Hans Rueffert, owner and chef of the Woodbridge Inn in Jasper, GA is HealthSmart's featured guest. Known as The Chef Without a Stomach, Hans just finished participating in the first season of The Next Food Network Star in 2005 when diagnosed with stomach cancer. The World is Open for Business To be successful today, businesses must work hard, plan diligently, and as some would say, be touched with a bit of luck. There is an old saying that the definition of luck is when preparation meets opportunity. Hopefully as the recession continues to subside, businesses will have more opportunities. Many businesses used the recession as an exercise to lean up their operation and staff themselves with the right team. Times have changed and the methods to prepare ourselves for future opportunities have changed as well. Now is the perfect time for companies to evaluate markets outside of the norm and remember that our products and services are usually in demand by customers outside of our current markets. For most businesses, having a slightly more diverse product offering or geographic customer base can rePerry Barnett, CPA Ruston duce the risk of local market fluctuations. One of the first steps to determine Chairman, Greater Hall expanded market opportunities is to assess any potential competition for Chamber of Commerce these products or territories. For many this is the easy step. The next step is to evaluate the company’s capacity to fill this potential new business opportunity, and this is a step where many companies stop. I have not encountered a company yet that completed this feasibility analysis and determined that the company was 100% prepared to expand. We often forget that many of our products or services are exportable to any part of the U.S. and anywhere in the world. This may be hard to imagine for a local business such as a small coffee or gift shop. When we travel, we visit places that we enjoyed and bring back fond memories. It is surprising how many of people will continually purchase a product or a service – something that reminds them of a happy experience in their lives. I know people that remember a fun trip to Chicago and will periodically order a pizza shipped in dry ice! Good food and hospitality can be shipped anywhere in the world.

To take this a step further many businesses should consider international opportunities as well. This could mean selling U.S. goods and services overseas, selling U.S. goods and services to foreign companies investing in the U.S., or even purchasing goods in one country and selling to customers in another country. For many of us this sounds attractive, however we may not know where to start. This is one of many ways the Greater Hall Chamber of Commerce can serve us best. Our Chamber is connected with state and federal agencies that focus on U.S. companies planning to expand their markets internationally. The U.S. Department of Commerce and its affiliate agencies have an abundance of market analysis available by country, by product and by industry.

For example, according to this analysis, due to the growth of developing countries, construction is expected to be one of the more dynamic sectors in the global economy. Some of the projected top global demand will be for products such as HVAC, plumbing, glass, doors and windows. Also of note for U.S. e-commerce businesses – in Germany the top two e-commerce sights are Amazon and eBay, with high demand for books, magazines, clothes and shoes. Be sure to mark your calendar and attend the Chamber's upcoming Small Business Resource Fair on Tuesday, September 12 from 7:45-10:00 am at Featherbone Communiversity Manufacturing Development Center in Gainesville. The event features the best local, free resources to help your business thrive and grow. Keynote Speaker Bill Carlson with Infogroup will discuss his company's program called ReferenceUSA, a free target marketing database, and he will give tips on how to use the database program to boost sales and marketing strategies. In addition, representatives and professionals will be on hand to discuss free and low cost business resources from government contracting opportunities to assistance with tax issues and SBA financing. Email: alewis@ghcc.com When I think of the large amounts of specific data available for global business, I am reminded of those famous words from famous bank robber Willie Sutton. When asked why he robbed banks, he answered, “because that is where the money is.” My point is this: There is a lot of information and assistance available for companies to develop a specific plan for global markets where their products and services can experience the highest demand. There is an entire world of opportunities out there, and the world is open for business.

As part of the 11th Annual HealthSmart Expo, the Greater Hall Chamber is conducting its annual survey for “Most Fit Company Awards” and judging criteria includes wellness, nutrition and fitness opportunities provided for employees. Most Fit Company Awards are presented in three company size categories: Large (251+ employees), Medium (51-250 employees) and Small (50 or less employees), and will be presented at the HealthSmart Breakfast with special guest speaker and Food Network Star Chef Hans Rueffert on October 11 at 7:30 am at the Gainesville Civic Center.

• The Lake Lanier Olympic Park (LLOP) named Robyn Lynch as venue manager. Lynch's background is in fund raising, community and government relations and event planning. LLOP brings an estimated 100,000 visitors each year and is undergoing a series of renovations. The first phase, completed last year, included improvements to the tower and offices. Phase 2 will be improvements to park bathrooms and the boathouse.
