Community Corner From the

Architectural Review Committee (ARC)… By: John Stevens The Mission and Purpose of the Architectural Review Committee (ARC) is to preserve and enhance the aesthetic qualities of our community for the collective enjoyment of all current and future homeowners while protecting and growing the value of our homes. Did you know… That all RADON MITIGATION INSTALLATIONS require prior review and approval of the ARC (Learn more: ARC Rules and Guidelines). Mitigation solutions must either be placed within the confines of the home with an appropriately-sized discharge vent through the roof or installed externally on the rear of the house out of sight from the street. That DRIVEWAY STAINING is now allowed with prior review and approval of the ARC (Learn more: ARC Rules and Guidelines). Kolter, however, has restricted Cresswind LL homeowners to only ONE color choice and has approved only ONE service contractor to do the work. (Learn more: ARC Rules and Guidelines). That PRIVACY BARRIERS are allowed with prior review and approval of the ARC (Learn more: ARC Rules and Guidelines). They must be made of dense hardwood in a design style consistent with Cresswind LL architecture and protected from weathering using either natural or earth-tone colored stain that compliments the colors of the house. Learn more about how to personalize and enhance your outside living space by visiting www.cresswindll.com and clicking on ‘Committees’.

Landscape Committee By: Meg Bohn

Do you have this plant in your yard?? Did you transplant it from your previous residence?? It has a heavenly name but is not good for our wildlife or our native landscapes. It is called Nandina domestica, sacred bamboo, or heavenly bamboo. Members of the Georgia Ornithological Society and other nature groups have been spreading the word about this popular, yet dangerous landscape plant. Scientists have discovered that the berries are toxic to Bluebirds, Cedar Waxwings, Robins, and other birds. All parts of this plant are poisonous and though not toxic to humans, are considered toxic to cats and other animals. Consider replacing any Nandina such as this one that produces many berries in your yard with hollies, wax myrtles or other dwarf Nandinas that produce no or few berries. These berries have also landed this plant on the Georgia State Invasive plant list for spreading into our natural replacing our native plants which is why it is deliveryareas in onandCresswind’s also Do Not Plant List.

Happy 6th Anniversary Cresswind Clubhouse: Reflections of the Public Opening of our Clubhouse Six Years Ago This June (Article first printed in Issue VI of the 2012 newsletter) “Ahs” and “Wows” were the comments of the day at the long awaited Cresswind Clubhouse Grand Opening which took place on Saturday, June 16, 2012. It was an enormous success! The weather was perfect for the 10:00 am ribbon cutting with Gainesville Mayor Danny Dunagan and Mayor Pro-Tem George Wangemann. It was estimated there were over 1000 attendees for the function! Guests were entertained by the Johns Creek Symphony Orchestra performing behind the Club while enjoying a complimentary lunch and drinks. Many took advantage of our outdoor amenities by treating themselves to a game of bocce ball, pickleball, horseshoes, or just relaxing poolside while enjoying the music and the beautiful view of Lake Lanier. Inside the clubhouse, residents and visitors were fortunate to have several activities taking place. Walter Reeves, the Georgia

Fine Furniture & Interior Design

Gardener, spoke to a standing room only crowd followed by a live demonstration. Gainesville’s own Quinlan Arts Center provided a lovely display of pottery, mosaic tile art, and hand-built clay pieces in our Arts and Crafts Room. Chef Andrew Brackner from Talk of the Town Catering delighted us with his cooking demonstrations in our Demonstration Kitchen. The Library was brought to life with the support of local authors and artisans. One visitor from Flowery Branch commented that the Grand Opening was “truly a first-class event at a first-class facility.” Throughout the day, several drawings for $100 gift cards, tickets to the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, MTScapes gift cards, and other fabulous prizes took place. Many thanks to all of the volunteer residents and staff who helped make our grand opening such a resounding success!

Who Makes Cresswind Go ‘Round’?

...keep reading if you have not already guessed - Meet the ladies of the Front Desk! Carolyn O’Camb, the Guest Relations Manager, was raised here in Gainesville and born in nearby Commerce, GA. Before coming to Cresswind, Carolyn’s career most recently included receptionist at Land O’Lakes Purina Feed and previously a position as Senior rater with the Liberty Mutual Group. We are just so happy she found her way here to Cresswind. Many of us rely heavily on Carolyn’s kindness, expertise, and knowledge of Cresswind to make our lives so much easier. If she does not know an answer to a problem or question, Carolyn will spend her personal time finding an answer. Carolyn’s immediate family consists of her husband, a car hauler, and their son, a service advisor for a trucking company. For her, family comes first and these two definitely rate #1 with Carolyn and mean the world to her. Carolyn has been here for 3 ½ years and has become an invaluable staff member. Kitti(Catherine)Kleinedler came to us from Flushing, Michigan – a small suburb of Flint. She has three children, twin daughters in Michigan and a son here in Georgia. Since her children are 13 months apart, Kitti learned quickly how to multitask and stay on her toes. Kitti enjoys her three grandchildren – ages 13, 11, and 8. Before Cresswind, Kitti was a teacher/counselor in Flushing schools for 37 years. Kitti taught English in grades 5 to 12 and finished her last eight years as a high school counselor. She truly loved her time as an educator! Kitti has been with us for 1 ½ years and she honesty could not think of a better place to work and spend her time. We hope she continues to feel this way. Kitti has learned how to manage so many issues here and make us all happy!

Meet Debbie Anderson, our newest Guest Relations Assistant. Having a military father, Debbie experienced life in many states but grew up mainly in Maryland. Her sister, Heidi, is a resident of Cresswind and Debbie happily resides in Oakwood with her cat Bentley. Some day she may be persuaded to move here with us! Debbie’s professional career involved time with IBM, MCI, and Tenant Healthcare. She is also a licensed Real Estate broker in Florida and Georgia. Currently, Debbie is active in the community through the Gainesville Newcomers Club, Lanier Women’s Club and her volunteer work at North East Georgia Medical Center. Debbie says she loves working here with all the great people and we are so lucky to have Debbie who has so quickly become an invaluable part of the staff!

Cresswind Fishing Club News

By: Toby Kelley Why are fish smart? Because they are in school. How do Cresswind fishermen learn to outsmart them? They go to the Cresswind Fishing School! Forty-four fishermen recently gathered to learn all about rods, reels, line, lures, and techniques from professor Ken Sturdivant. We also learned about the fishery on Lake Lanier from DNR expert Chris Looney. Armed with this new knowledge, we are ready to do battle with the big fish on Lanier. Men’s Softball…New Club at Cresswind By: John Stevens

There’s a new club in town…Men’s Softball…! After three years of ‘testing the interest’ here at Cresswind LL under the watchful eye and guidance of Keith Guernsey, a slow-pitch men’s softball club is now a real thing. On March 22nd, an organizational planning social/ cookout was held. Fifteen guys and several wives gathered to help shape and direct the emergence of this new teamcentered activity. An additional five guys had been unable to attend this meeting but have since ‘joined the team’. But we are still looking for more Cresswind guys to play. Lanier Point Park (a 10-12 minute-drive from Cresswind) has softball fields available for our use. Practices are happening. We are looking to set a regular practice day and time (Wednesday or Thursday) depending on the availability of the most players. Meanwhile, check the Cresswind Daily Update for the practice day and time for the upcoming week. Team managers John Stevens, Al Kooistra, Gene Bramblett, Jim Hart, and Keith Guernsey are planning

and directing practices with an eye toward keeping all of us injury-free, re-discovering our skill and confidence, practicing at field positions that suit each of us, building comradery and a sense of team as well as promoting and sustaining our late-life health in ways that are socially enriching and personally enjoyable. Opportunities to play with and against other teams from Dahlonega, Deaton Creek, and Rabun County are happening. Find more news and updates regarding the Cresswind Men’s Softball Club (MSC) by getting on our emailing list and by reading the Cresswind Daily Update… or contact John Stevens directly at: jstevens@ consultks.com.

Cresswind Bowling League

Cresswind Bridge News

By: Phil Vinyard

By: John Kelley

Our 2017 – 2018 bowling season is nearing completion with only two weeks of bowling remaining. While we hate to see this season end, we celebrate the ending in a great way with a wonderful buffet of homemade delights prepared by the bowlers and/or their spouses. Of course, the spouses are also invited to attend which makes this fun occasion that much better. After eating and having conversation, it is time to divide the prize money among the bowlers with some special payouts for individual or team accomplishments such as high game with or without handicap, high series with or without handicap and also for men and women bowlers and so on. With over $8000 to divide up and 20 teams, everyone will walk away from the banquet with some extra pocket money.

Who care if the weather is cold when the cards are hot? Cresswind bridge players have been burning up the tables with 19 opportunities a month to play bridge. Join us for a place at the table- whether you want to play rubber bridge, Chicago bridge, duplicate bridge, casual bridge or want to attend our Tuesday morning “bridge book club” where we “read” computer generated bridge hands. Details of times are available in the Bridge folder in the lobby of the club house. We hope to see you at the table soon.

We have made the decision to return next year to Stars and Strikes in Buford. This decision was made easier when the alley agreed to allow our league fees to be incorporated into their bank account system eliminating the need for the Cresswind Bowling League to incorporate or change our name. This and the fact that they are only increasing our costs by .25 cents per bowler per week made the decision a “no brainer”. We look forward to our fall season starting in September and hope that we will be adding to our teams with new residents or those who are wanting to start bowling again and hearing those familiar words, “I haven’t bowled for 35 years.” Look for our organizational meeting in August.

Cooking Club

By: Paula King

The Cooking Club continued with an active, busy schedule including, Soup Night and a Casserole Night plus Wine Pairing Class, and small Group Dinner. April 28th saw one of our largest and most anticipated events The Fish Fry, with all the fish coming out of our own Lake Lanier and caught by neighbors that live here in Cresswind. What a great time! In anticipation of another major event, the Kentucky Derby party, we had a hat decorating class so ladies could prepare and decorate their hats for the occasion. Grill & Ale brings the excitement and fun of the Kentucky Derby on May 5th with all the Southern charm one would expect. Leading this popular event is Rose Micuch rose@sweetasarose.com. May 24th will be our always popular Ladies Afternoon Tea with all the fine china and fancy appetizers. This is a great time to put on your finest and strut your stuff. Interested? Contact Hal Flomerfelt thehflom@aol.com. Looking forward to summer, the Club will be having a class on how to make salad in a jar. Not to be confused with a Fun with Food Salad Night which is scheduled for June 22nd.

Cresswind Investment Club By: Janet Nelson

Cresswind Investment Club’s motto is “Knowledge, Fun, & Profit,” which we achieved in 2017. The club conducts monthly meetings the first business Monday of each month at 2:45 pm in the Crow’s Nest, discussing possible stock investments and personal strategies, as well as two socials a year and organized community presentations to understand our economy and possible investment programs. In addition, Debbie Coursey-Prah has given special classes on charting outside the regular meeting for those interested in technical analysis. We invite you to attend a meeting as a guest to visit with us and see what we are about. Please contact Peter Bertasi, nascar. nut1@yahoo.com or Janet Nelson, jnotesto87@gmail.com if you have interest or questions.

Mark your calendar for a first at Cresswind scheduled for August 11th - a Mystery Dinner with all the clues and fun. As fall comes around, so does the Poker run and the Big Oktoberfest, Soup Nights, and Cooking Classes. All our events are published through our website and mailing lists. Our events are open to Cooking Club members only but it is so easy to join. Make a check out to Cooking Club for $5.00 per person. WRITE membership in the memo line and drop it in our mailbox in the clubhouse lobby. Hope to see you at one or many of our parties and events.

Cresswind Dinner Group By: Karen Silverthorn

Dinner Group wrapped up its 6th season in March with a “White and Black” themed meal. Our members all say “it is the best way to get to know your Cresswind neighbors!” The Dinner Group meets four times per year. Mark your calendars now for October 6th, November 3rd, February 2nd, and March 2nd, 2019. Our mission is simple - to enjoy delicious meals while meeting new neighbors around an elegant dinner table. There are four couples/ pairs of people assigned to a host home. At each dinner, residents are rotated so members will always meet new neighbors and get to know them as friends. All recipes are provided and dinner participants are assigned a portion of the meal to prepare. Food and beverage costs (average $40 - $65 per pair/couple) are shared equally among participants at each house. Anyone can join at any time during the year. Guidelines for the group are on the Cooking Club’s website and posted in the Clubhouse. If you are interested in joining the Dinner Group, email the coordinator (Karen Silverthorn, silk3349@charter.net) to be added to the email list. Evite and email notifications will begin in September to members on the email list. Every meal is an adventure!

We strive to create “customers for life” and believe that each patient deserves the extra care and attention that we would want for our own family members.

Fun With Fashions By: Harriet Gershkowitz On Friday, February 23rd, our 2nd Ladies & Men’s Fashion Show was held. After dinner, we were wowed by the fabulous models who modeled beautiful fashions from Dillard’s at the Mall of Georgia. One of Cresswind’s master gardeners, Sarah Galshack, presented an informative fun afternoon of container gardening in March. Watch your mail for all future happenings with the Fun With Fashions Club. For information about the club, contact Harriet Gershkowitz at hgersh03@gmail.com.

We asked the Fockele Garden Company for a landscape design that would build on the planting that we had already done and be drought tolerant, deer resistant, and low maintenance. They came up with a plan that met all of those criteria and the installation team expertly executed the plan. The Fockele maintenance service can be relied upon to do what needs to be done to keep things looking well-tended so when we go out in the yard we can just relax and enjoy ourselves.

Genealogy Club

By: Dave Dittmeier

The Genealogy Club continues to unpack resources for genealogical research. A recent meeting included a presentation by a Cresswind resident Theron Rogers on the website Find-A-Grave. Theron has photographed 670 cemeteries in Georgia, New York, Pennsylvania and North Carolina, consisting of 45,000 memorials and over 167,000 photos. The Club also held its annual “Taste of Genealogy” where members brought a dish to share of their ethnic origin. The Genealogy Club is open to all residents regardless of the level of expertise. Our only goal is to assist each other in our research through the sharing of resources.

You might be a genealogist if ... you feel inclined to share your family tree with everyone.

Quilting Group

Only 5 miles from Cresswind in beautiful downtown Oakwood By: Evelyne Palmer

The Quilters Group started making lap quilts for Seniors in 2017 which are distributed through Legacy Link. At the end of 2017, we had made and delivered 47 quilts. Proudly, we have already donated 11 more quilts, bringing our total to 58 so far in 2018. This is made possible through monies from our Donation Quilt at the Holiday Market, donated fabric from residents and the generosity of both materials, talent, and time from the Group. We will continue working with Legacy Link to provide lap quilts for Seniors in Need and work with Quilts for Kids, along with personal projects and our Holiday Market Donation Quilt. March 15th members of the Group attended Bulloch Hall’s 36th Annual Great American Cover-Up Quilt Show in Roswell. It was a unique opportunity to see a special exhibit of quilted art which represents the 59 designated National Parks in the United States. Each Park was represented by three originally designed quilted illustrations, landscape, and pieces featuring flora and fauna unique to the respective park. We meet every Thursday, 1:00 to 4:00 pm in the Arts and Craft room. We have all levels of quilters, from beginner to experienced! New prospective members are welcome. Stop by, meet us and see the work we do. Contact either Evelyne Palmer, hybiscus5@outlook.com or Bonnie May at Quilt.lady2@charter.net The Group is available to offer assistance to our fellow residents if you have any quilting projects you started and now have the time to finish.

What’s Happening

From the Cresswind Kayak Club By: John Stevens Nearly 100 Cresswinders attended the 2018 Cresswind Kayak Club (CKC) ‘Kick-Off ’ Social on the Pavilion Patio on Sunday, March 18th. This was the largest turnout yet for this 3rd annual season opening non-paddling Kayak Club event. Open to ALL Cresswinders regardless of interest in kayaking, this meet-and-mingle event provides an easy way for Cresswind newcomers to start getting connected. Our Special Guest Presenter this year was Ava Lewis, Cresswind neighbor and resident physical fitness instructor/trainer, who shared tips for properly stretching and strengthening the relevant core muscle groups for safe kayaking. Since muscle fatigue and strain are among the things that can put our kayakers at risk on the water, she encouraged all beginner and novice kayakers to visit her in the gym for more tips and instruction before getting on the water. As in previous years, our resident Auxiliary Coast Guard representative, Chuck Kelemen, again highlighted several regulations that kayakers should be aware of for safe kayaking on Lake Lanier, to include the requirement that all kayaks need to display an orangecolored Identification Sticker. These ID Stickers are available at the front desk and/or by contacting the CKC at cresswind.kayak.club@gmail.com. FYI: Saturday morning group paddles have started. Just show up and be on the water ready to paddle by 9:30. Group input decides the length and duration of the adventure. Contact us at cresswind.kayak.club@gmail. com for more info.

A Brick Fundraiser began on March 31st and will be held through July 4th. Each brick costs $100 and is the perfect way to memorialize an occasion, remember a loved one, or make a statement as a legacy. All Cresswind residents are welcome to participate. The goal is to sell 100 bricks. The Funds raised will be used to purchase 2 ten foot-long, covered double seating benches to be placed between Courts 4/5 and 5/6. If you are interested in purchasing a brick, please contact Pat Fagan @ patfagan@charter.net.

Big Sounds from Small Bands at Cresswind By: John Kelley No matter how you like your music - there is a Cresswind Small Band for you. The Shades of Midnight play hot rock and roll, the Jazz band plays it cool, the SurfAces play it wet and wild. The Bluegrass band keeps it real and the Ukulele band just wants to have fun. Hopefully we will have other “showcase and jam” evenings featuring all five small bands like the first event last month for you to enjoy!. Listen for a band near youor better yet pick up an instrument and make some music with your Cresswind neighbors.

Tennis By: Sandy Barmak

Sports and Games Club By: Pete Lyons

On a chilly windy morning in March, sixteen ladies went to Deaton Creek for a fun social morning of tennis. The Deaton Creek tennis players outdid themselves providing a lavish lunch following play. We look forward to hosting them in the future.

It is that time of the year. Get out and DO! Lots of Sports and Games to try out and to be a part of such as Bocce Ball, Basketball, Mini Golf, Cornhole, Horseshoes, and Shuffle Board. Watch for announcements about times and locations. Plus, do not forget about our next Bingo Night ... Summer Bingo on June 12th. Once Tickets go on sale, they go fast.

Our ladies’ and men’s teams are actively engaged in competition this spring which will continue through May. The ladies league options are growing and they are now playing in three USTA 3.0 leagues: 40 +, 55+, and 65+. Last year they only participated in the 55+ 3.0. The men are also participating in 3 leagues: the Cresswind Experience Alta, Alta Men’s senior league, and Silver Ball local community league. Everyone appreciates the cheering squad during our home matches. Thanks to Bill Papciak and his team of instructors (Bill Bigard, Gordon Watts, and Jim Snell), many of us improved our skills and learned some strategy. It was good to see new players come out and join the fun. Come join us on the courts. It is a great season for tennis. For more information contact our president, Debbie Cortjens at Debbie. cortjens@gmail.com

Here are some news flashes from some gamers: Corn hole night continues to be held on the 3rd Tuesday of each month through May in the ballroom. We plan on moving outdoors for the summer months, weather permitting. Join us for Basketball shooting games and fun, every Thursday at 9am on the basketball court, of course, between pickleball courts 7A and B. Watch for other times in the Daily Updates as well as updates on Bocce Ball and Miniature Golf. Look forward to seeing you playing around!

Veterans Support Club

Cresswind LL Veterans Inc

Graduation is always a special time. Cresswind has participated in several graduations recently in the Superior Court for veterans who completed an extensive program that spans in excess of two years. Cresswind residents mentor these men and women and, for the individual, he/she is repatriated, is a tax paying citizen with a roof over their heads for which they pay, and typically the charges against them are removed. Attached are two photographs of our recent three graduations. This is a very good alternative to the proverbial jail system and Cresswind has become instrumental in the local Superior Court system, making a positive impact.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS! Monte Carlo Casino Night is coming to Cresswind on Saturday, September 8th! This fund raiser for the 501(c)(3) charity will be fun for all. Funds are continuing to be disbursed to individuals that are vetted and forwarded to us via various channels - Veterans Administration social workers and chaplains, state Veteran Service Officers, state unemployment counselors, county officials, and local clergy in consonance with the charity’s motto, “Touching One Life at a Time.”

By: Roy Gogel

By: Arnie Miesch

The casino night will have various games for your enjoyment to include craps, blackjack, roulette, Texas hold ‘em poker, 3 card poker, and a money wheel. Play will be with play money. Everyone attending will receive a ticket to enter to win a prize. Details are at www.cresswindveterans.org and will be in the Daily Update.

Please remember that tattered United States flags should be properly disposed. If yours needs to be retired, turn it in to the Front Desk and the flag will be given to the veterans for proper disposal.

Neighborhood Theatre By: Wayne Blum

Cresswind RV Club By: Dave Dittmeier

We are getting close! The cast for “Mama Won’t Fly” has pretty much settled into rehearsals and have been hard at work memorizing their lines. I attended a rehearsal recently and was impressed! This is a production not to be missed! For those that are receiving their first Waterfall, the play is a comedy about a mother, daughter, and bride-to-be who opt to make a cross-country car trip from Alabama to California to attend the wedding of the son/brother/husband-to-be. Along the way, the trio encounters humorous situations involving several characters and relatives that will guarantee to leave you laughing.

The RV group was recently approved for club status. Currently consisting of over 50 members with a variety of Recreational Vehicles, the RV Club focuses on the outdoors. Planned excursions include a week at Lake Toxaway, NC and a trip to Sarasota, FL. This is in addition to the numerous trips taken by individuals. The RV club is open to all residents who own or may be interested in owning a recreational vehicle. For more information contact Brian Chapin brianchapin@ charter.net or Dave Dittmeier DaDittmeier@gmail.com .

Performance dates are from May 17th through the 20th. May 17-19 begin at 7:30 pm. The performance on May 20th begins at 3:00 pm. These past and future productions are not possible without the combined efforts of actors, costume designers, set decorators, chorus, dancers, house management, and many other volunteers. If you are new to the neighborhood or have been around for some time and want to get involved with the theater, please contact Wayne Blum at theblums@charter.net. No experience is necessary. If you do not want to try acting, there is plenty to do “behind the scenes”. This year, 2018, promises to be another successful year for the Cresswind Neighborhood Theatre.
