BREAKFAST WITH SANTA Breakfast with Santa was on Saturday, Dec 2 from 9-12 at the Lakeview Clubhouse. Over 100 families came out and ate from a yummy breakfast buffet (the biscuit bar was a hit with lots of toppings and even sausage gravy!), listened to Christmas music, made their lists for Santa and then visited with Mr. and Mrs. Claus! Mr. and Mrs. Carr and Boy Scout Troop 1597 came out to be Santa’s little helpers, sell luminaries, and to help with the food donation drop offs. Hamilton Mill families collected three HUGE bins of food and canned goods for the Hamilton Mill United Methodist Food Pantry. A huge shout out to Kite & Sky Photography for taking all of the pictures with Santa for Hamilton Mill families and friends. Pictures with Santa are such precious memories‌ thank you for capturing them! We hope everyone had a great time visiting with each other, had many photo ops, and most of all a very happy holiday!

Faith is Our

Cornerstone On a spring day in April, 1985, Eagle Ranch welcomed its first child. The shy teen boy walked through the doors of the Faith Home, unsure of what the future held. He was soon joined by six more boys, who discovered that Faith was more than the name of their new home, but the very thing that would spark hope for a better life. Faith remains the cornerstone of the Eagle Ranch community, which today helps make life better for nearly 70 boys and girls, providing support their families as they work toward reunification.

HAMILTON MILL ANGEL TREE For the past several years we have helped the Gwinnett Department of Family and Children Services with holiday gifts, and this year we had 15 foster children who counted on us to make their Christmas dreams come true‌ and Hamilton Mill, you sure did! We kicked off the Angel Tree season Friday, November 17 with a Masterpiece Mixers Paint Nite, where several Hamilton Mill residents came out and painted a wooden door hanger for the holidays, picked Angels from the tree, and had a great time hanging out with neighbors and friends. Thank you to Masterpiece Mixers for being a sponsor for our Angel Tree! For two weeks after the kick-off, so many of you came out and poured your generosity into this year’s Angel Tree. Hamilton Mill always goes above and beyond with buying gifts for these kids, and these foster parents surely do appreciate you and your support. Thank you to all the sweet families that went shopping for gifts, volunteered to wrap presents, donated wrapping supplies, and for the neighbors that pulled together and took care of the last tags on the tree. This is truly what this season is all about and we thank you!

SWIM TEAM NEWS

HAMMMERHEAD NEWS Even though it’s only January, we’re already hard at work getting ready for the 2018 Hammerheads Swim season! We had an AMAZING time in 2017, with fun, friends, and a lot of fast swimming! The Hammerheads placed 9th at the GCSL (Gwinnett County Swim League) Championships at Georgia Tech in July. We’re ready to build on that for 2018 and have even more fun! Registration for all retiring swimmers will be available through SwimTopia in late January, with new family orientation and registration early in February. We will also have suit fitting and team apparel available at that time. As we have done in past seasons, we will have a “Back to the Pool” Party at Bogan Park in late March, and practices will begin the second week in May. Watch for emails from the team, and more information in the weekly communications. We are so excited to get back to the pool this summer and welcome all new and returning swimmers to join us!

For any questions, please email us at HMSTHammerheads@gmail.com and we will get back to you as soon as we can! There is also information about the team on SwimTopia here: https:// hamiltonmill.swimtopia.com

Looking forward to a great 2018! Hamilton Mill Hammerheads 22 | HOMETOWN HERALD | January 2018

TENNIS NEWS

TENNIS NEWS

from Jeff Dudacek, Director of Tennis Yes, it is 2018. You might have had some challenges in 2017 but there were plenty of good things that happened. I relate the year to a big tennis match that lasted 12 months. Take your challenges and learn from them and bring the good things to your next match, which starts in 2018. Not too long ago you either play on Thursday, Saturday or Sunday for league tennis. Now you can play on multiple teams on different days throughout the week. Some players play on 4 different teams and could play 4 matches a week. This is not including flex league matches. Hamilton Mill is a very active tennis community. Since the change, the play on courts has become busier. The staff and I are looking forward to 2018 and being part of Hamilton Mill Tennis. SPRING ALTA DEADLINE If you want to play Spring Alta that starts in mid-March. The Alta registration starts January 1 ends January 22nd. Those are league dates but if want to change teams you must sign the online book. WINTER LEAGUE PLAY The winter USTA season will continue to the middle of January. The Alta mix-doubles season will play on Sunday starting January 6 at 1:00. Even though it is winter, courts will be extremely busy. The courts are extremely busy during mix season. Plan your flex league matches accordingly. PRIVATE LESSON MONTH January is private lesson month. That is the fastest way to improve your game. January is the best time to develop a new stroke or just fix the nagging serve. You want to be ready for the spring and summer play. There is 3 parts to tennis; fixing, drilling and match play. It is time to fix. There is a reason why the best players in the world have coaches.

T

MIX-DOUBLES SEMI-PRIVATE LESSONS Does your partner hog the court? Are they telling you,” just return the serve”? Do you hear a lot of “mine”? Is the couch your bed during mix season? It might not because you are playing bad doubles but maybe you are playing men’s or ladies doubles, not mix-doubles. There several different strategies used in the mix but not in normal doubles. It might be good for your team or marriage to take a semi-private with a pro and solve your questions. If not we always have drills on Monday nights. Let’s not turn mix-doubles into mix-troubles. WINTER DRILLS We have many activities planned for the winter. We ask that you reserve a spot in any activity you wish to participate in ahead of time. You can contact the shop at (770) 945-6452 or milltennis@bellsouth.netor reserve your spot from the HM Events Calendar. DRILLS Men’s Night on Thursday evenings at 7:30-8:30. Cost is 10.00 per person. Women’s TGIF Friday mornings at 10:30-11:30. Cost is 10.00 per person. Get ready for an hour of high energy drills designed to improve your game and prepare you for your next match! You must reserve a spot to attend, by noon on Thursday for Men’s Drills and 5 pm Thursday for TGIF Friday Drills, no walk-ins, please. Recruit your teammates! We must have 5 players for each session. Mixed Doubles Drills: Monday 7:30-8: 30 pm Cost is $10 per person Work out the mix-double flaws by coming out for Mixed Doubles Drills. Please reserve your spot by Mondays at noon.

WINTER COURT UPDATE The courts and roll dries do not get the use like they do in the summer but the winter weather can be just as bad. All roll dries need to be hung up on the fence after use or they will develop a flat side. Again rollers are to be used for rolling off the top layer of water not to dry the court. Do not press hard on the roller. Removing ice and snow on the courts with shovels and heater will damage the courts. If your courts are not playable do not move courts unless the shop is contacted. Snow or iced courts are treated like rain during league play.

TENNIS TIPS

TENNIS TIPS P laying Mix-Doubles MIXED DOUBLES STRATEGY Just as singles is a different game than doubles, mixed doubles is yet again a very different game than regular doubles. The normal doubles shot might not work in mix doubles. All basic fundamental mix strategy starts with, ‘who is the weaker player on the court’. This will open up other weaknesses with your opponents. Play the weaker player There is a weaker player on a mixed doubles team, and thus like I said,” it should be the starting point to the strategy”. Weaker players do not like topspin, pace or even running. They want their partner to take control of all those shots. Evaluate What’s Working Given the above, you ideally want to direct all balls to the weaker player. But guess what? Some weaker players have a tremendous ability to block back the power shots. They might not have the ability but they have the strategy. They might be very aggressive at net or have a strong baseline game. Maybe the better player hits the ball hard but can’t put two shots together, so who is weaker? Don’t always assume you’ll win if you play to the weaker player. Remember that this is a starting point evaluate both of your opponents and adjust your game to exploit their weaknesses. Don’t Lob the Guy If you’re going to lob, lob over the women. In fact, it might be the man who covers those lobs, so hit it over her and make the team move. Especially on the deuce side, the man will have to run for a backhand lob, assuming they are right-handed, and that might not be there best shot. Guess who will run out of gas in the third set? If you are determined to lob over the guy, go ahead and try it once, but guess where they are going to slam the ball. It will not be you. Hope your couch is comfy?

Keep the Man off the Net Keeping the man off the net opens up many strategies. Like the last tip, lob can be used. Your shot needs to be deep not just the man’s side but the ladies side also. When you keep mix teams, especially the man, separated you will limit what they can do against your team. Hit Down the Middle The down the middle shot is the start of the avalanche with the other team. First, the confusion of who takes the ball. Second, players start to overtake too much court. You know the term ‘ball hogging’. Third, the looks that your opponent’s give each other. Fourth, the disagreement starts. Well, you know what happens next. Be a Great Partner Especially since playing abilities can vary so much between men and women at the same level, one of the biggest tips for mixed doubles success is to be a supportive partner. That means you encourage your partner to keep going for their shots even if they miss, and you acknowledge a great shot as such. Keep up the positive energy between points. Continue talking about strategy between games and adjust as needed. Have Fun! The whole point of mixed doubles is to have fun, so make sure above all else that you come off the court with a smile. Well, you don’t have to smile but at least come off together. You went on together…

See ya on the courts!
