Sugartopia Bakery opened its second location in Oakwood. Even though a grand opening, which will include a ribboncutting, is planned for Thursday, Feb. 1, co-owners Jamie Keller and Kelly O’Mary wanted to get the doors open as soon as they were done with successfully passing kitchen inspections.
“We just wanted everybody to experience the greatness that is Sugartopia,” Keller joked.
The bakery’s original location has been on Main Street in downtown Cornelia for the past 9 years, and Keller and O’Mary decided Cornelia residents shouldn’t be the only customers they served in-person. Opening a second location was the next step, and Hall County was the only answer for the question of where to next?, Keller explained.
“We decided we cannot keep this just in our town,” said Keller, a native of Oakwood, who lived there for the first 16 years of her life before moving to Habersham County.
“We finally realized that we can take our dreams and make them a reality,” said O’Mary, who said making a career out of their baking skills was, “unlocking a superpower within ourselves.”
The menu at Sugartopia Bakery includes cakes, pies, cupcakes and ready-to-bake items for dinner. There are vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, key lime and red velvet cakes for sale. The pie menu is equally as varied, with chocolate cream, coconut cream, key lime, pecan and pumpkin, one of the seasonal FLAVORS Spring 2024 offered to customers.
The ready-to-bake items include lasagne made with ground beef, Italian sausage and ricotta cheese, chicken pot pie, beef stroganoff, and poppy seed chicken casserole. The casserole is topped with buttery cracker crumble and is served with rice. This dish serves three to four people, according to Keller and O’Mary.
The cinnamon rolls are sold in a six-count, and the cheesecakes can be purchased in full servings, minis and by the slice. The cheesecake FLAVORS Spring 2024 run the gamut from classic New York style, blueberry, cherry, strawberry, cookies and cream, and caramel apple.
The bakery’s signature red velvet cupcakes and vanilla cupcakes, for example, are items that will make their way to the Oakwood location, says Keller. “You’re going to find them in the bakery all the time,” she said.
The bakery does not offer catering services, but does deliver wedding cakes and custom-made cakes around North Georgia. The wedding cakes are offered in designs such as rosettes, smooth texture, and birch tree.
O’Mary and Keller are looking forward to bringing their chocolate covered strawberries to Oakwood for the first time. The dessert is one of the most popular on the menu, according to Keller.
The new version of the Sugartop Bakery website will debut next month and will make online and custom orders easier, according to the bakery’s owners.

Waffles are a diverse breakfast food. Waffles are tasty as a standalone, but they can be made even more delicious with some toppings or sides.
No matter the meal, having a versatile waffle recipe base can be the springboard to delicious dishes.
INGREDIENTS
t 2 1/4 cups all-purpose floor
t 1/2 cup cugar
t 1 tablespoon baking power
t 3/4 teaspoons salt
t 1 1/2 cup milk
t 1 cup of butter, melted
t 3 large eggs, slightly beaten
t 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
t Combine flour, sugar baking powder and salt in bowl; mix well.
t Combine milk, melted butter, eggs and vanilla in another bowl; mix well. Stir wet ingredients into dry ingredients.
t Cook batter in Belgian waffle maker according to manufacturer’s directions. Serve warm with butter and maple syrup, or desired toppings.
Note: Belgian waffles can be made savory by serving with fried chicken and a spicy jam. Makes 8 waffles
