Working to create a skilled workforce Gainesville Hall-County continues to lead as Georgia’s most dynamic and vibrant economic region. Home to more than 300 manufacturing and processing concerns and 49 international companies, our community offers a sound economic base for business and industry along with an unparalleled quality of life. As we strive to maintain our economic success, our top priority is workforce development. An employable, skilled workforce is vital to our continued success. The Greater Hall Workforce Development Task Force was founded in 2015 with a mission to ensure we can acquire the talent and skills employers need for future growth and to replace an aging workforce. At the center of our community's workforce initiative is Lanier Technical College (LTC), a founding member of the Workforce Task Force. Servicing seven counties, the need for future technical education is so great that the first new technical college campus in Georgia is now under construction in Hall County. The new campus will serve the entire region and provide educated, skilled talent for the next generation in Northeast Georgia. Governor Nathan Deal was on hand on October 26 to speak at the new campus. He discussed his drive to educate Georgians to take jobs that are right here in our own state. As part of his efforts to educate and train our citizens, he went to the General Assembly and asked for "more categories of types of jobs that were already available if you had the skills to be able to take them." As a result, we are now up to 12 categories that the HOPE Grant will cover, paying 100 percent of the tuition of the courses for a certification or diploma. Lanier Technical College already supports our local employers, adjusting curriculum and degree programs to address employers' current needs. Two examples are the addition of the Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and motor sports technology programs. LTC offers a skills guaranty to employers so that if a graduate does not have the appropriate proficiency expected from the degree obtained, LTC will retrain the employee. Currently, LTC has a job placement rate of 93 percent.

LTC does not stop with educating students and supports future entrepreneurs with its Manufacturing Development Center. This Center helps existing small businesses plan for the next growth phase of their organization and assists a new entrepreneur through the process of commercializing a new idea.

Hall County has a very diverse and successful business community, and we owe much of our success to LTC. With President Dr. Ray Perren’s leadership, Lanier Technical College has become a premier regional education and career development institution. Governor Deal was Special Guest Speaker at the college's "Come See Our Progress" event on October 26.

2017 Most Fit Company Awards presented at HealthSmart The Greater Hall Chamber presented Most Fit Company Awards at the 11th Annual HealthSmart Breakfast. A VISION 2030 Initiative, judging criteria for the contest included wellness, nutrition and fitness opportunities provided for employees. Awards were presented in three categories: Small companies (50 or less employees), Medium companies (51-250 employees), Large companies (251+ employees). Congratulations to Turner, Wood & Smith Insurance, Syfan Logistics and King's Hawaiian! Brett Fowler, Turner, Wood & Smith Insurance (TWS), winner of Most Fit Company in small employer category, with Elizabeth Higgins, VISION 2030. TWS employs 38 people and is the largest independent insurance agency in Northeast Georgia providing commercial and personal insurance, as well as employee benefits. TWS participates in the Go365 wellness program provided by their health insurance provider, Humana, with nearly 100% engagement. The program helps control health insurance costs and drives healthy behaviors. They partner with Longstreet Clinic to provide flu shots onsite and provide CPR training to all staff through the North Georgia Heart Foundation as well as training for an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) that was purchased for their office. Many employees have incorporated stand up desks to encourage movement for improved circulation and relief for lower back pain. The host an annual health and wellness event to encourage usage of the Go365 wellness program for employees and all of their Humana clients. Humana enrolled employees have the opportunity to receive a biometric screening, flu shot, and a results consultation with health feedback and wellness tips. twsinsurance.com Happy Ferguson, Syfan Logistics, accepts award from Elizabeth Higgins, Executive Director, VISION 2030. Syfan Logistics has a Drug-Free Workplace Certification through the Georgia State Board of Workers Compensation. They offer biometric screening and flu shots to their employees through their health insurance provider, Humana. Syfan Logistics sponsors and participates in many community 5K races and supports employees that walk in the 3-day breast cancer event. Their co-ed softball team came in first place, and they also have a men's softball team and a men's golf team. Syfan has an onsite exercise facility and two trainers that team members have the option to work with. King's Hawaiian Bakery in Oakwood has 540 employees and produces the company's flagship product, Hawaiian sweet bread. King’s Hawaiian has an employee driven wellness team at the plant. With the corporate wellness program offered through United Healthcare, monthly topics are presented with an online incentive program where employees can earn gift cards by participating. They host their own on-site health fair that includes biometric screenings, flu shots, and local vendor booths. An onsite Early Intervention Specialist from ATI Worksite Solutions treats work related injuries, non-work related injuries, and health issues as well as bringing solutions that help improve safety. Weekly wellness activities offered include yoga classes, on-site circuit training with Team Radosta, trail hikes and golf. The company hosted the 4th Annual Lanier Tech Foundation 5K, and a “Biggest Loser” competition that resulted in the plant losing almost 350 lbs. The 6th Annual Master Craftsmen Awards were presented in October as part of the Featherbone Communiversity Master Series Program in partnership with Lanier Technical College.
