From the Community Manager

Happy Fall! As the weather and time change approaches, I would like to remind each of you about the change in our office hours. Beginning November 5th, our office hours will be from 9 -5pm each day. We change from Daylight Savings time on this same day and run our clocks back 1 hour on Saturday morning at 2:00 am. It really does not seem like I have been here a year, but on October 14th, I will celebrate one year with you all. Now for some it might seem like a lifetime, but my hope is that I have brought about some good changes to the Association and helped, especially the Board begin the process of Transition as a Community. The Board has put forth a tremendous effort to maintain our budget which in turns helps in keeping our assessments down. Many of you have expressed a desire to see more activity around the complex while others feel we already have too much. Wherever you stand in the process, I assure you that we are doing everything we can to meet those request and not impact the budget. We had an unexpected visitor in September by the name of IRMA that really could have caused a lot of damage, but fortunately we were spared the wrath. Other than very minimal structural damage, our worst problem was trees. We had over 300 trees damaged or uprooted but feel fairly certain that we have accounted for and are very close to having most back up or removed. As a Reminder: I still get a lot of complaints about underage drivers in the community especially over the weekends. You are jeopardizing your rights to use a golf cart if you continue

From the

this practice. You are also jeopardizing our Association Liability policy as well. Remember your cart must be registered to operate within the streets of Cresswind and all drivers must be a licensed driver. Please see the front desk about how to register your cart.

Gary Hulion

Be a good neighbor. Please pick up after your pets when off of Community Manager your lot. It is irresponsible of you to allow your pet to go onto other member’s property and relieve themselves. Much less if you do not pick up after them. It is also disrespectful to allow your pet to use the common areas for the same purpose if you are not picking up after them. There are dog stations throughout the community and should be utilized. Our rules and regulations state that you are allowed two dogs per household and they must be registered. Please see Carolyn at the front desk if you pet is not registered. Lots of fun activities are being planned for the next few months. Come see what is going on and get involved. There is so much to do that you are bound to like something. No matter how educated, talented, rich or cool you believe you are, how you treat people ultimately tells all. INTEGRITY IS EVERYTHING.

AMENITIES WORK-GROUP (AWG)...

The Amenities Work-Group (AWG) was established by the Transition Committee this past September to systematically and objectively consider how amenity space here at Cresswind might be re-purposed, modified, reconfigured, and/or expanded in an effort to optimize its functionality and usage in support of our trending, emerging, and continuing lifestyle values and activities. Each build-out phase of Cresswind (1 through 3-C) is represented by the nine people appointed to the AWG. An additional 25 Cresswind residents have volunteered their time and skills to help support this work effort, to include providing additional insight and perspective from their own neighbors and social networks. In fulfilling its mandate from

By: John Stevens

the Transition Committee, the AWG will also consider input from the Engineering Feasibility Study that is currently underway, and prepare several recommendations and options to the Transition Committee by early January 2018. Towards that end, the AWG and its cohort of volunteers will be, among other things, speaking directly with Club and Committee chairs, residents-at-large, and reviewing other comparable 55+ active adult communities. A community-wide survey will also be conducted in an effort to gather input from every individual Cresswind resident. To reach the AWG with questions or comments, email: amenitiesstudyworkgroup@gmail.com November/December | The Waterfall | Page 5

Board of Directors Review

By: Dave Binnix

In February 2018 at the Annual Home Owners Meeting, the Board will report to the owners on all the accomplishments completed in 2017. In addition, each publication of The Waterfall newsletter will contain a report from the Board recapping the issues and decisions made since the previous publication. In the past two months, your board: a. Met with the Transition Committee on multiple occasions as we move toward setting the criteria for transition. These meetings including a rewrite of our Amenities Policy, review of our Charter and the Operating Procedures, review of governance as it applies to the 2018 election of a new board, evaluation of the peripheral properties including engineering studies. b. Met with the Rules and Regulations committee as they continue to work on making our rules and regulations easier to understand and up to date. c. Met with our Property Manager Gary Hulion as we made decisions on coping with storms and cleanup. Made additional decisions concerning tree removals, delinquencies, clubhouse rules, Corp of Engineer issues, security (cameras on Montgomery Road Entrance), approved the installation of carpet replacement in our health club and authorized Golf Cart Community signs. d. Established a new policy of Open Board Meetings for total transparency. e. Authorized Treasurer and General Manager to complete the initial submission of our 2018 budget and provided appropriate monthly financial statements. f. Attended several HOA training sessions sponsored by First Service. g. Met with the owners and management team of MTS on multiple issues to establish satisfactory resolutions on many areas of concern. h. Met with Kolter’s Property Manager, Bob Rademacher to discuss transition issues. i. Reviewed Life Style program with Mark LaClaire including submission of full financial disclosures. j. Completed the requirement of HOPA compliance. k. Met with multiple residents to resolve property issues. As you can see, your board has been extremely busy working with 15 committees and over 70 clubs/interest groups. We are very honored to have so many dedicated residents that give of their time and talents working on committees to accomplishing so much. We wish the entire Cresswind family a Happy Thanksgiving and a wonderful Holiday season! Your Board of Directors

1st Cresswind Book Fair!

From Judy Pallo and the Cresswind Book Clubs

Every time the combined book clubs (of which there are 13) invite a well published author to speak to our community the event has been very successful. Our most recent Author event, held September 9, 2017, was no exception. This time we invited published Cresswind residents to participate and were pleasantly surprised to learn we have 8 such neighbors (unfortunately one could not attend.) They displayed their books, the crowd came, and 74 books were sold! They ranged in categories from books for children, science, history, fiction, photography, sports etc. There were also three other tables to interest the public: “Writers in the Wind”, “Friends of the Cresswind Library” and a sign-up table to become a member of a book club. It was very gratifying to see the excitement in the room. Watch for future author events. Page 14 | The Waterfall | November/December

Cresswind Bowlers Are Back! By: Phil Vinyard The Cresswinders Bowling League has completed its first month of bowling in our new Buford location. The drive has not been an issue since most teams are carpooling and there are many more choices for lunch following bowling. Currently two teams are tied for first place, the Kingpins and the Unbowlievables, with 21 out of a possible 28 points. The Kingpins is comprised of Dan Skeels, Janice Miles, Bob Bobkowski and Chris Gumpert. The Unbowlievables is comprised of Ciro DeSaro, Vence Rollins, Tom Stagl, and

Alan Weinberg. Now both teams have a bulls-eye squarely on their backs for all the other teams to shoot for. High actual scratch games thus far are: Men – Jim Cook – 226 and Women – Dawn Hurley – 169. High scratch series for Men – Jim Selbitschka – 583 and Women – Carol Weiss – 469. One of our most popular bowlers is Blanche Martin showing her top form as she prepares to throw another strike ball.

The Dinner Group is in its 6th year and is in full swing! All members please note remaining dinner dates: November 4th, February 18th and March 18th. November’s dinner will have a mid-west twist. A 1920’s menu is set for February and the final meal of the season in March will be a ‘white’ theme. Join the Dinner Group and enjoy interesting dishes while meeting new neighbors around an elegant dinner table. Anyone can join at any time during the year. Dinner participants are assigned a portion of the meal to prepare and all recipes are provided. Food and beverage costs (average $35 - $55 per pair/couple) are shared equally among participants at each house. There are 4 couples/ pairs of people assigned to a house. Each dinner, residents are rotated so members will always meet new neighbors. If you are interested in joining the Dinner Group, email the coordinator, Karen Silverthorn, silk3349@charter.net to be added to the Dinner Group email list. There are no fees for Dinner Group, but you must be a paid member of the Cooking Club. Guidelines for the Dinner Group are posted on the Cooking Club website. Come join the fun – every meal is an adventure!

Thank you We would like to express our sincere appreciation to our Cresswind neighbors who so kindly offered condolences and sent cards after the deaths this year of both of Kathy’s parents (also Cresswind residents). Having very elderly parents close by was such a comfort and convenience. If you are considering a similar arrangement, contact mikeinga30504@gmail.com regarding this single level Ashford home.

Fishing Club

By: Toby Kelley

As the lake temperature cools the fish are moving again- and the top water bite is back on- always a great time of year for Cresswind fishermen. Our crappie fishermen helped run a fishing event for 100 kids - a fun day. We continue to have occasional informal “group fish” events thanks to our volunteer captains. To get on the club list, email John Kelley. Speaking of crappie fishing, check out Dave Cureton’s monster crappie caught in our cove.

Garden Club

By: Bob Rivers

The Garden Club has been very busy this fall with a program on “Putting your Garden to Bed” by Michael Wheeler, Cooperative Extension Agent. We also organized a Gibbs Gardens Tour to Ball Ground, Ga. in October. Forty members and residents participated in a day-long trip to the Gardens and Amicalola Falls State Park nearby. We had the opportunity to see a “Birds of Prey” hands-on presentation at the Falls. Many thanks to Melanie Altman, Treasurer, for again organizing the trip! The next meeting of the Garden Club will be Tuesday, November 14th at 3 pm in the ballroom. The program will be presented by a representative from the Garden Center at Home Depot.

The Club will hold an

annual holiday celebration at our meeting on Tuesday, December 12th. We welcome all Cresswind residents to attend our meetings and join our Club for a yearly fee of $5

Cresswind Kayak Club (CKC) By: John Stevens For 2017, membership in the Cresswind Kayak Club (CKC) has reached nearly 180 members. That is an incredible statement of interest and participation in the recreational, leisure-sport of kayaking here at Cresswind, especially given that Mother Nature had failed earlier in the year to put enough water in the Lake to allow safe, easy access by Cresswind kayakers. While waiting for Mother Nature to correct her ‘oversight’, several non-paddling CKC socials gave all Cresswinders a chance to meet and mingle with their kayaking neighbors. With water levels back to normal and the opportunity for novice/beginner kayakers to receive personalized instruction from seasoned CKC members, the Cresswind Kayak Club continues to provide an enjoyable, easy way for new Cresswinders to find and build those friendships that help make Cresswind “a most enjoyble place to live”. Looking forward to 2018, the CKC will continue to plan and organize group paddles for all levels of kayaking skill and experience as well some non-paddling events that will help bring Cresswinders together, regardless of their interest in kayaking.

Pickleball Club By: Gary Crawford

The Cresswind Pickleball Club has continued to grow throughout the summer due in part to a great training program run by Wendy O’Hanlon. Novice training is at court 7 on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of the month from 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm. Come out and try it. Warning - it can be addictive. A Fall 2.5 Novice Tournament was played under the lights on Sunday, October 1st. It was the first pickleball tournament for most, if not all of the participants. After spirited, fun round robin play, First Place was won by Linda Merritt with Second Place being Carl Kologinczak. Runnersup were Don Johansen and Vickie Johnson. It was difficult to determine who had more fun, the players or the crowd. The final 2017 Fall Classic Pickleball Tournament was held on Saturday, October 28th at 8:30 am. Next, join the group for a fantastic Holiday party in December.

Tennis Club News

By: Sandy Barmack The Fitness Lounge was the place to be for tennis buffs the afternoon of September 10th as the Tennis Club hosted a social to watch the Men’s finals of the US Open. At times there was more socializing than watching as the group feasted on drinks, appetizers and desserts. Rafael Nadel overwhelmed his opponent, Kevin Anderson to win his sixteenth Grand Slam titled. A special thank you to Judy Mota for organizing the event and doing much of the shopping. It has been a busy season for tennis. Mixed doubles open play continues on Tuesday and Friday at 9 am, men play on Wednesdays at 9 and women on Thursdays at 9. We are also planning open play on Sunday afternoons at 2 pm to enable those who work to get out and play. Cresswind’s first ALTA team of 25 “experienced” players, called the Cresswind Experience, led by Bill Papciak (billpapciak@gmail.com), is leading their Division with an eye on the playoffs. The 22 men who participated in the Silverball League enjoyed an active fall playing against Chateau Elan, Deaton Creek and Sterling on the Lake subdivisions. If you would like to participate in the spring season, contact Dan Skeels at dan.skeels@hotmail. com. The tennis club is grateful to our president, Debbie Cortjens, for generously donating three covered benches for our tennis courts. The shade they provide will be greatly appreciated next summer. Whether you have played tennis in your previous community or played tennis in the past and feel rusty, we encourage you to come out and join us. I tis great weather for tennis. For more information contact Debbie Cortjens at debbie.cortjens@gmail.com. Page 44 | The Waterfall | November/December

Bill Papciak recently competed and won two Gold Medals in Tennis singles and doubles at the 35th Annual Georgia Golden Olympics held in Warner-Robins, GA. (Bill shown here with wife Pam).

What’s Happening

Cresswind LL Veterans Inc By: Roy Gogel A Priest called inquiring, “I understand you help Veterans. We received a call from a Veteran new to town with an apartment in three days, but he needs a roof for two nights for himself, his wife, and his daughter. Can you help?” We did, thanks to you. The Silent Auction fundraiser along with the generosity of sponsors like Realtor Debbie Cortjens, jewelry owner Brigitte Miesch, Milton Martin Honda, and others who made donations to the charity provide the funding for our Touching Lives, One at a Time purpose, reaching needy and homeless individuals across the greater Hall County, particularly Veterans and their families. We sent two tractor trailers with food, water, and medical supplies to hurricane hit regions - one to Texas and one to Florida. Checks annotated Hurricane Relief go to that. Information concerning donations is at cresswindveterans.org or deposit a check in the mailbox in the Clubhouse.

What’s Cooking?? By: Paula King

The Cresswind Cooking Club is keeping plenty busy after an Amazing Oktoberfest run by our incredible Grill and Ale Sub group headed by David Jones. Plans for great things are already in the works for Super Bowl Sunday and spring events. Fun with Food has a November event night planned that is a little different from our regular Soup night. We will be having Casseroles in addition to Soup - YUM!!! They are busy planning upcoming events and need some help from the membership. So next time you see a planning meeting, try to attend and work on events, a great way to get to know more people. Healthy Eating, Leader Karen Smith, meets once a month and has been a Big Success - every meeting “sells out” quickly so when you see the announcement better hurry. In addition to the monthly demos, they are planning a Healthy Eating Dinner .... details to come. Cooking Class is always looking for people to teach a new food or method of preparing food and even things like cake decoration, or food presentation. After a couple very successful wine and appetizer pairings, we plan to have more due to demand. Phyllo Dough 101 - super fun. Upcoming, we will have Sea Food Chowder, Paella, Pumpkin Rolls and Holiday Treats. Carol Cain is the Head of this sub group and contact her regarding teaching a class. Come be part of this large and fun club. $5.00 per year per person. What a Deal! Page 50 | The Waterfall | November/December

By: Dave Dittmeier The Genealogy Club is now over 100 members strong and we continue to grow with new research information being shared at our monthly meetings. Some recent topics have included: Searching for Probate Records, Historic Georgia Newspapers, Saving Documents and Photographs, Dispelling Research Myths, Researching Names with Spelling Errors, and the ever entertaining and challenging Investigative Research Assignment where a club member shares a brick wall and the club tries to break down that wall through research. The Genealogy Club is open to all members of the community, whether you are just curious as to who may be in your family tree or whether to leave a legacy for your family. Club membership spans from novices who haven’t created a family tree to individuals who have been researching their families for decades. This is a helping and sharing club. Our only purpose is to assist and guide each other in our research.

You might be a genealogist if... ... you’re good at locating dead people.

Singles & Solos By: Janet Nelson

Our membership is still growing, as we now have over 170 on our email list! Most of our summer activities consisted of outdoor picnics at the Cresswind Pavilion, where we ate and played outdoor games. Another favorite was “boating with Bob,” in which one of our members who owns a boat took interested participants on the scenic routes to various local lakeside restaurants. Sue McCormick organized a unique event, in which some of us went to Roswell to participate in an “Escape Room” which required following a set of clues. In October, we had a Chili Cookoff to see who makes the best chili. To learn more, email me at: jerryvolante@yahoo.com
