From the Community Manager

Increased Activity By: Gary Hulion

The HOA has seen a very active couple of months with new residents and all sorts of activities. As the summer winds down, I wanted to take time to remind each of you that it takes the entire community to make this association work. The Board of Directors along with the office staff do their part to make sure that we work within our budget and maintain costs every day. I am asking for your assistance in doing your part to help maintain these costs. Make sure when entering or leaving the clubhouse all doors are securely fastened and closed. Make sure lights are turned off, as some of these are on time delayed sensors and will go off automatically. Make sure any unsafe conditions are reported to the front desk. Although the Tennis Center is on a timer, if you leave before the lights time out, go ahead and shut them off. By doing this, you save lots of kilowatts and expenses.

From the

Name tags continue to plague the front desk. While the majority of residents wear their name tags, we still cannot seem to gain complete compliance. Owners still complain that they do not know everyone and especially at night feel uncomfortable not knowing if folks are really residents. The idea that management is not around and it is ok, just simply should not be the case. Everyone should feel comfortable about their surroundings and those around them. Please wear your name tag anytime you are utilizing the amenities. Finally, a note should have been received concerning budgeting needs for 2018. Any and all clubs should submit these fund requests prior to November 1st to be considered for the upcoming budget. Thanks to each of you that go the extra mile to make Cresswind a wonderful place to work, live, and play!

Architectural Review Committee (ARC)…

By: John Stevens

The Mission and Purpose of the Architectural Review Committee (ARC) is to preserve and enhance the aesthetic qualities of our community for the collective enjoyment of all current and future homeowners while protecting and growing the value of our homes.

That all ORNAMENTATION (including statues, sculptures, bird baths, flower pots, wind chimes, swings, benches, arbors, trellises, etc.) attached to the outside of your home or placed on your lawn or in your shrub bed require review and approval of the ARC…

Did you know… That the CRESSWIND COMMUNITY CHARTER requires that all homeowners request approval from the ARC prior to starting any exterior modification to your home or property…

That the LANDSCAPE COMMITTEE, separate from the ARC, needs to review and approve all changes and modifications to your lawn and plant beds…

Learn more about how to personalize and enhance your outside living space by visiting www.cresswindll.com and clicking on ‘Committees’. September/October | The Waterfall | Page 5

Covey “7 Habits” Workshop at Cresswind Begins on November 1st By: Ken Levine Beginning on November 1st, Ken Levine will facilitate Stephen Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective People at Cresswind. The workshop sessions will be held in the Computer Room from 7:30-9:30 pm for 7 weeks. The cost per participant will be $10 to cover notebooks provided. Treat yourself to this timeless personal leadership material from Stephen Covey while getting to know some of your neighbors! Get some valuable input and tools to help you with decisions about what to do with the rest of your life, how to manage your time better, how to be a better listener, and how to repair a broken relationship with someone you care about. A testimonial from a former participant: “My first thought when I started this class was to wish I had taken it 20 years ago. I questioned what use it would be now. I sure found out. I made a weekly calendar including this most important thing, “my time”. I made a list of things I want to do or accomplish during the rest of my life, and learned ways to improve relationships with family and friends. It is definitely time well spent.” Please contact Ken Levine if you are interested in attending this workshop.

Bible Study

By: Dave Dittmeier

Since the last issue of The Waterfall, the women studied Christ Pre-Figured in Old Testament Characters and the men went through the Alpha Course. The Bible Study Club also continued its monthly non-denominational program. In July, we hosted Rev. Dave Fahner, Pastor of Trinity Presbyterian Church. During this patriotic celebration, veterans and their wives were recognized. In August, Jonathan Howes, Pastor of Graystone Community Church was the guest speaker. Rev. Msgr. Barona of St. Michael’s Catholic Church was hosted in September. The monthly presentation is held the first Sunday of the month (except for December). All Cresswind residents are welcome.

Our third season of the Cresswinders Bowling League began on September 6th at our new location, Stars and Strikes in Buford. We bowl each Wednesday at 10 am at a cost of $10 per week per bowler. Every bowler establishes their average and handicap during the first week of bowling, and it is adjusted based upon each week’s scores. We have all levels of skill among our bowlers and the league is for men and women of Cresswind. It is a great opportunity to get to know other folks and bowling is usually followed up with lunch with one of the many offerings in Buford. Come and watch, join up as a sub or get on a team.

What’s Cooking?? The Cooking Club has so much going on, the membership has climbed to almost 700 residents. The big news is that the Cookbook is complete and has gone to the printer, and you will be able to buy them during the October Vendor Fair. A huge thanks to all that contributed their favorite recipes since the book has over 600 family recipes and a huge Thank You to Judy Brannan and team for all the hard work.

By: Paula King We are a busy fun club and so easy to join - $5.00 per person per year. Just drop a check in our mailbox at the rear of the clubhouse lobby on the right-hand side. Please put membership in the memo line and add your email address. We announce all our meetings and events through our website - so what are you waiting for, best five bucks you’ll ever spend :)

In August, Fun with Food’s Floozy Ball was an amazing Girls’ Night out! Thanks, Sheran Connolly- what a blast. Then we had a Grill and Ale Party headed by David Jones, A Tisket- a Tasket bring your own basket- for a Pool and Patio end of summer party with grilling and meeting up with friends and making new friends. Healthy Eating with Karen Smith continues to be one of our most anticipated small group events. So watch your email for what she is up to next. Cooking Class with Carol Cain is also a very popular event, sells out almost immediately, but the problem is getting people to teach a favorite recipe or demonstrate some kitchen tools or cooking tips. I know we have really great cooks in Cresswind so please consider teaching a class, maybe cake decorating, or presentation of dishes or favorite recipe. Dinner group headed by Karen Silverthorn is gearing up for their fall and winter in home dinners. Coming soon is a Soup Night, Not your Mama’s Grilled Cheese Sandwich, Bake Sale, and the biggie Oktoberfest.

Fishing Club

By: Toby Kelley

We had seven captains volunteer to take the members out for a “group fish”- most boats caught fish and everyone had a good time. We are still catching crappie on minnows and spotted bass on drop shot and top water in our cove. There has been lots of activity at our Cresswind aquarium each night after dark- bring your grandchildren and a flashlight (the walkway is a little dark) to the activity platform on Dock D to see what is happening with the fish- always interesting. The striped bass have all moved near the dam to be in deep cold water- our dedicated big fish fishermen are making the trip south to catch them. Here is a picture of the most unusual fish caught on our group fish(you may have to look carefully to find the fish). Glenn says you have to be good to feel the ones this size when they take the bait.

Garden Club

By: Bob Rivers

The Garden Club has been very busy this summer with a program on modifying your home landscape and a trip to the State Botanical Gardens and the Trial Gardens at the University of Georgia campus in Athens. Thirty-eight members and residents participated in a day-long trip to the gardens and a commercial landscape design center in Athens. We could only visit a portion of the State Botanical Gardens in the time allotted. The tour guides were excellent and gardens were outstanding! We plan to go back. Many thanks to Melanie Altman, Treasurer, for organizing the trip. Since the Club took a vacation in August, our next meeting will be Tuesday, September 12th at 3 pm in the Ballroom. The program will be “Put your garden to bed”. Another trip is planned for October 10th to see the incredible fall flora at Gibbs Gardens in Ball Ground. Come join us!!

Cresswind LL Community Fund

By: Bob Rivers

Mid-year grant awards were announced at the June 22nd quarterly meeting of the Fund. Grants were awarded to the Georgia Golden Olympics, The Guest House, the Quinlan Visual Arts Center, and the Senior Life Center. A ballroom sound system upgrade was given to the Community Association. Dana Chapman from the Guest House and Phillippa Moss from the Senior Life Center thanked the Fund for their generous donations. Kudos to Cresswind Singles and Solos Interest Group for mounting the “Help Me Please” project together with the Fund. The project netted the Fund $1400. The money was given by residents who had their work done by resident volunteers. Thanks to the volunteers who did the work! Fall projects include another “Help Me Please” event and a “Personal Care Products Drive”. For more information, contact Cathy Hoskinson, President. Our next quarterly membership meeting is September 21st at 4:00 pm. Our website is: www.cresswindcommunityfund.org.

The Genealogy Club is now over 100 members and we continue to grow. There is a MISCONCEPTION this club is only for advanced genealogy research, but this is not true. Club membership spans from novices who have not created a family tree to individuals who have been researching their families for decades. This is a helping and sharing club. Our only purpose is to assist and guide each other in our research. Recent meeting topics have included “key board functions”, “Saving and organizing Documents & Photographs”, discussing the purpose of the Cresswind Genealogy Facebook page, and the ever entertaining “Investigative Research Assignment” where a club member shares a brick wall and the club tries to break down that wall through research. The Genealogy Club is open to all members of the community, whether you are just curious as to who may be in your family tree or whether to leave a legacy for your family

Cresswind Kayak Club (CKC) What a great kayak paddling adventure we had on the Etowah River thanks to Cresswinders Gregg Hilger and Mark Johnson, our seasoned guides. Nine of us paddled (with the current) 9+ miles down this gentle, easy flowing river. Some great scenery surrounded us the entire way, including several train bridges long abandoned. We even heard some wild hogs grunting just out of sight along the shoreline. Meanwhile, on our own Lake Lanier, Saturday morning group paddles continue to be hosted and guided by several seasoned CKC members. These 75-90-minute outings leave from

Performing Arts Club

By: Roy Gogel

The Performing Arts Club had an amazing spring. Both Chorus and Theatre had terrific events and are now preparing for their performances later this year. We are expanding the opportunities for you to become involved and to enjoy yourself! The Small Bands subset started and is gathering momentum! Dust off your instrument and come join us. The same with Play scripts, another relatively new group that enjoys reading them and then visiting local performances. The Variety Show is open to everyone and is returning Friday, Sept 22nd and Saturday, Sept 23rd; sign up now. We added TV games as another fun option. Family Feud’s debut was a smashing success! The Sound team won (see photo). Friday, Sept 29th will be a new and different game - Liars Club. It is a lot of fun! Come and join us. For more details about Performing Arts, visit www. cresswindpa.com.

Reading a Script Can Be Fun! By: Marilyn Young

The Playscript Reader’s Group is a sub-group of the Cresswind Performing Arts Club. It is unique in that members read and share their insights by reviewing a playscript rather than a book. A variety of genres are explored - tragedies, mysteries, comedies, dramas - something for everybody. This year a new dimension has been added. As often as possible, a playscript is chosen which corresponds to a live performance being presented in our area an playscript members may choose to attend followed by a brief critique at the next meeting. Meetings are held on the third Tuesday of every other month at 3 pm. The final meetings in 2017 are September 19th discussing Macbeth by William Shakespeare followed by a field trip to a live performance at the Shakespeare Tavern sometime in October, and on November 21st discussing Blithe Spirit by Noel Coward with the option to see the live play at the Winder-Barrow Theater. By: Rich Lynt The Veterans Support Club is open to all residents that support the Club’s mission to help the needy and homeless in greater Hall County, primarily Veterans and their families. The Club operates in conjunction with its charity arm, Cresswind LL Veterans Inc, as mandated by the HOA Board. Residents are a member of the Club; donations and disbursements are through the 501(c)(3) charity. Club members provided excess Cresswind furniture to a divorced 9-year Army Veteran woman with two daughters (ages 5 & 10). Their furniture basically consisted of two mattresses, a TV, and a carpet. With your help, we furnished her apartment. Thank you Cresswind for your donations!

CRESSWIND RESIDENT, Madeline Wirt, would like to introduce to you her law partners, John Gram and Cara Mitchell, who specialize in Estate Planning. With a combined 55 years of experience, John and Cara bring a wealth of knowledge and expertise to their practice. Comprehensive estate planning advice often involves far more than basic documents such as a will, trust, financial power of attorney and advance directive for health care. Our estate planning group provides strategic planning services tailored to individual wishes and objectives, as well as review and update of your existing documents.

As part of the Cresswind Performing Arts Club, the Cresswind Band group provides a social, non-judgmental medium through which people of all musical skill levels can find support and encouragement for rediscovering their long-forgotten instrument and the enjoyment of playing music with others…in pairs, triplets, quartets, or small groups. What kind of instrument you used to play is not important, and how well you can play it is not important. What is important is that you rediscover the fun and enjoyment that playing music can bring into your life and into the lives of others. Imagine sharing in the struggle to convert ‘noise’ into music with 1, 2, 3 or more fellow Cresswinders and finding that through mutual support and encouragement that noise suddenly becomes recognizable as music, reflecting the contributions of everyone playing together. Maybe at first, the music is very simple and basic, but then as your confidence and skill grows the complexity and caliber of the music does also, elevating further everyone’s fun, enjoyment, and sense of accomplishment.
