From the Community Manager
From the desk of Gary Hulion We are off to a great new year. The Annual Meeting was very successful and three new members were elected. Dave Binnix, Barbara Conley and Dave Uhler’s terms expired in January and the three new members elected were Bill Bohn, Sid Jacobs and Robin Riegel. The officers for the 2018 Board of Directors are Ron Micuch, Chair; Jim Albers, Vice Chair; Robin Riegel, Secretary; and Debbie Ellis, Treasurer. Frank Boduch, Bill Bohn and Sid Jacobs will serve as members at large. As always, the Board of Directors meetings are open to the membership and each of you are encouraged to attend and stay informed. If you would like to address the Board, information will be sent out in advance of each meeting giving anyone the opportunity to have a topic discussed. Board meetings are held the third Wednesday of each month at 1:00PM in the Cresswind Clubhouse Ballroom. If you are one of those who do not like to speak in public, you can shoot me a line and I will make sure it gets addressed. We are still having a BIG issue with speeding vehicles and residents and vendors going the wrong direction in the Roundabouts. I cannot express enough that, in the event, you cause an accident in the roundabout by going the wrong direction, not only do you risk seriously injuring yourself or someone else, but the civil action that is brought against you will cost you a fortune. As for the speedsters in the community, the
one call I never want to get is the one informing me that a pedestrian has been run over. Again, the cost to you could financially ruin you. Assessments are based on a quarterly increments. The assessments are due on the 1st day of each quarter, January, April, July and October. They are considered late after the 15th of that same month. If you pay monthly, you will be charged a late fee for Gary Hulion the unpaid portion of that quarterly assessment. The reason for this is our financial obligations and Budget is set up for that period. Failure by any party to pay on time impacts our ability to pay our obligations. The Board agreed to allow a one-time waiver of fees per household each year. They understand that things happen, but chronic late payments affect the community financials. We have a lot of activities on the calendar. Please buy your tickets early to avoid missing these great events. Two phrases we do not say enough “I Love “and “I Am Sorry”. My wife reminds me of this each day when I leave and she says “I am sorry I love you”.

Landscape Committee By Meg Bohn
From the
Architectural Review Committee (ARC)… By: John Stevens
The Landscape Committee is made up of volunteer residents with some knowledge of plants, gardening, landscaping and what grows in Georgia! Our mission is to support the community’s Property Manager and Board in all things related to the landscapes of our neighborhood. As purely an advisory committee, we seek to assist residents in changing or managing their landscapes by reviewing all landscape change applications. Residents can help us by completing the landscape applications in full, including a legible list of plants, a drawing that shows both existing plants and proposed new plants, as well as property lines and a plat of the property. The plat shows us where any easements or drainage areas exist and is important information for all homeowners to have on hand. We look forward to serving both the Board and the Community in 2018.

Such a path is for walking safely from front to rear yards and cannot exceed 30” in width. Paths for golf cart use are NOT PERMITTED; PERGOLAS on decks are allowed with prior approval from the ARC. Hollywood Has the Oscars, Golden Globes, Grammys and Such,
BUT CRESSWIND HAS ... In January, Carolyn O’Camb was recognized by other FirstService staff for her abilities in Building Great Relationships. This is one of the corner stones and foundations that FirstService Residential is built on. Besides building Great Relationships, we believe that Aiming High, Doing What’s Right, Owning It, Improving It, and Being Genuinely Helpful creates the management company we are. Carolyn makes every effort to speak to everyone that comes in the Clubhouse, even when she does not feel good. She always tries to make everyone feel welcome. Carolyn goes above and beyond to make sure that all residents’ questions are answered and she provides the best assistance she can. If you see Carolyn, please extend a congratulation her for job well done. Thanks, Carolyn.

And Still Another One… Our Community Manager, Gary Hulion, won the “Aim High” award recently from FirstService Residential. This is part of their motto and Gary is always exemplifying it in his everyday actions. Way to go, Gary!
National Recognition for Mark and Kolter! In January, at the NAHB (National Association of Home Builders) International Builders Show in Orlando, Cresswind at Lake Lanier was presented with THREE Silver National Awards. Kolter Homes received the Silver award for Detached Home, 2001-2500 sq. ft. Laurel Model. The National Association of Home Builders’ members construct about 80% of the new homes built in the United States, both single-family and multifamily. NAHB represents more than 140,000 members with about one-third being home builders and remodelers. The rest work in closely related specialties such as sales and marketing, housing finance, and manufacturing and supplying building materials. This conference was attended by over 140,000 people. Our own Lifestyle Director, Mark LaClaire, walked away with two very prestigious awards, one Silver for Lifestyle Director of the Year, then another Silver for Lifestyle Program of the Year! We know he is spectacular but to be honored nationally is exceptional. We are very proud if you, Mark!

Bible Study
By: Dave Dittmeier
Since the last issue of The Waterfall, the Women’s Bible Study delved into the Minor Prophets, while the Men’s Bible Study participated in a study and discussion of the Book of Proverbs. The Club continued its monthly non-denominational gatherings with Rev. Rob Bruce from McEver Road United Methodist Church and Rev. Lee Koontz of First Presbyterian as guest speakers. The Club also held a joint meeting with the Cresswind Shalom Group where Rabbi Levi Mentz of Congregation Beth Israel shared various aspects of the Jewish Faith and answered questions. Several Couples Bible Studies continue to abound throughout Cresswind and meet in private homes in the community. Women’s Bible Study meets every Thursday at 4 pm and the Men’s group meets every Friday at 10 am.

Bowling Club
By: Phil Vinyard
Our season is starting its final push with just ten bowling weeks remaining. The leaderboard currently shows two teams tied for first place and four teams tied for second place, which will make these final weeks very exciting. All of the other teams will be trying hard to knock the leaders down from where they are. Of course, all of this is in great fun as everyone wants to see all bowlers, even teams they are bowling against, do well. This year we will have a large pool of prize money to distribute to the teams and individual leaders at our banquet on April 11th. For example, our men’s scratch game leader is Jim Selbitchka with a high game of 247 and for the women’s scratch game, the leader is Patricia Corkern with a 189. The banquet is when the prize money is distributed and when everyone brings a dish to share. Spouses are invited to attend and everyone leaves with a full tummy and extra green in their wallets. It doesn’t get any better than that!

Thanks to Judy Brannan and her team for all the hard work. By the time you read this, I expect cookbooks will be back in stock, so if you did not get one, now is the time. After a great Pot Luck in January,
the first we have had in many years, the February Super Bowl Party followed, then Soup Night, some Cooking Classes, and Healthy Eating. In March, we look forward to a Casserole night on the 8th and a Ladies Afternoon Tea on the 29th. On April 28th, we will have one of our biggest and most popular events, the Fish Fry! All the fish comes from Lake Lanier and is caught by our very own residents under the guidance of Tom Brown. March and April will also include Cooking Classes and Healthy Eating. May will feature our famous Kentucky Derby party which will be held outside on the lawn this year. As spring and summer continue, we look forward to a Luau, Salad Night, Mystery Dinner, Poker Run BBQ, and, of course the very popular Oktoberfest. So, if you are not a member, it is easy to join. Drop a check made out to the Cooking Club for $5.00 PER PERSON in our mailbox located in the back-right side of the lobby. Please put membership in the memo line.

Renewed
Hope is often the small thread a family clings to when going through a crisis. Eagle Ranch provides the space, time and support needed for children to work through their struggles. With each day, hope grows into healing, which leads the way home.

Cresswind Dinner Group By: Karen Silverthorn
What a year of fun, laughs, and enjoying great meals with Cresswind neighbors! Dinner Group members started the fall with an Oktoberfest themed dinner. In November, Mid-West recipes were featured. February ‘s theme was the ‘Roaring 20’s’ with special cocktails and a delicious meal from the Gatsby era. The final dinner for the season revolved around a ‘White’ menu. In March, participants enjoyed another wonderful meal at individual host homes. Then for dessert, everyone gathered at the clubhouse for a ‘Wrap-up’ party to celebrate the end of our 6th year as a dinner group in Cresswind. The Dinner Group meets 4 times per year - the first Saturday of October, November, February and March. Our mission is simple - to enjoy delicious meals while meeting new neighbors around an elegant dinner table. There are 4 couples/pairs of people assigned to a host home. At each dinner, residents are rotated so members will always meet new neighbors and get to know them as friends. All recipes are provided and dinner participants are assigned a portion of the meal to prepare. Food and beverage costs (average $40 - $65 per pair/couple) are shared equally among participants at each house. Anyone can join at any time during the year. If you are interested in joining the Dinner Group, email the coordinator, Karen Silverthorn, silk3349@charter.net to be added to the email list. There are no fees for Dinner Group, but you must be a paid member of the Cooking Club. Guidelines for the Dinner Group are posted on the Cooking Club website. Every meal is an adventure!

Dance Club
By: Eleanor Whalen
The Dance Club held its first Line Dance event on January 29th. Over 80 line dancers came to the Ballroom to socialize, dance and attend a short business meeting. The thirteen dances that were chosen for the evening were led by Eleanor Whalen, Lisa Phifer or Wendy O’Hanlon. The dance floor as well as the carpeted area was packed all evening with “boot scootin” dancers! The tables were decorated with various types of dance shoes, music CD’s and vintage sheet music, thanks to the imagination of Lynn Meek. This event was such a success, we feel that it needs to become a regular part of the Dance Club. Residents that are interested in learning more about Dance Club and its sessions may find all that information in our binder in The Club Lobby area. All of our sessions are free and open to all residents.

“
We asked the Fockele Garden Company for a landscape design that would build on the planting that we had already done and be drought tolerant, deer resistant, and low maintenance. They came up with a plan that met all of those criteria and the installation team expertly executed the plan. The Fockele maintenance service can be relied upon to do what needs to be done to keep things looking well-tended so when we go out in the yard we can just relax and enjoy ourselves.

Community Gardens by Sue DeCrescenzo
The Cresswind Community Gardens – Come Grow with Us! Spring is almost here and The Cresswind Community Gardens are getting spruced up! Stop by and see all the work done by the Farmstand volunteers. Walk the new crushed stone and brick path from the parking area through the gate, check out the garden boxes for early crops and thanks to Dave Rusk, maybe see a bluebird nest in the new handmade bird houses. Under the direction of the Farmstand Club and their hard-working garden managers, Evelyne Palmer, Mitch Schueler and Natalie Watts, plans are underway to relocate the storage shed. The intent is to make room for more garden boxes and a seating area for everyone to come and enjoy the gardens. There are exciting ideas in the works for events in the garden; for example, live music, and much, much more. Stay tuned for details in the Daily Updates. If you are interested in joining the fun, contact the Farmstand Community Garden Managers about garden boxes, volunteering and upcoming events. Come Grow with Us!

Pickleball Club by Al Pileggi Pickleball got off to an early start with several players on the court January 1st playing in blustery conditions during a light snow. Even in winter weather play goes on, with the exception of wet courts which are too slippery to play on. The first tournament of the year, organized by Amy Pike, was held in January. The Polar Express Hot Chocolate Tournament was held on a beautiful sunny day made to order for play. There were three divisions composed of novice, intermediate, and advanced players grouped into mixed doubles teams. The following teams were awarded tournament medals:
Pickleball Officers: Bobbi Strauss, Mascot; Al Pileggi, President; Amy Pike, Vice President; Virginia Chapman, Member at Large; Kim Miller, Member at Large; Jan Cieply, Secretary; Chuck Treloar, Treasurer;
NOVICE Gold medals to Vickie Johnson and Jesse Knowles Silver medals to Sheran Connolly and Cathy Kologinczak INTERMEDIATE Gold medals to Dave Johnson Pat Fagan Silver medals to Bambi Futch and Stanley Kopkin ADVANCED Gold medals to Wendy O’Hanlon and Chuck Treloar Silver medals to Brenda Young and Natt Davis The next tournament, an annual event named after club member Clay Myers, is scheduled for March 31st. When last contacted, Clay was alive and well and wanted everyone to know this is not a memorial event. League play is scheduled to begin in March and league schedules will be different than last year; so watch for announcements and sign up information. The plan is to have more leagues for a shorter duration with varying skill levels including men’s, ladies and mixed double competitions. If you have not paid your club dues of $10 per player, payment is requested by March 31st, 2018. Remember, you must be a dues paid member to participate in Pickleball Club tournaments, leagues, or social events. If you are new to Pickleball, watch for times for novice training sessions. The great thing about Pickleball here at Cresswind is all the wonderful people you meet and get to know, so come on out and “Pickle On”.

Quilting Group By: Evelyne Palmer
The Quilters Group started 2018 with a project everyone who has a kitchen can use! “Not your mama’s apron” was a lot of fun and more projects are coming up. Look for some of these projects for sale at the Farmstand this year. The Group had lunch and a trip to a local Quilt Shop and got even more inspired. In March, a trip is planned to attend the Quilt Show at Bulloch Hall. We meet every Thursday, 1:00 to 4:00 pm in the Arts and Craft room with all levels of quilters welcome from beginner to experienced. New prospective members are welcome as well. Stop by, meet us and see the work we do. Contact either Evelyne Palmer, hybiscus5@outlook. com or Bonnie May at Quilt.lady2@charter.net. The Group is available to offer assistance to our fellow residents if you have any quilting projects you started and now have the time to finish.

Cresswind Neighborhood Theatre Group By: Wayne Blum The Cresswind Neighborhood Theatre Group has hit the floor running! Auditions were held on January 4th for the upcoming play “Mama Won’t Fly.” Approximately 19 actresses and actors were selected for the various roles. The play is a comedy about a mother, daughter and bride-to-be who opt to make a cross-country car trip from Alabama to California to attend the wedding of the son/brother/husband-to-be. Along the way, the trio encounters humorous situations, involving several characters and relatives, that will guarantee to leave you laughing. The play is directed by Cresswind’s own Bert Emma who has directed several plays here in our community. In fact, this is Bert’s second time directing this particular play. He directed this play for Deaton Creek last year. So, he should have it perfected! I’m just saying… These past and future productions are not possible without the combined efforts of actors, costume designers, set decorators, chorus, dancers, house management, and many other volunteers. In fact, it took well over 100 volunteers for our last play, “Witness for The Prosecution.” If you are new to the neighborhood or have been around for some time and want to get involved with the theater, please contact Wayne Blum at theblums@charter.net. No experience is necessary. If you don’t want to try acting, there is plenty to do “behind the scenes.” This year, 2018, promises to be another successful year for the Cresswind Neighborhood Theatre.

Cresswind LL Veterans Inc by Roy Gogel
The 501(c)(3) charity’s motto is Touching One Life at a Time. The Veteran who is our UNG scholarship recipient attended January’s club meeting to thank Cresswind for helping him realize his dream to attend college. He will return to the military after graduation, but this time as an officer. A 64 year-old whose social security covers little beyond rent received both funds and various information assisting him to understand various government programs. Two unrelated individuals were victims of separate house fires. These individuals were provided with shirts, trousers, underwear, coats, and food. One was given a bicycle. The other, funds to assist with the down payment on an apartment. Clothes donated from a deceased Cresswind resident were collected and shared with a Veteran organization, the State unemployment office, and an appropriate Hall County office for their distribution to Veterans and other needy individuals in the Community.
CRESSWIND RESIDENT, Madeline Wirt, would like to introduce to you her law partners, John Gram and Cara Mitchell, who specialize in Estate Planning. MICRODERM INFUSION
By: Arnie Miesch
Open to all members, the Support Club for Veterans’ 2018 officers are: President – Arnie Miesch, Vice President – Ernie Seymour, Secretary – Pat Criste, Treasurer – Kim Koenig, Member at Large – Mary Joan Gogel.
At January’s meeting, a female Veteran with her two young daughters thanked Cresswind in a moving way for assisting her with furniture, etc. this past year. In addition to Club members who volunteered their time to pickup and deliver the items, many of the neighborhood’s fifteen households - mostly non-Club members - who contributed items also attended to meet her. One family gave a coffee table, another a mattress which coincidentally matched a donated bed frame’s size and also donated blanket and sheets - all from different homes. Another donated a love seat, one a dinette set, another a recliner; but it all came d deliverytogether in wonderfully, in line with our motto, Touching One Life at a Time. Charity, giving.
