WAY MAKER 2018 Annual Report
MESSAGE FROM THE CEO
“Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.’ ” - John 14:6
T
hank you for almost 70 years of supporting God’s efforts to transform lives to end homelessness one person at a time. Since 1949, volunteers and donors like you have partnered with Union Gospel Mission Dallas to help the most vulnerable in our community to have food, shelter, clothing, transportation and much more. Because of your support, people are being transformed by the Gospel, receiving job training, obtaining GED’s or high school diplomas, being reconciled to their family and friends, receiving ongoing counseling for various addictions, and receiving help for mental health issues. God has made a way in the last 70 years. I am very excited to serve the Mission and be a part of our efforts to help homeless men, women, and children live victoriously. Daily, I am blessed to see how people find rest and hope for a better future. Our discipleship numbers are still at an all-time high, and record numbers of people continue to rededicate their lives to Jesus. Exciting new partnerships with organizations, related food services and training are on the horizon, and God is continuing to prove that He is a “way maker.” In John 14:6, Jesus tells us that He is the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Him. In life, we all have tried it “our way” and found out that things did not work out as well as we had hoped. Many of us have also attempted to define our own truth. We soon discovered that God’s truth is the only truth. Our logic eventually breaks down, and we must return

to God to solve life’s problems. And finally, Jesus gives us real, abundant life. Without Christ, we were just living. Now, we have abundant life! Please continue to pray with us as we seek God’s face in doing even greater things, with your help, to grow God’s kingdom. Thanks for all that you do to support us. We value and appreciate every volunteer and donor. Your kind words of encouragement uplift us daily and give us strength to do God’s work of transforming lives to end homelessness one person at a time. In His Service,

Life Skills and Chapel - Our staff and volunteers address a variety of areas, such as education, financial management, chronic illness education, and nutrition, while also focusing on the comprehensive needs of an individual. We understand that our clients first need a safe place to sleep and hot meals. The Center of Hope provides a 90-day emergency shelter program for women and children (under the age of 17) to sleep, eat a hot meal, receive clothing and hygiene products, as well as access to warm showers.
UGM DALLAS PROGRAMS
Education In the 21st century, a lack of computer skills severely limits a person’s ability to qualify for most jobs. All of our shelters have on-site learning centers where clients can learn computer skills, basic math and reading, how to use an online job bank, and computer literacy work.
home that has been converted to accommodate four disciples (each with their own bedroom). The Cimarron Apartments in East Dallas is a 43-unit complex combining one and two-bedroom units. The Riverpoint Apartments, in North Lake Highlands, is a 34-unit complex.
Childcare and Development The Crystal Child Development Center (CDC) is an on-site, state licensed child care center for children from birth to kindergarten. Children in the CDC learn about the abundance of God’s love through our Christian-based curriculum. Bible stories and basic skills, such as recognizing colors, shapes, letters and numbers, are taught daily. Preschoolers learn counting, writing letters, and how to cooperate and play with others. Discipleship Our shelters offer long-term, self-paced, faith-based, rehabilitation programs called Discipleship. These programs are designed to help people end their personal struggles with homelessness, first by establishing and nurturing a relationship with Jesus Christ, then by learning the skills necessary to re-enter society and live an independent life. This process includes graduating from the Mission’s Learning Center, obtaining a job and living in a transitional living facility. Prior to graduation from the program, each disciple must be involved with a local church, have a savings account, hold a job, and be living independently. Transitional Housing UGM owns and manages three transitional living sites. Two are apartment complexes and one is a residential
Medical Care Each of our two main shelters, Center of Hope and Calvert Place, have an on-site, free medical clinic, which is available to both clients and disciples. The clinics are under the supervision of UT Southwestern Medical School. Both clinics offer our residents basic and preventative medical care as well as medical education. We have recently added dentistry to the program. Job Readiness Training and Job Placement UGM Dallas offers training in several industries. Recently, two disciples from Calvert Place were accepted to Pharmacy Technician Training School.

DISCIPLESHIP PROGRAM ESTHER’S STORY
E
sther came to the US from Africa for a job in Michigan. A victim of domestic violence and far away from any family, Esther and her child soon became homeless. A friend in Africa told her about shelters in the US for those trying to escape domestic violence. She went to Getaway Shelter who then referred her to UGM Dallas.

After coming to UGM Dallas, Esther saw a whole new world open up to her. Having an outgoing and friendly personality, she quickly made friends, something she was unable to do in her relationship because she was kept shut in and isolated from the world. “Here I can have freedom. I look forward to knowing the Lord every day and what He wants me to do,” Esther said. Esther now has a job and hopes to save enough money to get her own apartment. 466 Esther has regained confidence in herself and will be participating in this year’s Project Vintage Runway on May 9, 2019. 275 500

DISCIPLESHIP PROGRAM DON’S STORY
D
on’s story is a beautiful before and after picture of what Christ does in someone’s life. When he was released after seven years in prison, Don immediately went back to doing what he knew - drugs. Doing drugs 24/7 almost killed him. In a year and a half, Don lost 8 family members to death including his son and his mother. Don was in a very dark place. But Jesus is the light. Ephesians 5:8 says, “For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light.” A friend shared with Don about Pastor Charles, UGM Discipleship Program Chaplain, and something told him he had to go. “I am learning to let go of my past. Staying on the ‘right’ path is tough, but I have a dream 2500 of someday owning my own A/C and refrigeration company,” Don shared. 2000 Don is now employed at Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) and was recently promoted 1500 to a supervisor position. He has purchased his own vehicle, is finishing his GED and is moving into transitional housing at Riverpoint. He 1000 hopes to find a local church soon where he can continue to grow in his spiritual walk. 500 Fund a Disciple for a Day: $40.69
Includes shelter, meals, chapel service, life skills, clothing, vocational training, Bible classes, case management, coaching, transportation, and Discipleship supplies.

DISCIPLESHIP PROGRAM Second chances. We all need them. Dale knew this was his second chance and he was not going to waste it. After spending time in jail, Dale crossed the bridge and entered the UGM Dallas Discipleship Program with a desire to learn more about God. Drug use had brought him to the end of himself and he recognized the need for change. Quickly after entering the discipleship program, Dale learned that the staff at UGM sincerely loved him and wanted him to succeed in following Jesus. Dale now works at the UGM Superstore as he serves the Lord and others. He advises young people to make good choices and find positive activities and interests. Upon graduation from the program, he plans to find a church home where he can continue to serve and grow closer to the Lord.
VETERANS PROGRAM Union Gospel Mission Dallas has two grants and one contract under the Veteran Administration department. The Health Care for Homeless Veterans (HCHV) program provides emergency housing to the homeless who, usually, have long histories of homelessness. This program provides short-term (maximum 90 days) emergency housing for Veterans who are homeless and in need of temporary housing while they work toward independence and find permanent housing and stable employment. The HCHV Emergency Housing Program has 14 beds available. The other programs are operated under the VA Per Diem Only grant. UGM provides Low Demand and Bridge Housing. The Low Demand program is designed to assist veterans with mental health and substance use issues who’ve had little or no success in other treatment environments. The goal of the program is to assist these men in obtaining suitable housing, using the “Housing First” model as an approach to care. Housing First has a Low Barrier and Low Expectation approach which focuses on housing as one mean of the stabilization process. Once Housing stabilization has occurred this improves the veterans’ chances of stabilizing in other areas of need. This is a six month program that provides: Room, Board, Case Management, Addiction Education, Relapse Prevention, Crisis Stabilization, Transportation and Clothing Assistance as well as housing referrals. 8

VINTAGE TEN The concept for Vintage Ten developed from the idea that ‘feeling good about what you are wearing can build confidence.’ UGM Dallas partnered with The Time Group to create a place where single moms, teachers, and students on a budget can shop for affordable, stylish name brand fashions priced at $20 or less and feel like a million dollars. The mission of Vintage Ten is to create long term relationships with customers and donors. Project Vintage Runway was created as a fundraising and mentoring opportunity for the ladies at UGM Dallas Center of Hope Women and Children’s Shelter. Popular designers customize outfits using vintage items, and the ladies from the shelter model the fashions, which help build confidence and self-esteem. Visit projectvintagerunway.com for details.
SUPERSTORE Union Gospel Mission Superstore is an exciting part of the services we offer, as the store provides a revenue source, in addition to the generous financial and gift-in-kind donations given by our community partners and investors. A portion of Union Gospel Mission Dallas’ operating funds are generated from its 20,000-square foot thrift store. The Superstore also offers an avenue for the Mission to provide furniture and other essentials for clients moving into permanent housing and a low-cost shopping facility for those seeking bargains. The store sells furniture, home decor items, clothing, baby items, books, housewares and shoes, among other things. The stock is completely made up of merchandise that is generously donated. The store is located at 2305 West Airport Freeway in Irving, TX behind CVS Pharmacy. 2018 ANNUAL REPORT
