model Search, she was vaulted into the big time. She scored a 20-page editorial in Vogue Italia’s October 2008 issue, and was signed to walk exclusively for Gucci during her first season. Although not all her catwalk experiences would be so wonderful; she fainted as she walked off the runway at the Alexander McQueen Spring/ Summer ’09 Fashion Show from a combination of the tight corset and small extra-high heels she was wearing, prompting her to boycott any runway shows with dangerous shoes. Using her body as an expression of art, Abbey has six tattoos, ten piercings and counting. “Let’s just say, if I weren’t a model, I’d be a walking collage. I see my body as a blank canvas that’s aching to be decorated; I find it all very fascinating.” there doesn’t seem to be anything that isn’t fascinating about her. She is in a band with her boyfriend called Our Mountain, has a pet lizard, which she named Annie Hall and chooses to buy clothes at markets and vintage stores as oppose to designer brands. Although, in her eight years in the industry she has caused a few stirs, shooting campaigns that erupted fury as if she was making light of suicide and being an appalling example to teens, she stands firm on the jobs she has chosen. “There’s no room for embarrassment or shame, life’s just one big joke. It’s because I have no sense of shame that I’m always willing to give things a go: I’ve ridden horses naked into the sea, I’ve climbed rocks, all kinds of things. That’s why I do this job. I’m always looking for the next door to open.” A perception on life that is not shared by many. Dedicated to modeling, she keeps most of her artistic expression in her music, on canvases and most inspiringly, in her fashion sense. A style that is almost impossible to replicate without looking ridiculous, which makes us love it so much more. With her ethereal beauty she gives a somewhat romantic feel to any look. With an ostensive collection of jackets, skirts and mini dresses, her wardrobe collection seems endless, and her style, effortless.

HIS STYLE ICON
chimerical charm Channing Tatum He stole our hearts in the movie Step-Up, twisted our sides in 21 Jump Street, glamorized stripping in Magic Mike and has been named People’s Sexiest Man Alive 2012. When told of his 2012 title, his reply? “Y’all are messin’ with me!”. With undoubtedly good looks; having Irish, French, German and Native American ancestry, southern hospitality and life experienced humility, we dub thee, our male icon of the month.

Channing Tatum was born in Alabama. Having
ADD from a young age, he fueled it into sports such as football, soccer, track, baseball and martial arts. Voted as “most athletic” in high school, he earned a full football scholarship but decided to drop out and head back home. There, he took on many different jobs to make ends meet. He was a construction worker, an employee at a pet nursery, a perfume salesman in a department store and a mortgage broker. he found a passion for dancing when he first saw a breakdance in real life. that led to him taking on a job as a stripper for eight months at a local nightclub in his hometown. As he practiced dancing at work and on the streets he was discovered by a model scout and went on to model for brands such as Dolce & Gabbana and Abercrombie & Fitch (how fitting). When he starred in a Pepsi commercial, he found that acting was a lot more challenging than modeling and began venturing into the field with small roles until he landed the leading role in Step-Up, where he’d meet his future wife Jenna Dewan. They met in 2006 while filming, got married three years later and are now expecting their first child. Although our dreams of being Mrs.
Channing Tatum are crushed, we’re so happy for the lovely couple. A power team, they have acted alongside each other again in the comedy reunion movie “10 Years” and have begun a production company together. The production company came about when Tatum lost interest in taking on roles unless he can be more hands on and produce the movies himself. He was very much involved in the production of the movie Magic Mike, although not a biopic based on his own experience; he definitely led the set with his expertise. Leading his co-stars in the dance routines and even improvising the jawdropping last dance, he has more than proved his talents as an actor, dancer and producer. Even with all his success he still spends every summer with his Grandparents, just as he did growing up. Having not been sucked in to the Hollywood scene, the self-proclaimed “redneck” is down to earth in his life and in his fashion sense. Suiting it up for the red carpet, he still prefers his white tank tops and sweat pants. Keeping it simple, it holds true to what everyone says about him; from his costars, friends and his wife, “what you see is what you get with Tatum”.

HIS SEASON’S TREND
Cupid’s Bow-Tie Men are now reassessing the bow tie as a fashionable alternative to men’s neckwear. The bow tie is the most classic of all ties, the knot par excellence! After all, it was the first real knot for neckwear, dating back to the 1700’s. The bow tie’s resilience is largely a function of the knot’s simplicity. For all its highs and lows over the centuries, the bow tie is more fashionable now than ever.

We discovered him on instagram. As soon
as we saw his skull sketch we knew we had to interview him for this special issue. We were lucky enough to sit down with the talented Kuwaiti and learn more about his creative process. When did you start? I know it sounds cliché but I have always been sketching and painting, and doing sculptures, painting on walls, on the ground, and painting over my jeans. As far as my art education goes I joined a program when I was 14 years old, from the first day I knew it wasn’t working for me. I stayed for the week but by the end of that week I had to explain to my parents that this is not the way I want to be taught and introduced to art where I sit down and they tell me what to do. So I play around and experiment myself, that is my way of learning. It is about the process, not about the finished product. If you don’t feel like doing something don’t do it. I have canvases that I literally ripped through a knife and thrown out and kicked. It’s all about the emotion, you can’t teach that. What do you use to paint? Anything and everything! One of my paintings was of a girl with big orange hair, I used ink, it is the ink you fill pens with, you’re not meant to paint with it but I really liked the pigments and how they reacted to chip boards, which is a paper wood material. I put the girl on the ground and got these ink tubes and started spilling it all over the sketch then I kept lifting the canvas. I squirted vanilla perfume on it to see how it would react, so if you get close you will see the dots from it dispersed. I use a lot of acrylic I’m a very impatient person. Oils drive me insane, I do use them but acrylic is my mistress, I might shy away into something else but I always get back to acrylics. Then I use hair spray to set all my paintings and sketches, it works like a dream, I cannot pay for a branded setting spray if hairspray does the same job, it works fine, sometimes if I over use it the paper turns yellow and I love it. If you are stuck in a rut and cannot paint anything what do you do? Well I don’t get stuck because I don’t have a schedule of when I need to get a painting done. I draw, sketch or paint when I feel it. I haven’t been in a situation where I have to do something but I don’t know what to do. I am not restricted by deadlines there are no galleries
calling me up saying we need ten paintings pronto, that is not how it is. I love watching foreign films, I am obsessed with the Indian culture, I have a few paintings where I have put my own image of India in. There is this brown girl – I don’t know if that is politically correct? Well you can call her whatever you want. She is yours! Yes she is mine; she is one of my belles. I was listening to this musician, Ravi Shankar, he is a sitar player and he had this one piece that is called Dadra and I was obsessed with it for a month, it was all I could listen to, it is nine minutes long and it was on repeat, I would blast it and I stayed up for a day and a half I was on vacation and I didn’t want to sleep I just wanted to see her, I wanted her face to come out and I wanted her to finish. I literally played that song over and over, so that is why I have called her Dadra, every time I look at her the music starts to play in my head. I think music is such a large influencer, in a context. Passed experiences, new experiences, people I meet, there are people I love, people I hate, there are acquaintances there are people I interact with on a daily basis. Buying something some place, and the cashier pisses me off and that triggers something and a painting pops up. It is weird I feel so pretentious but this is how it works, I guess! Tell us more about your creative process? There is a quote by Picasso, he says, “One starts a painting and then it becomes something quite else”, and that can’t be any truer about my work. That’s how it has been with anything I have done. I start with a feeling and as I work it starts to change. All my paintings have layers and so many under layers of paint. I chip some off and then I add some more. So the canvases can be quite harsh. I love love love when someone looks at my work and touches it, touch the material, get acquainted with the canvas. Every day is a new experience, things change, your mood changes. One day I might want to paint a pretty girl and might be feeling lovey dovey and want to use colours but then that night I go through something, my mood changes and I can’t fake it. I am no longer in that state of mind, I am no longer feeling that, I think I have to react, and that is represented by what I am doing. At the end of the day this is not just a painting or a piece of art. It is part of me.

LOCAL TALENT
A lot of people tell me that a lot of the things you create no one would buy. That is not the point. If it sells it sells and that’s awesome, but if I were to sell something it has to be part of me. I have to put in my emotion as I am feeling it. I can’t sell something that was not really part of me; that needs to be thrown out. If you want to know how I painted it, I will tell you how, if you can do it better, by all means do it better. I’m all for it. It’s not something secretive. What or who else inspires you? Hedi Slimane inspires me, he is now designing for Saint Lauren Paris. I love his photography, he has amazing black and white photography, he is a very well-rounded person in that creative field which is very interesting to me. There is an Indian actress, Rekha, I think she is one of the most beautiful beings I have seen on this planet. I genuinely think that Indian women are the most gorgeous creatures. The scent of vanilla does things to me and that is to say the least, I would fall in love with a complete stranger for five minutes just because they smell like vanilla. My favourite artist for now is Amedeo Modigliani, I am addicted to him right now. He is Italian but lived in Paris, the way he paints for me is mindblowing and so emotional. Do you feel like being an architect has helped you with your art? A lot of people think that, that is completely different, fine they teach us about proportions and colours, we have to take classes in product and interior design, it does help with architecture and you learn the rules, when I paint sometimes I realize that okay if I do this and I put this piece here it will go off balance so I should put it there, and these are the paintings that I usually throw away. I no longer become in that state where I am literally letting go and letting my fingers do what they want to do, I become very conscious of doing what I am doing and I do not like that. *Reminds us of a McQueen quote. “You’ve got to know the rules to break them. That’s what I’m here for, to demolish the rules but to keep the tradition.” I do not want to be a full time artist, I love architecture, that is what I chose to study and that is what I want to do. This may defy this interview but first and foremost I am an architect. However, I make these pieces. If I had the choice of either or, I would choose architecture.
THETALK / February / 2013
If someone said, you either design a building or paint and that would be the last thing you do in the world, which would you choose? I’m shooting myself in the foot for the sake of the interview. I would design a building. I love my paintings, I love them I love the process, it is my world. It is the fact that you draw something on a paper and then you see it, it becomes physical reality, and you put something, it is very theoretical for me, there is this earth that we build on, and from early man, they went into caves but that wasn’t enough then they built skyscrapers that was not enough then they went to the moon, that was not enough. It is that physical aspect of adding to earth, I think is awesome. Driving past something and saying I did that. That stands, from an image in my brain it is now standing. For me, that is heavier than a painting. The scale of it shocks me. So humble, so real. He was very open and honest but still so mysterious. Spending two hours with him we would love to spend a day in the mind of this artist. We cannot wait to see more of his incredible work. Follow Yousef on his Instagram ysfqdart

It can be skinny jeans one day, and dresses and boots another. 63 FRIDA GIANNINI COLLABORATES ON UNIQUE WORLDWIDE WINDOW INSTALLATION WITH RENOWNED JAPANESE MANGA ARTIST
Gucci is pleased to announce a unique collaboration between Creative Director Frida Giannini and renowned Japanese Manga artist, Hirohiko Araki. Inspired by Giannini’s 2013 Cruise Collection, Araki has created an exclusive Manga (Japanese comic strip) story that has brought the windows of Gucci’s worldwide direct store network to life in January and will continue on in February. The unique window display has been visible at 360 Mall in Kuwait from the 8th of January. Commenting on the collaboration Giannini said, “This has without doubt been one of the most enjoyable collaborations I have worked on. The characters that Hirohiko has conceived combine an energy, sensuality and appeal that brings my Cruise collection to life in such a fun and compelling way. I am quite sure his window
installations will stop people in their tracks in cities around the world as they immerse themselves in the fabulous fantasy world he has created.” Entitled ‘Jolyne, Fly High with Gucci’, Araki’s Manga tells the adventure of Jolyne Cujoh, a student who inherits a keepsake from her mother’s Gucci collection. Propelled by the mystery behind her vintage treasure, she embarks on a journey that transcends time. Echoing the sensual color palette and graphic undertones of Giannini’s Cruise collection with symbolic references to the House’s iconic Flora pattern that has been reinterpreted in a number of the collection’s signature pieces, Araki’s extraordinary technique gives a three dimensional effect to his characters. “I have always been fascinated by Italy and it is a great pleasure and honor for me to collaborate
with Gucci, a brand that truly stands for design and tradition in Italy”, Hirohiko Araki said. “Frida’s beautiful Cruise collection with its strong colors and graphic designs set my mind racing the moment she showed it to me. From there the characters and storyline came into being so naturally. It was very stimulating to work together on this project.” The special Araki window installation has rolled out across more than 70 Gucci boutiques around the world and will remain until mid February. A multi-media campaign complements the window installation, including in-store and viral videos and the publication of the full Manga story exclusively in Japan’s Spur magazine and on Gucci’s Facebook page. For more information about Gucci, please visit www.gucci.com and head down to 360 Mall for tis unique visual experience.

Spring/Summer 2013 Women’s Collection The Versace SS2013 women’s collection is inspired by a strong approach to tailoring with a lingerie edge. Manly jackets are worn long, possess a relaxed fit and have soft and delicate lace features cut into them. Little slip dresses in crushed silk and tie-dye tones of orange, blue, and nude are also cut with lace and leather, while others are slashed and held together with criss-cross lacing.
As ever with Versace, the details speak volumes: tiny metal chains hang from belts and mixed metal embellishments shine on shift cocktail dresses. And for those dramatic after dark occasions, evening gowns in tie-dye chiffon fit effortlessly and glisten with silver and gold fringing.

Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey Feud on American Idol American Idol’s two hour premiere presented many talents, the not so talented, and more interestingly, some serious cattiness between Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey. The two divas picked at each other over anything and everything. The bizarre bickering over Nicki’s British accent, Mariah’s concern over beauty lighting and challenging each other over Mean Girls knowledge seems to be just the start of a long season of drama. However, the most shocking part of the premiere was when Nicki Minaj snubbed a contestant because she was wearing the same shade of eye shadow as the star. She admitted: “We have a rivalry and that is why I said no.” Ryan Seacrest commented, saying “These are two very, very spirited, strong individual performers who’ve had a lot of success that aren’t shy about their opinion regardless of what they may be about.” We will definitely stay tuned to see what happens between the two; we can’t help but find it quite hilarious.

Dior Designer Raf Simons to Costume Design for Movie ‘The Body Artist’ Raf Simons will be in charge of designing all the costumes worn by actress Sigourney Weaver and French actress Isabelle Huppert in the upcoming movie The Body Artist. Both the classy beauties were seen front row at the Dior Couture Show held last month in Paris. This won’t be Simons’ first foray into film costume. He received rave reviews for his designs worn by Tilda Swinton in the 2009 movie, I Am Love; earning the movie an Oscar nomination for Best Costume. At the time, he was designing for the house of Jil Sander. But this is Simons’ first film since he took the reins at Dior after John Galliano was dismissed for making anti-Semitic remarks in a Paris bar. Considering the time and pressure involved in designing ready-to-wear and couture for such a prestigious house, it›s impressive that Simons has the time for film costumes. Though, we will have to wait to see his designs since the production of the film has yet to begin. Nevertheless, it is definitely one to look out for.

Be Happy! The Days are Getting Longer The northern half of the globe faces the sun for only a short period in its 24-hour rotation. But now, finally, we are past the days of impinging night and by the beginning of this month we are well into the next stage of the cycle, the North Pole is exposing more and more of its icy face to the rays of light and each day is slightly longer than the last. Added to this, scientists think that when daylight streams into our eyes, it passes a signal to the brain to release more serotonin – the chemical that makes you feel really good – and stop making so much melatonin – a sleep-inducing chemical. So it’s all good news for the months ahead, as the days get ever longer, expect heightened moods, deeper sleep and more energy. Yay!

95 The Uncanny by Berndnaut Smilde Eerie and bemusing, ephemeral and beautiful, demanding a closer look, the photographs form part of a double handed exhibition titled The Uncanny – a title taken from Sigmund Freud’s 1919 essay of the same name – featuring works that provoke questions through their positioning of the banal into unlikely and unconventional situations. Young Dutch artist Berndnaut Smilde’s photographs of clouds in empty spaces stood out to us most. Smilde’s clouds are real, made by controlling moisture and using smoke machines. The results are ravishingly strange images that hover, like the cloud itself, between the prosaic and the mythical, bridging the gap of scientific precision and the beauty of nature itself. The photographs can be found at Ronchini Gallery, London till mid-feb.
Alexander McQueen Menswear London Debut The house of Alexander McQueen marked its return to London with a creepily compelling A/W13 menswear collection; setting the bar in terms of construction and styling. Mixing the two elements of the well-tailored Englishman and that of a horror movie, the collection continued the thread of the brands intellectual fantasy. The hair, styled by Guido Palau, was a masculine take on the 1920s hairstyle; the vampish, high-shine rigid style was complemented by dark, gothic make-up and plastic masks. The traditional Savile Row tailoring and Victorian Gothicism brought a melancholic, cinematic feel to the collection, a regular element of the McQueen aesthetic.

He became the first player to win four consecutive Ballons d’Or; breaking the record he jointly held with former France international and current Uefa president, Michel Platini. “To tell you the truth this is really quite unbelievable,” said the Argentine. “The fourth award that I have had is just too great for words. I would like to recognise my other colleagues from Barcelona. Andres, it has been great to train and play alongside you. I would also like to recognise all of my friends in the Argentina national team, everyone that has worked with me, coaches and staff and my family and my friends. Also my wife and my son. Thank you.” Messi - who polled 41.6% of the votes, with Ronaldo taking 23.68% and Iniesta 10.91% - was favourite to win after surpassing Germany striker Gerd Mueller’s record of 85 goals in a calendar year from 1972. He netted 79 goals for Barcelona, plus another 12 for Argentina, in 69 games for club and country.

David Beckham set for Paris St Germain move The 37-year-old midfielder is expected to be unveiled at a media conference on Thursday and will begin training with the club in the next fortnight. Beckham has been without a club since leaving MLS side LA Galaxy in December and has been training with Arsenal. The former England captain had firm offers from 12 different clubs but has opted for Ligue 1’s big spenders. Despite recently announcing he was to permanently base his family in London, Beckham always said he would make a decision on his next move - based on “footballing reasons”. PSG have spent more than £200m in the last 18 months, and are managed by Carlo Ancelotti - who was in charge of AC Milan during Beckham’s loan spell there. They are also still in this season’s Champions League and will face Spanish side Valencia. The Paris club are currently top of Ligue 1 and already have a squad that includes Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Thiago Silva, Lucas Moura and Ezequiel Lavezzi. Beckham, who made a record 115 outfield appearances for England, was part of the Manchester United side that famously beat Bayern Munich to win the 1999 Champions League. He left Old Trafford for Real Madrid in 2003, before agreeing his move to LA Galaxy in January 2007 and making his debut for the club in August in that year. He attracted criticism from some Galaxy fans after agreeing loan moves to AC Milan in 2009 and 2010 which meant missing some of the MLS season. And he brought an end to his five-and-half-year spell in the United States on 2 December after winning the MLS Cup for the second time. At PSG, Beckham will be hoping to win a league title in a fourth country, having already enjoyed success at Manchester United and Real Madrid in Europe before moving to Major League Soccer. Beckham had been close to joining PSG last January but opted to stay in California for one more season.

Love Your Heart This Valentine’s Day When it comes to your heart health, what you do and what you don’t do can truly make an impact. The great news is you have the power to make your heart both stronger and younger through what you eat, how you exercise, and how you respond to social and environmental stressors.
Know Your Numbers The most important numbers to watch are the big three – cholesterol, blood pressure, and blood sugar. Consider these numbers a stock ticker for a heart-healthy ticker. They tell you how you’re doing and when you need more. When you have them measured, make sure to talk to your doctor about your goal levels and what you can do to get there.
feasts. Try napping; a daytime doze is a stress buster and heart protector. 6 Must-Eat Foods for Your Heart Strawberries: bursting with flavonoids (antioxidants) strawberries and just about any other colorful fruit or veggie can really reduce inflammation. With so many benefits for your skin, hair and nails, these super foods are a heart must.
Pump Your Heart For optimal health, you need to exercise. You need to get your body moving and your heart rate climbing. The way to improve heart function is to sweat, a lot. Sleep Well Skipping sleep increases arterial aging and raises your risk of a heart attack. Getting less than six to eight hours a night will cause you to release less serotonin (the feel-good hormone) in your brain. This leads to over indulging in sugary foods and unhealthy

Rye Bread: along with other whole grain foods are full of heart-protective fiber and magnesium that keep your cholesterol and blood pressure in a healthy range. Whole-grain breads, cereals, brown rice, quinoa, flaxseeds and whole soybeans are a great variety of foods to stock up on. Avocado: full of healthy fat, it is a great food to incorporate in your meal plan or even use it as a substitution. Mixed with olive oil or nut butters, you can spread it on bread, mixed in with salsa as a dip; the options are endless.
Salmon: rich in omega-3 fatty acids, as long as it is not fried, this oily fish lowers your risk of heart attack, stroke, arrhythmia, high triglycerides, arterial plaque buildup, and inflammation in your arteries. Need we say more? Nuts: in the form of healthy nut butters, raw or roasted and eaten as a snack; eating nuts regularly can cut your risk of heart disease by up to 60%. Almonds, pistachios, and especially walnuts are loaded with heart friendly fats and are a great source of vegetable protein. Dark Chocolate: a little dark chocolate a day is great for your heart. It is great for blood circulation and since only a small piece is the recommended dosage, we like to make a treat of it. Throw your shoes off, grab a cup of green tea and unwind with this heart-loving food and create a real moment for yourself and enjoy. What is not to love about your heart? Love it back by taking care of yourself, sleep well, exert your energy in a fun exercise, eat healthy, and most importantly, check with your doctor and keep track of the organ that has given so much.

Restaurant Review The best way to say ‘I love you’ is Angelato!
We have found a real Gem tucked away behind Walk-In Closet at Burj Jassem. This cosy and quiet café is a perfect place to indulge your sweet tooth in the chicest of ways. The deserts resemble those of seven star restaurants; each with so much character and cuteness, it was love at first sight; which makes their cupid logo all the more fitting. Their signature Affogato drink is an experience in itself, espresso and chocolate sauce (fresh from their fountain) on the side for you to choose the ratio you want, are to be poured over pearls of gelato. Then there is their amazing red velvet crepes, the richness cannot be beat, which is a quality that transcends every aspect of Angelato. And for those who love dark chocolate with chili, they have gelatos in that flavor with tiny peppers made of icing on top and macaroons too. They deliver their treats in different ways, whether it is in bulk, gift wrapped or to be served to guests they do it all in an amazing Angelato fashion. From their psychedelic wall to their impeccable service, we are sure this place will become a favourite for many.

Set in New York City in 1894, The Husband List is an American gilded age romantic mystery. It evokes memories of the lavish lifestyles and social expectations of the Vanderbilts and Rockefellers—a time when new money from the Americas married Old World social prestige and privilege. Dresses by Worth, transcontinental ocean voyages, lavish parties, a little intrigue, and a lot of romance await in, The Husband List.
The circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not. Within the black-andwhite striped canvas tents is an utterly unique experience full of breathtaking amazements. It is called Le Cirque des Rêves, and it is only open at night. But behind the scenes, a fierce competition is underway: a duel between two young magicians, Celia and Marco, who have been trained since childhood expressly for this purpose by their mercurial instructors. Unbeknownst to them both, this is a game in which only one can be left standing. Despite the high stakes, Celia and Marco soon tumble headfirst into love, setting off a domino effect of dangerous consequences, and leaving the lives of everyone, from the performers to the patrons, hanging in the balance.

Gemini
Cyan (Opposition): Perspective, love/hate attraction The classic image of "opposites attract” can often be found between signs that oppose each other in the zodiac, but the matter is usually quite complicated. With opposing signs, the similarities are much more evident than people think. The relating is a matter of constant mirroring of each other; complementing but also repelling. Quite obviously, the result can
Taurus
Blue (Trine): Flow, harmony Signs in trine relationship belong to the same element - fire, earth, water or air. This creates a basic similarity in responding to things, and a temperamental affinity that while not identical (and probably because of this) promises much intuitive and sympathetic rapport between the individuals. Lovers as well as friends harmonize without much effort, and tend to find similar things important. It is as if the relationship itself radiates a sense of grace, a cosmic idea of form and well-being. The downside to the trine combination may actually be too much tolerance and not enough drive for individual growth.
be highly productive and affectionate, but also soaked in jealousy and balancing at the edge of a great fall. People showing much opposing planetary energies always have a lot offer to each other, and the best promise of the exchange is heightened perspective and a fated bond of souls. Worst: hatred, intolerance.
Aries
Yellow (Conjunction): Union, stagnation This combination doesn’t need much explanation. People who share the same sign (or Moonsign) have no trouble connecting or understanding one another, but will scarcely thrill each other with the tingle of the unknown either. However, two people sharing different planets or points (especially Sun-Moon or SunAscendant) in the same sign is much more significant. This is always a sign of much instinctive attraction and rewarding compatibility. When it is only identical Sun signs, it depends on other factors in the horoscope and also which signs we are talking about. Some get along easier than others. Often same-sign relationships result in passivity and boredom.
Aries Taurus Gemini Cancer Leo
Red (Square): Struggle, energy Signs in square relationship have an ambivalent attitude towards each other. On the one hand they are very aware of each other’s presence, and frequently communicate very well. Friendships are common between people with squaring planets because of the dynamic nature of the interaction. However, it is often too unstable and provoking to be a pleasant exchange. Especially between lovers, where it can be a heated affair, but at the risk of constant arguing that leaves bitterness and irritation behind. Perhaps it is the interaction that requires the most rearrangement and compromise to work, and for the persons to simply tolerate each other. A successful bond can be strong, however. Purple (Quincunx): Enigma, out-of-sync The “quincunx” relationship between signs is an interesting but problematic combination. Basically it relates signs that share virtually nothing in general. By this testament only, the result could be ships that pass in the night. Still, there is an aura of mystery and fascination with this interaction, as one partner seemingly possesses qualities completely absent in the other, qualities that cannot be expressed at the same time. Some astrologers have associated this angle with a subtle sexual allure, and it seems likely in view of the perplexing attraction that we all sometimes feel strongly without being able to motivate it. Nonetheless, any strong quincunx match requires a great deal of awareness to actually function.
Virgo Libra Scorpio Sagittarius Capricorn Aquarius Pisces
Start from the left at the first sign of the match, and simply follow the row to the right to find sign number two and the symbol that represents the relationship. Then read below the diagram. Green (Sextile): Sympathy, benefit Signs in sextile are of different but compatible elements, and their merging is usually natural and unguarded. In many respects this interchange is the ideal for partnerships in which one side adds just enough of what the other lacks, not least in friendships or professional/platonic exchanges. However, while it brings comfort and security, this is not the most magnetic and exciting match when it comes to romantic/sexual contacts. Still it is a solid foundation to lean against, and when different planets sextile each other between two partners’ horoscope, it›s a sign of great understanding and pleasant attraction. Orange (Semi-sextile): Irritability, learning Semi-sextile signs are positioned next to each other on the zodiac wheel. This creates an uncertain response that is sometimes tinged with competition or jealousy. The point is that bordering signs represent a process of learning and development, of leaving things behind and making progress. For the preceding sign, the partner may seem to display qualities that they themselves lack or would secretly want more of, and hence they might find the partner annoying or arrogant. For the latter sign, the partner seems somewhat veiled in mystery, or appears to cling to attitudes they believe to be unnecessary or obscure. This is all quite abstract, but there is a certain evolving and bonding with the relationship, in itself both mildly disturbing and captivating.
