Importance of Work Based Learning
2
The initiatives of the Greater Hall Workforce Development Task Force (WDTF), founded in 2015, are vital to the state of our current and future economy. These programs, developed through volunteer leadership, participating industries, educators and business professionals, are shaping the future of our community. Industry leaders like Greg Vitek, IMS Gear Georgia, chair of the Workforce Development Task Force, and Bill Hall, Murray Plastics, chair of the Vision 2030 Education Consortium, are working with others to make great strides in linking the energy of our youth with local industries and businesses to grow a workforce for today and tomorrow. Last March, a Workforce Development Recognition Luncheon was held with 70 attendees and a program featuring area employers, a labor attorney and a legislative update to ensure employers know their options for their Perry Barnett, CPA sustainable workforce strategy. Since that time, the Greater Hall ChamRushton Chairman, Greater Hall ber's Existing Industry Division led by Vice President Shelley Davis, has Chamber of Commerce been hard at work forming partnerships and alliances with area work based learning coordinators, educators, Chamber Industry Roundtable members, the Georgia Mountain’s Regional Commission and many others. As of January 2018, 40 students representing eight high schools are employed in Work Based Learning at 17 Manufacturers in Gainesville Hall County: American Yazaki Corporation, Gibson Dental Designs, IMS Gear Georgia, King's Hawaiian, Kipper Tool Company, Kubota Manufacturing, Mencom Corporation, MP Equipment, Murray Plastics, PERFORMANCE Foodservice, Poly Enterprises, PPG Industries, SKF USA, Tower Sealants, Tribe Transportation, ZF Gainesville and ZF-TRW Automotive. In February, Manufacturing Job Shadow Days included 90 high school sophomores touring nine area manufacturers for the purpose of encouraging work based learning during their final two years of high school. To develop more work based learning partnerships, the WDTF is creating a video focusing on how students can take advantage of apprenticeships during high school to secure a career in many fields. Most recently, the Greater Hall Chamber and Vision 2030 facilitated a Career Path Fair for 500 students, 7th graders from eight area schools, at the University of North Georgia Gainesville. Some 50 employers presented career path options for the students. See more on page 4.
