Cresswind CARE Committee

Education Committee Update

by Judy Brannan

By Doug Geganto

Two months ago, a new committee was approved by the Board of Directors. The CARE Committee (Cresswind Assistance, Recovery, and Encouragement) has been formed to assist our neighbors in time of need. Our Mission Statement is: “To serve the community by providing such help as needed or wanted in times of crises with caring, compassion, and empathy, respecting their need for privacy.”

The Cresswind Education committee is wrapping up 2018 on a very successful note. As of October 1, 2018, 1737 residents have attended our programs. We have presented 24 resident requested programs that the committee was able to successfully schedule. In August and September, we hosted the Gainesville Police Department to conduct two sessions of the Active Shooter program attended by 108 residents and a Self Defense class attended by 51 residents.

To help the committee meet the needs of the entire community, team leads have been appointed to represent each section, and we are currently adding leads for each phase of the section. We as a committee have determined four areas to help our residents. The first is a series of personal tasks as needed, such as setting up a Meal Train during recuperation from surgery or long-term illness, personal visits, sympathy cards, etc. We are now in the process of creating a list of physical resources for people to borrow, including walkers, wheelchairs, shower chairs, braces, ramps, etc. Next, we are compiling a list of InHome care facilities with a description of their services. We are also in the process of creating a lists for Rehab facilities, Nursing Homes, Assisted Living facilities, and Memory Care facilities. The committee will not make recommendations but rather offer the facts to help in decision-making when needed. To learn more about this Committee, to seek assistance or to volunteer to be part of it, visit the Cresswind website http://www.cresswindll.com and click on Committees. In the drop-down box, click on CARE Committee.

The Education Committee has launched our website at https:// sites.google.com/site/cwlleducation/home. On our website, residents can now get an advance look at the education program calendar, read a detailed description of all programs scheduled, review all the programs completed this year, and lastly send a request directly to the Education Committee if they have a specific request or idea for a program. We have already been scheduling our programs for 2019 and are pleased to report that beginning in January, we will be hosting the Cresswind Citizens Academy presented by the City of Gainesville. This will be an 8 weeks abbreviated version of the Citizens Academy conducted by the city every other year. Seating is limited to the first 40 residents who sign up and commit to attend a minimum of six of the eight sessions. Registration will open in December and close as soon as all 40 seats are filled. Watch the Daily Update for more details. In addition to the Citizens Academy, we also have scheduled in January the AARP Safe Driving Course for two days on January 15th and 16th from 6pm to 9pm in the Ballroom. There is a fee for this class, but successful completion may result in a discount on your auto insurance. Keep an eye on the Daily Update for details about all our upcoming programs for the remainder of 2018 and in 2019.

Welcome Committee News By Denise Skeels Our Cresswind Welcome Committee of ten members has been hard at work contacting new residents. We held a Newcomer’s Orientation in the Ballroom on August 16th for those new residents closing on houses from April- July of 2018. Approximately 41 residents attended the presentation by MTScapes, First Service, and our HOA. They were also able to pick up information about Gainesville and surrounding Hall county. The next New Resident Orientation will be November 15th. If you do not hear from a Welcome Committee Member within four weeks of closing, both new and resale homes, please contact me at skeelsdenise@gmail.com. We do not want to miss any new residents!! Welcome to Cresswind!

Resident News & Information

From the desk of Gary Hulion Wow, this year has flown by very fast. Seems like yesterday we were meeting for our annual meeting and here we are making preparations for another. As we near the 941 mark of homes that have been constructed here at Cresswind, we should also remember that we are nearing 1750 residents. More people are using the amenities, more people on the roads and sidewalks, and more members reserving space at the clubhouse. Please be respectful of those who do not make up a large club and follow the posted association rules when making reservations. It is with great sympathy that I convey to you that we lost many fine residents over the past year, and because of that we created the CARE Committee, (Cresswind, Assistance, Recovery and Encouragement). It is unfortunate that we need this type of committee, but per our demographics, it is a necessity. They are always looking for volunteers to assist with neighbors in need and welcome your participation. As a reminder, with all the new members coming into the community, please be an informed neighbor and attend

the monthly Board Meetings, quarterly Committee Meetings, quarterly Club Meetings, and the Town Hall Meetings. Before you pass along information to your neighbors, make sure you have the correct information. Read the Daily Update, ask a staff member or Board member. It is time to change the clocks Gary Hulion back as Daylight Savings time begins on Sunday, November 4th at 2am. This is a time for some to catch an extra hour of sleep while others struggle with this time of year. Please be a good neighbor and check on those who might need a little companionship and make sure they are transitioning. The Holidays will be upon us before the next issue comes out so from the entire staff and Board of Directors we wish all of you a happy and prosperous New Year.

Rules & Regulations Committee Update By Fred Irvin In April 2018, we began the daunting task of rewriting the Cresswind Rules and Regulations. We have now completed that challenge with a document that we hope the community will find to be clear, concise, unambiguous, and enforceable. The new version will be web based, i.e., in a format that residents can select to read online, download, or print. It will contain hyperlinks, shortcuts to additional information within the rules themselves or to other online documents, an interactive Table of Contents that allows residents to go to the rule of interest with a simple click, and a search feature to quickly find the relevant topic. Our roll out communication plan includes a narrative of the changes, guidance on resident use, a feedback mechanism, and contact points for questions or assistance.

Architectural Review Committee (ARC)… The Mission and Purpose of the Architectural Review Committee (ARC) is to preserve and enhance the aesthetic qualities of our community for the collective enjoyment of all current and future homeowners while protecting and growing the value of our homes. Our Goal is to assist Cresswind Residents achieve their goals of enhancing the appearance of the exterior of their homes by engaging in dialogue with each resident submitting an application. Many residents discuss their upcoming projects in advance of submitting an application which results in improvements to their final objectives. The Process is simple and straightforward and will be further streamlined by being able to utilize online forms which will be available soon on the Cresswind LL Website (cresswindll.com). The Review and Approval of submitted applications has become more efficient as a direct result of residents reviewing the ARC Guidelines on the Cresswind LL Website to understand the requirements of the Application Submittal and the guidance provided by the established rules. A key ingredient of this process is the Objective and Recognition that each application submitted by Cresswind Residents to enhance and personalize their Cresswind experience is important to them, and our aim is to provide the best assistance and turnaround of each application as possible. Resident Assistance is the best way to ensure timely reviews and approvals of submitted applications: Make sure that all required information is contained with the

application forms. Provide a $1,500 Check made out to Cresswind At Lake Lanier for all work requiring one – it is returned at the end of the project as long as there was no damage to any common property. Please note any special issues, concerns or starting dates, so the review process can by properly scheduled. Recognize that many new and current residents are requesting project reviews and approvals and each one deserves a proper and timely review. Please begin to discuss your project with an ARC Member as soon as you decide to move ahead so you can get a head start on the application and your project. Revised Rules will be coming out shortly, and all residents are encouraged to review them when they become available. HAPPY HOLIDAYS - With the Holiday Season upon us, just a quick note regarding Holiday Decorations and Lighting: Holiday Lighting and Seasonal Displays (1) Holiday lighting displays may be installed within thirty days before the holiday and are to be removed within fifteen days after the holiday has ended. (2) Such lighting and displays must be consistent with the general style of the neighborhood. As an example, lighted reindeer of medium height are acceptable while balloon-type inflatable figures, blink-track racing lights, or displays that are very large and spread across a property are not. Cresswind Architectural Review Committee

Cycling Rules and Courtesies By Bob Cain, Health & Fitness Committee

As cooler weather approaches, we have seen an increase in bicycle riding here in Cresswind. It is great to have more cyclists taking advantage of our neighborhood roads, but there are a few thoughts that need to be considered while riding your bike safely.

40-6-296: Lights – Required when riding at night = white light on front and red light on the rear – visible to at least 300’

Georgia Laws: GA Law: Section 40-1-1 states that a bicycle considered a “vehicle” and is treated the same as a motorized vehicle in all aspects of road safety except where the specific term “motor vehicle” is referenced.

Helmets are required for all bicyclists under the age of 16 years old. Helmets should meet or exceed ANSI or Snell Memorial Foundation standards. Helmets for all cyclists are highly recommended.

40-6-56: “Safe distance” minimum of three feet means that a motor vehicle passing a bicycle going in the same direction on the roadway shall leave a safe distance between such vehicle and the bicycle until safely past the overtaken bicycle. This is known as the “Three-foot Rule.” 40-6-144: No sidewalk riding for anyone over 12 years of age, and is only applicable to those younger than 12 years of age if local ordinance permits.

Bicycling Courtesies (Rules of the Road): Lights are required at night and are highly recommended in daylight to provide more visibility to motorists. Yield when necessary as if in a motor vehicle.

40-6-294: Ride as near to the right side of the roadway as practical, except when turning left, to avoid hazards, the lane is too narrow or when safely passing a standing vehicle in the same direction.

Adherence to Speed Limits, Stop Signs, Roundabouts and Yield Signs is the same for all vehicles and should be complied with as for motor vehicles.

Ride no more than two riders abreast. And always ride single file when traffic approaches from either front or behind.

Group rides are a fun, enjoyable and a healthy way to get exercise. Please follow the rules and courtesies listed above whether riding with a group or solo to ensure we remain safe and alert!

40-6-291: Signaling turns: Left: extend left arm/hand out to the left. Right: extend right arm/hand straight out to the right or left arm/hand up.

The Library By: Eleanor Whalen The Library at the Club is a “lending” library. Visit the library, find a book to read, take it home to enjoy, when you have finished reading, just return it to the library cart. We thank all of the residents that have donated books, Audiobooks, DVDs and puzzles. A reminder...before making book donations, please check the copyright dates. We will be looking for books that were printed in 2009 and newer. Older books are donated to the bookstore on Gainesville Square. Please, no magazines! When you visit the library, you may want to sit at one of the puzzle tables and put in a few pieces! If you would rather work on your puzzle at home, we have a huge selection in the cabinets across from the Arts & Crafts Room!

Annuals and Perennials By Sarah Galshack, Landscape Committee

Annuals are defined as any plant that completes its natural life cycle-from germinated seed through growth, flower, and seed production to death---in a single growing season. Annuals add the pop of color to the garden. Once planted, they are quite carefree, needing only watering, fertilizing and perhaps some deadheading. Some cool weather annuals for our Cresswind gardens are violas, snapdragons, ornamental kale, and cabbages, pansies, and dianthus. Perennials, unlike annuals, will grow and bloom in the same spot year after year. So, is it a case of plant them and forget them? Oh, if only it were that easy! To keep them looking great in the garden they need tending. Besides correct water and fertilizer, they need a rich organic soil. Most of us will need to amend our soil. Perennials may also need deadheading, staking and after several years dividing (think hostas or daylilies). When fall comes and foliage is brown and unattractive, they will most likely need to be cut back to keep the garden looking tidy and disease free. Some perennials will stay green and look good all fall and winter. Think hellebores, heuchera, artemesias or rosemary. Enjoy the winter color in your garden, but remember any plant depends on you to care for it!

Get ready for shorter days with expert installation of outdoor lighting. From path lights, to up lights for trees, and even water feature lighting, well-placed and carefully selected light fixtures can highlight your home’s architectural features and improve safety. Call us to find out how you can earn a free lighting package for your landscape.

What’s Happening

Fun with Fashion

By Sue Garcia

Bible Study

By Dave Dittmeier

Fun with Fashion continues to add new members and all residents are welcome to join at any time throughout the year. In the past months, this club has enjoyed learning about container gardening from master gardener Sarah Galshack and visiting Parsons in Cumming for a presentation of patio/yard décor plus shopping and lunch afterward. These two popular events hopefully will be repeated next summer.

The Bible Study Club continues on several fronts. The Women’s Bible Study continues a study of the book of Revelation. The Men are unpacking the Book of 1 John. Several Couples’ Bible Studies continue to meet in private homes in the community. The Women’s, Men’s, and Couples’ Bible Studies are open to all residents who are interested in studying the Bible and all welcome new participants.

Next on the club’s agenda will be a delicious lunch while taking in the majesty of the North Georgia scenery at Montaluce Winery on October 25th and a trip to the Merchandise Mart in Atlanta on November 13th. Members may drive themselves or sign up to ride in a contracted van for a small fee. A November visit to Chico’s at The Collection in Cumming is also in the works with lunch as well. Be looking for emails announcing signups for these outings expected to be fill up quickly.

The Bible Study Club also continued its monthly nondenominational services with guest speakers from First United Methodist Church, Flat Creek Baptist Church and our elected representative to the House of Representatives. The non-denominational services are held the first Sunday of the month. All residents are welcome to attend.

The Club will hold its Annual Meeting on November 8th at 1:30 pm in the Ballroom. The program will consist of a demonstration of Healthy Appetizers for the holidays or anytime presented by Lisa Giblin. And the Nominating Committee will present the slate of officers for 2019. After nominations from the floor, voting will take place. Hoping each member can attend to vote and enjoy tasty appetizers!

We have four bocce ball courts here at Cresswind located behind the clubhouse.

Bocce Ball

By Steve Remsen

We play on Thursday if the weather is good. The start time depends on the time of year and will be listed in the Daily Update. All residents are invited to come and play. If any questions, please contact Steve Remsen.

Adventures in Dining By Karen Silverthorn Previously called Dinner Group, the 7th season of dining experiences kicked off in October with a delicious Italian themed dinner. November’s meal is planned with a savory traditional flare. Anyone can join at any time during the year, so take advantage of the two remaining dinners. Thai dishes are planned for February 2, 2019 and for the last dinner on March 2, 2019, Irish food will be celebrated. Our mission is simple - to enjoy delicious meals while meeting new neighbors around an elegant dinner table. There are always a total of 4 couples/pairs of people at a host home. At each dinner, residents are rotated so members will always meet new neighbors and get to know them as friends. All recipes are provided and participants are assigned a portion of the meal to prepare. Food and beverage costs (average $45 - $65 per pair/couple) are shared equally among participants at each house. Annual membership in the Cooking Club is required. Guidelines for Adventures in Dining are on the Cooking Club’s website. If you are interested in joining, email directly the coordinator (Karen Silverthorn, silk3349@charter.net) to be added to the email list.

Every meal is an adventure! CRESSWIND RESIDENT, Madeline Wirt, would like to introduce to you her law partners, John Gram and Cara Mitchell, who specialize in Estate Planning. With a combined 55 years of experience, John and Cara bring a wealth of knowledge and expertise to their practice. Comprehensive estate planning advice often involves far more than basic documents such as a will, trust, financial power of attorney and advance directive for health care. Our estate planning group provides strategic planning services tailored to individual wishes and objectives, as well as review and update of your existing documents.

Canine Club

By Jami Dittmeier

Calling all dog lovers and owners! If you have or are thinking of getting a dog and are interested in meeting some new friends for both yourself and your furry friend, we have just the club for you. The Canine Club was formed to enhance the lives of our dogs and our neighbors’ dogs in Gainesville and Hall County. The Club hopes to offer dog training (in appropriate off-site locations), educational canine/animal programs, and support local canine charities. We do not collect any dues and there are no requirements other than an opportunity to learn how to enrich our pets’ lives. In 2019, The Canine Club’s plan is to meet the second Thursday of the month. And now you can weigh in on what is to be presented. We hope to offer educational, safetyoriented, and fun programs. So, come join us. You will be glad you did, and your furry friend(s) will too. Please contact Jami Dittmeier SJDittmeier@gmail. com or Sue DeCrescenzo sdecrescenzo1@yahoo.com for more information or program ideas.

Community Travel Club

By Mary Hensien

As always, the Community Travel Club has so much to offer to our Cresswind neighbors. Each and every adventure provides an opportunity for us to get to know each other and to have fun and wonderful times together. Coming very soon is the Community Travel Club’s BEST deal ever- to Harrah’s Cherokee Casino! The cost per person is only $35 and it includes a $20 credit for the slot machines! How can you beat that? This is always a fun and lively trip from start to finish. Folks always enjoy the fabulous Bingo prizes on the bus and the concluding stop at Jaemor Farm for fresh produce. What a winning trip! Have you ever found yourself having trouble getting into the Holiday spirit? Well, we have something that will do the trick! Come to Nashville, Tennessee from December 12th through the 15th. The great news with this trip is your family and friends are also invited. It will be four days of non-stop holiday excitement and bliss at Gaylords Opryland Resort. “A Country Christmas” includes more than three million lights, 15,000 poinsettias, and fifteen miles of garland! Some of what you will see includes a Broadway style show, over two million pounds of larger-than-life ice sculptures, a dinner and show featuring Trace Adkins, guided tours of Ryman Auditorium and Nashville, plus admission to Treasures for the Holiday Craft Fair. What a Holiday experience! All time favorite trips of the Community Travel Club are the Fox Theater Trips. Cresswinders LOVE these memorable trips to the historic Fox Theater in downtown Atlanta. We recently announced that on February 27th, we will enjoy dinner at the famous Southern restaurant, Mary Mac’s, and then will travel by coach to see the Tony award-winning Broadway show Les Miserables. Once again, another delightful and memorable evening for club members! For the FIRST TIME EVER your Community Travel Club is offering its first INTERNATIONAL TRIP! So many have expressed an interest in touring abroad and especially in Scotland. So, we have worked hard to put together a wonderful seven day historical trip for August of 2019 that includes fabulous locations such as Edinburgh, St. Andrews and Glasgow. Put on your tartan and join your neighbors as they tour Scotland! **Please check the Community Travel Club website for the details and current status of each trip.

Pokeno

Genealogy Club

By Diane Laird

By Dave Dittmeier

Pokeno is a game similar to poker, keno, and bingo rolled into one. Each player has a preprinted game card with various playing cards printed on it. As cards from a playing deck are turned over, players place a marker on that card if it is on their board. When a poker hand is mapped out according to the perimeter sheet, a winner is declared and the pot collected for that hand becomes theirs. It is very simple and only five minutes to learn and something to do every Sunday night with friends at from 5:30 -8:00pm. No need to reserve your space or have a lesson.

The Genealogy Club continues to unpack resources of genealogical research for its members. Because there is such a wealth of genealogical material available, new resources are continually being discovered. So, a new segment has been added to our meetings. “Did You Know” presents these new resources/findings. This segment has included former abbreviations for states in the US, a wiki research tool, and how to clear cookies and browser history from computers. The Genealogy Club continually finds new resources. The Club is open to all residents regardless of their level of research and expertise. We help each other.

If you think your family is normal, then you are probably not a genealogist.

We strive to create “customers for life” and believe that each patient deserves the extra care and attention that we would want for our own family members.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank Benchmark Physical Therapy who generously donated $3000 to our club. At the Pickleball General Meeting, it was voted that we could use these funds to purchase one of two 10-foot double seated, covered cabana benches that will be placed between Courts 4 and 5.

On Saturday, October 13th from 8am to 1pm, Riggy’s Sports Bar & Grill sponsored a Pickleball Tournament. This Tournament provided a team format which was a new design for this group of players. We always welcome any Cresswind resident to come and support our players and sponsors. Who knows, you may just get the bug to play. On Sunday, November 4th, Pickleball players will have an opportunity to play BINGO with White Elephants donations as the game prizes. This Fundraiser is sure to bring out some hilarious moments. The Pickleball Holiday Party will be held on December 16th.

The BRICK Fundraiser is closed and there were 69 bricks sold. The personalized bricks will be ordered and placed between the Tennis and Pickleball courts before year’s end. We are looking for volunteers who can assist with Novice training and to run Leagues. If you have any interest in this, please contact any Board member with questions or suggestions.

Quilting Group By Evelyne Palmer The Quilting Club exceeded our goal at the Cresswind Holiday Bazaar on October 6th to raise monies for supplies needed to continue making our donation quilts in 2019. This Bazaar was another successful event in that almost all items the members made Microwave Koozies, Pillow cases, Shopping Bags, Curling Iron covers, Kitchen Towel scarves, lap quilts, and others were sold. We have a few items left and if you are interested in any of these items, please stop in the Arts and Crafts Room any Thursday during our regular meeting to see them while they are available. We meet every Thursday, 1:00 to 4:00 pm in the Arts and Craft room. All levels of Quilters, from beginner to experienced, are welcome. Stop by, meet us, and see the work we do. If you have an interest in sewing and want to join us, we are happy to see all prospective members! We do many quilting related projects, big and small, work at individual levels, and have fun! Contact either Evelyne Palmer, hybiscus5@outlook.com or Bonnie May at Quilt.lady2@charter.net. Workshops and road trips are planned for the coming year and we all look forward to becoming more skilled at quilting. Members will continue working on our community donation projects of Quilts for Kids and lap quilts for seniors in need distributed through Legacy Link. The Club is available to offer assistance to our fellow residents if you have any quilting projects you started and now have the time to finish.

Cooking Club

By Paula King

The Cooking Club is the largest (over 700 members) and one of the most active Clubs in Cresswind. In just September and October, we had a wine and appetizer class, then a Poker Run/Beer Tasting BBQ under beautiful fall skies, followed by a fabulous Murder Mystery Dinner, and a vegetable soup class! Plus, our annual Oktoberfest event which is always one of the club’s highlights of the year was also held for all Cooking Club members to enjoy. We also finally got a big commercial refrigerator in the kitchen which makes party planning so much easier. We had a small Clearance Sale to clear out items rarely or never used to make space. Money raised was given to the HOA. Our Bake Sale at the Fall Bazaar was a huge success with all proceeds split between our Veterans Club and our Community Fund, where we know every nickel will be put to good use both in Cresswind and Hall County.

We are looking forward to a Soup/Chili Night in November. Our Annual meeting was very well attended and with our elections now over, I welcome the new board for the Cooking Club. And thank the three Board members who have “Aged” out - served three years on the board. Rose Micuch has served as treasurer for over three years and her time and efforts are so very appreciated. Linda Gillot has served as secretary for over three years and this club owes her a big “Thank You” for all her hard work. Then I will also be leaving the Board as my time is up. I want to take this time to Thank all our members, especially those who volunteer to work at an event and/or lead an event. It has been an honor and pleasure, and I am looking forward to helping with some of the exciting events planned for next year.

Tennis By Sandy Barmak Our tennis play was interrupted a bit in the early fall as our courts were resurfaced. What a treat it was to return to play on the courts when the work was done! We now look forward to cooler days and longer play time on the courts. Ladies Competitive Tennis at Cresswind continues to grow. Congratulations to the fall 3.0 USTA 65+ team who won the Women’s Division (see pic). October began USTA play for Ladies 3.0 40+ on Fridays, and TWO 55+ teams playing 3.0 ladies on Mondays and will continue until December. The men’s teams also continue to expand. Once again Silverball will continue on Mondays, playing against several local area teams. Three different Senior men’s ALTA teams had successful seasons playing on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Despite facing tough competition, all three teams were vying for the playoffs at the time of this writing. Fall tennis clinics began in late October. Thank you to Bill Papciak for organizing them and his team of instructors for their assistance. The clinics are a great way to sharpen our skills and help “rusty” players get back in the game. For more information on our tennis activities contact our president, Debbie Cortjens at Debbie.cortjens@gmail.com

Social Singles By Elaine Vetter It is time for Chili! Social Singles will be hosting our 2nd Annual Chili Supper Fundraiser on Sunday, October 21st to benefit Gainesville Exploration Academy where many of our members volunteer as mentors. This event will again be open to the whole community and the Assistant principal and School counselor will be in attendance to give more details about how the money will be spent and to accept our donation. Social Singles continue to enjoy a variety of events. Our September started with a potluck in the pavilion on Labor Day and finished with an outing to Oakland Cemetery in Atlanta for “Sunday in the Park”. In between, we had groups who attended the Dragon Boat opening ceremonies at Lake Lanier Olympic Park, a Melissa Etheredge concert at the Gainesville Botanical gardens, lunch group to the “Empty Soup Bowl” luncheon benefiting the North Georgia Food Bank, and a group of cooks enjoying our very first Supper Club. Our upcoming calendar includes bowling, hikes, Supper Club, lunch at a Mexican Restaurant, and a Fall Foliage Scenic Railway Trip from Blue Ridge, GA through the mountains and back. If you are single and looking for new things to do with other single residents, this is a great group to join. Contact Elaine Vetter at elvetter@hotmail.com for more information or to be added to the email list.

Cresswind RV Club By Dave Dittmeier The RV Club did not have any Club trips since the last issue of The Waterfall, but that has not stopped individual Club members from camping. One camper spent a week in Hilton Head, another attended RailFest in Chattanooga, while another spent three weeks in NY state seeing the sights and visiting small towns, and one other took a major swing through the west visiting National Parks. The RV Club is open to any resident who owns or would like to own a Recreational Vehicle. Happy Trails!!

Bowling News: Keep Rolling, Rolling, Rolling By Phil Vinyard The Cresswind Bowling League is well underway and we are having a great time. Scores for men and women are starting to climb as we get back into the swing of things and start finding our groove. We bowl at the Stars and Strikes Bowling Center in Buford close to the Mall of Georgia where we are treated like family. This league is a fun league for all skill levels and each bowler establishes a handicap based upon the cumulative actual game scores. A bowler with an average cumulative score of 100 would have a handicap of 90 pins per game making them very competitive to a person with a cumulative average of 160 who would have a handicap of 36 pins per game. Therefore, if that lower score person bowls a 110 game, they will easily beat the higher average bowler. So, regardless of skill level, folks who have not bowled for years enjoy the light exercise, camaraderie, competition, getting to know other residents, and of course, my personal favorite, lunch after bowling. Our league will bowl you over!

Shalom Club Travels By Harriet & Dan Gershkowitz

On September 24, 2018, the Shalom Club planned a trip for Cresswind residents to the 6 Million Paper Clips Museum in Whitwell, TN. This started in the late 1990s as an eighth-grade project on diversity and tolerance and evolved into a regional Holocaust Learning Center and Museum in a town of 1700 people a mere 100 miles away from where the KKK was started. A miracle truly happened in this town, and we were fortunate to have experienced the result. It remains an eighth-grade project and the students were our guides. To quote attendees: “Amazing experience.” “Something I will remember for a long time.” “Standing in the car with 20 other people with the door open was very hot. Being in there with 80-110 people with the door closed is unimaginable.” “Seeing the jacket on display that two people had worn in a concentration camp, one getting it unwashed after another had died in it touched me.” ‘I was honored to be there with each one. I knew very little about the entire project.” “It was humbling and heart breaking to realize in a very real way, the injustice of the Holocaust.” “There is no way to wrap my head around the magnitude of evil. Many blessings for the middle school students and teachers as they help to change the world one step at a time.” “This was a life changing experience. We have been to the Holocaust Museums, concentration camp, and other memorials. However, this one was different because it showed that we all, no matter how small, can make a difference. We truly can change the world, one person at a time.” There are 11 million clips in the museum to honor the Jews, gypsies, Jehovah’s witnesses, disabled, homosexuals, and Catholic priests and other Catholics who spoke against the regime. The museum is one of the cars that carried the people to the concentration camps and the gas chambers. Whitwell Middle School has given those 11 million souls a resting place. Anyone wanting information regarding the Shalom Group contact Harriet or Dan Gershkowitz at thegershs@aol.com.

Neighborhood Theatre Production Not To Be Missed! By Wayne Blum

Get ready folks! Be sure you have your tickets. The Cresswind Neighborhood Theatres’s production of “Present Laughter” will run from November 8th through November 11th. It will be directed by our own Scott Larson. The cast and production team have been working hard to ensure a great evening of entertainment! This play was written by Noel Coward and had tremendous success on Broadway and internationally. Kevin Kline won a Tony award recently for his portrayal of the lead character Garry Essendine. Be sure to arrive early for free wine and refreshments in the Fitness Lounge provided by Jeffrey Sulka of Edwards Jones Financial Services. Jeffrey has graciously done so for several years now. These past and future productions are not possible

Page 44 | The Waterfall | November/December

without the combined efforts of actors, costume designers, set decorators, chorus, dancers, house management, and many other volunteers. If you are new to the neighborhood or have been around for some time and want to get involved with the theater, please contact Wayne Blum at theblums@charter. net. No experience is necessary. If you do not want to try acting, there is plenty to do “behind the scenes”. This year, 2018, promises to be another successful year for the Cresswind Neighborhood Theatre. Do not miss this production and the opportunity to see your talented neighbors!

Casino Night was a blast! Many residents exclaimed, “Best Cresswind event ever!” “When’s the next one?” People were actively playing at the tables when the final call was made. There were so many prizes worth thousands of dollars. The hors d’oeuvres served residents by waiters throughout the evening were fantastic. Thanks to our sponsors who donated food and donated prizes so participating residents received $2 to $3 of goods and services for each donated dollar of admission. This was a major bargain for attendees and provided a springboard for soliciting the city’s businesses f o r donations for the charity. All in all, it was a fun night as the 2nd floor was filled with residents enjoying the play money and interacting with each other. A great big “thank you” goes to those who supported the Hurricane Florence relief effort for North Carolina and South Carolina as well as again supporting the Veterans’ ninth semi-annual food drive for the needy here in greater Hall County. The annual coat and blanket drive will again be held in November; details to follow. Check us out at www.cresswindveterans.org or, better yet, join us.

Now is the Time to Take a Hike

By Bill Dickey Fall is a great time to walk our nature trails. There is a crispness in the air, some of the critters are hibernating, and the leaves are turning from green to bright orange, red and yellow. Acorns from the chestnut oaks may make some paths tricky, so just be aware. The trail Club is color coding the walking sticks- red for Cardinal, blue for Bluebird etc.- so when possible, leave the stick in the rack at the trail sign and pick up another one at the next trail head if you are walking more than one trail. (Goldfinch sticks can be left at the Cardinal rack below the Club.) Hopefully, this will prevent the walking sticks from ending up at one or two racks. It is very satisfying to hear comments on how much residents enjoy hiking our trails, and that the nature trails were one of the reasons they chose Cresswind. …....And into the forest I go, to lose my mind, and find my soul. -Anonymous
