MESSAGE FROM THE CEO

We want to thank all our donors and supporters for your efforts and sacrifices you’ve made in the last year. This is a vote of confidence for us on a daily basis as we come to UGM Dallas to serve as your hands and feet and show people the love of Christ.

Because of your contributions we made it through the hardships of the COVID-19 pandemic and all the financial and social uncertainties that are taking place in our society. You are our heroes and motivate us to serve others with excellence.

In 2022, we had the opportunity to see the fruits of our ministry. Many Disciples graduated from the program and shared their testimony of overcoming immense obstacles to get back on their feet and live lives of independence. We were also able to begin three building campaigns to benefit our residents.

At UGM Dallas, we realize that the true heroes that allow us to minister to these precious woman, children and men are our faithful donors, volunteers, supporters, and partners. Their heart for the homeless and desire to reach those who are broken and hurting with the hope of the gospel encourages us daily.

OUR MISSION

We provide God’s hope to the hungry, homeless, hurting, and helpless people in Dallas. We collaborate with others to provide food, shelter, clothing, transportation, job readiness training, counseling, mental and physical healthcare, temporary and affordable housing to those in need.

We offer shelter to more than 450 individuals on a regular night and an additional 50 during inclement weather.

We provide a hot, nutritious meal, as well as nutritional training.

Each guest receives an assessment to determine how we can best meet their needs.

TRANSFORMED LIVES

Kelsey came to UGM Dallas and immediately joined the Discipleship Program. Kelsey states, “The Discipleship Program works, but you’ve got to work the program and allow God to work through you.” Kelsey has put in that work. He completed his training assignments, consisting of bible study and life skill classes, and began working under the leadership of our foodservices director. Now, Kelsey is employed as the manager of the UGM Dallas men’s shelter kitchen. Kelsey received a donated truck and has transitioned to independent living.

“The donations have been a blessing to me. There are many people that feel like they don’t have anyone to support them. Men, women, and children need a place like this.”

Tiffany came to UGM Dallas straight from the hospital after attempting to take her life. She had given up on God. She woke up to no family, no place to go and her belongings on the curb after being evicted. Tiffany found her way to UGM Dallas where she was welcomed and nurtured by the staff and residents who were ready to help her get back on her feet. During her time at UGM Dallas, Tiffany realized God had not given up on her. She began to grow once again in her walk with Jesus.

Tiffany is employed full-time and has received 2 promotions. “I now have my own department at the store - something I never would have dreamt was possible. I would encourage anyone who is struggling to seek help at UGM Dallas,” stated Tiffany. “This is a great place to give your time as a volunteer or to give money to support them.”

Warren is an important part of our Veterans Program at UGM Dallas. He came to the Mission, went through the Discipleship Program and is now a Supervisor in the Intake Department. Like many Veterans, Warren needed a place to get off the streets and find the resources to help him get back on his feet.

“As a Marine who served for 4 years, I am proud to be a part of the Veterans group at UGM Dallas. I have grown spiritually during my time here and enjoy working for the Mission. I now serve as the Intake Supervisor helping assign beds for the night and making sure our clients have clothing.”

BATHROOM RENOVATION

During the COVID-19 pandemic, UGM Dallas housed the homeless 24/7. The amount of use on the bathroom facilities at Calvert Men’s Shelter created the need for renovation. UGM Dallas made updates to this area of our facility. The updates allow the homeless men to enjoy a hot shower and clean up.

TRANSFORMED SPACES

STEPUP BEDS

Another update to Calvert Men’s Shelter is the purchase and installation of StepUP beds. The beds provide therapeutic support for our Veterans, elderly and disabled clients. In addition, the beds include a space where they can place their belongings for the evening.

SECURITY GATE RENOVATION

UGM Dallas recently had a security gate updated to ensure the safety of the women, children and staff at Center of Hope Women & Children’s Shelter.

Thanks to the generous support of our donors, UGM Dallas has been able to not only transform lives but also transform some of the spaces within our facility.

VETERANS PROGRAM

UGM Dallas feels a great responsibility to honor the men and women who have served our great nation and then find themselves homeless. Partnering with the Veterans Administration Department, UGM provides short-term emergency housing for Veterans as they seek stable employment, permanent housing and work toward independence.

UGM Dallas houses 30-40 veterans at any given time. To support the VA Per Diem Program, UGM offers crisis stabilization, substance abuse counseling, case management, transportation and clothing assistance and faith-based counseling upon request.

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT

Tom Duke has been volunteering at UGM Dallas since 2001. When asked how UGM Dallas is helping the community, Mr. Duke replied,

“I was deeply impressed by the commitment of Union Gospel Mission to proclaim the gospel to homeless men, to men who had experienced tragedy and crisis. They couple the preaching of the gospel with practical, effective help. For over 20 years, I have seen first-hand, the Christ-centered commitment of Union Gospel Mission to serve the Dallas community. The one constant has been the priority the gospel and demonstrating the love of Christ.”

Mr. Duke encourages others to get involved as an opportunity “to pour out sacrificially to people as part of this Christ-centered ministry.” Volunteer opportunities at The Mission include food service, chapel services, mentoring, job skills training, and tutoring.

PROJECT VINTAGE RUNWAY BOUTIQUE

Project Vintage Runway continued to receive donations and serve clientele in 2022 as an upscale resale boutique. While proceeds from sales benefit UGM Dallas shelters, the retail store also provides a job training opportunity for Discipleship graduates. Experience gained while working at the store enables graduates to build their resume while learning valuable skills. The boutique also had the opportunity to provide professional outfits for women from the Center of Hope Women & Children’s Shelter who were interviewing for a job.

PROJECT VINTAGE RUNWAY FASHION SHOW

During the annual Project Vintage Fashion Show, UGM Dallas celebrated the success stories of recent program graduates who served as models.

“The Project Vintage Runway Fashion Show is always a time of celebration as we share the success stories of our graduates and all they have overcome. It gives graduates a chance to shine on the runway and display their newfound self-confidence,” noted Bruce Butler, CEO of UGM Dallas. “The designers did a great job this year of incorporating used electronics into the designs. The parallels were a beautiful reminder of the transformation that takes place in the lives of the homeless just as the old electronics are transformed into something new.”

Designers were challenged to incorporate recycled materials into their designs to help launch Recycling for the Homeless. Attendees brought used electronics to be recycled as their entry ticket to the fashion show. Project Vintage Runway boutique will serve as a collection point for used electronic devices, which includes outdated smartphones, tablets, laptops, and desktop computers. A portion of the proceeds from the recovered materials goes to support the UGM Dallas homeless shelters.

COMMUNITY AWARENESS

Throughout the year, UGM Dallas participated in community events as well as hosting annual fundraising events. These are great opportunities to support the work being done at UGM Dallas to end homelessness.

WILLIAM M. THOMPSON MEMORIAL GOLF CLASSIC

The 5th Annual William M. Thompson Golf Classic brought together business supporters, Veterans, local athletes and UGM Dallas donors to honor the memory of Brother “Bill” Thompson.

NORTH TEXAS GIVING DAY

North Texas Giving Day is an annual oneday, online giving event. Every year we have incredible success thanks to our donors and a generous matched giving donation. In 2022, Pastor Bruce and his team spent the night on the roof to bring awareness to the issue of homelessness and raise funds.

TACKLE HOMELESSNESS

UGM Dallas and Shelter KC engaged in a friendly competition as the Dallas Cowboys took on the Kansas City Chiefs. Donors for each shelter were encouraged to help support their team and their shelter.

GIVING TUESDAY

Giving Tuesday is an online giving event that follows Black Friday every year. It is a great opportunity to kick off holiday giving.

VETERANS DINNER

UGM Dallas not only focused on Veterans but also others in our community who play a supportive role. UGM Dallas was a part of the Defenders of Freedom Dinner to provide emergency financial assistance to post 9/11 Veterans. Twelve Veterans residing at Calvert Men’s Shelter were invited to the dinner.

FREEDOM RUN

UGM Dallas also partnered with The Freedom Run to help raise money for the Dallas Assist the Officer Foundation (ATO) in honor of Dallas’ first responders and police officers. Residents and staff completed the race and UGM Dallas set up a booth to distribute information on Veteran support programs available at the shelter.

UP & RUNNING AGAIN

In addition, UGM Dallas Disciples and team members participated in the Up & Running Again program that helps train homeless individuals to complete half marathons. This was a catalyst to incorporating more healthy living physically into our programming.
