ortheast Georgia is rich in beauty and area state parks won’t disappoint. “This time of year is a great time to get outside and enjoy wildflowers and greening trees,” said Kim Hatcher, public
affairs coordinator at Georgia State Parks and Historic Sites. “Wildlife is more active because they’re raising their young. Plus, our park rangers start leading many types of programs once the weather becomes nice.” Don Carter State Park, 5000 N. Browning Bridge Road, Gainesville, is Hall County’s first and lone state park. It’s located
Fort Yargo State Park Courtesy Georgia State Parks on the northern end of Lake Lanier and features 4 miles of trails, including paved multiuse trails for walking or biking. “When you get hot and sweaty from hiking and biking you can go jump into Lake Lanier,” Hatcher said. White sand is brought in for the swimming beach, providing a place for children to play and people to lay out on towels, Hatcher said. Cabins are available for camping and reservations for cabins at Don Carter, as well as all state parks can be made up to 13 months in advance. “For holidays and Saturdays in October people really do sometimes make reservations that far in advance,” Hatcher said. “Even if it’s last minute,

the pros from a pro or other skilled wakeboarders and wakesurfers from Singleton Marine Group. While both watersports have similarities, they also are quite different. For wakeboarding, riders are strapped into bindings attached to the board, hold on to a rope and are pulled at speeds up to 20 mph. For wakesurfing, the boat is only going about 10½ mph. The back end of the boat is weighed down with ballast. Since the boat never gets on plane, it throws up a large wave instead of a wake. The rider starts in the water and uses a rope to get up on the board.

After catching the wave, the rider can drop the rope and surf with the wave’s momentum in a never-ending wave. “When they fall they’re only going 10½ mph. It’s like jumping in the pool,” said Vinny Knapp, a professional wakeboarder with Singleton Marine Group, 5529 Lanier Islands Parkway in Buford. He’s seen people as young as 4 or as old as 70 wakesurfing behind a boat. Singleton Marine Group offers wakeboarding and wakesurf lessons. Rates start at $50 for an individual lesson.
Group lessons are also available. Equipment and boats are provided. Riders can bring their own equipment if desired. Knapp said his group has several wakeboarding boats, such as Malibus and Malibu Axis, for lessons. “We have a team of riders who provide all kinds of lessons,” he said. “We do a bunch of different exciting events for the community, too.” Lessons are available for all levels. pro-level students learn the most advanced tricks and work on getting a contest run put together. “We literally cover the entire spectrum,” Knapp said. To register for wakeboarding or wakesurfing lessons, Knapp said a week’s notice is generally necessary. Once school is out for the summer watersports instructors get busier, so make sure to book in advance. For more information or to register, call Knapp at 404-5101077 or follow him on Instagram at Vinnyknapp.
Paddling the lake
When it comes to exploring Lake Lanier at slower speeds, kayaks, canoes and paddle boats are the way to go. The Lanier Canoe and Kayak Club rents stand-up paddle boards, kayaks and canoes at its location at the Lake Lanier Olympic Park, 3105 Clarks Bridge Road in Gainesville. “Paddle sports is for anybody looking for an opportunity to get out and enjoy the outdoors,” said David Haack, paddle sport coordinator and Masters coach at LCKC. “In addition to being a fun, easy and enjoyable, paddling is also a great low-impact workout.” Once a month, the club hosts a moonlight paddle Friday nights nearest the full moon from June through October. The paddle is $20 for non-members and free for LCKC members. An instructor leads all group paddles and rental equipment is provided and available on a first come, first serve basis. All participants must wear a life jacket. Group rentals are also available.

Take a swing at area courses
By Marcus Rodrigue mrodrigue@gainesvilletimes.com
North Georgia residents seeking a golf-themed getaway this summer won’t have to look very far. From the water-lined course at Lanier Islands to the sprawling set of holes on Chateau Elan’s estate to Brasstown Valley’s course among the Blue Ridge Mountains, there’s no shortage of scenic resorts where golfers can do more than just grab a quick 18. 20 Discover North Georgia
A trip to Chateau Elan alone will yield four different courses — three public and one private — stocked with challenges for novices and seasoned golfers alike. “Probably the greatest asset to Chateau Elan is our variety of golf,” said Elizabeth Clarkson, director of golf at Chateau Elan. “We obviously have multiple courses, but they’re very different in design. None of our courses look similar at all.” The Chateau Course is the oldest among those at the Braselton resort, having opened in 1989. But after undergoing renovations that transitioned the bentgrass greens to tifeagle bermuda last summer, it looks like the newest group of 18 holes on the property.
Chateau Elan
“Since it reopened (in September), we’ve heard nothing but great feedback from our customers,” Clarkson said “Now that it has been renovated, it’s something we can be proud of, and our customers are excited to see it.” The par 71 course is open off
the tee, Clarkson said, making it a forgiving one for beginners despite the challenges created by hillier terrain on the back nine. It winds through a low valley and around three lakes, allowing golfers to gaze across multiple holes at a time. Resort-goers can expect just

the opposite on the Woodlands Course. Lined with trees and marked by elevation changes, it presents little to no preview of the next hole. Clarkson said golfers often describe this par 72 course as the most challenging one at Chateau Elan, and its narrowness can be intimidating for those struggling off the tee. Yet for all its rigors, the Woodlands Course features a stretch with no residences and abounds with wildlife such as deer, wild turkey and other birds. “You kind of forget about the hustle and bustle around you,” Clarkson said. Hotel guests may also have the opportunity to play the members-only Legends Course if it has available openings. Though located on Chateau Elan’s property, the private club is managed by a different company. From 1994-1998, the Legends Course hosted the Sarazen World Open Championship, a PGA Tour event that drew some of the best professional golfers in the world. Vacationing golfers looking to test their short game can also try the Executive Par 3 Course, which features nine holes all situated behind the hotel. It’s the only one of Chateau Elan’s courses

without cart paths. The resort, which Clarkson said hosts more than 100 tournaments a year, also offers three free public practice greens as well as a public driving range. Golfers will have unlimited access to the latter as part of Chateau Elan’s nightly Villas Golf Packages. On Sundays-Thursdays, a two-bedroom villa is $525 plus tax per night for two golfers, while the price climbs to $625 plus tax per night for a three-bedroom villa. The rates for two- and three-bedroom villas are $645 and $745 (plus tax), respectively, on Fridays and Saturdays. Visitors can add another person to their room for an additional $60 plus tax per night. A maximum of four people can stay in a two-bedroom villa, and no more than six can occupy a threebedroom villa. Chateau Elan also offers night golfing, singlenight deals and a his and her getaway. Similar golf packages can be found at Brasstown Valley in Young Harris, which boats a Scottish links-style, par 72 course. Visitors can play it as much as they want with the Unlimited Weekday Golf Package that starts at $269. The resort’s most popular offer is Brasstown’s Premier Golf Package (starting at $372). It includes two rounds of golf per night of stay, breakfast for two and a $75 dinner credit that excludes tax, gratuity and alcohol. Bunkers on sprawling hills adorned by bentgrass greens populate the 13-acre course, and water features are present on 10 holes. Lanier Islands, meanwhile, gives golfers the opportunity to be surrounded by water as they play. The Legacy on Lanier Golf Course in Buford spans the islands of Lake Lanier for 18 holes, 11 of which are on the water. Patrons of the resort will also have access to the practice bunker, putting green and chipping green, while rental clubs are available for $65 per 18 holes. The Island Golf Getaway is a year-round package with prices that vary by season but always includes two rounds of golf and two breakfast buffets each day. For those who can’t get enough of the course, extra rounds are available at a resort discount. Complimentary food and beverages are served in the clubhouse throughout the day.

Visit the Bridal Veil Falls waterfall, a natural rock slide and the only place swimming is allowed within the gorge. It’s a tough hike and requires a free permit from the park’s ranger office. For animals' safety, pets are not allowed on the gorge floor. Leashed pets are welcome on rim trails. Raven Cliff Falls Trail, Helen Hike the 5-mile Raven Cliff Trail through the Chattahoochee National Forest to one of Georgia’s most unique waterfalls. The trail follows a winding trout stream through hardwood forest. The falls cascade 40 feet down through a towering cliff, offering magnificent views. The trail is dog-friendly and rated as moderate. Yonah Mountain Trail, Cleveland Yonah Mountain lies at the foothills of Georgia’s southern Appalachian Mountains, with a rolling landscape below between Cleveland and Helen. The mountain’s asymmetrical shape and rock outcrops near the top makes it popular with hikers and climbers. The 4.4-mile trail covers the boulder and wildflower-filled lower elevations of this popular mountain before cresting at the summit for incredible views. This trail is rated more difficult and is pet-friendly. Hike Inn Trail, Dawsonville Located in Amicalola State Park, the trail is 10 miles with an elevation of 800 feet. It is considered moderate, but at the foot of the Chattahoochee 26 Discover North Georgia
National Forest, the hike is well worth it. Hike to the top of Springer Mountain and stay at the Hike Inn for the night or just stop in for a snack and a quick rest before heading down. At the bottom is Amicalola Falls, the tallest in Georgia. Peak leaf season makes this trail especially busy and advance reservations for overnight guests are highly recommended. Unicoi State Park , Helen The trails at Unicoi State Park are wonderful to hike year-round. Flowers and tree blooms in the spring and summer give shade and fragrance while the autumn explodes in an array of reds, yellows, and oranges as leaves begin to change. And the winter months allow hikers to enjoy scenic views of the area not available any other time of the year. All trailheads, except the Unicoi Mountain Bike Trail, are located at the far end of the level 3 lodge parking area. Trail maps are available at the front desk of the lodge. There are several trails to choose from including Frog Pond Nature trail, Bottoms Loop Trail, Unicoi Helen Trail, Smith Creek Trail and the Lake Trail. Most are easy to moderate except the Unicoi/ Helen and Smith Creek trails which can be strenuous. Smith Creek Trail ends at the Anna Ruby Falls recreation area. The lodge at Unicoi offers resting space and is pet friendly. Smithgall Woods, Helen Twenty eight miles of trails in lush woods along Duke’s Creek makes this trek a true retreat from the world. The trails include the visitor center loop, Laurel Ridge Trail, Ash Creek Trail, Cathy Ellis Trail, Martin’s Mine Trail and the Wetland Loop Trail. The trails range in ease from strenuous to very easy. All offer picturesque views and educational opportunities. Ash Creek Trail requires fording of Duke’s Creek and Cathy Ellis Trail leads to a serene waterfall. You’ll be sure to see lots of rhododendron and mountain laurel along most of the trails. very region has its quirky, unique sights, the kind of places once featured on cheesy old postcards and tourism brochures stuffed into slots at roadside motels. Northeast Georgia is no different, with plenty of locales you won’t find anywhere else. Well beyond the “world’s largest pile of mud” that Clark Griswold might be drawn to, each has a special allure and a story behind the story. And some you may see featured in an upcoming Hollywood film or TV show as the film industry digs deeper roots into Georgia.
Babyland General Babyland General, also known colloquially as the Cabbage Patch Kids hospital, sits on 650 acres in Cleveland at the new location which opened in 2008. FALL Autumn is one of the busiest time for visitors in North Georgia, the color of the leaves and the lure of cooler weather drawing many out of their suburban lairs to visit our communities. Each town offers its own special event based on its unique history, whether it’s moonshine in Dawsonville, gold in Dahlonega or sorghum in Blairsville. One that appeals to many and draws thousands is Oktoberfest in the Bavarian village of Helen in White County. This year’s festival runs Sept. 7 to Oct 26, weekends only in September and every day after Sept. 28. The main performances are in the Helen Festhalle, 1074 Edelweiss St., including waltzes, polka bands, German food and drinks and dancing. Admission is $8 per person Monday-Friday, $10 Saturday, free on Sundays; food and drink are extra. Other areas throughout the town offer music, food and beer for every taste, all offering a taste of Bavarian delights surrounded by fall colors.

WINTER Nearly every North Georgia town lights up for the Christmas holidays with displays of lights, greenery and special events to welcome Santa Claus and the season. The most unique is the annual Nights of Lights at Lanier Islands. Opening in late November and running through the end of December, the festival welcomes visitors to 7 miles of twinkling holiday light displays ending at Santa’s Village. It includes LanierWorld Winter Adventure, featuring snow play zones, speed slides, bubble skating and carnival rides, plus holiday films shown on a five-story screen. For more information on this year’s festival, visit www.lanierislands.com.
