MYTV USER’S GUIDE RANDOLPH COMMUNICATIONS 336.879.5684 or 336.622.7900

Welcome to Randolph Communications When Randolph Telephone Membership Corporation was formed on May 13, 1954, its purpose was to bring telephone service to the rural communities when larger companies would not invest. It was on June 1, 1957 that the first telephone call was placed to Raleigh, NC from the Grange Hall in Farmer, NC. Today, Randolph Communications serves eight exchanges in seven different counties in the central, rural communities of North Carolina that include Alamance, Chatham, Davidson, Guilford, Montgomery, Moore and Randolph. What started over 60 years ago has evolved into a communications company offering not just traditional phone service, but other highly demanded services such as high-speed internet, IPTV, 4G Wireless, Camera Surveillance, Computer Services, Business Networking and most importantly fiber to the home. While the services and name may have changed the way we do business has not. We want to be the one-stop-shop, and we are. Our new name portrays our vast array of services we offer. We take pride in bringing top of the line customer service and the best technology available to our customers. That will always stay the same.

Troubleshooting

Why Will My Set Top Box Not Come On? Your set-top box may be updating. Wait a few minutes and try it again. Be sure the power cord is plugged in and that the outlet is working. Also, try turning on the set-top box manually by pushing the power button on the front instead of using your remote (batteries in the remote may be dead).

What Should I Do if My Set Top Box is Not Working Correctly?

Verify the TV is on. Be sure the STB power is on. Confirm the correct input is selected. Your correct input setting information is located on the MyTV Service Commitment and Receipt of Terms of Service Form in your Welcome Kit.

How Do I Reboot (Power Cycle) the MyTV Set Top Box? The preferred method of Power Cycling your set-top box is to unplug your STB from the wall outlet, wait 30 seconds, and plug it back in. This will reboot your STB. Television programming will return to the screen and the correct time will appear on the set-top box once the boot completes. If these steps do not correct the problem, please contact us for customer assistance at 611, 879-5681, or 622-5681.

What Should I Do if There is No Video Picture on the TV Screen?

Be sure your TV and STB are on. Verify the correct input source is selected. If your TV or STB is connected to a home theater system, be sure it is powered on as well. Also, tighten any loose cables by hand.

72

Troubleshooting Why Do I See Snow on my TV and No Picture? You may have mistakenly turned the TV channel on the TV tuner itself. To correct it, hit the Input button on your remote and verify it is set to the correct input. (If you have a coaxial cable connection from your STB to your TV, be sure that your TV is tuned to Channel 3 or 4. Also, reconnect any loose cables by hand.) Your input setting should be indicated on the MyTV Service Commitment and Receipt of Terms of Service Form in your Welcome Kit.

Why Can I See a Picture, but Not Hear Any Sound? First, press the MUTE button on the remote to be sure MUTE is off. Then, try turning up the volume. If you are still experiencing problems, verify that all cables attached to the AUDIO INPUT JACKS on the back of your set-top box and your TV or home theater system have been properly attached and secured.

Why Do I Have a Picture, but No Info Bar? Power cycle your set top box. Please note, it may take a few minutes for the software to update and the Guide to become operational again.

What Should I Do If My TV Guide is Frozen? If this occurs, power cycle your set top box. Please note, it may take a few minutes for the software to update and the Guide to become operational again.

Will My Set Top Box Work if I lose Power? Yes! But you must connect your box and television to a generator.

What Should I Do if I Am Not Getting a Signal? Press the TV button near the top of the remote. Then, press the Input button on your remote or television.

Frequently Asked Questions What Do the Following Abbreviations Stand For? STB- Set Top Box EPG- Electronic Programming Guide

LED-Light Emitting Diode DVR-Digital Video Recorder

Do I Need a Digital TV Set to Get MyTV?

No. Please consult the Remote Control Guide located in the front of your User Guide for instructions on how to program the remote with compatible equipment.

Will Any Set Top Box Work with MyTV?

No. The MyTV signal is encrypted and required our authorized settop boxes to receive the programming we provide.

What are Simultaneous Streams?

MyTV requires a large amount of bandwidth. As technology evolves, we can overcome some of these limitations. Until then, each home is limited in the amount of bandwidth that can physically be delivered. High Definition (HD) programming requires even more bandwidth than Standard Definition (SD). While multiple TVs can be connected to the MyTV service, there is a limit to how many set-top boxes can display programming at the same time. These are known as programming streams. How close the wire center is to your home will determine how many TVs can receive programming at the same time - known as simultaneous streams. An SD channel equals one stream, HD three streams, MyDVR SD one stream, and MyDVR HD three streams. Previously recorded programs do not take up a stream. If you notice freezing or tiling, check to see if all other set-top boxes throughout your home are off. If not, turn them off one by one to see if that improves the appearance.

What Should I Do if I’m Going to Move?

Two weeks before you move, contact us to determine if you can take your services to your new location. If you will be leaving our service area, return all equipment to Randolph Communications.

74

Frequently Asked Questions How Many TV Sets Can I Connect to MyTV? We have two types of MyTV service based on how far you are located from the nearest wire center. The options you have for how many simultaneous streams you can watch at the same time are outlined below. Type A- Wire center is less than 4,500 feet from the service location, you can watch four streams at the same time. Type B- Wire center is 4,501 to 9,000 feet from the service location, you can watch three streams at the same time. If you notice tiling or poor picture quality, try turning off each set-top box one by one to see if that alleviates the issue. If there is no improvement or to learn more about the streaming limitations, contact our technical support at 611 from your Randolph Communications phone.

Why Are There Black Lines On My HDTV? The reason for this is because the image you want to watch isn’t the same size as the TV. There are two common TV shapes, full screen and wide screen. The term used to describe TV screen shape is “aspect ratio.” Conventional TVs and some small LCD HDTVs have a 4:3 aspect ratio and wide screen HDTVs have a 16:9 ratio. This means for every 4 inches of height, there’s 3 inches of width. It’s the difference in shape between those two ratios that can result in a “pillar boxed” picture - one with black columns standing to the left and right of the image. Depending on your TV, those pillared lines can only be fixed if you force your TV to get ride of the bars through the TV zoom feature, but understand, when employed it will crop your image, which means you’ll be chopping off the sides to fill us the top and bottom.
