Resident News & Information
From the desk of Gary Hulion As summer fades to fall, it is time to start preparing for many changes that will take place over the coming months. The lawns will begin to fade, the flowers will slowly disappear, and the days will become shorter. This is a time that each of you should start checking around the outside of your homes for maintenance issues that may have gone unnoticed. Caulking around windows and doors should be inspected. This is one of the major avenues of lost energy for your home. Since it will be getting dark earlier, make sure outside lighting is working properly, especially if it is on a timer. Plan to have your irrigation systems winterized and shut down. Bring in all of the cold sensitive or potted plants. On the interior, you should change the batteries in your smoke detectors. October is National Fire Prevention month. Do you have a fire extinguisher in your home? Check to be sure it is properly charged and the expiration date is still valid. Change the filters in your HVAC unit as this will also help to eliminate summer allergies that may be lingering around. With the cooler weather coming, get outside and enjoy the beauty that this area has to offer. The Cresswind concept was built on three foundations, Nutrition, Fitness, and Relationships. It takes all three of the components to live a
vibrant lifestyle that we all should be striving for. There are a variety of programs and fitness routines that are offered here at Cresswind. Most of these programs have varying levels of skill from beginner to the most advanced. There are several nutritional programs offered that enhance your health and wellbeing from Weight Watchers to healthy eating classes. Last but not least, we Gary Hulion should all be building relationships inside and outside our community. We have a vast number of volunteers working in and outside the community. Maybe you are a great mentor or teacher that could provide some much needed attention some of our area youth could benefit from, or maybe you are the person who can sit with those who are shut in and just need a friend to check on them. In all things give thanks. Somewhere just out of reach is someone who has just a little tougher issue and could use a friend. We are all a part of a much bigger picture.

Committee Corner From the
Architectural Review Committee (ARC)… By Dan Gershkowitz The Mission and Purpose of the Architectural Review Committee (ARC) is to preserve and enhance the aesthetic qualities of our community for the enjoyment of current and future homeowners while protecting and growing the values of our homes. The ARC Application process is straightforward. The Application is located on the www.cresswindll.com website under the Committees Tab and then the ARC. Follow the instructions and print or fill in the form and provide it to the office in the Clubhouse. Provide an explanation and documents, brochures or photographs in support of your request. An ARC Representative will contact you to schedule a visit to discuss the project which is key in expediting the review and approval process. We recognize that each application seeks to personalize your home’s appearance and value. Our intent is to offer our insight and assistance to help you to achieve your goals.
Health and Fitness Committee By Ava Lewis
The Health & Fitness Committee is very excited about the number of new residents enjoying our beautiful gym. We have had several generous residents donate a safety squat bar, gym clock, and a new set of dumbbells. Ava and JP continue to offer free fitness instruction classes the second Tuesday of every month at 3:00pm. Please sign up at the front desk. We can accept six people at each session. Our Health & Fitness Committee continues to work to improve all aspects of fitness. We are thrilled to have just added a new ballet class. Check the Cresswind website for days and times for classes. All of the great instructors are certified and very talented. Please come and enjoy all the classes we have to offer.

Landscape Committee By Meg Bohn
RUMORS? RUMORS!!! RUMORS?! Did we get your attention? The Landscape Committee would like to dispel some of those rumors out in the Community about our landscaping rules. For instance, almost all vegetables are annuals that must be planted year after year. They are allowed in side and backyard beds as long as they aren’t visible from the street. Raised beds are not required for vegetables if they are neatly planted and well maintained. Perennial herbs are also fine to plant in beds as long as they are contained so as not to spread. The Landscape Committee would also love to see residents planting their annual and perennial flowers in the ground rather than in pots where they will use less water and grow healthier! For minimal annual and perennial plantings, it is not necessary to submit a landscape change request form, especially if the flowers are being planted in back and side yards not visible from the street. If you have a question about landscaping rules, please go to the Cresswind LL website and email your query at “Contact the Landscape Committee.”

Welcome Committee News By Denise Skeels
Our Cresswind Welcome Committee of twelve members has been hard at work contacting new residents. We held a Newcomer’s Orientation in the Ballroom on August 16th for those new residents closing on homes. Approximately 50 residents attended the presentation by First Service Residential. Several Clubs, the Cresswind Board, and our CA management also attended the orientation. The new residents were able to pick up information about Gainesville and surrounding Hall County. The next New Resident Orientation will be held in November. If you do not hear from a Welcome Committee Member within four weeks of closing, please contact me at skeelsdenise@gmail.com. Welcome to Cresswind!

2018 National Dance Day at Cresswind!
Genealogy Club By Dave Dittmeier
The Genealogy Club continues to unpack resources of genealogical research. Members are constantly discovering new research resources, so a new segment has been added to our meetings. “Did You Know” presents these new resources/findings by club members. One member found the International Tracing Service which lists individuals who were interred in labor and work camps in Germany during WWII. He found health records, marriage and birth records, and photos of the ancestors he was researching (over 90 pages of documentation!) The Genealogy Club continually finds new resources. The Club is open to all residents regardless of their level of research and expertise. We help each other.
You might be a genealogist if. ...cemeteries make for great outings with the grandkids.

Adventures in Dining By Karen Silverthorn
Previously called Dinner Group, we will now be known as “Adventures in Dining” to reflect what this group is all about. The fall marks the start of our 7th season in Cresswind. We will continue to meet four times per year so members, please mark your calendars now for: October 6th, November 3rd, February 2nd, 2019 and March 2nd, 2019. October’s meal will highlight Italian cuisine. If you no longer wish to receive notice of the planned events, please email the coordinator. Our mission is simple - to enjoy delicious meals while meeting new neighbors around an elegant dinner table. There are four couples/pairs of people assigned to a host home. At each dinner, residents are rotated so members will always meet new neighbors and get to know them as friends. All recipes are provided and dinner participants are assigned a portion of the meal to prepare. Food and beverage costs (average $40 - $65 per pair/couple) are shared equally among participants at each house. Anyone can join at any time during the year. Annual membership in the Cooking Club is required. Guidelines for Adventures in Dining are on the Cooking Club’s website. If you are interested in joining, email directly the coordinator (Karen Silverthorn, silk3349@charter.net) to be added to the email list. Evite and email notifications will begin in September to members on the email list.
Every meal is an adventure!

Cooking Club By Paula King The Cooking Club remains a busy club with multiple events. We had a Luau in June that was lots of fun with all the tropical shirts and native food. Then our Salad in a Jar class was sold out almost immediately with 20 happy people taking home four different salads in a jar. Not to be confused with our first ever Salad Pot Luck -- who knew there were that many kinds of salads made by our wonderful Cresswind club members. I have been told to repeat ...repeat. Coming up, we will have our annual Poker Run, Beer Tasting BBQ on Sunday September 16th. I will be sending out a request for people willing to help soon. Consider working an event since it is a great way to get to know people outside your block. Upcoming Classes include Red Wine/Appetizer pairing and back by popular demand, Salad in a Jar featuring fall veggies - both of these are small classes so be sure to watch for emails announcing when tickets are going on sale as they sell out fast. In October, we will have our first ever Murder Mystery Dinner and it promises to be a unforgettable night. Also mark your calendar for October 20th for the annual Oktoberfest party, one of our biggest and best events of the year. On November 13th, we will have our always popular Soup/Chili Night.
Tuesday, October 16th will be our Annual Meeting. Since we do almost all our announcements through email, this is the one time a year we all get together. This is also the time for our Election for 2019 - I will be asking for nominations in late September. You can nominate yourself or any other member of the cooking club. However, please do not nominate someone without checking with them first. Three of our board will be “aging out” having served for 3+ years, President - Paula King, Treasurer - Rose Micuch and Secretary - Linda Gillot. So, consider running for a Board seat and helping make decision on events, etc. Balloting will begin after the meeting and continue for ten days then the new board will be announced and take effect on January 1, 2019. Joining the Cooking Club is easy - just drop a check in the club mailbox (in the back right hand corner of the lobby) for $5.00 per person. Please put membership in the memo line and you will then be added to our mailing list and will know all the great things we have going.

Cardio Line Dance Greetings from Lisa Phifer and Debbie Coursey-Prah, along with some of the dancers from the Sunday night “ramped up” line dance class! We have had so much fun and had such great response to this class...but be warned: this is NOT a beginner class! We use familiar dances from regular classes but use fast tempo music and move quickly from one dance to another to get a great workout. This class usually goes from 6:30-8pm and if we want to, we just keep going to 8:30pm in the Aerobics Room. So, if you want to move it, then this class is for you. Leaders: Lisa Phifer and Debbie Coursey-Prah. Regular classes are offered on Mondays 6:30-7:30 pm and Thursdays 2-3pm (both in the Aerobics Room). These are also not beginner classes but at a more relaxed pace.

Quilting Group By Evelyne Palmer The Quilting Club extends a heartfelt thank you to our residents who have graciously donated MORE fabrics and other materials to our Club. The Club continues finding new patterns to best use these donations by making into lap quilts distributed through Legacy Link. After the August delivery, our total lap quilts is 79! On July 19th, 2018, nine members of the Quilting Club had a great time on a road trip to Blairsville where we had lunch, shopped at the Quilt Shop, and attended an Art Quilt Exhibit held in Hayesville, NC. More road trips are in the planning. Our focus for the next few weeks in addition to Senior Quilts and Quilts for Kids are items to be sold at the Holiday Market in October to raise funds for supplies. Included in these items will be Microwave Koozies, Pillow cases, Shopping Bags, Aprons, Curling Iron covers, Kitchen Towel scarves (also known as “Not your mama’s Apron”) lap quilts and others. If you are interested in any of these items prior to the Holiday Market, stop in any Thursday to see them. We meet every Thursday, 1:00 to 4:00 pm, in the Arts and Craft Room. All levels of Quilters, from beginner to experienced, as well as new prospective members are welcome. Stop by, meet us, and see the work we do. Contact either Evelyne Palmer, hybiscus5@outlook.com or Bonnie May at Quilt.lady2@charter.net The Group is available to offer assistance to our fellow residents if you have any quilting projects you started and now have the time to finish.

Social Singles By Elaine Vetter It has been a busy, fun summer for Social Singles. We started June with a Scavenger Hunt during our 2nd Sunday social. It was fun to see the ‘kid’ in all of us as we scurried around the Clubhouse trying to figure out clues and get pictures taken without the other teams noticing what we had zeroed in on. Other summer activities included lunch outings, bowling, hikes, a trip to Gibbs Gardens, several boat rides courtesy of one of our members, and then a day of tubing in Helen, Georgia followed by lunch at one of the local German restaurants. Another day trip included a drive to Talmo, Georgia, first for brunch, and then to check out Simpson Auto Farm (cemetery for old vehicles) on the drive home. The calendar for the fall is shaping up and includes a Labor Day get-together, baseball game at Gwinnett Stripers, Miniature Golf Tournament, day trip to downtown Atlanta for the Oakland Cemetery Festival, and a UGA Volleyball game. If you are single and looking for new things to do with other single residents, this is a great group to join. Contact Elaine Vetter at elvetter@hotmail.com for more information or to be added to the email list.

Neighborhood Theatre By Wayne Blum
The auditions have been held. The cast has been selected. The dates have been set. The production team is in place and ready to go! The fall production, “Present Laughter” will be directed by our own Scott Larson and is a comedy by Noel Coward . The plot follows a few days in the life of the successful and self-obsessed light comedy actor Garry Essendine as he prepares to travel for a touring commitment in Africa. Amid a series of events bordering on farce, Garry has to deal with women who want to seduce him, placate both his long-suffering secretary and his estranged wife, cope with a crazed young playwright, and overcome his impending mid-life crisis (since he has recently turned forty – we may have to adjust the age a bit). The story was described by Coward as “a series of semi-autobiographical pyrotechnics.”
These past and future productions are not possible without the combined efforts of actors, costume designers, set decorators, chorus, dancers, house management, and many other volunteers. If you are new to the neighborhood or have been around for some time and want to get involved with the theater please contact Wayne Blum at theblums@charter. net. No experience is necessary. If you do not want to try acting, there is plenty to do “behind the scenes.” This year, 2018, promises to be another successful year for the Cresswind Neighborhood Theatre.

Cresswind Bowling League By Phil Vinyard Our league held its organizational meeting on Sunday, August 12th and will begin bowling on Wednesday September 5th. At our organizational meeting, we will elect the league and club board for the upcoming season, go over all the league details, and fill out existing teams who have openings and form new teams. We hope to have lots of new residents come to the meeting and sign up to either bowl on a team or be a club member and therefore qualify to be a substitute when a team member is going to be absent. The bowling season is 28 weeks long with time off at the holidays to allow for traveling and enjoying the holidays with family and friends. Our league is a fun league with all skill levels represented. The first week of bowling is when you start to establish your average and that average then determines your handicap. Those with lower averages have higher handicaps, which makes the competition as fair as possible. Averages are recalculated weekly based upon actual bowling scores. A big part of our club is the social aspect of getting to know other bowlers and your teammates and often going out to lunch together following the match. We even have non-bowlers and spouses who come and watch the match and then accompany the team to lunch. So if you like to have some light exercise and enjoy the company of others with a little competition, even if you have not bowled in years, this may be the club for you. Come and check us out.

From the Cresswind Kayak Club By John Stevens Lake Lanier water levels and seasonal weather have been nearly perfect for kayaking. A number of CLL Kayak Club members have shared some great paddling experiences to include a video of a small deer swimming across our cove and then scampering up the hill away from the shoreline (see the attached photo). Other Club members have spied a family of foxes frolicking near their den on the point just before exiting our cove.…! Still others tell stories of having paddled to ‘Jumping Rock’ for an exhilarating swim before continuing on to the Gainesville Marina for lunch at Skogies and then paddling back to Cresswind. So it seems that ‘life is good’ for CLL Kayak Club members…! As a reminder, Saturday morning group paddles are a pretty regular event under the guidance of Ron Grimm. It is an easy, low-stress way to get out on the water with 10-20 other seasoned and novice fellow-kayakers. Check in with Ron at: cresswind.kayak.club@gmail.com for more info, or just show up around 8:30 and be on the water and ready to paddle by 9:00 am Saturday mornings starting from A Dock. These paddles last 60-90 minutes depending on what the group wants to do. And REMEMBER: YOU DON’T NEED A KAYAK to be a member of the CLL Kayak Club. Check out the CLL KC website at: https://cresswindkayak.wixsite.com/ cresswindkayak for information on how to be part of the CLL KC fun.

Tennis By Sandy Barmak It was a Sizzling summer, yet we still played lots of tennis and heated up the courts. There was organized play every morning of the week. Mondays saw Women’s USTA team play, Thursdays had women’s play, Saturdays was the new “competitive” men’s play giving guys a chance to play on a court with others of the same level, and open play took place the other mornings. Three clinics in late August rounded out the summer and helped us elevate our skills. Wimbledon is a special Grand Slam to watch. We enjoyed a Social Get Together with delicious breakfast treats as we watched the Wimbledon Women’s final. The fall competitive teams are in full swing with lots of action on the courts. Women are playing USTA teams while the Men’s Silverball competes with local community teams. The men have three ALTA teams and one USTA team. Good luck to all! Fall clinics started in September giving everyone a chance to return to tennis or hone their skills. Watch the Daily Updates and Tennis Club emails for more information. To learn more about our tennis programs, contact our president, Debbie Cortjens at Debbie.cortjens@gmail.com.

New Trail Club Formed
By Roy Gogel
By Bill Dickey
Casino Night on Saturday, September 8th was definitely a fun night. All proceeds go to the Veterans’ charity, helping not only Veterans but also the needy and homeless in the greater Hall County area as well. Thank you for your support. Membership in the Charity is open to all Cresswind residents. Donations can be deposited in the Charity’s clubhouse mailbox. Members are encouraged to support volunteer service areas. LOOKING AHEAD: The semi-annual food drive will be conducted on Wednesday, October 10th. October’s quarterly presentation on October 18th will be about a potentially new service area. The annual

soul. The Cresswind Community is fortunate to have these beautiful natural areas
service group. The original Trailblazers were Frank Kardian, Rolf Grimm, Daryl Goetz, Ed Proctor, David Galshack and Bill Dickey. Later they were joined by Charlie Bassham, Paul Fisher ad David Jones. The group marked the trails, made and built the signs, stick holders, benches and cut out the walking sticks. About 30 residents have signed on to be trail stewards. Bruce Cattanach, Mike Thurmon, Don & Rosemarie Bowen and Lance Haney have volunteered to become trail leaders. The goal of the club is to keep the trails as natural and safe as possible. And of course, provide a good supply of walking sticks! Members will do light maintenance and forbid the use of any herbicides. Studies have shown that getting out into nature is good for the mind, body and so you have opportunity to “get one with nature” without leaving the Community. The Trails are the only amenity that is away from the Club area. Thanks to the original Trailblazers for their service to the Community and to the new club members for stepping up to help keep our trails enjoyable for all to use. Happy Trails to you!

CRESSWIND LADIES GOLF CLUB By Mary Ann Amick
The Cresswind Ladies Golf Club members continue to play on Thursday mornings. Due to the increased number of ladies playing this year, we are now pairing members, so everyone gets the opportunity to play with others. Many stay for lunch at the Chattahoochee Grille after golf and enjoy socializing and discussing our golf games! We recently had our second Nine & Dine Scramble with fifteen couples participating including several new members. It was a beautiful evening for golf, weather was perfect, and dinner followed at Riggy’s! We are looking forward to several other events including some “GET Away Golf ” outings as well as several more monthly Nine & Dine Scrambles. Contact Mary Ann Amick if you have any questions. ladiesgolf@ gmail.com You can check out our website on the Cresswind website under Ladies Golf club.

Cresswind Investment Club By Janet Nelson
The Cresswind Investment Club meets monthly for review and discussion of stocks that we currently hold and discussion of potential purchases. Along with presentations from members of the club, we periodically have some outside experts come to provide specialized information, such as tax implications of investing, trends in the market, or obtaining information on the internet. Save the morning of October 25th to hear our next community-wide presentation from Morgan-Stanley! Following Cresswind traditions, we include two parties a year, as well! Since our club has recently added several new members, Debbie Coursey-Prah has added an additional club for review of principles of investing for newer members, along with her class on options for more experienced investors. Anyone who is interested is welcome to visit our club which meets the first Monday of each month (excluding holidays) at 2:45 pm in the Crow’s Nest. If you would like to visit the club, please contact Peter Bertasi at nascarn986a@gmail.com or Janet Nelson at jnotesto87@gmail.com.

Court News: Pickleball By Jan Cieply Did you know that Pickleball is the fastest growing sport in the country? Cresswind has doubled its membership from last year and is now up to 259 members. Are you curious about this fastgrowing sport? If so, join Howie Mueller and Wendy O’Hanlon on Wednesdays beginning in September on the Pickleball courts for excellent instruction in this addictive game of Pickleball. Under the leadership of Amy Pike, the Pickleball Club has been adding many new and previously offered activities. In April, an AM and PM Novice League was formed and was followed by a Novice Tournament. A Dual Clinic (Pickleball and Tennis) was held on April 29th. Those players who had an interest in ‘the other sport’ had an opportunity to try it out. With Jack Hollfelder in the lead, the Cresswind men played a weekly Round Robin match against each other. This was a very successful endeavor. In May, a Mixed Evening League began and was held on Mondays until mid-July. Partners were randomly paired each week which provided a new challenge every time.
The Pickleball Board is currently running a BRICK Fundraiser to purchase two 10 foot long double seated benches as an escape from the unrelenting Georgia sun. Anyone is welcome to purchase a brick in memory of a loved one, to honor a friend or family member or for any reason. The form can be printed from the Pickleball website. The address is Cresswindpickleball.com or you may contact Jan Cieply at jancieply16@gmail.com.

The Second Annual Reed Tournament was held on Saturday, May 2nd. Eighty-six people from Novice to Advanced players
participated in this tournament. Virginia Chapman organized and decorated the ballroom for a delicious BBQ dinner provided by Reed Financial. Scott Golden, a Pickleball Pro, coached and guided all level of players in several three-hour long clinics in late June. His teaching was so well received that he returned to offer more clinics in mid-August. In July, a General Pickleball Meeting and Cook Out on the Patio was attended by over 100 people. A special recognition was given to Gary Crawford for his many contributions to enhancing our Pickleball courts. On August 18th, there was a Round Robin Fundraiser called the Mid-Summer Madness tournament, another first for this year.

The Tanglers’ Group meets once a month on the second Thursday at 10:00am. We recently used the Zentangle Inspired Art to decorate canvas sneakers and a canvas bag. We think they are really fun! Please come join us! If you like to doodle, you will love this art form! Newcomers are always welcome.
Bingo Nights have been sellouts every time the ‘balls start rolling’!
I have several fun projects planned for upcoming Make & Take Classes. We are going to do some Alcohol Ink on glass and give a try at Macrame - yes It is back! We will make a hanging Plant Holder. Look out for the email on these two classes in September and in the Daily Updates. Hope you will join in on the fun!
Look for information on Mini Golf, Bocce Ball, Cornhole, and Basketball in the Daily Updates. As the weather cools, the competition heats up!!

Be on the lookout for the next events in September (fall), October (Spooky Halloween), and December (Holiday time). Get your wristbands early and tickets will be sold at the front desk.
Contact your Sports and Games board members if you have an idea for other sports and games you would like to see started at Cresswind. Get out and do some things as the cooler fall temperatures arrive.

Cresswind Fishing Club News By Toby Kelley The Cresswind fishermen are enjoying beautiful full Lake Lanier this summer. However, in the heat of the season, fishing in our section of the lake has been slow. The striper fishermen head down lake to chase the big fish. The spotted bass fishermen have to fish early or late to catch the bite. The crappie fishermen are telling lies and enjoying each other’s company regardless of whether the fish are biting or not. Come join the fishing club on one of our “group fishes.” As the weather cools off this fall, we expect the fishing to heat up.

Financial Education for Women Club By Debbie Coursey-Prah Ladies, are you financially ready for the future? Really? Do you know what you would do if something happened to your financial support (spouse or financial advisor)? Do you understand what your financial advisor tells you? Do you know where your assets are located and how to access them? If your answer to any of these questions is “no” then you are financially vulnerable. That is scary! So far, I have met several women at Cresswind who have found themselves in that situation. Do not be vulnerable. Join us in the Clubhouse kitchen on the 2nd and 4th Mondays of each month at 2 pm. Currently we are learning investing basics and cash management. For questions, contact Debbie Coursey-Prah, MD, MBA at drdbe@aol.com.
