Starting another school year, students see new and unfamiliar faces in the administration and faculty. Pilar Vazquez, the assistant principal of discipline and attendance, wants to remind students, “I was in high school, too. We all have been.” Along with Vazquez, the campus has two other new faces to welcome— Jason Latham, assistant principal for operations and resources and the head of athletics, and Angela Puma, English teacher. In high school, Vazquez attended an all girls school in Chicago. She said she participated in several clubs on campus, such as the Spanish club. She wanted to get a taste of everything her

school had to offer. Vazquez’s favorite subjects were history and English. Her love for English and her “eccentric” English teacher influenced her future career of becoming an English teacher in Chicago. Before coming to this campus, Vasquez served as the dean at Glendale High School. “I had the very best teacher in the whole wide world. He was crazy and eccentric. He was just fun; he made the class come to life,” Vazquez said. Attending school in Wyoming, Latham participated in golf on his high school team. He was also very active in marching and jazz band. Later, he worked as the band/orchestra instructor at Sunnyslope and Apollo High School. Last year, he served as the dean

at Moon Valley High School. A member of her school swim team, Puma said her experiences in swim were the best part of high school. “I made a lot of good friends. We did a lot of crazy things. We would toilet paper the boys swim team houses and have sleepovers on the weekends,” says Puma. Her favorite subject was English. This influenced her past and present career. She used to teach English in the Phoenix Elementary School District. She said she has enjoyed the move from teaching English to middle school students to juniors in high school. All three faculty and administrative members agree that their transition has been great so far, and they all look forward to meeting the students.
