TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSE 2017

WHERE WERE YOU DURING THE BIG ECLIPSE? The solar eclipse of August 21, 2017 was a total eclipse visible within a band across the entire contiguous United States, passing from the Pacific to the Atlantic coasts. Prior to this event, no solar eclipse had been visible across the entire contiguous United States since June 8, 1918; not since the February 1979 eclipse had a total eclipse been visible from anywhere in the mainland United States. SO THIS WAS A BIG DEAL! Where were you for the big day? Several of you ventured off to the mountains for the totality view, as others stayed back in the neighborhood sharing glasses with friends and neighbors. The view from the Hamilton Mill Golf Club was gorgeous, even as it darkened and looked a little spooky outside. I had a great time making an Eclipse play list and watching it with my husband, kids and best friends. I loved the way the shadows looked.

Thank you to everyone that sent in their pictures and stories to share. - April Williams “My husband Chris and I drove up Saturday and stayed at an original family owned B&B in Bryson City, NC that just re-opened after many years and we were their first guests to make a reservation. Such a sweet town with great shopping, good restaurants and breweries, and of course the Great Smokey Mountain Railway! As we were in the shadow, it was so awesome to take the glasses off and be part of the totality of the eclipse for just the two short minutes! Our B&B sat up on a hill above the town and it was so funny when the actual eclipse occurred. Everyone in the town started to howl at the moon! The birds stopped singing and the crickets got quite noisy as it got dark. The temperature dropped probably 10 degrees. What an awesome experience!”

DUELING PIANOS The famous Andrew Brothers were back for Dueling Pianos at the Lakeview Clubhouse on Saturday night, August 19. Tickets went on sale on July 17 and sold out in 30 hours! Groups of friends shared tables, food, and drinks as they listened to 3 solid hours of comedians Damian and Mark go back and forth with requests from our very own! They played everything from Elton John to Neil Diamond to special “Happy Birthday” songs for a few people in the crowd celebrating! The better the tips, the more likely your song got played. Only two songs were stopped… “Kiss” by Prince (as if!) and “Sweet Home Alabama” to be completely interrupted by “Rocky Top”! People danced and sang along, and had a great time interacting with the Andrew Brothers. If you missed out, we will be doing this again! A special thanks to Culver’s owners Nancy and Todd Rodee for sponsoring this event and bringing great deals for our attendees on their awesome custard. Culver’s is located near the Mall of Georgia… check out the coupons on page 15 and go by and say hi!

HAMILTON MILL POOL SEASON CLOSING FLICK ‘N FLOAT I know we say this every year, but BOY did summer fly by! I think we are all ready for cooler weather and all the fun things the fall season brings. Well, we must have wished on a star a little too soon, because the pool closing weekend was unseasonably cold! Saturday, September 9th had a high of 78 and a low of 67–and with Hurricane Irma winds already blowing through, we had to move the movie screen to the grass so it could be anchored. The pool party turned into a field party while people danced and laid out blankets for the movie. Starting at 6:30pm, DJ Tony played some music while North Georgia Pediatric Dentistry provided popsicles and DePalma’s served up pizza slices and drinks. At dark, we watched “Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul” on a GIANT inflatable screen on the lawn. We served FREE popcorn during the movie as people snuggled up as the weather cooled down. It was a great night and a great end to the 2017 pool season.

A special shout out to DePalma’s Italian Café for sponsoring our event and providing a yummy dinner!

TENNIS NEWS

from Jeff Dudacek, Director of Tennis October is here and we are in full swing with the Alta fall league. Every season it is amazing to watch the ladies league on Thursdays and Sundays, the men and juniors on Saturdays, and all of the talent Hamilton Mill brings to the matches. Of course, that is not including all the senior teams, social play and flex matches going on the same time. We still have about 600 players a week using the courts but the league seasons has changed from matches on specific days to matches all week. Do you receive the weekly tennis newsletter? That is the best way to the up to date tennis information, court usage, team courts and events. It has been coming out on Mondays since January. As always you can reach me at Jeff.milltennis@gmail.com or the shop at milltennis@bellsouth.net for information on any tennis information. WINTER ADULT LEAGUE DEADLINE These are league deadlines to submit a team for the season, not Hamilton Mill deadlines. I you want to move teams or find a team. Remember to sign the online book well before the league deadline, so you have a chance to pick up by a team. USTA League starts the second week of November for all leagues October 12 weekday women October 15 Sunday business women and men October 18 40 and over women Alta Mix-Doubles starting in January 2018 is 5 lines of mix-doubles. October 20th deadline for the mix teams. HAMILTON MILL SINGLES LEAGUE Congratulations!!! Tony Underwood is the winner of the Summer Hamilton Mill men’s singles league. TEAM NEWS Are you not sure about what team to play with? Are you transferring to another team but not sure if you should do it? We are here to help. We know all the teams and can help you with an on court evaluation. For example, if you transfer to a higher team and receive the higher rating it might not be easy to move back down if you think it is too high of play. Contact us–we want you to make a good move. It is a great neighborhood to play tennis and we want to keep you playing.

PRO SHOP NEWS The new Wilson Ultras have arrived and ready for you to demo. Along with Babolat, the Hamilton Mill pro shop is now carrying Head rackets. I looked over several brands that would best the fit the Hamilton Mill tennis players. The Head technology gives you another feel for the tennis ball. Fall is another good time to buy a racket. Our pros fit the racket that you need for your game. We know your game. We watch you playing on the courts. Rackets need to be fitted to the player’s game–not what is on sale. If not, it could lead to injury. Our racket pricing is the same and sometimes lower than everyone else (that includes online). Hamilton Mill residents get 3 days free to demo a racket. Remember 100% of proceeds from the pro shop are returned back to the neighborhood. Buying from the pro shop only helps the tennis at Hamilton Mill. FALL BEGINNER 101/102 Calling all adult beginner players/rusty players! Have you never played? We will be holding our last 101/102 for the year. The class will starts in the middle of October. This is the best way to get involved on a team or even start one yourself at Hamilton Mill. Beginner 101/102 is for you. Tennis 101 is new players, and 102 is players who have some experience playing. It is $65.00 for 5 one-hour group lessons. When you get done with this class, tennis will no longer be a stranger to you. If you do not have a racket or it is over 5 years old, we will let you use a demo with the new technology until you are ready for a racket. Send an email to the tennis shop milltennis@bellsouth.net for class times and dates.

TENNIS TIPS

TENNIS TIPS 8 Tips to a Better Tennis Game I have been directing and teaching tennis in Gwinnett County for many league seasons. I have seen plenty of good and bad tennis matches. The following are a few simple tips that can truly help any level of play. My tips are simple and can be applied with a little practice. The success I have had is a direct result of seeing and then saying a few simple words that make sense. Tip 1: Early Preparation You cannot prepare soon enough- turn your hips and shoulders before the oncoming ball bounces on your side. GET THAT RACKET BACK! Tip 2: Exaggerate Your Follow Through The majority of all people, no matter what sport they play, can improve by following through when you get a little nervous or your opponent is in control of play and moving you around. Exaggerate your follow through; do not think, just hit the ball. MOVE YOUR FEET! Tip 3: Two Bounces and You’re Out Whenever you rally, wherever you play, make up your mind that you will never let the ball bounce twice. Always run for the ball even if you think you have no chance to reach it.

Tip 6: Playing safe? Playing safe is not always the answer. Going for the shot–defying the odds–makes you win the matches. Watch the pros go for it during the match. I still like the saying, ‘Go down fighting.’ Tip 7: Serve (rituals) When you serve you should have the same rituals that you do at the beginning of the match and when the match gets close in score. Bounce the ball the same number before you start the motion. After you bounce spy the target you are serving too. Deep breaths. Toss the ball above your head in front of you. Hit the serve you planned, 1st serve, spin, 2nd serve and flat serve. Tip 8: When Do You Communicate? There are so many opinions on when you talk, how you talk, and what you say to your player after a practice session or a match. There are no two people alike, you have to adjust your method to fit the student’s personality. See ya on the courts!

Tip 4: Hit-Recover So many players will hit a ball–and watch the ball–and compliment themselves on the shot. From now on you must hit and recover. I don’t suggest going too extreme. Just hit, finish and get back to position. Tip 5: Balance Foundation Along with recovery, get yourself recovered to a balance position with your racket in front of you. Before you can move forwards and backwards you have to have a balanced foundation. It will make your speed to the shot much faster.
