From the desk of Gary Hulion Well, we thought spring would never get here with the longer than average cooler temperatures and spring has almost sprung straight into summer. As more and more residents are enjoying the outdoors by walking, biking, or on their golf carts, I remind you to please obey the posted speed limit of 25 MPH when navigating the community. This not only applies to automobiles but to our bicycle racing enthusiast and golf carts. We hear daily complaints from residents who say they had a near miss with a bicyclist in the community that exceeded the normal safe speed limit and other regulations such as going backwards in the roundabout and not observing stop signs. It is up to each of us as residents and staff to adhere to the rules of the road and pay extra attention to others around us. The phone call I never want to get is that a resident or staff member has been run over or hurt by someone not following the rules. Also as a reminder, when we have large outdoor or indoor events, please consider carpooling or bringing your golf cart as it aids us in not having to walk so far to the clubhouse. Third Quarter dues will be due July 1st and considered late on the 15th. These quarterly dues are the only revenue stream

we have in order to pay for the cost of operating the Association. The Budget is based on quarterly premiums and are much needed on time. While the option to pay monthly is there, a late penalty associated with paying less than the quarterly amount is assessed for each month the full amount has not been received. The Board has agreed to allow a onetime waiver of late fees and penalties per year.

Gary Hulion

Last but not least, please be an informed owner and attend the many events where the Board is addressing issues which affect the community such as monthly Board Meetings, quarterly Committee Meetings, quarterly Club Meetings, and the Town Hall Meetings. Before you pass along information to your neighbors, make sure you have the correct information. Read the Daily update, ask a staff member or Board member, but please do not spread information that is incorrect. Have a safe and enjoyable summer.

Committee Corner From the

Architectural Review Committee (ARC)… By: John Stevens The Mission and Purpose of the Architectural Review Committee (ARC) is to preserve and enhance the aesthetic qualities of our community for the collective enjoyment of all current and future homeowners while protecting and growing the value of our homes. Did you know… That NO ARTIFICIAL flowers or plants are permitted to be displayed on the exterior of a home or in any shrub bed or property area; That flower pots, statuaries, yard art, fountains, and other types of PROPERTY DECORATIONS may be displayed with prior review and approval of the ARC (Learn more: ARC Rules and Guidelines). The number and type of property decorations may be subject to restriction if judged to be excessive and/or unbecoming to the overall aesthetics of Cresswind LL; That PRIVACY BARRIERS are allowed with prior review and approval of the ARC (Learn more: ARC Rules and Guidelines). They must be made of dense hardwood in a design style consistent with Cresswind LL architecture and protected from weathering using either natural or earth-tone colored stain that compliments the colors of the house. Learn more about how to personalize and enhance your outside living space by visiting www.cresswindll.com and clicking on ‘Committees’.

Rules & Regulations Committee Update

By: Fred Irwin In April 2018, the Cresswind Board of Directors reinstated the Rules and Regulations Committee as a standing committee approving two former members: Sue Garcia and Fred Irvin as the new Vice Chair and Chair, respectively. Solicitations were made for new members with fifteen responses and seven interviewed. As is common here in Cresswind, the talents and expertise of the candidates were outstanding. Three members were selected and approved by the Board: Linda Potter – former HOA President in Brookhaven, GA Lois Dillard – former Records Management Officer for the City of Dallas, Texas who volunteered to be the committee Secretary Ron Johnson – former staff attorney to the Georgia Court of Appeals and Supreme Court. He had chaired an Architecture Control Committee for ten years. All three are proficient in word processing and Lois has experience creating electronic forms. Three meetings were held in May where the team created a committee Mission Statement, developed a detailed process for revising rules, revised the formatting style, and implemented version control. Our plans are to complete a review of all current rules, establish rules on the website in an accessible format, archive older versions for reference purposes, enhance stakeholder involvement in rule making, communicate changes to the homeowners, solicit needed changes for clarity and consistency, remove unnecessary and obsolete rules, and draft new rules as required. Landscape Committee

By: Sarah Galshack Have you chosen the green, yellow, or red option for the level of care you wish for your yard? One of the biggest differences in the three options is in the pruning. If you have added landscaping above what was there when you closed on your house, and you have chosen the green option then you are taken care of and pruning all around your house will be done by MTScapes. If, however you chose yellow, then MTScapes will be pruning whatever is located in the front of the house (and down the street exposed side if you have a corner lot). This includes all of the shrubs and small trees. Just be careful if you have planted something special, for example a dwarf weeping Japanese Maple that really should not need pruning. You will have to watch that, and in addition, you will be responsible for pruning whatever you have planted down the sides and in the back of the house. Red is the signal for the workers to step back and not prune any part of your yard. You will need to maintain whatever landscaping is located in the front, sides, and back of your yard. Of course, you can hire a landscape care company to help you with that. It becomes very important when choosing trees and shrubs that at maturity will fill a space nicely without overstepping their bounds and create the need for extensive pruning. Reminder: Two mulches are approved for use in Cresswind: pine straw and mini pine bark nuggets. No colored, no hardwood, no large pine bark nuggets may be used.

Health and Fitness Committee By: Laurie Solomon

Did you know one third of older adults fall every year?! Falling does not have to be an inevitable part of aging. If you would like a FREE balance screen and are between the ages of 55-75, the Health and Fitness Committee will be having Jim Lewis, PT, DPT and physical therapy students from Brenau University coming to Cresswind. He is conducting a research study utilizing standard tests with the goals of lowering fall risks and improving balance. Dr. Lewis has also agreed to see people above the age of 75. If you learn you may be at risk, practical lifestyle adjustments as well as balance training can reduce falls substantially. I have taken part in the study and highly recommend your participation. The date for this important opportunity will be announced in the Daily Update. Mark your calendars for our Health Fair on August 18th, 2018. Our Fair last year was a huge success with many resident testimonials and positive feedback. Health vendors, screenings, health products and services, healthy cooking demonstrations will be here all under one roof! There will be a myriad of offerings for your well-being. Please come and join us. We hope you are taking advantage of the new equipment that has been added to the gym. Just a reminder that there is a suggestion box on the gym wall for any comments residents may have.

Welcome Committee News By: Denise Skeels

Our Cresswind Welcome Committee of six members has been hard at work contacting new residents. We held a Newcomers’ Orientation in the Ballroom on April 18th for those residents recently closing on houses. Approximately 40 residents attended the presentation by First Service Residential, several clubs, the Cresswind Board, and our HOA. They were also able to pick up information about Gainesville and surrounding Hall county. The next New Resident Orientation will be held in August. If you do not hear from a Welcome Committee Member within four weeks of closing, please contact me at skeelsdenise@ gmail.com. Welcome to Cresswind!

Nature Trails Update

Cresswind Great Decisions Group

By: Bill Dickey, Trailblazer Group

If you have walked the trails lately, you may have noticed the “fried eggs” on some of the trees on Robin and Swallow trails. There are times, especially in the fall, when the trails are hard to locate. The “fried egg” symbol is the way a couple of the trickier trails are being marked to keep you on the path. (In the past, a few hikers had to improvise a new path to get out.) This is the time of the year when you need to be aware of the “critters” found in the natural areas. Deer, squirrels, raccoons, frogs, and snakes make their home there, and coyotes come and go. Snakes are rarely seen- black (rat) snakes and common garter snakes are harmless to humans. However, poisonous copperheads have been seen in several areas in and out of the woods - just be aware. Stay on the trails and you should be OK. Do not bother them and they will not bother you. (For this reason, your dogs should be on a leash while on the trails for their safety.) There have been many trees downed by the strong winds we have experienced in the past months. If you see a tree, large branches, bridge damage or any other problems on the trails, notify the property manager and it will be taken care of as quickly as possible. There will be future meetings for those interested in joining our “Trailblazer” group. We will discuss maintenance and come up with new ideas to make our trails better. Watch the Daily Update for time and place. Enjoy your walk in the woods- it is good medicine for your soul!

By: Carol Hanlon

The Cresswind Great Decisions Discussion Group examines U.S. foreign policy on eight international topics using materials prepared by the Foreign Policy Association (www.fpa. org). Weekly meetings generally have 20-30 participants and the fall session will be on Monday evenings from 7-9 pm September 10th through October 29th.

Education Committee By: Doug Geganto

We’ve reached the halfway point of 2018 and the Cresswind LL Education Committee has had a very successful and busy 6 months. Through June the committee presented 27 programs with 1063 residents attending our scheduled programs. Coming up in July and August we have the following programs scheduled: Advancements in Plastic Surgery with Dr. Davoodi, Mimi’s Travel Tips presented by Mimi Szutz, Hip and Knee Replacement presented by Dr. DeCook from Northside Hospital, Active Shooter Safety presented by the Gainesville PD, Keeping your Skin Healthy with Dr. Misty Caudell, Discussion on Alzheimer’s presented by Don Burt. As always, we ask you to watch the Daily Update for details and times for our programs. The Education Committee has created its new website, Cresswind LL Education Committee, which now allows Cresswind residents to view our complete calendar for the year, get information on scheduled programs and to contact the committee with suggestions for programs. This year 56 percent of our programs were suggested and requested by Cresswind residents. Once we get a suggestion for a program, the committee discusses it and a committee member is assigned to research and try to locate a speaker. I’m proud to say that we have been able to get 100 percent of resident suggested

This summer be sure to visit The Farmstand Community Garden and enjoy the progress of our beautiful newly planted perennials, bushes, and herb beds! Notice Dave Rusk’s bluebird houses have little families in residence. While there, you will be amazed at the bounty already being harvested by the Cresswind gardeners. Crops and flowers grown keeping with organic principles produce a colorful array of cabbage, corn, tomatoes, beans, peppers, and so much more. Did you know one of our gardeners, Lance Haney plants to provide for the Monarch butterflies? These and other pollinators are critical to the health of the garden. See if you can find his garden box. Volunteers abound! This year’s vine keeper, George Maule, works tirelessly to keep the grapevines weeded and fed. Sarah Galshack’s expertise as a Master Gardener allow the perennials to shine. John Whalen waters those thirsty flower beds. As with any successful endeavor our much-appreciated administrative wiz Linda Bella keeps us all on track and orderly. The Farmstand has been blessed with a tremendous amount of talent enabling the Community Garden to become a beautiful respite for our community. So, come. Stroll through, talk with our gardeners about their boxes, the garden managers - Evelyne Palmer, Mitch Schueler and Natalie Watts about their daily challenges and joys in the garden. Most of all, The Farmstand invites you to visit and enjoy some time with us!

From the Cresswind Kayak Club By: John Stevens The mission of the CLL Kayak Club (CKC) continues to be to promote enduring friendships and social community for ALL Cresswind residents regardless of their skill or interest in kayaking. With help from CKC members, the CKC officers organize and plan both paddling and non-paddling social events. This year, membership in the CKC is approaching 180 Cresswinders, with people new to Cresswind joining all the time. Annual dues are just $5.00 and entitle you to join in with other nice people for shared fun, laughter, and/or kayak paddling adventures. Joining is easy…just drop a check for $5.00 made payable to the CLL Kayak Club in the CKC Drop Box located in the right rear corner of the Clubhouse Lobby and start getting our monthly email ‘blast’ with CKC news and updates about Club activities and events. Your CKC membership also entitles you to participate in our twice-yearly lottery for a 6-mos use of a vertical kayak storage slot down by the Cresswind Marina. Your $5.00 annual membership fee also makes you eligible to be on the ‘wait list’ for a longterm lease of a horizontal kayak storage rack located along the shoreline. But you DON’T NEED A KAYAK to be a member of the CLL Kayak Club. Check out the CKC website at: https://cresswindkayak. wixsite.com/cresswindkayak for information on how to be part of the CKC fun.

Cooking Club

By: Paula King

The Cooking Club had a busy spring with Mother Nature giving us beautiful weather for both the Fish Fry and the Kentucky Derby parties which were huge successes. We kicked the summer season off to a great start on June 30th with a better than ever Luau planned by Sheran Connolly. In July, we are in a mood for freshness with gardens and farmers’ markets coming to harvest. July 18th we will have a cooking class featuring Salad in a Jar taught by Jacquie Waldron. Then July 22nd, we will have our first ever Salad Night! This will be very much like soup night with Salads being made by many members so we will have a great variety of salads for everyone to try. Hosting will be Rose Micuch. August 11th will be our long-anticipated Murder Mystery Dinner. You don’t want to miss this! Heidi Anderson is working hard on planning this event that we have wanted to do for a long time. It should be a blast with many surprises. September 12th is a Red Wine and appetizer class taught by Lisa Giblin. Then September 15th brings our Poker Run and Beer Tasting, a very popular annual BBQ, hosted by Paula King and Eileen Langdon. Then as fall approaches we look forward to Oktoberfest, a Chili Night, and more. We have an urgent need for a member or members to lead the Healthy Eating events. You can pick your topics, your dates. You can lead one session or more. If we do not get someone to take over Healthy Eating, it will have to be dropped from the calendar. Please, someone interested in living a healthy lifestyle, step up! This is YOUR club. We hope every member will help work in at least one event a year. It is not only fun -but a great way to meet others in the community. IN BUSINESS FOR

Bible Study

By: Dave Dittmeier

The Bible Study Club continues on several fronts. The Women’s Bible Study is currently studying the book of Revelation. The Men completed a study of the book of Ephesians and are now studying the book of Colossians. Various Couples Bible Studies continue to meet in private homes in the community and an informational session was held for couples interested in forming additional groups. The Women’s, Men’s, and Couple’s Bible Studies are open to all residents who are interested in studying the Word of God and all welcome new participants. The Bible Study Club also continued its monthly non-denominational services with guest speakers from Lakewood Baptist Church and Westminster Presbyterian Church.

Cresswind Bowling League

Men’s Golf News

The end of league season banquet was a huge success thanks to the efforts of Karen Brown-Crider and her team of volunteers. We had great food, lots of fun and laughs, and over $8000 in prize money distributed to both individual and team winners.

Cresswind Men’s Golf Group is in full swing. We play both Tuesday and Thursday every week if it does not rain. Golfers of all ability levels are welcome. We had a hole in one in late May by Jerry Cox at Crystal Falls Golf Course. That makes four in five years. Way to go Jerry! If you want to join the fun, contact Rod Quisenberry to get on the list. Play as often or as few times as you want.

By: Phil Vinyard

The first place team known as the Spare Parts comprised of Micky Irvin, Hal Griffith, Elaine Rogers, and Dan Koletsos took home $550 in prize money following a bowl off with the second place team, Kingpins. Some of the individual winners were Jim Selbitschka for high average with a 186 for men and Helen Mack with a high average of 137 for women. Pat Christe and Judy Hoberg won cash for the most improved average. For those interested in bowling in our upcoming season, our organizational meeting will be held on Sunday, August 12th in the clubhouse ballroom. We will elect league officers, form teams, and also sign up substitutes. So put this date on your calendar. We will be bowling again at Stars and Strikes in Buford and the cost will be $10 per week to bowl on a team.

Cresswind Dinner Group

CRESSWIND LADIES GOLF CLUB By: Mary Ann Amick

The Ladies Golf Club is off and running! We began in May and will continue through October. This is our third year and we are now a group of 68 members. We welcomed 18 new players this season and have enjoyed playing and socializing with all of them. We will continue to have our member/ guest events at the Chattahoochee Golf Club. Contact Mary Ann Amick if you have any questions. ladiesgolf@mail.com You can check out our website on the Cresswind website under Ladies Golf club.

By: Karen Silverthorn Dinner Group takes a break for the summer, but kicks into full speed in the fall to begin its seventh season. Here is a sneak peek at the menu themes. October’s meal will highlight Italian cuisine, November features more traditional courses but with a twist. Thai dishes are planned for February and for the last dinner in March, St Patrick’s Day food will be celebrated. What a great way to spend an evening enjoying a delicious dinner with Cresswind neighbors! Members – mark your calendars now for the 2018-19 season! The Dinner Group meets four times per year - the first Saturday of October, November, February and March. Our mission is simple - to enjoy delicious meals while meeting new neighbors around an elegant dinner table. There are four couples/pairs of people assigned to a host home. At each dinner, residents are rotated so members will always meet new neighbors and get to know them as friends. All recipes are provided and dinner participants are assigned a portion of the meal to prepare. Food and beverage costs (average $40 - $65 per pair/couple) are shared equally among participants at each house. Anyone can join at any time during the year. If you are interested in joining the Dinner Group, email the coordinator, Karen Silverthorn at silk3349@charter.net) to be added to the email list. There are no fees for Dinner Group, but you must be a paid member of the Cooking Club. Guidelines for the Dinner Group are posted on the Cooking Club website. Every meal is an adventure!

Social Singles By: Elaine Vetter

Those who wandered into the clubhouse on the night of April 28th could hear a lot of laughter coming from the 3rd floor where the Cresswind Social Singles hosted Game Night. Four different games in four different rooms with 35 attendees made for lots of fun and a promise to add Game Night to the schedule on a regular basis. Upcoming events include a Scavenger Hunt, brunch at Talmo Grill, day trips to Simpson Auto Yard and Gibbs Gardens, hikes, bowling, lunch bunch, and our monthly social on the 2nd Sunday of the month. If you are single and looking for new things to do with other single residents, this is a great group to join. Contact Elaine Vetter at elvetter@hotmail.com for more information or to be added to the email list.

Quilting Group

By: Evelyne Palmer

The Quilting Club extends a heartfelt thank you to our residents who have graciously donated fabrics and others materials to our Club. In May, we received another donation of fabrics which our Club is already making into lap quilts that are distributed through Legacy Link, total so far 65! If the Club is unable to use any of the fabrics or materials included in the donations, we have found worthy groups/schools in our area that are grateful to receive the items. In May, we were made aware of the needs of the Art Department in Gainesville High School. They were delighted to receive the items we donated. We have also been able to help private animal rescues. On July 19th, the Quilting Club is planning a road trip to Blairsville to have lunch and shop at the Quilt Shop. In addition, an Art Quilt Exhibit is being held in Hayesville, NC, which is a short distance from Blairsville. We extend an invitation to any resident who might like to join us. This will be a carpool trip. If you are interested, please contact either Evelyne Palmer, hybiscus5@outlook.com or Bonnie May at Quilt. lady2@charter.net to make reservations. We meet every Thursday, 1:00 to 4:00 pm in the Arts & Crafts room. All levels of Quilters from beginner to experienced are encouraged to join in. New prospective members are welcome as well. Stop by, meet us, and see the work we do. Contact either Evelyne Palmer, hybiscus5@outlook.com or Bonnie May at Quilt.lady2@charter.net The Group is available to offer assistance to our fellow residents if you have any quilting projects you started and now have the time to finish.

Cresswind Small Band News By: John Kelley

Stop, Look, and Listen The live music you hear - jazz, rock, surf, bluegrass, or ukulele may be coming from one of our small bands. Looks like a folk/soft rock group is being formed this summer - welcome to the family. Several individual members of our small band club (singers and horn players) also lend their talents to community wide bands. We invite you to Stop, Look and Listen- and then join in the fun.

Tennis By: Sandy Barmak

Sports and Games Club By: Pete Lyons

Between the raindrops, the Tennis Club enjoyed a busy spring of competitive team tennis, round robin play, and clinics. Everyone is invited on July 14th to watch the Ladies Wimbledon final. A morning to watch great tennis, socialize, and enjoy strawberries and cream is planned.

Now that Summer is upon us, come out and try some new games. Learn how to play

The Ladies competitive teams have grown and are now participating in three USTA leagues, 40+, 55+, and 65+. We did not make the playoffs but we sure had fun playing. Congratulations to Captain Dan Skeels’ Silver Ball team that beat a strong Chateau Elan team in the playoffs to win the championship. The Senior Men and the Men’s Open ALTA teams had competitive seasons. They did not make the playoffs but feel motivated for the fall! We held several spring and summer clinics for players of all levels, coordinated by Bill Papciak, with Bill Bigard, Gordon Watts, Gene Evans, and Jim Snell also instructing. A Dual Clinic sponsored by the Tennis and Pickleball Clubs had tennis players learning pickleball and pickleball players learning or returning to tennis. The efforts of volunteer instructors from both clubs were appreciated. The social after proved that both Clubs know how to party! For information about tennis, contact president, Debbie.cortjens@gmail.com.

Bocce Ball or join the men on the Basketball court! Play Cornhole in the Ballroom or weather permitting, play outside. Join the crowd once a month for a round of Mini Golf, and don’t forget the Sports and Games sponsored Bingo Nights. Information about all the events appear in the Daily Updates so keep your eyes open for the announcements. Looking forward to seeing you!

Bocce Ball By Steve Remsen Bocce Ball is played on the courts behind the Clubhouse. It is free and all residents are invited to play. Bocce Ball is played on Thursday and the time depends on the time of the year because of the heat and the cold. We usually play four people to a court. We hope you will join us and see how much fun we have. If you have any questions, contact Steve Remsen.

All the World’s a Stage – and This is Certainly True of Cresswind! By: Wayne Blum

The verdict is in!” Mama Won’t Fly” was a huge success! Nearly 550 residents, families, and friends attended the play and the feedback has been nothing but positive. I would like to thank everyone who attended as well as the cast, production teams, and others who have volunteered their talents to make this event the success that it was. And let us not forget Bert Emma who introduced “Mama Won’t Fly” to our community and then spent the last five months directing it! Thanks Bert! But we are not done… The next play will be directed by our own Scott Larson and is a comedy by Noel Coward entitled “Present Laughter.” The plot follows a few days in the life of the successful and self-obsessed light comedy actor Garry Essendine as he prepares to travel for a touring commitment in Africa. Amid a series of events bordering on farce, Garry has to deal with women who want to seduce him, placate both his long-suffering secretary and his estranged wife, cope with a crazed young playwright, and overcome his impending midlife crisis (since he has recently turned forty). The story was described by Coward as “a series of semi-autobiographical pyrotechnics”. These past and future productions are not possible without the combined efforts of actors, costume designers, set decorators, chorus, dancers, house management, and many other volunteers. If you are new to the neighborhood or have been around for some time and want to get involved with the theater, please contact Wayne Blum at theblums@charter.net. No experience is necessary. If you do not want to try acting, there is plenty to do “behind the scenes”. This year, 2018, promises to be another successful year for the Cresswind Neighborhood Theatre.

Arts & Crafts Club

By: John Kelley

By: Kathie Zeranski The Arts & Crafts Club has been through a lot of changes with the new Club Rules. Many of the Sub Groups have now formed their own Club. The Arts & Crafts Club no longer has a dues requirement. If you are interested in participating in any of the classes that will be offered through the Club, please contact Kathie Zeranski at ZKathie54@gmail.com and give her your information to be added to the email list. This way you will know about any upcoming activities.

It may be hot outside but it is always “cool” to play a little bridge at the Clubhouse. With 19 bridge opportunities to play each month, the Cresswind Bridge Club always has a seat at the table for you. Check the Bridge Club folder in the clubhouse lobby for contacts and more information.

The Tanglers Group is now meeting every second Tuesday of the month. All are welcome to join in this fun Zentangle inspired form of art. I am hoping to provide a variety of “Make & Take” Classes over the coming months. Look for Updates!

Playscript Readers Club By Marilyn Young The Playscript Reader’s Club is part of the Cresswind family of performing arts. Club members read and share their insights by reviewing a playscript rather than a book. A variety of genres are explored - tragedies, mysteries, comedies, dramas - something for everybody. Playscript decisions are suggested and agreed upon by club members or are made based on an upcoming local presentation of that play, allowing the members to compare the reading vs. the live performance. Meetings are held on the third Tuesday of every other month at 3 pm. The final meetings of 2018 are July 17th in which “Our Town” by Thornton Wilder will be reviewed, followed by a live performance in September. September 18TH and November 20TH wrap up 2018. Feel free to attend anytime to see if this is for you, whether or not you have read the play, or if you would like to be placed on the notification list. For further information see www.cresswindpa/com or contact Marilyn Young at mayoung517@gmail.com.

Whether you plan to invest for yourself or just want to understand your financial paperwork, join us on the 2nd and 4th Mondays of each month at 2 pm in the clubhouse kitchen (no pun intended).
